Although all chloroplasts appear to have been derived from a common ancestor, a major schism occurred early in the evolution of eukaryotic algae that gave rise to red and green photoautotrophic lineages. In Paleozoic and earlier times, the fossil record suggests that oceanic eukaryotic phytoplankton were dominated by the green (chl b‐containing) algal line. However, following the end‐Permian extinction, a diverse group of eukaryotic phytoplankton evolved from secondary symbiotic associations in the red (chl c‐containing) line and subsequently rose to ecological prominence. In the contemporary oceans, red eukaryotic phytoplankton taxa continue to dominate marine pelagic food webs, whereas the green line is relegated to comparatively minor ecological and biogeochemical roles. To help elucidate why the oceans are not dominated by green taxa, we analyzed and compared whole plastid genomes in both the red and green lineages. Our results suggest that whereas all algal plastids retain a core set of genes, red plastids retain a complementary set of genes that potentially confer more capacity to autonomously express proteins regulating oxygenic photosynthetic and energy transduction pathways. We hypothesize that specific gene losses in the primary endosymbiotic green plastid reduced its portability for subsequent symbiotic associations. This corollary of the plastid “enslavement” hypothesis may have limited subsequent evolutionary advances in the green lineage while simultaneously providing a competitive advantage to the red lineage.  相似文献

The de novo pyrimidine biosynthetic pathway consists of six enzymes: carbamoyl‐phosphate synthetase II (CPS II), aspartate carbamoyltransferase (ACT), dihydroorotase (DHO), dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, orotate phosphoribosyltransferase, and orotidine‐5′‐monophosphate decarboxylase. The origin and organization of the first three enzymes differ markedly between Opisthokonta (Metazoa and Fungi) and the Amoebozoa and green plants. However, no information has been available regarding the characteristics of such genes in other photosynthetic eukaryotes. In this study, we examined the pyrimidine biosynthetic cluster in the primitive red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae P. DeLuca et al. isolate 10D. Unlike the situation in green plants, the CPS II, ACT, and DHO of C. merolae were fused to form a single open reading frame (the CAD complex), as in the Opisthokonta and Amoebozoa. Phylogenetic analysis of the CPS domain sequences suggested that this red algal CAD complex did not result from a recent lateral gene transfer from Metazoa or Fungi but that the fusion of the three genes occurred before the divergence of Opisthokonta, Amoebozoa, and the red algae. These results cast doubt on the recent hypothesis that the Opisthokonta and Amoebozoa form a monophyletic group, based on the presence in both of the CAD complex.  相似文献

Although the dinophytes generally possess red‐algal‐derived secondary plastids, tertiary plastids originating from haptophyte and diatom ancestors are recognized in some lineages within the Dinophyta. However, little is known about the nuclear‐encoded genes of plastid‐targeted proteins from the dinophytes with diatom‐derived tertiary plastids. We analyzed the sequences of the nuclear psbO gene encoding oxygen‐evolving enhancer protein from various algae with red‐algal‐derived secondary and tertiary plastids. Based on our sequencing of 10 new genes and phylogenetic analysis of PsbO amino acid sequences from a wide taxon sampling of red algae and organisms with red‐algal‐derived plastids, dinophytes form three separate lineages: one composed of peridinin‐containing species with secondary plastids, and the other two having haptophyte‐ or diatom‐derived tertiary plastids and forming a robust monophyletic group with haptophytes and diatoms, respectively. Comparison of the N‐terminal sequences of PsbO proteins suggests that psbO genes from a dinophyte with diatom‐derived tertiary plastids (Kryptoperidinium) encode proteins that are targeted to the diatom plastid from the endosymbiotic diatom nucleus as in the secondary phototrophs, whereas the fucoxanthin‐containing dinophytes (Karenia and Karlodinium) have evolved an additional system of psbO genes for targeting the PsbO proteins to their haptophyte‐derived tertiary plastids from the host dinophyte nuclei.  相似文献

Populus trichocarpa is an ecologically important tree across western North America. We used a large population sample of 498 accessions over a wide geographical area genotyped with a 34K Populus SNP array to quantify geographical patterns of genetic variation in this species (landscape genomics). We present evidence that three processes contribute to the observed patterns: (1) introgression from the sister species P. balsamifera, (2) isolation by distance (IBD), and (3) natural selection. Introgression was detected only at the margins of the species’ distribution. IBD was significant across the sampled area as a whole, but no evidence of restricted gene flow was detected in a core of drainages from southern British Columbia (BC). We identified a large number of FST outliers. Gene Ontology analyses revealed that FST outliers are overrepresented in genes involved in circadian rhythm and response to red/far‐red light when the entire dataset is considered, whereas in southern BC heat response genes are overrepresented. We also identified strong correlations between geoclimate variables and allele frequencies at FST outlier loci that provide clues regarding the selective pressures acting at these loci.  相似文献

Protonemata of Lygodium japonicum turn biplanar in both red and blue light regimes and remain filamentous in far-red light. Biplanar gametophytes formed in red light are longer than broad with long, rectangular cells, whereas in blue light they appear broader than long with short, isodiametric cells. Transfer of protonemata of all ages from far-red regime to red or blue light induces a morphological type of growth characteristic of the new light regime. However, only relatively young biplanar forms transferred from red or blue light are able to resume filamentous type of growth in a subsequent regime of far-red light.  相似文献

A kelp/red algal symbiosis is described from nature based on extensive collections from the San Juan Islands, Washington. Kelp gametophytes were found as endophytes in the cell walls of seventeen species of red algae in three different kelp communities. Host red algae were mostly filamentous (e.g., Pleonosporium vancouverianum) or polysiphonous (e.g. Polysiphonia paniculata). The kelp gametophytes completed vegetative and reproductive development in the hosts with gametangia formed at the host surface and with sporophytes up to several mm in height being produced while still attached to the host. To date, none of the kelp gametophytes from nature have been identified to genus or species, although the gametophyte of Nereocystis luetkeana is a potential candidate for the symbiosis. Preliminary observations from Nova Scotia and the Isle of Man have not found the association in the Atlantic Ocean. Laboratory studies in Korea successfully reconstructed the symbiosis in the red alga Aglaothamnion oosumiense using zoospores of Undaria pinnatifida but not Laminaria religiosa. Here we outline the development of the symbiosis and discuss the potential adaptive significance of the kelp/red algal interaction.  相似文献

Saline incubation extracts of mature erythrocytes were assayed in vivo by a variety of techniques in order to study their ability to modify the proliferation of maturing erythroid cells. Using comparable extracts from granulocytes and lymphocytes, the specificity of the effect of the red cell extract for erythroid cells was confirmed by measurement of autoradiographic labelling indices, radio-iron incorporation and spleen colony growth. The erythroid cells were found to be very sensitive to the effects of the extract, as little as 10 μg per mouse producing a maximum effect on iron incorporation. It was found that the extract does not block erythroid cell proliferation completely but simply lengthens the cell cycle, mainly by increasing the G1 phase of the cycle. There was no effect on the committed erythroid precursor cells. The in vivo activity, specificity and non-toxicity to the cells, together with the cells' sensitivity to red cell extract suggest, therefore, that this inhibitor may play a physiological role in the control of red cell production.  相似文献

Cryptophytes are photosynthetic protists that have acquired their plastids through the secondary symbiotic uptake of a red alga. A remarkable feature of cryptophytes is that they maintain a reduced form of the red algal nucleus, the nucleomorph, between the second and third plastid membranes (periplastidial compartment, PC). The nucleomorph is thought to be a transition state in the evolution of secondary plastids with this genome ultimately being lost (e.g., as in heterokonts, haptophytes, euglenophytes) when photosynthesis comes under full control of the “host” nucleus. For this to happen, all genes for plastid function must be transferred from the nucleomorph to the nucleus. In this regard, it is generally assumed that nucleomorph genes with functions unrelated to plastid or PC maintenance are lost. Surprisingly, we show here the existence of a novel type of actin gene in the host nucleus of the cryptophyte, Pyrenomonas helgolandii, that has originated from the nucleomorph genome of the symbiont. Our results demonstrate for the first time that secondary symbionts can contribute genes to the host lineage that are unrelated to plastid function. These genes are akin to the products of gene duplication and provide a source of evolutionary novelty that could significantly increase the genetic diversity of the host lineage. We postulate that this may be a common phenomenon in algae containing secondary plastids that has yet to be fully appreciated due to a dearth of evolutionary studies of nuclear genes in these taxa.  相似文献

The influence of red, blue, green, and white light on growth and photosynthetic rates, carbon metabolism, and rates of release of extracellular compounds in the freshwater alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Dangeard was examined. Relative growth constants were 0.28, 0.32, 0.40, and 0.41 in green, white, blue, and red light, respectively. Photosynthetic rates were higher in white, blue, or red than in green light of the same intensity. More than 66% of the 14CO2 assimilated by cells grown under blue or green light was incorporated into the ethanol-insoluble fraction, compared with about 50% in cells grown under white or red light. The percentage of sugars in this fraction was significantly higher in cells grown under green or red light than in cells cultured in white or blue light, while the percentage of proteins was highest in blue light. Light quality also influenced the composition of the ethanol-soluble fraction. The percentage of organic acids was highest in cells grown in green and white light, while amino acids were highest in blue and green cultures. The percentage of ethanol-soluble sugars was greatest in cultures grown in blue and red light. The percentage release of dissolved organic carbon into the medium was highest in white light and lowest in blue or red light. The nature of the extracellular products varied according to the quality of light under which the cells were cultured, but had no consistent relation to the nature or concentration or components in the ethanol-soluble fraction.  相似文献

In several groups of parasites including insect, flowering plant, fungal, and red algal parasites, morphological similarities of the parasites and their specific hosts have led to hypotheses that these parasites evolved from their hosts. But these conclusions have been criticized because the morphological features shared by parasite and host may be the result of convergent evolution. In this study, we examine the hypothesis, originally put forth by Setchell, that adelphoparasitic red algae, that is, parasitic red algae that are morphologically very similar to their hosts, evolved from their specific red algal hosts. Rather than comparing morphological features of parasites and hosts, small-subunit 18S nuclear ribosomal DNA and the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITSs) of the nuclear ribosomal repeat are compared for five parasites, their hosts, and related nonhosts from four red algal orders. These comparisons reveal that each of these adelphoparasites has evolved either directly from the host on which it is currently found, or it evolved from some other taxon that is closely related to the modern host. The parasites Gardneriella tuberifera, Rhodymeniocolax botryoides, and probably Gracilariophila oryzoides evolved from their respective hosts Sarcodiotheca gaudichaudii, Rhodymenia pacifica, and Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis, respectively. The parasite Faucheocolax attenuata evolved from either Fauchea laciniata or Fauchea fryeana and subsequently radiated onto the other host species. Presently this parasite is found on both hosts. Lastly, some parasitic genera such as Plocamiocolax are polyphyletic in their origins. A species of Plocamiocolax from an Antarctic Plocamium cartilagineum appears to have evolved from its host whereas the common Plocamiocolax pulvinata that occurs along the west coast of North America likely evolved from Plocamium violaceum and radiated secondarily onto its present day host, Plocamium cartilagineum.  相似文献

Previous phylogenetic studies of the Rhodophyta have provided a framework for understanding red algal phylogeny, but there still exists the need for a comprehensive analysis using a broad sampling of taxa and sufficient phylogenetic information to clearly define the major lineages. In this study, we determined 48 sequences of the PSI P700 chl a apoprotein A1 (psaA) and rbcL coding regions and established a robust red algal phylogeny to identify the major clades. The tree included most of the lineages of the Bangiophyceae (25 genera, 48 taxa). Seven well‐supported lineages were identified with this analysis with the Cyanidiales having the earliest divergence and being distinct from the remaining taxa; i.e. the Porphyridiales 1–3, Bangiales, Florideophyceae, and Compsopogonales. We also analyzed data sets with fewer taxa but using seven proteins or the DNA sequence from nine genes to resolve inter‐clade relationships. Based on all of these analyses, we propose that the Rhodophyta contains two new subphyla, the Cyanidiophytina with a single class, the Cyanidiophyceae, and the Rhodophytina with six classes, the Bangiophyceae, Compsopogonophyceae, Florideophyceae, Porphyridiophyceae classis nov. (which contains Porphyridium, Flintiella, and Erythrolobus), Rhodellophyceae, and Stylonematophyceae classis nov. (which contains Stylonema, Bangiopsis, Chroodactylon, Chroothece, Purpureofilum, Rhodosorus, Rhodospora, and Rufusia). We also describe a new order, Rhodellales, and a new family, Rhodellaceae (with Rhodella, Dixoniella, and Glaucosphaera).  相似文献

Temperature is one of the major environmental factors that affect the distribution, growth rate, and life cycle of intertidal organisms, including red algae. In an effort to identify the genes involved in the high‐temperature tolerance of Porphyra, we generated 3,979 expression sequence tags (ESTs) from gametophyte thalli of P. seriata Kjellm. under normal growth conditions and high‐temperature conditions. A comparison of the ESTs from two cDNA libraries allowed us to identify the high temperature response (HTR) genes, which are induced or up‐regulated as the result of high‐temperature treatment. Among the HTRs, HTR2 encodes for a small polypeptide consisting of 144 amino acids, which is a noble nuclear protein. Chlamydomonas expressing the Porphyra HTR2 gene shows higher survival and growth rates than the wild‐type strain after high‐temperature treatment. These results suggest that HTR2 may be relevant to the tolerance of high‐temperature stress conditions, and this Porphyra EST data set will provide important genetic information for studies of the molecular basis of high‐temperature tolerance in marine algae, as well as in Porphyra.  相似文献

When protonemata of Adiantum capillus-veneris L. which had been grown filamentously under continuous red light were transferred to continuous white light, the apical cell divided transversely twice, but the 3rd division was longitudinal. An intervening period of darkness lasting from 0 to 90 hr either between the 1st and the 2nd cell division or between the 2nd and the 3rd one did not affect the number of protonemata in which the 3rd cell division was longitudinal. The insertion of red light instead of darkness greatly decreased the percentage of 1st longitudinal divisions occurring at the 3rd division, and increased the number of transverse divisions. Fifty percent reduction of induction of 1st longitudinal division was caused by ca. 50 hr exposure to red light between 1st and 2nd division and by ca. 20 hr between 2nd and 3rd division, and total loss was induced by an exposure of ca. 100 hr or longer to red light in the former and by ca. 40 hr longer in the latter. Thus, by using an appropriate intervening dark period or exposure to red light, the orientation and timing of cell division could be controlled in apical cell of the fern protonemata.  相似文献

The small subunit ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequence of Gracilaria lemaneiformis Bory Weber-van Bosse was inferred from analysis of rRNA coding regions that were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction method. Comparison of the G. lemaneiformis small subunit rRNA to homologous genes of diverse eukaryotes demonstrated that the red algal divergence was nearly simultaneous with the separation of plants, fungi, animals and many other protist lineages. This result conflicts with those of 5S rRNA sequence and plastid based phytogenies which suggest that red algae represent an early divergence in the eukaryotic line of descent. Further, algae appear to be of polyphyletic origin and red algae are unrelated to higher fungi.  相似文献

Cell walls of the generic phase of the freshwater red alga Lemanea annulata Kütz were mechanically isolated and chemically characterized. Walls consisted mainly of polysaccharide with lesser quantities of associated protein and lipid. The major wall component was alkali-soluble xylan, comprised mainly of 4-linked β-xylopyranosyl residues and small amounts of 3-O-substituted β-xylopyranosyl residues. Hot water extracts yielded non-sulfated polymers, with 3- or 3,4-linked β-galactosyl residues alternating with 4-linked α-glucuronosyl residues as the predominant structural features. This acid polysaccharide shares many characteristics of the mucilage previously described from the freshwater genus Batrachospermum. Isolated cell walls of L. annulata contained approximately 6% cellulose. Cellobiohydrolase/colloidal gold labelling of cell walls revealed β-4-glycan throughout the fibrillar portion of the wall. Wall protein consisted of at least 17 amino acids, of which threonine and alanine were the most abundant. Polysaccharides of the cell walls of L. annulata differ from those of marine red algae and are similar to those described for other Batrachospermales.  相似文献

Although modular construction is considered the key to adaptive growth or growth‐form plasticity in sessile taxa (e.g., plants, seaweeds and colonial invertebrates), the serial expression of genes in morphogenesis may compromise its evolutionary potential if growth forms emerge as integrated wholes from module iteration. To explore the evolvability of growth form in the red seaweed, Asparagopsis armata, we estimated genetic variances, covariances, and cross‐environment correlations for principal components of growth‐form variation in contrasting light environments. We compared variance–covariance matrices across environments to test environmental effects on heritable variation and examined the potential for evolutionary change in the direction of plastic responses to light. Our results suggest that growth form in Asparagopsis may constitute only a single genetic entity whose plasticity affords only limited evolutionary potential. We argue that morphological integration arising from modular construction may constrain the evolvability of growth form in Asparagopsis, emphasizing the critical distinction between genetic and morphological modularity in this and other modular taxa.  相似文献
