Asellus aquaticus, a sexually dimorphic isopod crustacean, has no morphologically distinguishable sex chromosome pair. In 25% of the males from a natural population the fluorochrome chromomycin A3 revealed a pair of metacentric chromosomes that was heteromorphic for two heterochromatic areas. One chromosome had a fluorescent band in each of the two arms, whereas the other chromosome lacked both bands. Chromosomal analysis was performed on 50 sibships produced by known parents. The heterochromosome was inherited only by the male offspring of males bearing it. Its distribution led us to postulate the existence of an incipient differentiating sex chromosome pair in the A. aquaticus population.This paper is dedicated to Prof. Guiseppe Montalenti on the occasion of his 80th birthday.  相似文献

Sex-ratio drive is a particular case of meiotic drive, described in several Drosophila species, that causes males bearing driving X chromosome to produce a large excess of females in their progeny. In Drosophila simulans, driving X chromosomes and resistance factors located on the Y chromosome and on the autosomes have been previously reported. In this paper, we report the study of the dynamics of sex-ratio factors in experimental populations. We followed the evolution in frequency of driving X chromosomes in the absence of resistance factors and the evolution of resistance factors in the presence of driving X chromosomes. The driving X chromosome was lost, contrarily to theoretical expectations that predict its rapid invasion. Autosomal resistances increased in frequency, and resistant Y chromosomes invaded the population very quickly, as predicted by theoretical models. Fitness measurements showed that the loss of the driving X chromosome was due to a strong deleterious effect that was expressed only when distorting males were in competition with standard males. However, the spread of autosomal resistances reduced this deleterious effect. Implications for the maintenance of polymorphism in natural populations are discussed.  相似文献

Chromosome studies in six wild-caught specimens of Cebus apella xanthosternos showed a distinctive chromosome pair number 11 that made it possible to distinguish this subspecies from other Cebus apella. The characteristic chromosome pair had intercalar heterochromatin unlike the “standard” chromosome type of Cebus apella and other species of the same genus, in which this chromosome pair shows a large, terminal, heterochromatic block. A comparison at the chromosomal level between different Cebus apella populations suggests that chromosome 11 in Cebus apella xanthosternos is a derived chromosome that has probably become fixed in this subspecies, either by selection or by drift in a small isolated population.  相似文献

Deficiency mapping with Y autosome translocations has shown that the Y chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster carries genes that are essential to male fertility. While the qualitative behavior of these lesions provides important insight into the physiological importance of the Y chromosome, quantitative variation in effects on male fertility among extant Y chromosomes in natural populations may have a significant effect on the evolution of the Y chromosome. Here a series of 36 Y chromosome replacement lines were tested in two ways designed to detect subtle variation in effects on male fertility and total male fitness. The first test involved crossing males from the 36 lines to an excess of females in an attempt to measure differences in male mating success (virility) and male fecundity. The second test challenged males bearing each of the 36 Y chromosomes to competition in populations with males bearing a standard, phenotypically marked (BsY) chromosome. These tests indicated that the Y chromosome lines did not differ significantly in either male fertility or total fitness, but that interactions with autosomes approached significance. A deterministic population genetic model was developed allowing Y autosome interaction in fertility, and it is shown that, consistent with the experimental observations, this model cannot protect Y-linked polymorphism.  相似文献

A study of the pollen tube pathway in Lilium leucanthum var. centifolium and in L. regale reveals that the entire pathway from stigma to ovule is lined with cytologically unique stigmatoid cells. Assays for chemotropic activity of tissues and exudates along the pathway of pollinated or unpollinated pistils showed that onset of chemotropic activity progressed basipetally (and, when pollinated, in advance of the pollen tubes), commencing at the stigma 3-5 days before anthesis and appearing in the ovules 1-2 days after anthesis. Activity persists about 10 days in ovules of pollinated pistils and for 14-16 days in ovules of non-pollinated pistils. Attempts to localize the source of the chemotropic factor showed that gynoecial tissues bearing stigmatoid cells are chemo-tropically active while slices of style or ovary wall lacking stigmatoid cells are inactive. When ovules were sliced transversely and the micropylar and chalazal halves assayed, only the micropylar half showed activity. We suggest that the ovules and the stigmatoid tissue along the pollen tube pathway are the sources of the chemotropic factor responsible for the directional growth of the pollen tube.  相似文献

The evolutionary pathway between hermaphroditism and dioecy (females and males in a single population) draws widespread interests, and androdioecy (bisexuals and males in a single population) is rarely achieved as an intermediate state between the two breeding systems. Flower bud differentiations in the pistils of hermaphrodites and the pistillodes of males in androdioecious Tapiscia sinensis Oliv. are investigated by routine paraffin section technology, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. A phylogenetic approach is used to analyze the origin of androdioecy. In T. sinensis, hermaphroditic flowers (HF) and male flowers (MF) experienced a similar development pattern in early flower bud differentiation, including the initiation of tepals and stamens. However, the carpel differentiation of MF and HF proceed in different patterns. In HF, the central zone bulges out and produces a ring meristem on which two to three carpel primordia emerge, which eventually developed into a normal pistil with a stigma, a style, and an ovary. However, in most MF, vestigial pistils are stem‐like (type I), and very few have an empty ovary (type II) or a sterile ovule (type III). Moreover, the evolution of sexual systems within the Huerteales indicates that hermaphroditism is the primitive character of T. sinensis. Tapiscia sinensis shows different degrees of reduction between male flowers and bisexual ones in the evolution to dioecy. Functional androdioecy originated from a hermaphroditic ancestor in T. sinensis and, as an intermediate sexual system, involves evolution from hermaphrodites to dioecy.  相似文献

In a normal wheat (Triticum ssp.L.) spike, one floret carries only one pistil that will further develop into one grain after fertilization. The cultivated common wheat (T. aestivum L.) mutation line Three Pistils (TP) carried three pistils in a floret. Although one or two of the pistils died out before seed set in some florets, there were exist many florets that set three seeds. Normally, it was observed that there were one to three seeds in different florets of the same spike. Therefore, this mutation trait could raise considerably the number of grains per spike. The weight of 100 grains in three seeds set florets was lower than that of in one seed set florets. But three seeds set florets were significantly to surpass the one seed set florets in grain(s) weight per floret. Based on these results, the three pistils trait was suggested to be an interesting germplasm resource. Localisation of the gene controlling the three pistils trait was carried out by the method of crossing TP with the Chinese Spring disomic substitutions. F2 population segregation analysis revealed that only the 5B F2 population did not show homogeneity to control population. chi2-test analysis indicated that 5B F2 population, and only this population, was deviated from the Mendelian segregation ratio (3:1). As a conclusion, the gene for three pistils trait was located on chromosome 5B. According to the Recommended rules for gene symbolization in wheat, the name of the dominant gene for three pistils trait in the line TP was suggested as Pis1.  相似文献

The present study employed basic and molecular cytogenetic methods to characterize three populations of Parauchenipterus galeatus from the basins of the Paraná and São Francisco Rivers, and a region of connection between the two basins. Although the diploid number was equal to 58 chromosomes, variations in karyotype formula were detected among the populations. B chromosomes were detected only in the population from the São Francisco River. Heterochromatin was located in the terminal position in almost all the chromosomes and in the pericentromeric position in some acrocentric chromosomes in the three populations. A single nucleolus organizer region was detected by silver nitrate and 18S rDNA‐fluorescent in situ hybridization in the short arm of one subtelocentric pair in the three populations, varying only in the chromosome pair bearing this site. The 5S rDNA sites were located in two submetacentric chromosome pairs in the three populations, varying only in the chromosome pairs bearing these sequences. Classic and molecular chromosome markers, along with the context of the natural history of the formation of hydrographic basins, ecological aspects, and the geographic isolation of populations between hydrographic basins and within the same basin, were important contributions to the discussion on possible biogeographic relations among the populations of Parauchenipterus galeatus. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 648–656.  相似文献

Intragenomic conflict has the potential to cause widespread changes in patterns of genetic diversity and genome evolution. In this study, we investigate the consequences of sex‐ratio (SR) drive on the population genetic patterns of the X‐chromosome in Drosophila neotestacea. An SR X‐chromosome prevents the maturation of Y‐bearing sperm during male spermatogenesis and thus is transmitted to ~100% of the offspring, nearly all of which are daughters. Selection on the rest of the genome to suppress SR can be strong, and the resulting conflict over the offspring sex ratio can result in the accumulation of multiple loci on the X‐chromosome that are necessary for the expression of drive. We surveyed variation at 12 random X‐linked microsatellites across 16 populations of D. neotestacea that range in SR frequency from 0% to 30%. First, every locus was differentiated between SR and wild‐type chromosomes, and this drives genetic structure at the X‐chromosome. Once the association with SR is accounted for, the patterns of differentiation among populations are similar to the autosomes. Second, within wild‐type chromosomes, the relative heterozygosity is reduced in populations with an increased prevalence of drive, and the heterozygosity of SR chromosomes is higher than expected based on its prevalence. The combination of the relatively high prevalence of SR drive and the structuring of polymorphism between the SR and wild‐type chromosomes suggests that genetic conflict because of SR drive has had significant consequences on the patterns of X‐linked polymorphism and thus also probably affects the tempo of X‐chromosome evolution in D. neotestacea.  相似文献

The effects of genotype, pollen or growth regulator-pretreatment of pistils, developmental stage of the ovule (embryo sac) and culture media on induction of gynogenesis, and subsequent plantlet regeneration in vitro were assessed in interspecific Gossypium barbadense × G. hirsutum cotton hybrids. Gynogenesis occurred in all genotypes used when the pistils had been pre-treated with pollen from Hibiscus cannabinus and ovaries were harvested 5 or 10 days after anthesis. The use of culture media, SH and MS, showed no significant differences in responding ovules, embryogenic ovules or embryo germination frequency. Recovered progeny were characterized cytogenetically and microscopically to help documenting their reproductive basis. Root tip chromosome counts of 17 plants established from ovule culture revealed that chromosome numbers ranged from 27 to 44. Although the reproductive mechanisms need to be characterized more extensively by cytological and molecular means, the observations suggest that gynogenesis in cotton involves some unusual reproductive events. Aneuploids could be useful for functional genomic characterization of genome shock, deletion mapping, and germplasm introgression.  相似文献

在甘蓝型油菜与诸葛菜以及芥菜型油菜与诸葛菜属间杂交后代中分别发现1个和3个不育材料,经杂交和多代近交育成了相应的甘蓝型油菜不育系。通过对核不育系体细胞鉴定表明,所有新发现的不育系染色体数为38,均已恢复到甘蓝型油菜。这些不育系绝大部分花粉母细胞(PMC)在中期Ⅰ、后期Ⅰ和后期Ⅱ 3个时期染色体行为表现正常,但不同时期的PMC均会出现一定比例的异常现象,主要表现为染色体落后或染色体桥等。这些不育系属于单核败育型,不育株与可育株的花器形态差异明显,不育系还存在不同程度的死蕾等特点。通过对花器生长过程的研究,发现不育株雌蕊生长随雄蕊败育进程逐渐加快,而可育株雌蕊生长则存在两个生长缓慢阶段。此外,文章还讨论了这些不育系的应用前景。  相似文献

The T-007 second chromosome, which was isolated from a natural population of Drosophila melanogaster in south Texas in 1970, is known to show, when made heterozygous in males with a standard cn bw second chromosome, a transmission frequency (k) of 0.35—much lower than the theoretically expected 0.5. Natural populations of this species in Texas contain second chromosomes that, against the standard cn bw genetic background, are associated with distorted transmission frequencies comparable to that of the T-007 chromosome. In order to explain how such chromosomes can persist in natural populations in nontrivial frequencies, it has been postulated that, although such chromosomes show reduced k values when tested under the genetic background of a laboratory stock such as cn bw, they may show, on the average, k values larger than 0.5 under natural genetic backgrounds. If this were true, the frequency of chromosomes of the T-007 type (T chromosomes) should be higher in male than in female gametes under natural genetic backgrounds. The present study was conducted to examine this possibility. The results clearly showed that the frequency of such chromosomes was much higher among male than among female gametes, and that the transmission frequency of this type of chromosome was higher than 0.5 under natural genetic backgrounds. These results suggest that T chromosomes behave like Segregation Distorter (SD) chromosomes in natural populations of this species in Texas. A possible relationship between T-007 and SD chromosomes is suggested.  相似文献

The sex‐ratio X‐chromosome (SR) is a selfish chromosome that promotes its own transmission to the next generation by destroying Y‐bearing sperm in the testes of carrier males. In some natural populations of the fly Drosophila neotestacea, up to 30% of the X‐chromosomes are SR chromosomes. To investigate the molecular evolutionary history and consequences of SR, we sequenced SR and standard (ST) males at 11 X‐linked loci that span the ST X‐chromosome and at seven arbitrarily chosen autosomal loci from a sample of D. neotestacea males from throughout the species range. We found that the evolutionary relationship between ST and SR varies among individual markers, but genetic differentiation between SR and ST is chromosome‐wide and likely due to large chromosomal inversions that suppress recombination. However, SR does not consist of a single multilocus haplotype: we find evidence for gene flow between ST and SR at every locus assayed. Furthermore, we do not find long‐distance linkage disequilibrium within SR chromosomes, suggesting that recombination occurs in females homozygous for SR. Finally, polymorphism on SR is reduced compared to that on ST, and loci displaying signatures of selection on ST do not show similar patterns on SR. Thus, even if selection is less effective on SR, our results suggest that gene flow with ST and recombination between SR chromosomes may prevent the accumulation of deleterious mutations and allow its long‐term persistence at relatively high frequencies.  相似文献

The numbers of microgametophytes in the stigmas of the outcrossing Phlox drummondii were determined in 19 natural populations. Microgametophyte numbers per stigma ranged from 0 to over 40 in each population. The number of flowers per plant, distance to the nearest-neighbor, and number of plants within 1 m of the focal plants explained about 23% of the variation in microgametophyte numbers within 2 of the populations. The mean number per stigma across all populations was 14.34; and the mean number per population varied from 7.77 to 19.52. Given that there are 3 ovules per flower, there was an average of 4.73 microgametophytes per ovule. Sixty-nine percent of all pistils contained more than 3 microgametophytes, thereby presenting an opportunity for intergametophytic competition.  相似文献

A biosystematic study of Calycadenia ciliosa resulted in the recognition of five homoploid (n = 6) chromosome races. The cytogenetic evidence indicates that each of these races is differentiated from its nearest relative by a single reciprocal chromosome translocation, although at one point in the evolutionary history a pericentric inversion may have been a concurrent cytological event. The data also show that the chromosome phylogeny includes two instances of redundant translocation. Mean pollen stainabilities of interracial hybrids range from 16–80%. In a survey of four natural populations 30–60% of the individuals sampled were found to be structurally heterozygous for reciprocal chromosome translocations. Pericentric inversion heterozygosity was also detected in one population. Another population contained morphologically indistinguishable individuals separated by as little as 120 m that were differentiated by a minimum of four chromosome translocations. These observations were compared with similar instances in other species in an effort to determine their significance in the process of plant evolution.  相似文献

The sex-ratio trait described in several Drosophila species is a type of naturally occurring X-linked meiotic drive that causes males bearing a sex-ratio X chromosome to produce progenies with a large excess of females. We have previously reported the occurrence of sex-ratio X chromosomes in Drosophila simulans. In this species, because of the co-occurrence of drive suppressors, the natural populations and the derived laboratory strains show an equal sex-ratio even when sex-ratio X chromosomes are present at a high frequency. The presence of sex-ratio X chromosomes is established via crosses with a standard strain that is devoid of drive suppressors. In this article, we show first that the sex-ratio trait in D. simulans results from the action of several X-linked loci. Second we describe drive suppressors on each major autosome as well as on the Y chromosome. The Y-linked factors suppress the drive partially whereas the autosomal suppression can be complete.  相似文献

Summary We have previously described gene introgression from the wild nightshade Solanum lycopersicoides into tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) through the use of either diploid or sesquidiploid hybrids (the latter consisting of two genomes of L. esculentum and one genome of S. lycopersicoides). Both types of intergeneric hybrids display pollen sterility, but workable ovule fertility. Unilateral incompatibility prevents their direct hybridization with staminate L. esculentum. Pollen of a self-compattible form of the related wild species L. pennellii is compatible with pistils of L. esculentum x S. lycopersicoides hybrids. This trait was backcrossed from L. pennellii to L. esculentum in order to develop bridging lines that could be used to obtain progeny from the intergeneric hybrids and to study the inheritance of bridging ability. In progeny of L. esculentum x S. lycopersicoides hybrids pollinated with L. pennellii-derived bridging lines, preferential transmission of L. pennellii alleles was observed for certain isozyme and RFLP markers on chromosomes 1, 6 and 10. The skewed segregations suggest linkage to three major pollen-expressed compatibility loci. This was confirmed by observations of pollen tube growth, which indicated that compatibility with pistils of the diploid intergeneric hybrid occurred only in bridging lines at least heterozygous for the L. pennellii markers on chromosomes 1, 6 and 10. Compatibility with the sesquidiploid hybrid required only the chromosome 1 and 6 loci, indicating an apparent effect of gene dosage on expression of incompatibility in the pistil. In an F2 L. esculentum x L. pennellii population, preferential transmission of L. pennellii alleles was observed for the same markers on chromosomes 1 and 10, as well as other markers on chromosomes 3, 11, and 12, but not 6. The chromosome 1 pollen compatibility locus maps to or near the S-locus, which determines S-allele specificity. The results are discussed in relation to existing genetic models for unilateral incompatibility, including the possible involvement of the S-locus.  相似文献

A field vole (Microtus agrestis) population characterized by unique mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y chromosome markers occurs in southwest Sweden. A contact zone between this Lund (Lu) population and a standard (St) population was examined with two sex-specific genetic markers. The field vole mtDNA and Y chromosome clines display a remarkable lack of coincidence, rarely observed in contact zones. The cline width for both markers is about 50 km, but the two clines are displaced from each other: the mtDNA cline is found in the central part of the study area, whereas the cline for the Y chromosome is located in the eastern part. Thus, the absolute width of the Lu-St zone spans about 95–110 km. As a result of the cline shift, all male hybrids carry the Lu-Y chromosome and St-type mtDNA. The other possible male hybrid class is lacking. The distinct noncoincidence of the mtDNA and Y chromosome clines is most likely explained by selection against male hybrids with the St-Y chromosome and Lu-mtDNA. It is possible that incompatibilities between the maternal genome of Lu-type animals and the paternal genome of St-type individuals exist. However, alternative explanations based on neutrality or selective advantage cannot be totally dismissed.  相似文献

 A polygalacturonase (PG) gene, TPG7 (Lyces;Pga1;8), has been cloned from tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., cv. Rutgers). RNA blot analysis reveals that TPG7 is highly expressed in pistils (ovary removed) from unopened and fully open flowers. Dissection of mature pistils demonstrated that TPG7 expression is limited to the top third (stigmatic region) of the pistils. This is contrasted with another tomato PG, TAPG4, which is also expressed in the same region of the pistil but only in mature pistils from fully open flowers. Hybridization of the TPG7 probe to anther RNA was nil to none and was barely detectable in RNA from leaf and flower abscission zones. The TPG7 polypeptide shares 39% sequence identity with the tomato fruit PG and between 63% and 73% sequence identities with six other tomato PGs.
