Most ground-dwelling sciurids emit nonrepetitive and repetitive calls in response to predators. In this study, I simulated terrestrial (badger Taxidea taxus) and aerial (flying disc) predator attacks to elicit escape and vocal responses in Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus). In response to the badger, ground squirrels often ran, but rarely to a burrow, and were most likely to give nonrepetitive calls before running or without running; rarely did they enter burrows. Ground squirrels in direct line of the flying disc (i.e., “target” squirrels under “attack”), ran to, and into, the nearest escape burrow and rarely gave a nonrepetitive call. Squirrels distant from the flying disc often called, usually while running or after assuming an upright posture at the nearest burrow. These results suggest that ground squirrels incur little cost when calling in response to aerial predators. Nonrepetitive and repetitive calling in response to the badger and flying disc did not differ significantly among age-sex classes; however, parous females were more likely than nonparous females to give both types of calls in response to the badger. Nonparous females either with or without close nondescendant kin rarely called in response to the badger. Thus, there was no indication that females exposed to the badger behaved nepotistically toward close kin other than their juvenile offspring. Nonrepetitive calling in response to the badger apparently functions primarily to warn vulnerable offspring and, hence, is a component of maternal investment. Although the occurrence of antipredator calling in response to the flying disc did not vary significantly among parity-kin classes, there was evidence that adult and yearling females were more likely to emit repetitive, and to a lesser extent, nonrepetitive calls, if close nondescendant kin were in the colony. I conclude that indirect fitness benefits, that is, kin selection, probably contributes to the maintenance of antipredator calling in response to aerial predators.  相似文献

Snake naive and experienced California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) were video taped while interacting with either a gopher snake or rattlesnake in a simulated burrow dimly illuminated with red light. Using nonvisually guided behavior, naive and experienced squirrels reacted to snakes in qualitatively similar ways, and behaved more defensively toward snakes than toward a control stimulus (white rat). The squirrels alternately interacted with the snake and attempted to escape from the burrow, which had a sealed entrance. Interaction with the snake included cautious approach in elongate postures, prolonged investigation of adjacent alleys before entering them, kicking sand at the snake, frequent tooth chattering, occasional calling, and building burrow plugs out of sand. These they packed by butting with their heads. When permitted to escape from the burrow, they turned just outside the entrance to tail flag, kick sand, scent mark, and finally plug the burrow. Since visual cues were not available, olfactory and auditory stimuli from the snake appeared to mediate snake-directed behavior in the burrow.  相似文献

Many hoarding rodents use burrows not only for dwelling and protection from natural enemies, but also for food storage. However, little is known how burrows used by scatter-hoarding animals influence their foraging behaviors. In addition, handling time for a given food item has a fundamental impact on hoarding strategies of these hoarding animals: food items with longer handling time are more likely to be hoarded due to increasing predation risk because the animals spend more time outside their burrows if they consumed such food. By providing with two types of artificial burrows (aboveground vs. underground) and two types of food items (i.e. seeds) with contrasting handling times, we investigated how burrow condition and handling time co-influence hoarding strategies of a key scatter-hoarding rodent, Edward's long-tailed rat (Leopoldamys edwardsi) in large enclosures in southwest China. We found that only a few animals larder-hoarded fewer seeds when only aboveground burrows were available, while over 80% of the animals preferred to use the underground burrows and hoard significantly more seeds in the burrows when both aboveground and underground burrows were provided simultaneously. We also found that seed handling time significantly affected hoarding strategies of the animals: they consumed and/or scatter-hoarded more Camellia oleifera seeds with shorter handling time outside the burrow, but consumed and larder-hoarded more Lithocarpus harlandii seeds with longer handling time in underground burrows. Our study indicates that both burrow types and seed handling time have important impacts on hoarding strategies of scatter-hoarding animals.  相似文献

The costs of reproduction are expected to be higher under unfavourable conditions, so that breeding in years of low food supply should have important costs. In addition, the costs of reproduction may be contingent on the age of individuals, and young growing and old senescent individuals should suffer higher costs than the prime-age ones. We tested these predictions by investigating the costs of reproduction as a function of food availability and age in female North American red squirrels using the long-term data on survival and reproduction. We found that the costs of reproduction were independent of food supply, and we did not detect any trade-off between the current and future reproduction. We also did not detect any survival cost of reproduction for the prime-age females, but found evidence for survival costs in yearlings and old (6 years or above) females with successfully breeding individuals having a lower chance of survival compared with unsuccessful or non-breeding ones. These results supported our prediction that the costs of reproduction depended on the age of female red squirrels and were higher in young growing and old senescent individuals. Our study also indicated that, in contrast to large herbivores, heterogeneity in individual quality and viability selection in red squirrels do not affect the study of trade-offs and of the age variation in life-history traits.  相似文献

Postnatal hippocampal neurogenesis in wild mammals may play an essential role in spatial memory. We compared two species that differ in their reliance on memory to locate stored food. Yellow-pine chipmunks use a single cache to store winter food; eastern gray squirrels use multiple storage sites. Gray squirrels had three times the density of proliferating cells in the dentate gyrus (determined by Ki-67 immunostaining) than that found in chipmunks, but similar density of young neurons (determined by doublecortin immunostaining). Three explanations may account for these results. First, the larger population of young cells in squirrels may increase the flexibility of the spatial memory system by providing a larger pool of cells from which new neurons can be recruited. Second, squirrels may have a more rapid cell turnover rate. Third, many young cells in the squirrels may mature into glia rather than neurons. The densities of young neurons were higher in juveniles than in adults of both species. The relationship between adult age and cell density was more complex than that has been found in captive populations. In adult squirrels, the density of proliferating cells decreased exponentially with age, whereas in adult chipmunks the density of young neurons decreased exponentially with age.  相似文献

We used giving-up densities in food patches to measure the effectsof several direct (left by the predator) and indirect (environmentalcorrelates of risk) cues of predatory risk on the foraging behaviorof free-living fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) and thirteen-linedground squirrels (Spermophihis tridtctmlineatus). Increasesin giving-up density in response to stimuli allow quantitativecomparisons of the effects of different types of cues. We usedolfactory (urine of red fox) and visual (plastic models of owls)direct cues. As indirect cues, we used mkrohabitat (near orfar from a refuge), background coloration (white, green, andbrown tarpaulins), and escape substrate (canvas tarpaulins versusnatural surrounding substrates). Both squirrel species respondedmost strongly to microhabitat Fox squirrels increased theirgiving-up density by 97% when feeding 4–6 m from a treecompared to feeding at the tree base. Thirteen-lined groundsquirrels increased giving-up densities 84% when feeding 2 mfrom their burrows compared to feeding at the burrow entry.In response to an unfavorable escape substrate (canvas versusgrass), fox squirrel giving-up densities increased 61%. Foxsquirrels and ground squirrels increased giving-up densities26% and 35%, respectively, in response to a plastic owL Backgroundcoloration had no demonstrable effect on the giving-up densitiesof fox squirrels. The combined observations of elevated DNA repair gene expression, high uracil-DNA glycosylase-initiated base excision repair, and a low spontaneous mutant frequency for a lacI transgene in spermatogenic cells from young mice suggest that base excision repair activity is high in spermatogenic cell types. Notably, the spontaneous mutant frequency of the lacI transgene is greater in spermatogenic cells obtained from old mice, suggesting that germ line DNA repair activity may decline with age. A paternal age effect in spermatogenic cells is recognized for the human population as well. To determine if male germ cell base excision repair activity changes with age, uracil-DNA glycosylase-initiated base excision repair activity was measured in mixed germ cell (i.e., all spermatogenic cell types in adult testis) nuclear extracts prepared from young, middle-aged, and old mice. Base excision repair activity was also assessed in nuclear extracts from premeiotic, meiotic, and postmeiotic spermatogenic cell types obtained from young mice. Mixed germ cell nuclear extracts exhibited an age-related decrease in base excision repair activity that was restored by addition of apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) endonuclease. Uracil-DNA glycosylase and DNA ligase were determined to be limiting in mixed germ cell nuclear extracts prepared from young animals. Base excision repair activity was only modestly elevated in pachytene spermatocytes and round spermatids relative to other spermatogenic cells. Thus, germ line short-patch base excision repair activity appears to be relatively constant throughout spermatogenesis in young animals, limited by uracil-DNA glycosylase and DNA ligase in young animals, and limited by AP endonuclease in old animals.  相似文献

对4只青年猫(1-3龄)和4只老年猫(10-13龄)视神经进行形态计量比较研究。取两个年龄组的颅内相应部分视神经进行横向连续切片,H.E染色于光镜下观察其基本结构;相邻切片进行结晶紫染色显示胶质细胞;神经丝蛋白(NF)免疫染色显示视神经纤维,胶质纤维酸性蛋白(GFAP)免疫染色显示星形胶质细胞(AS),对实验结果进行统计学分析并绘制纤维直径谱。与青年猫相比,老年猫视神经外膜厚度、直径、面积均显著增加,视神经纤维的密度和数量显著下降,且以视神经中央部纤维密度下降最显著;纤维直径谱分析结果显示,青、老年猫纤维直径分布范围相似,但老年猫的峰直径及纤维平均直径比青年猫的显著减小;另外,老年猫视神经束中的星形胶质细胞明显膨大,胶质细胞密度以及星形胶质细胞占胶质细胞总数的百分比均显著增加。结果表明:在衰老过程中视神经纤维出现明显的丢失现象,纤维平均直径显著减小使其对视觉信息的传导速度减慢,这可能是导致老年个体视觉分析速度下降的重要原因;老年个体视神经束内胶质细胞活动增强可能对维持视神经纤维形态、功能或延缓视神经进一步衰老起保护作用  相似文献

Purpose Partial bladder outlet obstruction (PBOO) results in marked biochemical alterations in the bladder. In this study, we focused on comparison of thapsigargin sensitive sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase activity (SERCA) and Citrate Synthase after short term PBOO in young versus old rabbits. Materials and methods A total of 20 young and 20 mature male rabbits were divided into 4 sub-groups of 5 rabbits each (4 obstructed and 1 sham-control rabbit). The rabbits in the groups were evaluated after 1, 3, 7, and 14 days of obstruction, respectively. The activities of SERCA and citrate synthase were examined as markers for sarcoplasmic reticular calcium storage and release and mitochondrial function, respectively. Results The SERCA activity of bladder body smooth muscle in the young animals increased at 7 and 14 days. For the old rabbits, the SERCA activity decreased significantly by 1 day and remained this level throughout the course of obstruction, and was significantly lower than young at all time periods. The citrate synthase activity in the young animals decreased over the 1–7 days, and then returned toward control level by 14 days following obstruction. In the old animals, citrate synthase activity of bladder body smooth muscle progressively decreased over the course of the study, and was significantly lower in the old than the young animals after 14 days obstructed. Conclusion The urinary bladders of the young rabbits have a considerable greater ability to adapt to PBOO than do those of the old rabbits. The deterioration of mitochondrial and SR function may be important mechanisms underlying geriatric voiding dysfunction.  相似文献

The epidemiology of Bartonella infections in Richardson's ground squirrels (Spermophilus richardsonii) was studied at multiple sites in Saskatchewan, Canada, from 2002 to 2004. The overall prevalence of Bartonella infection was 48%. Juvenile squirrels were significantly more likely to be infected with Bartonella than were adults (58% and 37%, respectively), and juvenile animals also were significantly more likely to have high levels of bacteremia compared to adult animals. Prevalence of Bartonella infection appeared to decrease with age; only 24% of animals known to be > or = 2 yr old were infected with Bartonella. Prevalence of infection was lowest in May (27%) and highest in late summer and early autumn (71%). The prevalence of fleas also varied seasonally, and animals were more likely to have fleas in the late summer and early autumn than in early summer. We found no relationship between Bartonella prevalence and host density or flea prevalence.  相似文献

Feeding efficiency is an important factor explaining diet selection in seed-eating animals. Behavioral adaptation to process and consume the seed is advantageous to improve their feeding rate. The Japanese walnut (Juglans ailanthifolia), which has a nutritious kernel surrounded by a hard shell, is an important food for the Japanese squirrel (Sciurus lis) in lowland mixed-species forests in Japan. In the present study, population differences in feeding technique were examined. In all squirrels captured from the Takao population (with wild Japanese walnuts in their habitat), the optimal feeding technique for quickly opening the walnut shell was observed. However, only 8% of the squirrels from the Fuji population (without walnuts in their habitat) processed the walnuts by the optimal feeding technique. By a repetitive provision of walnuts for 50 days, 14% of squirrels from the Fuji population acquired the optimal feeding technique. Learning effects did not differ significantly between solitary (without a demonstrator) and social conditions (with a demonstrator). The effects of age on learning the feeding technique were examined using individuals from a zoo population that had been naïve for Japanese walnuts. All five individuals aged 6 months old, and half the individuals aged 1–2 years old, ate walnuts by the optimal feeding technique after a 2-month learning period, but none of the individuals older than 3 years did. Consequently, the walnut feeding techniques of the Japanese squirrel are not entirely genetically fixed behavior and can be improved by learning at a young age.  相似文献

Concentrations of lead and zinc in the kidneys of 180 urban gray squirrels were determined by spectrophotometry and found similar for all age groups; however, concentrations of cadmium increased up to two years of age. Values for 12 rural squirrels were significantly lower than those of the urban animals. There were no differences in mean concentrations of the metals when urban squirrels were grouped by the land usage pattern of the sites in which they were captured. Grouping squirrels by human socioeconomic strata for the city revealed that squirrels in low socioeconomic areas have significantly higher levels of lead than animals residing in middle or high socioeconomic areas.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of acute and chronic injections of the neurosteroid dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate DHEA-S on pineal gland melatonin synthesis. Pineal melatonin production and plasma melatonin levels were investigated in young (9-week-old) and old (27-month-old) male Wistar rats. DHEA or DHEA-S have been administered acutely in a single intraperitoneal injection at a dosage of 50, 250, or 500 microg per animal, or on a long-term basis, i.e., for 8 days at a dosage of 100 microg per animal, 1 h before the onset of darkness. DHEA, at a dose of 50, 250, or 500 microg per animal, administered acutely to rats had no significant effects on pineal melatonin production whatever the age of the animals. In contrast, 500 microg DHEA-S induced a significant increase in the pineal melatonin content (15% in young animals and 35% in old animals) and the activity of N-acetyltransferase, the rate-limiting enzyme for melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland, (40% in young animals and 20% in old animals), without altering the activity of hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase whatever the age of the animals. At lower concentrations (50 or 250 microg) DHEA-S had no effect on pineal melatonin production regardless of the age of the rats. Chronic injection of DHEA or DHEA-S at a dose of 100 microg had no effect on pineal melatonin or NAT and HIOMT activities in the two age groups. This work shows that DHEA-S (and not DHEA) is able, at pharmacological concentrations, to stimulate melatonin production by rat pineal glands regardless of the age of the animals.  相似文献

Juvenile, but not adult, Belding’s ground squirrels (Spermophilus beldingi) exhibit markedly different responses to alarm calls as a function of their environment. Compared with same-aged, free-living juveniles, captive juveniles (housed in large outdoor enclosures) are more likely to respond to playbacks, to exhibit more exaggerated initial responses (e.g. enter a burrow vs. freeze) and to remain alert longer following playbacks of alarm and non-alarm calls. Two studies were conducted to identify the factors contributing to these response differences. Postemergent rearing environments (such as the opaque enclosure walls that limited visual and auditory stimulation in captivity, or the increased number of conspecifics and natural alarm calls that free-living juveniles experienced) could not account for the majority of response differences between captive and free-living juveniles (Study 1). To determine if the attenuated responses of free-living juveniles were due to foraging pressures, we compared the behaviours of food-provisioned captive juveniles with those of non-provisioned captive juveniles. Although sample sizes were small, no differences were evident in the development or expression of responses as a function of foraging pressure. Next, the development of captive juveniles was compared with that of juveniles reared in the field but housed in captivity after emergence (Study 2). Differences in the response patterns of field-reared and captive-reared animals matched the differences reported previously, as the responses of field-reared animals observed in captivity mirrored those of free-living juveniles that remained in the field. Thus, the differences in alarm-call responses originally observed between captive and free-living juveniles are attributed to their pre-emergent, but not post-emergent, rearing histories. Captive pups experienced levels of auditory, visual, tactile, and olfactory stimulation that were greater than those typically experienced by free-living pups. The increased exposure to conspecific alarm calls may have primed captive pups to respond more often and more intensely to the auditory stimuli they heard as juveniles. Sensitivity to early rearing environments may be adaptive for young ground squirrels if it facilitates the development of antipredator behaviour patterns that are appropriate for the local predator environment (e.g. openness of habitat, frequency of predators, availability of refuges).  相似文献

Reproductive tracts were collected from three black rhinoceros and two white rhinoceros at necropsy. All females were nulliparous, except for one primiparous white rhinoceros. The animals ranged in age from 7 days to 28 years. All nulliparous animals had a constriction in the vaginal canal, which appeared to be a hymen. The primiparous female had only remnants of a hymen. The total length of the tract averaged 102 cm in three adult animals (≥21 years old). The distance from the vulva to the external cervical os averaged 40 cm in these animals. The endometrium of a 28-year-old nulliparous black rhinoceros and a 27-year-old nulliparous white rhinoceros exhibited signs of hyperplasia, whereas this condition was not present in the other animals. It is not known if this condition was related to the fertility of these animals. The cervix of the rhinoceros was firm, and the lumen followed a very tortuous path through eccentric rings of tissue. Visual examination of the ovaries revealed the presence of surface follicles on the ovaries in both species. The overall size of the reproductive tract, especially the vagina and uterine horns, and the extremely tortuous cervical lumen will present obstacles that must be overcome when developing artificial insemination and embryo transfer proceduers for use in rhinoceros.  相似文献

The effects of CCK on food intake were investigated under fixed feeding conditions in comparison to a test meal taken after 16 h of food deprivation. The experiments were performed on young adult rats (8 weeks old) as well on aged rats (23 months old). Intraperitoneal CCK-8 (8 and 40 μg/kg) significantly reduced the size of a test meal following 16-h food deprivation. This effect was independent of the age of the rats. However, under fixed feeding conditions neither of the doses used in this study reduced food intake in the young adult rats, whereas the highest dose of 40 μg/kg did so in the aged rats. These results suggest that the hypophagic effect of exogenous CCK-8 depends on experimental conditions, food intake being reduced after a period of food deprivation but not under a fixed feeding regimen in adult animals. Furthermore, the data suggest that age is a factor contributing to the complex behavioral actions of CCK, because only old animals were more susceptible to an anorectic action of CCK under the fixed feeding schedule. An explanation may lie in an interaction of other known behavioral effects of CCK (e.g., anxiogenic, mnemonic action) with its effects under the different feeding schedules.  相似文献

Summary Intraspecific differences in the patterns of heterothermy were found in captive Belding's ground squirrels that hibernated undisturbed at ambient temperatures of 5°C, 10°C, and 15°C. The timing of all entrances into and arousals from hibernation was determined from records of copper-constantan thermocouples that were mounted on the floor of each animal's nest box and connected to continuously recording potentiometers. In the absence of food, large adult males terminated hibernation spontaneously in the spring. In contrast, females and small non-breeding males (yearlings) did not stop hibernating but instead they shortened their bouts of torpor in the spring so that they aroused every three or four days. This interval of frequent arousals, termed the emergence period, lastel until the squirrels became emaciated, and it was only in the 2 or 3 weeks preceeding death (starvation period) that arousal frequency once again decreased towards midwinter values (Fig. 3). These animals terminated hibernation when fed during the emergence or starvation periods, but they were able to resume torpor if that feeding lasted less than a week.Termination of hibernation and reproductive development in males were related to the size of the animals, not their age. Males two years and older which did not deposit normal quantities of fat were like yearlings in that they had open-ended hibernation seasons and showed little testicular enlargement. Likewise, juvenile males that grew to near adult size in their first summer spontaneously terminated hibernation and had well developed testes like most older individuals. In addition, both the frequency and duration of arousals in the emergence period were related, in part, to the extent of the animals' fat reserves, such that large squirrels spent more time at high body temperatures than small individuals (Figs. 5, 6). This trend was most pronounced at high ambient temperatures.These intraspecific differences in hibernation physiology are consistent with the sex and agerelated differences in the timing of emergence above ground in nature. The increase in the time spent euthermic in the spring isinterpreted as an adaptation for increasing the opportunities for environmental assessment. The intraspecific differences in the extent of this euthermia appear to be associated with differences in the balance between the energy supplies available to an animal and its need to accelerate the use of that energy (i.e., arouse) in order to achieve an early and accurately-time emergence from the hibernaculum.  相似文献

The aim of these experiments was to investigate the type of cues used in homing processes by young Blattella germanica L. larvae. Several types of stimuli were tested: path integration with kinesthetic cues and visual orientation with landmark cues. Tests measured the escape direction of larvae from the food box after disturbance. Either type of cue alone, path integration or visual landmarks, was sufficient to allow larvae to orient towards their shelters, but they oriented more precisély when both types of cue were used. When several landmark cues (proximal and distal) were present, their relative angular position seemed important in the orientation process. Macroscopic shapes in the environment appeared to be used as a global image, memorized to reach the shelter.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to analyze the effect of the thyroid hormone on ventricular myosin during ontogenesis of mice, rats and rabbits. Hypothyroidism was induced in mice and rats by administering propylthiouracyl in drinking water. Rabbits were made hyperthyroid by chronic administration of thyroxine. The change in the thyroid state of rats and rabbits influenced young and adult animals differently depending on whether V1 or V3 was the major ventricular isomyosin form present. Measurements of Ca2+-ATPase activity of myosins from young and old control animals and from animals with changed thyroid state showed that hypothyroidism in rats is associated with a greater decrease of myosin ATPase in young rats which contain V1 isomyosin only, when compared with old rats which contain a preponderance of V3 isomyosin and less of the V1 form. In rabbits, ATPase activity of ventricular myosin was more elevated after thyroxine administration in adult rabbits, which contain V3 isomyosin only, than in young rabbits in which myosin consists of V1 and V3 isomyosins. Ventricular myosins of young and adult mice did not differ in their ATPase activity and the treatment of mice with propylthiouracyl had only slight effect on myosin ATPase. It can be concluded based on these results that the hypothesis concerning hypothyroidism inducing transformation of V1 into V3 isomyosin does not hold generally.  相似文献

The present study evaluated the effects of chronic GnRH agonist (deslorelin) treatment on sexual maturation in the male tammar wallaby. Slow-release deslorelin or placebo implants were administered to male pouch young (n = 10/group) when they were between 180 and 200 days old, to determine if disruption of the pituitary-testicular axis during development altered the timing of sexual maturation or had long-term effects on adult reproductive function. Deslorelin treatment caused retardation of testicular growth and reduced the serum FSH and testosterone concentrations between 12 and 24 mo of age. Maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis was also delayed in treated animals at 13 and 19 mo of age. Despite these alterations in the pattern and timing of neuroendocrine development, sexual maturation was not permanently blocked in these animals and deslorelin-treated animals reached sexual maturity at the same age as treated animals, as evidenced by a fully functional pituitary-testicular axis and proven fertility at 25 mo of age. The ability of the treated animals to reach puberty at the same time as control animals, despite delayed maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis, suggests that puberty in the male tammar wallaby is additionally regulated by other, gonadotropin-independent factors.  相似文献
