Photoresponses of motile phytoplanktonic flagellates have been widely studied, whereas the behavioural responses of these organisms to temperature, and their potential ecological consequences, have rarely been considered. This study investigated the population responses and individual swimming trajectories of five phylogenetically contrasting species of freshwater flagellates exposed to a gradient of temperature in micro-scale preference chambers. Population responses demonstrated a species-dependent diversity in thermoresponsive behaviour. Across a gradient of 9.8 to 15.1°;C which simulated the typical range of temperature across a thermocline in a temperate monomictic lake, Ceratium furcoides, Chlamydomonas moewusii, Dinobryon sertularia and Plagioselmis nannoplanctica all preferred the highest temperatures. In contrast, Euglena gracilis preferred the lowest temperature. Analysis of the swimming behaviour of individual cells confirmed preferences and demonstrated that, in all species, a combination of tactic and kinetic reactions was responsible for these accumulations. For the first time, controlled positive and negative thermotaxes towards a temperature preference were identified. This thermotactic orientation, in conjunction with a reduction in directionality of response in the preference zone and with ortho- and klino-thermokinesis, enabled cells to maintain position at preferred temperatures. Specifically, in all species apart from P. nannoplanctica, significant ortho-kinetic increases in swimming speed permitted rapid movement of cells away from unfavourable conditions, while a reduction in speed and a klino-kinetic increase in rate of turning (in all five species) maintained position within favoured temperatures. This ability to detect, orientate and accumulate within a temperature gradient may be triggered by physiological processes and presents ecological advantages. Behavioural response to temperature may optimize growth, influence the spatial and temporal distribution of flagellates, particularly the diel position of cells during migration, and contribute to the delineation of niche separation.  相似文献

The hypothesis that shoaling fish can obtain information about a predator's approach from changes in the behaviour of other shoal members was tested in an experiment in which receiver minnows (Phoxinus phoxinus) behind a one-way-mirror could observe the reaction of transmitter minnows threatened by the stalk of a pike (Esox lucius) model. Although the receiver minnows were out of visual contact with the pike model they decreased their foraging behaviour and started hiding when the pike model came towards the feeding patch of the transmitter fish. The presence of skittering behaviour and inspection behaviour in the transmitter but not in the receiver fish suggests that individual confirmation of the predator does play a role in determining the nature of the anti-predator response. Nevertheless there is clear evidence that receiver fish modify their own behaviour on the basis of information obtained from individuals which have seen a predator.  相似文献

We investigate models for animal feeding behaviour, with the aim of improving understanding of how animals organise their behaviour in the short term. We consider three classes of model: hidden Markov, latent Gaussian and semi-Markov. Each can predict the typical 'clustered' feeding behaviour that is generally observed, however they differ in the extent to which 'memory' of previous behaviour is allowed to affect future behaviour. The hidden Markov model has 'lack of memory', the current behavioural state being dependent on the previous state only. The latent Gaussian model assumes feeding/non-feeding periods to occur by the thresholding of an underlying continuous variable, thereby incorporating some 'short-term memory'. The semi-Markov model, by taking into account the duration of time spent in the previous state, can be said to incorporate 'longer-term memory'. We fit each of these models to a dataset of cow feeding behaviour. We find the semi-Markov model (longer-term memory) to have the best fit to the data and the hidden Markov model (lack of memory) the worst. We argue that in view of effects of satiety on short-term feeding behaviour of animal species in general, biologically suitable models should allow 'memory' to play a role. We conclude that our findings are equally relevant for the analysis of other types of short-term behaviour that are governed by satiety-like principles.  相似文献

The hypotheses that try to explain mobbing behaviour can be divided into three main classes: altruistic behaviour, parental care and selfish behaviour. To try to distinguish between these hypotheses, I presented 12 Arabian babblers,Turdoides squamiceps , with a snake model, both alone and together with another babbler. Seven components of mobbing were compared in the two situations. Single babblers that were exposed to a snake model carried out mobbing-like behaviour. Mobbing in the absence of an audience or additional participants shows that it is basically a selfish behaviour, and suggests that it is an antipredator behaviour. No difference was found between males and females, and mobbing by two participants together was more intensive than mobbing by each of them on its own. These findings support the prey-predator communication hypothesis. However, the different hypotheses explaining mobbing are not exclusive, and this study does not exclude other hypotheses as secondary explanations. Viscoelastic behaviour of isolated tomato fruit cuticle (CM) is well known and extensively described. Temperature and hydration conditions modify the mechanical properties of CM. Mechanical data from previous transient‐creep analysis developed in tomato fruit cuticle under different temperature and hydration conditions have been used to propose a rheological model that describes the viscoelastic nature of CM. As a composite material, the biomechanical behaviour of the plant cuticle will depend not only on the mechanical characteristics of the individual components by themselves but also on the sum of them. Based on this previous information, we proposed a two‐element model to describe the experimental behaviour: an elastic hookean element connected in parallel to a viscous element or Voigt element that will describe the mechanical behaviour of the isolated CM and cutin under the studied conditions. The main parameters of the model, E1 and E2 will reflect the elastic and viscoelastic behaviour of the cuticle. Relationship between these physical parameters and the change in CM properties were discussed in order to elucidate the rheological processes taking place in CM. This model describes both the influence of temperature and hydration and the behaviour of the isolated cutin and the inferred contribution of the cuticle fraction of polysaccharides when the whole cuticle is tested.  相似文献

Social behaviour of animals, i.e. interspecies contacts, were studied in a population of silver foxes in the longitudinal model domestication experiment. Three social behaviour traits were analysed: contactibility, critical distance and domestication index. The latter trait is a linear function of elementary behaviour reactions, postures induced by man which is determined by the principal components method. The most valiable selection phenotype for further modelling of domestication, as shown by the capacity to adequately reflect a pattern of genotype--environment interaction, the structure of correlation ratios for different forms of behaviour and the level of genetic relationships between relatives, is the domestication index.  相似文献

The temporal behaviours of the nonlinear substructure of a self-organized compartmental model of calcium metabolism were investigated. The order-two autocatalytic process included in this simple two-dimensional model is compared to some secondary nucleation mechanisms which should take place at the extracellular fluid-bone interface. The model gives rise to complex dynamic behaviours, and multistability properties, involving up to two stable periodic regimes (birhythmicity), were established in different topological configurations. The bifurcations occurring on the boundaries between regions of different qualitative behaviour have been determined. These properties are discussed in relation to the dynamical behaviour of other two-variable models, especially those including the same nonlinearity.  相似文献

Male natterjack toads, Bufo calamita, sometimes called to attract females and sometimes behaved as silent satellites, attempting to intercept females attracted by callers. Small males with low intensity calls most frequently adopted the satellite tactic and preferred to parasitize the loudest callers. Because body size and call intensity were highly correlated with male mating success, small males with weak calls were at a reproductive disadvantage, and probably achieved greater success by exploiting the displays of larger, louder males than by calling themselves. The behaviour adopted by individual males in a given situation was predicted by a game theory model which assumed that males used an evolutionarily stable decision rule when choosing between alternative mating tactics. However, the model provided close agreement with observed behaviour only when it assumed that males have imperfect information about the behaviour of competitors. It is concluded that male toads adopt a conditional strategy which depends on their attractiveness to females. By switching between mating tactics appropriately, males maximized expected mating success within the constraint of the information available to them. The decision rule of the model qualitatively corresponds to a proximate mechanism that males appeared to use when switching between tactics. The model offers insights into the behaviour of other species in which males display in groups to attract females.  相似文献

On the basis of the elaborated experimental model for testing of emotional interaction of animals individual typification of behaviour was established according to which all experimental male rats of August line were subdivided into groups: I--rats manifesting behaviour of avoidance, "victims" of electrocutaneous stimulation; II--without definite behaviour with respect to the "victim" rat; III--rats, preferring the behaviour determining electrocutaneous stimulation of the "victim" rat. All typified animals were subjected to emotional stress with the use of the elaborated experimental model of aggressive-conflict behaviour. Stability against emotional stress of each group of animals was studied. Significant differences were established of stability degree to emotional stress of the rats of three groups manifesting different types of behavioural reaction in conditions of emotional interaction. The most stable were rats of the I group, the least--of the III group; rats of the II group were in the middle position. Typification on the basis of testing of emotional interaction of animals allows to prognosticate individual stability against emotional stress.  相似文献

This paper examines the biosocial basis of premarital sexual and reproductive behaviour among women in Sudan. It applies Udry's biosocial perspective, which attempts to reconcile the biological and sociological models of premarital sexual and reproductive behaviour. World Fertility Survey (WFS) data were used to study premarital first motherhood. Early puberty was found to be paramount in determining childbearing in a separate biological model, but also in a biosocial model constructed to take account of social controls. This finding suggests that social controls do not influence the biological predisposition to premarital sexual behaviour. However, given the limitations of the WFS data, conclusive evidence must await a more appropriately designed study of reproductive behaviour in Sudan.  相似文献

The actin cytoskeleton is intimately involved in the motile behaviour of animal cells. The structure and dynamic behaviour of actin and its binding proteins have been intensively studied in vitro over the past several decades, culminating in achievements such as an atomic model of the actin filament. Despite this progress, it is not yet clear how the behaviour of these purified proteins in vitro relates to the dynamic behaviour of actin inside living, moving cells. Here we discuss a new model that relates the known dynamic parameters for pure actin to the observed behaviour of actin filaments inside motile cells.  相似文献

Variability in drug intake is increasingly recognized as a major source of variability in drug response. The non-uniform access to medicated feed, influenced by swine individual feeding behaviour, is a determinant of antibiotic exposure, recalling the intrinsic similarity with human compliance to drug regimens. In this paper, we developed a feeding behaviour-pharmacokinetic (FBPK) model of in-feed chlortetracycline (CTC) and established, in a definite way, the effect of feeding behaviour and its induced pharmacokinetic (PK) variability. Based on reported animal behaviour, we mathematically formulated swine feeding behaviour by incorporating its main characteristics: intense feeding periods that repeat on a daily basis and random feeding periods of free access to feed, along with growth stage factors. This behaviour model was then integrated into a PK model of CTC. Moreover, we analysed the effect of each feeding behaviour component and assessed the corresponding PK variability. We have been able to delineate the impact of different feeding behaviour components and characterize the induced PK variability. We have compared different therapeutic assumptions to our model and shown that random features underlying the feeding behaviour have dramatic influence on the PK variability. A practical tool to adopt the dosing regimen in terms of dose and age has been proposed. The method developed here can be generalized to other therapeutic contexts and incorporated into medical practice, particularly to make long-term projections of drug-intake behaviour, to explain possible treatment failure and guide practitioners in adjusting the dosing regimen.  相似文献

There are increasing opportunities for robots to work amongst animals in agricultural systems. One potential application is in herding animals prior to catching or transportation. An effective herding robot must be able to interrupt ongoing animal behaviour without causing panic or flight reactions. The extent to which different approaching stimuli interrupted the feeding behaviour of pairs of domestic ducklings was examined to assess their suitability as herding stimuli. Experiment 1 assessed the responses of ducklings to an approaching human (the most likely current herding stimulus), a vertical cylinder (a stimulus with the minimum features of a simple robot) and a model fox (simulating the more natural features of a predator). Interruption of feeding was greatest in response to the human and least to the cylinder. Experiment 2 found no significant difference in the extent to which feeding was interrupted when facial appearance and head orientation of the model fox were manipulated. Experiment 3 examined whether biologically realistic features of the model fox affected duckling response. At a distance of 7 m, photographs of the model fox interrupted feeding behaviour as much as the model itself. However, at a distance of 1 m, the model fox caused significantly more feeding interruption than an intact photograph. A fragmented photograph caused the least interruption of feeding behaviour.  相似文献

An analysis of the behaviour of the soil system considered as an active medium with distributed energy sources was undertaken. This approach enabled the authors to build a heuristic model of soil which accounts for processes of organic substance production, migration and utilisation. The soil body is presented as a spatially distributed trophic chain with non-linear interactions of adjacent links. The level of this non-linearity appears to be the key parameter determining the dynamic behaviour of the model system in one-, two- and three-dimensional cases. The conditions for the existence of pulse-generating and autowave modes in this system were determined by computer simulations. Of particular interest is the behaviour of damaged soil, especially its self-regeneration potential. Inoculation autowave was proven to restore the initial state of the soil if two adjacent or separated trophic links fall out. Possible ways of the further development of the proposed model are also discussed.  相似文献

In snails changes of defensive and alimentary behaviour and of reactions of command and modulator neurones of these kinds of behaviour were studied during elaboration of sensitization. After a single action of 50% chinine solution on mollusc's head, a short-term (during 50-70 min) and long-term (hours or days) facilitation was found of animals defensive reactions and responses of command neurones of defensive behaviour to tactile and chemical sensory stimuli. Alimentary behaviour of the snails and reactions of modulator neurones of alimentary behaviour to carrot juice presentation were inhibited in sensitized animals. Dynamics differences of defensive responses to tactile and chemical stimuli in the same sensitized animals were observed. Short-term responses facilitation under sensitization correlated chiefly with depolarization of the membrane potential of defensive behaviour neurones and with an increase of plasmatic membrane excitability. Prolonged facilitation of responses was due mainly to a change of effectiveness of synaptic transmission. The described model of sensitization elaboration can be a base for studying of molecular-cellular mechanisms, underlying the learning.  相似文献

In recent years, it has been recognised that improvements to classic models of muscle mechanical behaviour are often necessary for properly modelling co-ordinated multi-joint actions. In this respect, the purpose of the present study was to improve on modelling stretch-induced force enhancement and shortening-induced force depression of muscle contraction. For this purpose, two models were used: a modified Hill model and a model based loosely on mechano-chemistry of the cross-bridge cycle (exponential decay model). The models were compared with a classic Hill model and experimental data. Parameter values were based, as much as possible, on experimental findings in the literature, and tested with new experiments on the gastrocnemius of the rat. Both models describe many features of slow-ramp movements well during short contractions (300–500 ms), but long-duration behaviour is described only partly. The exponential decay model does not incorporate a force–velocity curve. Therefore, its good performance indicates that the status of the classic force–velocity characteristic may have to be reconsidered. Like movement-induced force depression and enhancement, it seems a particular manifestation of time-dependent force behaviour of muscle, rather than a fundamental property of muscle (like the length–tension curve). It is argued that a combination of the exponential decay model (or other models based on the mechano-chemistry of contraction) and structurally based models may be fruitful in explaining this time-dependent contraction behaviour. Furthermore, not in the least because of its relative simplicity, the exponential decay model may prove more suitable for modelling multi-joint movements than the Hill model. We describe a model for the alternation between two activities. Each activity has an associated tendency, and the model performs the activity with the higher tendency. The tendencies depend on both negative and positive feedback from the performance of the activities. In general the behaviour of the model is periodic, with bout, durations that depend on the ratio of the maximum response rates. Increasing the maximum rate of a behaviour increases the magnitude of its bouts. The behaviour of the model is similar in several respects to the model developed by Ludlow (1980), which suggests that it may not be easy to distinguish between various models of feeding and drinking behaviour.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to characterise the in-plane mechanical behaviour of human skin in vivo. For this purpose the structural skin model proposed by Lanir [1] is employed and a mixed numerical-experimental method is developed. The numerical-experimental method is based on the confrontation of measured data from an experiment, with calculated data from a finite element model, eventually leading to the determination of some of the parameters of a constitutive model, in the present case Lanir's Skin Model. Since collagen, the main constituent of skin, dominates the anisotropic and non-linear behaviour of skin, the parameters of Lanir's Skin Model concerning the mechanical behaviour of the collagen fibres are estimated. In vivo experiments were carried out on the volar forearm. During the experiments, reaction forces and the displacement field at different states of deformation are measured. Both data sets are used for the determination of the parameters.  相似文献

The objective of the present study is to determine the passive transverse mechanical properties of skeletal muscle. Compression experiments were performed on four rat tibialis anterior muscles. To assess the stress- and strain-distributions in the muscle during the experiment, a plane stress model of the cross section was developed for each muscle. The incompressible viscoelastic Ogden model was used to describe the passive muscle behaviour. The four material parameters were determined by fitting calculated indentation forces on measured indentation forces. The elastic parameters, mu and alpha, were 15.6+/-5.4 kPa and 21.4+/-5.7, respectively. The viscoelastic parameters, delta and tau, were 0.549+/-0.056 and 6.01+/-0.42 s. When applying the estimated material parameters in a three-dimensional finite element model, the measured behaviour can be accurately simulated.  相似文献

A suite of models was used to examine the links between climate, fuels and fire behaviour in dry eucalypt forests in south‐eastern Australia. Predictions from a downscaled climate model were used to drive models of fuel amount, the moisture content of fuels and two models of forest fire behaviour at a location in western Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. We found that a warming and drying climate produced lower fine fuel amounts, but greater availability of this fuel to burn due to lower moisture contents. Changing fuel load had only a small effect on fuel moisture. A warmer, drier climate increased rate of spread, an important measure of fire behaviour. Reduced fuel loads ameliorated climate‐induced changes in fire behaviour for one model. Sensitivity analysis of the other fire model showed that changes in fuel amount induced changes in fire behaviour of a similar magnitude to that caused directly by sensitivity to climate. Projection of changes in fire risk requires modelling of changes in vegetation as well as changes in climate. Better understanding of climate change effects on vegetation structure is required.  相似文献
