Behavioral isolation is a common and potent mechanism of reproductive isolation. Determining the extent to which behavioral isolation varies with environmental conditions is critical to understanding speciation and the maintenance of species boundaries. Here, we tested the effect of salinity on behavioral isolation (female species recognition, male–male competition, and male species recognition) between two closely related killifish (Lucania goodei and L. parva) that differ in salinity tolerance. We performed no‐choice assays and behavioral trials where males could compete and court females in fresh water (0 ppt) and brackish water (15 ppt). We found high levels of behavioral isolation that did not vary as a function of salinity. In behavioral trials, male species recognition of females was strong and asymmetric between the two species. Lucania goodei males preferred conspecifics and rarely courted or mated with L. parva females. Lucania parva males preferred conspecifics but readily courted and mated with L. goodei females. This asymmetry matches previously documented asymmetries in hybrid offspring fitness. Crosses between L. parva males and L. goodei females produce fully viable/fertile hybrids, but crosses between L. goodei males and L. parva females produce males with reduced fertility. Hence, behavioral isolation may have evolved in part due to reinforcement.  相似文献

Synopsis This is the second of three papers devoted to the interpretation of morphological development in altricial and precocial species within the genus Lucania. The focus of this paper was the early life history of the bluefin killifish,Lucania goodei. Reproductively mature specimens were collected in the run below Newport Spring, north of St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Florida. These specimens were transported to the laboratory, where they served as brood stock for specimens described in this study. Offspring were reared under controlled conditions and were described according to the theory of saltatory ontogeny, which gives a sampling design based on morphological, rather than chronological, progression. The morphological development of these offspring is described on the basis of detailed illustrations, photomicrographs, and measurements of mensural and meristic characters. This account of early ontogeny, in combination with a corresponding study on the early ontogeny of the rainwater killifish,L. parva (Crawford & Balon 1994a), establishes the empirical basis for an altricial-precocial life history model (Crawford & Balon 1994b).  相似文献

Cryptic coloration reduces the ability of predators to detect prey, but the plasticity of this defense varies. Some organisms possess static and permanent cryptic coloration, whereas in other species color changes may be induced. Depending upon the species, induced color changes may be reversible or irreversible. In this study, we examined a subtle, rapid, and reversible crypsis in which small fish exhibit muted changes in brightness to match varying substrates in clear spring water. In the laboratory, we visually measured the changes in brightness, using a ten-point brightness scale, of five abundant small species in our study spring. Two species, Lucania goodei and Heterandria formosa, exhibited no change, but the other three species exhibited changes in brightness to match background brightness. Two species, Gambusia holbrooki and Poecilia latipinna, exhibited only slight shifts, whereas Lucania parva exhibited relatively large shifts in brightness and color pattern—from virtually white to tan interspersed with dark-brown bands. In the field, L. parva also exhibited significant shifts in brightness and color pattern, both when swimming freely and when enclosed in an open-bottomed cage. These results suggest that rapid cryptic changes in brightness may augment other forms of defense in small vulnerable fish.  相似文献

Adaptation to different environments can directly and indirectly generate reproductive isolation between species. Bluefin killifish (Lucania goodei) and rainwater killifish (L. parva) are sister species that have diverged across a salinity gradient and are reproductively isolated by habitat, behavioural, extrinsic and intrinsic post‐zygotic isolation. We asked if salinity adaptation contributes indirectly to other forms of reproductive isolation via linked selection and hypothesized that low recombination regions, such as sex chromosomes or chromosomal rearrangements, might facilitate this process. We conducted QTL mapping in backcrosses between L. parva and L. goodei to explore the genetic architecture of salinity tolerance, behavioural isolation and intrinsic isolation. We mapped traits relative to a chromosome that has undergone a centric fusion in L. parva (relative to L. goodei). We found that the sex locus appears to be male determining (XX‐XY), was located on the fused chromosome and was implicated in intrinsic isolation. QTL associated with salinity tolerance were spread across the genome and did not overly co‐localize with regions associated with behavioural or intrinsic isolation. This preliminary analysis of the genetic architecture of reproductive isolation between Lucania species does not support the hypothesis that divergent natural selection for salinity tolerance led to behavioural and intrinsic isolation as a by‐product. Combined with previous studies in this system, our work suggests that adaptation as a function of salinity contributes to habitat isolation and that reinforcement may have contributed to the evolution of behavioural isolation instead, possibly facilitated by linkage between behavioural isolation and intrinsic isolation loci on the fused chromosome.  相似文献

Reinforcement can occur when maladaptive hybridization in sympatry favors the evolution of conspecific preferences and target traits that promote behavioral isolation (BI). In many systems, enhanced BI is due to increased female preference for conspecifics. In others, BI is driven by male preference, and in other systems both sexes exert preferences. Some of these patterns can be attributed to classic sex-specific costs and benefits of preference. Alternatively, sex differences in conspecific preference can emerge due to asymmetric postzygotic isolation (e.g., hybrid offspring from female A × male B have lower fitness than hybrid offspring from female B × male A), which can lead to asymmetric BI (e.g., female A and male B are less likely to mate than female B and male A). Understanding reinforcement requires understanding how conspecific preferences evolve in sympatry. Yet, estimating conspecific preferences can be difficult when both sexes are choosy. In this study, we use Lucania killifish to test the hypothesis that patterns of reinforcement are driven by asymmetric postzygotic isolation between species. If true, we predicted that sympatric female Lucania goodei and sympatric male L. parva should have lower levels of BI compared with their sympatric counterparts, as they produce hybrid offspring with the highest fitness. To address the problem of measuring BI when both sexes are choosy, we inferred the contribution to BI of each partner using assays where one sex in the mating pair comes from an allopatric population with potentially low preference, whereas the other comes from a sympatric population with high preference. For one hybrid cross direction, we found that both female L. parva and male L. goodei have high contributions to BI in sympatry. In the other hybrid cross direction, we found that only female L. goodei contribute to BI. Sympatric male L. parva readily engaged in hybrid spawnings with allopatric L. goodei females. These results indicate that both asymmetric postzygotic isolation and the traditional sex-specific costs to preference likely affect the nature of selection on conspecific preferences and target traits.  相似文献

We identified four new polymorphic microsatellite loci in bluefin killifish (Lucania goodei) and five loci in yellow bullheads (Ameiurus natalis). We screened 400 killifish from 20 populations and 180 bullheads from nine populations, finding a high degree of polymorphism (nine to 54 alleles per locus; average expected heterozygosity 0.678–0.976). We found no evidence for linkage disequilibrium. Three of the loci found in bluefin killifish show heterozygote deficiency; the other loci do not deviate from Hardy–Weinberg expectations.  相似文献

The cambial activity in Nerium oleander L. in Genoa. – The cambial activity in Nerium oleander L. is observed in order to compare the increasing rhythm of a specimen cultivated in Genoa with the rhythm of spontaneous and cultivated specimens growing in Puglia and Lucania, previously studied by other authors.

In Genoa Nerium oleander, a strongly scleromorphus species, has a nearly continuous growth activity, as already remarked at Policoro. However in Genoa a summer pause can be observed which is perhaps connected with the exceptional summer draught which occurred during the period of our research.

It can be said that the cambial activity, potentially continuous in Nerium, is modified by the environmental conditions.  相似文献

Under field conditions, breeding male bluefin killifish, Lucania goodei, have been observed aggressively defending territories from other breeding males, non-breeding females, and minnows (mainly Notropis harperi). We performed an aquarium experiment to test whether male aggression serves to protect newly deposited eggs from predation. We allowed a male and a female to spawn in a yarn mop, removed the female, and exposed the eggs to one of four treatments (spawning male present, two minnows present, spawning mal+two minnows present, no adult fish present). Mops were censused daily for seven days. Egg predation rates were highest in the male+minnows and male only treatments. Egg predation rates in the male+minnows treatment did not differ from the predicted predation rate (sum of male only and minnows only treatments). Hence, there is no evidence for male parental care in L. goodei. In addition, we compared the egg predation rates (filial cannibalism) between males of 3 different color morphs and found no evidence for differential egg cannibalism.  相似文献

A genetic colour polymorphism is present in bluefin killifish Lucania goodei, where red and yellow anal‐fin morphs coexist in clear springs, but the source of balancing selection is unknown. In a field study, vertical distributions did not differ between the morphs and there was little evidence that light environments differed qualitatively over the 200 cm at which fish were collected. A greenhouse study showed that both morphs preferred to spawn at shallow depths and hence vertical distribution and spawning site choice are unlikely to explain the maintenance of the colour polymorphism.  相似文献

Phaeomonas parva gen. et sp. nov., a marine photosynthetic stramenopile from oceanic water near the Caroline Islands, is described. Cells are naked and spherical to ovoid. The alga is motile with two laterally inserted flagella during the light period, whereas during the dark period, it absorbs the flagella and rounds up. The anterior (immature, No. 2) long flagellum possesses tubular tripartite mastigonemes. The posterior (mature, No. 1) short flagellum is smooth and has autofluorescence at the base. The cupshaped, yellowish‐brown chloroplast occupies the posterior half of the cell, and a pyrenoid occurs in the inner cavity of the cup‐shaped chloroplast. The flagellar apparatus has several unusual features. Two basal plates and a two‐gyred proximal helix in the flagellar transitional region may suggest that P. parva is related to the Pelagophyceae, Dictyochophyceae and Sulcochrysis biplastida, a photosynthetic stramenopile of uncertain taxonomic position. The R3 and R4 roots form a loop that resembles phagotrophic chrysophytes. However, this resemblance is superficial because Phaeomonas is not phagotrophic, its R3 root has a different number of microtubules and its R3 root does not split to form a food‐uptake mouth. Phaeomonas has a ‘bypassing root’, which is found only with the Phaeophyceae, Giraudyopsis stellifera (Chrysomerophyceae), and Ankylochrysis lutea (probably a member of the Pelagophyceae). The taxonomic position of P. parva could not be determined solely from ultrastructural features. However, molecular phylogeny and biochemical analyses (published separately) strongly supported a relationship between P. parva and four other monotypic strameno‐piles, Glossomastix, Pinguiochrysis, Pinguiococcus and Polypodochrysis. Although these algae are morphologically distinct, they have unusually high percentages of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially eicosapentoic acid. This unusual assemblage of stramenopiles is classified in a new class, the Pinguiophyceae (published separately), and P. parva is its only biflagellate member.  相似文献

Spatial variation in lighting environments frequently leads to population variation in colour patterns, colour preferences and visual systems. Yet lighting conditions also vary diurnally, and many aspects of visual systems and behaviour vary over this time scale. Here, we use the bluefin killifish (Lucania goodei) to compare how diurnal variation and habitat variation (clear versus tannin-stained water) affect opsin expression and the preference to peck at different-coloured objects. Opsin expression was generally lowest at midnight and dawn, and highest at midday and dusk, and this diurnal variation was many times greater than variation between habitats. Pecking preference was affected by both diurnal and habitat variation but did not correlate with opsin expression. Rather, pecking preference matched lighting conditions, with higher preferences for blue at noon and for red at dawn/dusk, when these wavelengths are comparatively scarce. Similarly, blue pecking preference was higher in tannin-stained water where blue wavelengths are reduced. In conclusion, L. goodei exhibits strong diurnal cycles of opsin expression, but these are not tightly correlated with light intensity or colour. Temporally variable pecking preferences probably result from lighting environment rather than from opsin production. These results may have implications for the colour pattern diversity observed in these fish.  相似文献

Space-for-time substitution is often used in predictive models because long-term time-series data are not available. Critics of this method suggest factors other than the target driver may affect ecosystem response and could vary spatially, producing misleading results. Monitoring data from the Florida Everglades were used to test whether spatial data can be substituted for temporal data in forecasting models. Spatial models that predicted bluefin killifish (Lucania goodei) population response to a drying event performed comparably and sometimes better than temporal models. Models worked best when results were not extrapolated beyond the range of variation encompassed by the original dataset. These results were compared to other studies to determine whether ecosystem features influence whether space-for-time substitution is feasible. Taken in the context of other studies, these results suggest space-for-time substitution may work best in ecosystems with low beta-diversity, high connectivity between sites, and small lag in organismal response to the driver variable.  相似文献

The genetic variation at two marker loci in three populations of the monogynous ant Lasius niger was used to analyze the importance of relatedness structure to sex-investment ratios in sexuals produced by colonies living in different resource conditions. From a resource-rich monoculture to a population in a resource-limited environment, dry weight investment in queens decreased from female-biased (0.76) to equality with male investment (Boomsma et al., 1982). The investment ratios in sexuals expected from the estimated relatedness ratios, resulting from kin-selection theory (Trivers and Hare, 1976), were in good agreement with the observed ratios in all populations. This indicated that the workers can capitalize on the asymmetry in relatedness, opposing the queen's interest, despite the contrast in environmental conditions in the different populations. This asymmetry, however, almost disappeared in the marginal population, due to a high frequency of double mating and worker production of males, resulting in a much reduced queen-worker conflict. We suggest that different levels of polyandry might be favored at different points of the resource gradient, with the sex ratio secondarily depending on these polyandry levels. As there was no population subdivision or spatial structure within the populations, group-selection and local-mate-competition models cannot account for the observed female-biased ratios, whereas they were rather accurately predicted by kin-selection theory.  相似文献

Here, we investigate the germination response to environmental cues of Sisymbrella dentata (L.) O.E. Schulz, an annual endemic to Sicily living in Mediterranean Temporary Ponds (MTP), a vulnerable ecosystem.
  • Germination of the only two known populations, Gurrida and Pantano, was assessed over a broad range of conditions to understand the role of temperatures, nitrate, hormones (abscisic acid – ABA and gibberellins – GA) and after‐ripening in dormancy release in this species.
  • Seed germination responsiveness varied between the two populations, with seeds from Gurrida germinating under a narrower range of conditions. Overall, this process in S. dentata consisted of testa and endosperm rupture as two sequential events, influenced by ABA and GA biosynthesis. Nitrate addition caused an earlier testa rupture, after‐ripening broadened the thermal conditions that allow germination, and alternating temperatures significantly promoted germination of non‐after‐ripened seeds.
  • Primary dormancy in S. dentata seeds likely allows this plant to form a persistent seed bank that is responsive to specific environmental cues characteristic of MTP habitats.

Relationships between growth rate and the degree of individual heterozygosity at ten nuclear RFLP loci were examined in two populations of the Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, from northern Norway. A highly significant positive correlation was observed between growth rate and DNA heterozygosity in one population (Balsfjord) but not in the other (Barents Sea). Our results provide support for an important prediction of the associative overdominance hypothesis that heterozygosity-fitness correlations can be detected at neutral genetic markers and suggest that environmental conditions might play a dominant role in the manifestation of the correlation.  相似文献

Studies focusing on gametophytic competition have focused on differences in pollen performance (e.g., pollen germination rate and pollen tube growth rate) among donors in order to examine genetic sources of variation in siring success among them. Donors that produce the fastest growing pollen tubes are expected to fertilize more ovules relative to donors with slow growing pollen tubes under conditions of gametophytic competition. However, the performance of pollen in the field is known to be influenced by environmental conditions in addition to the genotype of donor plants. This field study of Faramea occidentalis was conducted to: (1) determine the effect of environmental conditions during pollination on pollen performance; (2) measure differences among pollen donors in pollen performance; (3) determine if the pollen of different donors responds differently to a variety of environmental conditions surrounding pollinated flowers; and (4) measure differences among pollen recipients in pollen performance. Single-donor crosses were made between four pollen donors and four pollen recipients under a variety of environmental conditions. Pollen performance was then quantified as the growth rate of the fastest pollen tube, the mean pollen tube growth rate, and by a pollen germination index. Pollination environment (the environment surrounding a pollinated flower) and recipient significantly affected all three measures of pollen performance. Pollen donors did not differ overall in pollen performance. However, there was significant among-donor variation in two of the five pollination environment conditions. Future studies of variation in relative siring success may benefit by considering pollination environment in addition to donor and recipient identity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Lagenophrys anticthos n. sp. resembles L. aegleae Mouchet-Bennati; however, the two species are distinguished from one another by differences in the structure of the lorica aperture. Similarities in the shape of the lorica and macronucleus indicate a close phylogenetic relationship between L. anticthos and L. aegleae. The size of L. anticthos varies greatly within a population, and it is unclear whether this can be attributed to genetic differences or to environmental factors. In L. anticthos, variation in the form of the lips of the lorica aperture is correlated with variation in size. The brown, iron-rich incrustations observed around the loricae of L. aegleae by an earlier worker were not seen, indicating that the incrustations do not play a role in the symbiosis between L. aegleae and its host as was previously thought.  相似文献

We documented patterns of age-structured biotic interactions in four mesocosm experiments with an assemblage of three species of co-occurring fishes from the Florida Everglades, the eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki), sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna), and bluefin killifish (Lucania goodei). These species were chosen based on their high abundance and overlapping diets. Juvenile mosquitofish and sailfin mollies, at a range of densities matching field estimates, were maintained in the presence of adult mosquitofish, sailfin mollies, and bluefin killifish to test for effects of competition and predation on juvenile survival and growth. The mesocosms held 1,200 l of water and all conditions were set to simulate those in Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (ENP), USA. We placed floating mats of periphyton and bladderwort in each tank in standard volumes that matched field values to provide cover and to introduce invertebrate prey. Of 15 possible intra- and interspecific age-structured interactions, we found 7 to be present at the densities of these fish found in Shark River Slough marshes. Predation by adult mosquitofish on juvenile fish, including conspecifics, was the strongest effect observed. We also observed growth limitation in mosquitofish and sailfin molly juveniles from intra- and interspecific competition. When maintained at high densities, juvenile mosquitofish changed their diets to include more cladocerans and fewer chironomid larvae relative to low densities. We estimated size-specific gape limitation by adult mosquitofish when consuming juvenile mosquitofish and sailfin mollies. At high field densities, intraspecific competition might prolong the time period when juveniles are vulnerable to predation by adult mosquitofish. These results suggest that path analysis, or other techniques used to document food-web interactions, must include age-specific roles of these fishes.  相似文献

To elucidate the mechanisms of the adaptive advantages of polyploidy, there is a need to identify physiological traits that participate in the success of polyploids. We studied selected photosynthetic characteristics, stomatal density, and specific leaf area of three ploidy levels (2n = 4x, 5x, 6x) of the geophyte Allium oleraceum that partially differ in their ecological niches. Although the cytotypes were on average similar with regard to most of the measured photosynthetic traits, the hexaploids showed more rapid initial photosynthetic induction and a tendency for a higher maximum photosynthetic rate per unit area. The stomatal density was not affected by ploidy, though the specific leaf area was reduced for the hexaploids compared to the other cytotypes. A lower intracytotype variation was found for most of the studied photosynthetic and anatomical traits for the hexaploids compared to the large variation found within other cytotypes. A comparison of the photosynthetic traits between the cytotypes showed that the ecological differentiation between cytotypes is only weakly related to the characteristics of their photosynthetic apparatus. However, contrasting ranges of variability in the measured traits between the cytotypes can be related to previously observed differences between cytotypes with regard to the ranges of intracytotype genetic variation, genome size variation, and niche breadth. A higher variability of photosynthetic traits in tetraploids and pentaploids may be related to the existence of a spectrum of types adapted to different environmental conditions. Hexaploids may represent a recently formed cytotype adapted to open environmental conditions.  相似文献
