Examination of the sporangiospore of Coemansia aciculifera bymeans of carbon replicas, ultrathin sections, and fragmentsobtained by using physical and chemical disintegration techniquesshows the wall to consist of an outer spiny, largely amorphous, complex and an inner, largely fibrillar, complex. The outercomplex is disrupted by treatment in hot dilute alkali whereasthe inner complex is largely unaffected. Helically orientatedfibrils of the inner complex are arranged in layers. An annulusforms part of the central region of the inner complex which,it is suggested, might be especially involved in the processof germination.  相似文献

Ultrathin sections of the aerial hyphae of Linderina pennispora, fixed in glutaraldehyde, show the wall to be composed of anouter electron-dense layer and an inner less-dense one. Thefully developed septum is plugged by electrondense material.A similar septum exists at the base of the pseudophialide. Cytoplasmiccontinuity on both sides of the septum is maintained by theplasmalemma which passes through the septal pore around theperiphery of the plug. Membrane-lined vesicles may occur inthe wall, between the wall and the plasmalemma and internalto the plasmalemma. Ribosome-like particles are numerous inthe cytoplasm and endoplasmic reticulum is virtually absent.  相似文献

Cell differentiation in the mantle edge of Notosaria, Thecidelhnaand Glottidia, representing respectively, the impunctate andpunctate calcareous articulate and chitinophosphatic inarticulatebrachiopods, is described. Comparison of electron micrographssuggests that outer epithelium which secretes periostracum andmineral shell, is separated from inner epithelium by a bandof "lobate" cells, of variable width, exuding an impersistentmucopolysaccharide film or pellicle. The lobate cells alwaysoccupy the same relative position on the inner surface of theouter mantle lobe; but the outer epithelium is commonly connectedwith the inner surface of the periostracum by papillae and protoplasmicstrands which persist during mineral deposition and ensure thatboth shell and attached mantle remain in situ relative to theoutwardly expanding inner surface of the outer mantle lobe.In the prototypic brachiopod, the lobate cells are likely atfirst to have occupied the hinge of the mantel fold but laterto have been displaced into their present position by the rigidoutward growing edge of the mineral shell.  相似文献

Carbon replicas of germinating sporangiospores of Linderinapennispora show the outer wall complex to break open basally, during the phase of swelling, and the surface of the germ tubeto be smooth. Chemical treatment reveal the microfibrillar wallof the germ tube to be continuous with the microfibrillar innerwall complex of the spore. Microfibrils of the germ tube arerandornly arranged and appear to be finer than those of thespore wall. Ultra-thin sections reveal the wall of the germtube to consist of an outer electron-dense layer and an innermicrofibrillar electron-transparent layer and both layers originatein the basal region of the spore between the plasmalemma andthe inner wall complex of the spore.  相似文献

The seeds of Cuscuta pedicellata have been investigated by transmissionand scanning electron microscopy. Additional observations havebeen made on seeds of C. campestris by SEM only. The seed coatconsists of an outer single epidermis, two different palisadelayers, and an inner multiparenchyma layer. The outer epidermalwall in C. pedicellata has a thick cuticle and zones rich inpectic substances. The thicker ‘U-shaped’ cell wallsin the outer palisade layer are strengthened by a wall layerof hemicellulose. The inner palisade layer has thick walledcells with a ‘light line’. The inner cell wall ofthe compressed multiparenchyma layer has a thin cuticle. A fairlythick cuticle is positioned directly on the endosperm surface. The aleurone cell walls are different from the remaining endospermwalls. The latter are thick and believed to be of galactomannans. There is a ‘clear’ zone between the plasmalemmaand the cell wall in the aleurone cells. The embryo cells arepacked with lipids and proteins. In Cuscuta campestris mostendosperm has been absorbed during the seed development. Theembryo apex has two minute leaf primordia. The features of theCuscuta seeds are discussed in relation to functional and environmentalconditions. Although the development of the soybean ovule has been fairlywell studied, knowledge of the sequence of events in the seedcoat during the first 3 weeks after flowering is incomplete. The goal of the present study was to document, using light microscopy, the early development of the soybean seed coat with respectto changes in structure and histochemistry. At anthesis, theseed coat consists of an outer layer of cuboidal epidermal cellssurrounding several layers of undifferentiated parenchyma (whichtogether constitute the outer integument), and an inner layerof cuboidal endothelial cells (the inner integument). At 3 dpost anthesis (dpa), the inner integument has expanded to includethree to five layers of relatively large cells with thick, heavily-stainingcell walls immediately adjacent to the endothelium. By 18 dpa,the outer integument has developed into a complex of tissuescomprised of an inner layer of thick-walled parenchyma, an outerlayer of thin-walled parenchyma containing vascular tissue whichhas grown down from the lateral vascular bundles in the hilumregion, a hypodermis of hourglass cells, and palisade layer(epidermis). The thick-walled parenchyma of the inner integumenthas become completely stretched and compressed, leaving a single, deeply staining wall layer directly above the endothelium. At21 dpa, the outermost cells of the endosperm have begun to compressthe endothelium. At 45 dpa (physiological maturity) the seedcoat retains only the palisade layer, hourglass cells, and afew layers of thin-walled parenchyma. The innermost layer ofthe endosperm, the aleurone layer, adheres to the inside ofthe seed coat. This knowledge will be invaluable in future studiesof manipulation of gene expression in the seed coat to modifyseed or seed coat characteristics. Seeds of Williamsonia collected from Amarjola in the RajmahalHills, Bihar, are described. Mature seeds are found in ripe, naked, bractless fructifications. Seeds are oblong or ovate, stalked, dicotyledonous, partially endospermic, and have longmicropyles. The seed coat is differentiated into an outer coveringof tubular cells, middle parenchymatous true integument, andan inner vascularized layer which forms after fertilizationand as a result of modification of the peripheral portion ofnucellus.  相似文献

The vascular system in the underground rhizome of Alpinia speciosaL. (Zingiberaceae) is seen to be arranged in three distinctzones. (1) An inner system of ‘scattered’ vascularbundles which serial cinematography reveals to have an axialpattern conforming to the basic ‘palm’ configuration(a system of upwardly branching leaf traces with interconnections).(2) An intermediate zone comprising a thin perforated cylinderof anastomosing vascular strands having direct contact withboth roots and inner system bundles. (3) An outer system offreely-anastomosing vascular bundles. Connexion of outer andinner system occurs in the form of extensive bridging from innersystem leaf traces as they depart obliquely between the outersystem network. The interrelation of the three systems, plus root and branchinsertion, is illustrated by means of diagrammatic three-dimensionalreconstructions. The intermediate zone is intimately associatedwith root insertions and with the inner system, and is shownto obliviate potential bottlenecks at the point of lateral branchinsertion in this sympodial rhizome system. A comparison ismade with other monocotyle-donous vascular systems. Alpinia speciosa L., shell ginger, rhizome, vascular anatomy  相似文献

The functional morphology of shell infrastructure in 2 speciesof intertidal trochid was compared with that in 2 species ofnerite. The shell of Monodonta constrictais typical of the majorityof trochids. The shell is composed of 4 layers: a distal layer(calcite), anouter prismatic layer (aragonite), a nacreous layer(aragonite), and an oblique prismatic layer (aragonite). Monodontalabio lacks a distal layer and an oblique prismatic layer. Theoblique prismatic layer is replaced by an inner prismatic layerwhich forms an apertural ridge as a result of deposition andresorption. The shells of Nerita versicolor and N. tessellataconsistof 3 layers: an outer prismatic layer (calcite), a crossedlamellar layer (aragonite), and a complex crossed lamellar layer(aragonite). The complex crossed lamellar layer is covered withinclined platelets which superficially resemble the surfaceof the ique prismatic layer of trochids. In addition, the complexcrossed lamellar layer forms an apertural ridge which is similarin appearance to that of Monodonta labio. The outer surfaceof the mantle of Nerita versicolor and N. tessellata is throwninto a series of large folds which lie in contact with the inclinedplatelets of the omplex crossed lamellar layer. The interactionof the mantle folds with the inclined platelets is thought toserve as a rachet mechanism to aid in extension of themantle;a similar function has previously been proposed for trochids. The apertural ridges of Monodonta labio and Nerita are thoughtto prevent excessive desiccation when these gastropodsare exposedat low tide. 1Contribution No. 56 of the Tallahassee, Sopchoppy & GulfCoast Marine Biological Association (Received 6 July 1979;  相似文献

Structure, development and histochemistry of the seed epidermiswere studied inSolanum melongena L. andS. violaceum Ort. usinglight and scanning electron microscopy. The epidermal cellsat the endosperm mother cell stage of ovule development hadthickened outer periclinal walls, consisting of two layers,a thin inner layer, and a thick outer layer. The latter whichstained positively for pectic substances became further thickenedduring the course of seed development; more so inS. melongena. The inner layer of the outer periclinal wall also was thickenedby depositions of cellulose but remained comparatively thin. The development of the inner periclinal and anticlinal wallstook place by the uneven deposition of concentric layers. Thesesecondary wall thickenings which appeared as pyramids in transversesection stained for cellulose, lignin and pectin. Further unevensecondary thickenings near the outer part of the anticlinalwalls resulted in the formation of projections which were hair-or ribbon-like in appearance. InS. melongena, these projectionsprogressed only a short distance from the anticlinal wall. InS.violaceum, on the other hand, they grew much longer formingstriations on the inside of the outer periclinal wall. InS.melongena, partial removal of the outer periclinal wall by enzymeetching exposed to surface view a beaded appearance of the cellboundaries. Complete erosion of the outer periclinal wall revealedthe hair-like projections of the underlying anticlinal walls.InS. violaceum, enzyme treatment exposed the striations whichformed bridge-like structures over the curves in the anticlinalwalls. Naticid gastropods leave a record of predation in the form ofcharacteristic countersunk circular boreholes. We fed bivalveprey to naticids to test whether the ratio between the innerand outer borehole diameter differed among three Recent naticidspecies: Euspira heros, E. lewisii and Neverita duplicata. Fossilshells from a Miocene-aged assemblage, containing naticids previouslyidentified as E. heros and N. duplicata, were also includedin our analyses. Ratios of the inner to outer diameters of naticidboreholes in bivalve shells showed that there were significantdifferences in borehole shape between E. heros and the two otherRecent species. We found no significant differences betweenthe ratios of E. lewisii and N. duplicata; however, a principalcomponent analysis showed that boreholes distinctly clusteraccording to species. The Miocene boreholes were also distinctfrom the Recent, indicating that the Miocene naticids may bea separate species from E. heros and N. duplicata. We have shownthat there is a species-specific component to borehole geometry. This may have important implications for palaeobiological studies, because the index of borehole functionality, previously describedas an inner to outer borehole ratio of 0.5 for all naticids, may differ between species. Anatomical changes induced in the roots of barley plants (Hordeumvulgare cv. Proctor) by an applied pressure of 2 ? 104 Pa (0.2bar) have been examined; previous studies had shown that thelength of roots grown under these conditions was about 50% ofthat of unimpeded roots. Cryomicrotomy/light microscopy andscanning electron microscopy were used. Mechanical impedanceincreased the diameter of roots, this being due largely to anincreased thickness of the cortex; the number of cells in transversesection was increased and the diameter of the outer cells wasgreater though that of the inner ones was reduced.  相似文献

Fruit Development and Structure in Some Indian Bamboos   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Fruit structure and development of seven species belonging tofive genera of Indian bamboos are described. The fruit in fourspecies is a caryopsis typical of the family Poaceae. The ovuleis bitegmic; the outer surface of the cells of nucellar epidermisbecomes cutinized and forms the seed coat. Three species beara fleshy fruit with a unitegmic ovule. In a mature fruit theendosperm is either completely absorbed by the embryo or ispresent only in small quantity. The developing embryo comesin direct contact with the fruit wall due to the disintegrationof the nucellus and integument. The embryo is covered by a thickbrown mat from the disorganized cells of the inner layers ofthe fruit wall. A new species of Oxychilus Fitzinger from the Ligurian Apennines(Italy) is described. The new species is particularly characterizedby its penial complex which has a very slender proximal peniswith variable inner sculpture and a widened distal penis. Theproximal penis inner structure consists of a series of longitudinalpleats which may often be crenulated, undulated or fragmentedto form rows of papillae, providing new evidence to supportthe opinion that this is not a valid diagnostic character forseparating Oxychilus into the nominal subgenus and OrtiziusForcart. Consequently Ortizius is herein proposed as a juniorsynonym of Oxychilus s. str. (Received 5 July 1990; accepted 4 March 1991)  相似文献

The apertural wall in tricolpate pollen of Linum grandiflorumwas investigated in order to understand its functioning duringdesiccation and rchydration. Whole and sectioned pollen grainswere studied with light or electron microscopy and by cytochemicalmeans. The areas of the apertures were examined in fresh drypollen, in grains moistened on agar gel or removed from compatiblestigmas, and in pollen from mature undehisced anthers The intine was found to consist of an inner ß-glucanlayer and an outer pectic layer. At the apertures the pecticlayer is thickened and overlaid by a ß-glucan layer. The pectinaceous intine stains red with basic fuchsin. The presenceof a third wall layer, the medine, was not confirmed. The aperturalintine thickenings possess considerable imbibitional capacityand at rehydration they appear as swollen lenticular bodies A procedure is described for obtaining intact exine free grains(EFG's) and whole, separated exines of L. grandiflorum. Invariably, the released EFG's consisted of protoplasts encased in the cellulosicintine. In most grains the outer intine remained attached tothe separated exine In L. grandiflorum the outer wall of the aperture expands whilethe protoplast and endintine are still infolded. Apparently, the exintine becomes detached from the endintine during desiccationand re-attaches at rehydration. It is suggested that the transientdetachment controls the influx of water into the vegetativecell Except for morph-specific exine processes no differences instructure of the aperture wall or its functioning at rehydrationwere observed between pin and thrum grains Pollen wallM, apertures, exintine, exine free grains, rehydration, desiccation, Linum grandiflorum  相似文献

The new genus Atebbania is described for a new hydrobiid species,A. bernasconii, which lives in groundwaters of southern Morocco.Of the Hydrobiidae genera with known shell and anatomy Moitessieriais the closest to Atebbania. The two share the following characters:shell elongate; teleoconch surface with evident microsculpture;seminal receptacle absent. Atebbania is distinguished from Moitessieriaby: shell ovate; penis with a) apical stylet, b) one lobe bentdownward on left (inner) side and c) penial duct running nearthe right (outer) side; posterior end of foot indented. Atebbaniabernasconii n. sp., lives in a limited area, the Tiznit plainin southern Morocco. Other stygobiont hydrobiids from otherareas of Morocco are currently being studied. None of them appearsto be closely related to A. bernasconii or to the species ofMoitessieria (Received 10 February 1998; accepted 30 April 1998)  相似文献

Strip-shaped projections are present at the cytoplasmic faceof the outer membrane of the generative cell in Amaryllis belladonna. This outer membrane is actually the inner plasma membrane ofthe vegetative cell which surrounds the generative cell. Theprojections are situated in groups and arranged parallel toeach other. Their predominant orientation is perpendicular tothe long axis of the generative cell. The projections are approximately35 nm high, and on average equally spaced 40 nm apart. Theirmaximum observed length, estimated from grazing sections ofgenerative cells, is 250 nm. The structure, ontogeny and cytochemistry of stipular colletersof Gardenia gummifera are described. The repeated division ofa few adaxial protodermal and subprotodermal cells of the youngstipule and the subsequent elongation by the latter resultsin the formation of a standard-type colleter. A developed colleterhas outer palisade-like glandular cells covered by a continuouscuticle and inner layers of elongated columnar cells. Enzymelevels in the palisade-like epidermal cells in the colletersindicate their active role in secretion. The secretion is resinous, occurs in the young colleters, and accumulates between the cellsand the cuticle. The cuticle later ruptures and releases thesecretory product, which drenches the young shoot apex. Gardenia gummifera L, stipule, colleters, resin, ontogeny, cytochemistry  相似文献

THE PALLIAL EYES OF CTENOIDES FLORIDANUS (BIVALVIA: LIMOIDEA)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The structure of the pallial eye in the Limidae has neverbeen elucidated properly, largely because they are difficultto see among the mass of surrounding mantle tentacles and becausethey are few, small, and lose their pigmentation when preserved.Possibly two eye types are present, simple cup-shaped receptorsin species of Lima, like those seen in the Arcoida, and morecomplex invaginated ones in Ctenoides. The pallial eyes (;18on both lobes) of Ctenoides floridanus are formed by invaginationof the middle mantle fold at the periostracal groove, so thatall its contained structures are derived from the outer andlight is perceived through the inner epithelia of this fold. The eye comprises a simple multicellular lens and a photoreceptiveepithelium beneath it of lightly pigmented cells and alternatingvacuolated, support cells. In some species of the Arcoidea, Limopsoidea and Pterioidea, pallialeyes occur on the outer mantle fold and thus beneath the periostracum(and shell). The pallial eyes of Ctenoides floridanus and otherpterioideans, e.g. species of the Pectinidae, occur on the middlefold and may thus have improved vision. In the Cardiodea, Tridacniidaeand Laternulidae (Anomalodesmata) pallial eyes occur on theinner folds. There is thus a loose phylogenetic trend, in which Ctenoidesis a critical link, of increasing eye sophistication correlatedwith the historical age of the clades possessing them.
