A new Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) of the reticulatus species group from Brazilian Amazon Region

A new species of the Culicoides reticulatus species group, Culicoides kuripako Felippe-Bauer, is described and illustrated based on females and male specimens from the states of Amazonas and Pará, Brazil. The new species is compared with its similar sympatric congener, Culicoides paucienfuscatus Barbosa.     

Five new species of the genus Sphaeromias Curtis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from India

Five new Indian species, Sphaeromias lineus, S.ornatipes, S.prominens, S. similineus and S.verbosus are described. There are 7 recorded in India before this investigation. With these, the number of world species of the genus is raised from 27 to 32 including 12 from India.     

A new Culicoides (Diptera:Ceratopogonidae) of the subgenus Diphaomyia from Peru

A new species of Culicoides of the subgenus Diphaomyia, Culicoides jurbergi Felippe-Bauer, is described and illustrated based on female specimens collected biting man and with light traps in Peruvian Amazonia. The species is compared with its similar congener mirsae Ortiz.     

Two new Culicoides of the paraensis species group (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from the Amazonian region of Peru

Two new species of the Culicoides paraensis species group, C. diversus Felippe-Bauer and C. peruvianus Felippe-Bauer, are described and illustrated based on female specimens from Amazonian region of Peru. A systematic key, table with numerical characters of females, and distribution of species of the C. paraensis group are given.     

A new Culicoides from the Amazonian region, Brazil (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

A new Neotropical species of biting midge Culicoides (Haematomyidium), C. kampa Felippe-Bauer, Veras & Castellon, is described and illustrated based on female specimens from the Amazonian Region.     

Description of Culicoides lisicarruni (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), a new species from Cundinamarca, Colombia

A new species of Culicoides of the subgenus Diphaomyia Vargas from high altitudes of the Andes in Colombia is described and photographied. The species is compared with its similar congener Culicoides marinkellei Wirth & Lee. Data on the collecting site and notes on the species daily activity are also provided.     

Descriptions of a new species and the pupae of two known species of Culicoides Latreille (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from India

Pupa, and adult male and female of Culicoides pseudosimilis n. sp., and pupae of two known species, C. selangorensis Wirth & Hubert, and C. dryadeus Wirth & Hubert, are described and illustrated. An identification key to the Indian species of Clavipalpis and Shermani species group of male Culicoides is also provided.     

A quantitative analysis of wing pattern in the Culicoides pulicaris species group (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

Wing pattern is very important in the taxonomy of the genus Culicoides. To date no quantitative method has been described permitting the inclusion of wing pattern characters with traditional morphometric characters in multivariate studies.
Two alternative methods for quantifying wing pattern are developed here. The first superimposes a grid onto a wing and the 420 'characters' generated are scanned for pigmentation. A second method recognizes 13 pattern elements from a sequentially arranged series of wings. The latter method was considered superior for several reasons: it uses logically acceptable characters, reduces character redundancy and allows easier and faster coding.
Empirical multivariate studies show the pattern element method to be of taxonomic value in the difficult C. pulicaris group, and to have considerable potential for use in this and other groups of Diptera with patterned wings.     

First report of Culicoides boyi (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in France

Culicoides boyi Nielsen, Kristensen & Pape 2015 (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), described in Denmark in 2015, is reported in France. This species is closely related to Culicoides pulicaris (Linnaeus 1758) and can only be distinguished from this species by a subtle variation in spot wing pattern and by calculation of maxillary palpal ratio.     

Description of the Pupa of Culicoides crucifer Clastrier (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

The pupa of Culicoides crucifer Clastrier is described, illustrated and photomicrographed by using binocular microscope and phase-contrast microscopy from material collected in an artificial container in Manaus, Brazil. The pupa shows features typical of pupae occurring in calm and clean waters, and it is compared with its similar congeners of the subgenus Haematomyiidium, Culicoides annuliductus Wirth and Culicoides debilipalpis Lutz.
