Southern rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome) have experienced severe population declines across their distribution area, potentially in response to bottom-up effects following elevated sea surface temperatures, changes in the food web and prey availability. We conducted stable isotope analysis to compare trophic levels and distribution patterns in the non-breeding period over three consecutive years, and between males and females, using egg membranes, blood cells and feathers of parent birds. Tissues representing the non-breeding season had lower ??13C values than prey sampled around the Falklands and red blood cells from breeding rockhopper penguins. In contrast, ??15N values were higher in red blood cells from the end of winter compared to those from the breeding season and compared to feathers. This indicated that rockhopper penguins left the Falkland Island area in the non-breeding season and foraged either around Burdwood Bank further south, or over the Patagonian Shelf. In winter, only males took more prey of higher trophic level than females. Inter-annual differences in isotopic values partly correlated with sea surface temperatures. However, as prey isotope samples were collected only in 1?year, inter-annual differences in penguin isotopic values may result from different foraging sites, different prey choice or different isotopic baseline values. Our study highlights the potential for stable isotope analyses to detect seasonal and gender-specific differences in foraging areas and trophic levels, while stressing the need for more sampling of isotopic baseline data.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in haematology and metabolic resources in the tench   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Significant variations in the number of white and red blood cells, haematocrit and haemoglobin were found throughout the year in sexually mature male and female tench Tinca tinca . In general, the lowest values were observed during autumn–winter and the highest during summer, with males exhibiting higher values than females. Plasma glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides were lower during the winter than during the summer–autumn seasons in both sexes. Gonado-somatic and hepato-somatic indices were inversely correlated in female tench throughout the year. Seasonal patterns in liver metabolic resources were very similar for both sexes. For males and females, liver glycogen and proteins increased during the autumn, whereas the liver stored lipid during spring. Dorsal muscle mainly deposited glycogen, whereas lipid was mainly stored in the ventral muscle. Relations between seasonal changes in environmental factors, such as feeding and temperature are discussed.  相似文献

Changes in nine haematological indices in adult female and male chinchilla were investigated over a period of 18 months. All haematological values were in the same range both for females and males, although seasonal fluctuations were more evident in the females. High levels of the red blood cells count (RBC), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), mean cell haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) during the winter months and low levels of these parameters during the summer months were found. The white blood cells count (WBC) and lymphocyte number (L) also decreased in summer, their values increasing during autumn and spring. The haematocrit values (Ht) and mean cell volumes (MCV) are high during the summer and low during the winter.  相似文献

1. Pathogens have been proposed as potentially important drivers of population dynamics, but while a few studies have investigated the impact of specific pathogens, the wealth of information provided by general indices of health has hardly been exploited. By evaluating haematological parameters in wild populations, our knowledge of the dynamics of health and infection may be better understood. 2. Here, haematological dynamics in natural populations of field voles are investigated to determine environmental and host factors associated with indicators of inflammatory response (counts of monocytes and neutrophils) and of condition: measures of immunological investment (lymphocyte counts) and aerobic capacity (red blood cell counts). 3. Individuals from three field vole populations were sampled monthly for 2 years. Comparisons with individuals kept under controlled conditions facilitated interpretation of field data. Mixed effects models were developed for each cell type to evaluate separately the effects of various factors on post-juvenile voles and mature breeding females. 4. There were three well-characterized 'physiological' seasons. The immunological investment appeared lowest in winter (lowest lymphocyte counts), but red blood cells were at their highest levels and indices of inflammatory response at their lowest. Spring was characterized by a fall in red blood cell counts and peaks in indicators of inflammatory response. During the course of summer-autumn, red blood cell counts recovered, the immunological investment increased and the indicators of inflammatory response decreased. 5. Poor body condition appeared to affect the inflammatory response (lower neutrophil and monocyte peaks) and the immunological investment (lower lymphocyte counts), providing evidence that the capacity to fight infection is dependent upon host condition. 6. Breeding early in the year was most likely in females in better condition (high lymphocyte and red blood cell counts). 7. All the haematological parameters were affected adversely by high population densities.  相似文献

20 male elite long distance runners were compared to a control group of blood donors to determine the effect of training on red blood cells. The acute effects of exercise on red cells were investigated in 11 of the runners following a race of 15-30 km. The runners had elevated resting values of red cell 2,3-DPG (P less than 0.05) and mean cell volume (P less than 0.01); blood Hb and ATP were not different from concentrations in the control group. The red cell status of the athletes may be explained by an increased proportion of young erythrocytes in runners. No statistically significant changes in red cell 2,3-DPG, ATP, mean cell volume or blood Hb were found post exercise.  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate any seasonal (spring, summer, autumn and winter) changes in haematological parameters in the blood of Tinca tinca measuring the number of red blood cells (RBC), haematocrit, white blood cells, and total plasma proteins. The results show significant changes in RBC and haematocrit in males comparing spring and summer with autumn and winter, whereas in females the RBC remained constant for all 4 seasons but the haematocrit decreased in autumn and winter compared to spring and summer. The white blood cells of male and female animals were significantly lower in spring and winter compared to summer and autumn. In male fish total protein contents significantly decreased in autumn and winter compared to spring and summer, whereas in females protein output significantly decreased in winter compared to the other seasons. The results indicate marked seasonal variation in the blood of male and female Tinca tinca. This variation may play a important protective role for the survival of the animals.  相似文献

Free-ranging southern two-toed sloths (Choloepus didactylus) were translocated during the flooding of a forest at a hydroelectric dam site in French Guiana. Over an 11 mo period blood samples were collected from 90 sloths (38 males, 52 females) in order to determine hematological and serum chemistry reference values. Mean values and range of values were calculated for 13 hematological and 21 serum chemistry parameters. Variations associated with sex, age and reproductive status were identified. Males had a significantly lower red blood cell count than females. Immature animals had more monocytes while adults had more neutrophils and higher mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration. Aspartate aminotransferase and triglyceride values were higher in young than in adult sloths but uric acid was lower. Lactating females showed lower red blood cells count and iron levels than non-lactating females. These profiles will help to provide reliable baseline data for medical evaluation of sloths.  相似文献

Factors involved in cell adhesion to vascular endothelium   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The adhesion of blood cells to endothelium can be studied in vitro using human endothelial cells in culture. This experimental model and radiometric techniques provide us with a simple system to quantify the adhesion of blood cells to endothelium. Normal human granulocytes isolated by density gradient adhere to normal endothelial cells in a proportion of 25%. Human promyelocytic cells (HL 60) induced by retinoic acid into mature cells adhere as well as normal granulocytes while the noninduced adhere poorly to endothelium. A small percentage of normal red cells attach to endothelial cells while red cells from patients with sickle cell anemia or diabetes mellitus have a significantly increased adhesion to endothelial cells (P greater than 0.001). This adhesion is statistically correlated with the extent and severity of vascular complications in diabetes mellitus (P less than 0.05). The addition of fibrinogen significantly increased (P less than 0.01) the adhesion of normal red cells, red cells from patients with sickle cell anemia or diabetes mellitus while gamma-globulins did not modify adhesion. Fibronectin potentiated the adhesion of normal red cells.  相似文献

Summary The viscosities of blood from shorthorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus scorpius), longhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus) and winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) were compared using a cone-plate viscometer. Both species of sculpin were almost identical with respect to blood and plasma viscosity at the temperatures (0 and 15°C) and shear rates (2.3–90/s) examined. In contrast, the viscosities of winter flounder blood and plasma were considerably greater than those observed in the sculpins. This difference in blood viscosity between the shorthorn sculpin and the winter flounder persisted over the hematocrit range of 0 to 40% red blood cells. The viscosity of the plasma and the interactions between plasma proteins and red blood cells appeared to be the major reasons for the relatively high viscosity of the flounder blood. Although a proportion of the flounder blood viscosity was attributable to fibrinogen, other plasma proteins also appeared to play a significant role. The relatively low blood viscosity of the sculpin species may confer a circulatory advantage during periods of low water temperatures.  相似文献

The estimate of heterozygosity and proportion of polymorphic loci for 33 red blood cell loci has been updated by the elimination of some loci of questionable status and the addition of data on 33 loci. The new figures for heterozygosity and proportion of polymorphic loci, .105 and .283, respectively, are based on 60 red blood cell loci of European origin populations. These values are less than those calculated by Lewontin in 1967, and furthermore they do not appear to be reaching an asymptote. At the present time, the red blood cell data and allozyme data for European populations have similar estimates of heterozygosity and proportion of polymorphic loci.  相似文献

1. Hematological parameters in the male and female bats differ only with respect to number and volume of erythrocytes: larger number of smaller cells found in males corresponds to smaller number of larger red blood cells in females, with hemoglobin level and hematocrit values remaining similar in both sexes. 2. Six-month-old bats have significantly higher numbers of lymphocytes when compared with adults. 3. There are no significant differences in hemograms (complete blood counts) for bats identified as "nathalinae" and "typical" Myotis daubentoni.  相似文献

Red blood cell orientation in orbit C = 0.   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4       下载免费PDF全文

Two modes of behavior of single human red cells in a shear field have been described. It is known that in low viscosity media and at shear rates less than 20 s-1, the cells rotate with a periodically varying angular velocity, in accord with the theory of Jeffery (1922) for oblate spheroids. In media of viscosity greater than approximately 5 mPa s and sufficiently high shear rates, the cells align themselves at a constant angle to the direction of flow with the membrane undergoing tank-tread motion. Also, in low viscosity media, as the shear rate is increased, more and more cells lie in the plane of shear, undergoing spin with their axes of symmetry aligned with the vorticity axis of the shear field in an orbit "C = 0" (Goldsmith and Marlow, 1972). We have explored this latter phenomenon using two experimental methods. First, the erythrocytes were observed in the rheoscope and their diameters measured. Forward light scattering patterns were correlated with the red cell orientation mode. Light flux variations after flow onset or stop were measured, and the characteristic times of erythrocyte orientation and disorientation were assessed. The characteristic time of erythrocyte orientation in Orbit C = 0 is proportional to the inverse of the shear rate. The corresponding coefficient of proportionality depends on the suspending medium viscosity eta o. The disorientation time tau D, after flow has been stopped, is such that the ratio tau D/eta o is independent of the initial applied shear stress. However, tau D is much shorter than one would expect if pure Brownian motion were involved. The proportion of erythrocytes in orbit C = 0 was also measured. It was found that this proportion is a function of both the shear rate and eta o. At low values of eta o, the proportion increases with increasing shear rate and then reaches a plateau. For higher values of eta o (5 to 10 mPa s), the proportion of RBC in orbit C = 0 is a decreasing function of the shear stress. A critical transition between orbit C = 0 and parallel alignment was observed at high values of eta o, when the shear stress is on the order of 1 N/m2. Finally, the effect of altering membrane viscoelastic properties (by heat or diamide treatment) was tested. The proportion of oriented cells is a steep decreasing function of red cell rigidity.  相似文献

Hematological and plasma chemistry indices are simple and essential diagnostic tools for monitoring the physiological and health status of fish. Aim of the present study was to obtain reference values for the hematological and plasma chemistry of wild populations of Labeo rohita captured in a freshwater pond between July 2008 and June 2010. These reference values and the mean were evaluated according to sex and season. In summer, the red blood cells (1.84 × 106 38 per cubic mm), haemoglobin (8.52 gm dl?1) and haematocrit (31.49%) were highest in males, whereas the maximum values for white blood cells (5.635 × 103 40 per cubic mm) were found in females, however, no significant variation of mean corpuscular volume (MCV) or mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) was observed between sexes. Various blood parameter levels between the sexes in summer were notably different from those measured in other seasons except for MCH and MCHC values (p < 0.05). Compared to most teleosts, the L. rohita has similar mean values for PCV and Hb. Throughout summer the glucose (76.0 mg dl?1), lipid (3.41 gm dl?1) and cholesterol (145.0 mg dl?1) levels were highest. In spring the plasma protein levels were higher in males, but higher in winter for females. Consequently, the seasons are key factors when using blood parameters as biomarkers for environmental alterations.  相似文献

While sexual segregation is expected in highly dimorphic species, the local environment is a major factor driving the degree of resource partitioning within a population. Sexual and individual niche segregation was investigated in the Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus), which is a benthic foraging species restricted to the shallow continental shelf region of south-eastern Australia. Tracking data and the isotopic values of plasma, red blood cells and whiskers were combined to document spatial and dietary niche segregation throughout the year. Tracking data indicated that, in winter, males and females overlapped in their foraging habitat. All individuals stayed within central Bass Strait, relatively close (< 220 km) to the breeding colony. Accordingly, both genders exhibited similar plasma and red cell δ13C values. However, males exhibited greater δ13C intra-individual variation along the length of their whisker than females. This suggests that males exploited a greater diversity of foraging habitats throughout the year than their female counterparts, which are restricted in their foraging grounds by the need to regularly return to the breeding colony to suckle their pup. The degree of dietary sexual segregation was also surprisingly low, both sexes exhibiting a great overlap in their δ15N values. Yet, males displayed higher δ15N values than females, suggesting they fed upon a higher proportion of higher trophic level prey. Given that males and females exploit different resources (mainly foraging habitats), the degree of individual specialisation might differ between the sexes. Higher degrees of individual specialisation would be expected in males which exploit a greater range of resources. However, comparable levels of inter-individual variation in δ15N whisker values were found in the sampled males and females, and, surprisingly, all males exhibited similar seasonal and inter-annual variation in their δ13C whisker values, suggesting they all followed the same general dispersion pattern throughout the year.  相似文献

Ninety patients whose spleen had been removed either because of trauma (41 cases) or as an elective procedure (49) were investigated for return of splenic function by counting pitted red cells and examining spleen scans made after injection of heat damaged 99mTc labelled red cells. There was no significant difference in the proportion of pitted red cells between the two groups of patients. Evidence of splenic tissue in scintiscans was not invariably associated with low pitted red cell values, suggesting that the presence of splenic tissue did not necessarily mean return of splenic function. In every patient whose proportion of pitted red cells was less than 16.2% the scintiscan showed splenic uptake. The proportion of patients with pitted red cell values below 16.2% was significantly higher in the group operated on for trauma, and it is concluded that this was due to splenosis. A high inverse correlation between pitted red cell counts and computed splenic volumes was found. Patients with pitted red cell values of less than 16.2% had computed volumes of 22-133 cm3; below this range the proportion of pitted red cells rose very sharply. These results confirm that splenosis occurs in adults, though less often than in children, and suggest that when splenic tissue is to be implanted a graft of at least 20-30 cm3 is needed to ensure satisfactory return of splenic function.  相似文献

On four occasions over a period of four years samples of adult blood to which known amounts of fetal blood had been added were distributed to 8-12 different laboratories taking part in clinical trials organized by an M.R.C. Working Party. Estimates were made of the proportion of fetal: adult red cells in the samples after preparing films by the acid-elution method. When the proportion of fetal: adult red cells was less than about 1:10,000, the highest and lowest estimates were separated by a factor of about 10. However, when the number of cells present was between about 1:100 and 1:1,000, most results were between half and twice the true number of cells present. It is pointed out that since fetal red cells are approximately 30% larger than adult red cells, and since only about 90% of fetal cells stain darkly in the acid-elution method, estimates of the proportion of darkly-staining cells in a film underestimate the volume of fetal red cells present by about one-third. A simple formula is proposed which corrects for this factor and which gives an estimate of the total volume of fetal red cells present, deduced from the ratio of fetal: adult red cells and assuming a maternal red cell volume at term of 1,800 ml.A method of screening blood films is suggested which, firstly, endeavours to standardize the density of adult red cells on films, and, secondly, takes into account the Poisson distribution. Thus limits are set for the number of fetal red cells which can be seen in scanning a given number of adult cells before the suspicion is aroused that a transplacental haemorrhage exceeding a certain amount is present. It is emphasized that the density of adult red cells on blood films varies very widely, and unless the cell density and the size of the low-power field are defined the practice of deducing the extent of transplacental haemorrhage from the number of fetal red cells seen per low-power field may lead to large errors.  相似文献

1. Various blood indices in the Panamint kangaroo rat revealed seasonal fluctuations. The red blood cell count during winter and summer averaged 7.2 +/- 1.0 X 10(6) and 9.2 +/- 0.2 X 10(6)/mm3 respectively. 2. The mean cell hemoglobin during winter and summer averaged 25 +/- 10.8 pg and 18.6 +/- 3.7 pg respectively. 3. These fluctuations may reveal a rapid rate of red blood cell destruction during winter in combination with a change in diet, concomitant to this, is an increase in mean cell hemoglobin of the surviving red blood cells.  相似文献

We studied bred and unbred female reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) during 12 wk of winter when ambient temperatures were low and nitrogen (N) demand for fetal growth is highest in pregnant females. Animals were fed a complete pelleted diet ad lib. that contained 2.54% N in dry matter that was 80% +/- 2% (X +/- SD) digestible. Female reindeer lost 64% +/- 14% of body fat but gained 34% +/- 11% of lean mass from 10 wk prepartum to parturition. These changes were equivalent to average balances of -14.14 +/- 2.35 MJ d(-1) and 10 +/- 3 g N d(-1). Blood cells, serum, and urine declined in (15)N/(14)N in late winter as body protein was gained from the diet. Blood cells of newborn calves were more enriched in (15)N and (13)C than that of their mothers, indicating the deposition of fetal protein from maternal stores. To quantify pathways of N flow in reindeer, N balance was measured by confining animals to cages for 10 d at 4 wk from parturition. N balance was inversely related to (15)N/(14)N in urea-N but not related to (15)N/(14)N of blood cells, creatinine, and feces. The proportion of urea-N derived from body protein increased above 0.46 as N balance fell below -200 mg N kg(-0.75) d(-1). Proportions of urea-N from body protein were -0.01 +/- 0.21 in pregnant females before and after caging and were consistent with average body protein gain in winter. Storage of protein allows reindeer and caribou to tolerate diets that are low in N without impairing fetal development.  相似文献

We studied the ontogeny of hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit and erythrocyte counts in the Galapagos fur seal ( Arctocephalus galapagoensis , Heller 1904). Two hundred and fifty-three animals were sampled between the ages of 22 d and > 8 yr, of which 46 were adult females. Body mass increased steadily with age from 6.1 ± 1.2 kg in 1-mo-old pups ( n = 27) to 28.5 ± 3.3 kg in adult females. Even adult females increased in mass with age. Hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), and red blood cell (RBC) values all increased in a logarithmic fashion with age up to 2 yr. Blood values for pups were Hct: 35.5 ± 4.1%; Hb: 12.9 ± 1.3 g/dl; RBC: 4.1 ± 0.3·106/μl. Half-year-old fur seals (Hct: 42.1 ± 3.2%; Hb: 15.7 ± 1.3 g/dl; RBC: 4.9 ± 0.5·106/μl; n = 50) were the oldest age group to show significantly lower blood values than adult females ( P < 0.001 for all three parameters). Yearling blood values (Hct: 47.2 ± 3.6%; Hb: 17.3 ± 1.6 g/dl; RBC: 5.6 ± 0.4·106/μl; n = 56) did not differ significantly from those of adult females ( P < 0.32; P < 0.26; P < 0.23, respectively). Blood values of adult females were lower than those of 2-yr-olds (Hct: 49.6 ± 2.4%; Hb: 18.5 ± 1.2 g/dl; RBC: 5.7 ± 0.3·106/μl; n = 31). These differences were significant only for RBCs ( P < 0.003). Up to the age of 1 yr, age was the best predictor for blood values, thereafter mass tended to be a better predictor. Female juveniles between the ages of 150 and 600 d had higher blood values than same-age males. The relationship of blood value development to diving activity is briefly described and the results are compared to values of other marine mammals. Ontogeny is discussed in relation to the development of these blood values in terrestrial mammals.  相似文献

High lung inflation pressures compress alveolar septal capillaries, impede red cell transit, and interfere with oxygenation. However, recently introduced acellular hemoglobin solutions may enter compressed lung capillaries more easily than red blood cells. To test this hypothesis, we perfused isolated rat lungs with fluorescently labeled diaspirin cross-linked hemoglobin (DCLHb; 10%) and/ or autologous red cells (hematocrit, 20). Septal capillaries were compressed by setting lung inflation pressure above vascular pressures (zone 1). Examination by confocal microscopy showed that DCLHb was distributed throughout alveolar septa. Furthermore, this distribution was not affected by adding red blood cells to the perfusate. We estimated the maximum acellular hemoglobin mass within septa to be equivalent to that of 15 red blood cells. By comparison, we found an average of 2.7 +/- 4.6 red cells per septum in zone 1. These values increased to 30.4 +/- 25.8 and 50.4 +/- 22.1 cells per septum in zones 2 and 3, respectively. We conclude that perfusion in zone 1 with a 10% acellular hemoglobin solution may increase the hemoglobin concentration per septum up to fivefold compared with red cell perfusion.  相似文献
