Allocation to vegetative growth and sexual reproduction was investigated throughout the growing season in the dioecious sedge, Carex picta, under natural conditions and following experimental manipulations. Measurements taken on unmanipulated plants showed that the sexes did not differ in the total amount of biomass they allocated to either growth or reproduction. The relatively equal investment in reproduction by the two sexes is contrary to other studies, the majority of which show greater investment in reproduction by females. Two features of the reproductive biology of C. picta may account for the equal investment: the fruit are relatively inexpensive because they are uniovulate and nonfleshy, and the stamens are relatively expensive because C. picta is wind pollinated. In contrast to the lack of differences in the amount of allocation, there were differences between the sexes in the timing of allocation to growth and reproduction: males allocated more to reproduction and less to growth up to the time of flowering, whereas females showed this pattern during the time of fruit maturation. Defoliation and inflorescence removal experiments showed that a trade-off within plants between growth and reproduction does exist. In addition, the defoliation experiment revealed a difference in the response of the two sexes: defoliated tillers on males showed a reduction in growth, whereas defoliated tillers on females did not. Overall, the data support the idea that differences in the timing of reproductive expenditure are as important as the amount of expenditure in determining many aspects of the life history strategies of the two sexes.  相似文献

The density and distribution of stomates in Carex aquatilis Wahl. in the Pacific Northwest were examined using epidermal peels of samples of leaves from natural populations, from greenhouse-grown transplants and from seedling families grown under controlled conditions. These were compared to stomatal distributions of populations in eastern North America. Populations of Carex aquatilis Wahl. form 2 groups based on the distribution and density of stomates. Carex aquatilis var. dives (Holm) Kükenthal is epistomatic, with adaxial stomatal densities of 28.7–48.5/0.1 mm2. The C. aquatilis var. aquatilis is amphistomatic, with adaxial stomatal densities of 8.1–22.2/0.1 mm2 and abaxial densities of 11.3–24.5/0.1 mm2 in the Pacific Northwest. Total stomatal frequencies are similar in both groups. Stomatal distribution and densities are here shown to not vary significantly within populations and appear to be genetically determined, as shown by progeny tests and growth of seedlings under uniform and experimental conditions. Stomatal distribution in Carex aquatilis appears to be adaptive, and intraspecific variation provides a system for determining the adaptive significance of differences in stomatal patterns.  相似文献

All Vancouveria species are habitual myrmecochores of the Viola odorata type. The anatropous, bitegmic seed develops an unusual elaiosome in the form of a large, empty, folded and lobed sac of epidermal tissue. The thin-walled assimilating capsule dehisces along an oblique weak zone that probably represents the suture between two fused and unequal carpels. In V. hexandra the capsule opens early to expose immature assimilating seeds. Decurved pedicels, down-turned fruits, and weak funiculi produce tachyspory. The related Epimedium, Jeffersonia, and Plagiorhegma have appendaged seeds and other possible myrmecochorous features resembling those of Vancouveria. Myrmecochory was probably established in the early or middle Tertiary period. The Vancouveria-Epimedium complex indicates that enormous plant migrations may be accomplished by means of ants.  相似文献

Carex mitchelliana M. A. Curtis, first described in 1843, is a cryptic member of the C. crinita Lam. species complex. Although recently attributed varietal status, historically it has been treated as both a species and a variety. In order to determine the taxonomic distinctness of this taxon, data were collected from a variety of sources including: morphology, scanning electron microscopy, chromosome counts, and biogeography. Results from scanning electron microscopy and statistical analyses of morphological data provide the strongest support for recognition of C. mitchelliana. Perigynia of C. mitchelliana are uniformly papillate; the length of the elongate papilla differs significantly among taxa (P < 0.001). Additionally, a variety of qualitative and quantitative morphological characters distinguish this taxon from the others in the complex; these include attributes of the pistillate scale, achene, perigynium, sheathing leaves, and habit. These data support and enhance those results previously reported from allozyme analyses of electrophoretic data. Although the geographical range of extant C. mitchelliana has been reduced, the historic range extends from Massachusetts to northern Florida and eastern Alabama. Chromosome counts, though not divergent from the other taxa in the complex, are presented for the first time for this species (n = 33).  相似文献

选择中国复序苔草亚属6组4亚组的代表植物14种,进行了叶片解剖学研究,观察了其横切面 和表皮特征,证明上述特征在各类群之间存在差异,具有一定的系统学意义。这14种植物叶片的横切 面和表皮都具有一些原始的性状,表明复序苔草亚属中的植物可能在苔草属中是较原始的。在所观察 的植物中,Sect.Polystachyae植物叶片解剖学特征比较一致,说明此组的建立比较合理;而Sect.Indicae 组已有明显分化,尤其是Carex scaposa C.B.Clarke和C.densifimbriata Tang et S.Y.Liang 与其它植物明显不同,而且其外部形态特征在复序苔草亚属中也比较独特,因此赞成将它们及其近缘类群做为一个组而非亚组。  相似文献

报道了国产苔草属,两亚属,7组中的16种植物在电子显微镜下果实表皮的特征和研究结果。根据种内个体间、组内种间以及亚属间的比较,作者认为在苔草属中,果实表皮显微特征在种内个体间比较稳定,变异很上;同组内种间表现出的较大相似性和不同组间存在的一定差异性。说明在组和组下等级的分类学处理以及在系统位置和亲缘关系的探讨上,果实显微特征具有重要的分类学价值。同时由于是微特征在各间甚至属间相互交叉和渗透,在划分  相似文献

Plant macrofossils from the basal inorganic sediments at Tom Swamp, north central Massachusetts, contained leaves, seeds, and fruits of arctic-alpine species, nearly all of which occur at present near the summits of Mt. Washington and Mt. Katahdin (New England) and in other alpine and arctic areas northward in eastern North America. Included were the needle-leaves of the dwarf shrub, Harrimanella hypnoides (L.) Coville, which matched comparative modern leaf samples in all anatomical details. The macrofossil assemblage was deposited before 12,830 ± 120 radiocarbon years ago and prior to the expansion of spruce populations in the region. Fossils of H. hypnoides suggest that snow beds were a regular feature of the summer landscape of southern New England during late glacial time. Calculations using the average lapse rate indicate that the mean annual paleotemperature in the Tom Swamp area may have been depressed 8–9 C below present means.  相似文献

Patterns of variation within and between Carex gynodynama and C. mendocinensis were investigated by studying allozyme and chromosome variation in natural populations and structural variation using herbarium specimens. Multivariate analyses of structural data demonstrated that C. gynodynama is clearly distinct from C. mendocinensis, and that sterile specimens similar to C. mendocinensis are intermediate between that species and C. gynodynama. The mean genetic distance between the two species, based on allozyme phenotypes at 17 enzyme-coding loci, was 0.22 ± 0.12. The sterile putative hybrids had the expected heterozygous pattern at three enzyme-coding loci at which the parental species were fixed for different alleles. Chromosome numbers are reported for the first time for both species and their putative hybrid. Carex mendocinensis had a different number in each of the three populations examined with n = 28, n = 29, or n = 30. Chromosome counts from one population of C. gynodynama revealed five plants with n = 25 and one with n = 26. Putative hybrids from this population exhibited irregular pairing at meiosis with 2n = ca. 55–57. Patterns of allozyme variation also suggest that C. mendocinensis has an outcrossing or mixed mating system but that C. gynodynama is an inbreeding species. Carex gynodynama exhibited very little variation in structure, habitat, or at the enzyme-coding loci examined, suggesting that it may have experienced a genetic bottleneck relatively recently. Carex mendocinensis had higher levels of variation both within and between populations at enzyme-coding loci and in structural features. This pattern of variation and a geographic distribution centered in serpentine areas of the Klamath–Siskiyou region, with disjunct smaller populations in serpentine areas farther south, suggest that C. mendocinensis once may have been a more widespread species.  相似文献
