Individuals prone to anxiety and depression often report beliefs and make judgements about themselves that are more negative than those reported by others. We use computational modeling of a richly naturalistic task to disentangle the role of negative priors versus negatively biased belief updating and to investigate their association with different dimensions of Internalizing psychopathology. Undergraduate participants first provided profiles for a hypothetical tech internship. They then viewed pairs of other profiles and selected the individual they would prefer to work alongside out of each pair. In a subsequent phase of the experiment, participants made judgments about their relative popularity as hypothetical internship partners both before any feedback and after each of 20 items of feedback revealing whether or not they had been selected as the preferred teammate from a given pairing. Scores on latent factors of general negative affect, anxiety-specific affect and depression-specific affect were estimated using participants’ self-report scores on standardized measures of anxiety and depression together with factor loadings from a bifactor analysis conducted previously. Higher scores on the depression-specific factor were linked to more negative prior beliefs but were not associated with differences in belief updating. In contrast, higher scores on the anxiety-specific factor were associated with a negative bias in belief updating but no difference in prior beliefs. These findings indicate that, to at least some extent, distinct processes may impact the formation of belief priors and in-the-moment belief updating and that these processes may be differentially disrupted in depression and anxiety. Future directions for enquiry include examination of the possibility that prior beliefs biases in depression might reflect generalization from prior experiences or global schema whereas belief updating biases in anxiety might be more situationally specific.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out in order to clarify the color perception of Japanese wild boarsSus scrofa leucomystax. Two females were trained using an operant conditioning technique to press a switch under a positive stimulus color card in order to receive food as a reward. In Exp. 1, they were tested for discrimination between 3 colors (red, green and blue) and gray. The luminosity of all colors was the same. The wild boars succeeded in discrimination tests between blue and gray, but failed to discriminate red from gray. They also did not discriminate green from gray so clearly as blue from gray. In Exp. 2, the same wild boars were tested to discriminate between 8 kinds of color, which were created by gradating green yellow into red purple except for the 3 colors used in Exp. 1, and gray. They could clearly discriminate blue, purple blue and a part of purple from gray. In these experiments, wild boars were capable of recognizing bluish colors. However, for colors approaching green or yellow, they failed the test by degrees.  相似文献

Colours are common stimuli in signalling systems. Requirements to function well as a signal sometimes conflict between different signallers, and the same colour stimulus is used to convey completely different messages to the same receiver. Fruits and aposematic insects both use red coloration as a signal, in the former case to signal profitability and in the latter case as a warning signal. In two experiments, we investigated whether the domestic chick, an omnivorous predator, differed in its unconditioned preference or avoidance of red and green stimuli depending on whether or not the stimulus was an insect. The experiments were designed as preference tests between red and green painted prey. The prey were live insects and artificial fruits (experiment 1), and, to investigate the effect of movement, live and dead insects (experiment 2). The chicks did not show any difference in pecking preference between red and green when fruit-like stimuli were used, but when the prey were insects, green prey were strongly preferred to red prey, and prey movement did not affect this bias. Thus, young chicks may recognize prey as insects and then discriminate between different prey colorations, or one type of food may elicit an unlearned colour preference-avoidance response that is absent with another type of food.  相似文献

Females of the apple maggot fly,Rhagoletis pomonella, were allowed for 3 days to alight upon and oviposit in green or red 18- to 20-mm hawthorn host fruit (Crategus mollis) or green or red 45- to 55-mm apple host fruit (Malus pumila) hung from branches of potted host trees in field enclosures. Subsequently, when females were released individually on potted host trees harboring fruit of one of these types, their ability to find fruit of unfamiliar size proved unaffected by prior experience with fruit but their ability to find fruit of unfamiliar color was significantly affected. Specifically, females exposed to red hawthorns or red apples were less able to find green hawthorns or green apples than were females experienced with either of the latter fruit types. Fruit odor was found to have no effect on female ability to find familiar compared with unfamiliar green fruit. In contrast, a difference in size (or surface chemistry) between familiar and unfamiliar fruit but not a difference in fruit color had a significant negative influence on the propensity of alighting females to bore into unfamiliar fruit. Three bouts of experience with alighting upon and ovipositing into fruit over a period of about 1 h had no detectable effect on female ability to find unfamiliar fruit but did reduce propensity to bore into unfamiliar fruit. Our findings are discussed in relation to insect ability to learn visual and chemical stimuli of resources and insect propensity to form host races. We also discuss the potential impact of our findings on nonpesticidal, behavioral methods of managingR. pomonella in commercial apple orchards.  相似文献

The common shore crab Carcinus maenas exhibits a range of carapace colours from green through orange to red, green forms showing some differences of distribution from red/orange forms. To test the hypothesis that colour differences were moult-related, large numbers of Carcinus were collected intertidally and subtidally in summer when moulting is most prevalent, and their moult stages determined. Red and orange coloration was found only to occur in the larger size classes in crabs in prolonged intermoult, but not solely in the largest crabs in terminal anecdysis. Red crabs were characterized by a heavier load of epibionts and a strong, thicker carapace. In contrast, green crabs were found over the entire size range and appeared to be actively moulting forms; they carried fewer epibionts and had a thinner integument than red forms. The significance of morphological differences between red/orange and green forms of Carcinus maenas is considered in relation to previously reported behavioural, physiological and ecological differences between the colour forms.  相似文献

Three hundred and forty-two consumers participated in a study examining slight color variation in orange juice. Panelists evaluated two orange juice samples; unadulterd juice and the same juice with a slight green off-color. The color manipulation reduced consumer acceptance of the color of the adulterated sample but had little influence on ratings of flavor, sweetness or overall liking. Older panelists were more strongly influenced by the color manipulation and showed a clear preference for the flavor of the control sample as compared to the adulterated sample. These data suggest that color was important for the visual appeal of orange juice, but the color change alone was not sufficient to alter consumer acceptance of this product.  相似文献

Spermatozoa obtained from fish (Clarias gariepinus), human (Homo sapiens), turkeys (Meleagris gallapova), rats (Rattus norvegicus), hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), and monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were stained with acridine orange before measuring fluorescence by flow cytometry. These mature sperm from various species produced different intensities of fluorescence while displaying similar ratios of red/green fluorescence. Comparison of the green fluorescence values for the various species showed the sequence (descending order of fluorescence values) human, turkey, monkey, hamster, rat and fish. The DNA complement (as base pairs in the haploid genome) of the various species did not increase in direct proportion to the fluorescence values. This suggests that the DNA was not equally accessible to the dye in the different species tested. The similarity in ratios of red/green fluorescence suggests that the structure of DNA in the chromatin is similar in the different species but abnormal 'satellite' populations of cells that show higher red/green fluorescence ratios than the parent population have been found in sperm samples from monkeys and from some infertile men. Their high red fluorescence intensities were not caused by RNA because treatment with RNAse did not alter the red fluorescence. It is possible that these cells contain larger amounts of denatured (single stranded) DNA.  相似文献

In two discrimination training studies, we noted improvements in the ability of healthy individuals to discriminate between respiratory sensations. We trained individuals to discriminate between respiratory sensations elicited during inspiration in Experiment 1 and during expiration in Experiment 2. We elicited respiratory sensations by having participants breathe through circuits that differed in their resistance to air flow. Training, in both experiments, was conducted within the context of a task in which individuals judged which member of a series of respiratory circuit pairs was easier to breathe through. To improve the accuracy of judgments, we gave participants feedback of their performance, and we faded air flow resistance. The latter procedure consisted of presenting circuit pairs in order of increasing similarity. Individuals who received performance feedback with fading of air flow resistance demonstrated reliable improvements in discrimination from pre- to posttraining in both experiments, but controls, who received either performance feedback or practice in discrimination did not. These findings may contribute to improving awareness of respiratory sensations in asthma patients, and thereby bolster efforts to manage asthma.This research was supported by a Biomedical Research Support Grant from the National Institute of Health to Ohio University and by an Academic Challenge Grant from the State of Ohio to the Ohio University Psychology Department.  相似文献

Several studies have assessed the role of bill colour in sexual selection and especially with respect to sexual preferences. Even though there are indications that bill colour is related to male quality, so far it has not been shown that bill colour influences male-male interaction. We used male zebra finches with artificially coloured bills in a competitive context to measure the effect of bill colour. In these tests the experimental bird could choose between two feeding sites, each near a stimulus bird with a different bill colour. We tested orange against red, no bird against orange/red and orange/red against green respectively. We found no difference in behaviour towards an orange compared to a red billed stimulus. However the birds spent relatively more time eating when alone compared to being close to a potential competitor. In addition, more time was spent eating than on other behaviours when the birds were close to the orange/red billed stimulus compared to the green billed stimulus. So, although no effect was found in the orange against red test, the results suggest that bill colour may play some role in male-male interaction.  相似文献

Sensory attenuation refers to the observation that self-generated stimuli are attenuated, both in terms of their phenomenology and their cortical response compared to the same stimuli when generated externally. Accordingly, it has been assumed that sensory attenuation might help individuals to determine whether a sensory event was caused by themselves or not. In the present study, we investigated whether this dependency is reciprocal, namely whether sensory attenuation is modulated by prior beliefs of authorship. Participants had to judge the loudness of auditory effects that they believed were either self-generated or triggered by another person. However, in reality, the sounds were always triggered by the participants' actions. Participants perceived the tones' loudness attenuated when they believed that the sounds were self-generated compared to when they believed that they were generated by another person. Sensory attenuation is considered to contribute to the emergence of people's belief of authorship. Our results suggest that sensory attenuation is also a consequence of prior belief about the causal link between an action and a sensory change in the environment.  相似文献

It has long been assumed that bees cannot see red. However, bees visit red flowers, and the visual spectral sensitivity of bees extends into wavelengths to provide sensitivity to such flowers. We thus investigated whether bees can discriminate stimuli reflecting wavelengths above 560 nm, i.e., which appear orange and red to a human observer. Flowers do not reflect monochromatic (single wavelength) light; specifically orange and red flowers have reflectance patterns which are step functions, we thus used colored stimuli with such reflectance patterns. We first conditioned honey bees Apis mellifera to detect six stimuli reflecting light mostly above 560 nm and found that bees learned to detect only stimuli which were perceptually very different from a bee achromatic background. In a second experiment we conditioned bees to discriminate stimuli from a salient, negative (un-rewarded) yellow stimulus. In subsequent unrewarded tests we presented the bees with the trained situation and with five other tests in which the trained stimulus was presented against a novel one. We found that bees learned to discriminate the positive from the negative stimulus, and could unambiguously discriminate eight out of fifteen stimulus pairs. The performance of bees was positively correlated with differences between the trained and the novel stimulus in the receptor contrast for the long-wavelength bee photoreceptor and in the color distance (calculated using two models of the honeybee colors space). We found that the differential conditioning resulted in a concurrent inhibitory conditioning of the negative stimulus, which might have improved discrimination of stimuli which are perceptually similar. These results show that bees can detect long wavelength stimuli which appear reddish to a human observer. The mechanisms underlying discrimination of these stimuli are discussed. Our earlier psychophysical work has shown that colour and motion are not perceived at the same time, with colour leading motion by about 50-100 ms. In pursuing this work, we thought it would be interesting to use a more complex colour stimulus, one in which the wavelength composition of the light reflected or emitted from surfaces changes continually, without entailing a change in the perceived colour (colour constancy). We therefore used a Mondrian figure--an abstract multi-coloured scene with no recognizable objects--against which squares (either red or green) moved up and down, changing colour from red to green in various phase differences with the change in direction of motion. The red and green squares changed continually in their spectral characteristics, as did every other patch on the Mondrian. The results showed that colour is still perceived before motion, by about 80 ms.  相似文献

Synopsis The Asian cichlids,Etroplus maculatus (the orange chromide) and E. suratensis (the green chromide) in Sri Lanka reproduce twice during the year when water conditions are favorable for nest construction and maintaining visual contact with offspring. These are the drier premonsoonal and monsoonal seasons when water turbidity decreased and salinity increased. When breeding in isolation orange chromide pairs selected dense vegetation where nests were camouflaged. During the peak breeding cycle (July) orange chromide pairs selected sparse vegetation for nesting as a compromise between survival of young and availability of adult food. These areas were also occupied by foraging non-breeding conspecifics which increased the threat of cannibalism of offspring. Under these pressures most orange chromides nested in colonies which helped decrease both actual and attempted cannibalism. The sympatric green chromide does not forage during nesting and nest site selection was determined mainly by factors favoring offspring survival. Biparental care is exhibited by both species. One member of an orange chromide pair stands guard over offspring while the other leaves the territory to forage — their roles are reversed every few minutes. The total parental investment is equivalent to the full investment of a single parent. Monogamy appears to be maintained by their metabolic constraints. In the green chromide both parents are vigilant over offspring and neither forages thus spending twice as much time in parental investment.  相似文献

为探明红火蚁Solenopsis invicta工蚁对颜色信号的选择与利用,本研究测定了不同颜色色卡对工蚁的趋向行为以及不同颜色饵料对工蚁觅食行为的影响,以期为红火蚁的高效监测与防控提供重要基础。结果表明颜色显著影响了红火蚁工蚁的趋向行为,黑色对工蚁的引诱率最高,可达32%;黄色对工蚁的引诱率最低,仅为7%。研究也发现不同颜色的饵料显著影响了红火蚁工蚁的觅食。在5 min时间内,工蚁在黄色、绿色以及蓝色饵料上觅食的数量最多,显著高于在紫色和黑色上饵料的觅食工蚁数;工蚁对红色、橙色、黄色、绿色、蓝色饵料的搬运量最大,显著高于紫色与黑色的饵料。综上,红火蚁工蚁可以识别与利用颜色信号,在制备红火蚁监测与防控饵剂时,可以考虑将饵剂染色红、橙、黄、绿、蓝等反射波长较长的颜色,以便工蚁能快速定位到饵剂并搬运更多的饵剂到蚁巢中。  相似文献

Freshly harvested rat peritoneal mast cells were stained with different concentrations of acridine orange, a metachromatic fluorochrome known to form complexes with chromatin and muscopolysaccharides. Fluorescence metachromasia was observed in cytoplasmic granules in cell populations with intracelluar dye contents as low as 5 X 10(-16) mole per cell, one-half decade lower than required to produce metachromatic staining of the nucleus. Cytoplasmic granules did not stain uniformly throughout the cell; some granules exhibited red fluorescence and others green. As the amount of acridine orange uptake per cell was increased, cytoplasmic fluorescence became uniformly red and nuclear fluorescence gradually changed from green to yellow.  相似文献

In order to investigate how the flavor of fresh tea-leaves turn into that of green tea, six essential oils were obtained from chopped fresh tea-leaves, whole tea-leaves, and their residues after steaming, green tea and black tea by steam-distillation. They are then compared with each other in regard to their flavor, amount of I2-absorption, βγ-hexenol content and ultraviolet spectrum. It is concluded that the change mentioned above is produced partly by fleeing of βγ-hexenol and partly by some chemical change concerning βγ-hexenol.  相似文献

Using light-emitting diode spotlights, we examined the responses of Cotesia vestalis, a parasitoid of diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella larvae, with different hunger level to different chromatic cues. Naïve satiated female wasps showed no significant preference for either green, yellow, orange, or red spotlighted areas over a control area with background fluorescent light. When starved for 2 h, female wasps preferred yellow and green light over the control area, but not orange or red light. We also tested the effects of DBM-larvae-induced cabbage-plant volatiles, which attract female wasps, on wasp responses to green versus yellow light. In control experiments with no plant volatiles, starved wasps showed no color preference. However, when synthetic volatiles were present, the wasps preferred green over yellow light. We concluded that both hunger level and herbivore-induced plant volatiles were important factors affecting the response of parasitic wasps to light of different color.  相似文献

Fresh, unprocessed bone is ground to sections 75-100 μ thick, stained in an aqueous solution composed of fast green FCF, 0.1 gm; orange G, 2.0 gm; distilled water, 100.0 ml; and adjusted to pH 6.65, then in a mixture of 1 part alcoholic solution of 0.25% celestine blue B and 9 parts of alcoholic solution of 0.1% basic fuchsin. Surface stain is removed by grinding sections to 50 μ and washing them in 1% invert soap (Zephiran) to remove adherent debris. (Commercial detergents and alkaline soaps may interfere with chromophore groups of the dyes.) Wash in tap water; rinse in distilled water and differentiate in 1% acetic alcohol. Dehydrate in ascending alcohols, clear in xylene and mount permanently in a neutral, synthetic resin. Active osteoid seams stain dark to light green; resting osteoid seams, red to bright orange red; transitional osteoid seams, geenish-yellow, orange red to red; older, partly mineralized matrix, orange; new, partly mineralized matrix, red; osteocyte nuclei, red; osteoblasts and osteoclasts, greenish-blue to dark purple nuclei and green or light green cytoplasm. Hyper-trophic and differentiating cartilage cells are stained light pink and dark red respectively. The staining reactions are consistent; the solutions are stable.  相似文献
