The moult-staging technique was used to determine the main moult stages (MS) and their duration in laboratory-reared juveniles and subadults of Mysis mixta and Neomysis integer. The relative duration of each stage was similar for both species with premoult occupying the major part of the moult cycle (51% and 44% for M. mixta and N. integer, respectively), followed by postmoult (26% and 34%) and intermoult (23% and 22%). Effects of temperature and feeding regimes on the chronology of the moult cycle were investigated. When the duration of the moult cycle (MCD) was extended by manipulating the feeding regime, animals prolonged their late postmoult and early premoult stages. At 12 and 5 °C, no specific moult stage varied in relative duration as long as food supply was high. Field application of moult staging for growth assessment was tested using wild-caught M. mixta. The MCD estimated via moulting experiments was compared to that obtained by analyzing moult stage distribution combined with the experimentally obtained data on stage duration. Close correspondence between two methods of MCD assessment was observed with moult-staging technique being particularly useful in situations when conducting of experiments immediately after collection is not feasible.  相似文献

To understand the physiological and ecological responses of marine fishes to the change of water temperature, newly-hatched larvae of Yellowtail clownfish Amphiprion clarkii were reared in captivity at water temperatures of 23, 26 and 29 °C till they completed the metamorphosis to juvenile phase, and larval survival, development, growth and feeding were evaluated during the experimental period. The results showed that water temperature influenced the physiological performance of larvae of A. clarkii significantly. The survival and growth rates of larvae of A. clarkii increased significantly with the increase of water temperature from 23 to 29 °C (P < 0.05). Water temperature also influenced larval development of A. clarkii significantly and larvae reared at 23 °C took longer time for post-larval development and metamorphosis compared to 26 and 29 °C (P < 0.05). Total length and body weight for post-larval development and metamorphosis decreased with the increase of water temperature from 23 to 29 °C (P < 0.05). Q10 in developmental rate was higher than in daily growth rate at the same rearing temperature, indicating that at water temperature had greater influence on larval development than on growth. Water temperature also influenced larval feeding of A. clarkii significantly with feed ration (FR) and feed conversion efficiency (FCE) increased with the increase of water temperature from 23 to 29 °C (P < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between FR and specific growth rate (SGR) (P < 0.05) but not between FCE and SGR (P > 0.05), indicating that FR influenced growth rate significantly in larvae of A. clarkii. This study demonstrated that the physiological responses of larvae of A. clarkii to the change of water temperature and confirmed that water temperature influenced larval survival, development, growth and feeding significantly. This study suggests that the decline of larval survival and growth rates, extension of pelagic larval duration and reduction of larval feeding at lower temperature have ecological impacts on larval dispersal and metamorphosis, juvenile settlement and population replenishment in A. clarkii in the wild.  相似文献

We exposed seedlings of Cotinus coggygria var. cinerea to drought and exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) under two different light conditions. Two watering regimes (well-watered and drought), two exogenous ABA applications (no ABA and with ABA) and two light regimes (full sunlight and shade) were employed. Compared with well-watered treatment, drought treatment significantly reduced the relative growth rate, relative water content (RWC), net photosynthesis rate (A) and transpiration (E), but increased chlorophyll a (chla), carbon isotope (δ13C), endogenous ABA, malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) contents, and guaiacol peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activities. There was an apparent alleviation of drought effects by shade, as indicated by the lower relative growth rate, and chlorophyll, MDA and H2O2 contents, and increases in indoleacetic acid (IAA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) contents. On the other hand, the exogenous ABA application under shade induced protective effects on drought-stressed seedlings, as visible in RWC, MDA, A, stomatal conductance (gs), E, δ13C, ABA and IAA values. In all, our results suggest that seedlings of C. coggygria are more sensitive to drought under full-light than under shade.  相似文献

Populations of a rheophilic cyprinid Barbus barbus have declined in last decades, which created a need of conservation aquaculture. Production of stocking material in controlled conditions calls for optimization of the two major factors, temperature and diet. Condition, growth and food conversion ratio in fish fed a formulated diet Aller Futura were compared with those on natural food—frozen Chironomidae larvae at 17, 21 and 25 °C. Groups of 60 early juveniles (0.6–3.7 g) were reared in each of 18 aquaria in which six experimental groups were run in triplicate. Daily food ratios were adjusted according to fish biomass, differences in hydration between the two diets and rearing temperature. No mortality occurred during the experiment. Condition coefficient K was significantly higher in fish fed Aller Futura compared to those fed Chironomidae irrespective of temperature tested; body deformities were not recorded. Relative growth rate at the same temperature was always higher in fish on the formulated diet than in those fed Chironomidae, and food conversion ratio was always suppressed, both suggesting an efficient utilization of Aller Futura for growth in B. barbus early juveniles. On both diets the coefficient K was depressed at 21 °C. Relative growth rate (RGR) was accelerated with temperature according the Krogh’s “normal curve” within the range 21–25 °C, while at lower temperatures (17–21 °C) the observed values of temperature coefficient Q10 were much higher than the theoretical Q10 values based on Krogh’s “normal curve”. Food conversion ratios (FCR) were reduced on both diets at 21 and 25 °C. Theoretical optimum temperatures for food conversion were 22.0 and 23.6 °C. Summing up, responses of three independent indices: condition, growth and food utilization locate the optimum temperature for B. barbus between 21 and 25 °C. No evidence was found that the effect of temperature on these indices was substantially modified by the diet.  相似文献

In this study, we apply Fry's classification of environmental factors to demonstrate the limiting effects of oxygen and its interaction with temperature on the growth of juvenile P. lethostigma. We also evaluated the properties of two metabolic indices, marginal metabolic scope (MMS) and limiting oxygen concentration (LOC), as indicators of metabolic scope. We found that oxygen limitation has its greatest impact near the optimum temperature for growth of the species. At 29 °C a reduction from 6.00 mg/L to 4.00 mg/L caused a 50% reduction in growth rate while at 27 °C the reduction had no significant effect on growth rate. The results are particularly relevant because these temperatures and oxygen concentrations are commonly observed in nursery areas during summer months. At all temperatures fish from the lowest oxygen treatment (1.75 mg/L) had negative growth rates. Comparisons between daily oscillating oxygen treatments and constant treatments failed to demonstrate significant effects. At temperatures past the optimum, growth rates between the 6.00 mg/L and 4.00 mg/L treatments were not statistically different. LOC was significantly affected by temperature, oxygen, and their interaction. Estimates were positively correlated with oxygen treatment (R2 > 0.71) and negatively correlated with temperature at moderate and low oxygen concentrations (R2 > − 0.84). MMS was significantly affected by temperature and oxygen and was significantly correlated with oxygen treatment (R2 > − 0.91), but correlations with temperature were not as clear. In conclusion, oxygen and temperature interactions have significant effects on metabolic scope and growth rates of fish, well above the accepted hypoxia threshold of 2.00 mg/L and MMS has proved a useful estimator of the metabolic scope of the organism within an environment.  相似文献

Ecdysteroids are steroid hormones that play an important role in development, growth, molting of larva, and reproduction in the Arthropoda. The effect of ecdysteroids is mediated by its binding to ecdysteroid receptor (EcR). To investigate the role of EcR during development and the effect to environmental stressors on EcR expression in a copepod, we isolated and characterized cDNA and 5′-promoter region of the Tigriopus japonicus EcR (TJ-EcR), and studied mRNA expression pattern. The full-length TJ-EcR cDNA sequence was 1962 bp in length and the open reading frame encoded 546 amino acids. The deduced TJ-EcR protein contained well-conserved DNA-binding domain and ligand-binding domain. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that TJ-EcR was clustered with the EcR of other crustaceans. TJ-EcR mRNA was expressed in a developmental stage-specific manner: high in early developmental stages and low in the adult stage. Significantly elevated expression of the TJ-EcR gene in adults was detected at hypersalinity (42 ppt) and high temperature (35 °C) condition. The 5′-flanking region of TJ-EcR gene contains heat shock protein 70 response elements, implying that the environmental stressors may affect its expression via the stress-sensor. In addition, bisphenol A (100 µg/L) repressed TJ-EcR expression. Our results suggest that TJ-EcR could be a biomarker for the monitoring of the impact of environmental stressors in copepods.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the impact of crowding (stocking density) on food consumption and growth of juvenile Sepia officinalis reared at 17 and 25 °C. Two groups of 75 cuttlefish each were reared in closed seawater systems with water temperatures of 17 and 25 °C. Each group was subdivided into two treatments (three replicates per treatment): low-density (equivalent to 100 Sepia m−2) and high-density (equivalent to 400 Sepia m−2). Food consumption was measured daily and live wet body weight (g) was measured weekly over a 5-week study. The 25 °C treatment resulted in significantly higher growth rates and food consumption compared to the 17 °C treatment. Stocking density had no statistically significant effect on food consumption, gross growth efficiency (GGE), or weight at either temperature. However, the high-density treatments had slightly lower GGE values overall and growth in weight at 25 °C was slightly but consistently lower in the high-density treatment suggesting that stocking densities of 400 Sepia m−2 may be approaching levels that impact feeding and growth.  相似文献

Selected interactions between the encrusting sponge Halichondria panicea and its primary predator, the dorid nudibranch Archidoris montereyensis, were investigated in a high-latitude rocky intertidal community spatially dominated by H. panicea. Feeding experiments were conducted in which A. montereyensis pairs were provided with sponge containing symbiotic zoochlorellae or sponge in which the zoochlorellae population had been reduced or removed by shading. Nudibranchs consuming H. panicea with symbiotic zoochlorellae had higher feeding, growth, and egg production rates than individuals eating aposymbiotic sponge. We simulated A. montereyensis predation on H. panicea by creating typically sized feeding grooves in the sponge. H. panicea's response was high linear growth rates into the experimental feeding grooves, generally recovering most of the groove area within 4 weeks. Overall, the sponge's rapid response to tissue damage minimizes grazing impacts and substrate loss and reduces susceptibility to wave removal.  相似文献

Gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) encounter a wide range of temperatures and salinities in nearshore and estuarine juvenile habitats. The energetic response of juvenile gray snapper to temperature and salinity was measured in laboratory experiments to determine the influence of these physicochemical factors on the potential value of different juvenile nurseries. Maximum consumption and growth rates of juvenile (25-50 mm SL) gray snapper were determined in 12-day trials at 20 temperature/salinity combinations representing conditions in juvenile habitats. Ad libitum feeding level of individual fish was measured daily. Maximum weight specific feeding rate increased significantly with temperature and salinity; however, the effect of salinity was much less than that of temperature. Linear growth rate and specific growth rate both increased with temperature, and salinity did not have a significant effect on either. Gross growth efficiency (K1, growth×consumption−1*100) increased with temperature and was significantly lower at high salinities, indicating increased energetic costs. The higher K1 at lower salinities has several implications for juvenile gray snapper in low salinity habitats: (1) they would need less food to achieve the same somatic growth as juveniles in high salinity habitats; (2) they would have higher growth at limited ration levels as compared to high salinity habitats; and (3) they would have less impact on prey populations than higher salinity habitats assuming similar gray snapper densities.  相似文献

Anthropogenic metal pollutants bioaccumulated in benthic animals by means of feeding and osmotic diffusion. These metals may affect the physiology of the benthos. In this study, we exposed Capitella sp. I to three metals (Cd, Pb, and Ni), each in eight different concentrations, to determine the effects of metals on the animals. Growth rate, ingestion rate, and percent survival were estimated in three separated experiments. The growth and feeding of the worms were sensitive to even the lowest concentrations of each metal added to the sediments. The lowest observable adverse effect levels for Cd, Ni, and Pb were 0.03, 1.59, and 0.41 μmol g 1 sediment, respectively. Growth rates in the elevated metal contaminant treatments decreased drastically at slightly contaminated levels, lessened detrimental effects at moderately contaminated levels, and showed incompensable intoxication at heavily contaminated levels. The trends in ingestion rates were similar to those of growth rates. No significant difference in survivorship was found among the different contaminant levels for any of the three heavy metals. Capitella sp. I was most sensitive to Cd, followed by Ni and Pb, which had similar effects. The rapid physiological responses of Capitella sp. I allowed the animals to survive metal exposure. Sediment productivity remained unchanged at different contamination levels of Ni and Pb, but was drastically reduced at 4.75 μmol g 1 Cd in the sediment. This further demonstrated Capitella sp. I can adjust their ingestion rates to maintain constant sediment productivities in moderate pollution conditions; however, when threshold concentration was exceeded, homeostasis collapsed.  相似文献

Polyps of Actinia equina are the most common sea anemones in the rocky intertidal zone of the Mediterranean coast of Israel, where they occur in one of the southernmost populations of this species in the northern hemisphere. We examined effects of feeding rate on polyp growth at ambient sea temperature for this population. Under laboratory conditions, polyps were left unfed, or were fed with brine shrimp (Artemia) once every 2 weeks, once a week, or twice a week. Of the four experimental treatments, only feeding twice a week resulted in polyp growth; under all other regimes, the sea anemones lost body mass. We conclude that a high rate of feeding is required at sea temperatures in the eastern Mediterranean, where these sea anemones may have high metabolic rates relative to more northern populations.  相似文献

Bivalve molluscs, in common with consumers in general, use behavioral and physiological mechanisms to balance metabolic requirements with available nutrients. This study considered how the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, meets the demands of growth and maintenance, measured in terms of carbon and nitrogen, in a variable food environment. Stoichiometry theory helped to evaluate: a) whether feeding behaviour modifies the intake of C and N given seasonal variability in food quality: b) how rates of metabolism and excretion, and C and N growth efficiencies, respond to mismatch between nutrient intake and the oysters' needs. Two field experiments in the Port Stephens estuary, near Sydney, Australia, measured feeding behaviour, metabolic and growth rates relative to seasonal changes in food supply. In a laboratory experiment, relationships between physiological rates and growth were measured to test a model of growth as a function of absorption of C and N. Potential metabolic targets for compensation were the C/N ratios of body tissues, maintenance and/or of soft tissue added as growth. C/N of whole soft issues varied little during the year (mean 5.4). In July (a time of low food availability of poor quality) growth was negligible and the C/N (maintenance) target was 6.7. In March (abundant food of high quality) growth was rapid with a high N-demand; the C/N of growth was 3.9. In November (medium food quality) there was an enhanced C-demand for glycogen storage; the C/N of growth was 7.9. Feeding behaviour changed the balance between C and N intake across months, primarily due to changes in the selection efficiency for nitrogen, which was highest at low filtration rates on particles of high C/N ratio. Nitrogen intake was favoured over C in July. In November, C-intake increased relative to N. In March, when abundant food nitrogen coincided with a high demand for growth, feeding behaviour was neutral with respect to C/N ratios. In all cases C/N of absorbed matter was greater than the C/N of growth. Growth efficiencies for carbon declined with increased C/N of ingested matter due to higher metabolic increments (SDA) when feeding on lower food quality; the metabolic costs of growth did not vary. In contrast, growth efficiencies for nitrogen did not alter with C/N for ingested matter, due in part to increased nitrogen losses, relative to tissue nitrogen content, when feeding on low C/N food. Nitrogen was therefore conserved metabolically relative to C. Both feeding and metabolic processes contributed to compensation for the mismatch between seasonally variable food quality and the demands of growth.  相似文献

Potential for addressing ecological and physiological issues becomes severely limited when the organisms required to experimentally test specific hypotheses are absent from the study areas. This report describes a simple and inexpensive device for re-planting kelps into the lower intertidal zone of wave-swept rocky habitats, using Lessonia nigrescens Bory as a model organism. The device allows a wide range of plant sizes to be anchored by the holdfast. Transplanted kelps regenerated, re-attached to the substratum and overgrew the transplanting device. These results confirm the feasibility of using this technique to tackle a variety of highly relevant questions involving ecological, physiological, conservation, restoration and management issues.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the protein requirement of Clarias batrachus fry, were estimated at two different water temperatures, 28 and 32 °C. The influence of dietary protein level and water temperature on body composition, weight gain, food and nutrient utilization were estimated. The Asian catfish, C. batrachus fry were fed four diets containing 28% (diet 1), 32% (diet 2), 36% (diet 3) and 40% (diet 4) protein levels and reared at two water temperatures 28 and 32 °C for 60 days. Fry fed with diet 3 containing 36% protein showed the highest mean final body weight at 32 °C. Final body weight was significantly (P<0.05) affected by dietary treatments and temperatures. Clarias batrachus fry raised at 28 °C had higher feed efficiency (93.20%) than the fry reared at 32 °C (87.58%) with 28% dietary protein level. Further, feed efficiency decreased with increase in dietary protein level. Higher daily protein retention (0.089%) observed at lower (0.0217 g) daily protein intake at 28 °C than 0.0283 g at 32 °C. While, optimal (0.0282 g) daily protein intake showed higher daily weight gain at 32 °C. Productive protein value (% PPV) was maximum (1.76%) at 32 °C than at 28 °C (0.76%). Final body lipid recorded higher value than initial body lipid at both the temperatures. Hepatosomatic index (HSI) observed to have been influenced (P<0.05) by diets and temperatures, while viscerosomatic index (VSI) affected (P<0.05) by only diets and not (P>0.05) by temperatures. The study concluded that the diet 3 containing 36% protein was optimal for growth of C. batrachus fry at both the temperatures.  相似文献

During the period 2004-2008 the distribution, settlement, and growth of first-year shipworms (Teredo navalis L., 1758) was studied by exposing fir and oak panels in the Port of Rotterdam area, which is situated in the Rhine-Meuse estuary in the Netherlands and covers the complete salinity gradient. Shipworms were found yearly in the western large polyhaline harbours. On only a few occasions were they were found in harbours that showed large seasonal and daily fluctuations in salinity. In 2006 the shipworm was found in fir panels 20 km upstream from the polyhaline harbours, demonstrating their ability to travel with the tidal currents over considerable distances and to settle once the abiotic conditions become favourable. Although the water temperatures allowed them to breed from April until November, infestations were not found before September, and from the size of the animals in the panels it was concluded that in the Port of Rotterdam area they spawned from August until the end of November. The settlement height was negatively correlated with the distance of the panels to the sea floor. In the first season after settlement they showed a substantial growth rate of 0.18 cm day−1. The longest shipworm found measured 36.8 cm after 4-5 months of growth after settlement. Infestations and growth were lower in oak than in fir wood. In 2006 the maximum consumption of wood by individuals settled in the same year in panels at the bottom accounted for 12.4%. Shell size and body length of the animal after the first season of growth showed a significant positive logarithmic relation. In both 2006 and 2007 a similar relation between the average boring tube diameter and the length of the animals was found. Lower river discharges leading to salinisation of the eastern part of the Port of Rotterdam area create conditions favourable for the shipworm, with serious consequences for the piles upon which the quays are built.

相似文献

It is crucial to study how food resources are allocated in order to understand how invertebrate species of soft-bottomed benthic communities can live in the same environment, especially when belonging to the same trophic level. On the southern shore of the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary, the polychaetes Nereis virens (Nereidae) and Nephtys caeca (Nephtyidae) represent the main infaunal predators and are known to regulate (by predation) other populations within their community. For these animal populations, there is a high degree of spatial overlap in the horizontal dimension as well as vertically in the sediment column. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the feeding activity of N. virens and N. caeca in relation to several environmental factors. The feeding activity of N. caeca was further studied under natural and experimental conditions and a feeding experiment was carried out to evaluate how the food resource is subdivided in conditions of high spatial overlap. Finally, the prospecting activity of N. virens was described under natural conditions. N. virens and N. caeca exhibited a high degree of dietary overlap, particularly at the adult stage. This food resource overlap can easily influence the regulation of these species, even though they display different feeding responses to environmental stimuli. Tides and storm events can also influence the feeding behaviour. We conclude that different behavioural feeding responses likely favour the occurrence of these two species in the same trophic environment.  相似文献

The negative effects of climate alteration on coral reef fishes receive ever increasing attention; however, implications of rising sea temperatures on fishes inhabiting marine nursery environments are poorly understood. We used critical thermal methodology to quantify critical thermal maxima (CTmaxima) of juvenile squaretail mullet (Liza vaigiensis) and juvenile crescent terapon (Terapon jarbua) captured from shallow seagrass nursery areas around Hoga Island, southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. We tested the hypothesis that these distantly related fishes, when acclimated to cycling temperatures, would display higher CTmaxima than groups acclimated at constant temperatures. Groups of mullet acclimated to a constant temperature of 37 °C and temperature cycles of 35 to 39 °C or 37 to 41 °C displayed statistically similar mean CTmaxima of 44.7, 44.4 and 44.8 °C, respectively. Likewise, terapon acclimated at temperature cycles of 37 to 40 °C did not display a higher CTmaxima than fish acclimated at a constant temperature of 37 °C, with both acclimation groups' mean CTmaxima equal to 43.8 °C. Acclimation to higher cycling temperatures did not result in significant upper temperature tolerance acquisition for either species; however, mullet values were significantly higher than those seen in terapon (P < 0.0001). These data suggest that mullet and terapon will not suffer direct thermal effects should shallow nursery temperature increases be marginally higher than 1-2 °C above ~ 27 °C, and they provide evidence that the upper thermal tolerance of fishes inhabiting shallow seagrass and mangrove areas can approach the biokinetic limits for vertebrate life. Tropical marine fishes inhabiting fringing nursery environments may have the upper thermal tolerance necessary to endure substantial increases in sea temperatures.  相似文献

Herein I compare the relative importance of preference for structurally complex habitat against avoidance of competitors and predators in two benthic fishes common in the Gulf of Mexico. The code goby Gobiosoma robustum Ginsburg and clown goby Microgobius gulosus (Girard) are common, ecologically similar fishes found throughout the Gulf of Mexico and in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean. In Florida Bay, these fishes exhibit habitat partitioning: G. robustum is most abundant in seagrass-dominated areas while M. gulosus is most abundant in sparsely vegetated habitats. In a small-scale field survey, I documented the microhabitat use of these species where their distributions overlap. In a series of laboratory experiments, I presented each species with structured (artificial seagrass) versus nonstructured (bare sand) habitats and measured their frequency of choosing either habitat type. I then examined the use of structured versus nonstructured habitats when the two species were placed together in a mixed group. Finally, I placed a predator (Opsanus beta) in the experimental aquaria to determine how its presence influenced habitat selection. In the field, G. robustum was more abundant in seagrass and M. gulosus was more abundant in bare mud. In the laboratory, both species selected grass over sand in allopatry. However, in sympatry, M. gulosus occupied sand more often when paired with G. robustum than when alone. G. robustum appears to directly influence the habitat choice of M. gulosus: It seems that M. gulosus is pushed out of the structured habitat that is the preferred habitat of G. robustum. Thus, competition appears to modify the habitat selection of these species when they occur in sympatry. Additionally, the presence of the toadfish was a sufficient stimulus to provoke both M. gulosus and G. robustum to increase their selection for sand (compared to single-species treatments). Distribution patterns of M. gulosus and G. robustum likely result from a synthesis of various biotic and abiotic filters, including physiological tolerances to environmental factors, dispersal ability of larvae, and availability of food. Selection for structural complexity, competition, and presence of predators may further define the resulting pattern of distribution observed in the field.  相似文献
