An experimental study was undertaken to assess the extent to which better-situated branches correlatively inhibit other branches on the same plant which are growing in relatively inferior conditions. The experiments were carried out on naturally-grown Onobrychis squarrosa L. (Papilionaceae), a dominant annual plant of the Mediterranean region of Israel. Treatments were carried out (i) on young plants that only had a seminal shoot, and (ii) on plants after lateral branches had started growing. Differential shade conditions were achieved by the repeated removal of neighbours on one side of the plants. The plants were either left intact or damaged by removing different parts of their branch system. In intact plants, growth responses to the differential light conditions which were expressed by the number of branches, leaves and fruits showed some evidence for support of the shaded branches by the exposed branches on the same plant. In contrast, heterogeneous treatments of both shade and branch damaging led to development that reflected marked correlative inhibition of the shaded parts of the plant. The results show that a latent potential for correlative inhibition between branches exists throughout plant development and that in Onobrychis it can be readily realised when plants are damaged. This could depend on known traits of auxin acting as a correlative signal of growing branches. The observed responses of Onobrychis can be understood as an adaptive strategy which reflects the low reliability of environmental signals and the high cost of changing the course of development, especially in short-lived annual plants.  相似文献

Reinvestigation of Nystroemia pectiniformis Halle from the Upper Shihhotze Formation of Shanxi Province, China, has led to the identification of new and important features of this enigmatic Late Permian seed plant, permitting its typification and diagnosis. After reassembling several of the previously studied specimens to form a single articulated branching system comprising at least four orders of branching, previously unknown features of its branching pattern and morphology have been characterized. First–order axes are wide and branch to one side only, bearing second–order branches either singly or in pairs and of two kinds: one fertile and bearing characteristic ovulate branching systems and the other presumably vegetative. Ovulate second–order axes are narrow and branch to one side only, producing numerous, closely spaced lateral branches in two alternate to sub–opposite rows. Lateral branches are slender and produce numerous ovulate branching systems to one side of the axis only. Ovulate branching systems divide unequally to produce 3–15 ultimate axes of different lengths that are planated. Each ultimate axis bears a single terminal ovule with 180 degree rotational symmetry and two horn–like integumentary projections distally. The other kind of second–order axes are distinct from those bearing ovules; they are wider and longer and branches occur on both sides of the secondary axis, lacking divisions in close proximity to the first–order axis. These have only been observed incomplete although their distinct morphology indicates they are unlikely to be ovulate branches from which ovules/seeds have been shed. Additional organs of the Nystroemia plant are considered, including pollen organs previously assigned by Halle to the same species (displaying its characteristic branching style), and also leaves of Chiropteris reniformis Halle that were probably borne on the larger kind of second–order branches. Implications of Nystroemia on seed plant evolution and distribution are discussed, and it is concluded that this most likely represents a late stratigraphic occurrence of a plesiomorphic hydrasperman–type seed plant with affinities closely allied to members of the Lyginopteridales.  相似文献

Abstract

The protonema of Orthotrichum obtusifolium, regenerated from leafy shoots, comprises a dense mass of largely unbranched exclusively upright filaments. All the cells have transverse cross-walls and contain numerous chloroplasts which become larger and discoidal in older filaments. Differentiation into chloro- and caulonema is absent. When upright filaments are transplanted onto an agar surface, they act as the main axes for a further set of upright branches. Buds and side branches are produced symmetrically at right angles to the mother cells. Protonemal morphogenesis hardly changes on nutrientfree medium and spherical brood cells are not produced after prolonged culture or in the presence of abscisic acid. Rhizoids with oblique septa and pigmented walls arise from the base of gametophores. These revert to protonemata when in contact with nutrient agar.

The upright filaments produce terminal and intercalary filamentous gemmae with well defined abscission cells. The latter swell and lose their contents prior to liberation. Cells immediately below the abscission cells produce side branches in acropetal succession. Secondary gemmae arise by percurrent proliferation and gemmae frequently germinate in situ.  相似文献

To assess genotypic variability in nutrient supply of shoot branches, the distribution of 32P and 45Ca exported from a source nodal root (24-h uptake period) was measured within a genotype of a large-leaved (Kopu) and a small-leaved (Tahora) cultivar of Trifolium repens. Source-sink relationships of plants were modified by root severance, defoliation, and shade treatments. In control plants of both genotypes distribution of 32P and 45Ca closely followed the pathways that could be predicted from the known phyllotactic constraints on the vascular system. As such there was little allocation of radioisotopes (3.1% and 2.5% of exported 32P and 45Ca, respectively) from the source root to branches on the apposite side of the parent axis (far-side branches). However, genotypic differences in nutrient allocation were apparent, when treatments were imposed to alter intra-plant source-sink relationships. In the large-leaved genotype, the imposed treatments had minor effects on the allocation to far-side branches: whereas, in the small-leaved genotype, root severance and defoliation treatments increased lateral transport to far-side branches to 30% (32P) and 10% (45Ca) of exported radioisotopes. Genotypes with low (8–9) and high (12–13) numbers of vascular bundles were selected from within the large-leaved cultivar. Distribution of 32P was then measured after plants had been pre-treated by removal of all far-side roots two days prior to labelling. Genotypes with low vascular bundle number allocated 20% and those with high vascular bundle number 3.2% of exported 32P to far-side branches. It was concluded (1) that genotypic variation exists within T. repens for potential to alter intra-plant allocation of mineral nutrients, in response to treatments that modify source-sink relationships within plants; and (2) that this variation is correlated with differences among genotypes in the organisation of the vasculature of their stolons.  相似文献

  • 1 The distribution of the body sizes of British aphids is right-skewed on a logarithmic axis, as in other taxa. Over the size range 2–5 mm there is a marked decrease in numbers of species with increase in size, which on a log log scale has an exponent of -3, The exponent for the right-hand side of the size distribution of British plants is -0.7.
  • 2 The sizes of sixty-eight species of the genus Aphis are weakly correlated with the size of their respective host plants.
  • 3 An aphid's size is strongly correlated with the length of its proboscis, which indicates the depth to which it has to probe plant tissues in order to feed.
  • 4 On average, trees host more species of aphids than either shrubs or herbaceous plants, which appears to be associated with the relative surface area of specific plant structures. The surface area of plants is mainly made of leaves and most species of aphids are leaf feeders. The largest and least numerous species of aphids feed on the branches and trunks of trees, the proportional cover of which is less than that of leaves.
  • 5 Taking into account all the above observations, a functional explanation in terms of the relative surface area of specific plant structures is offered to account for the size diversity curve of aphids.

The name Crenaticaulis verruculosus is proposed for slender, pseudomonopodially and dichoto-mously branching plants that bore opposite to subopposite sporangia along the stem and two rows of prominent, multicellular teeth on opposite sides of the terete axis. Epidermal cells were either narrow and elongate parallel to the stem or short with a papillate outer tangential wall. Axillary tubercles were present on one side of the stem near lateral branches. Some tubercles bore remnants of branches. Sporangia dehisced along their distal margins into two unequal halves. No spores were found. Occasional short lengths of stem were petrified by iron pyrite. Sections revealed a cortex consisting of four to six rows of thick-walled cells and a xylem strand. The strand was elliptical in transverse section and maturation was exarch. Tracheids were chiefly scalariform. It is suggested that the so-called axillary tubercles, known in several plants of Devonian age, were scars of rhizophores like those in the modern genus Selaginella. The plant is referred to the subdivision Zosterophyllophytina.  相似文献

The polysaccharides from the envelopes of heterocysts of Cylindrospermum licheniforme Kütz., and of heterocysts and spores of Anabaena variabilis Kütz., like those from the differentiated cells of Anabaena cylindrica Lemm., have a 1,3-linked backbone consisting of glucosyl and mannosyl residues in a molar ratio of approximately 3:1. As is the case with A. cylindrica the polysaccharides from A. variabilis and from the heterocysts of C. licheniforme have terminal xylosyl and galactosyl residues as side branches. In addition, the polysaccharide from C. licheniforme resembles that from A. cylindrica in having terminal mannosyl residues as side branches (absent from A. variabilis). The polysaccharides from A. variabilis resemble that from A. cylindrica in having glucose-containing side branches (absent from the heterocyst polysaccharide from C. licheniforme), but in contrast to the polysaccharides from the other two species they also have terminal arabinosyl residues as side branches. All of the polysaccharides mentioned appear to be structurally related; we present tentative structures for those not previously investigated. In contrast, the envelope of spores of C. licheniforme contains only a largely 4-linked galactan. The bulk of this envelope is not polysaccharide in nature, and contains aromatic groups.  相似文献

Background and Aims With the exception of angiosperms, the main euphyllophyte lineages (i.e. ferns sensu lato, progymnosperms and gymnosperms) had evolved laminate leaves by the Late Devonian. The evolution of laminate leaves, however, remains unclear for early-diverging ferns, largely represented by fern-like plants. This study presents a novel fern-like taxon with pinnules, which provides new insights into the early evolution of laminate leaves in early-diverging ferns.Methods Macrofossil specimens were collected from the Upper Devonian (Famennian) Wutong Formation of Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces, South China. A standard degagement technique was employed to uncover compressed plant portions within the rock matrix.Key Results A new fern-like taxon, Shougangia bella gen. et sp. nov., is described and represents an early-diverging fern with highly derived features. It has a partially creeping stem with adventitious roots only on one side, upright primary and secondary branches arranged in helices, tertiary branches borne alternately or (sub)oppositely, laminate and usually lobed leaves with divergent veins, and complex fertile organs terminating tertiary branches and possessing multiple divisions and numerous terminal sporangia.Conclusions Shougangia bella provides unequivocal fossil evidence for laminate leaves in early-diverging ferns. It suggests that fern-like plants, along with other euphyllophyte lineages, had independently evolved megaphylls by the Late Devonian, possibly in response to a significant decline in atmospheric CO2 concentration. Among fern-like plants, planate ultimate appendages are homologous with laminate pinnules, and in the evolution of megaphylls, fertile organs tend to become complex.  相似文献

The morphological effects of biotin and L-arginine on fruiting body formation of the ascomycete Sordaria macrospora are investigated by scanning electron and light microscopy. Biotin is recognized as an elongation factor and arginine as a branching factor in vegetative and reproductive hyphae. In the absence of exogenous biotin, development is blocked after the ascogonium-core hypha stage of protoperithecial morphogenesis, whereas linear growth of the myceliar front is maintained. The addition of exogenous arginine to a biotin deficient culture induces the formation of numerous side branches even in the older mycelium. Fruiting body formation, however, remains blocked at the protoperithecial stage as before, because of the inability of the side branches to elongate. When biotin and arginine are administered simultaneously, a most vigorous branching and growth are induced in the older mycelium, accompanied by a rapid and maximal formation of fruiting bodies. The results are summarized in a model of the exogenous control of hyphal morphogenesis. The model is designed to explain the relationship between fruiting and hyphal density as well as the edge effect on fruiting body formation.  相似文献

The vegetative morphology and life history of Halopteris filicina (Grateloup) Kutzing, collected from Korea, were examined in laboratory culture. Field plants attaining 3–5 cm in height were epilithic, tufted, yellowish-brown, and produced numerous erect axes with alternately distichous branches from compact basal discs. They were cultured under a 12:12 h LD photoperiod at 10°-C, 15°C and 20°C to observe the influence of temperature on reproduction. At 10°C plants grew only vegetatively, whereas at 15°C and 20°C they produced unilocular sporangia. Unispores released from sporangia developed into monoecious, anisogamous gametophytes that formed plurilocular female and male gametangia on the same lateral branches. The zygotes, by fusion of female macrogametes and male microgametes, developed into sporophytes bearing unilocular sporangia, whereas the unfused female gametes germinated parthenogenetically. This species was confirmed to have an isomorphic life history, basically similar to the other species of Sphacelariales.  相似文献

Volatile chemicals from Citrus and Salix host plants evoke orientation behavior in males of the species Anoplophora malasiaca (Thomson) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). These chemicals are emitted from wounded branches. We hypothesized that when released, these chemicals may indicate the presence of an individual to other conspecifics. Insects that originate from different host plants may use different plant chemicals from their own host to communicate with conspecifics. To further explore this theory, we investigated this communication system in a population of A. malasiaca from a third host plant, blueberry (Vaccinium spp.). Males from a blueberry host (Vaccinium population) were attracted to the odor of wounded Vaccinium branches when released near a female model in the laboratory, as has been observed in males found on Citrus and Salix host plants. The Vaccinium branch extract that was attractive to the males was separated into six fractions, of which two were active. Three active compounds were subsequently identified: β-caryophyllene and sulfur from the hexane fraction, and (E)-phytol in the weakly polar fraction. The latter two active compounds of Vaccinium branches were different from those found in Citrus and Salix.  相似文献

Abstract In arid areas, Phlebotomus papatasi obtains essential carbohydrates by feeding on green tissues of plants. There is a great variation in sugar content, metabolic rates and dark respiration between conspecific plants, and also between branches and leaves of the same plant. It is hypothesized that high nocturnal release of CO2 may guide the sand flies to rich sugar sources. Comparisons of Ph. papatasi feeding on branches of different plant species demonstrate a significant positive correlation between the level of sugar in leaves, the rate of sand fly feeding on them and the size of ingested sugar meals. Mean nocturnal CO2 emanation of low‐sugar Ricinus communis branches is 26.5 ppm and that of sugar rich branches is 86.3 ppm above room level. Low‐sugar Capparis spinosa branches release 45.0 ppm and the emission from sugar rich branches is 76.0 ppm above room level. Branches with similar emissions, placed behind net partitions, are used in no‐choice orientation experiments: R. communis branches releasing high CO2 levels are approached by 53.7% of the flies compared with 3.0% of flies that orientate to low CO2 branches. Capparis spinosa with high CO2 emission are approached by 9.8% of the flies compared with 0.95% of flies that orientate to low CO2 branches.  相似文献

A procedure has been described for the large-scale micropropagation of three Phragmites species, P. karka, P. communis and P. australis, from axillary buds excised from the main and side branches. Position of the buds on the branches had an effect on the bud break and establishment of the cultures under in vitro conditions. Lower buds of P. australis and middle buds of P. karka and P. communis were the most suitable. The presence of yeast extract as one of the ingredients of the sprouting medium helped in the early detection of systemic contamination. Multiple shoot formation and root initiation were obtained on Murashige and Skoog's basal medium supplemented with different concentrations of BA – 0.5 mg/l for P. karka, 0.25 mg/l for P. communis and 0.1 mg/l for P. australis– 0.5 mg/l Kn and 2% sucrose (w/v). Shoots and roots elongated on half-strength MS basal medium with 2% sucrose but without any plant growth regulators. A zone of root hair was observed in the case of P. australis. Hardening occurred on 95% of the plantlets within 30 days of transfer to the polyhouse. Over 10,000 plants were produced from three buds of each species within 9 months. The reproductive morphology of Dumontia incrassata (O. F. Müller) Lamouroux is described from New Hampshire, U.S.A. populations. Mature carpogonial and auxiliary branches are usually 5 and 6 celled, respectively, but both may range from 4 to 9 cells. Auxiliary branches are more numerous than carpogonial branches; however, the ratio of carpogonial to auxiliary branches increases towards the apex of the frond. A linear relationship exists between the position of the generative auxiliary cell and the number of cells in the auxiliary branches. In most cases the third cell from the top of the auxiliary branch becomes the generative auxiliary cell. The probabilities for different positions of the generative auxiliary cells are summarized. During spermatangial development, four mother cells are initially produced per cortical cell initial; subsequently, successive spermatangia are cut off obliquely and on opposite sides of each mother cell. The possible link between stomatal conductance (gL), leaf water potential ( Ψ L) and xylem cavitation was studied in leaves and shoots of detached branches as well as of whole plants of Laurus nobilis L. (Laurel). Shoot cavitation induced complete stomatal closure in air‐dehydrated detached branches in less than 10 min. By contrast, a fine regulation of gL in whole plants was the consequence of Ψ L reaching the cavitation threshold ( Ψ CAV) for shoots. A pulse of xylem cavitation in the shoots was paralleled by a decrease in gL of about 50%, while Ψ L stabilized at values preventing further xylem cavitation. In these experiments, no root signals were likely to be sent to the leaves from the roots in response to soil dryness because branches were either detached or whole plants were growing in constantly wet soil. The stomatal response to increasing evaporative demand appeared therefore to be the result of hydraulic signals generated during shoot cavitation. A negative feedback link is proposed between gL and Ψ CAV rather than with Ψ L itself.  相似文献

Development of the cotyledonary region in Chamaesyce maculata is described from germination of the seed through formation of the dense mat of branches which characterize this common weed. The cotyledonary node is trilacunar with split-lateral traces. Epicotyl development is limited to a pair of leaves (“V-leaves”) inserted directly above and decussate to the cotyledons. The two V-leaves are also vascularized by three traces and insertion of these traces relative to the vasculature at the immediately subjacent cotyledonary node is asymmetrical; four of the six V-leaf traces arise on one side of the intercotyledonary plane and two arise on the opposite side. Further shoot development is limited to lateral branches that develop sequentially from cotyledonary axillary buds, and then from de novo buds which arise at bases of previously developed lateral branches. The first axillary bud to develop is located on that half of the seedling which supplies the V-leaves with four traces. Development or insertion of the third and fourth branches (first and second de novo branches) relative to the first and second (cotyledonary) branches occurs in two patterns, termed cis and trans. Subsequent de novo branches generally develop between the two most recently developed branches on that half of the seedling, gradually forming a large branch plexus at the cotyledonary region. In mature robust specimens, however, the sequence of lateral branch development may become irregular. Structure of the cotyledonary region of C. maculata does not readily support widely held concepts of homology between the pleiochasium of Euphorbia subgenus Agaloma and the lateral branch system of Chamaesyce.  相似文献

We examined the effects of genetic transformation by Agrobacterium rhizogenes on the production of tylophorine, a phenanthroindolizidine alkaloid, in the Indian medicinal plant, Tylophora indica. Transformed roots induced by the bacterium grew in axenic culture and produced shoots or embryogenic calli in the absence of hormone treatments. However, hormonal treatment was required to regenerate shoots in root explants of wild type control plants. Transformed plants showed morphological features typically seen in transgenic plants produced by A. rhizogenes, which include, short internodes, small and wrinkled leaves, more branches and numerous plagiotropic roots. Plants regenerated from transformed roots showed increased biomass accumulation (350–510% in the roots and 200–320% in the whole plants) and augmented tylophorine content (20–60%) in the shoots, resulting in a 160–280% increase in tylophorine production in different clones grown in vitro.  相似文献

A chimeric plant was observed in the F2 generation of a cross between a mutant cultivar, Ife BPC, and a germplasm line, TVu 2, in cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. The chimeric plant had four lateral branches, one of which was intensely variegated, while the others were mostly green with few white sectors. F3 progeny from the intensely variegated branch of this plant were all variegated, while seed derived from the mostly green branches produced only green progeny. In subsequent generations, the descendants of the variegated branch bred true for the variegated trait, while those of the mostly green branches were also true-breeding for green colour. No pure-green or pure-white shoots were observed in any of the variegated plants examined in this study. Consequently, no pure-green or pure-white seedlings were produced from seeds harvested from the variegated plants. The results of reciprocal crosses between variegated and normal green plants indicate that variegation is inherited in a strictly uniparental maternal fashion. This is the first report of a cytoplasmically inherited mutation affecting foliage colour in cowpea. Received: 10 March 2000 / Accepted: 16 May 2000  相似文献

A mutant of spikelet differentiation in rice called frizzle panicle (fzp) was discovered in the progeny of a cross between Oryza sativa ssp. indica cv. V20B and cv. Hua1B. The mutant exhibits normal plant morphology but has apparently fewer tillers. The most striking change in fzp is that its spikelet differentiation is completely blocked, with unlimited subsequent rachis branches generated from the positions where spikelets normally develop in wild-type plants. Genetic analysis suggests that fzp is controlled by a single recessive gene, which is temporarily named fzp(t). Based on its mutant phenotype, fzp(t) represents a key gene controlling spikelet differentiation. Some F2 mutant plants derived from various genetic background appeared as the “middle type”, suggesting that the action of fzp(t) is influenced by the presence of redundant, modifier or interactive genes. By using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and bulked segregant analysis (BSA) method, fzp(t) gene was mapped in the terminal region of the long arm of chromosome 7, with RM172 and RM248 on one side, 3.2 cM and 6.4 cM from fzp(t), and RM18 and RM234 on the other side, 23.1 cM and 26.3 cM from fzp(t), respectively. These results will facilitate the positional cloning and function studies of the gene.  相似文献
