The present study was focused to evaluate the phytoplankton biodiversity in two freshwater perennial lakes of Sulur and Ukkadam of Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu, India. The study period was two years from March 2012 to February 2014. Results revealed that totally 50 species of phytoplankton include 14 Cyanophyceae, 19 Chlorophyceae, 14 Bacillariophyceae, and 3 Euglenophyceae were recorded from the Sulur lake and 36 species of phytoplankton comprising 9 species of Cyanophyceae, 15 species of Chlorophyceae, 10 species of Bacillariophyceae and 2 species of Euglenophyceae were noticed in Ukkadam lake during the study period. The recorded phytoplankton density was ranged between 22,380 and 80,590 cells/l in Sulur lake and 29,350 and 1,16,255 cells/l in Ukkadam lake. Thus, the present study overall dominance of phytoplankton group was Chlorophyceae followed by Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, and Euglenophyceae. The phytoplankton population was recorded maximum in Ukkadam lake when compared to Sulur lake. Hence, the study revealed that both Ukkadam and Sulur lakes possess an appreciable quantum of phytoplankton and it can be used for fish culture.  相似文献

A phosphotungstic acid-chromic acid mixture selectively stains the plasma membrane of whole cells of selected members of the Chlorophyceae, Charophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Chrysophyceae, and Rhodophyceae, and the plasma membrane in cell-free fractions of Mougeotia (Chlorophyceae). The procedure is not effective on the plasma membrane of the cyanophycean Scytonema or the cyanophycean endosymbiont of Glaucocystis. Staining of the cell walls of Chlamydomonas, Bangia, and Scytonema and the pellicle and sliding junction of Euglena and Astasia suggest that PTA-CrO3 reactivity may be associated with glycoproteins in the cell walls and plasma membranes.  相似文献

Carotenoids in eukaryotic phototrophic organisms can be classified into two groups; β-carotene and its derivatives, and α-carotene and its derivatives. We re-examined distribution of α-carotene and its derivatives among various taxa of aquatic algae (17 classes) and land plants. α-carotene and its derivatives were found from Rhodophyceae (macrophytic type), Cryptophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Chlorarachniophyceae, Prasinophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Ulvophyceae, Charophyceae, and land plants, while they could not be detected from Glaucophyceae, Rhodophyceae (unicellular type), Chryosophyceae, Raphidophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Phaeophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Eustigmatophyceae, Haptophyceae, and Dinophyceae. We also analyzed the chirality of α-carotene and/or its derivatives, such as lutein and siphonaxanthin, and found all of them had only (6'R)-type, not (6'S)-type.  相似文献

The effect of fluctuations in water level on phytoplankton development (abundance, biomass, size structure, taxonomic composition, species diversity and rate of community compositional change) in three vegetated lakes of the Paraná River floodplain (27° 27′?S; 58° 55′?W) were studied. Between September 1995 and June 1996 there were two inputs of lotic water. Ordering of physical and chemical parameters (Principal Component Analysis) allowed the differentiation of two phases: I) without lotic influence (limnophase) and II) with lotic influence (potamophase). Two-hundred fifty-eight algal taxa were identified, of which Euglenophyceae showed the highest number of taxa (65% of total). Small Chlorophyceae and Cryptophyceae (C-strategists) predominated in density in both periods. During potamophase, the input of nutrients from a flood event produced an increase in algal biomass and a shift in phytoplankton composition from a Chlorophyceae (C-strategists), to a Cyanophyceae and Euglenophyceae (S-strategists), dominated comunity. Bacillariophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Dinophyceae and Xanthophyceae were best represented during limnophase. All phytoplankton attributes showed significant differences between phases (limnophase vs potamophase) but not among lakes. These results support the hypothesis that hydrology (floods) clearly exerts an overall impact on the phytoplankton community composition in lakes of the Paraná River floodplain. Hydrology effects the lake water chemistry, conditioned by the isolation time prior to a flood, the horizontal dragging and exchange of algae during floods, and the water residence time and aquatic vegetation coverage.  相似文献

Abstract

The density variations and phytoplankton structure of the internal Gulf of Olbia (north-east Sardinia) from July 1992 to July 1993 are described.

The most important class was the Bacillariophyceae, because it accounted for the maximum values and because it dominated over about one-third of the study cycle. The picoplankton was present practically all the year round with the greatest development from September to March. Prymnesiophyceae, Dinophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Euglenophyceae were found more numerously in summer and autumn 1992 than in the rest of the year, while Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Chrysophyceae were mostly found in spring and summer 1993.

Among the 16 species that expressed the highest mean yearly density values (greater than 1×104 cell I-1), 10 were Bacillariophyceae, 2 Dinophyceae, 3 Chrysophyceae and 1 Chlorophycea. The Bacillariophyceae have also been the dominant class in floristic terms (49 taxa on 95 total), followed by the Dinophyceae (26), the Chlorophyceae (5), the Chrysophyceae (5), the Prymnesiophyceae (4), the Prasinophyceae (2), the Euglenophyceae (2) and the Cyanophyceae (2).  相似文献

Suitable conditions for the isolation and selection of generic markers were determined by testing the growth of nine axenic strains of lipid-producing algae (representatives of Bacillariophyceae, Eustigmatophyceae, and Chlorophyceae) under a variety of conditions. Mixotrophic, heterotrophic, or anaerobic growth on twenty different carbon compounds was determined. In addition, ten different carbon compounds was determined. In addition, ten different nitrogen-containing compounds were supplied as the sole nitrogen source to ascertain which of these could be utilized. Resistances to various antibiotics and herbicides were also assessed. The algae utilized a variety of compounds as their sole nitrogen source, and some species also grew heterotrophically or mixotrophically on a variety of carbon compounds. This suggests that the algae are not only able to transport these compounds into the cell but that the biochemical pathways necessary for their utilization are present and could be targeted for mutagenesis. Anaerobic growth was not possible on any of the photosystem II inhibitors diuron and atrazine and the 70S ribosome inhibitors erythromycin and streptomycin. However, the diatoms were insensitive to spectinomycin and sulfometuron methyl. Information about drug sensitivities permitted the selection of drug resistant mutants. Mutagenized cultures produced colonies when plated on media containing drug concentrations that were growth-inhibiting for wild-type cultures. Mutations were recovered in Monoraphidium, Nannochloropsis and Navicula species.  相似文献

This data paper reports the abundance of phytoplankton species in monthly or biweekly samples collected from May 1978 through March 2010 at two stations on Lake Kasumigaura, a shallow lake that is the second-largest lake in Japan. The data set of quantitatively over several decades is unique among the available published data papers concerning lakes or plankton and continues to be freely available. The monitoring has been performed as a component of the Lake Kasumigaura Long-term Environmental Monitoring program, conducted by the National Institute for Environmental Studies since 1977. The data set details 173 phytoplankton species (or taxa), which can be identified by using an optical microscope and records their abundance. The abundance of each species is expressed in units of volume (??m3) per milliliter of lake water. This approach allows quantitative comparisons among taxa because the cell size of phytoplankton varies by several orders of magnitude among taxa. The phytoplankton data include 39 species (taxa) of Cyanophyta, 67 Chlorophyceae (Chlorophyta), 3 Prasinophyceae (Chlorophyta), 1 Raphidophyceae (Heterokontophyta), 6 Euglenophyceae (Euglenozoa), 4 Dinophyceae (Dinophyta), 38 Bacillariophyceae (Heterokontophyta), 6 Chrysophyceae (Heterokontophyta), 7 Xanthophyceae (Heterokontophyta), 1 Cryptophyceae (Cryptophyta) and 1 Prymnesiophyceae (Haptophyta). The data have been used for ecological and environmental studies and for studies on lake management.  相似文献

A simultaneous application of negative phase contrast and polarization microscopy was used to study the internal structure of microbial cells. Negative phase contrast allowed us to display the fine cell structures with a refractive index of light approaching that of the environment, e.g., the cytoplasm, and converted an invisible phase image to a visible amplitude one. In the polarizing microscope, cross-polarizing filters, together with first-order quartz compensator and a turntable, showed maximum birefringence of individual structures. Material containing algae was collected in ponds in the villages Sýko?ice and Zbe?no (Protected Landscape Area K?ivoklátsko). Objects were studied in a laboratory microscope (Carl Zeiss Jena, type NfpK), equipped with a basic body In Ph 160 with an exchangeable module Ph, LOMO St. Petersburg turntable mounted on a centering holder of our own construction and a Nikon D 70 digital SLR camera. Anisotropic granules were found only in the members of two orders of algae (Euglenales, Euglenophyceae and Chlorococcales, Chlorophyceae). They always showed strong birefringence and differed in both number and size. An important finding concerned thin pellicles in genus Euglena (Euglenales, Euglenophyceae) which exhibited weak birefringence. In genus Pediastrum (Chlorococcales, Chlorophyceae), these granules were found only in living coenobium cells. In contrast, dead coenobium cells contained many granules without birefringence—an important finding. Another important finding included birefringent lamellar structure of the transverse cell wall and weak birefringence of pyrenoids in filamentous algae of genus Spirogyra (Zygnematales, Conjugatophyceae). It was clearly displayed by the negative phase contrast and has not been documented by other methods. This method can also record the very weak birefringence of the frustule of a diatom of genus Pinnularia (Naviculales, Bacillariophyceae), which was further reinforced by the use of quartz compensator—an important finding. Simultaneous use of negative phase contrast and polarization microscopy allowed us to study not only birefringent granules of storage substances in microorganisms, but also the individual lamellae of the cell walls of filamentous algae and very thin frustule walls in diatoms. These can be visualized only by this contrast method, which provides a higher resolution (subjective opinion only) than other methods such as positive phase contrast or relief contrast.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in phytoplankton species composition (frequencies) and densities (cell numbers) in nine North African coastal lakes selected in Morocco (Merja Sidi Bou Rhaba, Zerga and Bokka), Tunisia (Chitane, Ichkeul and Korba lakes) and Egypt (Edku, Burullus and Manzala lakes) were investigated during 1998. The main aim was to provide gase-line information about overall phytoplankton diversity and how phytoplanktoncharacteristics differ between these contrasting aquatic systems.Water samples were collected at approximately three monthly intervals and phytoplankton analysis revealed marked seasonal and spatial differences in the quantitative and qualitative composition of the communities at each site. The Egyptian lakes generally had larger crops (Manzala and Burullus had mean crop densities of more than 104 cells ml–1) but in the western North African sites only Korba and Sidi Bou Rhaba had closely comparable densities. Algae belonging to Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Euglenophyceae were recorded. Taxa representative of all these algal groups occurred in two lakes (Korba and Manzala) but at the other seven sites only some of the groups were present. The Chlorophyceae was the most dominant group in lakes Burullus, Manzala, Korba and Sidi Bou Rhaba whereas Bacillariophyceae were dominant in lakes Zerga, Bokka and Edku. In Ichkeul and acidic Chitane the Dinophyceae and the Cyanophyceae were the dominant groups, respectively. The maximum percentage of Euglenophyceae occurred in Edku Lake but this group was absent in Sidi Bou Rhaba and Ichkeul. Cyanophyceans were present in significant numbers in all investigated lakes except in Ichkeul. A total of fifty-three genera were recorded, 17 of Chlorophyceae, 18 of Bacillariophyceae, 11 of Cyanophyceae, 3 of Chrysophyceae, 2 of Euglenophyceae and 2 of Dinophyceae. The maximum number of species (34) occurred in Burullus Lake and the minimum (6) in Ichkeul Lake. Only one lake (acidic Chitane) possessed species indicative of oligotrophic conditions. The Nile Delta lakes were the most species diverse sites. The phytoplankton communities of the nine North African lakes were composed entirely of cosmopolitan species but with one new species (Cyclotella choctawatcheeana) was recorded for the region. The data presented provide a contemporary account of the levels of algal diversity present in these sites at the end of the 20th century. The relevance of phytoplankton communities to assessment of lake status and future monitoring studies in the region is emphasised.  相似文献

We determined the bacterial community profile in non-axenic cultures of Chlorella (Chlorophyceae, Chlorophyta) isolated from soil. The bacterial composition at the phylum level was different from that of whole soil bacteria, but it was similar to that reported for non-axenic cultures of marine microalgae such as diatoms (Bacillariophyceae, Heterokontophyta). Expected novel bacteria, i.e. those which do not have close relatives among described species, were maintained in the cultures, and these bacteria were chiefly composed of members of the phylum Bacteroidetes. They may have been 'as-yet-uncultured' but in practice unintentionally been cultured in microalgal cultures. They could serve as good bioresources in various fields of biological and ecological studies.  相似文献

We investigated the independent and interactive effects of nutrient enrichment and snail grazing on structuring periphyton communities in a northern temperate lake. Nutrient releasing substrates and grazer enclosures were used to simultaneously manipulate nutrient availability and herbivory. Periphyton was allowed 18 days to accrue before grazers (Elimia livescens = Goniobasis livescens) were introduced.Addition of nitrogen and phosphorus caused a significant increase in biovolume (p < 0.001), whereas grazing had no significant effect on biovolume but resulted in a shift in species composition. Four taxa were largely responsible for the increase in biovolume on the nutrient enriched substrates: Oedogonium sp, Stigeoclonium tenue, Navicula radiosa var. radiosa and Navicula radiosa var. tenella. By the 28th day, nutrient enrichment caused a shift from a community dominated by diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) to a community dominated by green algae (Chlorophyceae). Blue green algae (Myxophyceae) maintained an equal proportion in high and low-nutrient regimes.Grazing had a more pronounced effect on altering community composition on the nutrient enriched substrates than on the unenriched substrates. Grazing caused a decrease in diversity and an increase in dominance by green algae on the nutrient enriched substrates. The relative biovolume of green algae increased from 64% to 93% on grazed substrates, due to the significant increase in relative abundance of Stigeoclonium tenue. This taxon has both prostate basal cells and erect filamentous cells. The ratio of basal: filamentous cells increased from 4.7 to 5.2 with grazing, suggesting that the heretotrichous growth form of Stigeoclonium tenue is adapted to grazing by virtue of the basal cells which are able to adhere to the substratum and resist being grazed.  相似文献

Characteristics of glycolate-oxidizing enzymes in crude extracts of algal species in the Chlorophyta, Chromophyta, Prymnesiophyta, Dinophyta, Cryptophyta, and Rhodophyta were compared by measuring glycolate-dependent O2 consumption and dichlorophenolindophenol (DCPIP) reduction under anaerobic conditions and by checking cyanide sensitivity and the stereospecificity for d - and l -lactate. Glycolate dehydrogenase similar to that found in the Chlorophyceae was found only in the Prasinophyceae, which is phylogenetically close to the Chlorophyceae, and in the Cryptophyta, the phylogenetically enigmatic algae. Glycolate oxidase was found in the Chromophyta except the Bacillariophyceae and in the rhodophyte Porphyridium purpureum (Bory) Drew & Ross. No detectable activity was found in the other rhodophytes, dinoflagellates, or prymnesiophytes. Glycolate dehydrogenase in the Bacillariophyceae was not cyanide-sensitive and had a stereospecificity for l -lactate. Catalase activity was observed at high levels in all algae possessing glycolate oxidase, but was not detected in the Bacillariophyceae, Prasinophyceae, and Cryptophyta, which have glycolate dehydrogenase activity. High levels of d -lactate-dependent DCPIP-reducing activity were observed in the raphidophyte Heterosigma akashiwo (Hada) Hada, a major constituent of red tides on the coast of Japan, and in the Bacillariophyceae, but such activity was not catalyzed by the glycolate-oxidizing enzymes nor NAD-dependent lactate-oxidizing enzymes.  相似文献

The soil algal communities of forested and reforested, limed and unlimed plots were compared in the acid rain impacted Kru sné hory Mountains. The floristic composition of unlimed plots is similar to that found in acid forest soils with a naturally low pH and no effect of the acid rain on these communities can be detected. Chlorophyceae are the only group present in these soils. In limed areas with a higher soil pH, algal diversity is significantly increased while algal densities remain similar. Chlorophyceae, while still the dominant group, are accompanied in these soils by Bacillariophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Eustigmatophyceae and Cyanophyceae. Total vegetation cover and thus light hitting the soil surface seems to be most important in determining the algal biomass.  相似文献

Estimates of planktonic growth kinetics in relation to the thermal environment were made over a two year period in three hot springs and one cold one located in West Bengal, India. A very characteristic feature of the Saubhagya Kund (43–49°C) and Papahara (46–51°C) was the abundance of phytoplankton, always dominated by blue-green algae. This situation changed in the other two springs where zooplankton was an essential component. The determination of the species diversity index indicated that the graph of cumulative species of plankton versus logarithm of individuals was roughly linear in Saubhagya Kund and Papahara, whereas in the other two a logistic curve was the result. The seasonal distribution of Myxophyceae/Phytoplankton was dependant upon the annual phosphorous cycle (P < 0.0001) in all the thermal waters studied. That the population dynamics of diatoms responded inversely to the level of phosphate (P < 0.05) has been clearly manifested in Swetganga (37–46°C). The variation in the silicate content of the water throughout the year has been found responsible for the seasonal succession of diatoms in some of the waters (P < 0.001). The multiple correlation between phosphate, silicate, dissolved oxygen and pH and Myxophyceae/Phytoplankton was significant in the case of Papahara (P < 0.01) and Swetganga (P < 0.05). Similarly, the multiple correlation between these factors and Bacillariophyceae was significant in Saubhagya Kund (P < 0.01). In the non-thermal water Jibatsa Kund (22–39°C), the multiple correlation between these factors and Phytoplankton was, however, not significant (P > 0.05).  相似文献

Blooms of blue-green algae from 51 eutrophic Scandinavian lakes were investigated during the period 1978–1984, to ascertain the occurrence of toxinogenic species. Toxicity assays were performed by intraperitoneal injection of suspensions of freeze-dried algal material in mice. Toxin-producing blue-green algae were found in 30 lakes. They belonged to 11 different species of the six genera Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Gomphosphaeria, Microcystis, Nodularia and Oscillatoria. The presence of toxinogenic strains of blue-green algae seemed quite constant in several of the localities studied. In some lakes, more than one toxic species were found to develop simultaneously. The level of toxicity showed large variation (MLD100, 6 to > 2500 mg/kg), but clinical and pathological changes were quite uniform. The results indicate that water-blooms of toxin-producing blue-green algae, in the geographical area in question, are regionally widespread. In some localities, blooms of blue-green algae are apparently always toxic. Several aspects of the toxic blue-green algae problem are discussed.  相似文献

An electron-dense helix is the most conspicuous structure in the flagellar transition region of members of the algal class Chrysophyceae. This “transitional helix” (TH) lies immediately distal to a partition across the flagellar axoneme which occurs exactly at the level at which the flagellum enters the cell body. The helix surrounds the central axonemal pair and lies at a distance of 10 nm from the 9 peripheral doublets. From the new data presented and a survey of published observations on the structure of the transition region of all the chlorophyll c-containing classes of algae, it is shown that a TH characteristic of the Chrysophyceae, Xanthophyceae and Eustigmatophyceae. The number of TH gyres varies from 3 to 6 in the Xanthophyceae and from 1 to 8 in the Chrysophyceae. In any one species, however, the TH is the same size in both the long flagellum which bears tubular mastigonemes and in the short smooth flagellum, though in some chrysophytes where the short flagellum is vestigial the number is fewer than in the normal flagellum. A TH appears to be absent from the Rhaphidophyceae and zoids of the Bacillariophyceae and Phaeophyceae though the structure of the transition region in these groups otherwise resembles that of the Chrysophyceae, Xanthophyceae and Eustigmatophyceae. The value of transition region variation in determining evolutionary relationships among the chlorophyll c-containing algal classes is assessed against a background of current ideas on their taxonomy and phylogeny. The relevant structural and biochemical features are tabled, and a phylogenetic scheme is presented which appears most logically to interpret these data. It is suggested that the line leading to the Eustigmatophyceae probably diverged from that leading to the strictly heterokont classes Xanthophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Phaeophyceae and Bacillariophyceae before evolution of a girdle lamella in the chloroplast and a photoreceptor apparatus involving a swelling at the proximal end of the short flagellum and an intraplastidial eyespot. The possession of a TH by both the Chrysophyceae and Xanthophyceae adds further support to the concept of their close relationship based on a range of other features. The exceptional absence of a TH from the chrysophycean genera Pedinella and Pseudopedinella reinforces the idea that these taxa are remote from the main chrysophycean line. Absence of a TH from the Phaeophyceae and Bacillariophyceae which otherwise share many important features with the Chrysophyceae and Xanthophyceae is probably a result of loss owing to the functional and morphological specialization of the zoids of these two groups. Transition region structure does not clarify the possible relationships of the Rhaphidophyceae, Prymnesiophyceae, Cryptophyceae or Dinophyceae. The proposed phylogeny supports the idea of a mutually related “heterokont” protist assemblage comprising the Chrysophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Phaeophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and possibly Rhaphidophyceae and the Oomycetes (water moulds) though in the latter the TH is replaced by a dense cylinder with a corrugated wall which may or may not be homologous with it. Structures resembling a TH have been described in a wide variety of other flagellated cells including the prasinophyte Pyraminonas orientalis, one species of the colourless flagellate genus Bicosoeca and the proteromonads Karotomorpha and Proteromonas. Only in the latter genera does homology with a TH seem likely on present evidence, suggesting that flagellates of this type may have evolved from chrysomonad-like ancestors.  相似文献
