Racial differences based on flowering response to several photoperiods were detectable in two widely separated populations of white snakeroot, Eupatorium rugosum Houtt. The most favorable photoperiod for advanced flowering in Georgia stocks was 12 hr, for those from North Dakota, 14 hr. The difference in latitude between these populations was approximately 12° and represents a mean difference of 75 days in the frost-free season. Under noninductive photoperiod a 1-hr interruption of white light in the middle of 15 hr of darkness stimulated floral initiation in North Dakota plants, whereas the same application at the beginning or at the end of the dark period failed to produce flower buds. The effect of red light (660 mμ) for 10 min given in the middle of the long night was similar to white light on the northern strain, and was negated by far-red (730 mμ). Georgia stocks initiated flowering under 15 hr of darkness but were retarded by white light applied in the middle of the period, thus differing in basic response from North Dakota plants. Red light, in contrast to effects observed in North Dakota plants, retarded initiation of flower buds. This effect was offset by far-red light. When compared with other studies on long-day and short-day species our results suggest that photoperiodic adaptations related to latitudinal distribution occur in white snakeroot. The North Dakota strain showed correspondence to long-day types while short-day tendencies were exhibited by Georgia plants.  相似文献

Carnations (Dianthus) cultivar White Sim, were grown under photoperiodiccycles comprising 8 h of natural daylight followed by 16-h ‘nights’during which different lighting treatments were given. Irradiationwith tungsten-filament lamps throughout the night was the mosteffective treatment for the promotion of flower initiation.Irrespective of the timing or duration of the lighting, tungstenfilamentlamps were more effective than ‘daylight’ fluorescentlamps. Promotion of flower initiation due to radiation from a far-redsource was greatest when irradiation followed immediately afterthe period of natural daylight and was least when it immediatelypreceded the period of daylight. Promotion of flowering dueto a red source was least when the effect of far-red was greatest.Red and far-red radiations were synergistic in their promotionof flower initiation when given simultaneously for a periodof 4 h in the middle of the night. It is suggested that in thepromotion of flower initiation in long-day plants, a requirementfor a relatively long duration of irradiation is related physiologicallyto a requirement for a relatively high proportion of far-redradiant energy.  相似文献

The ‘Lord Byron’ cultivar of Fuchsia hybrida is a long day plant for which GA acts as an inhibitor of flower initiation. At the dosages required to inhibit initiation (0.025 μg per plant) GA also promotes increased stem elongation but causes no other departures from normal development. Similar tests with auxins, antiauxins, kinins, and other substances showed no effect on flower initiation at dosages equivalent to that for GA. At 10- to 100-fold greater dosages, auxins, kinins, and anti-auxins inhibit not only flower initiation but also vegetative development. Thus the effect of GA on flower initiation appears to be unique, although other hormonal substances, such as abscisin, have not been tested. GA-induced inhibition is directly proportional to the dosage applied and inversely to the strength of long day induction (as measured by the number of long days). GA is most effective when applied to the terminal bud rather than to the mature leaves, suggesting that it is active at the site of flower initiation rather than in the leaves. If it is applied after translocation of the floral stimuli from the leaves, GA does not prevent flower initiation. Regardless of the dose applied, GA is less effective if applied later rather than earlier during LD induction. The inhibitory effect persists for several days. For example, an 0.85 μg dosage causes an 8–10-day delay in initiation; lower dosages have reduced effects. GA inhibits flower initiation but has no effect upon flower development. The rate of bud development is the same in GA-treated and control plants. Apparently no more than one to two axillary buds immediately below the apical meristem are receptive to long day-induced floral stimuli from the leaves. Regardless of the daylength conditions axillary buds more basal do not initiate flowers but develop into branch axes. The effect of a long day treatment persists for a very short time, perhaps no longer than the inhibition caused by minimal GA dosage. Thus flower initiation continues for a very short time following the end of long day induction. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the many reports of GA-induced inhibition as well as promotion of flower initiation. In particular, the discussion concerns the nation that flower initiation in fuchsia may be controlled by a gibberellin-like transmissible inhibitor.  相似文献

Flower bud initiation in seedlings and vegetatively propagated plants of Salix pentandra from different locations has been studied under controlled conditions. In mature plants flower bud formation was induced by 2-chloroethyltrimethylammoniumchloride (CCC) and by short day treatment. The effect of CCC was antagonized by GA3. The critical photoperiod for flower bud formation was about 18 h for a southern clone (from 49°48'N), but cuttings of a northern ecotype (from 69°39'N) formed flower buds even at 24 h photoperiod. Generally, flower bud formation occurred simultaneously with apical growth cessation. However, apical growth cessation was not a prerequisite for floral initiation and flower buds were also found in elongating plants. Seedlings up to 60 days old did not form flower buds in growth chamber studies. The length of the juvenile phase has not been studied in detail, but cuttings taken from seedlings approximately 20 cm high and 60 days old were able to develop flower buds when treated with CCC. A gradual transition from the juvenile to the mature phase was obtained by repeated pruning of seedlings grown at 18°C and 24 h photoperiod.  相似文献

Plants from three Lobelia cardinalis populations were grown under common garden conditions to assess intra- and interplant variation in seed and pollen production. Seed number per flower and mean seed weight varied systematically with floral position on the inflorescence (lowest values were from terminal flowers) but pollen grain number per flower did not vary systematically with floral position. Most of the remaining variance in seed and pollen grain number per flower and mean seed weight was distributed among plants; clones produced very similar amounts of pollen and seed. Seed yield was positively correlated with seed production per flower and with total flower production, but not with mean seed weight; pollen yield was also positively correlated with pollen grain production per flower and total flower production. Seed and pollen yield were simple linear functions of plant size but only pollen yield was a simple linear function of flower production; seed yield was a quadratic function in which the second order term was negative. This quadratic relationship resulted from a negative correlation between seed number per flower and total flower production. This correlation, in addition to the wide variation among plants in pollen number per flower, accounts for the weak correlation of seed and pollen yield. I conclude from these data that it is unlikely that plants in natural L. cardinalis populations transmit genes to the population's seed crop equally through pollen and ovules—emphasizing the importance of measuring both male and female components of reproductive success.  相似文献

Summary Floral initiation in strawberry cv. Cambridge Favourite, a facultative short-day plant, was inhibited by a daylength extension with red light (R) during the second half of a 16-hour night but not during the first half, and by far-red light (FR) in the first half but not during the second. Mixed R plus FR light was inhibitory to flowering at both times. This change in sensitivity to R and FR light in the evening and morning resembles the pattern for flower induction in long-day plants but differs from the pattern for flower inhibition in several other short-day plants, examples of which are given. These experiments afford further support for the hypothesis that the control of flower initiation in strawberry depends on the production of a flower inhibitor by leaves exposed to long photoperiods.Abbreviations R red - FR far-red - SD short day - LD long day - SDP short-day plant - LDP long-day plant  相似文献

Flowering response and plant form of photomorphogenic mutants (hy1, hy2, hy3, hy4 and hy5) of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.), a long-day plant, were examined in long and short days. There were only slight differences among genotypes including Landsberg wild type with respect to the flowering time under long days. The effect of 1 h light-(night)-breaks of far-red, red, blue and white light given in the middle of the dark period of plants grown under short days, was studied. Effects of far-red light applied at the end or the beginning of the main photoperiod on flowering and plant form were also examined. The light-breaks with all the above mentioned light qualities promoted floral initiation of all the genotypes including the wild type in terms of both the flowering time and the number of rosette leaves. In general, far-red light was most effective. It is possible to classify the hy-mutants into 3 groups by their responses to light-breaks under short day conditions: (a) Mutants hy2 and hy3, which have a reduced number of rosette leaves, and flower early. Red light is as effective as far-red light. The wavelength of light-breaks is relatively unimportant for flowering response. (b) Mutants hy4, hy5 and Landsberg wild type, which have a greater number of rosette leaves, and flower relatively late. The effectiveness of light-breaks is in the following order, far-red, blue, and red light, which is in reverse order to the transformation of phytochrome to the Pfr form. (c) Mutant hy1, which behaves anomalously with respect to relations between flowering time and number of rosette leaves; late flowering with reduced number of rosette leaves. Red, blue and far-red light are effective, but white light is ineffective for reducing the number of rosette leaves. When far-red light was given in the middle of the night or at the end of the main photoperiod, it markedly reduced the number of rosette leaves compared to those grown under short days for all the genotypes, while when applied at the beginning of the main photoperiod far-red light did not affect the number of rosette leaves. Different effects on the plant form dependent on the time of treatment with far-red light-breaks are also discussed.  相似文献

Nine-day-old Pinto bean seedlings, Phaseolus vulgaris L., were treated daily for 12 days with supplementary red or far-red radiation following daily exposure to 8 hr of daylight. Stem elongation was nearly exponential from the 4th to the 12th day of treatment and was about 2.9 times greater under far-red radiation. Cell division and cell elongation were promoted essentially equally by far-red radiation. There was virtually no difference in either the rate of leaf initiation or the duration of growth of internodes under the supplementary radiation.  相似文献

Piringer , A. A., R. J. Downs , and H. A. Borthwick . (U. S. Dept. of Agriculture, ARS, Belts ville, Md.) Photocontrol of growth and flowering of Caryopteris . Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(1): 86–90. Illus. 1963.—Flower buds were initiated on plants of Caryopteris × clandonensis A. Simmonds (C. incana [Houtt.] Miq. × C. mongholica Bunge) on all photopcriods but developed to anthesis only when daily dark periods exceeded 8 hr. Anthesis occurred in not less than 22 days after the beginning of 11 or more short photoperiods. Treatments with short days could be interrupted by as many as 30 non-inductive long days without significant increase in the minimum number of short days required for anthesis. Anthesis, like floral initiation of many plants, was reversibly controlled by red and far-red radiation acting through phytochrome. The inductive effectiveness of long dark periods was nullified by 1 min of red light or about 1 hr of far red. It was modified by night temperature in the range 45–70.F and filament lengths of stamens were shorter at night temperatures of 60 than at 70 F.  相似文献

A daylength extension with incandescent light is more effective in promoting flowering of long-day plants like Hyoscyamus niger than fluorescent light. A low phytochrome photoequilibrium (Pfr/Ptot), attained by a far-red irradiation at the close of long days under fluorescent light, also promotes flowering. Moreover, if flower initiation processes are initiated by several long days, a low phytochrome photoequilibrium at the end of short, postinduction photoperiods also enhances flowering. The initiation phase of flowering requires Pfr to be present whereas the development phase proceeds more rapidly in the absence of Pfr. Spectral dependence studies, therefore, could be misinterpreted if the initiation and development stages are combined into a single audit of flowering.  相似文献

The optimal conditions for the germination, growth, and flowering of an Indian strain of Arabidopsis thaliana were investigated in sterile culture. Seeds require a cold treatment to germinate, and the most effective temperature is 8?C for 48 hours. Germination after vernalization is promoted by red light and inhibited by far-red. Unvernalized seeds germinated after 31 days and flower buds appeared in 61 days. On verbalization and subsequent transfer to a temperature of 25?C and a light intensity of 4300 lux of fluorescent light, plants flowered in 25 days. Under 7000 lux of light rich in both blue and red region of the spectum, plants flowered in only 12 days. A minimum of five long-day photocyeles appeared to be necessary for flowering. Kinetin (10?7M) and gibberellic acid (10?7M, 10?6M) accelerated flower formation. Kinetin and 2,4-D also catised specific types of callussing from different regions of the plant.  相似文献

When plants of Silene coeli-rosa (L.) Godron were induced by seven long days, then exposed to darkness for 48 h before being returned to short days, they went on to initiate flowers with a delay of about 2 d. The synchronisation of cell division which normally occurs before flower initiation was suppressed, showing that it is not essential for flowering. Periods of darkness of up to 240 h inhibited apical growth and leaf initiation but did not prevent eventual flowering in short days. The commitment of the apex to flower was therefore maintained while apical growth was inhibited.Abbreviations SD short day(s) - LD long day(s)  相似文献

Reproductive physiology in Syringodium filiforme Kütz. is controlled primarily by temperature under day lengths ranging from 12 hr to continuous light. Texas plants can be induced to flower at temperatures ranging from 20 to 24 C, but southern Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean plants are most readily induced at 23–24 C. Texas plants proceed to anthesis at temperatures above 22 C, but St. Croix plants require higher temperatures, above 25 C, for emergence of flowers from the bracts. Flowers induced under continuous light proceed to anthesis under day lengths shortened to 11 hr, but further floral induction is inhibited even under inductive temperatures. In natural seagrass beds, flowering occurs primarily under lengthening day lengths and warming temperatures that follow winter minima, but inflorescences may occur at other times of the year if temperatures permit.  相似文献

Experiments using controlled environment facilities showed that flowering of Dichondra repens was promoted by chilling plants at 10 C or below. Optimum length of the chilling period was 5–6 weeks. Unchilled plants did not flower. The flowering stimulus resulting from chilling was destroyed by temperatures above 21 C. Rate of flowering was increased by short days during chilling, but short days could not substitute for the chilling requirement. Optimum daylength for flower initiation following chilling was approximately 14 hr and the optimum temperature was approximately 15 C. Flower buds developed in leaf axils of primary stems and laterals, but stem apices remained vegetative. When the chilling requirement was met flowering continued indefinitely as the plants grew.  相似文献

1. In insect‐pollinated plants, pollinator attraction is influenced by flowers (e.g. number, size) and their associated rewards (e.g. pollen, nectar). These traits can depend on plant interactions. Indeed, below‐ground competition between plants can lead to a decrease in flower or reward production in insect‐pollinated species. 2. Wind‐pollinated plants, in particular, which are almost never studied in plant–pollinator networks, can alter insect‐pollinated plants' attractiveness through competition for nutrients. The response of pollinators to such changes has never been investigated. 3. A pot experiment was carried out in which an insect‐pollinated species, Echium plantagineum, was grown in binary mixture with three wind‐pollinated species selected to exert a panel of competitive interactions. Below‐ground competition was controlled using dividers limiting interspecific root competition. Floral traits of E. plantagineum (i.e. flower production, floral display size, flower size and nectar production) were measured. For each species mixture, the visits (i.e. first visit, number of visits, 10‐min sequences) of Bombus terrestris individuals released in a flight cage containing two pots were followed, one with and one without below‐ground competition. 4. Below‐ground competition significantly affected nectar's sucrose concentration but did not influence flower and nectar production. Likewise, pollinator visits were not influenced by below‐ground competition. Competitor identity significantly influenced flower and reward production of E. plantagineum, with a decrease in the presence of the most competitive wind‐pollinated species. A tendency for faster flower visitation events was also detected in the presence of the least competitive competitor. This study raises new questions regarding the influence of wind‐pollinated plants on plant–pollinator interactions.  相似文献

Photoperiodic Responses of Brassica campestris cv. Ceres   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The photoperiodic responses of Brassica campestris L. cv. Ceres were investigated to determine the suitability of this plant for further studies on the spectral require ments for floral initiation. This is a long-day plant, sensitive to one inductive photocycle on the fourth day from germination. The flowering response increased with the length and intensity of a single period of supplementary light used to extend an 8-hour daylength and was greatest at 25°C. Application of nitrates retarded floral initiation by about two days under short day conditions, but did not affect the re sponse to one long day. Gibberellic acid induced earlier floral initiation under short day conditions. The photoperiodic response was little affected by omitting the main light period immediately before or after the supplementary light, as long as the intensity of supplementary light was greater than 5000 lux. Short interruptions (5–10 minutes) of a single 16-hour dark period with high energy red or far-red radiation did not promote flowering. When given continuously during a single 16-hour dark period, far-red radiation was more effective in flower promotion than an equal energy of red.  相似文献

Floral induction by night interruption of Fuchsia hybrida cv. Lord Byron, a quantitative long-day plant with decussate phyllotaxis and an indeterminate flowering habit, altered neither the rate of leaf initiation nor the rate of leaf expansion; nor did flower initiation and development change the vegetative growth of the plants. This was diagnosed using plastochron duration and plastochron ratio measurements before, during, and after a 10-day induction period. A comparison between indeterminate and determinate flowering is made using these two parameters.  相似文献
