Mitotic activity in the cambial zone of 20-year-old Pinus strobus L. trees was determined quantitatively, using mitotic counts from serial tangential sections of sample pieces. Counts from nine cores 1.6 mm in diameter from each sample piece were averaged and expressed as the number of mitoses per core with the sampling error. Estimation of the number of cambial zone cells per core permitted calculation of mitotic indices. In the fourth internode from the ground the first mitoses were observed on April 15 and the last on September 15. The number of mitoses per sample piece was comparable throughout each internode at any one sampling, but the number was higher in internodes within the crown than in those below it. Mitotic index was not appreciably higher within the crown, but it decreased from 3.7 in spring to 2.0 in fall. An internode in the crown sampled May 11–13 showed afternoon peaks in mitotic activity, but an internode below the crown showed no peaks, nor did other internodes sampled later in the season.  相似文献

An experimental population composed of ramets of white spruce clones was studied to determine the influence of different levels of clonal male reproductive investment on clonal male reproductive success, where the male reproductive success of different clones in the population was defined as the proportion of the seed crop sired by each clone. We present a multilocus estimation procedure which provides unbiased estimates of the proportion of seed sired by each parental genotypic class from pollen gamete frequency data, whenever gametic segregation frequencies are known. Significant linear and quadratic components were found for the relationship between the number of male cones produced and the estimated proportion of the seed crop sired. A clone that produced an exceptionally large number of male cones, however, did not have the greatest male reproductive success. In general, the results support an assumption made in theoretical models of selection on mating system modifiers regarding the relationship between male investment and male reproductive success. They also support the hypothesis that male reproductive success in wind-pollinated species continues to increase substantially with increasing male reproductive investment.  相似文献

在构树(Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Vent.)形成层活动周期中,每年7月末以后,未成熟的木质部和韧皮部逐渐减少,成熟的木质部和韧皮部急剧增多。8月初开始分化晚材。进入9月后木质部的形成逐渐停止,而一个半月以后才停止形成韧皮部。淀粉贮量的消长与形成层的活动周期有很强的相关关系。早春形成层恢复活动后,淀粉贮量逐渐减少直至消失。尔后,形成层活动减慢,特别是木质部分化停止后,淀粉又开始积累。当韧皮部分化也停止后,淀粉又消失,直至翌年1月才重新积累,这似乎与两个休眠期的转化有关  相似文献

Mitotic activity in the vascular cambium was determined from nine samples from a single internode in each of four Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) trees. Counts of mitotic nuclei and populations of potentially dividing cells in each sample were used to determine the average mitotic index per core. The sampling error was determined for the average mitotic index per core and the internode as a whole. Significant differences were found between the mitotic indexes of samples within the internodes of three of the trees; however, no differences were observed in the rate of division among trees. A significant correlation was established between the number of cells in the cambial zone and the average mitoses per core per sample.  相似文献

During the annual three-phase growth cycle of white spruce [Picea glauca (Moench) Voss] the vegetative shoot apex changed in anatomical configuration. Relative amounts of DNA, histones, RNA, and proteins were measured in three cytohistological zones and were related to the anatomical changes during ontogeny. An extended period of DNA synthesis (S) and G2 preceded an increase in the number of apical initial cells which were part of the mammillary apex. While DNA and histones were generally synchronous during ontogeny, the ratio of DNA to histone increased on June 20. This loss of histone and subsequent increases in RNA and cytoplasmic proteins preceded the appearance of needle primordia on next year's apex. We propose that induction of the apex to reorganize and form needle primordia occurred when the DNA was in a 2C condition, following the loss of histone on June 20.  相似文献

Salivary secretions injected into the cortex or outer phloem by Adelges piceae (balsam woolly aphid) feeding on Abies grandis induce the production of wood that is in some respects similar to compression wood. Cambial activity was analyzed by examination of serial tangential sections through an annual ring in the xylem produced before infestation occurred and compared with similar sections from a ring produced after infestation. Growth after infestation was characterized by increased periclinal and anticlinal divisions of fusiform initials, increased production of new ray initials from fusiform initials and from anticlinal divisions of existing ray initials, and decline of numerous fusiform initials and termination of many tiers by maturation. This results in increased frequency of ray fusion and separation by decline or intrusion of adjacent fusiform initials. There was a marked increase in size and number of rays and number of parenchyma strands both of which also distinguish aphid-affected wood from compression wood with which it frequently has been compared.  相似文献

The annual rhythm of cambial activity is compared in Proustia cuneifolia and Acacia caven, two typical shrubs of the “matorral” in the semiarid region of central Chile. Proustia, a drought deciduous shrub, shows a typical desert cambial rhythm, highly sensitive to rainfall. The growth activity of this species is limited to the periods of adequate moisture. Acacia is an evergreen whose cambial activity is observed almost throughout the year; it is not synchronous with rainfall. Adaptation in this species seems to consist in developing long roots able to tap underground water. These results indicate that both shrubs, although growing together, have different adaptive strategies to the same xerophytic conditions.  相似文献

4月初,白皮松(Pinus bungeana Zucc.)形成层带细胞开始增大,未成熟的木质部和韧皮部细胞增多,下旬出现成熟的木质部细胞。5月以后,木质部和韧皮部的形成速度加快,6月初进入晚材形成期。8月初停止产生木质部,9月中旬停止产生韧皮部。多糖颗粒的消长与形成层活动有较强的相关性,恢复活动前后颗粒含量持续增长,6月进入晚材形成期才持续减少,至翌年1月初完全消失,3月又重新积累,并迅速达到高峰。淀粉酶同工酶在活动期只有一条酶带,形成层停止产生木质部后出现了3条特异酶带,12月初又出现了2条特异酶带,这5条酶带都一直存在到形成层恢复活动。  相似文献

Circular patches of bark were surgically isolated on the sides of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) trees at breast height at various times during the dormant and growing seasons. Subsequently, samples of wood and attached bark were taken from isolated and control sites to determine the effects of isolation of the bark on cambial activity and xylem and phloem development. In control trees cambial activity and xylem and phloem development occurred normally. Isolation of bark during the dormant season (in November, February, or March) did not prevent initiation of cambial activity and of phloem differentiation in spring but continued normal cambial activity and phloem developmented were prevent. Xylem differentiation was essentially prevented by isolation of tissues during the dormant season. The ultimate effect of isolation of the bark on the cambium, either during the dormant season or during the growing season, was subdivision of all fusiform cambial cells into strands of parenchymatous elements; the ultimate effect on the newly formed phloem was early death of the sieve elements. The most conspicuous effect of isolation of the bark after xylem differentiation had begun was the curtailment of secondary wall formation. Shortening of cells of the cambial region was reflected in the length of the vessel members which differentiated from such cells. These results indicate that normal cambial activity and xylem and phloem development require a supply of currently translocated regulatory substances from the shoots.  相似文献

Flooding results in induction of anaerobic metabolism in many higher plants. As an important component of anaerobic energy production, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity increases markedly in response to flooding in white clover, Trifolium repens. Significant inter-individual variation in flood-induced ADH activity exists in natural populations of T. repens. The genetic basis of this variation was analyzed by offspring-midparent regression of data from 75 greenhouse reared families; the estimated heritability of flood-induced ADH activity was 0.55 (±0.13). Genetic variation in flood-induced ADH activity has pronounced effects on physiological response and flood tolerance in this species. ADH activity is positively correlated with the rate of ethanol production, indicating that observed in vitro activity differences are manifested in in vivo physiological function. T. repens plants with higher ADH activities during flooding have greater flood tolerance (measured as growth rate when flooded/unflooded growth rate). Variation in ADH activity during flooding accounts for more than 79% of the variance in flood tolerance. On the basis of a limited field survey of populations occupying three sites differing in exposure to flooding conditions, individuals from site C, the most frequently flooded site, expressed significantly higher average ADH activity when flooded than individuals from site A, a site with no history of flooding. Since ADH activity levels are not correlated with electrophoretic mobility variation in T. repens, this work supports previous suggestions that regulatory variation in enzyme activity may play a central role in biochemical adaptations to environmental stress.  相似文献
