Six laboratory strains of Drosophila melanogaster were used to measure "net fitness" and its components by interspecific competition with D. hydei using 100 experimental populations. The "total competitive ability," an estimate of net fitness measured in these competition experiments, was tightly correlated with another measure of net fitness, the population size, in single-species experiments (phenotypic correlation rp = 0.675 and genotypic correlation rg = 0.997). Other components of fitness were also measured simultaneously, and the correlation with the net fitness was calculated. The very high correlation between two measurements of net fitness and lower correlations between net fitness and components of fitness suggests that these net fitness measures are more reliable estimates of the "real net fitness" than the components of fitness.  相似文献

Twelve diverse strains of Drosophila melanogaster have been examined with respect to their individual fitness components and with respect to their relative performance under competitive and noncompetitive conditions. Individual fitness components included estimates of time until successful copulation (t), fecundity (f) and egg-to-adult viability (v), and a composite index of overall fitness of the form fv/t was used for comparisons among strains. Noncompetitive performance was assessed in terms of the biomass (standing crop) and productivity of equilibrium experimental populations. Competitive performance was assessed in terms of relative competitive ability vis-à-vis a standard compound-autosome-bearing strain in single-generation tests. A significant correlation was found between the composite index of individual fitness components and the competitive compound-autosome test. Although the biomass and productivity of equilibrium populations were correlated with each other, neither of these noncompetitive measures was correlated with individual fitness components or with the composite index. We suggest that the performance of strains in such noncompetitive tests may be related to what Wright has called the "mean selective value" of the populations. Judging from their association with the composite index of individual fitness components, competitive tests such as the compound-autosome test seem to be related more nearly to the average Darwinian fitness of the populations.  相似文献

Growth chamber experiments with rapid-cycling Brassica rapa were designed to estimate the signs and magnitudes of the genetic correlations for plant performance in each of three conditions: no-competition (isolated plants), intraspecific competition, and interspecific competition with Raphanus sativa. Biomass and flower number were highest in the no-competition treatment, intermediate under intraspecific competition, and lowest under interspecific competition. Significant among-family variation in biomass and flower number was found under each regime. The mean family performance (biomass or flower number) in the no-competition treatment was significantly positively correlated with the performance in only one of the competitive treatments (for biomass in the intraspecific treatment). For both biomass and flower number there was a significant positive correlation between family means in the intra- and interspecific regimes. These correlations were greater in magnitude than those for the comparison between no-competition and competition (intra- or interspecific) treatments. Our results suggest that the importance of traits affecting plant performance is environment-dependent; the performance of a family grown without competition was a poor predictor of performance with competition, while the performance of families grown under intra- and interspecific competition was positively correlated.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the evolution of intrinsic postzygotic isolation within and between populations of Mimulus guttatus and Mimulus nasutus. We made 17 intraspecific and interspecific crosses, across a wide geographical scale. We examined the seed germination success and pollen fertility of reciprocal F1 and F2 hybrids and their pure-species parents, and used biometrical genetic tests to distinguish among alternative models of inheritance. Hybrid seed inviability was sporadic in both interspecific and intraspecific crosses. For several crosses, Dobzhansky–Muller incompatibilities involving nuclear genes were implicated, while two interspecific crosses revealed evidence of cytonuclear interactions. Reduced hybrid pollen fertility was found to be greatly influenced by Dobzhansky–Muller incompatibilities in five out of six intraspecific crosses and nine out of 11 interspecific crosses. Cytonuclear incompatibilities reduced hybrid fitness in only one intraspecific and one interspecific cross. This study suggests that intrinsic postzygotic isolation is common in hybrids between these Mimulus species, yet the particular hybrid incompatibilities responsible for effecting this isolation differ among the populations tested. Hence, we conclude that they evolve and spread only at the local scale.  相似文献

Understanding the likelihood and extent of introgression of novel alleles in hybrid zones requires comparison of lifetime fitness of parents and hybrid progeny. However, fitness differences among cross types can vary depending on biotic conditions, thereby influencing introgression patterns. Based on past work, we predicted that increased competition would enhance introgression between cultivated and wild sunflower (Helianthus annuus) by reducing fitness advantages of wild plants. To test this prediction, we established a factorial field experiment in Kansas, USA where we monitored the fitness of four cross types (Wild, F1, F2, and BCw hybrids) under different levels of interspecific and intraspecific competition. Intraspecific manipulations consisted both of density of competitors and of frequency of crop-wild hybrids. We recorded emergence of overwintered seeds, survival to reproduction, and numbers of seeds produced per reproductive plant. We also calculated two compound fitness measures: seeds produced per emerged seedling and seeds produced per planted seed. Cross type and intraspecific competition affected emergence and survival to reproduction, respectively. Further, cross type interacted with competitive treatments to influence all other fitness traits. More intense competition treatments, especially related to density of intraspecific competitors, repeatedly reduced the fitness advantage of wild plants when considering seeds produced per reproductive plant and per emerged seedling, and F2 plants often became indistinguishable from the wilds. Wild fitness remained superior when seedling emergence was also considered as part of fitness, but the fitness of F2 hybrids relative to wild plants more than quadrupled with the addition of interspecific competitors and high densities of intraspecific competitors. Meanwhile, contrary to prediction, lower hybrid frequency reduced wild fitness advantage. These results emphasize the importance of taking a full life cycle perspective. Additionally, due to effects of exogenous selection, a given hybrid generation may be especially well-suited to hastening introgression under particular environmental conditions.  相似文献

The melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett), and the pumpkin fly, Bactrocera tau (Walker), are economically important pests that attack mainly cucurbitacean fruits. The two fruit fly species have similar natural distributions, host ranges, and population growth capacities. This study was designed to assess the asymmetrical competitions through resource exploitation between the larvae of B. cucurbitae and B. tau at different density levels and temperatures, and on different hosts by comparing the relative effects of interspecific and intraspecific interactions on four life history parameters: survival rate, puparial mass, puparial duration, and developmental duration. Our results showed that intraspecific and interspecific competitions occurred under some laboratory conditions, and B. cucurbitae took advantage over B. tau at the high-density level and at low and high temperatures on pumpkin, bitter gourd, and bottle gourd when interspecific competition took place. Intraspecific and interspecific competitions mainly affected the puparial mass and the survival rate of the two fruit fly species but had no marked effect on the puparial duration or development duration.  相似文献

Deleterious alleles are constantly introduced into populations due to mutation. In subdivided populations, the impact of these mutations depends on the strength of selection as well as the softness of selection, that is, the extent to which fitness is governed by local rather than global competition. It is widely appreciated that the intensity and type of competition will affect selection on deleterious mutations but most empirical work has focused solely on the effects of competition on selection strength. However, competition has rarely been studied in the context of selection ‘softness’ even though competition is at the conceptual root of soft selection. All other things being equal, theory predicts that inter‐ and intraspecific competitions have opposing effects on the softness of selection. Using Drosophila melanogaster, we estimated the strength and softness of selection in a ‘baseline’ competitive environment as well as two additional competitive environments characterized by either additional intra‐ or interspecific competitors. We found that competitive environment had little effect on the average strength of selection. While the softness of selection was affected by the type of competition, the direction of change varied across tests of different genes, contrary to expectation. Although the ‘hard/soft’ selection paradigm implicitly assumes that all individuals are equally sensitive to the local competitive environment, we found this not to be the case. Wild‐type individuals were more sensitive to changes in the genetic quality of their local competitors than mutant individuals.  相似文献

Theory predicts that intraspecific competition should be stronger than interspecific competition for any pair of stably coexisting species, yet previous literature reviews found little support for this pattern. We screened over 5400 publications and identified 39 studies that quantified phenomenological intraspecific and interspecific interactions in terrestrial plant communities. Of the 67% of species pairs in which both intra‐ and interspecific effects were negative (competitive), intraspecific competition was, on average, four to five‐fold stronger than interspecific competition. Of the remaining pairs, 93% featured intraspecific competition and interspecific facilitation, a situation that stabilises coexistence. The difference between intra‐ and interspecific effects tended to be larger in observational than experimental data sets, in field than greenhouse studies, and in studies that quantified population growth over the full life cycle rather than single fitness components. Our results imply that processes promoting stable coexistence at local scales are common and consequential across terrestrial plant communities.  相似文献

The performance of hybrids relative to their parents is an important factor in speciation research. We measured the growth of 46 Saccharomyces yeast F1 interspecific and intraspecific hybrids, relative to the growth of each of their parents, in pairwise competition assays. We found that the growth of a hybrid relative to the average of its parents, a measure of mid‐parent heterosis, correlated with the difference in parental growth relative to their hybrid, a measure of phenotypic divergence, which is consistent with simple complementation of low fitness alleles in one parent by high fitness alleles in the other. Interspecific hybrids showed stronger heterosis than intraspecific hybrids. To manipulate parental phenotypic divergence independently of genotype, we also measured the competitive growth of a single interspecific hybrid relative to its parents in 12 different environments. In these assays, we not only identified a strong relationship between parental phenotypic divergence and mid‐parent heterosis as before, but, more tentatively, a weak relationship between phenotypic divergence and best‐parent heterosis, suggesting that complementation of deleterious mutations was not the sole cause of interspecific heterosis. Our results show that mating between different species can be beneficial, and demonstrate that competition assays between parents and offspring are a useful way to study the evolutionary consequences of hybridization.  相似文献

Intraspecific Drosophila studies suggest that resistance to heat and cold stresses are largely independent and that correlations across life cycle stages are low whereas comparisons of Drosophila species indicate correlations between heat and cold resistance as well as between resistance levels in different life cycle stages. These inconsistent results may reflect differences in associations among traits at the interspecific and intraspecific levels or interspecific correlations arising because of correlated selection pressures. These alternatives were tested using Drosophila serrata, D. birchii and hybrids derived from these species. Variation among hybrid lines and families was used to test associations at the interspecific level while intraspecific variation was examined using isofemale lines ol'D. serrata. There was a significant association between adult heat knockdown time at 38oC and adult cold resistance in one set of hybrid lines. An association between female knockdown resistance to heat and larval heat resistance was also evident in one set of hybrids. Resistance to heat and cold at the larval stage were not correlated at either the intraspecific or interspecific levels. At the intraspecific level, larval heat resistance and two measures of adult heat resistance were uncorrected. Moreover, adult and larval cold resistance measures were not correlated at either the intraspecific or interspecific levels. These results suggest that there arc no associations between resistance to heat and cold extremes and that extreme temperature resistance is largely independent across life cycle stages at both the intraspecific and interspecific levels. Species associations may therefore arise from correlated selection pressures rather than trait correlations.  相似文献

Fifty lethal-free, sterility-free isogenic lines of Drosophila melanogaster that were randomly sampled from a natural population were tested for net fitness and other components of fitness by competition with D. hydei. Larval viability and developmental time were also measured using the balanced marker method. Distribution patterns of these fitness components were similar, but correlation between the fitness components varied depending on the combinations used. The highest correlations were obtained between net fitness and productivity (rp = 0.6987, rg = 0.9269). The correlation between net fitness and total larval viability was much lower (rp = 0.1473 and rg = 0.2171). These results indicate that measuring net fitness, not just a component of fitness, is necessary for the good understanding of the genetic structures of natural populations.  相似文献

AM 真菌和枯落物互作下两种喀斯特植物种间竞争较种内竞争更能促进植物养分利用 枯落物是植物养分获取和土壤养分转化的关键载体。丛枝菌根(Arbuscular mycorrhizae, AM)对植物养分摄取的影响已被广泛认知。然而,在养分亏缺的喀斯特生境中,不同竞争方式的植物如何通过AM真菌和枯落物利用养分尚不清楚。本研究对两种喀斯特适生植物构树(Broussonetia papyrifera)和云贵鹅耳枥(Carpinus pubescens)进行种内竞争和种  间竞争种植处理,并通过幼套球 囊霉(Glomus etunicatum)接种或不接种处理,以及土壤中添加或不添加两物种叶片混合枯落物处理,测定了植物生物量以及氮、磷、钾浓度等指标,研究植物的生长和养分利用。研究结果表明,AM真菌对两种植物养分摄取影响不同,AM真菌显著提高了种内和种间竞争下构树的养分摄取量,但降低了云贵鹅耳枥的养分摄取量。种间竞争下接种AM真菌,枯落物添加促进了云贵鹅耳枥对氮的摄取,抑制了构树对氮的摄取。接种AM真菌和添加枯落物条件下,种间竞争的构树对氮、磷和钾的摄取量及云贵鹅耳枥对氮的摄取量均高于种内竞争;种间竞争下两物种养分竞争力呈现明显差异,即构树对磷和钾养分竞争力显著提高,对氮则不显著;云贵鹅耳枥仅对钾的养分竞争力显著降低,对氮和磷则无显著影响。这些结果说明,在AM真菌与枯落物相互作用下,两种喀斯特植物种间竞争较种内竞争更能促进植物养分利用。  相似文献

Understanding the shifts in competitive ability and its driving forces is key to predict the future of plant invasion. Changes in the competition environment and soil biota are two selective forces that impose remarkable influences on competitive ability. By far, evidence of the interactive effects of competition environment and soil biota on competitive ability of invasive species is rare. Here, we investigated their interactive effects using an invasive perennial vine, Mikania micrantha. The competitive performance of seven Mmicrantha populations varying in their conspecific and heterospecific abundance were monitored in a greenhouse experiment, by manipulating soil biota (live and sterilized) and competition conditions (competition‐free, intraspecific, and interspecific competition). Our results showed that with increasing conspecific abundance and decreasing heterospecific abundance, (1) Mmicrantha increased intraspecific competition tolerance and intra‐ vs. interspecific competitive ability but decreased interspecific competition tolerance; (2) Mmicrantha increased tolerance of the negative soil biota effect; and (3) interspecific competition tolerance of Mmicrantha was increasingly suppressed by the presence of soil biota, but intraspecific competition tolerance was less affected. These results highlight the importance of the soil biota effect on the evolution of competitive ability during the invasion process. To better control Mmicrantha invasion, our results imply that introduction of competition‐tolerant native plants that align with conservation priorities may be effective where Mmicrantha populations are long‐established and inferior in inter‐ vs. intraspecific competitive ability, whereas eradication may be effective where populations are newly invaded and fast‐growing.  相似文献

采用逐步扩大范围的方法确定影响对象木的邻体最佳竞争范围,利用Hegyi提出的单木竞争指数模型对塔里木荒漠优势植物———胡杨种内、种间竞争强度进行定量分析。结果表明,在胡杨群落中,对象木的最适竞争距离为6 m,胡杨种内、种间竞争强度随着植株径级的增大而逐渐减小,种内竞争较种间竞争剧烈。竞争强度与对象木胸径服从幂函数关系,从模型预测结果可知当胡杨胸径达30 cm以上时,竞争强度变化很小。因此,应在此前采取适当的人工疏伐措施来促进植株生长和增强生态系统的稳定性。  相似文献

Models of competitor coevolution, especially the genetic feedback hypothesis, suggest that a negative correlation between intraspecific and interspecific competitive effects may be important in sustaining competitor coexistence, and can give rise to oscillatory dynamics with repeated reversals of competitive superiority. I reanalyzed previously published census data from an experiment in which populationsof Drosophila melanogaster andD. simulans underwent competitive coevolution in one familiar and two novel environments, to specifically look for any evidence of a negative relationship between intraspecific and interspecific competitive effects on population growth rates, and for any indication of short period cycling in the relative magnitude of intraspecific and interspecific competitive effects. While there was considerable variation in the relative magnitude of intraspecific and interspecific competitive effects over generations, among both populations and environments, there was no clear evidence supporting the genetic feedback hypothesis. Intraspecific and interspecific competitive effects on population growth rates were strongly positively correlated in novel environments, and uncorrelated in the familiar environment. Data from the familiar environment indicated that indices of competition of populations of the initially superior competitor,D. melanogaster, might be showing some cyclic behaviour, but I argue that this is likely to be transient, and not suggestive of sustained oscillatory dynamics predicted by the genetic feedback model. I discuss the results in the context of the importance of the genetic architecture of intraspecific and interspecific competitive abilities in determining the coevolutionary trajectory of competitive interactions.  相似文献

Inter- and intraspecific competitive interactions among the species Patella depressa Pennant and P. vulgata L. were analysed on the northern coast of Portugal, where both species co-occur in similar proportions. Increased (×2, ×4), normal and decreased (×1/2 intraspecific only) densities of limpets were used to test the effects of competition on the growth and mortality of the limpets, and competitive interactions between the different species. Fenced plots of 25×25 cm enclosing marked limpets at various densities were set up at a mid tidal level on the shore. Twelve treatments with three replicates of different combinations of densities and species were established. Mortality was recorded every 15 days and length was measured monthly during the 5 months of the experiment. At the end of the experiment, limpets were collected for biometry, sex determination and gonad staging. Both species of grazing molluscs showed increased mortality and reduced size and weight in increased density treatments. Limpets in decreased density treatments showed lower mortality and higher size. There were no significant differences between the effect of P. vulgata on P. depressa and the effect of P. depressa on P. vulgata on mortality and length. There were, however, decreases in weight due to intraspecific effects for both species. For P. vulgata, interspecific effects were much less than intraspecific effects and for P. depressa, the interspecific effects depended on density. The analysis of the gonad stage at the end of the experiment showed that the lower stages of development were most prevalent at increased densities and the occurrence of neuter individuals only in increased densities single species plots corroborated the evidence of a stronger intraspecific interaction. The availability of food was indirectly assessed by determination of chlorophyll concentration with spectrophotometric analysis of rock chips. Microalgal food assessment in this experiment, however, did not show any clear trends. The results were compared with previous studies of competition in grazing molluscs and discussed in relation to the limits of distribution of P. vulgata on the Portuguese coast.  相似文献

This paper considers the coevolution of phenotypic traits in a community comprising two competitive species subject to strong Allee effects. Firstly, we investigate the ecological and evolutionary conditions that allow for continuously stable strategy under symmetric competition. Secondly, we find that evolutionary suicide is impossible when the two species undergo symmetric competition, however, evolutionary suicide can occur in an asymmetric competition model with strong Allee effects. Thirdly, it is found that evolutionary bistability is a likely outcome of the process under both symmetric and asymmetric competitions, which depends on the properties of symmetric and asymmetric competitions. Fourthly, under asymmetric competition, we find that evolutionary cycle is a likely outcome of the process, which depends on the properties of both intraspecific and interspecific competition. When interspecific and intraspecific asymmetries vary continuously, we also find that the evolutionary dynamics may admit a stable equilibrium and two limit cycles or two stable equilibria separated by an unstable limit cycle or a stable equilibrium and a stable limit cycle.  相似文献

Using the yeast two-hybrid system, intraspecific protein interactions were detected in Streptococcus iniae and Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris between the transmembrane activation protein (CpsC and EpsA, respectively) and the protein tyrosine kinase (CpsD and EpsB, respectively), between two protein tyrosine kinases, and between the protein tyrosine kinase and the phosphotyrosine phosphatase (CpsB and EpsC, respectively). For each of these intraspecific interactions, interspecific interactions were also detected when one protein was from S.?iniae and the other was from Streptococcus thermophilus . Interactions were also observed between two protein tyrosine kinases when one protein was from either of the Streptococcus species and the other from L. lactis subsp. cremoris. The results and sequence comparisons performed in this study support the conclusion that interactions among the components of the tyrosine kinase?- phosphatase regulatory system are conserved in the order Lactobacillales and that interspecific genetic exchanges of the genes that encode these proteins have the potential to form functional recombinants. A better understanding of intraspecific and interspecific protein interactions involved in regulating exopolysaccharide biosynthesis may facilitate construction of improved strains for industrial uses as well as identification of factors needed to form functional regulatory complexes in naturally occurring recombinants.  相似文献

Inter- and intraspecific competitive abilities are significant determinants of invasive success and the ecological impact of non-native plants. We tested two major hypotheses on the competitive ability of invasive species using invasive (Taraxacum officinale) and native (T. platycarpum) dandelions: differential interspecific competitive ability between invasive and native species and the kin recognition of invasive species. We collected seeds from two field sites where the two dandelion species occurred nearby. Plants were grown alone, with kin (plants from the same maternal genotype) or strangers (plants from different populations) of the same species, or with different species in a growth chamber, and the performance at the early developmental stage between species and treatments was compared. The invasive dandelions outcompeted the native dandelions when competing against each other, although no difference between species was detected without competition or with intraspecific competition. Populations of native species responded to interspecific competition differently. The effect of kinship on plant performance differed between the tested populations in both species. A population produced more biomass than the other populations when grown with a stranger, and this trend was manifested more in native species. Our results support the hypothesis that invasive plants have better competitive ability than native plants, which potentially contributes to the establishment and the range expansion of T. officinale in the introduced range. Although kin recognition is expected to evolve in invasive species, the competitive ability of populations rather than kinship seems to affect plant growth of invasive T. officinale under intraspecific competition.  相似文献
