SYNOPSIS. Haemogregarina faiyumensis n. sp., a parasite of toads, Bufo regularis, in Faiyuni Province, Egypt, U.A.R., is described. In a survey of 689 toads from various localities in Cairo, Giza and Faiyurn provinces, only 3 out of 13 toads from Kom O Shim near Faiyum were infected. This species, known only by blood forms (most probably gametocytes) of two different staining reactions, is 13-17 μ long and 4-5 μ wide, with an average of 15.5 × 4.5 μ. The nucleus is typically subcircular and 3-5 × 3–5 μ, with an average of 4.5 × 3.9 μ.  相似文献

Carothers , Zane B. (U. Kentucky, Lexington.) Observation on the procambium and primary phloem of Pelargonium domesticum. Amer. Jour. Bot. 46(6): 397–404. Illus. 1959.—Stems of Pelargonium domesticum, a shrubby member of the Geraniaceae, were studied ontogenetically. It was found that a continuous cylinder of procambium is formed within the terminal millimeter of the young shoot. The pattern of trace procambium within this region is illustrated. Three traces are associated with each leaf; nodes are trilacunar. The prominent, sclerous “pericycle,” a diagnostic character of the family, actually consists of protophloem fibers. Commonly septate, these cells may contain as many as 4 nucleate protoplasts. The fibers average 1177 μ in length and 31 μ in diameter. Fiber walls average 5 μ in thickness, the inner pit apertures 6 μ in length. Metaphloem sieve tube elements averaged 203 μ in length.  相似文献

Background

A complex of three cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) Neurexin IV(Nrx IV), Contactin (Cont) and Neuroglian (Nrg) is implicated in the formation of septate junctions between epithelial cells in Drosophila. These CAMs are interdependent for their localization at septate junctions and e.g. null mutation of nrx IV or cont induces the mislocalization of Nrg to the baso-lateral membrane. These mutations also result in ultrastructural alteration of the strands of septate junctions and breakdown of the paracellular barrier. Varicose (Vari) and Coracle (Cora), that both interact with the cytoplasmic tail of Nrx IV, are scaffolding molecules required for the formation of septate junctions.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS Fecal samples from 130 domestic cats from Illinois were examined for coccidia. Three species of Isospora were found: (1) I. felis Wenyon, 1923, with oocysts 38-51 by 27-39 μ with a mean of 41.6 by 30.5 μ and sporocysts 20-26 by 17-22 μ with a mean of 22.6 by 18.4 μ; it was found in 13% of the cats; (2) I. rivolta (Grassi, 1879) Wenyon, 1923, with oocysts 21-28 by 18-23 μ with a mean of 25.0 by 21.1 μ, and sporocysts 14-16 by 10-13 μ with a mean of 15.2 by 11.6 μ; it was found in 3% of the cats; and (3) I. bigemina (Stiles, 1891) Lühe, 1906, with oocysts 12-15 by 10-13 μ with a mean of 13.2 by 11.8 μ. and sporocysts 8-10 by 6-8 μ with a mean of 8.8 by 6.5 μ it was found in 1.5% of the cats. Four coccidia-free puppies 1.5 months old were inoculated with 100,000 oocysts each of I. felis from the cat, but patent infections did not occur. Partial development of I. felis was not seen in tissue sections of the small intestine of a 5th pup killed 96 hours after inoculation with 150,000 I. felis oocysts. This coccidium is therefore presumably host-specific.  相似文献

Gap and septate junctions were examined in embryos of Manduca sexta (tobacco hornworm). The junctions observed were similar in structure to those reported for adult insect tissues. In the epidermis typical pleated septate junctions were found. Associated with the pleated septate junctions were inverted gap junctions which had irregularly arranged particles and pits. In the midgut typical smooth septate junctions were found. Associated with these septate junctions were gap junctions which had a regular hexagonal packing pattern. This codistribution of gap and septate junction types is discussed in light of current theories that the gap junction types are alternative forms of the same structure in different metabolic environments. In addition to these gap and septate junctions a new junction, perhaps a modified pleated septate junction, is described.  相似文献

Drechsler , Charles . (U.S.D.A., Plant Industry Sta., Beltsville, Md.) A nematode-capturing phycomycete with distally adhesive branches and proximally imbedded fusiform conidia. Amer. Jour. Bot. 49(10): 1089–1095. Illus. 1962.—A fungus newly described as Acaubpage pectospora, though some uncertainty remains as to its taxonomic relation, captures nematodes (Bunonema sp.) by means of small sticky knobs disposed on the surface of the substratum, where they are supported on upcurved tips of continuous subsurface hyphae and of short subsurface hyphal branches. After effecting capture, the knob grows out at its apex and produces a clavate or dolioform appressorium together with an infection-bulb broadly intruded into the animal. From the infection-bulb assimilative hyphae are extended lengthwise through the fleshy interior. Asexual reproduction ensues through development of solitary, colorless, slenderly fusiform conidia, gradually but markedly tapered toward both ends, mostly about 200 μ long and 11 μ wide. Each conidium is connected with a subsurface hypha by an isthmus about 1 μ wide. While its cornuate proximal end is securely imbedded in the substratum, the conidium for about seven-eights of its length extends erectly into the air, thereby contrasting with the submerse elongated “gemmae” of Zoophagus tentaclum and of some other robust rotifer-capturing fungi that have been referred to Z. insidians.  相似文献

Measurements of anthers of five fertile lines of Sorghum vulgare Pers. indicate that the tapetum decreases in radial extent following the two-celled dyad stage of meiosis. At a mature pollen stage 78% of the anthers of fertile lines and 88% of those of a fertility restorer line have a narrow tapetum measuring between 4 and 16 μ radially, with the remainder having a degenerate tapetum less than 4 μ wide. In isogenic sterile lines, approximately 68% of the anthers have a narrow tapetum less than 16 μ wide at a “prepollen” stage, which represents the terminal stage in the sterile lines, whereas the remaining 32% have a well-developed or enlarged tapetum measuring over 28 μ in radial width. Tapeta in the sterile lines have a variation in width and in morphology not encountered in fertile lines and presumably display the variable manifestations of nuclear-cytoplasmic interaction characteristic of cytoplasmic-genetic male sterility.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Oocysts of Eimeria oreamni, E. montanaensis n. sp. and E. ernsti n. sp. were present in a fecal sample collected from a male Rocky Mountain goat Oreamnos americanus in Ravalli County, Montana. Oocysts of E. oreamni were nearly identical to those originally described from this host. Oocysts of E. montanaensis were 15-23 by 13-19 μ (mean 18.9 by 15.2 μ), with sporocysts 8-12 by 4–7 μ(mean 9.9 by 5.2 μ). Oocysts of E. ernsti were 28-37 by 19-26 μ (mean 32.9 by 23.0 μ), with sporocysts 14-20 by 6-9 μ (mean 16.7 by 7.3 μ). A distinct micropyle and micropylar cap were present in E. ernsti.  相似文献

The occurrence of Actinophrys sol, a planktonic heliozoan, in Chesapeake Bay was monitored over a four-year period (1988–1991). Actinophrys sol was widely-distributed throughout Chesapeake Bay and could exceed densities of 5,000 cells liter ?1. It was most abundant during the warmer months. Feeding experiments were conducted with field populations of heliozoa using 1-μm fluorescent microspheres to label ciliate prey. Two ciliates, a small Strobilidium sp. (30 μ in diameter) and a Pleuronema sp. (45 μ length), were the primary ciliate-prey items in the water column when the experiments were conducted, although a wide range of ciliate taxa was ingested. Two other ciliates not present in situ, a Cyclidium sp. (20 μ length) and a Uronema sp. (40 μ length), were also labeled and added at various concentrations to field populations of plankton containing A. sol. Heliozoan ingestion rates on in situ prey at concentrations of 30 Strohilidium and one Pleuronema ml?1 were 0.2 to 0.3 prey heliozoan?1 hour?1. Ingestion rates increased to a maximum of 1.2 prey heliozoan ?1 hour?1 with additions of 100 Uronema ml?1. A mean clearance rate of 0.15 ml heliozoan?1 day?1 did not change with increasing prey abundance. The abundance and distribution of A. sol suggests that these sarcodines may exert strong grazing pressure on the planktonic ciliate populations of Chesapeake Bay at certain times of the year, and may be important in shaping the ciliate community composition and distribution.  相似文献

Four hemocyte types have been identified in the late last larval instar of Galleria mellonella. Plasmatocytoids are round to spindle shaped cells, 10–20 μ long and 5–10 μ wide. The cytoplasm contains no distinguishing inclusions. Golgi complexes, rough endoplasmic reticulum and free ribosomes are abundant. Granular hemocytes are oval shaped cells, 10–20 μ long and 5–10 μ wide. The granules, their most characteristic feature, have a diameter of 0.2 μ, a microtubular sub-structure, and are made up of acidic mucosubstances. Lipid droplets may be present in these cells at some stage of development. These cells appear to be phagocytic. Spherule cells are oval shaped, 15–20 μ long and 5–10 μ wide. The spherules, approximately 2 μ in diameter, have a highly ordered substructure and are made up of acidic mucosubstances. Oenocytoids are the largest cells, 20 by 40 μ. The cytoplasm contains mostly free ribosomes and microtubules.  相似文献

A new fungus collected from submerged wood in tropical forest streams in Panama and Thailand is described as a new genus and species in the Jahnulales. This fungus, Megalohypha aqua-dulces, is described based on ascospore morphology, which differs substantially from that of the other genera in the Jahnulales. It has these morphological features: ascomata hyaline, translucent, with subtending, wide, brown, septate, stoloniferous hyphae; peridium of large, thin-walled cells; hamathecium of septate pseudoparaphyses; asci clavate, fissitunicate, 8-spored; and ascospores 1-septate, brown, rough-walled, with longitudinal sulcate striations. An interesting feature of Megalohypha aqua-dulces, which it shares with some other taxa in Jahnulales, is the presence of both sessile and stalked fruiting bodies. In addition, the stalks have morphology that consists of a wide hypha with a narrower hypha apparently enclosed within and the stalks are strongly constricted at the septa.  相似文献

The effects of relative humidity on hemolymph osmolarity and on kidney ultrastructure are explored in Helix aspersa. The snails are active at 95% relative humidity and less active at 50% relative humidity. The hemolymph osmotic pressure increases with the decrease of relative humidity. Pericardial fluid and hemolymph collected from the heart contain similar amounts of total proteins, and both fluids display hemocyanin molecules in negatively stained preparations. When the snails are kept in an atmosphere of 95% relative humidity, numerous wide intercellular spaces are observed in the single-layered-kidney epithelium. The spaces are almost absent when the snails are kept at 50% relative humidity. It is suggested that prourine is formed through a paracellular junctional pathway across the single-layered kidney epithelium, and that the pericardial cavity is not the site of prourine formation. The septate junctions joining the kidney epithelial cells form a continuous belt of intimate contact in the paracellular pathway of prourine. Long septate junctions with many septa are present in the kidneys of snails from the atmosphere of 50% relative humidity, whereas short septate junctions with fewer septa are found in the kidneys of snails from the atmosphere of 95% relative humidity. It is possible that the longer septate junctions with many septa reduce prourine formation across the kidney sac epithelium.  相似文献

Summary Root nodules ofDryas drummondii are of the coralloid type (Alnus type). The endophyte is present in the middle cortical cells of the root-nodule tissue. Transmission electron micrographs revealed an actinorhizal endophyte with septate hyphae and non-septate spherical or ovoid vesicles. Vesicles always possess at the base a septum; septa formation in the endophyte is always associated with the presence of mesosomes. Branching of the endophyte is not necessarily correlated with septum formation. Hyphal structures are more prominent in the apical part of the root nodule and vesicles are more numerous in a broad zone below this. In the middle and towards the base of the root nodule the endophytic structures appear in a stage of disintegration. Vesicles appear in a broad region near the periphery of the host cell and regularly show no strict orientation towards the host-cell wall. In the center of the host cells only hyphae occur. In the intercellular spaces between the host cells theFrankia endophyte produces spore-like structures although the outline of the sporangia is often faint. The coralloid root ofRubus ellipticus shows characteristically a basal rootlet initiated below the dichotomous branching of the nodular lobes, but extending beyond the root nodule. The endophyte is only present in the outer cortex of the root nodule in a 1–2 cell wide layer. This endophytic layer is bounded, internally as well as externally, with a 4–5 cell wide layer of tannin-filled host cells. The implications of this situation are discussed. Tannin-filled cells occur regularly inRubus species and their arrangement has been used for taxonomic purposes within the genus. TheRubus endophyte is aFrankia species with septate hyphae and distinctly septate spherical vesicles. The ultrastructure of the vesicles of theRubus endophyte is very similar to that of theAlnus endophyte.  相似文献

Morphology and recordings of electrical activity of Kuruma shrimp (Penaeus japonicus) giant medullated nerve fibers were carried out. A pair of giant fibers with external diameter of about 120 μ and 10 μ in myelin thickness were found in the ventral nerve cord. The diameter of the axon is about 10 μ. Thus there is a wide gap between the axon and the external myelin sheath. Each axon is doubly coated directly by Schwann cells and indirectly by the myelin sheath layer which is produced by those Schwann cells. Impulse conduction velocities of these giant fibers showed a range between 90–210 m/sec at about 22°C. Large action potentials (up to 113 mV, rise time of 0.16–0.3 msec, maximum rate of rise of 650–1250 V/sec, half decay time of 0.2–0.3 msec, maximum rate of fall of 250–450 V/sec and total duration of less than 1.5 msec) could be obtained by inserting microelectrodes or by longitudinal insertion of 25 μ diameter capillary electrodes into the gap but no DC-potential difference was observed across the myelin sheath. Transmyelin electrical parameters were very favorable for fast impulse conduction: myelin resistance of 3 × 104 Ω cm2; time constant of 0.38 msec; myelin capacitance of 1.35 × 10?8 F/cm2; gap fluid resistivity of 23 Ω cm. The existence of nodes of Ranvier could not be demonstrated morphologically, but electrophysiological evidence suggests that a type of saltatory conduction occurs in these giant fibers.  相似文献

The cell contacts between follicle cells, and follicle cells and oocytes of egg-laying populations of Helisoma duryi and non-egg-laying populations of H. trivcolvis have been studied. Scanning electron microscopy reveals that four to six follicle cells envelop a single developing oocyte. Thin sections and lanthanum impregnations demonstrate apical zonulae adherentes followed by winding pleated-type septate junctions between follicle cells. Gap junctions and septate junctions have been found between follicle cells and vitellogenic oocytes. Freeze-fracture replicas show relatively wide sinuous rows of septate junctional particles, and nemerous large gap junctional particle aggregates on the P-face between vitellogenic oocytes and follicle cells. Septate and gap junctions between immature or nonvitellogenic oocytes and follicle cells are fewer compared to those in vitellogenic oocytes. Similarly, the junctional complexes are less developed in non-egg-laying H. trivolvis compared to those in egg-laying H. duryi. It is possible that intimate interaction between follicle cells and a developing oocyte is necessary for the maturation of the oocyte. The junctional complexes could be involved in the interaction of the follicle cells and the oocyte, and they must disassemble at the onset of ovulation. Rhombic particle arrays and nonjunctional ridges of particles have been found in the basal part of the oolemma.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the pollen morphology of 10 species and 1 variety of Loxostemon in China. The pollen grains were all examined under light microscope. The pollen grains of Loxostemon are subspheroidal, spheroidal or prolate, 18--33×11.8-28 μ in size, 3-colpate, colpi 15-21 μ long and 1-2 μ wide. The exine is 1.5-3 μ thick with two indistinct or distinct layers. All the pollen grains are generally reticulate under light microscope. They are distinctly or obscurely and finely reticulate. L. axillus and L. repens are generally similar in gross morphology, but the pollen grains of these two species are different. The pollen grains of L. axillus are regularly polygonally reticulate, colpi are acute-ended and the exine is about 3 μ thick, whereas those of L.repens are irregularly polygonally reticulate, colpi are enlarged at both ends and the exine is about 2.8 μ thick. L. incanus and L. stenolobus appear to have similar gross morphology, but the pollen grains of the former have exines with two distinct layers and a densely and finely reticulate ornamentation and those of the latter have exines with two indistinct layers and a flexuosely reticulate ornamentation.  相似文献

An undescribed ascomycete similar to species in the Aliquandostipitaceae (Jahnulales, Dothideomycetes) was collected from submerged wood in a freshwater swamp in Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida. The characteristic features of the new species are as follows: (i) ascomata are small, sessile, light brown, globose to subglobose, papillate, and anchored to the substrate by wide, brown, septate and subtending hyphae; peridial wall is composed of 1 to 2 layers of large, angular cells with large lumens; (ii) asci are ovoid to broadly clavate, and fissitunicate; (iii) ascospores are one-septate, fusiform, multiguttulate, pale brown, surrounded by a fusiform gelatinous sheath, and equipped with numerous filamentous appendages around the midseptum. The new fungus is most similar to Aliquandostipite crystallinus, from which it differs in overall smaller size and morphology. This new fungus is described and illustrated herein as A. minuta.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown the leafy liverwort Cephaloziella varians to associate consistently with fungi, typically the ericoid mycorrhizal symbiont Rhizoscyphus ericae, across a wide latitudinal gradient in the maritime and sub-Antarctic. Hitherto, however, there are no quantitative data on the intensity of colonisation of C. varians by fungal structures in the natural environment and how colonisation might vary with changing environmental conditions. A study is hence reported showing that the frequency of colonisation by fungal structures of C. varians alters along a latitudinal transect from South Georgia (54° S, 38° W) to Moutonnée Valley on Alexander Island (71° S, 68° W). The percentage of stem length colonised by dark septate (DS) hyphae increased significantly along the transect, from 30% at South Georgia to 97% at Moutonnée Valley. In contrast, the percentage of stem length colonised by hyaline hyphae decreased significantly, from 85% at South Georgia to 13% at Moutonnée Valley, and that colonised by hyphal coils similarly decreased from 71% at the former location to 15% at the latter. The frequencies of DS hyphae were negatively associated with mean annual and seasonal air temperatures, whereas those of hyaline septate hyphae and hyphal coils were positively associated with air temperatures. Coils at northerly locations were more convoluted than those at southerly locations. The data indicate that hyphal coils, usually associated with nutrient exchange between partners in ericoid mycorrhizas, do form in C. varians tissues in the maritime and sub-Antarctic, but that the frequency of these structures diminishes in colder habitats.  相似文献

Laminaria saccharina Lamour. sporophytes were grown in enriched and synthetic media through a range of nitrate concentrations, There was an approximately linear relationship between growth and nutrient concentration up to 10 μ substrate concentration. The half-saturation constant (K2) was ca. 1.4 μ NO3-. The internal levels of NO3- increased at substrate concentrations above 10 μM b>3- and reached levels several thousand times higher than the surrounding medium. Thus there is evidence for luxury consumption of NOsb>3-. The chlorophyll content and photosynthetic capacities of plants also increased with increasing external NO3- The ecological implications of this work are considered.  相似文献
