One of the most significant challenges to insect conservation is lack of information concerning species diversity and distribution. Because a complete inventory of all species in an area is virtually impossible, interest has turned to developing statistical techniques to guide sampling design and to estimate total species richness within a site. We used two such techniques, diversity partitioning and non-parametric richness estimation, to determine how variation in sampling effort over time affected species accumulation for a survey of Lepidoptera in an old-growth beech-maple forest. Temporal scaling of sampling effort had significant effects on two measures of species diversity. Increases in species richness were primarily driven by changes in species occurrences with season, while Shannon diversity was largely determined at the scale of individual sampling units (i.e. by spatial effects). Variation in sampling effort affected the values of the two most widely regarded richness estimators (ICE and Chao 2); neither diversity estimator achieved stable values across a range of sampling efforts. Even after 52 trap-nights and accounting for seasonality, rare species (singletons and uniques) remained a significant component of the moth community. To the extent that moth communities in other forest systems are similarly comprised of many rare species, non-parametric richness estimators should be expected to yield variable estimates with increased effort and should only be used to provide a minimum benchmark for predicting the number of species remaining to be sampled. Our results suggest the best strategy for a short-term survey of forest Lepidoptera should emphasize spreading sampling intervals throughout a given year rather than focusing on intensive sampling during a short time period or prolonged sampling over many years.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Spatial and temporal changes in larval densities were used to infer patterns of habitat use and survivorship in a fourteen-species assemblage of dragonflies (Odonata: Anisoptera) in a small fishless pond. The density of all species combined peaked at >1000 m−2 in late summer, Most species (e.g. Libellula spp.) were restricted to shallow, nearshore habitats (<1.0m in depth), but a few (e.g. Epitheca spp.) also used deeper areas of the pond. Only Perithemis tenera was most abundant in deep habitats.

Because many species exhibited temporal shifts in their use of habitats, it was necessary to estimate survival from changes in population size, calculated as the product of density and habitat area, summed across habitats. In most species, periods of high mortality in autumn and spring were separated by 3–4 months of negligible mortality in winter. Survivorship was linear only in the two species that completed all of larval development in summer ( Sympetrum vicinum and Pantala flavescens) . Average survival rates for these two species (−0.0049 and −0.0079 log density d−1) were similar to those in previous studies (Lawton, 1970; Benke & Benke, 1975).

Survivorship in many species was confounded by other life history phenomena such as (i) mixed voltinism, (ii) overlapping migrant and resident cohorts, and (iii) asynchronous development within species. Asynchrony made it difficult to estimate initial and final population sizes, hence total larval survivorship. However, based on emergence data, only 0.4–3% of larvae survived after peak abundance. None of this mortality can be ascribed to vertebrate predation, and only a little to overwintering stress and starvation. Thus, predation by invertebrates might play a major role in the regulation of these populations.  相似文献

It would be an exaggeration to argue that most invasions produce ecosystem impacts, and the term should be reserved for cases in which many species in an ecosystem are affected. However, certain facts suggest that true ecosystem impacts are more common than is normally assumed. First, the term “ecosystem impact” has often been reserved for cases in which the nutrient regime or nutrient cycling is affected, whereas physical structural and other changes in ecosystems ought to be included. Second, as with all ecology, very few systems and species have been studied relative to all those that exist, so it is likely that many ecosystem impacts remain to be detected. Third, there are many types of impacts, many are idiosyncratic, many are subtle, and many are indirect, so it is likely that many impacts have simply not been recognized even in studied systems. Finally, the frequency of the lag phenomenon in invasions implies that at least some existing non-native species that are currently having little or no impact will eventually have much greater ones. These facts suggest that, even if it would be an overstatement to say that most invasions cause ecosystem impacts, it would not be more of an overstatement than the common assertion that very few introduced species have any significant impact.  相似文献

Begging behaviour is an important element in the parent-offspring conflict; it has been studied in many avian species. However, the majority of the studies have been entirely based on the call counts, and they agreed that vocal activity was a good indicator of chick’s nutritional need and/or condition. Fewer researches were dedicated to the temporal-frequency variables of the begging calls themselves and they showed contrary results. Here begging behaviour in three burrow nested, uniparous species of auks (Alcidae) was studied. These objects provide an opportunity to study the signalling value of begging calls in the absence of important confounding factors such as nestling competition and predation pressure. I recorded calls of individual chicks in two conditions: during natural feeding and after experimental four-hour food deprivation. I found that almost all measured acoustic variables contain information about the chick’s state in all studied species. The hungry chicks produced calls higher in fundamental frequency and power variables and at higher calling rate compared to naturally feeding chicks. The effect of food deprivation on most acoustic variables exceeded both the effects of individuality and species. In all studied species, the frequency variables were stronger affected by hunger than the calling rate and call durations. I suppose that such strong change of acoustic variables after food deprivation can be explained by absence of vocal individual identification in these birds. As parents do not need to check individuality of the chick in the burrow, which they find visually during the day time, the chicks could use all of the acoustic variables to communicate about their nutritional needs.  相似文献

Embryogenesis and larval development were documented in 19 species of hermatypic scleractinians which release gametes during the summer coral spawning season on the Great Barrier Reef. Cleavage of fertilized eggs began approximately 2 h after spawning in all species, and gave rise to blastulae after 7–10 h. Endoderm formation in Platygyra sinensis was by invagination, and this appeared to occur in all species studied. All species observed at 36 h after spawing were mobile and full mobility was reached by 48 h. Settlement of planulae placed in aquaria occurred between 4 and 7 days after fertilization. These results suggest that larval corals produced by most gamete-releasing coral species are likely to be dispersed away from the parent reef.  相似文献

Longevity and displacement records aid in the understanding of animal senescence and the possible range of a species. Within wild populations this information is infrequent with most longevity reports being based on captive individuals and displacements being calculated from few monitored individuals within the population. Ringing offers a means of calculating these values and for avian species SAFRING and other bird ringing schemes are critically important. As many vulture populations are under threat, it has become ever more important to analyse all aspects of their demography to understand what can be done to aid the conservation of these species. Southern Africa’s eight vulture species are almost all listed as globally threatened and as a result many studies incorporate this ringing information. This has allowed for longevity records to be calculated for most of the species with the Cape Vulture obtaining the greatest reported longevity of 31 years 2 months and 14 days. In addition to the longevity records, ringing also produces maximum displacement records with the greatest vulture displacement being 2 530 km (White-backed Vulture). Although vulture ringing effort has improved in recent years very few new longevity records appear to be produced with most recent recoveries being under 10 years.  相似文献

Abstract. Vegetation and soil seed banks of a threatened Atlantic fen meadow community were studied using recent phytosociological records and seedling emergence from soil samples. Similarly managed but differently degraded stands that suffered different levels of species impoverishment were compared. The actual vegetation was related to a set of phytosociological references representing the subassociations of the community. DCA positions of reference relevés from the different subassociations were overlapping, suggesting that in all references many common species occur. Recent records were positioned in‐between the seed bank samples and the references. The soil seed banks of all stands were dominated by ordinary species. Most character species had at most sparse seed banks and no seedlings of locally extinct character species, mentioned in historic floristic records, were detected. In contrast species of pioneer and small‐sedge communities as well as those of heathlands were abundant in the seed banks. Based on the vertical distribution of seeds in the soil layers most fen meadow species were classified into transient or short‐term persistent seed bank types. We concluded that complete restoration of the Cirsio dissecti‐Molinietum without reintroduc‐tion is only likely in stands that were degraded only a few years ago. On the other hand, the presence of viable seeds of Nanocyperion and Parvocaricetea species is promising for the restoration of these communities even after decades. Recreation of pioneer habitats by sod cutting will preserve these species.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Information on the initial growth characteristics of annuals found in Chinese deserts is very limited. The aim of this study was to investigate seed germination and interactive effects of irrigation and seed burial depth in sand on seedling emergence and seedling survival in three annuals (Agriophyllum squarrosum, Bassia dasyphylla and Aristida adscensionis) commonly growing on sand dunes in these regions. METHODS: Effects of temperature, light and polyethylene glycol-6000 on seed germination were examined by irrigating seeds sown on filter paper in Petri dishes. Seedling emergence was examined for seeds sown on the surface of, or at different depths (5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mm) in, sand-filled pots, which were irrigated under different regimes. For seeds buried at a depth of 50 mm, seed viability was examined after irrigation of the pots. KEY RESULTS: Seeds of three species germinated at most temperatures recorded between spring and autumn in their native habitats. No seed dormancy was found in any species. For all three species, seedling emergence was most favoured when seeds were buried at a depth of 10 mm. When seeds sown on the sand surface were irrigated, seed germination was considerably suppressed due to water deficiency, but many seeds remained viable. For A. squarrosum and B. dasyphylla, many seeds that were deeply buried and irrigated remained ungerminated but viable, while for A. adscensionis deeply buried seeds germinated, but the seedlings did not emerge due to unfavourable seedling growth in deep sand. CONCLUSIONS: Precipitation is the most crucial factor in determining the seasonal emergence of seedlings of the three tested species in the field. The vertical distribution of seeds in sand determines the proportion of seeds that germinate after precipitation and acts to maintain seed banks over multiple years.  相似文献

The species diversity of phytoplankton is usually very high in wild aquatic systems, as seen in the paradox of plankton. Coexistence of many competitive phytoplankton species is extremely common in nature. However, experiments and mathematical theories show that interspecific competition often leads to the extinction of most inferior species. Here, we present a lattice version of a multi-species Lotka–Volterra competition model to demonstrate the importance of local interaction. Its mathematical equilibrium is the exclusion of all but one superior species. However, temporal coexistence of many competitive species is possible in an ecological time scale if interactions are local instead of global. This implies that the time scale is elongated many orders when interactions are local. Introduced predators are a serious threat to Australian vertebrates. However, the consequences of predation for an area's avifauna have rarely been quantified. We took advantage of the establishment of a 7,832 ha fox‐ and cat‐free safe haven at Mt Gibson, in Western Australia, to assess the consequences of excluding introduced mammal predators on the bird fauna. Bird surveys were conducted over 6 years, before and after the establishment of the introduced predator‐free safe haven. After 3 years, half the sites were enclosed by the fence that excluded introduced predators, while the remainder of sites remained outside the fence and were exposed to fox and cat activity. The sites were stratified by four major vegetation types. A total of 91 bird species were variously detectable with the survey approach, but were typically more detectable during morning surveys. Site occupancy varied considerably among species, but overall, occupancy by all species was most likely to be either not impacted or positively impacted by the safe haven. The most notable change was that avifaunal richness appeared to increase in woodland and shrubland habitats within, as compared to outside, the safe haven. We conclude that: (1) the safe haven had an overall positive impact on bird occupancy; and (2) there were no consistent trends with respect to the kinds of species whose occupancy was positively impacted, beyond them all being small‐ to medium‐sized birds and mostly insectivorous. However, these conclusions must be tempered by the poor detection probability of many species.  相似文献

Increasing housing density is an important component of global land transformation, with major impacts on patterns of biodiversity. However, while there have been many studies of the changes in biodiversity across rural–urban gradients, which are influenced in large part by housing densities, how biodiversity changes across the full range of regional variation in housing density remains poorly understood. Here, we explore these relationships for the richness and abundance of breeding birds across Britain. Total richness, and that of 27 urban indicator species, increased from low to moderate household densities and then declined at greater household densities. The richness of all species increased initially faster with household density than did that of the urban indicator species, but nonurban indicator species richness declined consistently after peaking at a very low housing density. Avian abundance showed a rather different pattern. Total abundance and that summed across all urban indicator species increased over a wide range of household densities, and declined only at the highest household densities. The abundance of individual urban indicator species generally exhibited a hump-shaped relationship with housing density. While there was marked intraspecific variation in the form of such relationships, almost invariably avian abundance declined at housing densities below that at which the UK government requires new developments to be built. Our data highlight the difficulties of maintaining biodiversity while minimising land take for new development. High-density housing developments are associated with declines in many of those species otherwise best able to exploit urban environments, and those components of native biodiversity with which human populations are often most familiar.  相似文献

Examination of survival rdtes of nestlings and fledglings of some species show that there is a strong tendency for those young which are hatched earliest in the season to have the greatest chance of surviving to breed. Since natural selection so strongly favours parents who leave many surviving young, the question arises as to why other birds breed later than the date at which they could most successfully raise their young.
It is suggested that the food supply for the breeding females immediately prior to the breeding season may limit their ability to form eggs and the females may thus not be able to lay at the time which would result in young being in the nest at the best time for raising them, but as soon after this time as the female is able to produce her eggs. Not all species are likely to be prevented, by food shortage, from breeding at the best time for raising young and the groups of birds most likely to be affected are discussed.  相似文献

It has recently been proposed that losses in farmland habitat heterogeneity may have been a primary driver of the profound declines exhibited by many farmland bird species in recent decades. However, it has yet to be demonstrated which facets of heterogeneity and what spatial scales are most important for birds. Here we analyse the relationship between abundance and features of landscape heterogeneity at three spatial scales (1, 9 and 25 km2) for 32 bird species commonly associated with farmland. Heterogeneity was quantified using three contrasting indices reflecting 1) the spatial mixing of land uses, 2) variation in field sizes and 3) the density of field boundaries. The spatial mixing of land‐uses explained, on average, the most variation in, and was most likely to be positively associated with, abundance at all spatial scales. The majority of species (66–75%, depending on the spatial scale) were more common in heterogeneous landscapes overall; however, migrants, those under a high level of conservation concern and farmland specialist species tended to be less abundant in more heterogeneous landscapes at all scales. Ground‐nesting species were also more likely to be found in more homogeneous habitats than non‐ground‐nesters, but only at the finest spatial scale. Relationships between abundance and heterogeneity were generally consistent across spatial scales; however, species of high conservation concern had more variable associations compared with other species. These results highlight a potential role for farmland habitat heterogeneity in determining the abundance of many farmland species but suggest that population responses to an increase in heterogeneity would not be unanimously positive and would probably have negative impacts on some species, notably those that are already threatened.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the surfaces of 21 species of tadpoles from six families, from Gosner Stage 25/26 until close to metamorphosis. Contrary to most previous reports, ciliated epidermal cells persisted until late stages in many but not all species and not at all locations examined. The commonest location for ciliated cells was around the nostrils, suggesting a role in chemosensation. Ciliated cells also occurred around the circumference of the eye, suggesting a cleaning role. Several species had ciliated cells on the tail. The densest, most regular arrays of ciliated cells occurred in species that tend to hang motionless in still-water pools, suggesting a respiratory function for these cells.  相似文献

1. Sediment selection was investigated under controlled conditions in two common lake-dwelling species of freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae), Elliptio complanata and Pyganodon grandis grandis .
2. Sediment choice was determined in six independent experiments under controlled conditions by distributing mussels randomly or evenly in tanks containing patches of sand and mud, and following their movement among sediment patches in experiments lasting between 30 and 45 days.
3. In all experiments, both species were found most frequently in muddy sediment patches. Movement toward muddy patches occurred rapidly: an average of nearly 80% of Pyganodon grandis grandis were found in mud after 30 days. Elliptio complanata moved rapidly to patches of mud at the start of experiments, but occupation of muddy sediments appeared to decrease after about 30 days.
4. Our results contrast with many field studies that suggest populations of lake-dwelling freshwater mussels infrequently inhabit mud and silt. We therefore postulate that large-scale mussel distribution in lakes is influenced most strongly by factors other than sediment composition.  相似文献

Bats (Chiroptera) represent the largest diversification of extant mammals after rodents. Here we report the results of a large-scale phylogeny of bats based on unconstrained searches for a data matrix of 804 non-chimeric, taxonomically updated bat terminals (796 species represented by a single terminal plus three species represented by ≥2 genetically distinct subspecies), able to preliminary test the systematics of most groups simultaneously. We used nine nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequence markers fragmentary represented for ingroups (c. 90% and 64% of extant diversity at genus and species level, respectively) and 20 diverse placental outgroups. Maximum Likelihood and Parsimony analyses applied to the concatenated dataset yielded a highly resolved, variously supported phylogeny that recovered the majority of currently recognized clades at all levels of the chiropteran tree. Calibration points based on 44 key fossils allowed the Bayesian dating of bat origins at c. 4 my after the K-Pg boundary, and the determination of stem and crown ages of intraordinal clades. As expected, bats appeared nested in Laurasiatheria and split into Yinpterochiroptera and Yangochiroptera. More remarkable, all polytypic, currently recognized families were monophyletic, including Miniopteridae, Cistugidae, and Rhinonycteridae, as well as most polytypic genera with few expected exceptions (e.g., Hipposideros). The controversial Myzopodidae appeared in a novel position as sister of Emballonuroidea―a result with interesting biogeographic implications. Most recently recognized subfamilies, genera, and species groups were supported or only minor adjustments to the current taxonomy would be required, except Molossidae, which should be revised thoroughly. In light of our analysis, current bat systematics is strongly supported at all levels; the emergent perception of a strong biogeographic imprint on many recovered bat clades is emphasized.  相似文献

Background

Infanticide by adult male occurs in many mammalian species under natural conditions, and it is often assumed to be a goal-directed action and explained predominately by sexual selection. Motivation of this behavior in mammals is limitedly involved.

Methodology and Principal Findings

We used long-term reproductive records and direct observation in captivity and in the field of two snub-nosed langur species on the basis of individual identification to investigate how infanticide happened and to be avoided in nonhuman primates. Our observations suggested that infanticide by invading males might be more accidental than goal-directed. The invading male seemed to monopolize all the females including lactating mothers during takeovers. Multiparous mothers who accepted the invading male shortly after takeovers avoided infanticide in most cases. Our results conjectured primiparous mothers would decrease infanticidal possibility if they sexually accepted the invading male during or immediately after takeovers. In the studied langur species, voluntary abortion or mating with the invading male was evidently adopted by females to limit or avoid infanticide by takeover males.

Conclusions and Significance

The objective of the invading male was to monopolize all adult females after his takeover. It appeared that the mother''s resistance to accepting the new male as a mating partner was the primary incentive for infanticide. Motivation analysis might be helpful to further understand why infanticide occurs in primate species.  相似文献

通过对落叶松人工林间伐林分和未间伐林分林下草本植物的调查以及林下光照条件的测定,分析间伐对林下草本植物多样性、组成的影响及其与光照条件的关系。结果表明,除均匀度指数在春、秋季表现不同外,间伐林分的丰富度指数、多样性指数均高于未间伐林分,说明间伐后草本植物多样性明显增加。依据草本物种在间伐前后出现与否和密度变化情况将其划分为正反应种(间伐后密度明显增加和间伐后新出现的种)、中性反应种(间伐后密度变化不明显或没有变化的种)和负反应种(间伐后密度明显减小和间伐后消失的种),间伐后出现大量新的草本种类,同时在间伐和未间伐林分的共有种中有许多表现为负反应种。在间伐林分中,间伐行和未间伐行的共有种春季有11个、秋季有10个,分别占间伐林分草本总种数的17.74%和15.15%,表明各行草本植物组成差异较大;各指数均呈现了从间伐行到未间伐行逐渐减小的趋势。主要的正反应种、中性反应种和负反应种均表现出与光照具有一定的相关性,且这种相关性与间伐和非间伐林分之间各草本物种与光照的相关性基本一致。  相似文献

本文总结了2021年国内外学者发表的中国鳞翅目新分类单元的情况。经过统计, 2021年共发表与中国鳞翅目物种相关的论文104篇, 专著1部, 涉及新分类群230个, 其中新属7个, 新种215个, 新亚种8个; 发表中国新记录属9个、中国新记录种78个(包括2亚种)、新组合31个; 提出4个种的异名, 2个种被赋予新名。新种(亚种)隶属于34科。云南省发表的新物种数和新记录物种数明显高于其他地区, 分别占全国发表总数的36.8%和39.7%。2021年我国南方新物种和新记录种发表数量仍然显著高于北方。  相似文献
