The Atlantic auk assemblage includes four extant species, razorbill (Alca torda), dovekie (Alle alle), common murre (Uria aalge), and thick-billed murre (U. lomvia), and one recently extinct species, the flightless great auk (Pinguinus impennis). To determine the phylogenetic relationships among the species, a contiguous 4.2-kb region of the mitochondrial genome from the extant species was amplified using PCR. This region included one ribosomal RNA gene, four transfer RNA genes, two protein-coding genes, the control region, and intergenic spacers. Sets of PCR primers for amplifying the same region from great auk were designed from sequences of the extant species. The authenticity of the great auk sequence was ascertained by alternative amplifications, cloning, and separate analyses in an independent laboratory. Phylogenetic analyses of the entire assemblage, made possible by the great auk sequence, fully resolved the phylogenetic relationships and split it into two primary lineages, Uria versus Alle, Alca, and Pinguinus. A sister group relationship was identified between Alca and Pinguinus to the exclusion of ALLE: Phylogenetically, the flightless great auk originated late relative to other divergences within the assemblage. This suggests that three highly divergent species in terms of adaptive specializations, Alca, Alle, and Pinguinus, evolved from a single lineage in the Atlantic Ocean, in a process similar to the initial adaptive radiation of alcids in the Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

Bitter crab disease (BCD) of snow crabs, Chionoecetes opilio, is caused by a parasitic dinoflagellate, Hematodinium sp. The disease has shown an alarming increase in prevalence in the commercial fishery in eastern and northeastern areas of Newfoundland and Labrador since it was first recorded there in the early 1990s. We documented histopathological alterations to the tissues in snow crabs with heavy infections of Hematodinium sp. and during sporulation of the parasite. Pressure necrosis was evident in the spongy connective tissues of the hepatopancreas and the blood vessels in most organs. In heavy infections, little remained of the spongy connective tissues around the hepatopancreas. Damage to the gills varied; in some cases it was severe, particularly during sporulation, involving apparent thinning of the cuticle, loss of epithelial cells, and fusion of the membranous layers of adjacent gill lamellae. Affected lamellae exhibited varying degrees of distention with a loss of trabecular cells, hemocyte infiltrations, and swelling or "clubbing" along the distal margins. Large numbers of zoospores were located along the distal margins of affected lamellae suggesting that sporulation may cause a lysis or bursting of the thin lamellar cuticle, releasing spores. Pressure necrosis, due to the build up of high densities of parasites, was the primary histopathological alteration in most tissues. Hematodinium infections in the snow crab are chronic, long-term infections that end in host death, during sporulation of the parasite.  相似文献

Tissue samples and feces were collected from a dead, adult female coyote (Canis latrans) found at the side of the road in late March 2003 in the Avalon Peninsula region of Newfoundland, Canada. The coyote apparently died of vehicular-related trauma. Samples of lung, brain, heart, liver, and kidney were fixed in formalin and submitted for histologic examination. The entire remaining lung and heart also were submitted for examination. The coyote was diagnosed with moderate, multifocal, granulomatous interstitial pneumonia with eosinophilic vasculitis and many intralesional nematode eggs, larvae, and occasional intravascular adult worms. Adult nematodes recovered from the pulmonary arteries were identified as Angiostrongylus vasorum. Small foci of granulomatous inflammation, often containing nematode eggs and larvae, were scattered in the brain and kidney. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A. vasorum infection in a coyote from the only endemic area of infection in North America.  相似文献

Tongue and diaphragm samples from 158 black bears (Ursus americanus) from Newfoundland and Labrador were examined for Trichinella spiralis. No larvae were detected in samples from the island of Newfoundland but one animal from the Labrador samples was infected. The results of this and other studies suggest a lack of involvement of the black bear in a sylvatic cycle of T. spiralis in eastern Canada.  相似文献

Renal coccidiosis is reported for the first time in an auk (Alcidae). Infection was detected in seven of 50 nestling Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica) and a new species of coccidia, Eimeria fraterculae sp. n., is described. The structure and sporulation of oocysts are characterized. Meronts, gamonts, and developing oocysts were present in collecting duct epithelium of medullary cones. The predominant host response was hypertrophy of infected cells, tubule dilation, and a mild localized peritubular infiltration with mononuclear inflammatory cells.  相似文献

The eggshell fine structure of five sand fly species from Venezuela belonging to the genus Lutzomyia (L. migonei, L. ovallesi, L. absonodonta, L. gomezi and L. panamensis) was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The chorionic sculpturing of L. migonei, L. ovallesi, L. absonodonta and L. gomezi was characterized by series of columns arranged in palisade to form sinuous ridges. In inter-ridge areas, the basal layer was covered with fibrous material. The outer chorion of L. panamensis had a pattern known as "mountain- or volcano-like". The morphology of the posterior pole and aeropyle had a common structure in the five species, with some species-specific characters. The eggshell features of the five species are compared with those of other phlebotomine sand flies.  相似文献

Chironomid larvae and adults were collected from rock pool and intertidal sites between 1990 and 1994 on the exposed Atlantic coast and in more sheltered bays near St. John's. From several thousand specimens collected, 16 chironomid taxa were identified. Two were from intertidal habitats and the remainder occurred in rock pools. In intertidal habitats Halocladius variabilis was abundant in summer among clumps of fine filamentous algae, e.g. Pilayella littoralis. The previous Nearctic records of this chironomid were from Hudson Bay and Greenland although it is widespread in northern Europe. The other intertidal species, Telmatogeton japonicas, was recorded from one site, a rock outcrop on a beach in the mouth of a small stream. This Holarctic species has not been reported previously north of New York on the Atlantic coast. The rock-pool communities were dominated by Psectotanypus dyari, Cricotopus sylvestris, Psectocladius sordidellus gp, Orthocladius dubitatus, Chironomus riparius, and Tanytarsus sp. These taxa are known to tolerate sites with elevated salinity and/or conductivity and thus are present in polluted sites inland. The other eight chironomid species were rare and most were found at only one site. An exception was the Metriocnemus sp. collected in very low numbers at three sites and also collected previously during a survey of rock pools for larval mosquitoes in the same area. The current study shows that a diverse coastal chironomid community is present in the cold ocean habitats of eastern Newfoundland. The community is made up of both arctic and temperate faunal elements with widespread distributions not confined to coastal habitats. Ranges of temperature, salinity, conductivity and pH for the common species occurring in the rock pools are provided. The results suggest that coastal rock pool habitats could be a natural laboratory for studies on the evolutionary ecology of pollution tolerance in chironomids.  相似文献

Summary Two species of trypanosomes,Trypanosoma hedricki andT. myoti, isolated respectively fromEptesicus fuscus andMyotis lucifugus, were cloned.T. hedricki produced long trypomastigotesin vitro (mean length 22.1±0.3 m); the buoyant densities of its kinetoplastic and nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid (kDNA and nDNA) were respectively 1.700 and 1.710 g ml–1 and it possessed a small amount of a satellite component (C-DNA) of density 1.716 g ml–1. This species is in this respect closely related toT. dionisii. T. myoti produced long trypomastigotesin vitro (mean length 20.1±0.2 m); its DNA buoyant densities (g ml–1) were: kDNA 1.700 and nDNA 1.710 (no C-DNA was detected). In this respect, therefore,T. myoti is closer toT. cruzi than the other bat trypanosomes. ac]19830129  相似文献

In this work, we analyzed the karyotypes of five Hypostomus species. Hypostomus cf. heraldoi, from the Mogi-Gua?u River, had 2n = 72 chromosomes, with a nucleolar organizer region (NOR) in one chromosomal pair. Hypostomus regani, from the Mogi-Gua?u River had 2n = 72 chromosomes with NORs in two chromosomal pairs. Hypostomus sp., from the Mogi-Gua?u River basin, had 2n = 68 chromosomes, with NORs in two chromosomal pairs. Hypostomus aff. agna, from Cavalo Stream, had 2n = 74 chromosomes with NORs in two chromosomal pairs. Hypostomus cf. topavae, from Carrapato Stream, had 2n = 80 chromosomes, with NORs in two chromosomal pairs. Hypostomus species showed marked diversity in the karyotypic formula, which suggested the occurrence of several Robertsonian rearrangements and pericentric inversions during the evolutionary history of this genus. This hypothesis was supported by the occurrence of a large number of uniarmed chromosomes and multiple NORs in a terminal position in most species and may be a derived condition in the Loricariidae.  相似文献

Chromosome data are important for elucidating intergeneric relationships and delimiting infrafamilial tribes in plants. This paper reports karyological data for 12 Seriphidium (Bess.) Poljak. species from China, of these, five count as new reports and the others have been reported elsewhere. We also report the tetraploid level in S. schrenkianum for the first time. The karyotype formulae and types for the five new reports are: S. schrenkianum (Ledeb.) Poljak. 2n = 4x = 36 = 22m + 12sm + 2st, S. sublessingianum (Kell.) Poljak. 2n = 2x = 18 = 14m + 4sm and S. transiliense (Poljak.) Poljak. 2n = 2x = 18 = 4M + 6m + 2m(SAT) + 4sm + 2sm(SAT), belong to 2A type; S. cinum (Berg. ex Poljak.) Poljak. 2n = 2x = 18 = 8m + 10sm and S. sawanense Y. R. Ling et C. J. Humphries 2n = 2x = 18 = 10m + 2m(SAT) + 6sm, belong to 2B type. Furthermore, we estimated karyotype asymmetry in the 12 species by using an intrachromosomal asymmetry index and an interchromosomal asymmetry index. The data increase information about the karyosystematics of Seriphidium.  相似文献

The parasitic dinoflagellate Hematodinium sp. causes a condition known as bitter crab disease (BCD) in snow crabs Chionoecetes opilio and Tanner crabs C. bairdi. As the name of the condition implies, crabs infected with BCD are unmarketable due to their bitter flavor. We surveyed the distribution of BCD in 3 regions within the snow crab fishery of Newfoundland from 1997 to 2003. Over time, the disease has become firmly established in Conception and Bonavista Bays and persists at low levels on the Avalon fishing grounds. An epizootic occurred within Bonavista and Conception Bays in 1999 and persisted in Conception Bay in 2000, reaching prevalences of over 2% to 9% in trapped and trawled male crabs and from 19 to 26% in trawled and trapped female crabs, respectively. Infections were highest in females and small males, i.e. the unfished and pre-recruit portions of the fishery. In a mortality study, all of the naturally infected crabs died and 50% of the experimentally inoculated crabs died. Patterns in the molting cycle and prevalence of infection indicate that transmission occurs during the post-molt condition, and that overt infections probably develop 2 to 4 mo later with mortalities occurring at least 3 to 4 mo thereafter. The hydrography of this bay may have contributed to the epizootic as infections were centered within the deeper confines of the bay. Analysis of various abiotic factors uncovered a significant positive association between prevalence, depth and mud/sand substrates; the nature of this relationship was not apparent but may be related to diet or alternate hosts. Lastly, given the increase in BCD in snow crabs in Newfoundland, we recommend that fishery management programs for Chionoecetes fisheries employ non-selective gear to monitor for Hematodinium infections in female and juvenile crabs because these under-sampled members of the population may forewarn of impending recruitment declines that might otherwise remain unexplained.  相似文献

Baragwanathia abitibiensis is described from the Sextant Formation of northern Ontario, Canada (middle to upper Kmsian age). The plant remains are primarily compressions in which flattened xylem strands, epidermis with stomata, and cuticle are well preserved. Pyrite permineralization of the leaves was Ibiuid in one specimen. Comparison with B. longijolia Lang & Cookson indicates remarkable morphological similarities and probable anatomical similarities although details of the structure of the epidermis and cuticle are lacking in B. longijolia. No information is available on the outline of the cauline xylem strand in B. abitibiensis nor on the form and position of the sporangia it bore. Comparisons are also made to species of Drepanophycus. The age of/?, longijolia and the Baragwanathia Flora, is discussed with particular reference to the putative dating of some specimens as Silurian. The morphological and anatomical complexity of Baragwanathia is at a level of advancement typical of Early to Middle Devonian lycopods. There is no evidence of precursors to the genus associated with the fragments of land vascular plants in the well-dated Silurian sediments of Wales, Czechoslovakia, New York State, or Podolia.  相似文献

We describe the sperm ultrastructure of five species of Colostethus from Brazil. The general structures of the spermatozoa (acrosomal complex and flagellar apparatus) were similar to species within the Bufonoidea. Colostethus brunneus, Colostethus sp. (aff. trilineatus), Colostethus nidicola and Colostethus sp. had biflagellated spermatozoa, whereas the spermatozoa of Colostethus stepheni had a single flagellum, a characteristic previously unknown for this genus. In addition, the spermatozoa of this species showed some mitochondria within the thick, undulating membrane. These characteristics are apparently common to dendrobatid species that have a single flagellum. Based on these findings, we tentatively consider biflagellarity to be an apomorphic condition in the Dendrobatidae. In addition, the results described here do not support the proposed regrouping of the ‘brunneus’ and ‘alagoanus’ groups in a monophyletic ‘trilineatus’ group.  相似文献
