Plant–pollinator interactions are thought to be major drivers of floral trait diversity. However, the relative importance of divergent pollinator‐mediated selection vs. neutral processes in floral character evolution has rarely been explored. We tested for adaptive floral trait evolution by comparing differentiation at neutral genetic loci to differentiation at quantitative floral traits in a putative Ipomopsis aggregata hybrid zone. Typical I. aggregata subsp. candida displays slender white tubular flowers that are typical of flowers pollinated by hawkmoths, and subsp. collina displays robust red tubular flowers typical of flowers pollinated by hummingbirds; yet, hybrid flower morphs are abundant across the East Slope of the Colorado Rockies. We estimated genetic differentiation (FST) for nuclear and chloroplast microsatellite loci and used a half‐sib design to calculate quantitative trait divergence (QST) from collection sites across the morphological hybrid zone. We found little evidence for population structure and estimated mean FST to be 0.032. QST values for several floral traits including corolla tube length and width, colour, and nectar volume were large and significantly greater than mean FST. We performed multivariate comparisons of neutral loci to genetic correlations within and between populations and found a strong signal for divergent selection, suggesting that specific combinations of floral display and reward traits may be the targets of selection. Our results show little support for historical subspecies categories, yet floral traits are more diverged than expected due to drift alone. Non‐neutral divergence for multivariate quantitative traits suggests that selection by pollinators is maintaining a correlation between display and reward traits.  相似文献

The floral morphology and anatomy of one representative of the Parnassioideae and two of the Brexioideae are described, and some of the recent literature dealing with the Saxifragaceae sensu lato is reviewed. Comparison of the floral structure in Parnassia to that typical of the Saxifragoideae, the subfamily constituting the Saxifragaceae sensu stricto and which, therefore, may be considered to show the basic saxifragaceous characteristics, reveals little similarity. Parnassia differs in pattern of both sepal and androecial vascularization, vascularization and degree of connation of the carpels, height in the gynoecium to which ventral bundles remain compound, possession of nectariferous staminodia, and the absence of epidermal appendages. Brexia and Ixerba (both of the Brexioideae) are strikingly dissimilar in floral structure and probably should be dissociated. While the position of Ixerba is problematical, it shares more floral characters with the Escallonioideae than with either Brexia or the Saxifragoideae and is better associated with that taxon. In both Parnassia and Brexia the vascular pattern suggests derivation of the androecium from a fascicled condition: the vascular supply of each filament consists of a cylinder of closely associated collateral bundles, and each staminodial set receives a single vascular complex which subsequently divides into as many vascular strands as there are staminodia in the set.  相似文献

A numerical taxonomic study of the angiosperm family Limnanthaceae is presented. The 21 OTUs include all taxa recognized in a recent monograph of Limnanthes (Mason, 1952), plus Floerkea proserpinacoides, two undescribed Limnanthes species, and two artificial interspecific F1 Limnanthes hybrids. One species (L. montana) was treated as two OTUs: measurements for one OTU were taken from field collections and for the other, from garden-grown plants. A maximum of 35 characters was used in the numerical analyses. Raw data for each character were given equal weighting by condensation. Coefficients of resemblance were established using the mean character difference (MCD) method. Tryon's clustering technique (called key communality cluster analysis) was used. Three numerical analyses of Limnanthaceae were made: one with all 35 characters (T analysis), one with 18 floral characters (F analysis), and one with 17 pre- or post-anthesis or vegetative characters (V analysis). Relative positions of OTUs in the T and F analyses are substantially different from those in a conventional taxonomic treatment of the family. The V analysis shows many differences from the T and F analyses. In all analyses the two OTUs representing L. montana were closer to other OTUs than to each other. The two hybrid OTUs showed greater resemblance to one parent than to the other and in two analyses one hybrid was not intermediate between the parents. Similarities between the T and F analyses are explained on the basis of the predominance of floral characters in both. The differences between these two analyses on the one hand and the V analysis and phylogenetic arrangement of the family on the other are attributed to parallelisms in the evolution of floral characters associated with iucreasing autogamy in each of the two phyletic lines in the family. Analyses emphasizing floral characters will place evolutionarily remotely related outcrossing OTUs together and unrelated, autogamous OTUs together. Using characters that are mostly unassociated with the breeding system the positions of OTUs in a numerical analysis are similar to their positions in a phylogenetic arrangement. The V analysis agrees best with suggestions concerning phylogenetic affinities among the taxa in the family, and provides a useful context for the generation of further evolutionary hypotheses.  相似文献

Twenty eight somatic hybrid plants were identified following protoplast fusions between peppermint (Mentha piperita L. cv Black Mitcham), producing high-quality oil, and spearmint (Mentha spicata L. cv Native Spearmint), likewise producing high-quality oil and also possessing resistance to verticillium wilt. Prior to fusion, peppermint protoplasts were subjected to iodoacetic acid to inhibit cell division. Protoplasts of peppermint and spearmint were fused using polyethylene glycol plus DMSO. Fusion products were cultured according to an efficient protoplast-to-plant-cycle protocol developed for peppermint. Using this protocol, iodoacetic acid-treated peppermint protoplasts were not able to divide, whereas untreated spearmint protoplasts had the ability to produce callus but not shoots. Therefore, selection of somatic hybrid calli was based on the presumed capability of hybrid cells to form calli and shoots. Shoots in vitro were initially identified as hybrids using RAPD profiles. Subsequently, observations on morphology, chromosome counts, and Southern-hybridization patterns confirmed their hybrid status. The results of verticillium tests revealed that 18 somatic hybrids were more susceptible than Native Spearmint, while hybrid II-14 had a level of susceptibility intermediate between that of the fusion parents. Oil-analysis of hybrid plants indicated that they all have a GC-profile typical of spearmint oil. Received: 8 February 1997 / Accepted: 9 April 1997  相似文献

  • Phenotypic intermediacy is an indicator of putative hybrid origin and has provided the main clues to discovering hybrid plants in nature. Mandevilla pentlandiana and M. laxa (Apocynaceae) are sister species with clear differences in floral phenotype and associated pollinator guilds: diurnal Hymenoptera and nocturnal hawkmoths, respectively. The presence of individuals with intermediate phenotypes in a wild population raises questions about the roles of visual and olfactory signals (i.e. corolla morphology and floral fragrances) as barriers to interbreeding, and how the breakdown of floral isolation occurs.
  • We examined phenotypic variation in a mixed Mandevilla population, analysing the chemical composition of floral fragrances, characterising floral shape through geometric morphometrics and assessing individual grouping through taxonomically relevant traits and an unsupervised learning algorithm. We quantified the visitation frequencies of floral visitors and tracked their foraging movements using pollen analogues.
  • The presence of morphologically intermediate individuals and pollen analogue movement suggested extensive hybridisation between M. laxa and M. pentlandiana, along with asymmetrical rates of backcrossing between these putative hybrids and M. laxa. Floral volatiles from putative hybrid individuals showed a transgressive phenotype, with additional compounds not emitted by either parental species.
  • Our results suggest the presence of a hybrid swarm between sympatric M. pentlandiana and M. laxa and indicate that initial hybridisation events between these parental species are rare, but once they occur, visits between putative hybrids and M. laxa are common and facilitate continued introgression.

Response to Chilling of Zea mays, Tripsacum dactyloides and their Hybrid   总被引:5,自引:3,他引:2
Maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) and eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides) are known for their susceptibility to chilling injuries. Their hybrid (Z. mays × T. dactyloides) showed higher tolerance to low temperatures (–2 °C) in the field than its parents. Exposure to 5 °C for 2 or 3 d reduced the variable to maximal chlorophyll fluorescence ratio (FV/FM), an indicator of the maximum photochemical efficiency of the photosystem 2, and the variable to minimal fluorescence ratio (FV/F0) more in maize and eastern gamagrass than in hybrid plants. Chlorophyll contents for rewarming plants (25 °C for 3 d) were lower than before chilling in both parents while values for hybrid plants were similar. Electrolyte leakage was higher in chilled than control plants but it did not show significant differences among genotypes. Our data suggest that hybrid plants have higher capacity to recover from chilling injury in controlled conditions than their parents.  相似文献

Auxins and auxin inhibitors from tissue extracts of normal Nicotiana plants, Nicotiana glauca, N. langsdorffii and their hybrid (which spontaneously produces tumors) were separated by ascending paper chromatography with n-butanol-distilled water. An Avena curvature test was used for demonstrating growth-promoting and growth-inhibiting substances. IAA could be found in extracts of the parents and the hybrid (RF 0.75). Hybrid tissue yielded the highest amount (37.1°), N. glauca tissue less (30.8°), and N. langsdorffii tissue the least amount (8.5°) of IAA. A second growth promoter (RF 0.35) could be separated from the tissue extracts of the parents and the hybrid, but it showed only low activity in the Avena test. Three inhibitors were present in extracts from N. langsdorffii and the hybrid at RF 0.25, 0.45, and 0.85, whereas N. glauca showed only two of them (RF 0.25 and 0.85). The inhibitor with an RF of 0.45 seemed to be identical with the acidic, benzene-insoluble “inhibitor β” of Bennet-Clark and Kefford (1953). The inhibitor (neutral, benzene-soluble) at RF 0.85 could be found in some tissue extracts of the parents and the hybrid, but showed only little activity in the curvature tests. From neutral and from acidic plant extracts within a pH range of 4.4 to 5.8 a third inhibitor with an RF of 0.25 could be separated. It seems that the high concentration of natural IAA in the hybrid is regulated by a variety of inhibitors with different specificities in the growth-regulating process. Nicotiana langsdorffii tissue has much less auxin but the same variety of inhibitors as the hybrid, whereas N. glauca tissue contains less auxin than the hybrid and only two of the three inhibitors found in N. langsdorffii and hybrid extracts.  相似文献

Summary Somatic hybrid plants were regenerated following calcium-high pH fusion of the unidirectional, sexually incompatible cross of Petunia parodii wild-type leaf mesophyll protoplasts with protoplasts from a cytoplasmic determined chlorophyll-deficient mutant of P. inflata. Genic complementation to chlorophyll synthesis and sustained growth in the selective medium was used to visually identify hybrid calluses. Hybrid calluses were subsequently regenerated to shoots, rooted, and confirmed as somatic hybrids by their intermediate floral and leaf morphology based on comparison to the 2 n = 4 x = 28 sexual counterpart, dominant anthocyanin expression in the corolla, chromosome number, and peroxidase and maleic dehydrogenase isozyme patterns. Certain cytologically stable somatic hybrids displayed aberrant reproductive and floral morphologies including subtle to moderate corolla and leaf pigment variegation, floral dimension changes and reduced pollen viability. In contrast, cytologically unstable somatic hybrids showed various degrees of aneuploidy coupled with corolla splitting, and irregularities in reproductive organs such as double stigmas and styles in addition to reduced pollen viability. Postulated mechanisms to account for these phenotypic changes in stable and unstable somatic hybrids include nuclear-cytoplasmic genomic incompatibility, chromosome loss in a biparental cytoplasm, or a phenomenon similar to hybrid dysgenesis occurring as a result of somatic fusion.Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Article No. 11376. Summary Consideration was given to the response curves and response surfaces that are obtained when genotypes are grown at various levels of environmental factors. These curves and surfaces were used to illustrate genotype-environment interactions and possible relations between two parents and their F 1.When a hybrid had a response exactly intermediate between its parents, the metric values for the hybrid were not intermediate but varied with the environment, exhibiting different degrees of dominance including overdominance (hybrid vigour). A range in dominance for the metric also was found when the response of the hybrid was more similar to one parent than the other.A hybrid with an intermediate response has a lower phenotypic variance across environments than the mean variance of its parents. In some situations the hybrid's variance is less than that of either parent.A component of the error variation for a genotype was shown to vary with the environment having a minimal value when the environment was optimal. An algebraic treatment of response curves and surfaces was presented. In some instances the metric values for two parents and their F 1 in a range of environments may be related in the form of a multiple regression.  相似文献

The interspecific F1 hybrid V. umbellata x V. minima, together with the parental species was investigated cytogenetically. Both parents showed normal meiosis, with 11 bivalents at diakinesis. The hybrid was completely pollen sterile. The cytological causes underlying sterility in the hybrid include an array of meiotic abnormalities ranging from non-pairing of chromosomes through the presence of univalents, chain and ring multivalents and anaphase bridges to the formation of micronuclei, during microsporogenesis. The presence of chain and ring multivalents at diakinesis not only demonstrates the structural hybridity of the F1 hybrid, but also suggests that small interchanges and inversions played a significant role in the speciation within the genus Vigna.  相似文献

Saline stress is responsible for significant reductions in the growth of plants, and it globally leads to limitations in the performance of crops, especially in drought-affected areas. However, a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the resistance of plants to environmental stress can lead to a better plant breeding and selection of cultivars. Mint is one of the most important medicinal plants, and it has important properties for industry, and for the medicinal and pharmacy fields. The effects of salinity on the biochemical and enzymatic properties of 18 ecotypes of mint from six different species, that is, Mentha piperita, Mentha mozafariani, Mentha rotundifolia, Mentha spicata, Mentha pulegium and Mentha longifolia, have been examined in this study. The experimental results showed that salinity increased with increasing in stress integrity influenced the enzymatic properties, proline content, electrolyte leakage, and the hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and essential oil contents. Cluster analysis and principal component analysis were conducted, and they grouped the studied species on the basis of their biochemical characteristics. According to the obtained biplot results, M. piperita and M. rotundifolia showed better stress tolerance than the other varieties, and M. longifolia was identified as being salt sensitive. Generally, the results showed that H2O2 and malondialdehyde had a positive connection with each other and showed a reverse relationship with all the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. Finally, it was found that the M. spicata, M. rotundifolia and M. piperita ecotypes could be used for future breeding projects to improve the salinity tolerance of other ecotypes.  相似文献

Aspects of vegetative and floral morphology and anatomy of five species of Eucryphia Cav. are described. Differences in wood structure, type and complexity of petiole and leaf vascularization, presence or absence of complex abaxial cuticular protrusions on the leaves, and patterns of floral vasculature are useful in species delimitation. Anatomical data are in agreement with the inclusion of Eucryphiaceae in the Rosales near Cunoniaceae.  相似文献

Somatic hybrid plants were produced by fusion of protoplasts from cell cultures of the Nicotiana tabacum L. sulfur mutant Su/Su and from leaf mesophyll of Nicotiana glauca Graham. After fusion the N. glauca protoplasts failed to survive under the selected culture condition. From the hybrid cells light green shoots were produced. The hybrid plants exhibited intermediate characters between parental species with respect to leaf morphology, trichome density, floral structure and flower color. The chromosome number of 25 hybrid plants was 2n = 72 and both N. glauca and N. tabacum chromosomes were identified in the hybrids. Results of isoenzyme analysis showed bands of both parents and a specific (hybrid) band for aspartate amino-transferase. Small subunit fraction-1-protein of somatic hybrids also consisted of the sum of N. glauca and N. tabacum bands. Leaf spot formation associated with the Su locus of N. tabacum was observed in somatic hybrids.  相似文献

The fumigant effect of Mentha piperita and Ocimum basilicum oils and their mixture against adults and eggs of Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) was evaluated. Bioassay experiments showed that Ocimum basilicum oil was significantly effective against adult and egg stage which was the least effective. However, in the fumigant toxicity experiments against adult stage, Ocimum basilicum oil at a dose of 1.0 μl/38.5 ml air caused 100% mortality (LC50 = 1.88), the mixture of both oils at a dose of 6.0 μl/38.5 ml air caused 100% mortality (LC50 = 10.3) and Mentha piperita oil at a dose of 80.0 μl/38.5 ml air caused 80.0% mortality (LC50 = 41.224) during a one day exposure period. Regarding the oviposition deterrent activity, Ocimum basilicum oil achieved 100% oviposition deterrent (at a dose of 0.5 μl/38.5 ml air) followed by the mixture of Mentha piperita and Ocimum basilicum oils, which achieved 71.22% oviposition deterrent (at a dose of 1.0 μl/38.5 ml air) and Mentha piperita oil, which achieved 39.6% oviposition deterrent (at a dose of 5.0 μl/38.5 ml air). The essential oils and their mixtures studied here determined a significant decrease in the number of eggs hatched and in the emergence of adults. The eggs failed to hatch on using Ocimum basilicum oil at a dose of 0.6 μl/38.5 ml air. However, the number of eggs hatched decreased to 7.4 on using a mixture of oils at a dose of 2.0 μl/38.5 ml air and 14.0 with Mentha piperita oil at a dose of 80.0 μl/38.5 ml air compared with 25.0 eggs hatched in the control experiments. On the other hand, the percentage reduction in emerging adults were 100% for Ocimum basilicum oil, 90.9% for a mixture of the two oils and 72.7% for Mentha piperita oil. Results showed that Ocimum basilicum oil and Ocimum basilicum oils plus Mentha piperita oils in blend are potential alternatives to synthetic fumigants in the treatment of durable agricultural products. Successful adoption of plant oils in the protection of food commodities promises an eco-friendly option compatible with international biosafety regulations.  相似文献

Wild-type strains of the interfertile species Chlamydomonas eugametos (UTEX 9 and 10) and Chlamydomonas moewusii (UTEX 96 and 97) male readily and reciprocally; however, considerable lethality occurs among F1 hybrid meiotic products. We prepared two hybrid backcross lineages using C. eugametos and C. moewusii. One lineage began with the cross C. eugametos mating-type-plus (mt+) × C. moewusii mating-type-minus (mt?). An F1 mt+ hybrid from this cross was back-crossed to C. moewusii mt?, and a B1 mt+ hybrid was recovered. The B1 hybrid was again backcrossed to C. moewusii mt?, and this process was repeated through the fifth backcross. The other backcross lineage began with the reciprocal cross C. moewusii mt+× C. eugametos mt? and employed C. eugametos as the recurring mt? parent. This lineage also was continued through the fifth backcross. Meiotic product survival in the reciprocal interspecific crosses was less than 10%. In successive back-cross generations associated with both lineages, this value increased progressively to a maximum of 85–90%, the level observed for the intraspecific crosses. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that multiple genetic differences exist between C. eugametos and C. moewusii and that these are the major source of meiotic product lethality associated with the interspecific crosses. The inheritance of chloroplast genetic markers for resistance to streptomycin (sr-2) and for resistance to erythromycin (er-nM1) was also scored w the interspecific crosses and in the backcrosses. Most hybrid zygospores transmitted the resistance markers of the mt+ parent only, or of both parents, with the former zygospore type being more common. Although the intraspecific C. eugametos and C. moewusii crosses differ conspicuously with respect to the fraction of zygospores which transmit chloroplast genetic markers of both parents, the inheritance of chloroplast genetic markers in the interspecific crosses and backcrosses at' scribed here failed to clarify the genetic basis for this difference.  相似文献

Vanda Mimi Palmer is the product of a cross between Vanda Tan Chay Yan and Vanda tessellata. The flower of this hybrid produces a sweet-smelling fragrance during day time at the open-flower stage. This study aimed to investigate the floral scent constituents in Vanda Mimi Palmer. Scent emission analysis of this orchid was carried out at different time points in a 24-h cycle and also at different floral developmental stages. A comparison was also made on the volatiles emitted by Vanda Mimi Palmer and both of its parents. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that the scent of Vanda Mimi Palmer was dominated by terpenoid, benzenoid, and phenylpropanoid compounds. The identified terpenoids were ocimene, linalool oxide, linalool, and nerolidol; while the benzenoid and phenylpropanoid compounds were methylbenzoate, benzyl acetate, phenylethanol, and phenylethyl acetate. The emission of terpenoid, benzenoid, and phenylpropanoid compounds was developmentally and temporally regulated. Comparison of the volatiles emitted by both of its parents showed that the scent of Vanda Mimi Palmer is dissimilar to that of its fragrant parent, V. tessellata.  相似文献

Premise of the study: Hybridization is an important evolutionary force in the history of angiosperms; however, there are few examples of stabilized species derived through homoploid hybrid speciation. Homoploid hybrid species are generally detected via the presence of genetic additivity of parental markers, novel ecological and spatial distinctions, and novel morphological traits, all of which may aid in the successful establishment of hybrid species from parental types. Speciation and diversification within the genus Castilleja (Orobanchaceae) has been attributed to high levels of hybridization and polyploidy, though currently there are no examples of homoploid hybrid speciation within the genus. We employed multiple lines of evidence to examine a putative hybrid origin in C. christii, a rare endemic, known only from 80 hectares at the summit of Mt. Harrison (Cassia Co., Idaho). • Methods: We used granule-bound starch synthase II (waxy) sequences and 26 morphological characters to address hybridization between C. christii and widespread congeners C. miniata and/or C. linariifolia in an area of sympatry. Chromosomes of C. christii were also counted for the first time. • Key results: All 230 direct-sequenced C. christii individuals had the additive genomes of both C. miniata and C. linariifolia. Castilleja christii shares traits with both parents but also has floral characters that are unique and transgressive. Cytological counts indicated that all three taxa are diploid. • Conclusions: We conclude that C. christii is a stabilized homoploid hybrid derivative of C. linariifolia and C. miniata and is likely following an independent evolutionary trajectory from its progenitors.  相似文献

The delimitation of Bignoniaceae and Scrophulariaceae has long been a taxonomic problem. Several genera, including Paulownia, Schlegelia, Gibsoniothamnus, and Synapsis, have been variously placed in one or the other family. Differences between these two families have been noted with regard to the presence of endosperm, embryo and seed morphology, and placentation; however, the lack of comprehensive data on the distribution of such characters within these two families left the delimitation problem unsolved. A comprehensive study of floral anatomy confirmed a basic difference in the placentation of these two families, as well as a basic difference in gynoecial vascularization. Paulownia has a floral anatomy, embryo morphology, and seed morphology consistent with placement in Scrophulariaceae. While reminiscent of Bignoniaceae, Paulownia is not an intermediate genus linking the two families. Schlegelia and Gibsoniothamnus have a floral anatomy consistent with placement in Scrophulariaceae. Schlegelia also has a scrophulariaceous seed morphology. Considered anomalous in the Bignoniaceae, the Schlegelieae similarly are distinct in the Scrophulariaceae.  相似文献

Summary Electrophoretic profiles of crude protein extracts from seed of F1 hybrids and reciprocal crosses among diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid wheats were compared with those of their respective parental species. The electrophoretic patterns within each of three pairs of reciprocal crosses, T.boeoticum X T.urartu, T.monococcun X T. urartu and T.dicoccum X T. araraticum, were different from one another but were identical with those of their respective maternal parents. Protein bands characteristic of the paternal parents were missing in F1 hybrid seed suggesting that the major seed proteins in wheat were presumably regulated by genotype of the maternal parent rather than by the seed genotype. However, in another three pairs of reciprocal crosses, T.boeoticum X T. durum, T.dicoccum X T.aestivum and T. zhukovskyi x T. aestivum, protein bands attributable to the paternal parents were present in the F1 hybrid seeds indicating that the seed proteins were not always exclusively regulated by the maternal genotype. The expression of paternal genomes is presumably determined by dosage and genetic affinity of the maternal and paternal genomes in the hybrid endosperm. The maternal regulation of seed protein content is probably accomplished through the maternal control over seed size. The seed protein quality may, however, depend upon the extent of expression of the paternal genome.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Background: Hybridization is a key driver of plant speciation, and understanding ongoing hybridization provides insights into the underlying process. We studied a hybrid complex in Mediterranean Cyclamen between common C. repandum and rare C. balearicum on Sardinia.

Aims: We analyzed variation in the frequency and morphology of different floral types to assess the degree of hybridization and analyze the ecological niche to better understand factors that influence the maintenance of hybrid populations.

Methods: We recorded the frequency of the different flower color-types in 45 populations and measured floral traits in 10 of them. We characterized the spatial extent and climatic niche of this hybrid complex. We analyzed floral type variation in four traits (flower size, style and anther length, herkogamy).

Results: Hybrid populations occupy a wide area on the NW coast of the island (~1000km2). Sites dominated by hybrid floral types are ecologically marginal for the common parent. The C. repandum-like type is present in all populations and shows a decrease in style and anther length and herkogamy in populations containing a greater proportion of hybrids.

Conclusions: This hybrid complex provides an ideal situation to examine reproductive isolation due to variation in the ecological niche of different floral types.  相似文献
