Attempts to elucidate the physiological basis of cold-resistance during germination led to the investigation of the germination of seeds at low temperature, the effect of pathogenic and parasitic microorganisms being excluded. At the various experimental temperatures (4°, 6°, 8°, 10° and 14°C) it was found that seed samples of different varieties of maize respond to conditions close to the temperature minimum for germination in three quantitatively different ways. Firstly, caryopses germinate considerably later than at higher temperatures, secondly, the kernels will not germinate even after a prolonged period, without losing their viability and, thirdly, in some of the caryopses the embryos perish. The lower the temperature used the greater the inhibition of germination and the higher the mortality of the embryos. The increase in mortality with decreasing temperature indicates that the mortality is primarily due to the actual effect of the low temperature. Samples of seeds displayed quantitative difference in the above mentioned response. Only when fungicide-treated seed material was used for the cold-resistance experiments was a significant relationship found to exist between this property and the general germinating capacity or mortality at the same low temperature.  相似文献

Abstract

The germination percentage of Aegilops geniculata Roth caryopses was studied on four Italian populations (Pisa, Manfredonia, Catania and Simbirizzi). Observation of the germination trend was carried out at constant temperatures of 10°, 20° and 30°C, from maturation up to 60 days after harvesting. Spike, spikelet and caryopsis phenotypic characteristics were also studied. The populations of Pisa, Manfredonia and Simbirizzi presented two different types of caryopses: yellow caryopses - larger, heavier and composing roughly 60% of total—and brown caryopses—smaller and lighter in weight. The Catania population formed an exception in that brown caryopses were virtually absent (5%). This Sicilian accession also showed the largest spikelet size.

Yellow caryopses germinated more rapidly than the dark ones, which were shown to be endowed with longer relative dormancy, above all at 10° and 30° C. Such a phenomenon allows the two types of caryopses to have a different germination ecology, thus providing A. geniculata with a broader choice of germination opportunities and consequently favouring spread and survival of the species.  相似文献

Callophyllis variegata (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta) is an edible species used in salads and soups in Asian countries. Research into its early stages and growth is required to develop cultivation. This study evaluated the effect of temperature and photoperiod on viability and germination in the laboratory and, subsequently, growth in the sea. Carpospores collected during different seasons from the localities of Chauman (41°47′S) and Puñihuil (41°55′S), in southern Chile, were grown in Provasoli medium at 10 and 15 °C. After 7 days, viability was higher in the photoperiod of 16:08 h (light/darkness) and 10 °C, while germination was higher at 15 °C in the same photoperiod. Viability was over 65 % in both localities in winter and spring, and germination was 74.6 and 87.5 %, respectively. Daily growth rates in the laboratory fluctuated between 2 and 10 %. Tetrasporophytic juveniles settled on cotton nets were grown on long lines at 3.5 m deep in the sea for 8 months. Growth and density of fronds were evaluated monthly. Epiphytic seaweeds such as Ulva sp. and Polysiphonia sp. were observed on the nets. C. variegata fronds grew up to approximately 8 cm, and the final density was between 10 and 40 ind/10 cm. A preliminary evaluation of culture costs is also presented.  相似文献

Changes in soluble sugar content in individual parts (embryo, endosperm and pericarp) of maize caryopses exposed to the influence of 24°, 10° and 6° were studied. At the same time the eluates from sand in which the seeds were planted and exposed for various periods were analysed by paper chromatography. It was found that the lower was the temperature of exposure the greater were the amounts of sucrose, glucose, raffinose and other sugars diffused from the caryopses into the medium before the start of germination. The exosmose course and the changes in sugar content in kernel tissues proved that the hydrolysis of storage polysaccharides is not inhibited by low temperatures but that under such conditions the use of products of hydrolysis for the growth of the embryo is inhibited. It is concluded that not only surface parts of endosperm but also the embryo participates in exosmose. The relatively high sugar exosmose found from seeds germinated at low temperatures explains the well-known interaction of pathogenic and parasitic microorganism in cold resistance during emergence.  相似文献

The germination of seeds of three species of forage grasses, Lolium perenne, Festuca pratensis and Dactylis glomerata, was studied after storage for 3–5 years under five different storage conditions: in aluminium foil packets at —25°C, 0°C and laboratory temperature (c. 18°C), and in manilla paper packets at 0°C and laboratory temperature. With Lolium perenne and Festuca pratensis high germination values at 3 and 7 days were obtained from seed stored at — 25 °C and 0°C in foil packets (5% moisture), but at laboratory temperatures, seed from foil packets gave lower germination values than those from manilla paper packets. At all three temperatures Dactylis glomerata germination after 7 and 14 days was higher in seed stored in foil than in manilla packages. With all three species stored in manilla packets, germination was higher after laboratory than cold storage.  相似文献

Abstract

The geomagnetic field effect hypothesis and the variability among replications in germination and growth tests in Triticum. – During previous eperiments on germination and growth of Triticum, we have often found many cases of heteroscedasticity and of statistically significant differences among contemporary replications (i.e. germinators). In such experiments all the caryopses were oriented in the same way inside the germinators, whilst the germinators were randomly set inside the thermostats: therefore the seeds of different germinators might result differently oriented. Some researchers report that seeds differently oriented according to the lines of force of the geomagnetic field, may respond with different germination, growth rates and growth directions of shoots and roots (magnetotropism). The present investigation was designed to ascertain if these effects might be responsible of the variability among the contemporary replications. The different caryopses orientation within laboratory geomagnetic field, does not give evidence of any effect on germination, growth rate and direction. The caryopses show no germination sensibility neither related to different age, light and temperature conditions, neither to different cultivars, neither to varying orientation from the geomagnetic North every 15° and to varying time of ? preorientation ? in dry conditions. Differences between the variability of randomly and North oriented subsamples are not observed. No statistically significant differences are observed among shoots and roots lenghts of seedlings from differently oriented caryopses neither in different environmental conditions, nor as function of the orientation (24 angles of 15°), nor after different preorientations, nor after repeating the test on 608 subsamples (12.000 seedlings). Therefore the variability among contemporary replications is not imputable to the geomagnetic field. The variability and the distributions structure analysis suggest that both the heteroscedasticity and the significant differences among the replications may be due to an interaction among the caryopses inside the germinators through the substrate. This is probably related to the cultivar characteristics. We emphasize that an accurate evaluation of the variability is particularly necessary in germination and growth tests.  相似文献

Psammochloa villosa (Trin.) Bor. (Poaceae), is distributed primarily in moving sand dunes of the Ordos Plateau, China. Freshly harvested caryopses (seeds) are in non-deep physiological dormancy (non-deep PD). Germination is slow and low and only over a narrow temperature range. A treatment of four weeks cold stratification at 3 to 5 °C in darkness was required to break non-deep PD, allowing germination to reach high percentages at higher temperatures and without light requirement. Rate and percentages of germination were increased by scarifying the caryopsis coat and by artificial removal of different proportions of the endosperm. However, seedling dry weight and increases in root and shoot lengths, were significantly influenced by the proportion of the endosperm that remained on the caryopses. Higher percentages of seedling emergence were obtained from the shallowly buried caryopses, ranging from 0.5–2.0 cm, and the depth of the caryopses in the sand affected the time of germination. The deeper the caryopses were buried, the more that remained ungerminated and in enforced dormancy. The caryopses germinated when the upper sand layer was removed and buried caryopses were at a suitable sand depth for germination, or when the sand was aerated. In natural habitats, germinated seedlings may be wholly exposed to the air by sand erosion and thus be exposed to drought stress. However, young seedlings have the ability to tolerate desiccation and to recover after rehydration. Root length at the `point of no return' is 4 mm.  相似文献

Avena fatua L. florets (caryopses enclosed by lemma and palea) were partially dormant at 10–20 °C and did not germinate at temperatures outside this range. After-ripening florets at 25 °C for 12 weeks completely removed dormancy. Caryopses (florets without lemma and palea) were able to germinate totally at 20 °C. Karrikinolide (KAR1) and gibberellic acid (GA3) applied at 10–25 °C partially or markedly induced germination of dormant florets and caryopses, respectively. Both florets and caryopses were more sensitive to KAR1 than to GA3. To obtain similar effects, 1,000 to 10,000 times lower concentrations of KAR1 than GA3 were required. After-ripening with time gradually increased sensitivity of caryopses to these regulators. Likewise, after-ripened, non-dormant caryopses were sensitive to KAR1 and GA3. Inhibitors of gibberellin biosynthesis, ancymidol, paclobutrazol and flurprimidol inhibited the effect of KAR1. This inhibition was reversed by GA3. Caryopses pre-incubated in water with ancymidol or paclobutrazol in the presence or absence of KAR1 germinated completely but with different rates after transfer to GA3. KAR1 probably requires gibberellin biosynthesis to stimulate germination of dormant Avena fatua L. caryopses. Both KAR1 and GA3 increased α-amylase, β-amylase and dehydrogenases activities during imbibition before visible germination occurred.  相似文献

In experiments conducted under controlled conditions. KNO3 (50 or 100 m M ) promoted germination of a dormant strain (AN 474) of Avena fatua when either one or two holes were pierced in the lower (adaxial) surface of the caryopsis in contact with the nitrate solution. Germination was increased by increasing either the KNO3 concentration or the number of holes in the seed coat. The germination response induced by the application of water to a hole pierced in the upper surface of the caryopsis was. increased by pre-treatment of the intact caryopsis with KNO3. Treatment with either 50 or 100 m M KNO3 caused a transient reduction in embryo water content of intact cary-opses, but increased the nitrate and amino- N content of pierced caryopses prior to germination. Supplying a 100 m M solution of KNO3 to pierced caryopses reduced the total water potential and osmotic potential of the embryo, and increased its pressure potential by the same amount as an equimolar solution of KC1; however, while both treatments promoted germination, the KNO3 induced more rapid germination than the KCI. Both treatments also increased the K+ content of the embryo, the KNO3 again having the greater effect. These results are consistent with the hypothesis, based on our previous investigations, that KNO3 promotes germination of dormant caryopses by accumulating in the embryo where it acts osmotically to increase water uptake. It is also postulated, that, in contrast to KCI, KNG3 may combine an osmotic effect on water uptake with a nutritional effect on protein synthesis.  相似文献

Dormant, intact Avena fatua L. (wild oat) seeds germinate poorly at 20 °C. Removing the hulls slightly increased germination. Treatment with smoke solutions increased the germination of both intact seeds and caryopses. Exogenous GA3, alone or in the presence of smoke solution, increased the germination of caryopses, while ACC shows a tendency to increase germination of caryopses only when applied in combination with smoke solution. Results suggest that GA3 and ethylene, but not smoke solutions, are involved in the regulation of α-amylase activity during germination. However, the participation of smoke solutions in the control of ACC oxidase activity cannot be excluded.  相似文献

The widely distributed long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas) has been reported off the Chilean coast, from Iquique (20°12′S) south to Navarino Island (55°15′S; 67°30′W), but little is known about its biology or ecology in the region. Here, we report on the prey of this species, identified by stomach content analyses from animals stranded on Holget Islets, Beagle Channel, southern Chile in August 2006. The stomachs of seven individuals (six females and one male) contained cephalopod remains. The prey composition found in these southern Chilean pilot whales was similar to that described in other parts of the world and the Southern Ocean. This is the first report on the feeding habits of this species from Chile.  相似文献

Germination characteristics of Heteropogon contortus were investigated in germination cabinets and in the glasshouse using soil trays. Under the former a dual inhibitory system appeared to operate. On the one hand naked caryopses from seeds which were less than 4 months of age were inhibited from germination by a process apparently analogous to epicotyl dormancy. This could readily be broken by applying 1% gibberellic acid and partly broken by repeated wetting and drying. On the other hand between 4 and 12 months, naked caryopses germinated more readily than intact seeds (caryopsis plus glumes, lemmas, etc.). However, the dormancy factor apparently associated with these structures could not be detected when seed was germinated in soil in the glasshouse and it appeared that they are a necessary protection for the caryopsis under field conditions. The optimal temperature for germination was between 30 and 35°C constant. Alternating diurnal temperatures of less than this appeared to cause reduced germination, and no high-temperature stimulation was observed. Germination was not directly promoted by the passage of a normal grass fire.  相似文献

Induction of vivipary in Avena fatua   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An investigation was conducted under controlled conditions to determine whether treatments designed to maximize the availability of water during seed development could induce viviparous germination in wild oats ( Avena fatua L.). Panicles of three genetic lines, which differed in their degree of dormancy, were kept in darkness at ca 100% RH and 20±1°C and were either supplied with water through the cut end of the rachis or left attached to the plant which was exposed to light. In the non-dormant line, germination of both primary and secondary caryopses on excised panicles increased with their stage of development when treated, i.e., 0, 5 and 10 days after anthesis. Germination of primary caryopses varied between 70 and 80% and was similar on both isolated and attached panicles treated at 10 and 5 days after anthesis, respectively. The percentage germination was considerably lower in all treatments of the two dormant lines and was inversely related to the genetically determined difference in their degree of dormancy. In these dormant lines germination was significantly lower on the intact plant than on the detached panicles. Water potential measurements suggested that this difference may be due partly to the transpiration-induced negative ψxyin the stem which may contribute to the inhibition of embryo growth and thus to the prevention of viparous germination.  相似文献

HODGSON  G. L. 《Annals of botany》1970,34(2):365-381
The effects of temperature on the growth and development ofLemna minor in the open have been studied in the east of Scotlandby means of four water baths constructed to maintain constantwater temperatures of 12.5, 17.5, 22.5, and 27.5 °C whensubjected to natural insolation. Experiments were conductedat weekly intervals between August and November in 1958 andMay and July in 1959. At the beginning of every experiment, for all temperature treatments, 134 fronds were placed in eachof six containers. From the initial and final samples, the weightsof roots and fronds together with frond (leaf) area were measured,so that weekly values for net assimilation rate, leaf-area ratio, and relative growth-rate could be calculated. Daily solar radiationwas recorded by means of bimetallic radiation recorder. In 1958 linear regressions of a satisfactory fit were obtainedwhen the data for net assimilation rate, leaf-area ratio, andrelative growth-rate were calculated on the logarithms of theradiation for each temperature. Since radiation remained relativelyconstant in 1959 it was not possible to evaluate very reliablythe effects of radiation on the growth parameters but only occasionally, notably for the final leaf-area ratio (12.5 °C) were thelines for 1958 and 1959 significantly different. Single lineswere fitted to the points for both years. In all the regressions, apart from that for final leaf-area ratio (12.5°C) the proportionof the variation accounted for ranged from 87 to 97 per cent. The results showed that the net assimilation rate was positivelylinked with radiation and was optimal at 17.5 °C, thoughthe rise from 12.5 to 17.5 °C was not significant. At thehigher temperatures (22.5 and 27.5 °C) there was a significantnegative effect of temperature on the net assimilation rate. The leaf-area ratio and relative growth-rate were positivelydependent on radiation and reached the highest values at thehighest temperatures. The maximum growth-rate recorded amountedto no less than 0.39 g.g–1 day–1. The results are discussed in relation to those for other aquaticand terrestrial plants.  相似文献

Germination rate and total germination of Puccinia graminis uredospores were directly related to pustule age and duration between spore collections. Partial drying of the spores enhanced germination rate; keeping them for 18 h at 100% r.h. reduced both rate and total germination. Spores germinated in polystyrene dishes between 4 and 29 °C and optimally between 15 and 23 °C Light (3 cal/cm2/h) had little effect on germination on moist surfaces but inhibited germination on the leaf. In Hybrid 229/8 wheat this effect was more pronounced than in var. Little Club. The number of primary infections increased linearly with duration of surface wetness with a narrow temperature optimum at 23.5 °C. Two phases of infection could be distinguished: germination (requiring darkness and capable of taking place over a wide temperature range) and penetration (requiring light and slightly higher temperature than for germination). Stomatal closure caused by subjecting the plants to water stress led to proporational reductions in infection. The results are discussed in relation to dew formation.  相似文献

The absence of the larval Anisakis simplex s. l. in samples from central Chile but heavy infections in fish from southern localities suggest the existence of two stocks of Strangomera bentincki, one closely associated with the central coast of Chile (landing port San Antonio and Talcahuano, c. 33° 30′ S–36° 40′ S) and the other associated with southern Chile (landing port Puerto Montt, c. 41° 30′ S). Results confirm the usefulness of metazoan parasites, like A. simplex s. l. as biological markers.  相似文献

Invasion of alien plant species (IAS) represents a serious environmental problem, particularly in Europe, where it mainly pertains to urban areas. Seed germination traits contribute to clarification of invasion dynamics. The objective of this research was to analyze how different light conditions (i.e., 12-hr light/12-hr darkness and continuous darkness) and temperature regimes (i.e., 15/6°C, 20/10°C and 30/20°C) trigger seed germination of Ailanthus altissima (AA), Phytolacca americana (PA) and Robinia pseudoacacia (RP). The relationship between seed germination and seed morphometric traits was also analyzed. Our findings highlight that temperature rather than light was the main environmental factor affecting germination. RP germinated at all tested temperatures, whereas at 15/6°C seeds of AA and PA showed physiological dormancy. RP had a higher germination capacity at a lower temperature, unlike AA and PA, which performed better at the highest temperatures. Light had a minor role in seed germination of the three species. Light promoted germination only for seeds of PA, and final germination percentage was 1.5-fold higher in light than in continuous darkness. Seed morphometric traits (thickness [T], area [A] and volume [V]) had a significant role in explaining germination trait variations. The results highlight the importance of increasing our knowledge on seed germination requirements to predict future invasiveness trends. The increase in global temperature could further advantage AA and PA in terms of germinated seeds, as well as RP by enhancing the germination velocity, therefore compensating for a lower germination percentage of this species at the highest temperatures.  相似文献

Nonstructural carbohydrates in dormant and afterripened wild oat caryopses   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nonstructural carbohydrates were determined in both embryo and endosperm of dormant (nongerminating) and afterripened (germinating) intact caryopses of wild oat ( Avena fatua L.). No changes in endosperm starch or soluble sugar were observed at the onset of germination (18 h). No changes in glucose, fructose, sucrose or starch within dormant or afterripened embryos correlated with onset of visual germination. In afterripened embryos, depletion of raffinose (18 h), stachyose (18 h) and galactose (24 h) was correlated with germination. In contrast, raffinose-family oligosaccharide levels in dormant embryos remained constant for 7 days following imbibition. Germination of isolated dormant embryos on 88 m M galactose-containing media was accompanied by decreased endogenous levels of raffinose and stachyose. Isolated embryos from dormant caryopses incorporated 14C from 14C-fructose into both raffinose and stachyose during 24 h of imbibition. In contrast, no 14C incorporation into stachyose was observed in embryos from afterripened caryopses. No 14C incorporation into raffinose was observed at 18 and 24 h. When in vitro activities of α galactosidase were measured, no temporal differences between dormant or afterripened caryopses were detected in either embryo or endosperm tissue. Although the mechanism associated with differences in utilization of raffinose and stachyose is yet unidentified, alterations in raffinose-family oligosaccharide metabolism in the embryo appear to be a unique prerequisite for afterripening-induced germination.  相似文献
