In vitro activity of milk leukocytes (viz. neutrophils, lymphocytes and macrophages) was evaluated in forty-eight (48) clinically healthy high-yielding cross-bred cows of mid-lactation stage (100–200 days of lactation), divided into four groups namely 1st parity (n = 12), 2nd parity (n = 12), 3rd parity (n = 12) and 4th and above parity (n = 12). Milk samples were taken (250 ml/cow) were taken. Milk somatic cell counts (SCC) and differential leukocyte counts (DLC) were performed microscopically. In vitro phagocytic index (PI) of milk neutrophils and macrophages was evaluated by colorimetric nitro blue tetrazolium reductive assay. Mitogen-induced milk lymphocyte blastogenic response was measured by colorimetric MTT (tetrazolium) assay after isolation of the milk leukocytes by density gradient centrifugation. Milk SCC differed significantly (p < 0.01) between different parity. Cows of 4 and above parity showed significantly (p < 0.01) higher milk SCC compared to primiparous cows. There was no significant difference in milk DLC during different parities in high-yielding cross-bred cows. There was a significant (p < 0.01) variation in lymphocyte blastogenesis amongst parity. The highest value of lymphocyte blastogenesis was seen at 3rd parity, whereas lowest value was obtained in the cows of both 1st and 4th or above parity. PI of milk neutrophils did not differ significantly between parity. PI of milk macrophages was significantly (p < 0.01) higher in 3rd parity and lower (p < 0.01) in 1st and 4th parities. The study indicated that depressed activity of milk lymphocytes and macropages was lower and SCC was higher in the cows of 4th and above parity indicating more mammary stress and hence susceptible to udder infection and mastitis. Therefore, better care and managemental interventions should be taken around these periods.  相似文献

Therapeutic hoof blocks have been recommended for treatment of sole ulcers in dairy cattle; however, they are underutilized in the industry. Twenty Holstein cows were randomly assigned to receive a wooden hoof block applied to the left hind leg (n = 5), to the right hind leg (n = 5), or no hoof blocks (n = 10). Accelerometers were affixed to both hind legs of 10 blocked cows and 5 control cows. Cows were observed for locomotion scores, and milk production was recorded. Mixed models were constructed to determine effects of block application on behavior, milk production, and locomotion. Activity was altered by day, with cows being most active on Day ? 1. The mean number of daily lying bouts and lying bout duration did not differ by treatment. Locomotion scores were higher for blocked cows on Days 1, 2, and 3 compared with baseline; however, milk production did not differ between treatments. In conclusion, although block application affected the appearance of locomotion, it did not appear to adversely affect the behavior or milk production of sound dairy cows.  相似文献

Immunity of mammary gland in terms of in vitro activity of milk leukocytes has been evaluated during hot-humid, summer, and winter season in elite (n = 10) and non-elite (n = 10) crossbred cows. Milk samples were collected from all the cows throughout the year at 15-day interval. Milk somatic cell counts (SCC) and differential leukocyte counts (DLC) were evaluated microscopically. Milk neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes were isolated and cultured in vitro. In vitro PI of milk neutrophils and macrophages was evaluated by colorimetric NBT (nitro-blue tetrazolium) reductive assay. Mitogen-induced milk lymphocyte blastogenic response was measured by colorimetric MTT (thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide) assay. Milk SCC was found to be significantly (p < 0.01) higher in elite cows compared to non-elite cows irrespective of season. There was significant (p < 0.05) increase in milk SCC during hot-humid season compared to winter season in both the group of the cows. There was no significant difference between group and season in terms of DLC. In vitro phagocytic index of elite cows was significantly (p < 0.01) higher than non-elite cows. The phagocytic index was significantly (p < 0.01) decreased in summer and hot-humid season compared to winter season in both the group of animals. Macrophages isolated from elite cows having significantly (p < 0.01) lower phagocytic index than non-elite cows which significantly (p < 0.01) decreased during summer and hot-humid season compared to winter. In vitro milk lymphocyte proliferative response was significantly (p < 0.01) lower in elite cows. Activity of B-lymphocytes decreased significantly (p < 0.01) during summer and hot-humid season than winter, but activity of T-lymphocytes remains unaltered during different seasons. In conclusion, the mammary immunity in terms of in vitro activity of milk leukocytes is compromised during summer and hot-humid season in elite crossbred cows; therefore, better care and management should be taken in high-yielding cows during summer and hot-humid season to minimize intramammary infections.  相似文献

The teat skin of cows was scored (1: smooth as silk; 2: smooth; 3: slightly rough; 4: rough; 5: cracked; and 6: sores) by trained technicians who moved their fingers down the barrel of the teat with a light touch. Technicians ranked the same population of teats in the same rank order, but their mean values differed by half a score which probably could be related to the skin condition of their own fingers. Half udder experiments were carried out for 6 months at 4 farms with 35 to 52 cows each. A postmilking teat spray with 10% glycerol improved teat skin condition (p<0.10) compared with no teat spray. A postmilking teat spray with 120 ppm chlorine dioxide did not influence teat skin condition compared with no teat spray. No differences in udder health could be proven between treatments. Control studies revealed that 10% glycerol as an emollient of a postmilking teat spray improved teat skin condition within 3 weeks from being slightly rough to being smooth for lactating cows (p<0.05) but not for dry cows having smooth teat skin. Neither glycerol nor chlorine dioxide influenced absolute number of bacteria on teat skin after a challenge with Streptococcus uberis and Staphylococcus aureus but half life of S. aureus on unsprayed teats was longest (p = 0.05). Suckling made teat skin more rough than machine milking. Nevertheless, suckling lowered the number of esculin positive bacteria on the teat skin. We concluded that the condition of healthy teat skin (scores 1–4) has no influence on bacterial colonisation in the absence of cracks and sores (scores 5–6).  相似文献

Comparison of bacterial counts (BCs) among common bedding types used for dairy cows, including straw, is needed. There is concern that the microbial content of organic bedding is elevated and presents risks for dairy cow udder health and milk quality. The objectives of this study were to investigate: (1) % DM and BCs (Streptococcus spp., all gram-negatives and specifically Klebsiella spp.) in different types of bedding sampled, and to investigate housing and farm management factors associated with % DM and BCs; (2) if bedding type was associated with hygiene of cow body parts (lower-legs, udder, upper-legs and flank) and housing and management factors associated with hygiene and (3) bedding types associated with higher BCs in cow milk at the farm level and bulk tank milk and management factors that were associated with highest BCs. Seventy farms (44 free-stall and 26 tie-stall) in Ontario, Canada were visited 3 times, 7 days apart from October 2014 to February 2015. At each visit, composite samples of unused and used bedding were collected for % DM determination and bacterial culture. Used bedding samples were collected from the back third of selected stalls. Data were analyzed using multivariable linear mixed models. Bedding classification for each farm were: new sand (n = 12), straw and other dry forage (n = 33), wood products (shavings, sawdust; n = 17) and recycled manure solids (RMSs)-compost, digestate (n = 8). In used bedding, across all bedding samples, sand was driest, compared to straw and wood, and RMS; higher % DM was associated with lower Streptococcus spp. count. Streptococcus spp. and all Gram-negative bacteria counts increased with increasing days since additional bedding was added. Gram-negative bacteria counts in used bedding varied with type: RMS = 16.3 ln colony-forming units (cfu)/mL, straw = 13.8 ln cfu/mL, new sand = 13.5 ln cfu/mL, and wood = 10.3 ln cfu/mL. Klebsiella spp. counts in used bedding were lower for wood products (5.9 ln cfu/mL) compared to all other bedding types. Mean cow SCC tended to be higher on farms with narrower stalls. Farms with mattress-based stalls had a higher prevalence of cows with dirty udders compared to those using a deep bedding system (often inorganic sand). Wider stalls were associated with lower bulk milk bacteria count. Lower % DM of used bedding was associated with higher bulk milk bacteria count. In conclusion, bedding management may have a profound impact on milk quality, bacterial concentrations in the bedding substrates, and cow hygiene.  相似文献

Behavioural and cardiac responses of multiparous dairy cows (n=24) during milking in a 2×4 stall herringbone milking system were evaluated in this study. Heart rate (HR), parasympathetic tone index (high frequency component, HF) of heart rate variability and sympathovagal balance indicator LF/HF ratio (the ratio of the low frequency (LF) and the HF component) were analysed. Measurement periods were established as follows: (1) standing calm (baseline), (2) udder preparation, (3) milking, (4) waiting after milking in the milking stall and (5) in the night (2 h after milking). Step behaviour was recorded and calculated per minute for the three phases of the milking process (udder preparation, milking and waiting after milking). HR was higher during udder preparation and milking compared with baseline (P=0.03, 0.027, respectively). HF was significantly lower than baseline levels during waiting in the milking stall after milking (P=0.009), however, during udder preparation, milking and 2 h after milking did not differ from baseline (P>0.05, in either case). LF/HF during the three phases of the milking process differed neither from baseline levels nor from each other. Steps occurred more often during waiting after milking than during udder preparation (P=0.042) or during milking (23; P=0.017). Our results suggest that the milking procedure itself was not stressful for these animals. After milking (following the removal of the last teat cup and before leaving the milking stall), both decreased parasympathetic tone (lower HF) and increased stepping rate indicated a sensitive period for animals during this phase.  相似文献

A mammary somatosensory mask was employed in suckled anestrous beef cows to attenuate signals that were hypothesized to play a direct regulatory role in postpartum anestrus. Cows (n = 20) were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups on Days 15 to 20 postcalving. The three treatments were: 1) masked (n = 7); 2) suckled (negative control, n = 6); and 3) weaned (positive control, n = 7). Four layers of surgical glove latex were used to cover the teats and ventro-lateral prominence of the udder of masked cows with a nonhardening, nontoxic adhesive (Day 0). Masks were designed to prevent direct contact between the skin of the teat/udder and the mouth of the calf and to allow normal suckling and milk removal. Masks were left in place for 7 d, with calves in the weaned group removed to a remote location for 7 d. Calves in the suckled group were allowed ad libitum suckling. Calves in the masked group tended (P < 0.1) to suckle longer than calves in the suckled control group (11.3 +/- 1.3 vs. 7.8 +/- 1.3 min/suckle) posttreatment; however, suckling frequency and calf weight gains did not differ due to treatment. Weaned cows exhibited a four-fold increase (P < 0.01) in the frequency of luteinizing hormone (LH) pulses on Day 2 relative to suckled and masked cows. The percentage of animals ovulating within 12 d after treatment differed (P < 0.05) and was 100, 50 and 0% for weaned, suckled and masked cows, respectively. Presence of the latex mask allowed essentially normal suckling and lactation, but failed to attenuate (and may have potentiated) the negative effects of suckling on secretory patterns of LH, ovulation and estrus.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of milking frequency and nutritional level on some aspects of animal health. Holstein-Friesian cows (n = 60) were assigned post calving to a factorial arrangement of treatments; twice a day (TAD) milking on a high or low nutritional level; once a day (OAD) milking on a high or low nutritional level. Milking characteristics were recorded daily. Blood samples to evaluate changes in the composition of the blood cells, milk leakage, udder tension and locomotory ability were measured on four occasions. Teat-ends were classified for hyperkeratosis (HK) monthly post partum. TAD had longer daily milking times (P < 0.001) compared with OAD cows. There was no effect of milking frequency or nutritional level on morning milking time, time to milk letdown or peak milk flow rate (P>0.05). High nutritional level cows had higher average flow-rates (P < 0.05) than low nutritional level cows. Neither milking frequency nor nutritional level affected HK (P>0.05). However, HK values were positively correlated with daily milking time for OAD cows for 6 months of lactation (P < 0.05). This correlation was significant (P < 0.01) for cows milked OAD on high nutrition during the peak lactation period. OAD cows had higher levels of milk leakage compared with TAD cows during the month of May (P < 0.01). Cows on high nutrition milked OAD showed higher udder firmness scores than cows milked once or twice daily at the low nutrition level in June and July (P < 0.05). OAD cows had higher locomotion scores compared with TAD cows (P < 0.001). Locomotion and udder firmness scores were significantly correlated for OAD in June (P < 0.05). OAD cows had lower blood lymphocyte counts, numerically higher counts of neutrophil and a higher monocyte count at peak lactation compared with TAD cows suggesting that OAD cows had altered immune responses. The increase in milk leakage, higher udder firmness and locomotion scores in conjunction with changes in blood cells, suggests that OAD milking may have caused some discomfort to the cows during peak lactation. A reduction in the concentrate input to OAD cows during this period could ameliorate this problem.  相似文献

In the present study the relationships between five body structural and nine udder morphological traits with milk yield and non-yield traits, i.e. milk contents, somatic cell count and body weight in n = 171 Frizarta ewes were investigated. Positive correlations of moderate to high magnitude were observed among body measurements ranging from 0.25 (body length-chest width) to 0.61 (chest width-chest girth). High correlations were observed between udder width and udder circumference (r = 0.69) as well as between udder circumference at base and middle (r = 0.62). Udder height was found to be positively correlated with cistern depth (r = 0.32), udder width (r = 0.40) and udder circumference (r = 0.42) as well as with teat measurements (0.19 and 0.25 with teat length and teat circumference, respectively). Cistern depth was positively and highly correlated with teat angle (r = 0.64). The correlation between teat length and circumference was also high (r = 0.57). Teat angle was found to be negatively correlated with teat measurements (r = −0.39 and −0.23 for teat length and teat circumference, respectively). Principal components analysis revealed four components that jointly explained 67% of the variance of all the body and the udder morphological traits. The first principal component interpreted as the body dimensions was found to be associated with body weight of ewes. The second component interpreted as global and rear measurements of the udder was significant for milk yield traits. The third and fourth principal components were interpreted as the udder type and teat dimensions, respectively. Ewes’ body weight could be adequately predicted by chest girth, body length, chest width and withers height. Test day milk yields were found to be associated with udder circumference and udder width as well as with udder height and teat length. None of the udder measurements and/or teat characteristics was found to be correlated with milk content(s) and/or somatic cell count. New statistical techniques can be successfully implemented in investigation of relationships between various traits in dairy sheep.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine an influence of udder infection on milk chloride level and on milk productivity of cows of black and white race. Bacteriological analysis was performed by bacterial isolation from milk collected in sterile conditions from single lobes of mammary gland. The study was aimed to detect the following bacteria: Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Actinomyces pyogenes, Enterobacteriaceae rods, Corynebacterium bovis, and Micrococcus sp. Milk chloride level was determined by burette method in 1250 milk samples collected from entire udder. Milk productivity was determined on the day of bacterial isolation. Statistical analysis of the results of the study on udder infection, milk chloride level, and milk productivity of mammary gland did reveal lack of a simple correlations between those parameters and in the indirect manner indicated an influence of inappropriate maintenance conditions of tested cows on the health condition of their udder. It seems possible that alkalosis and acidosis in cows, taken into consideration in discussion section, could constitute a factor influencing the frequency of mastitis incidence.  相似文献

Holstein cows were fed total mixed rations (TMR) supplemented with protected palm fat (PPF), whole sunflower seed (WSS) or extruded linseed (ELS) for 100 days. Percentage of dietary crude fat was 5.3, 5.1 and 5.1, respectively. Diet had no (p > 0.05) effect on feed intake, milk yield or milk protein content. Percentage of milk fat and yield of fat – corrected milk were significantly increased when diets were supplemented with WSS and ELS. Feeding PPF resulted in the lowest (p < 0.05) ruminal concentration of volatile fatty acids. No significant dietary effect on plasma characteristics was observed. Concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was higher (p < 0.05), and PUFA n-6/n-3 ratio lower (p < 0.05), in the milk fat from cows fed ELS compared to WSS. Supplementation of TMR with oilseeds compared to PPF increased the content of CLA in milk fat (p < 0.005) and decreased its atherogenicity, primarily due to a significant reduction of palmitic acid concentration. Both oilseeds significantly improved the spreadability index of manufactured butter. ELS, but not WSS, increased the susceptibility of milk fat to oxidation (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that feeding of oilseeds to dairy cows improved nutritional quality of milk fat, with supplementation with ELS producing an even more desirable milk fatty acid profile than WSS supplementation.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of adding protected palmitic acid (PA) to the ration of grazing dairy cows supplemented with protected conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on milk production, chemical composition and fat profile. Six cows were used, 3/4 American Swiss × Zebu, under a rotational grazing system in a mixed sward with Cynodon plectostachyus, Brachiaria decumbens and Brachiaria brizantha. Furthermore, each cow received daily 4 kg concentrates and 8 kg sorghum silage, which made up the basal diet. The cows were distributed into three two-cow groups. Three treatments were randomly assigned to the groups, using a cross design: (1) control (basal diet), (2) basal diet + CLA (50 g/d) and (3) basal diet + CLA (50 g/d) + PA (412 g/d). The following variables were evaluated: forage intake, milk production, protein, fat and lactose concentration in milk, and milk fatty acid (FA) profile. There were no differences in forage intake between treatments; however, there were differences in milk production, protein, fat and lactose yield and fat concentration, which increased significantly in group CLA + PA when compared with group CLA. The concentration of FA synthesised de novo was lower when PA was included in the diet. Adding PA to the diet of grazing cows mitigates the milk fat decline caused by including trans-10, cis-12 CLA in the diet.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine if chronic electrical or thermal stimulation of sensory neurons on the surface of the teat is able to activate pathways that suppress the weaning-induced increase in luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in beef cows. Treatment groups (n = 5 per group) consisted of: 1) control suckled (CS); 2) weaned plus electrical stimulation of the teat (ESTT); 3) weaned plus electrical stimulation of the tail (ESTL); 4) weaned plus thermal stimulation of the teat (TTT); 5) weaned plus thermal stimulation of the tail (TTL) and 6) weaned (WN). Cows were ovariectomized on Day 5 post partum (PP) and were treated with estradiol-17beta to maintain a constant tonic baseline. Beginning on Days 17 to 21 post partum, cows were suckled by their own calf (control), weaned or weaned and electrically or thermally stimulated for 10 minutes every 6 hours for 4 days. Chronic transcutaneous electrical and thermal stimulation of the teat or tail failed to impede the unambiguous rise (P < 0.001) in LH pulse frequency and amplitude following weaning. Positive and negative feedback of estradiol on LH secretion was not affected by treatments. Relatively consistent episodes of oxytocin and prolactin release were observed following control-suckling, but responses to electrical and thermal stimulation were inconsistent. Chronic electrical or thermal stimulation of teat-specific or nonspecific loci did not attenuate heightened secretion of LH after weaning. The results are further evidence against a role for mammary somatosensory neurons in the suckling-mediated inhibition of LH secretion.  相似文献

Heat stress generates a significant economic impact for the dairy industry in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, so that heat abatement is an important issue for dairy producers. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of two short-term cooling periods on physiological and productive status of lactating Holstein cows during hot ambient temperatures. Thirty-nine multiparous cows were blocked by milk yield and assigned to one of three treatments including: control group (C), cows cooled before milking time (0500 and 1700 h daily, 1 h cooling); AM group, cows cooled at 1000 h and before milking (2 h cooling); and AM?+?PM group, cows cooled at 1100, 1500 and 2200 h, as well as before milking (4 h cooling). Alterations in the milk constituents throughout the lactation cycle have been studied in 20 Karan-Fries cross-bred cows (Holstein Fresian x Tharparkar) divided into two groups, viz. elite (n = 10) and non-elite (n = 10). About 100 ml of composite milk samples (from all the quarters) were collected through hand milking in sterile tubes from the day of calving at 15-day interval till 300 days of lactation cycle. Different milk constituents (viz. fat, protein, lactose, Solid not fat) were estimated by automatic milk analyzer. The daily milk yield varied significantly (p < 0.01) between group and different days of lactation cycle. Milk fat percentage of milk did not differ significantly between groups and different days of lactation cycle. Milk protein and lactose percentage did not differ significantly between groups but differed significantly (p < 0.001) between days. Solid not fat (SNF) percentage of milk was significantly (p < 0.01) higher in elite cows compared to non-elite cows and also varied significantly (p < 0.05) during different days of lactation cycle. In both the group of cows, milk protein, fat, and SNF percentage was highest and lactose percentage was lowest up to 1st week of lactation cycle and rapidly declined thereafter due to the transition of the colostrum into milk. After 2nd week of lactation, all the milk constituents under study were almost remained unaltered till the end of the cycle. The above stated investigation not only substantiates the already existing information of lactation stage-specific alteration in milk constituents but also depict the exact point of transition of these constituents during the lactation cycle so the nutritional and managemental interventions could be carried out in proper time.  相似文献

Much emphasis has been put on evaluating alterations in milk composition caused by clinical and subclinical mastitis. However, little is known about changes in milk composition during subclinical mastitis in individual udder quarters with a low-to-moderate increase in milk somatic cell count (SCC). This information is needed to decide whether milk from individual udder quarters with a moderate-to-high increase in milk SCC should be separated or not. The aim of this study was to determine how milk composition in separate udder quarters is affected when cow composite milk has low or moderately increased SCC levels. Udder quarter and cow composite milk samples were collected from 17 cows on one occasion. Milk yield was registered and samples were analyzed for SCC, fat, total protein, whey proteins, lactose, citric acid, non-protein nitrogen (NPN), lactoferrin, protein profile, free fatty acids (FFAs), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), proteolysis, sodium and potassium. Bacteriological samples were collected twice from all four quarters of all cows. The cows were divided into three groups depending on their SCC at udder quarter level. The first group comprised healthy cows with four udder quarters with low SCC, <50 000 cells/ml; composition was equal when opposite rear and front quarters were compared. In the second and the third groups, cows had one udder quarter with 101 000 cells/ml < SCC < 600 000 cells/ml and SCC > 700 000 cells/ml, respectively. The remaining udder quarters of these cows had low SCC (<100 000 cells/ml). Despite the relatively low average cow composite SCC = 100 000 cells/ml of Group 2, milk from affected udder quarters exhibited lower casein number, content of lactose and β-casein (β-CN), while the content of whey protein, sodium, LDH and α-lactoalbumin (α-la) were higher compared to healthy opposite quarters. In addition to these changes, milk from affected udder quarters in Group 3 also exhibited lower values of potassium and αs1-casein (αs1-CN) and higher values of lactoferrin when compared to milk from opposite healthy quarters. This indicates that even when the SCC in cow composite milk is low, there might exist individual quarters for which milk composition is changed and milk quality impaired.  相似文献

The effects of stall length, manure system, type of bedding and calving disorders on incidence rates of tramped teats, udder injuries, and clinical mastitis in Swedish Red and White tied cows, as well as interrelationships between these 3 disorders were investigated. Data used consisted of 370 herds, for a total of 45,133 cow records. Cows in herds with liquid manure system were at hihger risk of udder injuries and mastitis than in herds with solid system. Lower risk of both udder injuries and mastitis was found for cows in herds with short stall size (< 180 cm) compared to herds with stalls of 205–219 cm length. It was suggested that other factors, such as slipperiness of the stall floor and presence and type of feeding barrier, must be considered when the effect of stall characteristics on tramped teats is investigated. In farms with solid manure system cut straw or sawdust bedding increased the risk of tramped teats and mastitis relative to uncut straw. Parity and calving disorders were important risk factors for udder health and their effect was greater in herds with liquid manure system. Tramped teats and udder injuries were the most serious risk factors for clinical mastitis.  相似文献

Raw milk samples were collected from 200 dairy cows belonging to Girolando 1/2, Gyr, Guzera, and Holstein breeds, and the bacterial diversity was explored using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. SCC analysis showed that 69 animals were classified as affected with subclinical mastitis. The milk bacterial microbiome was dominated by Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria, with an increase of Firmicutes in animals with subclinical mastitis and Proteobacteria in healthy animals. At the family and genus level, the milk bacterial microbiome was dominated by Staphylococcus, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, members of the family Enterobacteriaceae, Lactococcus, Aerococcus, members of the family Rhizobiaceae, Anaerobacillus, Streptococcus, members of the family Intrasporangiaceae, members of the family Planococcaceae, Corynebacterium, Nocardioides, and Chryseobacterium. Significant differences in alpha and beta diversity analysis suggest an effect of udder health status and breed on the composition of raw bovine milk microbiota. LEfSe analysis showed 45 and 51 discriminative taxonomic biomarkers associated with udder health status and with one of the four breeds respectively, suggesting an effect of subclinical mastitis and breed on the microbiota of milk in cattle.

A total of 90 cows from three commercial farms were used to evaluate the relationship between subclinical mastitis and clinical mastitis and thermal nociceptive threshold. Milk strips from all udder quarters were tested for clinical mastitis with visual inspection of milk and udder alterations and for subclinical mastitis using California Mastitis Test. Milk yield was recorded, milk was sampled and further analyzed for somatic cells count (SCC). Cows were considered healthy when SCC<200 000 cells/ml and no visual alterations in milk and/or udder, with mild subclinical mastitis when SCC>200 000 cells/ml and no visual alterations in milk and/or udder, with moderate subclinical mastitis when SCC>500 000 cells/ml and no visual alterations in milk and/or udder and with clinical mastitis when visual alterations in milk and/or udder were detected. Nociceptive threshold was evaluated with the thermal threshold meter apparatus applied to the rear legs. Thermal threshold (TT) decreased when we compared healthy cows with cows presenting clinical mastitis and tended to decrease when we compare healthy cows with those with moderate subclinical mastitis. TT was lower at the ipsilateral rear leg compared with the contralateral leg to the infected mammary gland. TT linearly decreases as log10SCC increased and it showed sharp decrease as log10SCC exceed the value of 6.4. Increase in one unit of log10SCC increased the odds of low thermal threshold (lower than 55.8°C). Subclinical mastitis might be a welfare issue as it tended to decrease nociceptive thermal threshold.  相似文献

Cross-sucking may be a problem in group-housed calves fed by automatic teat feeders. In the present study, the behaviour of calves fed by a conventional feeder with an open feeding stall (n=15 calves) was compared with the behaviour of calves fed by a modified feeder, closing in the rear after the calf has entered (n=14 calves). It was found that the calves fed by the feeder with the closed stall stayed longer in the feeding stall following milk ingestion (P<0.001), showed longer bouts of non-nutritive sucking directed to the teat after milk ingestion (P<0.005) and performed less cross-sucking in the first 15min after milk ingestion (P<0.001) than calves fed by the feeder with the open stall. The design of the feeder had, however, no significant influence on the incidence of cross-sucking performed without close temporal association with milk ingestion. As the modification in the feeding stall reduces cross-sucking and is not costly, it should be feasible to introduce it in practice.  相似文献
