Chloroplast sequences spanning rps7 to 23S rDNA in Arceuthobium campylopodum and A. pendens were generated and compared to Arabidopsis and seven other parasitic plants. Pseudogenes for trnV, trnI (GAU), and trnA (UGC) were seen in both Arceuthobium species, paralleling the situation in the holoparasite Epifagus (Orobanchaceae). These tRNA genes were intact, however, in two other members of Santalales (Ximenia and Phoradendron). The 16S–23S rDNA intergenic spacer was sequenced for 13 additional species of Arceuthobium representing both Old and New World taxa. All species examined had pseudogenes for trnI and trnA, however, deletions in these tRNAs have occurred in different regions among various lineages of the genus. The aligned 16S–23S rDNA intergenic spacer was analyzed using maximum parsimony and compared with nuclear ITS rDNA using a similar suite of species. Overall species relationships were generally congruent, although two cases of potential lineage sorting or chloroplast capture were detected. Arceuthobium is a valuable genetic model to constrast with holoparasites because, despite significant alteration and truncation of its plastome, it still maintains photosynthetic function. The phenology and morphology of Mediterranean plants are constrained by drought in summer and cold temperatures in winter. In this study we examine how climatic factors and phylogenetic constraints have shaped variation in the phenology and morphology of 17 species of the genus Cyclamen cultivated in uniform garden conditions. We quantify the extent to which traits differ among subgenera and thus represent conserved traits within evolutionary lineages. We also explore whether leaf, flowering and seed-release phenology are correlated among species, and thus whether variation in flowering phenology results from selection on dispersal phenology. Our results show a significant influence of subgenus membership on leaf and flowering phenology but not on morphological traits or the timing of seed release. Among-species variation in foliage height, leaf size and seed mass (but not in floral traits) is correlated with chromosome number. Leaf traits show that species with a shorter vegetative period have a higher capacity for resource acquisition. Major phenological shifts, i.e. spring vs. autumn flowering and a decoupling of leaf and flower phenology in autumnal flowering species, thus occurred prior to the diversification of species in each subgenus and not as a response to selection on dispersal timing. Leaf and flowering phenology illustrate a gradient of strategies from autumn flowering in the absence of leaves (hysteranthous species) to spring flowering with fully developed foliage (synanthous species). In the former, flowering is uncoupled from resource acquisition by simultaneous photosynthesis, indicative that hysteranthy is a response to temporal unpredictability in the onset of rain after the summer drought. Our results support the idea that whereas leaf development is controlled primarily by moisture availability and secondarily by temperature, flowering is temperature dependent, above a minimum moisture threshold. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2004, 145 , 469–484.  相似文献

A study of the flowering and fruiting phenology was undertaken for twenty species of the xerochamaephytic communities that characterize the mountain-crest areas of the island of Majorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). The flowering period of the species considered extends from March to November, with the majority flowering during the spring and early summer, and a peak in June. The flowering duration at the species level is longest for Rosmarinus officinalis var. palaui (which flowered in spring and autumn) and was shortest for Genista majorica and Rubia balearica. In this community, three strategies were observed that may serve to reduce interspecific competition between pollinators: 1) pollination specialization of white-pink flowers; 2) high diversification of yellow flower pollinators; and 3) the divergence in flowering time of less common flower colours. The flowering duration of individual plants and whole populations are positively correlated, which may indicate that individuals of each population optimize the time which is phenologically useful. The flowering of the spiny cushion species of the community is characterized by a smaller intraspecific overlap in comparison to the other species examined. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Climate scenarios for high‐latitude areas predict not only increased summer temperatures, but also larger variation in snowfall and winter temperatures. By using open‐top chambers, we experimentally manipulated both summer temperatures and winter and spring snow accumulations and temperatures independently in a blanket bog in subarctic Sweden, yielding six climate scenarios. We studied the effects of these scenarios on flowering phenology and flower production of Andromeda polifolia (woody evergreen) and Rubus chamaemorus (perennial herb) during 2 years. The second year of our study (2002) was characterized by unusually high spring and early summer temperatures. Our winter manipulations led to consistent increases in winter snow cover. As a result, average and minimum air and soil temperatures in the high snow cover treatments were higher than in the winter ambient treatments, whereas temperature fluctuations were smaller. Spring warming resulted in higher average, minimum, and maximum soil temperatures. Summer warming led to higher air and soil temperatures in mid‐summer (June–July), but not in late summer (August–September). The unusually high temperatures in 2002 advanced the median flowering date by 2 weeks for both species in all treatments. Superimposed on this effect, we found that for both Andromeda and Rubus, all our climate treatments (except summer warming for Rubus) advanced flowering by 1–4 days. The total flower production of both species showed a more or less similar response: flower production in the warm year 2002 exceeded that in 2001 by far. However, in both species flower production was only stimulated by the spring‐warming treatments. Our results show that the reproductive ecology of both species is very responsive to climate change but this response is very dependent on specific climate events, especially those that occur in winter and spring. This suggests that high‐latitude climate change experiments should focus more on winter and spring events than has been the case so far.  相似文献

Ribosomal DNA (rDNA) internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 5.8S rDNA sequences were obtained from 22 species of dwarf mistletoes (Arceuthobium — Viscaceae) to test phylogenetic relationships. Interspecific distances ranged from 0 to 21.4% between New World species, values two to five times higher than those measures for the ITS region in other plants. One Old World species (A. oxycedri) and one New World species (A. abietis-religiosae) were remarkably similar to each other but exhibited up to 41% sequence divergence from the remaining species. Minimum length trees support the concept of a verticillately branched subgenus Arceuthobium; however, interspecific distances indicate this group is extremely heterogeneous. Subgenus Vaginata, Section Vaginata, is centered in Mexico and encompasses all the taxa previously placed in this group but is expanded to include several species previously classified in Section Campylopoda (e.g., A. divaricatum, A. rubrum, and A. strictum). The sister group relationship between A. divaricatum and A. douglasii, first seen following isozyme analysis, is supported by ITS sequence data. Section Campylopoda s. s. is now composed of 13 mainly U.S. species that show a high degree of morphological and genetic similarity. The eastern dwarf mistletoe, A. pusillum, is not closely related to A. douglasii but rather with A. bicarinatum from Hispaniola, which suggests that these taxa represent highly modified relicts that shared an ancestor in the early Tertiary. Two endemic species from Mexico and Central America (A. guatemalense and A. pendens) formed a sister group and have been placed in a new Section (Penda). Rapid molecular evolution in Arceuthobium may be associated with the adaptive radiation of this genus on numerous conifer hosts.  相似文献

The role of mosquitoes and moths as pollinators of Habenaria obtusata was studied in northern Wisconsin during the summer of 1969. In each population studied, meter-square quadrants were marked and the number of plants, flowers per inflorescence, rate and time of pollinia removed, and capsule set recorded. Carbon dioxide and modified New Jersey Light Traps were set during the flowering period to capture pollinia-bearing insects. The study showed that female mosquitoes of the genus Aedes (particularly A. communis) and two species of Geometrid moths of the genus Xanthorhoe are important pollinators of H. obtusata. Pollination occurred during the last few days of flowering with an average of 18.0% of the pollinia removed and with 14.2% capsule set.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers are reported from 67 populations of 36 taxa, mostly in Phoradendron. The basic number is 14 in Phoradendron and probably also in Arceuthobium. The 4 species of Struthanthus for which chromosome numbers are recorded suggest that the basic number is 8. Numbers of n = 8 and n = 10 have been reported for Psittacanthus. In Phoradendron the 22 taxa examined are all diploid, although 1 instance of polyploidy was discovered. Objects interpreted as supernumerary chromosomes were discovered in a number of species of Phoradendron; no evidence of sex chromosomes previously reported in Phoradendron was observed. The Loranthaceae have chromosomes comparable in size to the largest in the plant kingdom.  相似文献

Apis cerana japonica Radoszkowski, endemic to Japan, is known to be one of the most important pollinators for wild plants and crops, such as buckwheat, in cool to warm temperate Japan. To determine the degree of dependence of A. cerana japonica on forest resources, we analyzed pollen brought back to nests in a typical “Satoyama” landscape with relatively high deciduous forest coverage in northern Japan. We divided the landscape elements of the study area into three types: deciduous forest, conifer plantation and open land according to landcover digital data, and each pollen taxon was assigned to one of these three types of landscape elements. We collected total pollen loads of 15.75 g (total of colonies A and B) in May (spring), 1.57 g (total of colonies A and C) in June (early summer), 19.03 g (total of colonies A, B and C) in July (mid‐summer) and 45.61 g (total of colonies A, B and D) in September (autumn). Deciduous forests are the most important foraging habitats for A. cerana japonica in the “Satoyama” landscape especially from spring to mid‐summer when mass flowering of tall trees and shrubs species provides rich floral resources for developing bee colonies. On the other hand, the bees frequently foraged from herbaceous plant species in autumn when flowering of tree species reduces and herbaceous plant species have flowering peaks. In turn, the bees provide pollination services to a number of wild flowers blooming in various forest layers ranging from the canopy to the understory layer.  相似文献

Three major herbaceous groups, the Asteraceae, Amaranthaceael Chenopodiaceae, and Poaceae, shed abundant pollen in coastal southern Texas during late summer to fall. The grasses, and to a lesser extentParthenium (Asteraceae), also release pollen in the spring, giving marked bimodal distributions. These aeropollen patterns were consistent between 1987 and 1989. Although environmental conditions and palynological features are important in understanding aeropollen variabilities, differing inherent photoperiodic response of wind pollinated taxa in the spring and fall, and to a more limited extent during summer and winter, are of primary relevance at Corpus Christi, and indeed elsewhere, in the initiation and cessation of flowering, and thus of the release of ambient pollen. To comprehend photoperiodicity is to understand the fundamental patterns of aeropollen occurrences year after year.  相似文献

The life cycle and autoecology of three Mediterranean thorny species,Onopordum nervosum (Iberian endemic),Cirsium scabrum (Western Mediterranean) andCarthamus arborescens (Iberian-North African), of potential use in agriculture as bioenergetic, forage or oil producing plants were studied. These threeCardueae spp. are good examples of ways in which Mediterranean plants adapt their typical annual cycle to avoid summer droughts.O. nervosum is a perennial, monocarpic, heliophilous species which flowers in early summer and grows even under the extreme xeric conditions of the Mediterranean summers. It is a basiphilous plant usually found in sandy-loamy and sandy-clayey-loamy soils with a marked geographical variability in its seed germination.C. scabrum is a perennial, monocarpic species which has a long life cycle, flowering in summer and growing only during the wet months. It is not well-adapted to droughts and is usually restricted to acid soils.C. arborescens is a perennial, polycarpic species which flowers in spring and dries up in summer. It is usually found in basic loamy-sandy or sandy-loamy soils poor in organic matter.  相似文献

This paper examines the mean flowering times of 11 plant species in the British Isles over a 58-year period, and the flowering times of a further 13 (and leafing time of an additional 1) for a reduced period of 20 years. Timings were compared to Central England temperatures and all 25 phenological events were significantly related (P<0.001 in all but 1 case) to temperature. These findings are discussed in relation to other published work. The conclusions drawn from this work are that timings of spring and summer species will get progressively earlier as the climate warms, but that the lower limit for a flowering date is probably best determined by examining species phenology at the southern limit of their distribution. Mangroves in the subtropical area of Japan are growing to their northern limits, yet little is known of their phenology. The aim of the present study was to understand both vegetative and reproductive phenology patterns, such as leaf emergence, leaf fall, bud setting, flowering, fruiting and propagule setting, in the mangrove Kandelia obovata. The phenology of this species was assessed using litter‐fall data for 5 years. Leaf and stipule litter‐falls continued with a clear monthly pattern throughout the years. New leaf production and leaf fall peaked in summer, immediately after the propagules fell. Leaf and stipule litter‐falls were linked to monthly sunshine hour, and monthly mean air temperature and monthly mean air relative humidity, respectively. Kandelia obovata had a distinct flowering period, with the flowering phenophase starting in spring and continuing into summer. Fruit initiation started at the end of summer and continued into autumn, whereas propagule production occurred during winter and spring. Flowering of K. obovata was influenced by monthly sunshine hour and monthly mean air temperature, whereas fruit and propagule litter‐falls were not linked to any climatic factors. The present results showed that a small portion (4.4%) of flowers developed into propagules. The average development period from flower buds to mature propagules was approximately 11 months. Kendall's consistency coefficient suggested that the monthly trends in vegetative and reproductive litter‐fall components, except for branches, did not change significantly among years.  相似文献

Materials are presented to the effect thatPhoradendron californicum Nutt., the nomenclatural type of the genusPhoradendron (Viscaceae), is related to southern, cataphyllous species, not to northern, acataphyllous ones. The evidence consists of the frequent occurrence of basal cataphylls in the species, variation in basal phyllotaxy, and a basically biseriate arrangement of flowers on fertile internodes. The suggestion of this southern, cataphyllous affinity is supported by the recent discovery of a strictly cataphyllous Mexican species,P. olae Kuijt, which shows median basal phyllotaxy and is in many features extremely similar toP. californicum. The nomenclatural consequences of this discovery would lead to subgen.Boreales (Trel.) Engler (and probably subgen.Aequatoriales (Trel.) Engler) being synonymized under subgen.Phoradendron, characterized by basal cataphylls (though not in all species). However, no generic subdivision of any sort is supported at this time.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the climatic influences on floral development for five members of the Australian native plant genus Acrotriche R. Br (Ericaceae). An observed period of summer floral dormancy suggests temperature is involved in flowering regulation in these species. Models were developed to determine temperature requirements associated with the likelihood of flowering occurring on any one day. To this end, the timing of flowering and meteorological data were collated for several sites, and multivariate logistic regressions performed to identify variables with a significant influence on flowering timing. The resultant models described a large amount of variation in flowering presence/absence, with r 2 values ranging from 0.72 to 0.79. Temperature was identified as influential on both floral development and flowering timing in each of the study species. The positive influence of short photoperiods on flowering in three of the winter flowering species was not surprising. However, the reporting here of a significant association between interdiurnal temperature and flowering in one species is novel. The predictive power of the models was validated through a jackknife sequential recalculation approach, revealing strong positive and negative predictive ability for flowering for four of the five species. Applications of the models include assisting in determination of the suitability of areas for vegetation restoration and identifying the possible effects of climate change on flowering in the study species.  相似文献

Hoverflies are good indicators of ecosystem integrity, especially in drylands. However, the key factors explaining hoverfly diversity in North African forest ecosystems are still not addressed. The current study provides data on the diversity, structure and functional trophic groups (FTG) of the hoverfly community in Aleppo pine forests under a semi-arid climate in northeastern Algeria. Using an entomological net, hoverflies were sampled weekly during 2008–2009. Alpha and beta-diversity of hoverflies and functional trophic group (FTG) were analyzed using several parameters and indices (e.g. species composition, richness, occurrence, diversity, estimations, similarity, etc.). In total, 602 individuals of 21 species were collected with a constant species (Eupeodes corollae) and four common species (Episyrphus balteatus, Chrysotoxum intermedium, Eristalis arbustorum and Eristalis tenax). Most species (17) occurred accidentally or very accidentally in samples. The highest diversity was recorded during spring, corresponding to the flowering season of most understory plant species. Seasonal rarefaction and extrapolation curves indicated that the expected species richness would be higher in autumn and spring compared to summer and winter. The spectrum of FTG ranked predators first with 52.4% of species, followed by saprophagous (42.8%) and then phytophagous (4.8%) species. Hoverfly communities showed high taxonomic richness and alpha-diversity all over the year, with peaks during spring that coincides with flowering period of most plant species of the forest understorey and favourable climatic conditions.  相似文献

Abstract Stirlingia latifolia R. Br. is a proteaceous undershrub that is widespread in open woodlands and heathlands of the south‐west botanical province of Western Australia where it is subject to frequent fires, both natural and the result of fuel‐reduction burns. Shoots are completely destroyed by fire but regenerate rapidly by resprouting numerous new shoots from the root crown. Flowering is strongly triggered by fire with only sparse flowering in fire‐free periods. A study was undertaken to compare regrowth and flowering in populations of S. latifolia burnt in summer or autumn with populations burnt in spring as well as in unburnt population. Post‐fire flowering was recorded in 92% of plants burnt in summer/autumn compared with 73% of plants burnt in spring and less than 3% in populations that had not been burnt for more than 2 years. Plants burnt in summer/autumn resprouted an average of 8.5 shoots from their root crown, of which 93% developed an inflorescence. In contrast, spring‐burnt plants averaged only 5.9 shoots per plant with only 64% of these bearing an inflorescence. Ability to produce flowers was found to be related to plant age, with young individuals producing fewer or no inflorescences following spring burns in comparison with the more prolific flowering of similarly aged individuals following summer/autumn burns. Summer/autumn‐burnt plants also produced significantly longer inflorescence‐bearing shoots bearing a greater numbers of flower heads than those burnt in spring. Possible explanations for these results are given in the present report.  相似文献

This study was conducted with a sample of 733 Cyprinus carpio collected between May 2013 and February 2016 from the ecosystem lake in the Ghrib dam which is eutrophic. Cyprinus carpio in this dam is characterized by a single fractional spawning that begins in the spring and ends in the late summer. The distributions of the viscerosomatic and gonadosomatic indices decrease between the spring and summer seasons. These periods correspond to the spawning period and the biological break of this species. They progressively increase between autumn and winter when the biological activity of the species returns. The hepatosomatic index progressively decreases between the spring and the summer when the hepatic reserves are used for reproduction. The repletion index shows that the trophic activity of C. carpio is intense in the spring. The condition factor varies between 1.1 and 1.35. The evolution of the biological indices of both sexes is well stressed in well‐defined periods according to the seasons. The values are weak for males and high for females. The redundancy analysis allows the characterization of the influence of the physico‐chemical parameters of the dam water, especially the role of the nutritious elements, in the biological seasonal cycle of C. carpio.  相似文献

Although it has been widely asserted that plants mate assortatively by flowering time, there is virtually no published information on the strength or causes of phenological assortment in natural populations. When strong, assortative mating can accelerate the evolution of plant reproductive phenology through its inflationary effect on genetic variance. We estimated potential assortative mating for flowering date in 31 old‐field species in Ontario, Canada. For each species, we constructed a matrix of pairwise mating probabilities from the individual flowering schedules, that is the number of flower deployed on successive dates. The matrix was used to estimate the phenotypic correlation between mates, ρ, for flowering date. We also developed a measure of flowering synchrony within species, S, based upon the eigenstructure of the mating matrix. The mean correlation between pollen recipients and potential donors for flowering date was  = 0.31 (range: 0.05–0.63). A strong potential for assortative mating was found among species with high variance in flowering date, flowering schedules of short duration and skew towards early flower deployment. Flowering synchrony, S, was negatively correlated with potential assortment (= ?0.49), but we go on to show that although low synchrony is a necessary condition for phenological assortative mating, it may not be sufficient to induce assortment for a given phenological trait. The potential correlation between mates showed no seasonal trend; thus, as climate change imposes selection on phenology through longer growing seasons, spring‐flowering species are no more likely to experience an accelerated evolutionary response than summer species.  相似文献

485 isolates were recorded from different localities between summer 1984 and spring 1985. These isolates comprise five different genera with eight different species of purple non-sulfur bacteria- Rhodopseudomonas was the most common genus at all sites and was represented by three species. R. acidophila, R. blastica, R. palustris. Rhodomicrobium was the second in frequency and was represented by R. vannielli only. This species was only recorded for khor sites. Rhodocyclus was represented by two species, R. gelatinosus and R. tenuis. Rhodobacter and Rhodospirillum were represented by one species each, Rhodobacter capsulatus and Rhodospirillum rubrum. Khor sites were richer in number of isolates and genera of purple non-sulphur bacteria than the main body of AHDL. Some species were more common in winter and spring while others predominate in summer and autumn.  相似文献
