Lam , S. L., and A. C. Leopold . (Purdue U., Lafayette, Indiana.) Reversion and reinduction of flowering in Perilla. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(4): 306–310. Illus. 1961.—Plants of Perilla crispa (Thunb.) Tanaka ultimately revert to the vegetative state provided that they have received not more than about 20 cycles of short photoperiods. Reversion is markedly promoted by repeated debudding of plants induced with 35 cycles or less. Reverted plants of Perilla could be reinduced twice by photoperiodic treatment of the originally induced leaves. Timing experiments to measure the flow of flower stimulus from induced leaves suggest a gradual loss of the stimulus, as indicated by increased time to appearance of flowers and decreased flower number. It is concluded that after the inductive treatment is withdrawn, the effectiveness of the flower stimulus coming from the leaf declines with time. It is suggested that reversion is made possible by the decline of effective flower stimulus coming from the induced leaves.  相似文献

Developmental physiology of floral initiation in Nicotiana tabacum L.   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The central process in the making of a multicellular organismis the fating of cells and tissues for their terminal phenotypes. The formation of a flower from a shoot apical meristem completesa sequence of fating processes initiated in embryogenesis. Thefating of a vegetative meristem of Nicotiana tabacum L. to initiatea flower involves at least two signals and two developmentalstates. A signal from the roots maintains vegetative growth,or prevents flowering, in the young seedling. As the plant grows, the vegetative meristem gains greater competence to respondto the floral stimulus from the leaves until it is evoked, byfloral stimulus, into a florally determined state. The florallydetermined state is then expressed. These developmental processesnot only establish the time of floral initiation, but also regulateplant size as measured by the number of nodes produced. Key words: Plant size, floral stimulus, competence, floral determination, induction  相似文献

In flowers of Cajophora arechavaletae Urb. the stamens are hidden from flower visitors in naviculate petals. In the male phase the stamens successively migrate at irregular intervals to the centre of the flower where they present pollen. Therefore, non-specialised pollinators cannot predict the time of pollen presentation. The oligolectic females of Bicolletes pampeana are effective pollinators of Cajophora arechavaletae. Females and males can elicit stamen movements by pressing the scales of the nectaries outwards with their head while taking up nectar. If this stimulus is responded to, up to 3 stamens move and reach the centre of the flower on average after 2.4 min. Experiments showed that the stimulus of nectar scale pressing was responded to maximally when the inter-stimulus interval was at least 14 min. B. pampeana females have evolved a foraging strategy which is adapted to the unique pollen presentation of C. arechavalete flowers. On microforaging routes they trapline 30–60 flowers and, therefore, most frequently come back to the same flower after intervals of about 3 min. This is exactly the period after which a female can expect pollen in the centre of the flower if her previous stimulus was responded to. Competition between the females causes them to return to the flowers at such short intervals.  相似文献

Senescence of flowers of Petunia hybrida Vilm. cv Gypsy is characterizedby colour changes, wilting and abscission. In emasculated detachedflowers the onset of these processes is hastened by any treatmentwhich reduces the vigour of the stigma. Thus pricking it, excisingsegments, or freezing with liquid nitrogen all reduce the timeto morphological changes associated with corolla senescence.Removal of the stigma has the most dramatic effect, reducinglifespan of the flower by about 50 per cent, to 3 d. This reductioncan be lessened if IAA or 2,4-D is applied to the cut surfaceof the style. In intact flowers, the style may usually be implicatedin the production of a stimulus leading to corolla abscission, but abscission will also occur in the absence of the style. Some senescence acceleration takes place not only in the completeabsence of the style, but also when the upper part of the ovaryhas been excised in addition. The speeding up of senescenceand of corolla abscission cannot be due solely to damage perse since when the corolla limb was excised, leaving only thecorolla tube, the tube abscised at about the same time as thecontrols, despite the quite extensive wounding. This also impliesthat the distal parts of the corolla do not play a major rolein the development of the abscission zone at the base of thecorolla tube. A healthy, undamaged stigma appears to be very important incorolla longevity and one of its roles may be to prevent theproduction of an abscission/wilting stimulus by some other componentof the flower. Possibly auxins in the stigma are important inthat either they are mobile and protect the abscission zoneor they create a sink for other substances which are implicatedin flower senescence. Experiments using controlled environment facilities showed that flowering of Dichondra repens was promoted by chilling plants at 10 C or below. Optimum length of the chilling period was 5–6 weeks. Unchilled plants did not flower. The flowering stimulus resulting from chilling was destroyed by temperatures above 21 C. Rate of flowering was increased by short days during chilling, but short days could not substitute for the chilling requirement. Optimum daylength for flower initiation following chilling was approximately 14 hr and the optimum temperature was approximately 15 C. Flower buds developed in leaf axils of primary stems and laterals, but stem apices remained vegetative. When the chilling requirement was met flowering continued indefinitely as the plants grew.  相似文献

Flowering Responses of the Long-day Plant Lemna gibba G3   总被引:17,自引:15,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文

Lemna gibba L., strain G3, exhibits a qualitative long-day flowering response with a critical daylength on a 24-hour cycle of about 10 hours. Evidence is presented that the onset of daughter frond formation in a given frond inhibits the activity of the flowering meristem. Consequently, flower induction can only occur in fronds smaller than about 0.05 to 0.07 mm long. Although a minimum of 1 long day seems to be sufficient to induce the formation of flower primordia, at least 6 long days are required to obtain mature flowers since long days are also required for the early stages of flower development. The critical night length on 24, 48 and 72-hour cycles is respectively 14, 16, and 18 to 22 hours. The close similarity between the critical night length for the different cycle lengths is explained in terms of an inhibitory effect of darkness both on flower initiation and flower development. A 10-hour dark period is more inhibitory to flowering on a 36-hour cycle than on 24, 48, 60 or 72-hour cycles. It is suggested that darkness inhibits flowering through the formation of a light-labile flower inhibitor which acts to inhibit the functioning of the flowering stimulus.  相似文献

Employing genotypes of day-neutral tobacco that exhibit a wide range in the number of nodes produced, it has been established that node number, and plant size, in tobacco is regulated, in large part, by two endogenous signals and one developmental state, competence. All genotypes have the same level of a root signal that maintains a vegetative pattern during early growth. The number of nodes produced before the formation of the terminal flower, as well as plant size, is a function of the strength of the floral stimulus from the leaves and the competence of the terminal meristem to respond to the floral stimulus by initiating the terminal flower.  相似文献

Physiological evidence indicates that flower formation is hormonally controlled. The floral stimulus, or florigen, is formed in the leaves as a response to an inductive photoperiod and translocated through the phloem to the apical meristem. However, because of difficulties in obtaining and analyzing phloem sap and the lack of a bioassay, the chemical nature of this stimulus is one of the major unsolved problems in plant biology. A combination of microbore high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) was used to compare the contents of the phloem sap from flowering and non-flowering plants. Instead of using one- or two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, microbore HPLC separations allowed us to detect proteins/peptides that were very small and present at very low levels. We detected more than 100 components in the phloem sap of Perilla ocymoides L. and Lupinus albusL. Sequences for 16 peptides in a mass range from 1 to 9 kDa were obtained. Two of these could be identified, 11 showed similarity to known or deduced protein sequences, and three showed no similarity to any known protein or translated gene sequence. Four of these peptides were specific to, modified, or increased in plants that were flowering, indicating their possible role in flower induction. The sequences of these peptides showed similarities to two purine permeases, a protein with similarity to protein kinases, and a protein with no similarities to any known protein.  相似文献

The effect of floral stimulus on flower sex expression in monoeciouscucurbits was examined using a qualitative short-day plant,Sicyos angulatus L. Sicyos was induced to flower not only bygrafting it onto a flower-induced plant of the same speciesbut also by intergeneric grafting Onto the day-neutral plantCucumis sativus L. or the quantitative short-day plant Luffacylindrica Roem under noninductive long-day conditions. Sicyosplant grafted onto various cucumber varieties having differentgenetic backgrounds for their sex expression developed bothstaminate and pistillate inflorescences with similar sex expression. When the availability of floral stimulus was restricted as inthe case of grafting of Sicyos onto young cucumber seedlingsat the cotyledonary stage, most inflorescences appearing onthe Sicyos were staminate ones. Pistillate flowers formed onthe cucumber receptors substantially increased when they weregrafted onto Sicyos donors which had a sufficient number ofleaves induced by short-days as compared with those graftedonto noninduced ones. These results suggest that the availabilityof floral stimulus participates in the sex expression of flowersin Cucurbitaceae. Undeveloped pistillate inflorescences, whichoccasionally appear on Sicyos scion, flowered normally whenN6-benzylaminopurine was directly applied to the inflorescence. The growth retardants AMO–1618 and CCC inhibited flower formation and stem elongation in Samolus parviflorus, a long-day rosette plant, under inductive conditions. The vegetative growth of the plants, as measured by leaf formation, was affected only slightly, or not affected at all. Application of gibberellic acid (GA3) reversed completely the inhibition both of flower formation and of stem elongation caused by AMO, but relatively larger amounts of GA were required to reverse the CCC inhibition of stem elongation than that of flower formation. When applied under short-day conditions, AMO had no effect on the level of applied GA required for flower induction. When applied following long-day treatment the retardant caused some reduction of flower formation after marginal numbers of long days, but had no effect when enough long days to cause 100% flower formation were given. Other evidence indicates that the growth retardants act by inhibiting the synthesis of endogenous gibberellin. In LD plants, at least part of the action of inductive environmental conditions consists in causing an increase of gibberellin synthesis, supporting the hypothesis that relatively high GA levels are necessary for the production of the floral stimulus in this group of plants, as in long-short-day plants. The experiments with CCC indicate that stem elongation and flower formation in Samolus can be separated, and that the effect of GA on flower formation is not necessarily dependent on its effect on stem elongation.  相似文献

Whether callitrichids are naturally capable of detecting and responding to predators - or if such skills are learned - remains a controversial issue, with results differing in terms of species, predator and encounter conditions. Therefore, the behavioral response of naïve adult captive black tufted-ear marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) was assessed before, during, 0 and 4 h after a 5-min encounter with a snake and flower model. Using a two-phase cross-over design, marmosets (n = 16) were submitted to one trial for each stimulus, divided into four 5-min intervals: pre-exposure, exposure and post-exposure observations held 0 and 4 h later. The snake exposure increased the number of gazes made towards the stimulus and the time cage-mates spent close to each other, as well as induced tsik-tsik alarm/mobbing calls, while inhibiting foraging and decreasing the time spent near the snake's location. After the snake was removed, all changes were immediately reversed. Mobbing was not observed. The flower stimulus only increased direct gazes and time spent in proximity during its presentation. All marmosets were captive-born and snake-naïve yet had recently been confronted with a cat stimulus in a previous experiment. Thus, previous experiences with snakes may be required for marmosets to fully develop appropriate immediate and long-term responses.  相似文献

Sugar cane, an intermediate day plant, clearly received a stronger stimulus to flower during lengthening nights than during shortening nights. Flowering was vigorous under warm, lengthening nights (21°) but less so under cool, lengthening nights (16-17°). Warm or cool shortening nights either failed to induce flowering altogether or reduced it substantially. Under the warmer nights the inductive dark period was 10 hours 57 minutes to 11 hours 26 minutes whether the nights were lengthening or shortening. Under cooler conditions, it was longer by from 20 minutes to nearly 2 hours.  相似文献

Summary When young plants of Hordeum vulgare. Bryonia dioica. Cucumis sativus. Phaseolus vulgaris. Mimosa pudica. and Ricinus communis. were given a gentle mechanical stimulus by rubbing the internodes for about 10 s once or twice daily, elongation was significantly retarded. Plants of Cucurbita pepo Pisum sativum and Triticum aestivum did not exhibit any such response. The initial response to rubbing was very rapid, elongation stopping less than 3 min after application of the stimulus. When the stimulus was discontinued after 7 days, elongation accelerated, reaching a normal or supernormal rate within 3 or 4 days. Mechanical stimulation also affected aspects of growth and development other than stem elongation. In Mimosa pudica, flower bud production was retarded, as was the growth of the tendrils, leaves, and petioles in Bryonia dioica. It is suggested that this response be called thigmomorphogenesis, and that it represents an adaptation designed to protect plants from the stresses produced by high winds and moving animals. Some evidence indicates that thigmomorphogenesis may be mediated by ethylene.  相似文献

Vegetative plants of Xanthium strumarium L. grown in long days were induced to flower by exposure to one or several 16-hour dark periods. The distribution of male and female inflorescences on the flowering shoot was described, and a scoring system was designed to assess the development of the female inflorescences. The time of movement of the floral stimulus out of the induced leaf and the timing of action of high temperature were shown to be similar for both the apical male and lateral female inflorescences.  相似文献

The response of axillary buds to floral stimulus activity in stem pieces was examined in two near-isogenic cultivars of tobacco that differ in the recessive maryland mammoth (mm) allele, which confers short-day behavior. All axillary buds from day-neutral plants assayed on six-internode stem pieces made few nodes (less than 20) before flowering, while axillary buds from plants homozygous for mm assayed on six-internode stem pieces either did not flower in noninductive conditions or made many nodes before flowering in inductive conditions. About 80% of day-neutral axillary buds grafted onto day-neutral stem pieces did not respond to floral stimulus in stem pieces, indicating that the floral stimulus in stem pieces is ephemeral. In other graft combinations, the proportion of axillary buds that did respond to floral stimulus in stem pieces was substantially reduced from the 20% of day-neutral buds on day-neutral stem pieces that responded. These results indicate that the mm allele probably reduces both the amount of floral stimulus activity in stem pieces and the competence of axillary buds to respond.  相似文献

Background and Aims Flower colour varies within and among populations of the Rocky Mountain columbine, Aquilegia coerulea, in conjunction with the abundance of its two major pollinators, hawkmoths and bumble-bees. This study seeks to understand whether the choice of flower colour by these major pollinators can help explain the variation in flower colour observed in A. coerulea populations. Methods Dual choice assays and experimental arrays of blue and white flowers were used to determine the preference of hawkmoths and bumble-bees for flower colour. A test was made to determine whether a differential preference for flower colour, with bumble-bees preferring blue and hawkmoths white flowers, could explain the variation in flower colour. Whether a single pollinator could maintain a flower colour polymorphism was examined by testing to see if preference for a flower colour varied between day and dusk for hawkmoths and whether bumble-bees preferred novel or rare flower colour morphs.Key Results Hawkmoths preferred blue flowers under both day and dusk light conditions. Naïve bumble-bees preferred blue flowers but quickly learned to forage randomly on the two colour morphs when similar rewards were presented in the flowers. Bees quickly learned to associate a flower colour with a pollen reward. Prior experience affected the choice of flower colour by bees, but they did not preferentially visit novel flower colours or rare or common colour morphs. Conclusions Differences in flower colour preference between the two major pollinators could not explain the variation in flower colour observed in A. coerulea. The preference of hawkmoths for flower colour did not change between day and dusk, and bumble-bees did not prefer a novel or a rare flower colour morph. The data therefore suggest that factors other than pollinators may be more likely to affect the flower colour variation observed in A. coerulea.  相似文献

Flower visits are complex encounters, in which animals are attracted by floral signals, guided toward the site of the first physical contact with a flower, land, and finally take up floral rewards. At close range, signals of stamens and pollen play an important role to facilitate flower handling in bees, yet the pollen stimuli eliciting behavioral responses are poorly known. In this study, we test the response of flower‐naive bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) toward single and multimodal pollen stimuli as compared to natural dandelion pollen. As artificial pollen stimuli, we used the yellow flavonoid pigment quercetin, the scent compound eugenol, the amino acid proline, the monosaccharide glucose, and the texture of pollen‐grain‐sized glass pellets as a tactile stimulus. Three test stimuli, dandelion pollen, one out of various uni‐ and multimodal stimulus combinations, and a solvent control were presented simultaneously to individual bumblebees, whose response was recorded. The results indicate that bumblebees respond in an irreversible sequence of behavioral reactions. Bumblebees approached the visual stimulus quercetin as often as natural dandelion pollen. An additional olfactory stimulus resulted in slightly more frequent landings. The multimodal stimulus combinations including visual, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile stimuli elicited approaches, antennal contacts, and landings as often as natural pollen. Subsequent reactions like proboscis extension, mandible biting, and buzzing were more often but not regularly observed at dandelion pollen. Our study shows that visual signals of pollen are sufficient to trigger initial responses of bumblebees, whereas multimodal pollen stimuli elicit full behavioral response as compared to natural pollen. Our results suggest a major role of pollen cues for the attraction of bees toward flowers and also explain, why many floral guides mimic the visual signals of pollen and anthers, that is, the yellow and UV‐absorbing color, to direct bumblebees toward the site where they access the floral rewards.  相似文献

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in ten early blind humans, we found robust occipital activation during two odor-processing tasks (discrimination or categorization of fruit and flower odors), as well as during control auditory-verbal conditions (discrimination or categorization of fruit and flower names). We also found evidence for reorganization and specialization of the ventral part of the occipital cortex, with dissociation according to stimulus modality: the right fusiform gyrus was most activated during olfactory conditions while part of the left ventral lateral occipital complex showed a preference for auditory-verbal processing. Only little occipital activation was found in sighted subjects, but the same right-olfactory/left-auditory-verbal hemispheric lateralization was found overall in their brain. This difference between the groups was mirrored by superior performance of the blind in various odor-processing tasks. Moreover, the level of right fusiform gyrus activation during the olfactory conditions was highly correlated with individual scores in a variety of odor recognition tests, indicating that the additional occipital activation may play a functional role in odor processing.  相似文献

Treatment of the pea carpel with the ethylene action inhibitors, silver thiosulphate and 2,5-norbornadiene, retarded its senescence and extended the growth time in which the unpollinated carpel was able to respond to gibberellins. Cells of the senescent carpel have characteristics of apoptotic cells, such as nuclei condensation and internucleosomal DNA fragmentation. Both DNA laddering and condensed nuclei can be prevented by the use of the ethylene action inhibitors, while ethylene treatment accelerates DNA fragmentation. It is postulated that ethylene produced by the flower after anthesis determines the fate of the ovary/ovule; in other words, if the ovary receives no additional stimulus (pollination or gibberellin treatment), it undergoes a senescence process, with some cells showing characteristics similar to those of programmed cell death already identified in animal systems.  相似文献

Visual evoked potentials were recorded from 16 scalp locations on 10 young subjects during presentation of a series of high-quality photographs on a computer screen. The photographs consisted of equal numbers of pictures of fruit (citrus and non-citrus fruits), flowers (roses and other flowers) and objects (e.g. buildings, vehicles, animals etc.). Every picture was different in order to avoid repetition effects. The pictures were presented under four odour conditions: no odour, rose odour, jasmine odour and citrus odour. In order to keep the subjects alert they were asked to make categorizing decisions for the visual stimuli (e.g. flower or fruit). No decision was required concerning the relationship between the visual stimulus and the odour. As expected, the N400 peak was more negative when the picture stimulus did not match the odour. It is hypothesized that the N400 peak can be used as a measure of relatedness of a sensory stimulus to a previous or on-going prime, irrespective of the mode of the stimuli.  相似文献
