Seasonal variation in thermal preference of Arctic charr from a North Norwegian population (70°N) was studied in an electronic shuttlebox, which allowed the fish to control the water temperature by moving between two chambers. The fish were acclimated to 12 °C and a natural photoperiod before measurements. Fish were tested in autumn (September–October), winter (January–February), spring (April–May) and summer (June–August).

Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.) from Lake Thingvallavatn, Iceland occur as four distinct morphs: large benthivorous (LB), dwarf benthivorous (DB), piscivorous (PI) and planktonivorous (PL). The morphs differ with respect to body size, head morphology, growth rate, and life history. The aim of this study was to investigate the paired box protein 7 (Pax7) gene as a candidate for such polymorphisms due to its importance in cranio-facial, skeletal muscle, and central nervous system development. No variation in coding and intronic sequences was found between morphs. We identified 10 alternate Pax7 isoforms with insertions/deletions: a four-residue (GNRT) deletion, a GEASS insertion truncated by the first serine residue (GEAS), and a thirteen-residue insertion (GQYA/TGPEYVYCGT). The latter insertion with a threonine (T) contains a putative casein kinase II (CK-2) phosphorylation site. Pax7 spatial expression patterns were identical in embryos of DB-, LB-, and PL-morphs, and were similar to those described for zebrafish Pax7c, but a difference in temporal expression for segmentation was observed between DB and LB morphs. At the end of segmentation, novel expression was observed in the mandibular region as two bilateral domains. The potential role of multiple alternative splicing of the Pax7 gene for the generation of different Arctic charr morphs is briefly discussed.

Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus , less than 150 mm in size were frequently captured at sea in northern Labrador in areas where salinities of 30‰ or higher had been recorded. These captures were inconsistent with many earlier reports for other areas that indicated Arctic charr less than 150 mm in size were not found at sea. A series of salinity challenge tests was carried out in the field, using wild Ikarut River charr, and in the laboratory, using cultured Fraser River charr, to understand more about the potential fate of these small fish. The results of challenge tests with small Arctic charr (< 120 mm) indicated that at intermediate salinities (10–20‰), these fish can readily survive. In laboratory tests with salinities at 30‰, survival was size dependent and would suggest that in natural situations, small charr would require periodic access to fresh or brackish water to stay alive. The influence of water temperature on salinity tolerance may be important when fish are exposed to temperatures that are below 0° C.

RésuméTo determine the role and the importance of adult fish predation directly and indirectly in the food web of oligomesotrophic Lake Pavin, reproduction, condition, and feeding activity of the dominant adult chctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus, L.) were studied. Fish were caught by gillnets of different mesh sizes once a month from April to December 1992. The gonad cycle showed that the spawning period occurred between October to December. Relative fecundity is about 2509 ovules per kg of female fish and ovule mean diameter is 4.7 mm ( 0.6 mm). Seasonal variations of the sex-ratio (Max. in April = 2.67 and Min. in October=0.19) indicated the intralake migrations of females and males. The condition coefficients showed higher values for females than males; the maximum was observed in summer for both sexes and the minimum in April and in October for males and females, respectively. Low values of the condition were also observed during the spawning period. High feeding activity was recorded in spring and in December after reproduction; low feeding activity was observed in October during reproduction. Asellus aquaticus was quantitatively the dominant prey from April to September; during the sp awning period, S. alpinus consumed its own eggs, particularly in large quantity in December. Daphnia longispina was numerically the dominant prey all over the studied cycle and the electivity (Ivlev Index) of arctic charr on the latter prey ranged from +s+0.79 to +0.16. During April, more than 15 500 individuals of D. longispina per kg of fish were found in the gut contents. The selective predation of S. alpinus on benthic (A. aquatics) and zooplankton prey (D. longispina) indicated that the fish immigrate during their feeding activity from benthic/littoral to the pelagic area.

The study compares the resource utilization of two sympatric Arctic charr morphs over an annual period in a subarctic lake. The two morphs are reproductively isolated in time and place of spawning, and are referred to as the littoral and profundal morphs (L-morph and P-morph) according to their spawning habitats. Fish were sampled monthly (ice-free season) or bimonthly (winter) using gillnets in the main lake habitats. The spatial range of the P-morph was restricted to the profundal zone throughout the whole annual period. The L-morph in contrast utilized all main habitats, exhibiting distinct seasonal and ontogenetic variations in habitat distribution. In the spring, the whole L-morph population was located along the bottom profile of the lake, in profundal and littoral habitats. During summer and autumn, habitat segregation occurred between different life-stages, juveniles mainly utilizing the profundal, pre-adults the pelagic and adult fishes the littoral zone. During winter the whole population was assembled in the littoral habitat. The L-morph also had large seasonal and ontogenetic variations in their feeding ecology, with littoral zoobenthos, zooplankton and surface insects being important prey. The P-morph had a narrower diet niche mainly consisting of chironomid larvae and other profundal zoobenthos. Hence, the two Arctic charr morphs exhibited a consistent resource differentiation during all annual seasons and throughout their life cycles, except for a dietary overlap between P-morph and juvenile L-morph charr in the profundal during summer. The findings are discussed in relation to resource polymorphism and incipient speciation.

Twenty-one metazoan parasite species were found in Arctic charr at three coastal sites in west Greenland, including Neascus sp. and the nematode Pseudoterranova decipiens , new records for Arctic charr. Twelve species are new records for Arctic charr in Greenland. The quantitative composition of the parasite communities varied, but the freshwater species ( Diphyllobothrium ditremwn, Eubothriutn salvelini, Proteocephalus longicollis, Crepidostotnutn farianis ) were usually numerically dominant, even in anadromous fish. The absence from Greenland of Mysidacea, Amphipoda, Ephemeroptera and Odonata excludes parasites requiring such organisms as intermediate hosts, including the cestode Cyathocephalus truncatus , nematodes of the genus Cystidicola , and freshwater acanthocephalans.

The seasonal occurrence of the monogenean ectoparasite Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg infecting Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.) in the two rivers Skibotnelva and Signaldalselva in northern Norway was studied in the period from autumn 2003 to autumn 2005. Skibotnelva has been infected with the parasite since 1979, and treated with rotenone twice. Most likely resident Arctic charr avoided the rotenone treatment in small tributary streams, and thus was the source of the repeated re-infection of this river. G. salaris was first recorded in Signaldalselva in the year 2000 and it is still untreated. Unlike Atlantic salmon, which is highly susceptible to G. salaris, Arctic charr can display a wide range of host-responses to G. salaris infections. Arctic charr were sampled by electro fishing with a total sample of 681 Arctic charr. The results from this study demonstrate an evident seasonal dynamic in G. salaris infection in charr in both rivers. Parasite intensities fluctuated with the rise and fall in temperature through the year, with an autumn high and spring low. There was a significantly lower prevalence and mean intensity of G. salaris in Skibotnelva than in Signaldalselva. There were also a lower prevalence and intensity of G. salaris in the older than in the youngest charr. The different history of infection and treatment in the two rivers might be the underlying cause of these observed dissimilarities. The current study indicates that Arctic charr is a good natural host for G. salaris.

Digestive enzymes of chars from seven Austrian lakes have been studied. Trypsin activity ml−1 fluid is proportional to body size but inversely proportional to the amount of food in the digestive tract. The pancreas appears to secrete trypsin ± continuously and the activity measureable in the intestinal fluid seems to depend largely on the gut passage rate. There is no seasonal rhythm of enzyme activity. Amylase activity is very weak. Pepsin activity seems to depend mostly on the dilution of the gastric juice. The results indicate that the steering mechanisms of digestive enzymes in salmonidae are well distinct from other families. This work was part of a PH. D. thesis (Reimer, 1984). Seawater acclimation of diploid (FF) and triploid (F2F) brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis , diploid (AA) Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus , and diploid (FA) and triploid (F2A) hybrids between female brook charr and male Arctic charr was investigated. Triploidization of brook charr and the hybrid did not have any effect on the acclimation. Seawater acclimation of the hybrid was achieved during the experimental period and was comparable to that observed in brook charr. Acclimation could not be ascertained in Arctic charr since the level of cortisol, a stress indicator, was still high at the end of the experiment. No relationship between either length or condition factors and plasma osmolality was observed. Elevated plasma cortisol concentrations in Arctic charr and in diploid or triploid hybrids, both in fresh water and sea water, indicate more favourable rearing conditions for brook charr.

Mitochondrial DNA analysis of a total of 82 individuals from seven Scottish populations of Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus L.) using restriction fragment length polymorphism and direct nucleotide sequencing of the cytochrome b gene revealed little variation within or between populations. One of 19 restriction enzymes showed a polymorphism that was present in three of the seven populations. Only one nucleotide substitution was detected in a 288 base pair segment of the cytochrome b gene examined in 26 fish. Approximately 4% of the mitochondrial genome was surveyed with these complementary procedures.

Anadromous juvenile Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) were caught in the Sila River (66°21'N, 13°10'E, Nordland County, Norway) by use of a fish trap during their migration towards the sea in May/June. The absence of tags (not captured before) and examination of otoliths from sacrificed fish revealed that none of the experimental charr had previously encountered seawater. During 4 days of exposure to seawater, only minor changes in blood plasma osmolality, and blood plasma concentrations of Na+, Cl- and Mg2+ were detected. An increase in Na+-K+-ATPase activity was measured during the exposure period. These results verified that first-time migrants exhibit hypoosmoregulatory capacity similar to that of smoltified Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Accordingly, the Arctic charr first-time migratory behaviour, including late descent and a possible stay within an estuary, cannot be taken as evidence of a poorly developed seawater tolerance.

Animals with determinate growth have shown little variation in individual growth patterns, but similar analyses for animals with indeterminate growth have been lacking. We analysed the amount of phenotypic variation in growth patterns across ages among individuals of a hatchery-based population of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, Salmonidae, using the infinite-dimensional model and including the effects of group size structure. There was little phenotypic variation in growth trajectories: individuals that were small (in relation to the mean) early in life were among the smallest 2.5 years later. If the genetic variation reflects phenotypic variation, not much evolutionary change can be expected. Our results show that there are ecological conditions that determine the strong covariation of size across ages, most likely size-related dominance behaviour, which can mask the true variation of growth patterns. Thus, social interactions can have strong evolutionary effects on traits not directly involved in the behavioural interactions.

The role of environmental factors in the regulation of sub-annual increment formation in fish otoliths appears to differ markedly between species. To examine the periodicity of primary increment formation in the otoliths of O + Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), and the effects of temperature, and photoperiod on their formation, fish were held under controlled environmental conditions. Primary growth increments were found in the otoliths of fish held at constant temperature (18° C) and at ambient temperature [fluctuating with a circadian and circannual rhythm (4–18° C)]. Consistent and significant disruptions in increment formation occurred however, in experimental groups subjected to rapid change from ambient photoperiod to a 6L: 6D photo-period for 96 h. Disruptions in increment formation were also observed immediately following transportation of fish between holding facilities and following disease treatment. The number of otolith increments formed in fish held on an ambient photoperiod regime, correlated closely with time elapsed in days since checkmark formation ( r = 0.989, P ≤0.001) in fish sampled sequentially over a period of 10 to 105 days. Thus we demonstrate that under conditions of ambient photoperiod, primary increments are formed daily.

The habitat and diet choice and the infection (prevalence and abundance) of trophically transmitted parasites were compared in Arctic charr and brown trout living sympatrically in two lakes in northern Norway. Arctic charr were found in all main lake habitats, whereas the brown trout were almost exclusively found in the littoral zone. In both lakes the parasite fauna reflected the niche segregation between trout and charr. Surface insects were most common in the diet of trout, but transmit few parasites, and accordingly the brown trout had a relatively low diversity and abundance of parasites. Parasites transmitted by benthic prey such as Gammarus and insect larva, were common in both salmonid host species. Copepod transmitted parasites were much more common in Arctic charr, as brown trout did not include zooplankton in their diets. Parasite species that may use small fish as transport hosts, were far more abundant in piscivorous fish, especially brown trout. The seasonal dynamics in parasite infection were also consistent with the developments in the diet throughout the year. The study demonstrates that the structure of parasite communities of charr and the trout is highly dependent on shifts in habitat and diet of their hosts both on an annual base and through the ontogeny, in addition to the observed niche segregation between the two salmonid species.

The chief objective was to determine the critical thermal limits for alevins, fry and parr of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus , (L.) from four races living in Windermere (northwest England). The experimental fish were reared in a hatchery but were the progeny of wild parents. As comparisons between tethal temperatures at four acclimation temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20° C) revealed few significant racial differences, the data were pooled to estimate the lethal values for survival over 7 days (incipient lethal temperature) and over only 10 min (ultimate lethal temperature) for each life stage. Upper lethal values increased with acclimation temperatures for alevins but this effect was negligible for fry and parr, Alevins were generally less tolerant than fry and parr at lower, but not higher, acclimation temperatures; e.g. after acclimation at 5° C, mean upper ultimate values were 23·3, 25·1 and 25·7° C and mean upper incipient values were 18·7, 21·5 and 21·5° C for alevins, fry and parr respectively; after acclimation at 20° C, mean upper ultimate and incipient values were 26·2, 26·1 and 26·6° C and 20·8, 20·8 and 21·6° C for alevins, fry and parr respectively. The area of the temperature tolerance polygon (expressed as ° C2) for juvenile Arctic charr is amongst the lowest recorded for salmonids; being 409, 439 and 461° C2 for alevins, fry and parr respectively. These low values are due to lower upper tolerance limits, not high lower tolerance limits; the latter being close to 0° C (<1°C for parr and fry, <0·3° C for alevins) at all acclimation temperatures. Arctic charr are therefore amongst the least resistant of salmonids to high temperatures but probably the most resistant to low temperatures.

This study evaluated mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation in a 552-bp fragment of the control region of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) by analyzing 159 individuals from 83 populations throughout the entire range of the complex. A total of 89 (16.1%) nucleotide positions were polymorphic, and these defined 63 haplotypes. Phylogenetic analyses supported the monophyly of the complex and assigned the observed haplotypes to five geographic regions that may be associated with different glacial refugia. Most notably, a formerly defined major evolutionary lineage (S. a. erythrinus) ranging from North America across the Arctic archipelago to the Eurasian continent has now been partitioned into the Arctic group and the newly identified Siberian group. The Beringian group, formed entirely by specimens assigned to S. malma (Dolly Varden), encompassed the area formerly assigned to S. a. taranetzi. The latter, due to a unique haplotype, became the basal member of the Arctic group. Overall, the S. alpinus complex reflects divergent evolutionary groups coupled with shallow intergroup differentiation, also indicated by an analysis of molecular variance that attributed 73.7% (P < 0.001) of the total genetic variance among groups. Time estimates, based on sequence divergence, suggest a separation of the major phylogeographic groups during early to mid-Pleistocene. In contrast, colonization of most of today's range started relatively recently, most likely late Pleistocene during the last retreat of ice sheets some 10,000-20,000 years ago. This time scale obviously is too shallow for detecting significant variation on a smaller scale using mtDNA markers. However, other studies using nuclear microsatellite DNA variation strongly suggested ongoing evolution within groups by revealing strong population-genetic substructuring and restricted gene flow among populations. Thus, Arctic charr could serve as a model organism to investigate the linkage between historical and contemporary components of phylogeographic structuring in fish, and, with a global perspective of the distribution of genetic variation as a framework, meaningful comparisons of charr studies at a smaller geographic scale will now be possible.

  • 1.1. Freshwater-resident Arctic charr acclimated for 2 months at 8°C, 15% were divided into four experimental groups in July and exposed to 1 and 8°C in 15 and 34% salinity.
  • 2.2. Only slight changes in gill Na-K-ATPase activity, blood plasma osmolality and blood plasma concentrations of Cl and Mg2+ were found for the fish exposed to 1 or 8°C in brackish water.
  • 3.3. When exposed to sea-water at 8°C, an increase in osmolality and in concentrations of Cl and Mg2+ took place during the first 2–3 days, after which it levelled off.
  • 4.4. If exposed to sea-water at 1°C, however, marked increases were found for all parameters measured and all the fish were dead within 5 days of exposure.
  • 5.5. These results show that freshwater-resident Arctic charr—if acclimated to brackish water—can survive in sea-water during summer if the environmental temperature is not too low.

Recent studies have demonstrated that Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus ) exhibit higher growth rates when held at high stocking densities. It has been argued that these increased growth rates are a result of decreased social interactions at the increased densities. The current study was designed to test this hypothesis by examining: (1) the frequency of agonistic interactions, (2) the proportion of time spent swimming and (3) growth rates among groups of young of the year Arctic charr held at different stocking densities. It was found that charr reared at higher densities exhibited significantly higher mean weights and lengths than those at the lower densities. The behavioural observations revealed that charr initiated significantly fewer agonistic interactions and spent a significantly greater amount of time shoaling at high densities than charr held at the medium or low densities. It is argued that these behavioural responses may serve to lower energy expenditures, resulting in the increased growth rates.

Synopsis Extensive upstream migration of landlocked Arctic charr during spring floods was recorded in several tributaries of an oligotrophic lake in north-west Sweden. Migration was confined to a period of about two weeks and residence in most creeks was of short duration. Only fish migrating to two small productive lakes remained in the new habitat over the summer. Repeated annual migrations were only recorded in the creek leading to these lakes and no straying was observed among repeat migrants. Water temperatures provided the primary cues for initiation and direction of migration, although an ability to detect productive habitats by odour was indicated. Creek size, feeding opportunities during migration and conspeeific odour were subordinate guiding factors.
