The distal forelimb (autopodium) of quadrupedal mammals is a key morphological unit involved in locomotion, body support, and interaction with the substrate. The manus of the tapir (Perissodactyla: Tapirus ) is unique within modern perissodactyls, as it retains the plesiomorphic tetradactyl (four‐toed) condition also exhibited by basal equids and rhinoceroses. Tapirs are known to exhibit anatomical mesaxonic symmetry in the manus, although interspecific differences and biomechanical mesaxony have yet to be rigorously tested. Here, we investigate variation in the manus morphology of four modern tapir species (Tapirus indicus , Tapirus bairdii , Tapirus pinchaque , and Tapirus terrestris ) using a geometric morphometric approach. Autopodial bones were laser scanned to capture surface shape and morphology was quantified using 3D‐landmark analysis. Landmarks were aligned using Generalised Procrustes Analysis, with discriminant function and partial least square analyses performed on aligned coordinate data to identify features that significantly separate tapir species. Overall, our results support the previously held hypothesis that T. indicus is morphologically separate from neotropical tapirs; however, previous conclusions regarding function from morphological differences are shown to require reassessment. We find evidence indicating that T. bairdii exhibits reduced reliance on the lateral fifth digit compared to other tapirs. Morphometric assessment of the metacarpophalangeal joint and the morphology of the distal facets of the lunate lend evidence toward high loading on the lateral digits of both the large T. indicus (large body mass) and the small, long limbed T. pinchaque (ground impact). Our results support other recent studies on T. pinchaque , suggesting subtle but important adaptations to a compliant but inclined habitat. In conclusion, we demonstrate further evidence that the modern tapir forelimb is a variable locomotor unit with a range of interspecific features tailored to habitual and biomechanical needs of each species.  相似文献

We show a chiral symmetry conservation principle based on chemical kinetics using stochastic results. Suppose the chiral symmetry conservation is evoked, and our universe can be considered globally asymmetric. In that case, there are at least two mirrored asymmetric universes if all the chiral properties are strongly correlated. However, if the chiral correlations are weak or nonexistent, there are possibly Many-(Chiral-Symmetry)-Worlds. Alternatively, if our universe is only locally asymmetric, there could be a single universe with segregated chiral regions. The possible mechanisms of the primordial chiral symmetry breaking can only be found if the chiral symmetry is not truly conserved by assuming the initial racemic conditions. In that case, our universe is asymmetric and could be alone. On the other hand, if the chiral symmetry is conserved, there is no chance of finding the primordial chiral symmetry breaking. Based on this conservation (or not), it is possible to infer two opposite hypotheses, where two general scenarios about the chiral universes are possible.  相似文献

In PDB, more than half of the entries are structure complexes and of these complexes, most are symmetric, composed of identical subunits. Complex formation is the way through which larger structures and even molecular machines are assembled and built in nature. In this work, we apply group theory and carry out a comprehensive study of the global motion patterns of protein complexes of various symmetries. The work presents for the first time a comprehensive list of all the symmetric, aesthetically pleasing, global motion patterns available to complexes of cyclic, dihedral, tetrahedral, or octahedral symmetry. Our results clearly demonstrate that complexes with the same symmetry will have the same global motion patterns and thus may function in a similar way, and that there are only a finite number of global motion patterns available to symmetric complexes as the number of protein symmetry groups is effectively finite. The work complements our current understanding of the principle of complex formation that has been mostly structure‐based by providing novel dynamics‐based insights. Furthermore, as dynamics is closely tied to function, these motion patterns can provide global insights into the general functional mechanisms of protein complexes.  相似文献

植物花对称性与传粉系统密切相关, 花特征的变异性受到传粉者的选择作用。由于特化的传粉者对两侧对称的花的稳定选择, Berg假说认为两侧对称植物花大小的变异性比辐射对称植物的更低; 而且, 在传粉者的选择作用下花特征比植物营养特征明显有更低的变异性, 因为后者更易受环境影响。该文对青藏高原东部高山草甸植物群落的50种开花植物(包括19种两侧对称植物和31种辐射对称植物)的花和叶特征进行了测定和分析。结果表明不论是两侧对称植物还是辐射对称植物, 花大小的变异性都显著低于叶片大小的变异性, 表明传粉者对花施加的稳定选择有利于花的稳定性。但是, 辐射对称物种花大小的变异程度和两侧对称物种的相似, 即使在控制物种系统发育的影响后, 也没有发现显著的差异, 这与Berg假说不一致。高山生态系统中传粉者种类相对较少, 以熊蜂和蝇类为主, 传粉者的活动受局域气候环境影响较大, 因此传粉昆虫对植物花的选择作用强度可能有较大的变异性。  相似文献

The interpretation of cryo-electron tomograms of macromolecular complexes can be difficult because of the large amount of noise and because of the missing wedge effect. Here it is shown how the presence of rotational symmetry in a sample can be utilized to enhance the quality of a tomographic analysis. The orientation of symmetry axes in a sub-tomogram can be determined using a locked self-rotation function. Given this knowledge, the sub-tomogram density can then be averaged to improve its interpretability. Sub-tomograms of the icosahedral bacteriophage phiX174 are used to demonstrate the procedure.  相似文献

Knobs-into-holes is a well-validated heterodimerization technology for the third constant domain of an antibody. This technology has been used to produce a monovalent IgG for clinical development (onartuzumab) and multiple bispecific antibodies.1,2 The most advanced uses of this approach, however, have been limited to E. coli as an expression host to produce non-glycosylated antibodies. Here, we applied the technology to mammalian host expression systems to produce glycosylated, effector-function competent heterodimeric antibodies. In our mammalian host system, each arm is secreted as a heavy chain-light chain (H-L) fragment with either the knob or hole mutations to allow for preferential heterodimer formation in vitro with low levels of homodimer contaminants. Like full antibodies, the secreted H-L fragments undergo Fc glycosylation in the endoplasmic reticulum. Using a monospecific anti-CD20 antibody, we show that full antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) activity can be retained in the context of a knobs-into-holes heterodimer. Because the knobs-into-holes mutations convert the Fc into an asymmetric heterodimer, this technology was further used to systematically explore asymmetric recognition of the Fc. Our results indicate that afucosylation of half the heterodimer is sufficient to produce ADCC-enhancement similar to that observed for a fully afucosylated antibody with wild-type Fc. However, the most dramatic effect on ADCC activity is observed when two carbohydrate chains are present rather than one, regardless of afucosylation state.  相似文献

We have analyzed the conformations of EF‐lobes, adjacent pairs of EF‐hand domains, in a coordinate system based on the approximate two‐fold (z) axis that relates the two EF‐hands. Two parameters ‐ dE(ø), the azimuthal angle between the y‐axis and the projection of the offset vector to helix E onto the yz‐plane, and δdF(ø), the difference angle between the two helices (F1 and F2) of odd and even domains—characterize the openness of a single EF‐hand domain and of an EF‐lobe, respectively. We describe and compare values of dE(ø) and of δdF(ø) for EF‐hand proteins of five subfamilies—CTER, CPV, S100, PARV, CALP—in calci‐ and apo‐ forms, with and without bound target proteins. We noted no significant pollinator preference for symmetry in daisy (Asteraceae) flowers. Asymmetry of markings on Gorteria diffusa did not negatively affect pollinator visitation by bee-flies. Nevertheless, the flowers of this species tend to be symmetrically marked. Beetles did not discriminate against artificial daisy flowers which had petals placed in asymmetrical positions. We are sceptical about Moller's (1995) view that the symmetry of flowers is due to pollinator discrimination against asymmetrical flowers.  相似文献

Studies were made of the morphology and karyotype of accessions of H. asper, H. cannabinus and H. surattensis. There were six simple epicalyx segments in H. asper , nine in H. cannabinus and ten branched and leafy epicalyx segments in H. surattensis. Karyotypic analysis of the species showed a preponderance of median centromeres. H. surattensis had a more symmetrical karyotype and smaller chromosomes than H. asper and H. cannabinus. H. asper had the longest chromosomes. Ten of their chromosomes were significantly different in length, while four were significantly different in arm ratio.  相似文献

When people speak with one another, they tend to adapt their head movements and facial expressions in response to each others'' head movements and facial expressions. We present an experiment in which confederates'' head movements and facial expressions were motion tracked during videoconference conversations, an avatar face was reconstructed in real time, and naive participants spoke with the avatar face. No naive participant guessed that the computer generated face was not video. Confederates'' facial expressions, vocal inflections and head movements were attenuated at 1 min intervals in a fully crossed experimental design. Attenuated head movements led to increased head nods and lateral head turns, and attenuated facial expressions led to increased head nodding in both naive participants and confederates. Together, these results are consistent with a hypothesis that the dynamics of head movements in dyadicconversation include a shared equilibrium. Although both conversational partners were blind to the manipulation, when apparent head movement of one conversant was attenuated, both partners responded by increasing the velocity of their head movements.  相似文献

Corolla chirality, the pinwheel arrangement of petals within a flower, is found throughout the core eudicots. In 15 families, different chiral type flowers (i.e., right or left rotated corolla) exist on the same plant, and this condition is referred to as unfixed/enantiomorphic corolla chirality. There are no investigations on the significance of unfixed floral chirality on directed pollen movement even though analogous mirror image floral designs, for example, enantiostyly, has evolved in response to selection to direct pollinator and pollen movement. Here, we examine the role of corolla chirality on directing pollen transfer, pollinator behavior, and its potential influence on disassortative mating. We quantified pollen transfer and pollinator behavior and movement for both right and left rotated flowers in two populations of Hypericum perforatum. In addition, we quantified the number of right and left rotated flowers at the individual level. Pollinators were indifferent to corolla chirality resulting in no difference in pollen deposition between right and left flowers. Corolla chirality had no effect on pollinator and pollen movement between and within chiral morphs. Unlike other mirror image floral designs, corolla chirality appears to play no role in promoting disassortative mating in this species.  相似文献

A defining property of a crystal is its symmetry. This mini-review sets out to summarize all aspects that define 2D crystallographic symmetry as applied to the study of macromolecular structure. It begins by defining molecular point symmetries, before covering crystallographic symmetry operations in 2D, common notation, a summary of crystallographic plane groups and theoretical methods and important considerations for the identification and application of symmetry in 2D crystal images for 3D structure determination. While many of the concepts covered here may be equally applicable to point symmetry and space group symmetry in 3D, this review has been written from the perspective of 2D electron crystallography and deals specifically with symmetry operations and crystallographic space groups in 2D crystal projection images.  相似文献

The influence of native connectivity of secondary structure elements (SSE) on folding is studied using coarse-grained models of proteins with mixed alpha and beta structure and the analysis of the structural database of wild-type proteins. We found that the distribution of SSE along a sequence determines the diversity of folding pathways. If alpha and beta SSE are localized in different parts of a sequence, the diversity of folding pathways is restricted. An even (symmetric) distribution of alpha and beta SSE with respect to sequence midpoint favors multiple folding routes. Simulations are supplemented by the database analysis of the distribution of SSE in wild-type protein sequences. On an average, two-thirds of wild-type proteins with mixed alpha and beta structure have symmetric distribution of alpha and beta SSE. The propensity for symmetric distribution of SSE is especially evident for large proteins with the number of SSE > or = 10. We suggest that symmetric SSE distribution in protein sequences may arise due to nearly random allocation of alpha and beta structure along wild-type sequences. The tendency of long sequences to misfold is perhaps compensated by the enhanced pathway diversity. In addition, folding pathways are shown to progress via hierarchic assembly of SSE in accordance with their proximity along a sequence. We demonstrate that under mild denaturation conditions folding and unfolding pathways are similar. However, the reversibility of folding/unfolding pathways is shown to depend on the distribution of SSE. If alpha and beta SSE are localized in different parts of a sequence, folding and unfolding pathways are likely to coincide.  相似文献
