Acetocarmine squashes of root tips have demonstrated that 2n = 20 and 38 in Saxifraga virginiensis. These contrast with the earlier reported count of 2n = 28 for this species. In several populations supernumerary chromosomes were detected. Both intrapopulational and interpopulational variation in supernumerary chromosome number were detected, with the largest number of supernumerary chromosomes observed being six. Because these supernumerary chromosomes are equal in size to many of the smaller A chromosomes during mitotic metaphase, the presence of supernumerary chromosomes in this species could not be ascertained by analysis of mitotic metaphase preparations alone. During mitotic prophase, however, the supernumerary chromosomes of S. virginiensis are highly heterochromatic, appearing more densely coiled and darkly stained than the A chromosomes. This characteristic facilitated the recognition of supernumerary chromosomes in this species. The similarity in size of A and supernumerary chromosomes during mitotic metaphase and the observation of six supernumerary chromosomes in one population suggest that the count of 2n = 28 reported earlier for S. virginiensis may actually be a misinterpretation of 2n = 20 plus 8 supernumerary chromosomes. Furthermore, these findings and the observation of this same supernumerary chromosome phenomenon in other species of Saxifraga raise the possibility that some of the many disparate chromosome counts attributed to aneuploidy in the large genus Saxifraga may also be the result of misinterpretations of supernumerary chromosomes as A chromosomes.  相似文献

We developed eight polymorphic microsatellite loci for Collinsia verna (Veronicaceae). In a sample of 18–35 individuals from a single population, we found two to 15 alleles per locus (mean 8.3). We also tested these loci for cross‐amplification in all 22 species in the tribe Collinseae. Overall, more than half the species in the tribe amplified one microsatellite while three species most closely related to C. verna (Collinsia violacea, Collinsia parviflora and Collinsia grandiflora) amplified multiple microsatellite loci. These microsatellite loci will be used in future studies of mating system in this tribe and other quantitative genetic and population genetic studies.  相似文献

Snow , Richard . (U. California, Davis.) Cytogenetic studies in Clarkia, section Primigenia. I. A cytological survey of Clarkia amoena. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(4): 337–348. Illus. 1963.—Clarkia amoena (2n = 14) shows great cytological diversity based on reciprocal translocations. About ½ the plants sampled were heterozygotes; in 2 of the subspecies the frequency was as high as ⅔. The metaphase configurations were varied, including rings of 4, 6, 8, 4 + 4, 6 + 4, and more unusual types forming a chain of 3 + a univalent or a chain of 4 + a univalent. The latter have only 13 chromosomes but are not true monosomies. Some plants with supernumerary chromosomes were found, in addition to a plant with only 12 chromosomes which was derived from a “monosomic” type. From crosses of various homozygous lines to a standard strain, it was found that the standard end arrangement of chromosomes occurs widely and commonly throughout the species. A minimum of 7 different end arrangements, giving a ring of 4 with the standard strain, and 1 giving a ring of 6, account for the chromosome pairing found in interstrain crosses. No doubt more would be found with further testing. Some of the translocations may be components of adaptive polymorphic systems, though there is no proof of this yet. No balanced lethal systems similar to those in the closely related genus Oenothera were found.  相似文献

Illus. 1961.—The behavior of supernumerary chromosomes was investigated in 2 plants. In 1, the number of supernumeraries was highly variable in both somatic and meiotic cells, presumably as a result of somatic non-disjunction. In the second plant, the number of supernumerary chromosomes was less variable, but an end-to-end association of a pair of supernumeraries and a regular bivalent was observed in a small percentage of the microsporocytes at zygotene and pachytene. This end-to-end association apparently resulted in a permanent fusion of the supernumerary and regular chromosome ends in some instances because the union persisted throughout both meiotic divisions. There was no evidence of normal pairing between the supernumeraries and regular chromosomes.  相似文献

Amblytropidia australis and Dichroplus elongatus were found to be polymorphic for supernumerary heterochromatin. In both, basic karyotypes are 2n=22+XO in males.Mitotically unstable extra chromosomes were detected in a population of A. australis. The Bs are telocentric and their number varies from O to 2 within individuals. Mean frequencies of interstitial and total chiasmata at diplotene were compared between individuals with and without Bs. The mean frequency of interstitial chiasmata increases with the number of Bs per cell.A supernumerary terminal segment in S10 pair was observed in a heterozygous condition in several individuals of D. elongatus. The localization and frequency of chiasmata at diplotene were studied. A cultivar ofChlorophytum elatum var.variegatum (spider plant, 2n=28) from Agra, India, is characterized by one, two or three supernumerary divisions of the cells of the microspore tetrad. During these divisions the chromosomes neither synapse nor split, nor are any spindles formed. The distribution of chromosomes is random, with the result that the microspores vary considerably in chromosome number. Only a small percentage of the pollen produced has the full haploid set. The genetics of supernumerary divisions is still under investigation.  相似文献

Meiosis was examined in PMC of 138 plants of the outbreeder Triticum speltoides (=Aegilops speltoides) and 175 plants of the closely related T. longissimum (= Ae. longissima), which is a selfer. Nine of the T. speltoides plants, originating fra two of the five Israeli populations under study, contained B chromosomes in addition to the normal complements (2n = 14). No supernumerary chromosomes were found in T. longissimum. — Plants were found carrying 1, 2 or 3 B chromosomes, which seem to be stable among PMC. Their size is 2/3 of the average length of the regular chromosomes, but otherwise they are similar in appearance. Pairing between Bs is common as bivalents and trivalents, but whether this association is ehiasmatic is not clear. There is a slight reduction in chiasma frequency of the regular complement in B-carriers compared to other plants from the same population. — The only other species in the wheat group reported to have B chromosomes in natural populations is also an outbreeder, namely T. tripsacoides (=Ae. mutica). The connection between outbreeding and B chromosomes might be significant.  相似文献

Specimens of the endemic New Zealand frog Leiopelma hochstetteri from Tapu on North Island were found to have six, nine or ten supernumerary chromosomes in their karyotypes. In comparison with previously published data, these results further indicate probable geographic variation in supernumerary chromosome number between populations. Increased numbers of supernumeraries in these frogs is correlated with apparent decrease of centromeric heterochromatin in the five large metacentric chromosomes of the karyotype, as detected by C-banding. Meiosis was abnormal in a male with a high number of supernumeraries. In lampbrush preparations from a single female with one supernumerary univalent, the supernumerary often had a denser, beaded appearance in comparison with the regular bivalents. Evidence is consistent with the notion that these supernumerary chromosomes may have arisen from centromeric fragments.  相似文献

Chromosomes of Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (10 males and 20 females) collected from a tributary of the Tietê River (Botucatu, S.P. Brazil) were examined using kidney and testicular cells. Both males and females presented 2n=50 chromosomes and 1 to 8 small supernumerary microchromosomes. C-banding demonstrated positively stained heterochromatic blocks in almost every chromosome and a pattern of interstitial bands located in the same position in relation to the centromere on the long arm of a large number of chromosomes. Two large NORs were detected in pair 19 of all the silver-stained metaphases; zero to 6 additional small NORs were detected in other chromosomes. A general survey of the occurrence of supernumerary chromosomes in fishes is presented.  相似文献

Autoradiographic and cytological investigations were performed to elucidate the role of supernumerary chromosomes (E chromosomes) in the oogenesis of Wachtliella persicariae. In contrast to the compact S chromosomes, these extra chromosomes are despiralized during the entire oogenesis (Fig. 1) and synthesize RNA (Fig. 10c). As no nucleoli could be found in the oocyte nucleus, the E chromosomes are thought to produce messenger RNA. — The S chromosomes are inactive in the first period of oocyte growth and surrounded by concentric lamellate bodies (Fig. 4). After degeneration of the nurse chamber, they also despiralize and synthesize RNA. — In certain stages of oocyte development, there is a striking correspondence in the number of bundles of the E chromosomes with the haploid number of the S chromosomes (Fig. 5). Specimens of the populations Hamburg and Wilhelmshaven of the ratflea N. fasciatus exhibit variation of the chromosome number in the range of 2n=20–23 and 2n=20–27 respectively, resulting from individual differences in the number of supernumerary chromosomes beyond the basic chromosome complement of 2n=20. The supernumerary chromosomes are mostly euchromatic and partly or completely homologous to each other and to the 10. pair of the basic complement. The numerical variation in the population Wilhelmshaven is produced by recurrent mitotic non-disjunction of the supernumerary chromosomes in anaphase II of spermatogenesis. Constant mitotic non-disjunction and preferential segregation of the supernumerary chromosomes towards the pronucleus leads to their accumulation in the population.—A multiple sex-chromosome mechanism of the type X1 X2 Y1 Y2 (male): X1 X1 X2 X2 (female) has been demonstrated for the population Wilhelmshaven of N. fasciatus. The X1 X2 Y1 Y2-chain of four is restricted to the male meiosis, in oogenesis two sex bivalents (X1 X1 and X2 X2) are formed. — The cytogenetic data presented do not support the concept of a closer phylogenetic relationship between the Aphaniptera and Nematocera, but do not preclude the possibility of a kinship of Aphaniptera and Neomecoptera.  相似文献

This work examines the cytogeographical distribution, the morphological characters, and the karyotypes of threeCrepis species endemic to Greece (C. sibthorpiana, C. incana, andC. heldreichiana). C. sibthorpiana is diploid (2n = 2x = 8),C. incana is diploid (2n = 2x = 8) and tetraploid (2n = 4x = 16, 17), andC. heldreichiana is always dekaploid (2n = 10x = 40). The Giemsa positive bands, usually pairs of dots, are mainly centromeric inC. incana, while they are terminal inC. sibthorpiana (on the short arm of all chromosomes) and inC. heldreichiana (on both arms of all chromosomes). Intercalary C-bands are scarce and usually variable within karyotypes, individuals, and species. The most variable karyotype both in Feulgen and Giemsa preparations is that ofC. incana, in which also supernumerary chromosomes were observed, which are polysomic to standard set members. On the basis of morphological and karyological data the evolutionary relationships among the threeCrepis taxa are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Autotriploidy is described in a female of the endemic New Zealand frog Leiopelma hochstetteri. This frog was found to have 3n=33 chromosomes plus 2 supernumerary chromosomes. All the chromosomes in the karyotype of this species contained C-band heterochromatin at the centromeres. A prominent C-band was found to be associated with a secondary constriction on chromosome no. 7. The supernumerary chromosomes in this species appear to be mitotically stable and contain C-band heterochromatin at the centromeres. From the limited data presently available, the triploid individual may have resulted from the fertilisation of a diploid egg produced when the second meiotic division had been suppressed.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers are reported from 67 populations of 36 taxa, mostly in Phoradendron. The basic number is 14 in Phoradendron and probably also in Arceuthobium. The 4 species of Struthanthus for which chromosome numbers are recorded suggest that the basic number is 8. Numbers of n = 8 and n = 10 have been reported for Psittacanthus. In Phoradendron the 22 taxa examined are all diploid, although 1 instance of polyploidy was discovered. Objects interpreted as supernumerary chromosomes were discovered in a number of species of Phoradendron; no evidence of sex chromosomes previously reported in Phoradendron was observed. The Loranthaceae have chromosomes comparable in size to the largest in the plant kingdom.  相似文献

The gynogenetic population of Prussian carp Carassius gibelio in Lake Pamvotis (north‐west Greece) included a small percentage of males (2–3%). Cytogenetic analysis revealed heterogeneity of the population at the ploidy level: all females were triploid (modal chromosome number 156–162 chromosomes) while the males were either triploid (modal number 156–158 chromosomes) or tetraploid (modal number 200–214 chromosomes). Morphometric analysis revealed significant differences in body shape among these three groups. The males were more slender than females, while the triploid males could be discriminated from the tetraploid by the morphology of their caudal peduncle. The males attained a significantly lower asymptotic standard length (LS) (25·04 cm) than females (29·75 cm) and had lower exponent b of the LS and mass relationship. Under laboratory conditions, intraspecific crossings of C. gibelio males with females could give viable all‐female offspring; in comparison with goldfish Carassius auratus males, the fertility of the C. gibelio males was generally reduced but remained highly variable among individuals.  相似文献

Three widely separated Malayan populations of Black rat, Rattus rattus diardii (Jentink), were found to comprise individuals with supernumerary (or B) chromosomes. The number of supernumeraries varied from 0 to 4. The incidence of B's in the three populations did not differ significantly. There was also no difference between the two sexes.  相似文献

Metaphase-I chromosome association in PMCs of five F1 hybrids 6x-triticale x T. turgidum (2n=5x=35 and genomes AABBR), and 13 plants from their backross or self offspring is reported. In wheat 18 chromosome arms and in rye 14 arms were recognized after C-banding and individually studied. Plants of backcross and F2 showed variability for number and type of rye chromosomes, having in common the 28 durum wheat chromosomes (AABB). By testing meiotic association in plants with different rye chromosome constitutions, significant negative correlations were found. A clear negative effect of rye heterochromatin on pairing in wheat chromosomes is observed, the influence being more pronounced for large arms than for the short ones.  相似文献

A cytogenetic study on eight species of the genus Prochilodus, family Prochilodontidae, from different hydrographic basins of Brazil is reported. All species had a diploid number of 2n=54 and NF=108. Supernumerary heterochromatic chromosomes of variable frequency were detected in Prochilodus scrofa and in P. cearensis. To determine the occurrence and frequency of the supernumerary chromosomes in P. scrofa, specimens from different localities belonging to the basin of the Paraná river were analysed. The high karyotypic similarity detected demonstrated that, at least in these eight species, evolution occurred without marked changes in chromosome macrostructure.  相似文献

Johnson, B. Lennart. (U. California, Los Angeles.) Natural hybrids between Oryzopsis and Stipa. III. Oryzopsis hymenoides × Stipa pinetorum. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(3): 228–234. Illus. 1963.—On the basis of morphological characters, the spontaneous hybrid Oryzopsis hymenoides × Stipa pinetorum is included in 0. bloomeri which consists of a number of sterile, natural hybrids between O. hymenoides (2n = 48) and various American species of Stipa (2n = 32-82). While intermediate between its parents in many attributes, the pinetorum hybrid is different from the other hybrids included in O. bloomeri with respect to lemma-hair length and other characters which are diagnostic for S. pinetorum (2n = 32). The hybrid has 2n = 40 chromosomes, but some plants of the hybrid and some of O. hymenoides had small supernumerary, somatic chromosomes. The parents formed only bivalents at meiosis. The hybrid showed some affinity among 14 chromosomes per sporocyte. This affinity is nearly as great as that shown by other Stiporyzopsis hybrids with 56 or 58 chromosomes, and is consistent with the earlier suggestion that bivalent formation in polyploid species of Stipa may be gene-controlled.  相似文献

The dioecious plant Rumex acetosa shows intraspecific karyotype variation, caused by supernumerary heterochromatic segments or DAPI (4',6-diamidino-2 phenylindole)-bands at the ends of the short arms of three pairs of autosomes. A DNA sequence (RAE730) specific to the supernumerary heterochromatic segments was cloned and sequenced. RAE730 was about 730 bp and AT-rich (71% AT-content). Using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), RAE730 was localized in the supernumerary DAPI-positive heterochromatic segments on several mitotic chromosomes and chromocenters in interphase nuclei, but not in the DAPI-bands of Y or B chromosomes. RAE730 was tandemly arranged in the genome, and the copy number varied between plants from 40000 to 304000 copies per 2C, corresponding to the relative amount of supernumerary heterochromatic segments per genome. These results indicate that the karyotype variation caused by the supernumerary heterochromatic segment was generated by amplification or reduction of the tandem repeats of RAE730.  相似文献
