Cabbage root fly ( Delia brassicae ) egg-laying around radish plants ranging in age from newly emerged seedlings to plants with flowering shoots was studied in the field and laboratory. The attractiveness of radish changed with age, one peak in egg-laying occurring just before plants were of marketable size and further peaks as they produced flowering shoots. The pattern of egg-laying was similar for the six radish cultivars tested, both in the field and laboratory, irrespective of whether flies did or did not have a choice of plants of different ages. At any one age, there was no correlation between egg-laying and plant size. Selection within radish cultivars for the extremes of the range of egg-laying preference appeared to alter the cycle of attractiveness of different radish stocks to cabbage root fly, the response being influenced by environmental conditions.  相似文献

First generation progenies selected from four radish cultivars on the basis of their attractiveness to ovipositing cabbage root fly in the laboratory were compared in the same environment. There were significant differences between and within cultivars in their attractiveness for egg-laying, indicating that genetic variation existed and that selection had effected a heritable change. However, inconsistencies between experiments indicated that other, as yet unquantified, factors were compounded with the heritable component of non-preference resistance. There was no evidence to suggest that seed weight, leaf area, or hypocotyl size affected the attractiveness of the plants. The effects of eliminating any choice between selections was investigated in the laboratory by exposing 4-wk-old ‘high’ and ‘low’ preference selections of cv. Asmer Tip Top to the pest for 6 days. Three times as many eggs were laid on ‘high’ than on ‘low’ preference selections, indicating that the heritable non-preference resistance to cabbage root fly in Asmer Tip Top was maintained when no choice was offered to the flies, an essential requirement for ‘resistant’ cultivars in the field.  相似文献

Several plant traits control plant–insect interactions and shape host range of herbivorous insects according to their degree of dietary specialization. Understanding how plant species diversity influences herbivore infestations is of interest for the development of alternative crop protection strategies. In a pest management context, an appropriate selection of plants can modify pest distribution at the field scale. To develop a ‘push–pull’ strategy against the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum, we conducted a field study to both determine which plants exhibit contrasted pest infestation levels and to evaluate their influence on egg predation activity. Our field experiment reveals that infestation levels of brassicaceous plants by the cabbage root fly in the field can vary considerably according to plant genotype and species, while the number of predated eggs is only slightly affected by plant species. Olfactometry studies carried out under laboratory conditions revealed that plants harbouring the highest number of eggs in the field were also highly attractive, suggesting that olfactory stimuli are responsible, at least partially, for the differential infestation levels observed in the field. In a ‘push–pull’ context, this study demonstrates that different brassicaceous plants could be used to redistribute cabbage root flies in broccoli crops without compromising herbivore control by natural enemies. In addition, the importance of plant volatiles for infestation levels suggests a potential for developing a semiochemically assisted ‘push–pull’ system in which trap plants would be enhanced by synthetic release of attractive compounds.

A laboratory method for testing cruciferous plants for their non-preference resistance to cabbage root fly is described. Test plants were fully randomized on a turntable inside a large chamber containing cabbage root flies. The apparatus was housed in a controlled environment room. The root-fly eggs, laid in the sand surrounding test plants, were extracted using a flask flotation method which was quicker and more efficient than the stirring technique which it superseded. Two batches of plants were tested alternately, one being exposed to the flies, while the other was sampled for eggs. Each batch of test plants received three 1-day exposures to egg-laying, their positions within the test chamber being changed for each exposure to ensure complete randomization. This test method gave highly consistent results and indicated that there were differences in the flies' preference both between cultivars of radish and cauliflower and for individual plants within cultivars. Plants representing the extremes of preferences discovered in the two crops were saved for further study. It was not possible to correlate seed weight, time of seedling emergence, foliage surface area, or hypocotyl attitude in relation to soil level, with the egg-laying preference of the cabbage root flies.  相似文献

Controlled atmosphere storage of winter white cabbage   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In four laboratory experiments and five commercial scale trials carried out between 1977 and 1979, five cvs of winter white cabbage were stored at 0–2 °C for 29–43 wk in controlled atmospheres (C A) consisting of c. 5–6% CO2, 3% O2 and the remainder N., or in air. The incidence of rots caused by Botrytis cinerea was reduced and the incidence of ‘pepper-spotting’ (a non-microbial leaf necrosis disorder) was reduced or eliminated by storage in CA. Storage and trimming weight losses were lower and the recoveries of trimmed cabbage suitable for marketing or processing up to 22% higher in cabbage stored in CA than in those stored in air. Sensory assessments of four cvs tested indicated that CA-stored cabbages retained their green colour, crisp texture and fresh flavour better than the corresponding air-stored samples.  相似文献

The effect of the auxin physiological analogues analogues 1-[2-chloroethoxycarbonylmethyl]-4-naphthalenesulfonic acid calcium salt (TA-12) and 1-[2-dimethylaminoethoxicarbonylmethyl]naphthalene chlormethylate (TA-14) TA-14 on different winter rapeseed cultivars were studied with regard to their autumnal growth, cold hardening, accumulation of the stress-protective metabolites proline and saccharide in plant organs: apical bud and root collum, winter survival and productivity formation. The test cultivars were the very early ‘Libea’ medium-resistant to wintering, the medium-early ‘Sunday’ resistant to wintering, the medium–early ‘Valesca’ less than medium resistant to wintering, and the early ‘Hornet’ (hybrid) tolerant to stress growth conditions. During the period of cold hardening in natural field conditions, the test compounds TA-12 (2 mM) and TA-14 (4 mM), applied to different winter rapeseed cultivars at the 4th–5th leaf stage, stimulate accumulation proline and saccharides (sucrose and glucose) in the root collum and apical bud tissues, influence plants acclimation to cold, overwintering and productivity formation. Compounds TA-12 and especially TA-14 produced a stable effect on seed and crude fat yield in cvs. ‘Hornet’, ‘Sunday’ and ‘Libea’. The genotypic peculiarities of a cultivar and the meteorological conditions of the plant vegetation period were the factors that mostly determined fatty acid content in seed oil.  相似文献

Temporal changes in the pre‐ and post‐alighting responses of mated female diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), to two species of Brassica (Brassicaceae) host plants induced by larval feeding were studied using olfactometer and oviposition assays. Females displayed strong olfactory and oviposition preferences for herbivore‐induced common cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L. cv. sugarloaf) plants over intact plants; these preferences decreased with time and disappeared by the 7th day after induction. In herbivore‐induced common cabbage plants, eggs were clustered near feeding damage on the younger leaves (leaves 5–7), whereas in intact plants, eggs were clustered on the stem and lower leaves (leaves 1–4) . However, as the time interval between larval feeding and oviposition increased, more eggs were laid on the lower leaves of induced plants. This demonstrates a change in egg distribution from the pattern associated with induced plants to that associated with intact plants. In contrast, females displayed strong olfactory and oviposition preferences for intact Chinese cabbage [Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis (Lour.) Hanelt cv. Wombok] plants over induced plants; these preferences decreased with time and disappeared by the 5th day after induction. More eggs were laid on the upper leaves (leaves 4–6) than on the lower leaves (leaves 1–3) of intact Chinese cabbage plants at first, but the distribution changed over time until there were no significant differences in the egg count between upper and lower leaves by the 4th day post induction. For both host plant species, pre‐alighting responses of moths were reliable indicators of post‐alighting responses on the first 2 days post induction. The results suggest that temporal changes in a plant's profile (chemical or otherwise) following herbivory may influence attractiveness to an insect herbivore and be accompanied by changes in olfactory and oviposition preferences.  相似文献

Abstract 1 The feeding preference of vine weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus (Fabricius), adults for foliage from 21 commercial cultivars of strawberries is investigated using binary choice tests with leaf disks, using ‘Honeoye’ as a standard against which all other cultivars are compared. ‘Delmarvel’, ‘Idea’, ‘Lester’, ‘Primetime’ and ‘Seneca’ are not preferred. 2 Variation in leaf nitrogen content is correlated with feeding preference, but does not explain all the variation, because outliers exist for both preferred and nonpreferred cultivars. 3 Removal of leaf hairs with adhesive tape permits their role in deterrence to be evaluated. Eight of the 21 cultivars have deterrent leaf hairs. Paradoxically, some highly preferred cultivars (e.g. ‘Latestar’ and ‘Tristar’) have deterrent leaf hairs, and four of the five nonpreferred cultivars lack significantly deterrent leaf hairs. 4 The 21 tested cultivars do not differ in their suitability for vine weevil larval development. 5 Differences in cultivar susceptibility to vine weevil in the field may involve interactions between the palatability and nutritional value of foliage, which influence fecundity and egg placement, and the tolerance of strawberry plants to larval feeding, determined by root biomass. The nonpreference traits found in the foliage of commercial cultivars of strawberry are present by chance. Accordingly, further selective breeding to enhance strawberry varietal tolerance to vine weevils may be possible.  相似文献

Knowledge of insect behaviour is essential for accurately interpreting studies of diversification and to develop diversified agroecosystems that have a reliable pest‐suppressive effect. In this study, we investigated the egg‐laying behaviour of the turnip root fly, Delia floralis (Fall.) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), in an intercrop‐monoculture system. We examined both the main effect of intercropping and the effect on oviposition in the border zone between a cabbage monoculture [Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata (Brassicaceae)] and a cabbage‐red clover intercropping system [Trifolium pratense L. (Fabaceae)]. To investigate the border‐effect, oviposition was measured along a transect from the border between the treatments to the centre of experimental plots. Intercropping reduced the total egg‐laying of D. floralis with 42% in 2003 and 55% in 2004. In 2004, it was also found that the spatial distribution of eggs within the experimental plots was affected by distance from the adjoining treatment. The difference in egg‐laying between monoculture and intercropping was most pronounced close to the border, where egg‐laying was 68% lower on intercropped plants. This difference in egg numbers decreased gradually up to a distance of 3.5 m from the border, where intercropped plants had 43% fewer eggs than the corresponding monocultured plants. The reason behind this oviposition pattern is most likely that flies in intercropped plots have a higher probability of entering the monoculture if they are close to the border than if they are in the centre of a plot. When entering the monoculture, flies can pursue their egg‐laying behaviour without being disrupted by the clover. As the final decision to land is visually stimulated, flies could also be attracted to fly from the intercropped plots into the monoculture, where host plants are more visually apparent. Visual cues could also hinder flies in a monoculture from entering an intercropped plot. Other possible patterns of insect attack due to differences in insect behaviour are discussed, as well as the practical application of the results of this study.  相似文献

Amino acids (AA) as metal complexing agents have the ability to form relatively stable complexes with zinc (Zn) and thereby increase its availability for plants. In this study, the complexes of Zn(II), [Zn(L–L′)2] [where L–L′ = monoanion of arginine (Arg), glycine (Gly), glutamine (Gln), histidine (His), and methionine (Met)], were synthesized and characterized by different analytical techniques. The results of elemental analysis support the formation of Zn(II)–AA complexes (ZnAAC) with a 2:1 ligand-to-metal molar ratio. The computational results indicated that the AA ligands coordinated to the Zn(II) ion via their nitrogen and oxygen atoms and support the coordination mode obtained from IR spectroscopy. For the first time, the semiempirical calculations were also performed to investigate the passive uptake of ZnAAC by root cells. The proposed transport pathway indicated that ZnAAC can pass via plant root cell wall pores without any strict hindrances. The efficacy of ZnAAC as a Zn source was evaluated for two lettuce cultivars (Lactuca sativa L., cvs. ‘Lollo Bionda’ and ‘Lollo Rossa’) grown in nutrient solution. The results confirmed the higher efficacy of ZnAAC in supplying Zn for lettuce in comparison with ZnSO4. The synthesized ZnAAC also had a stimulating effect on root and shoot growth of both lettuce cultivars. According to the results, ZnAAC can be used as ecofriendly plant growth stimulators and sources of Zn to supply plants with readily available Zn.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.), was deterred from laying eggs on brassica plants with >250 cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), or peach-potato aphid, Myzuspersicae (Sulz.).
2. Flies did not lay on plants infested with >250 aphids.
3. Preparations of (E)-β-farnesene, the aphid alarm pheromone, deterred the flies from laying only at the extremely high dose of 32 mg/plant.
4. Although M. persicae secreted large (1 ng/insect) amounts of alarm pheromone and B. brassicae extremely small (<0.01 ng/insect) amounts, both aphids equally deterred D. radicum from laying.
5. The deterrent effect appeared to result from the aphids physically disturbing the flies during host-plant selection.  相似文献

1. A substantial amount of research on host‐plant selection by insect herbivores is focused around the preference–performance hypothesis (PPH). To date, the majority of studies have primarily considered insects with aboveground life cycles, overlooking insect herbivores that have both aboveground and belowground life stages, for which the PPH could be equally applicable. 2. This study investigated the factors influencing the performance of the root‐feeding vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) larvae and whether this was linked to the oviposition behaviour of the maternal adult living aboveground. 3. Maternal insects feeding aboveground reduced root biomass by 34% and increased root carbon by 4%. Larvae feeding on plants subjected to aboveground herbivory had reduced mass. Irrespective of the presence of maternal herbivory, larval mass was positively correlated with root biomass. 4. Larval mass was also reduced by conspecific larvae, previously feeding on roots (19% reduction). However, the mechanism underpinning this effect remains unclear, as in contrast to maternal herbivory aboveground, prior larval feeding did not significantly affect root biomass or root carbon concentrations. 5. Maternal insects did not distinguish between plants infested with larvae and those that were free of larvae, in terms of their egg‐laying behaviour. Conversely, maternal insects tended to lay eggs on plants with smaller root systems, a behaviour that is likely to negatively affect offspring performance. 6. The PPH is not supported by our findings for the polyphagous vine weevil feeding on the host plant raspberry (Rubus idaeus), and in fact our results suggest that there is the potential for strong parent–offspring conflict in this system.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine host selection by Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov when larvae of its host, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus), fed on Chinese cabbage, Brassica campestris L. ssp. pekinensis and those fed on common cabbage, Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata were provided simultaneously, and to investigate the roles of plant and host volatiles in mediating host selection. When C. plutellae were provided with equal numbers of host larvae on plants of the two species in one arena, the parasitoid parasitized 4- to 15-fold more host larvae on Chinese cabbage than on common cabbage. This preference changed little with host density. However, an experience of searching coupled with an oviposition in a host larva on a leaf of the less-preferred plant, common cabbage, significantly increased the preference for parasitizing host larvae on this plant and resulted in twice as many host larvae parasitized on this plant than on Chinese cabbage. Dual choice tests with a Y-tube olfactometer showed that plant volatiles from Chinese cabbage were more attractive to female C. plutellae than those from common cabbage when plants of both species were either intact or infested. In parallel to the increased parasitism on common cabbage following experience, oviposition in a host larva on this less-preferred plant significantly increased the response to volatiles emanating from that plant. These results indicate that host plants may strongly influence the foraging behaviour of C. plutellae, but their differential attractiveness to the parasitoid may be altered by experience of the parasitoid.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. In holometabolous insects, learning has been demonstrated in both larval and adult stages. Whether learning can be retained through metamorphosis from larva via pupa to adult has long been a subject of debate. The present study is designed to distinguish between preimaginal and imaginal conditioning in the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) using oviposition preference tests on females exposed to various types of learning experiences during immature and adult stages.
2. Cohorts of test insects were reared from egg to pupa on an artificial diet, or on one of two host plants, Chinese cabbage, Brassica campestris L. ssp. pekinensis , and common cabbage, Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata . The ensuing females reared on the three kinds of food showed similar oviposition preference between the two plants. A brief experience of the less preferred host, common cabbage, by adults slightly increased their preference for this plant.
3. Cohorts of test insects were reared from egg to pupa on an artificial diet with or without the addition of a neem-based oviposition deterrent (Neemix® 4.5). Larval feeding experience did not alter oviposition response to the deterrent. However, emergence conditioning and early adult learning, achieved through experience of a residue of the deterrent carried over from the larval food on pupal cuticle and cocoons, altered oviposition preference significantly.
4. The combined results revealed no evidence of preimaginal conditioning in this insect but a strong effect of emergence conditioning and early adult learning on oviposition preference.  相似文献

Two cherry tomato plant cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Miller, cultivars ‘Koko’ and ‘Pepe’) were supplied with high (395 ppm), medium (266 ppm) and low (199 ppm) concentrations of nitrogen to determine the influence of nitrogen fertilization on development, cultivar preference and honeydew production by greenhouse whiteflies, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). The nitrogen, protein, and chlorophyll contents of tomato leaves were higher in the high nitrogen supplied plants than in the medium or low nitrogen supplied plants, but the sugar content showed an inverse relationship. The developmental times of eggs and nymphs decreased as the nitrogen concentrations increased in both cultivars. The preference of T. vaporariorum was compared by counting the number of eggs deposited on leaves in choice and non-choice tests. In the non-choice test, no significant nitrogen treatment effects were observed but the upper plant stratum was preferred for egg laying. In the choice test, there were significant main effects of cultivar and nitrogen concentration. T. vaporariorum laid eggs more on leaves of plants with higher nitrogen at the upper stratum. In both experiments, T. vaporariorum preferred the ‘Koko’ cultivar to the ‘Pepe’ cultivar. The honeydew production of T. vaporariorum nymphs increased with decreasing nitrogen treatment concentrations. The largest honeydew production was detected in the ‘Pepe’ cultivar grown at low nitrogen concentration. It is concluded that cultivar ‘Pepe’ had an advantage over ‘Koko’ in term of T. vaporariorum management program in tomato greenhouses.  相似文献

Zinc deficiency and salinity are well-documented soil problems and often occur simultaneously in cultivated soils. Usually, plants respond to environmental stress factors by activating their antioxidative defense mechanisms. The antioxidative response of wheat genotypes to salinity in relation to Zn nutrition is not well understood. So, we investigated the effect of Zn nutrition on the growth, membrane permeability and sulfhydryl group (–SH groups) content of root cells and antioxidative defense mechanisms of wheat plants exposed to salt stress. In a hydroponic experiment, three bread wheat genotypes (Triticum aestivum L. cvs. Rushan, Kavir, and Cross) with different Zn-deficiency tolerance were exposed to adequate (1 μM Zn) and deficient (no Zn) Zn supply and three salinity levels (0, 60, and 120 mM NaCl). The results obtained showed that adequate Zn nutrition counteracted the detrimental effect of 60 mM NaCl level on the growth of all three wheat genotypes while it had no effect on the root and shoot growth of ‘Rushan’ and ‘Kavir’ at the 120 mM NaCl treatment. At the 0 and 60 mM NaCl treatments, Zn application decreased root membrane permeability while increased –SH group content and root activity of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in ‘Rushan’ and ‘Kavir’. In contrast, Zn had no effect on the root membrane permeability and –SH group content of ‘Rushan’ and ‘Kavir’ exposed to the 120 mM NaCl treatment. At all salinity levels, ‘Cross’ plants supplied with Zn had lower root membrane permeability and higher –SH group content compared to those grown under Zn-deficient conditions. At the 0 and 60 salinity levels, Zn-deficient roots of Kavir and Rushan genotype leaked significantly higher amounts of Fe and K than the Zn-sufficient roots. In contrast, at the 120 mM treatment, Zn application had no effect or slightly increased Fe and K concentration in the root ion leakage of these wheat genotypes. For ‘Cross’, at all salinity levels, Zn-deficient roots leaked significantly higher amounts of Fe and K compared with the Zn-sufficient roots. The differential tolerance to salt stress among wheat genotypes examined in this study was related to their tolerance to Zn-deficiency, –SH group content, and root activity of CAT and SOD. Greater tolerance to salinity of Zn-deficiency tolerant genotype ‘Cross’ is probably associated with its greater antioxidative defense capacity.  相似文献

Resistance and/or susceptibility of several soybean genotypes to soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines, race 3 was investigated. Three, 11, and 4 soybean genotypes were identified as resistant, moderately resistant, and susceptible, respectively. Resistant plants had fewer cysts on the roots and more root nodules, with the converse in susceptible plants. Reduction in yield of six extensively grown soybean cvs in Alabama was from 10 to 56% compared with the north Alabama average; resistant cv. ‘Bedford’ showed a yield loss of 10%. Cyst numbers were negatively correlated with nodule numbers and other agronomic characters. Nodules and other yield components were positively correlated except for non-correlation of nodules and number of pods with plant height in the 1980 experiment.  相似文献

Population dynamics studies in insects mostly focus on a specific life stage of a species and seldom consider different stages. Here, we studied the population demography of a protected Maculinea alconcruciata’ population and the factors that could influence the distribution of eggs. The results of the mark-recapture survey showed a relatively short flight period between mid-June and mid-July with a clearly marked early peak period. Unlike in many other butterflies, protandry was not strong. The total population of M. alconcruciata’ was estimated at 699 individuals. The survival rate, and consequently the average life span, was relatively low. Eggs showed a highly aggregated pattern, and egg numbers were positively related to general shoot size, while the number of flower buds and the features of the surrounding vegetation did not display any effect on egg laying. Based on our findings, the studied population appears viable, but specific management techniques could ensure optimal conditions for egg laying in this protected butterfly.  相似文献

Summary The VA-infected wheat varieties showed an increase of total (Lozano var.) and reducing (Lozano and Pane vars.) sugars in their root extracts. However, no clear relationship between sugar concentration in the root and VA mycorrhizal infection level could be established. In addition, the VA mycorrhizal hosts sorghum, alfalfa, sunflower and maize, and non-host radish and cabbage plants were tested for sugar content in their root extracts after fifteen days of growth. Sugars present in the root extracts of these plants did not seem to be a decisive factor in plant susceptibility to VA infection.  相似文献
