The paper addresses the question of the correspondence between constituent order in compounds and in syntax. While a strictly synchronic perspective does not lead us to any significant generalization as ascertained by Bauer (Language typology and language universals, Mouton de Gruyter, Berlin 2001), adopting a diachronic point of view allows us to formulate the question in general terms by making reference to the logical problem of what is the transition permitted from a certain synchronic stage to another. On the basis of a large language sample, it is shown that constituent order in compounds heavily relies on syntax. This must be understood in the terms of a diachronic universal reflecting Hawkins’ (Word order universals, Academic Press, New York 1983) Double Acquisition Hypothesis. For this specific property of compounds, morphology does not seem to be autonomous from syntax, albeit the relation between morphology and syntax must be thought of as a multi-faceted one.  相似文献

In the late-Middle Ages and at the onset of the early modern period, the Dutch population was taller than in the first half of the 19th century. This inference is partially based on skeletal evidence, mainly collected by the Dutch physical anthropologist George Maat and his co-workers. A spectacular increase in Dutch heights began in the second half of the 19th century and accelerated in the second half of the 20th century. Summary Both paraformaldehyde and formaldehyde undergo reactions in the presence of several inorganic compounds to generate a variety of interesting organic products that can be important in chemical evolutionary processes. Some examples are acrolein, acetaldehyde, methyl formate, methanol, glycolaldehyde and formic acid. The organic compounds are produced at temperatures as low as 56°C and in high yield (up to 75%). The quantity produced depends principally on the nature of the inorganic compound, the ratio of the inorganic compound to paraformaldehyde, temperature and reaction time. Why do recent converts in new evangelical churches desire to be re-baptized by immersion despite their previous infant baptism in mainline churches? This article addresses this question through a discussion of the observed shift in baptism practices from that of ‘sprinkling’ infants (in Protestant mainline churches) to full bodily immersion of adults (in new evangelical churches) in the Netherlands. Based on an ethnographic comparison of these two baptism practices, I demonstrate the performative effect of rituals as well as the importance of connections between material forms, embodiment and doctrines. The call for different baptism practices, I suggest, illustrates a broader shift in Dutch Protestantism from a didactic to an experiential form of Christianity in which the encounter with the sacred is increasingly located in the body. At the same time, it demonstrates how religious authority has moved from institutions to individual believers.  相似文献

The surface water layer of a 70 km wide area along the Dutch coast has been sampled monthly from (February) 1973 to (August) 1984, as part of a water quality assessment research. The blooming periods of phytoplankton algae studied, fluctuated from year-to-year, but diatom blooms increased in length in the late 1970s. Dinoflagellates decreased in cell numbers in the same period. The observation of highest cell numbers of some diatoms and dinoflagellates in the lower salinity near coastal waters can be explained by eutrophication effects.  相似文献

Analysis of the Italian Dutch Elm Disease Fungal Population   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Sixty‐two Ophiostoma ulmi sensu lato strains have been collected from symptomatic trees in seven areas of Central Italy. Isolates were compared with 10 reference strains, belonging to the species O. ulmi and to the two subspecies of O. novo‐ulmi, in order to establish the genetic variability within the Italian population of this fungal pathogen. The structure of the population has been analysed by means of morpho‐physiological features and of the direct amplification of minisatellite‐region DNA polymerase chain reaction (DAMD‐PCR) by using the M13 core sequence. The DNA profiles have been compared with taxonomic parameters (growth rate, culture aspect and fertility barriers). Taxa could thus be well separated. None of the isolates collected was recognized as O. ulmi. Isolates assigned to the two subspecies of O. novo‐ulmi (novo ulmi and americana) by means of the fertility test, showed short genetic distances with the respective reference strains and they constituted subgroups according to their geographical origin. The high level of variation detected indicates a postepidemic situation in Italy. Some inconsistency was found within the subspecies clusters. Several isolates, assigned to subspecies americana using fertility test, were in the novo‐ulmi cluster and vice versa. A possible explanation is that these isolates are americana–novo‐ulmi hybrids.  相似文献

Background

In order to extract meaningful information from electronic medical records, such as signs and symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments, it is important to take into account the contextual properties of the identified information: negation, temporality, and experiencer. Most work on automatic identification of these contextual properties has been done on English clinical text. This study presents ContextD, an adaptation of the English ConText algorithm to the Dutch language, and a Dutch clinical corpus.We created a Dutch clinical corpus containing four types of anonymized clinical documents: entries from general practitioners, specialists’ letters, radiology reports, and discharge letters. Using a Dutch list of medical terms extracted from the Unified Medical Language System, we identified medical terms in the corpus with exact matching. The identified terms were annotated for negation, temporality, and experiencer properties. To adapt the ConText algorithm, we translated English trigger terms to Dutch and added several general and document specific enhancements, such as negation rules for general practitioners’ entries and a regular expression based temporality module.

Results

The ContextD algorithm utilized 41 unique triggers to identify the contextual properties in the clinical corpus. For the negation property, the algorithm obtained an F-score from 87% to 93% for the different document types. For the experiencer property, the F-score was 99% to 100%. For the historical and hypothetical values of the temporality property, F-scores ranged from 26% to 54% and from 13% to 44%, respectively.

Conclusions

The ContextD showed good performance in identifying negation and experiencer property values across all Dutch clinical document types. Accurate identification of the temporality property proved to be difficult and requires further work. The anonymized and annotated Dutch clinical corpus can serve as a useful resource for further algorithm development.

Treatment of Dutch iris (Iris × hollandica Hoog. cv. Sapphire Beauty) bulbs with ethylene prior to precooling stimulated flowering in bulbs of various sizes. In large sized bulbs exposure to ethylene followed by precooling resulted in 100% flowering over a five months period after planting. Flowering in control bulbs which were not treated with ethylene prior to precooling was limited to 67% during the same five months period. In medium sized bulbs flowering in the ethylene treatment was 90% compared to 75% in the control. However, the biggest stimulation of flowering by ethylene was found in small sized bulbs (from 16 to 56%). Application of octanoic acid for a short time period prior to exposure to ethylene stimulated flowering in all bulb sizes. After five months the final percentage flowering in large and medium sized bulbs of the octanoic acid plus ethylene treatment did not differ from that of the ethylene only treatment. However, the initial rate of flowering was higher in the former treatment. In small bulbs the percentage flowering was much higher in the octanoic acid plus ethylene treatment than in the ethylene only treatment. The results of this study indicate that, just as in certain flowers, fruit and seeds, treatment with octanoic acid stimulates ethylene sensitivity in Dutch iris bulbs. The sensitivity of untreated bulbs to ethylene was highest in large bulbs and lowest in small bulbs. This correlated well with the endogenous octanoic acid content of the bulbs. Octanoic acid levels were highest in large bulbs and lowest in small Bulbs. It appears that the endogenous levels of octanoic acid in the bulbs is determined prior to the onset of dormancy.  相似文献

Due to the rise of environmental concern ecologists have been asked for advice more frequently since the late 1960s. This article discusses how the changing relationship between ecologists and society has affected the behaviour of one particular group of ecologists, namely Dutch fresh water ecologists, by focussing on their behaviour towards job market control and public interest activities. The analysis has been based on interviews with 65 Dutch fresh water ecologists together with an analysis of their publications.In contrast with American ecologists, Dutch fresh water ecologists have made little effort to control their job market by formal arrangements such as formulating a code of ethics and certification procedures. Secondly, Dutch fresh water ecologists generally conceive of their own role in contributing to the solution of environmental problems in relation to that of the environmentalists by doing good research and reliable advisory work. Although a significant number of researchers also address lay publics by writing popular articles and/or holding lectures, only a minority actively participates in environmental politics.  相似文献

Understanding the complex origin of domesticated populations is of vital importance for understanding, preserving and exploiting breed genetic diversity. Here, we aim to assess Asian contributions to European traditional breeds and western commercial chickens for mitochondrial genetic diversity. To this end, a 365‐bp fragment of the chicken mtDNA D‐loop region of 16 Dutch fancy breeds (113 individuals) was surveyed, comprising almost the entire breed diversity of The Netherlands. We also sequenced the same fragment for 160 commercial birds representing all important commercial types from multiple commercial companies that together represent more than 50% of the worldwide commercial value. We identified 20 different haplotypes. The haplotypes clustered into five clades. The commonest clade (E‐clade) supposedly originates from the Indian subcontinent. In addition, both in commercial chicken and Dutch fancy breeds, many haplotypes were found with a clear East Asian origin. However, the erratic occurrence of many different East Asian mitochondrial clades indicates that there were many independent instances where breeders used imported exotic chickens for enhancing local breeds. Nucleotide diversity and haplotype diversity analyses showed the influence of the introgression of East Asian chicken on genetic diversity. All populations that had haplotypes of multiple origin displayed high inferred diversity, as opposed to most populations that had only a single mitochondrial haplotype signature. Most fancy breeds were found to have a much lower within‐population diversity compared to broilers and layers, although this is not the case for mitochondrial estimates in fancy breeds that have multiple origin haplotypes.  相似文献

For much of its colonial history, the Netherlands experienced little contact with its island possessions in the Caribbean. Subsequent Dutch policy was formulated in the shadow of the Netherlands primary concern with its prosperous colony of Indonesia. The 1985 closing of the oil refineries in Aruba and Curacao, Netherlands Antilles and Aruba’s “status aparte” in 1986 triggered a mass migration from those Dutch “overseas countries” to the Netherlands. These recent migrations of thousands of Dutch post-colonial citizens have added to the Dutch reevaluation of its colonial past and debates about its multicultural democratic future.  相似文献

Some types of actinomycetes produce many different secondary metabolites of fatty acids, hydrocarbons, or other compounds. Many of these products play an important role in various medical fields. This study aims to extract natural compounds from actinomycetes after their isolation from the soil and their identification as antimicrobials. Soil samples were collected from different regions after being treated by known methods. Colonies that indicate actinomycetes were replanted and provided with suitable conditions for growth, and then tested against a number of pathogenic microbes. Isolate 3-D is more effective than others. D-3 was exposed to ultraviolet rays for greater production of antimicrobials. The compounds obtained from the isolates were extracted by the column chromatography technique. To identify the compounds resulting from the extract, the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS) technique was used. Ten compounds have been identified by GC–MS. Some of the compounds are of fatty acid nature, and some are hydrocarbons. These compound includes Hexadecane, 2,6,11,15- Tetramethyl – Octacosane - Dodecanoic Acid, 1,2,3- Propane-triyl ester – Hexatriacontane – Heptacosane - Eicosyl Acetate – Tritetracontane - Tetracosane, 2,6,10,15,19,23-Hexamethyl - Myristic Acid vinyl ester – Tetratetracontane. All of these extracts are of medical importance. Some of them are anti-bacterial, some are anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-fungal, antioxidants, and some of them are essential ingredients in cosmetics. The current study showed that isolated D-3 actinomycetes from soil have the ability to produce antimicrobials against a variety of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, which are important in the medical field.  相似文献

Sleep deprivation impairs spatial learning in the rat. Sleep deprivation, however, also causes stress and stress itself can interfere with spatial learning. To address this confound, sleep deprivation effects on Morris water maze training were studied in intact rats and in rats in which the adrenal stress response had been eliminated by adrenalectomy. Stable, physiological levels of corticosterone were maintained in adrenalectomized rats with an implanted pellet. Training occurred 6-7 days after surgery. Seventy-two hours sleep deprivation by the platform-over-water method just prior to training slowed, but did not block, learning. In particular, the robust savings between trials 1 and 2 of the first set found in home cage rats was not present in sleep-deprived rats. Adrenalectomy/corticosterone replacement surgery did not modify the effect of sleep deprivation on acquisition rate, demonstrating that the deficits in spatial task acquisition due to pre-training sleep deprivation are not secondary to the adrenal stress response.  相似文献

Sixteen rats received eight 1-h sessions of a tandem fixed-ratio 1 differential-reinforcement-of-other-behavior 30-s schedule with reinforcer magnitude at one or six food pellet(s) across groups of eight rats. The larger reinforcer magnitude established the lever press more effectively. First, mean schedule completions differed across groups, in terms of both their overall difference and in their increase across sessions. Second, whereas the larger reinforcer magnitude established reliable response acquisition in all eight rats by the end of the experiment, the smaller reinforcer magnitude only established reliable response acquisition in four of eight rats. The present results systematically replicate earlier findings obtaining more reliable response acquisition with unsignaled delayed reinforcement with greater food deprivation. Taken together, this work demonstrates the influence of motivational variables on response acquisition with unsignaled delayed reinforcement.  相似文献

Cerato-ulmin, a toxin produced by Ceratocystis ulmi, the causal agent of Dutch elm disease, has been characterized as a small protein (128 residues) with a MW of ca 13000. The protein has a high content of cystine, proline, leucine, serine and aspartic acid/asparagine; it is low in histidine, lysine, arginine, isoleucine, phenylalanine and tyrosine and does not contain cysteine, methionine, or tryptophan. The amino acid sequence of the N-terminal region is: H2N-Ala-Asp-Ser-Tyr-Asp-Pro-Cys-Thr-Gly-Leu-Leu-Gln-Lys-Ser-Pro-Gln-Cys-Cys-Asp-Thr-Asp-Ile-Leu-Gly-Val-Ser-Asp-Leu-Asp-Cys-. BackgroundThe rates and routes of Helicobacter pylori transmission, in a high-prevalent country like Iran, with gastric cancer as the leading cause of male cancer mortality, are of great essence. Here, we have studied the H. pylori-associated risk factors and the likelihood of interspousal transmission.MethodsIn a cohort of 686 young prewed couples, questionnaires were self-administered and serum samples were collected, for assessment of risk factors and H. pylori serostatus, at baseline and follow-up. Of the 475 H. pylori single- or double-seronegative couples, 201 returned for follow-up. The average follow-up duration was 2.2 (SD 0.6) years, with a total of 560.1 person-years. Logistic regression and Cox regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and hazard ratios (HRs).ResultsThe risk of infection was higher in men than women (OR: 1.3, 95% CI: 1.0–1.8) and among metropolitan than rural residents (OR = 1.4, 95% CI: 1.1–1.9). It was also significantly higher among those with three (OR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.1–2.2), and four or more siblings (OR = 1.4, 95% CI: 1.0–1.9), in reference to those with one or no siblings. Adult H. pylori acquisition occurred in 10.9% (27/247) of the seronegative participants. The risk of the acquisition was significantly associated with age (P value for trend=0,000). It was also significantly lower among participants who had various degrees of education as compared to illiterate subjects (HR = 0.2, 95% CI: 0.1–0.9). Nevertheless, our analysis did not find any evidence for interspousal transmission (HR = 1.0, 95% CI: 0.4–2.2).ConclusionWhilst H. pylori acquisition was detected in the young adult Iranian population, our findings did not support interspousal transmission, as a mode of acquisition.  相似文献

Previous work has shown neurochemical and behavioral differences between Lewis rats and Fischer 344 rats. Some of this work suggests that there might be differential sensitivity to delayed reinforcement between the two strains. To further explore this possibility, Lewis (n=8) and Fischer 344 (n=8) rats were exposed to a response-acquisition task with a non-resetting 20s delay to reinforcement. A tandem fixed-ratio 1, fixed-time 20s schedule of reinforcement was programmed for one of two levers; presses on the alternate lever had no programmed consequences. A greater number of Lewis rats (5/8) acquired lever pressing compared to the Fischer 344 rats (2/8). Future work with these strains may lead to a better understanding of the genetic and/or neurochemical factors involved in temporal control of behavior.  相似文献

Background

Asymptomatic severe mitral valve (MV) regurgitation with preserved left ventricular function is a challenging clinical entity as data on the recommended treatment strategy for these patients are scarce and conflicting. For asymptomatic patients, no randomised trial has been performed for objectivising the best treatment strategy.

Methods

The Dutch AMR (Asymptomatic Mitral Regurgitation) trial is a multicenter, prospective, randomised trial comparing early MV repair versus watchful waiting in asymptomatic patients with severe organic MV regurgitation. A total of 250 asymptomatic patients (18–70 years) with preserved left ventricular function will be included. Intervention will be either watchful waiting or MV surgery. Follow-up will be 5 years. Primary outcome measures are all-cause mortality and a composite endpoint of cardiovascular mortality, congestive heart failure, and hospitalisation for non-fatal cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Secondary outcome measures are total costs, cost-effectiveness, quality of life, echocardiographic and cardiac magnetic resonance parameters, exercise tests, asymptomatic atrial fibrillation and brain natriuretic peptide levels. Additionally, the complication rate in the surgery group and rate of surgery in the watchful waiting group will be determined.

Implications

The Dutch AMR trial will be the first multicenter randomised trial on this topic. We anticipate that the results of this study are highly needed to elucidate the best treatment strategy and that this may prove to be an international landmark study.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Changes occurring in the macromolecular traits of cell wall components in elm wood following attack by Ophiostoma novo-ulmi, the causative agent of Dutch elm disease (DED), are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to compare host responses and the metabolic profiles of wood components for two Dutch elm (Ulmus) hybrids, ‘Groeneveld’ (a susceptible clone) and ‘Dodoens’ (a tolerant clone), that have contrasting survival strategies upon infection with the current prevalent strain of DED.

Methods

Ten-year-old plants of the hybrid elms were inoculated with O. novo-ulmi ssp. americana × novo-ulmi. Measurements were made of the content of main cell wall components and extractives, lignin monomer composition, macromolecular traits of cellulose and neutral saccharide composition.

Key Results

Upon infection, medium molecular weight macromolecules of cellulose were degraded in both the susceptible and tolerant elm hybrids, resulting in the occurrence of secondary cell wall ruptures and cracks in the vessels, but rarely in the fibres. The 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra revealed that loss of crystalline and non-crystalline cellulose regions occurred in parallel. The rate of cellulose degradation was influenced by the syringyl:guaiacyl ratio in lignin. Both hybrids commonly responded to the medium molecular weight cellulose degradation with the biosynthesis of high molecular weight macromolecules of cellulose, resulting in a significant increase in values for the degree of polymerization and polydispersity. Other responses of the hybrids included an increase in lignin content, a decrease in relative proportions of d-glucose, and an increase in proportions of d-xylose. Differential responses between the hybrids were found in the syringyl:guaiacyl ratio in lignin.

Conclusions

In susceptible ‘Groeneveld’ plants, syringyl-rich lignin provided a far greater degree of protection from cellulose degradation than in ‘Dodoens’, but only guaiacyl-rich lignin in ‘Dodoens’ plants was involved in successful defence against the fungus. This finding was confirmed by the associations of vanillin and vanillic acid with the DED-tolerant ‘Dodoens’ plants in a multivariate analysis of wood traits.  相似文献
