Objectives: Pediatricians underdiagnose overweight and feel ineffective at counseling. Given the relationship between physicians’ health and health habits and counseling behaviors, we sought to determine the 1) percentage of pediatricians who are overweight; 2) accuracy of pediatricians’ own weight status classification; and 3) relationship between weight self‐perception and perceived ease of obesity counseling. Research Methods and Procedures: This study was a cross‐sectional, mail survey of North Carolina pediatricians that queried about their weight status and ease of counseling. Accuracy of pediatricians’ self‐classification of weight status was compared with BMIs derived from self‐reported height and weight. Using logistic regression, controlling for potential confounding variables, we examined the association between weight perception and ease of counseling. Results: The unadjusted response rate was 62%, and the adjusted response rate was 71% (n = 355). Nearly one‐half (49%) of overweight pediatricians did not identify themselves as such. Men had greater adjusted odds of misclassifying overweight than women [odds ratio (OR), 3.61; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.81, 7.21]. Self‐classified “thin” pediatricians had nearly six times the odds of reporting more counseling difficulty as a result of their weight than “average” weight pediatricians (OR = 5.69; 95% CI = 2.30, 14.1), and self‐identified “overweight” pediatricians reported nearly four times as great counseling difficulty as “average” weight physicians (OR = 3.84; 95% CI = 1.11, 13.3), after adjustment for self‐reported BMI weight status and other potential confounders. Discussion: The roles that physician weight misclassification and self‐perception potentially play in influencing rates of obesity counseling warrant further research.  相似文献

School-based malaria control has been recognized as a new approach for the control of this disease in the Greater Mekong Subregion since 2000. We evaluated a school-based malaria control program near the western border of Thailand using a before-after intervention study. The major intervention activities included teacher training with specialized malaria teaching materials and participatory learning methods. The target population was 17 school principals, 111 teachers and 852 schoolchildren of grade 3, 4, and 5 in 17 schools. After the intervention, the teachers taught about malaria more actively than before. The teachers who could design a lesson plan on malaria increased from 30.7% to 47.7% (p=0.015) and the teachers who had taught about malaria increased from 71.9% to 84.3% (p=0.035). As a result of the program, the schoolchildren changed their behavior positively towards malaria prevention with significant difference in 6 of 7 questions. For example, the schoolchildren 'who always took care of mosquito bites' increased from 42.7% to 62.1% (p<0.001) and the schoolchildren 'who always reported their parents or teachers when they had fever' increased from 36.0% to 56.0% (p<0.001). In conclusion, the keys to a successful intervention lie in good teaching materials and a participatory approach utilizing the well-established Thailand's school health system. Beyond Thailand, school-based malaria control could be applied to other Greater Mekong Subregion countries with careful analysis of school health context in each country.  相似文献

Data regarding the sexual behavior of black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus bieti) were collected in 1998 in a one-male unit in captivity by all-occurrences sampling during the mating season. Before the present study, little was known about the sexual behavior of this species. This study showed that female solicitation is mainly expressed as “prostration plus glancing laterally” (PG) or “sitting plus head moving up and down” (HM), and male solicitation is exhibited by the “grunt bared-teeth display.” The mount-to-ejaculation ratio was 5.2 on average, and single-mount ejaculations (SMEs) were observed in only 4.4% of mounts on days with at least one ejaculation. Therefore, the main copulatory pattern of this species is multiple-mount ejaculation (MME). Females initiated 72% of 18 ejaculatory mounts. Females initiated more ejaculatory mounts than non-ejaculatory ones. In general, the patterns of sexual behavior in this species are similar to those reported for other Colobines. In this paper, we measured the HCN potential (HCN-p) of 148 sorghum (Sorghum hicolor (L.) Moench) and sudangrass (Sorghum sudanense) varieties and the changes of HCN-P during seedling growth. The results showed that most of the varieties had their HCN-p more than 1000 ppm (94:59%). Among them, 33.11% belonged to 1400–1600 ppm, 22.97% to 1200–1400 ppm, 17.57% to 1000–1200 ppm, and 14.86% to 1600–1800 ppm. The varieties which HCN-p were less than 1000 ppm or higher than 1800 ppm had a little proportion (11.44%). The varieties with the lowest HCN-p were “Xinliang 80” (672 ppm), “sudancao” (753 ppm), “Huangke Sudancao” (856 ppm), “Limuji” (860 ppm), and “MI03” (876 ppm). Those with the highest HCN-p were “Yuanxin lA” (1967 ppm), “Shisanjie” (1904 ppm), “Mi- bangz” (Da Lai (1900 ppm), “7503 A” (1889 ppm), and Mijia Honggaoliang (1883 ppm). Sudangrass had the lowest HCN-p (about 700 ppm), sweet sorghum had higher HCN-p (about 1500 ppm). with the seedling growth, HCN-p reached its highest value in 4-day-old seedling. The first leaf had the highest HCN-p content, the second leaf and sheath had lower and root had the lowest.  相似文献

The response properties of jittery movement fibers (JMF) in the crayfish optic tract reacting to a non-moving temporally patterned light were analyzed. The JMFs usually show no response during the regular flickering of stationary light with a flash duration of less than 50 msec when the stimulus frequency is between 4 and 20 per second; however they do respond when the flickering stops if a certain number of flashes have been given. The response appears about 50 msec after the first missing flash, i.e., the latency of the response after the last flash of the train changed from 100 to 300 msec. Thus, the “off” response at the end of the flicker is entrained to the stimulus repetition interval and locked onto the time of the first missing flash. The response of a sustaining fiber to an identical stimulus has quite different features as illustrated in Fig. 2. Some of the fibers show responses to the beginning part of the flicker but not necessarily to each flash, and habituate after several flashes. When a single flash longer than 250 msec is given, the fiber shows an “off” response with about 50 msec latency, as it does to sustained light. Some fibers show a double burst of “off” discharge to single flashes; the first at 50 msec is followed after 120 msec by the second one. However, when the flash duration is between 250 and 50 msec, a single flash elicits little or no response. The latency of the “off” response is as much as 300 msec for short single flashes less than 50 msec. An “on” response to flashes of light is observed when the inter-stimulus interval is more than 5 sec. The responses to the beginning part of flicker train are not simply locked to the just preceding flash except the “on” response to the very first one, but they can be the long latency responses to the flash before that. This response is modified in latency by the succeeding flashes in flicker trains and becomes entrained to the missing flash. Four types of entrainment are classified on the basis of the change in latency from the missing flash with regard to the number of flashes in a train. In most cases, 10 flashes are sufficient to entrain the response to the first missing flash. Non-resposiveness, i.e., habituation, during a regular flicker, may be due to an active inhibitory process, initiated by each succeeding light pulse. The response to the missing flash, therefore results from a disinhibited modified response to the last flash. Some JMFs continue to respond to the flicker even after a considerable number of flashes but only when the repetition interval is about 120 msec corresponding well to the interval of the double burst “off” discharge, thus the JMF has a resonant frequency of about 8 Hz. The JMFs appear to be acting as an irregularity detector in temporal sequence.  相似文献

Research on prepared learning demonstrates that fear-conditioning biases may exist to natural hazards (e.g., snakes) compared to nonnatural hazards (e.g., electrical cords) and that fear is more readily learned toward exemplars of a racial out-group than toward exemplars of one's own race. Here we push the limits of the generalizability of the mechanisms underlying race biases in a fear-conditioning paradigm by using arbitrary group categories not distinguished by race. Groups were distinguishable solely by t-shirt color, with assignment based on performance in a perceptual task. In this “minimal group paradigm,” we found that out-group exemplars were more readily associated with an aversive stimulus than exemplars of one's in-group. Our findings suggest that prepared learning in an intergroup context is not limited to contexts involving racial categories involving histories rife with cultural stereotypes and that previous findings of learning biases along racial lines may be interpreted as a by-product of a broader psychological system for prepared fear learning toward categories of agents that may have posed persistent threats over human evolutionary history.  相似文献

Rosette-forming cells, present in normal spleen, are composed of 70% theta-positive cells with “high” in vitro sensitivity to Azathioprine (AZ) (1 μg/ml) and 30% theta-negative cells with “low” sensitivity to AZ (500 μg/ml). Theta-positive RFC are also found in the thymus (with “high” sensitivity to AZ) and in lymph nodes and peripheral blood (with “intermediate” sensitivity to AZ:50 μg/ml). RFC with “high” sensitivity to AZ (T1) are eliminated from the spleen by adult thymectomy in less than 6 days; it takes more than 48 hours exposure to antilymphocyte serum (ALS) in vivo to suppress them, whereas RFC with “intermediate” sensitivity to AZ (T2), present in lymph nodes and peripheral blood, disappear 6 hours after in vivo ALS treatment but not after adult thymectomy.  相似文献

Handling and training methods of horses, which specially emphasize the importance of understanding horse body language and the use of reinforcements, are often used in practice, yet their effects are not completely known. This study investigated whether the use of a sympathetic approach during the preparation for public auctions influenced the reactivity of young horses towards humans. Sixteen thoroughbred yearlings were prepared for the public auctions during one month: eight horses (“Control”) were handled according to conventional practices, while the others (“Treated”) were handled with two sessions of basic training based on body language. The reactivity of horses was assessed in the presence of an “unfamiliar person” and a “familiar person” inside the horse's box. The experimenter recorded the presence/absence of selected behaviors during seven observational moments: “approaching the box,” “opening the box door,” “entering the box,” and four consecutive observations every thirty seconds. Reactivity of horses was ranked during the first experience of “bit,” “grooming,” “shower,” and application of the “surcingle.” Heart rate was telemetrically recorded during this final test. At the end of the auction preparation, “Treated” horses exhibited more “contact” (p = 0.08) and “lick” (p < 0.05) behaviors in the presence of a person. “Control” horses showed higher (non-significant) percentages of negative (more nervous) rankings during “bit,” “grooming,” and “surcingle” tests. Two “Control” horses showed aggressive behavior during the application of the surcingle and the test was interrupted to guarantee person and animal safety. In this pilot study, horses handled with a sympathetic approach showed less reactive behaviors compared with “Control” horses. It would be interesting to enlarge the sample size and assess if the use of non-coercive handling during the whole training period influences their welfare positively and for a long time.  相似文献

As the minority group frequently at the centre of public fear in the post-9/11 era, Arab Americans’ own sentiment toward, and concerns with, crime, has eluded scholarly attention. This study investigated their fear of crime net of five empirically validated fear of crime theoretical models. Face-to-face interviews with a random sample of Arab and non-Arab households in Metro-Detroit, Michigan indicated that net of all controls, Arab Americans experienced significantly higher levels of fear concerning both general and bias crimes than non-Arab Americans. The greater fear among Arab Americans calls for policy and practice change, and moving from perceiving Arab Americans as a major “source” of fear, to “carriers” of fear who are in need of more attention, care, and assistance.  相似文献

We compared two “3?×?8” shift rotas with backward rotation and quick return (morning and night shift in the same day) in a 5- or 6-day shift cycle, and a “2?×?12” shift rota with forward rotation in a 5-d shift cycle. A total of 294 nurses (72.6% women, mean age 33.8) were examined in a survey on work-related stress, including the Standard Shiftwork Index. Ten nurses per each shift roster recorded their activity and rest periods by actigraphy, rated sleepiness and sleep quality, and collected salivary cortisol throughout the whole shift cycle. Nurses engaged in the “2?×?12” rota showed lower levels of sleep disturbances and, according to actigraphy, sleep duration was more balanced and less fragmented than in the “3?×?8” rosters. The counter-clockwise shift rotation and quick return of “3?×?8” schedules reduce possibility of sleep and recovery. The insertion of a morning shift before the day with quick return increases night sleep by about 1?h. Nurses who take a nap during the night shift require 40% less sleep in the morning after. The “2?×?12” clockwise roster, in spite of 50% increased length of shift, allows a better recovery and more satisfying leisure times, thanks to longer intervals between work periods. Sleepiness increased more during the night than day shifts in all rosters, but without significant difference between 8-h and 12-h rosters. However, the significantly higher level at the start of the night shift in the “3?×?8” rotas points out that the fast backward rotation with quick return puts the subjects in less efficient operational conditions. Some personal characteristics, such as morningness, lability to overcome drowsiness, flexibility of sleeping habits and age were significantly associated to sleep disturbances in nurses engaged in the “3?×?8” rotas, but not in the “2?×?12” schedule.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether, when subjects were living in a moderately warm environment: (1) the softness of clothing worn during the daytime could influence the subjects’ preference in the evening for the softness of clothing and a face towel; and (2) the softness of bedding materials could modulate their nocturnal body temperature, overnight urinary catecholamine excretion, and sleep quality. Six females were tested during the luteal phase of their menstrual cycles. The experiment was conducted over three consecutive days and nights in a climatic chamber controlled at 28 ± 0.2 °C and 50% RH during the evening (from 19:30 to 21:30 h) and at 29 ± 0.2 °C and 50% RH during the sleep period (from 22:30 to 07:00 h). The first night was for adaptation to the experimental chamber. Five different sets of clothing and bedding were used; these were identical except for the softness/hardness of the materials used (due to treatment with fabric softener or starch), and material softness decreased in the order: Type A (softest)?>?Type B > Type C > Type D > Type E (hardest). There were two phases to the experiment, conducted in random order. In one phase, subjects wore “soft type” (Type B) T-shirt and shorts in the daytime and, in the other phase, “hard type” (Type D/E) T-shirt and shorts. In both phases, subjects were asked at 21:30 h to select a T-shirt and a face towel which they felt would be most comfortable to use. At night, they slept on bedding (a mattress cover, a pillowcase and a covering blanket) which was of the same degree of softness as the T-shirt and shorts that had been worn in the daytime in that phase. Rectal temperature, skin temperatures at seven sites, and body movement were measured during sleep, an overnight urine sample was taken for measurement of urinary excretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline, and subjective sleep quality was assessed on being woken the following morning. The main results were as follows: (1) T-shirt preference in the evening showed large inter-individual variation but did not differ significantly between the two phases (when “hard type” or “soft type” clothing had been worn during the daytime). The preferred texture of the face towel was softer than that of the T-shirt, the difference in softness between the chosen face towel and T-shirt being significant (p < 0.05 and p < 0.10, respectively, when having worn “soft type” and “hard type” clothing in the daytime). (2) Rectal temperature and mean skin temperature were not significantly different when sleeping with “soft type” (Type B) and “hard type” (Type D/E) bedding materials. (3) Overnight secretions of urinary adrenaline and noradrenaline were significantly less with “soft type” than “hard type” (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05 for adrenaline and noradrenaline, respectively) bedding. (4) When sleeping with “soft type” bedding materials, five out of the six subjects showed less body movements during the sleep period and reported that they had slept better. These results suggest that, in a moderately warm environment, bedding materials with a softer texture might be more comfortable to the subject (due to less tactile stimulation of the skin, which results in neurophysiological relaxation) and provide them with better sleep quality.  相似文献

Experimental conditions that allow “normal” development of starfish eggs stripped of the fertilization membrane are reported in this paper. Four kinds of intercellular relation are distinguished during the pre-hatching stages of these eggs. Cells from 2- to 8-cell stages are hardly related to each other, while those from 16- to 128-cell stages are bound loosely together. After the 8th division (about 5.5 hr after insemination at 21°C) cells adhere closely and cooperate with each other to perform morphogenetic movement of “blastulation”. This relation is taken over by that of a true multicellular system at about 10 hr after insemination. Closely after this, the function of cilia carries the embryo away from the substratum.  相似文献

The “robust” australopithecines are often depicted as having large and powerfully built bodies to match their massive masticatory apparatus, but until 1988 the sample of postcranial remains attributed with certainty to this group was very limited. Almost nothing was known about the body of the East African “robust” australopithecine because taxonomic attribution of the postcrania was so uncertain. The body of the South African “robust” australopithecine had to be reconstructed from about a dozen isolated fragments of postcrania. Now a partial skeleton is attributed with confidence to the East African “robust” group along with several isolated bones. The South African sample has more than tripled. Analyses of this vastly expanded sample reveal that a large portion of postcrania attributed to “robust” australopithecines from Swartkrans Member 1 (35%) are from extraordinarily small-bodied individuals similar in size to a modern Pygmy weighing as little as 28 kg. These small elements include parts from the forelimb, spine, and hindlimb. About 22% of these Swartkrans 1 “robust” australopithecines are about the same size as a modern human weighing about 43 kgs and about 43% are larger than this standard but less than or equal to a 54 kg modern human. Approximately the same pattern is true for the Swartkrans 2 hominids, but taxonomic attribution is less certain. All of the Member 3 specimens are similar in size to the 45 kg standard. The partial skeleton of the East African “robust” australopithecine (KNM-ER 1500) has hindlimb joints that would correspond to a modern human of 34 kgs although the actual weight may be 5 to 10 kgs greater judging from shaft robusticity and forelimb size. The largest postcranial element attributed with some certainty to the East African “robust” australopithecine group (the talus, KNM-ER 1464) is about the same overall size as a modern human of 54 kgs, although its tibial facet is slightly smaller. Although many previous studies have hinted at the possibility that “robust” australopithecines had relatively small bodies, the new fossils provide substantial evidence that these creatures ranged from quite small to only moderate in body size relative to modern humans. These were the petite-bodied vegetarian cousins of our ancestors. Sexual dimorphism in body size appears to be greater than that in modern humans, similar to that in Pan, and less than that in Gorilla or Pongo, although such comparisons are of limited value given the small samples, poorly known body proportions, time averaging, and many other problems.  相似文献

Poly(Nδ-carbobenzoxy, Nδ-benzyl-L -ornithine) (PCBLO) was prepared by the standard NCA method. PCBLO was converted into poly(Nδ-benzyl-L -ornithine) (PBLO) through decarbobenzoxylation with hydrogen bromide. The monomer Nδ-benzyl-L -ornithine was synthesized by reacting L -ornithine with benzaldehyde, followed by hydrogenation. The conformation of the two polypeptides was studied by optical rotatory dispersion and circular dichroism. PCBLO forms a right-handed helix in helix-promoting solvents. In mixed solvents of chloroform and dichloroacetic acid (DCA) it undergoes a sharp helix–coil transition at 12% (v/v) DCA at 25°C, as compared with 36% for poly(Nδ-carbobenzoxy-L -ornithine) (PCLO). Like PCLO, the helix–coil transition is “inverse,” that is, high temperature favors the helical form. PBLO is soluble in water at pH below 7 and has a “coiled” conformation. In 88% (v/v) 1-propanol above pH (apparent) 9.6 it is completely helical. In 50% 1-propanol the transition pH (apparent) is about 7.4; this compares with a pHtr of about 10 for poly-L -ornithine in the same solvent.  相似文献

As the first step in the comparative embryological study of Blattodea, with the aim of reconstructing the groundplan and phylogeny of Dictyoptera and Polyneoptera, the embryonic development of a corydiid was examined and described in detail using Eucorydia yasumatsui . Ten to fifteen micropyles are localized on the ventral side of the egg, and aggregated symbiont bacterial “mycetomes” are found in the egg. The embryo is formed by the fusion of paired blastodermal regions, with higher cellular density on the ventral side of the egg. This type of embryo formation, regarded as one of the embryological autapomorphies of Polyneoptera, was first demonstrated for “Blattaria” in the present study. The embryo undergoes embryogenesis of the short germ band type, and elongates to its full length on the ventral side of the egg. The embryo undergoes katatrepsis and dorsal closure, and then finally, it acquires its definitive form, keeping its original position on the ventral side of the egg, with its anteroposterior axis never reversed throughout development. The information obtained was compared with that of previous studies on other insects. “Micropyles grouped on the ventral side of the egg” is thought to be a part of the groundplan of Dictyoptera, and “possession of bacteria in the form of mycetomes” to be an apomorphic groundplan of Blattodea. Corydiid embryos were revealed to perform blastokinesis of the “non‐reversion type (N)”, as reported in blaberoid cockroaches other than Corydiidae (“Ectobiidae,” Blaberidae, etc.) and in Mantodea; the embryos of blattoid cockroaches (Blattidae and Cryptocercidae) and Isoptera undergo blastokinesis of the “reversion type (R),” in which the anteroposterior axis of the embryo is reversed during blastokinesis. Dictyopteran blastokinesis types can be summarized as “Mantodea (N) + Blattodea [= Blaberoidea (N) + Blattoidea (R) + Isoptera (R)]”.  相似文献

We add to the knowledge of the dentition and lower jaw of the primitive marsupial or near marsupial, Kokopellia juddi, based on newly collected materials from the medial Cretaceous (Albian–Cenomanian) of central Utah. The dental formula, i4 c1 p3 m4, is primitive for (or with respect to) Marsupialia, as are a number of features of the dentary and dentition: presence of a labial mandibular foramen, ?an inflected angle, ?and a trace of the meckelian groove; lack of “staggering” of the lower incisor series; lack of “twinning” between entoconid and hypoconulid on lower molars; incompletely lingual position of lower molar paraconid; upper molar protocone relatively small and mesiodistally narrow; and conules placed about halfway between the protocone and the paracone–metacone. Other than the stylocone, cusps are lacking from the stylar shelf; we argue that this represents the primitive marsupial condition based on the economy of character change and the stratigraphic record of marsupials in the Cretaceous of North America. Recent discoveries of early marsupials, eutherians, and therians of metatherian–eutherian grade provide data indicating that some derived features of the dentary and dentition (e.g., loss of coronoid, meckelian groove, and labial mandibular foramen; acquisition of strong, “winged” conules, double rank postvallum/prevallid shearing, and stylar cusp D) probably arose independently, in some cases more than once, among the major groups of tribosphenic mammals. In turn, this suggests that a common ancestor for marsupials and placentals was more primitive than has generally been appreciated.  相似文献

繁殖群体数量是中华鲟能否成功繁殖的重要影响因子, 建议作为长江生态考核的重要评价指标。根据重要种群参数和历史数据, 基于稳态转换理论和方法, 确定中华鲟繁殖群体数量指标的评估基准值和等级, 670尾以上为“优”、400—670尾为“良”、200—400尾为“中”、50—200尾为“差”、50尾以下为“极差”。水声学探测结果显示, 1998—2001年中华鲟繁殖群体数量指标评级为“良”; 2004—2012年三峡工程蓄水后至向家坝蓄水前评级为“中”; 2013—2020年评级为“极差”。为了复壮中华鲟野生种群, 建议修复葛洲坝下中华鲟产卵场功能, 大规模放流性成熟亲鱼和大规格个体, 建立国家级中华鲟保育中心。  相似文献

In rat ventricular strips at 35° and 37°C, at 1 Hz and 3 Hz stimulation rate and in Krebs-Henseleit and Tyrode solution, cumulative dose/response curves of ouabain revealed two apparent positive inotropic effects, a “low-dose” effect with a half maximal increase in contractile force (ED50) of 0.5 μM ouabain representing about 30% of the total inotropy and a “high-dose” effect of 19 to 35 μM ouabain representing about 70% of total inotropy. The overall or combined ED50 was 16 μM ouabain. The “low-dose” effect was not prevented by α or β adrenergic blockade, by reserpinization, or by histamine H2 antagonist. However, when the tissue preparations were washed for 60 to 120 min after completion of the first dose/response experiment, a second dose/response curve with ouabain revealed an absence or disappearance of the “low-dose” effect and a normal “high-dose” effect. The “low-dose” effect is apparently related to pretreatment with ouabain. We refer to this phenomenon as “desensitization”.  相似文献
