In Mutisieae species, the style branches are described as short and the stigmatic areas cover the inside of the style branches. As shown in preliminary observations, the Mutisia speciosa florets had long style branches (7 mm), bifurcate only at the apex (about 1.5 mm) and juxtaposed along the remaining length. The objective was to locate the stigmatic areas in M. speciosa. For this purpose, neutral red, 3% hydrogen peroxide and hand pollinations were used. For the pollinations, florets with cut apical portion of the branches (about 2 mm) and florets with intact branches were used. In the first group of florets, the pollen was deposited along the margins of the juxtaposed branches (about 5 mm), and in the second, the pollen was ventrally deposited on the bifurcated apical portion. Some of these florets were left on the plant until fruiting and others were analyzed under a fluorescence microscope to check pollen tube growth. The neutral red test defined two ventro-marginal bands fused at the apex of each style branch, consisting of papillose cells. Intense bubbling in the hydrogen peroxide test showed that only the bands are receptive. The pollinations resulted in fruit sets and growth of pollen tubes, confirming that the bands are receptive along their entire length. This result is new and indicates the need for further studies on the floral biology of tropical Asteraceae species to improve the understanding of their reproductive attributes.  相似文献

Othonna cerarioides Magoswana and J.C. Manning is described as a new species from Namaqualand, Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It is an erect shrub with rod-like stems and branches, bearing numerous spur-shoots with obovate-oblanceolate leaves clustered at the tips, and up to nine disciform capitula per spur-shoot. Othonna cerarioides is anomalous in the genus in that the style of some of the disc florets is bifid. Othonna is diagnosed within subtribe Othonnineae by female-sterile disc florets with simple (or very rarely minutely bifid) styles. The disc florets in the closely related genus Hertia are bisexual with well branched styles.  相似文献

Lepidaploa belongs to tribe Vernonieae, one of the most complex tribes of Asteraceae, and the relationships within Lepidaploa and among related genera are poorly understood. Microcharacters may be of taxonomic value and may be used in the identification of taxa at different ranks. To evaluate the reliability of microcharacters as taxonomic markers in this group, we analysed the micromorphology of phyllaries, florets and cypselae in detail in 23 species of Lepidaploa .The species were studied using stereo, light, and scanning electron microscopy. Eight trichome types (eglandular and glandular) were observed on phyllaries, florets and cypselae, in addition to crystals, idioblasts and other microstructures. The results demonstrates that the ocurrence of different combinations of trichome types and crystals, presence of a stylar basal node, idioblasts and glandular apical anther appendages are highly useful to differentiate between related species of Lepidaploa and a diagnostic key using these characters is presented. However, these characters are not of much use to distinguish between closely related genera of Vernonieae since most characters appear homeoplasic and are found in representatives of different genera.  相似文献

Continuing our study about Echinops (Kruse & Meusel 1969) several species of the genera Acantholepis, Xeranthemum, Chardinia, Siebera, Amphoricarpus are analysed as to their leaf sequence. Acantholepis is very similar to Echinops. The single florets of the head are surrounded by bractlets. The teethes of the upper foliage leaves and of the outer involucral bracts are corresponding to segments of a pinnatifid leaf of Echinops. The other genera have foliage leaves with entire margins. The distal parts of the inner involucral bracts are homologous to the lamina of the leaves, and the receptacular scales are divided in small segments. The relations between the different leaf forms are studied from the view points of comparativ morphology and organogenesis.  相似文献

Galatella anatolica Hamzao?lu & Budak sp. nov. (Asteraceae), collected from Osmaniye (Turkey) is here described as a new species. It is similar to G. angustissima (Tausch) Novopokr. in general habit. Both have stems with few branches and 1‐veined middle leaves, but are distinguished by involucral features, series of phyllaries, and lengths of disc florets, achenes and pappus.  相似文献

Examination of genera of the Pseudoascoboleae (Ascomycetes, Discomycetes, Ascobolaceae) revealed that many were polytypic. Characters presently used to distinguish these genera are considered to be artificial and true relationships cut across accepted generic lines. Of the genera treated, Thecotheus and parts of Ascophanus, since their asci blue in iodine and their spores bear callose-pectic markings, are considered more closely related to the Pezizeae. Other genera are excluded from the Pseudoascoboleae because of other striking characters. Since the Pseudoascoboleae is shown to be an artificial grouping, it is proposed to abandon the name, using instead the tribe name Theleboleae, placed in the Pezizaceae rather than the Ascobolaceae, for all of those genera with asci that do not blue in iodine, with smooth, elliptical spores without oil guttules, and with eight-spored and multispored species. Four new genera are described: Iodophanus, for species of Ascophanus with iodine-positive asci; Coprotus, for segments of Ascophanus and Ryparobius; Caccobius, for species intermediate to Ascozonus and Thelebolus; and Trichobolus, for the setose members of Thelebolus. The species of Ryparobius not belonging to Coprotus are transferred to Thelebolus.  相似文献

Eucharis, Caliphruria, and Urceolina form a monophyletic group of petiolate-leaved, Neotropical Amaryllidaceae ecologically specialized to the understory of primary tropical rain forest below 2,000 m elevation. Pollen morphology of the three genera is surveyed. Pollen grains of all species of Eucharis, Caliphruria, and Urceolina are boat-shaped elliptic, monosulcate, heteropolar, and bilateral in symmetry. Exine sculpturing is semitectate-columellate and reticulate in all species examined. A transformation series in reticulum coarseness and pollen grain size is described. The large pollen grain with coarse reticulum of most Eucharis species is considered ancestral. The fine reticulation of Caliphruria is considered derived and the exine morphology of Urceolina is intermediate. Both of these genera have medium-sized pollen grains. Exine dimorphism common to all Urceolina, but rare in Eucharis and Caliphruria, may be symplesiomorphous among those taxa exhibiting this morphology. The three genera are largely uniform in pollen grain ultrastructure, with completely ektexinous exines. Pollen grain size in Eucharis is not closely correlated with style length. Several wide-ranging species show considerable intraspecific variation in pollen size. Parallelisms in pollen grain evolution among related tribes of Neotropical Amaryllidaceae are discussed.  相似文献

Background: It has been reported that some plants of the self-compatible species Senecio vulgaris produce capitula containing long-styled florets which fail to set seed when left to self-pollinate, although readily set seed when self-pollinated by hand.

Aims: To determine if production of long-styled florets is associated with higher outcrossing rate in S. vulgaris, and whether long-styles occur in non-pollinated florets, whereas short-styles are present in self-pollinated florets.

Methods: The frequency of long-styled florets was compared in the radiate and non-radiate variants of S. vulgaris, known to exhibit higher and lower outcrossing rates, respectively. In addition, style length was compared in emasculated florets that were either self-pollinated or left non-pollinated.

Results: Long-styled florets were more frequent in the higher outcrossing radiate variant. Following emasculation, long styles occurred in non-pollinated florets, while short styles were present in self-pollinated florets. The two variants did not differ in style length within the non-pollinated or within the self-pollinated floret categories.

Conclusions: A high frequency of long-styled florets is associated with higher outcrossing rate in S. vulgaris and results from delayed self-pollination and pollen germination on stigmas.  相似文献

The 22 species ofBlumea occurring in India have been investigated for structural variations of style and the pollen presentation mechanisms. The typically gynomonecious capitulum, with several series of female florets on the periphery and fewer bisexual florets in the centre, presents diverse patterns in the structure and behaviour of anthers, styles and stigmas. Thus, the different pollen presentation mechanisms show that inbreeding, outbreeding, or both mechanisms may be operating within a single capitulum. Based on the total number of florets in a capitulum, the species have been grouped into 4 categories.  相似文献

Assessing the relative contributions to seed set for each of a plant species’ floral visitors provides an indication of the relative influence of these visitors on the plant’s reproductive success. This study examined pollinator activity and seed set in a population of Heterotheca subaxillaris, a species that exhibits a floret dimorphism (heads bearing disk and ray florets), and that is visited by both generalist foragers and specialist bees. Visits by nine bee genera and one genus of skipper were recorded in the study population. During the period of study, these insects varied in their relative abundance, in their foraging activity on a head, and in their pollination effectiveness. The pattern of pollination effectiveness shown by the different pollinators was similar for both floret types, although seed set was higher overall for ray florets. Pollinator importance, calculated as the product of pollination effectiveness and relative abundance, was dictated by a pollinator’s relative abundance. The single specialist bee species observed in the study population proved to have neither higher pollination effectiveness nor higher pollinator abundance than other pollinators. This would suggest that H. subaxillaris is not under strong selective pressure to co-specialize with its specialist visitor. Received: 21 December 1995 / Accepted: 20 June 1996  相似文献

Synchysidendron, gen. nov., is segregated from Diaphorodendron DiMichele emend. Both genera are determinate, rhizomorphic, arborescent lycopsids that share identical reproductive organs but differ radically in growth architecture and consequently in the timing of reproduction. Cones in Synchysidendron (two species) are borne on late-formed crown branches; in Diaphorodendron (three species) cones are borne on deciduous lateral branches, produced over much of the life of the tree. The two genera also differ in several characteristics of the stele and periderm. We hypothesize that Diaphorodendron gave rise to Synchysidendron within their shared Late Carboniferous coal-swamp habitat, by heterochronic suppression of lateral branching during ontogeny. Together, these genera form a highly apomorphic clade, here recognized as the new family Diaphorodendraceae, that is distinguished primarily by siphonostelic axes, a bifacial periderm, distinctive megasporangia, and gulate megaspores.  相似文献

The presence of neuter ray florets in species within Asteraceae is generally believed to increase pollinator attraction. In the endemic Galápagos genus Scalesia (Asteraceae) a natural variation in the presence/absence of neuter ray florets is found. To evaluate whether the presence of ray florets plays a selective role on female reproductive success we chose two species of Scalesia, Scalesia affinis that carries ray florets and S. pedunculata that is rayless. On Santa Cruz Island capitula of S. pedunculata were equipped with fake ray florets while others were untouched. On Isabela Island ray florets were removed on half of the capitula of S. affinis. In S. affinis rayed capitula received more pollinators and more pollen, which resulted in a significantly higher embryo production. In S. pedunculata no effect on embryo production was found. The disagreement between the two species may correspond to a difference in visitation frequency, S. pedunculata receiving many more visit than S. affinis. Thus, ray floret development proved beneficial in pollinator-restricted localities.  相似文献

Lipophilic and vacuolar flavonoids were separately identified in representative temperate species of the genera Anthemis, Chrysanthemum, Cotula, Ismelia, Leucanthemum and Tripleurospermum. The four Anthemis species investigated variously produced four main surface constituents, in leaf and flower: santin, quercetagetin 3,6,3′-trimethyl ether, scutellarein 6,4′-dimethyl ether and 6-hydroxyluteolin 6,3′-dimethyl ether. By contrast, surface extracts of disc and ray florets of the species of Chrysanthemum, Cotula, Ismelia, Leucanthemum and Tripleurospermum surveyed yielded five common flavones in the free state: apigenin, luteolin, acacetin, apigenin 7-methyl ether and chrysoeriol. Polar flavonoids were isolated and identified in leaf, ray floret and disc floret of all the above plants. Anthemis species were distinctive in having flavonol glycosides in the leaves, whereas the leaf flavonoids of the other taxa were generally flavone O-glycosides. The 3-glucoside and 3-rutinoside of patuletin were characterised for the first time from Anthemis tinctoria ssp. subtinctoria. Two new flavonol glycosides, the 5-glucuronides of quercetin and kaempferol, were obtained from the leaf of Leucanthemum vulgare, where they co-occur with the related 5-glucosides and with several flavone glycosides. The ray florets of these Anthemideae generally contain apigenin and/or luteolin 7-glucoside and 7-glucuronide, whereas disc florets have additional flavonol glycosides, notably the 7-glucosides of quercetin and patuletin and the 7-glucuronide of quercetin. A comparison of the flavonoid pattern encountered here with those previously recorded for Tanacetum indicate some chemical affinity between Anthemis and Tanacetum. Flavonoid patterns of the other five genera are more distinct from those of Tanacetum and suggest that those genera form a related group. All 14 species surveyed for their flavonoid profiles have distinctive constituents and the chemical data are in harmony with modern taxonomic treatments of the “Chrysanthemum complex” as a series of separate genera.  相似文献

Roots, leaves, and flowers of 80 species of Compositae were tested for phototoxic activity against Candida albicans. Many genera showed activity, especially in the roots. No active genera were found in the tribe Cichorieae. Phototoxic compounds were isolated from Chrysanthemum leucanthemum florets and Cirsium arvense roots. Chemotaxonomic evidence plus preliminary chemical data suggests that the compounds are polyacetylenic in nature. Unlike other phototoxic compounds, these are inactive against human skin.  相似文献

Floral microcharacters of the genus Chrysolaena H. Rob. (Vernonieae, Asteraceae) were analysed in detail for the first time in order to evaluate the taxonomic position of conflictive species in the group. The results were also compared with studies carried out in species of related genera. In addition to distinctive microcharacters previously studied in some species of the genus, other characters such as trichome types of the corolla, style, anthers and cypselae have been analysed for the first time. The presence of glandular apical appendage and cypselae are common characteristics among species Chrysolaena. In addition to these, this study shows that presence of glands on the style and corollas is another consistent characteristic in the genus. However, the absence of basal stylar node would not be a diagnostic character since this varies widely among species. The results indicate that most of the microcharacters of Chrysolaena analysed are quite consistent in the genus, but they are no more consistent than the pollen morphology (type 'C') and chromosome base number (x = 10). Until now, these last two features would be most useful for separating Chrysolaena from the related genera Lessingianthus and Lepidaploa. At species level, the results show that related species can be distinguished by the different combinations of floral microcharacters. The value of microcharacters could be increased if they are combined with other morphological, cytological, and palynological data.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy and transmitted light microscopy are used in a palynological study of Lophosoria, Metaxya, Sphaeropteris, Alsophila, and Nephelea of the tree fern family Cyatheaceae. The monotypic American genera Lophosoria and Metaxya each have a unique spore morphology which reinforces the taxonomic distinctness of these genera as indicated by their other characters. All investigated paleotropical species of Sphaeropteris develop a single type of perine characterized by coarse, pointed projections. In the neotropics, the Sphaeropteris horrida group shares this perine type, whereas all other neotropical Sphaeropteris species appear to have a different kind of perine with fine hair-like processes. The exine in paleotropical Sphaeropteris appears uniformly unsculptured, whereas in the neotropics several exine morphologies are found. In Alsophila all investigated neotropical species and the vast majority of the paleotropical species are characterized by a basically ridged perine morphology and an unsculptured exine. In several paleotropical Alsophila species, however, a perine with hair-like processes similar to those in neotropical Sphaeropteris is found, and the exine in several species is variously pitted. In at least one paleotropical Alsophila species, the porate exine morphology is indistinguishable from that in the neotropical genus Cnemidaria. The spores of the American genus Nephelea are similar to those of the majority of Alsophila species in ridged perine morphology and unsculptured exine. Several new instances of atypical spore numbers per sporangium are reported in Sphaeropteris and Alsophila. These and the palynological data are discussed in a taxonomic framework. The spore morphology in these genera is consistent with Tryon's recent generic revision of the family.  相似文献

The Juglandaceae (walnut family) has an excellent fossil record of various organs extending back to the earliest Tertiary. Several genera which today are restricted to isolated geographic regions were widespread in the Northern Hemisphere during the Tertiary. This paper focuses upon the fossil record of the Pterocarya alliance of the subfamily Juglandoideae, tribe Juglandeae. The Pterocarya alliance includes only two modern genera, Pterocarya (five species) and Cyclocarya (one species), both restricted to Eurasia. Paleogene sediments of the Rocky Mountain Region have yielded three genera and four species referable to the Pterocarya alliance: Cyclocarya (two species), Pterocarya, and a new genus, Polyptera. Although three of the four Paleogene species described here are attributed to present day genera, each represents an extinct form, which cannot be accommodated by any single living species. These fossils, reviewed with other published reports, indicate that the Pterocarya alliance, like the Engelhardia alliance of the same family, was more diverse and much more widespread geographically in the Tertiary than it is today.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships in the Sargassaceae were explored using three DNA markers, and the monophyly of its genera was challenged. Nineteen out of 24 currently recognized genera were sampled, representing 63 species. The variable mt23S‐tRNA Val intergenic spacer could only be aligned within genera and could not be used to infer intergeneric relationships. The partial mt23S was also useful to delineate genera and was alignable at the family level but provided few informative characters. Analysis of mt23S DNA sequences together with chloroplast‐encoded psbA sequences resulted in a better resolved phylogeny. Hormophysa was the first genus to branch off within the Sargassaceae, followed by Myriodesma; then the three genera Caulocystis, Carpoglossum, and Scaberia in unresolved order; and then Acrocarpia. The other taxa studied here were divided over three major clades, but there was no branch support for the monophyly of two of these. The genera Bifurcaria, Cystoseira, Halidrys, and Sargassum appeared polyphyletic. The following taxonomic changes are proposed: a new genus Brassicophycus for Bifurcaria brassicaeformis (Kützing) E. S. Barton; reinstatement of the genus Sargassopsis for Sargassum decurrens (R. Brown ex Turner) C. Agardh; reinstatement of the genus Sirophysalis for Indo‐Pacific Cystoseira trinodis (Forsskål) C. Agardh; reinstatement of the genus Polycladia for the western Indian Ocean species Cystoseira indica (Thivy et Doshi) Mairh, Cystoseira myrica (S. G. Gmelin) C. Agardh, and Acystis heinii Schiffner; and reinstatement of the genus Stephanocystis for the North Pacific Cystoseira species and Halidrys dioica N. L. Gardner. The European Cystoseira species should be split into three genera, but no name changes are proposed yet, because diagnostic characters were found only for the clade including the type species. Some evolutionary trends could be discerned from the mt23S + psbA phylogeny.  相似文献
