A new method of scoring dental microscopic use wear, initially developed for and applied to extant and extinct ungulates, is here applied to primates, and the efficacy of the method as a tool for diagnosing diet in both ungulates and primates is established. The method employs standard refractive light microscopy instead of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and all use-wear features are counted or scored under low magnification (35 x). We use measurement systems analysis (variance components analysis of sources of measurement error) to evaluate the consistency and reproducibility of measurements using this method. The method is shown to have low intra- and inter-observer measurement error, and to effectively distinguish among graminivores, folivores, and frugivores. It can also be used to identify seed predators and to diagnose hard-object feeding. The method is also shown to be robust to the selection of measurement site; it works equally well when applied to upper or to lower molars. Finally, we use analysis of variance to examine the consistency of the signals across mammalian orders, and discriminant function analysis to develop dietary diagnostic tools for a set of "classified" primates with known diets. We test the success of these tools not merely by examining their a posteriori classification "success," but by using them to construct predicted dietary profiles for a sample of unclassified extant primate species, again with known diets.  相似文献

Phytosterol intake is recommended as an adjunctive therapy for hypercholesterolemia, and plant sterols/stanols can reduce cholesterol absorption at the intestinal lumen through the Niemann-Pick C1 Like 1 (NPC1L1) transporter pathway by competitive solubilization in mixed micelles. Phytosterol absorption is of less magnitude than cholesterol and is preferably secreted in the intestinal lumen by ABCG5/G8 transporters. Therefore, plasma levels of plant sterols/stanols are negligible compared with cholesterol, under an ordinary diet. The mechanisms of cholesterol and plant sterols absorption and the whole-body pool of sterols are discussed in this chapter. There is controversy about treatment with statins inducing further increase in plasma non-cholesterol sterols raising concerns about the safety of supplementation of plant sterols to such drugs. In addition, increase in plant sterols has also been reported upon consumption of plant sterol-enriched foods, regardless of other treatments. Rare mutations on ABCG5/G8 transporters affecting cholesterol/non-cholesterol extrusion, causing sitosterolemia with xanthomas and premature atheroslerotic disease are now known, and cholesterol/plant sterols absorption inhibitor, ezetimibe, emerges as the drug that reduces phytosterolemia and promotes xanthoma regression. On the other hand, common polymorphisms affecting the NPC1L1 transporter can interfere with the action of ezetimibe. Gene-diet interactions participate in this intricate network modulating the expression of genetic variants on specific phenotypes and can also affect the individual response to the hypolipidemic treatment. Copper has been known to be essential for health for more than three quarters of a century. Myriad experiments with animals reveal that the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and nervous systems are most sensitive to deficiency. Copper in the Western diet has been decreasing at least since the 1930s; half of the adult population consumes less than the amount recommended in the European Communities and the United Kingdom. At least one fourth of adults consume less than the estimated average requirement published for the United States and Canada. Hundreds of people have been reported in journals about medicine and neurology rather than nutrition to have impaired copper nutriture based on the criteria of low copper concentrations and low activities of enzymes dependent on copper in various fluids and tissues. In contrast, only 46 people have participated in depletion/repletion experiments needed to define requirements. Almost 1000 people have benefited from supplements containing copper in controlled trials. People deficient in copper are being identified increasingly; it is unknown if unusually high requirements or unusually low diets are causal. Alzheimer's disease, ischemic heart disease and osteoporosis are the most likely human illnesses from low copper intakes.  相似文献

Diet quality influences organismal fitness within and across generations.For herbivorous insects,the transgenerational effecets of diet remain relatively underexplored.Usinga3×3×2 factorial experiment,we evaluated how N enrichment in parental diets of Neolemd abbreviata(Larcordaire)(C oleoptera:Chrysomelidae),a biological control agent for Tradescantia fluminensis Vell.(Commelinaceae),may influence life history and performance of Fi and F2 offspring under reciprocal experiments.We found limited transgenerational effects of foliar nitrogen variability among life-history traits in both larvae and adults.Larval weight gain and mortality were responsive to parental diet contrary to feeding damage,pupal weight and duration taken to pupate.There were significant parental diet x test interactions in larval feeding damage,weight gain,pupal weight and time to pupation.Generally,offspring from parents under high N plants performed better even under low N test plants.Adult traits including oviposition selection,feeding weight and longevity did not respond to the efects of parental diet nor its interaction with test diet as was the case in the larval stage.However,the main efects of test diet were more important in determining adult performance in both generations suggesting limited sensitivity to parental diet in the adult stage.Our results show conflicting responses to parental diet between larvae and adults ofthe same generation among an insec species with both actively feeding larual and adult life stagee These tranegeneratinonal efferte,or lack thereof,may have implications on the field performance of N.abbrevita under heterogencous nutritional landscapes.  相似文献

We investigate whether egg load (a surrogate for fecundity) drives host specificity in a herbivorous insect. In many insects, including our study organism (Edith's checkerspot butterfly), both egg load and tendency to accept low-ranked hosts increase during each search for an oviposition site. Effects on host acceptance of egg load and passage of time are thereby potentially confounded. We conducted two experiments designed to disentangle these effects. In both experiments, we estimated the times of first acceptance of both a high-ranked and a low-ranked host, without allowing the insects to oviposit. In the first experiment, we measured egg load at the time of first acceptance of the low-ranked host. The later the time of first acceptance, the higher was the fecundity. We therefore reject the hypothesis that all insects accepted the low-ranked host at the same predetermined egg load. In the second experiment, we measured egg load 48 h after the high-ranked host was first accepted. We found no relationship between egg load and timing of acceptance of the low-ranked host. Insects with higher rates of egg accumulation did not accept the low-ranked host sooner. Taken together, these results suggest that acceptance of the low-ranked host is not driven directly by egg load. Rather, this acceptance results from some other process that is influenced by time since last oviposition. We conclude that there is no evidence to support the assumption that females with high rates of egg accumulation are more likely to accept low-ranked hosts.  相似文献

Extensive research in the past decade has revealed cancer to be a multigenic disease caused by perturbation of multiple cell signalling pathways and dysregulation of numerous gene products, all of which have been linked to inflammation. It is also becoming evident that various lifestyle factors, such as tobacco and alcohol use, diet, environmental pollution, radiation and infections, can cause chronic inflammation and lead to tumourigenesis. Chronic diseases caused by ongoing inflammation therefore require chronic, not acute, treatment. Nutraceuticals, compounds derived from fruits, vegetables, spices and cereals, can be used chronically. This study discusses the molecular targets of some nutraceuticals that happen to be markers of chronic inflammation and how they can prevent or treat cancer. These naturally-occurring agents in the diet have great potential as anti-cancer drugs, thus proving Hippocrates, who proclaimed 25 centuries ago, 'Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food'.  相似文献

Food consumption causes distinct microwear patterns on teeth, especially in mammals that actively masticate food. Here we perform a microwear analysis to assess the relationships between diet and microwear features of diverse Carnivora. Our database includes approximately 230 individuals of 17 extant species having different diets. We analyse both slicing and grinding facets of M1 and m1. The proposed method is reproducible and allows the differentiation, especially on slicing facets, of microwear poles that are significantly distinct from one another. In carnivorans, the microwear features mainly result from their foraging behavior and the proportion of certain food items consumed. We applied our method to extinct taxa such as the amphicyonid Amphicyon major. The results on the m1 slicing facet indicate dietary similarities between this large Miocene predator and the extant red fox; results from the m1 grinding facet do not have equivalent in extant taxa, however.  相似文献

Summary The results of an analysis of gorilla diet in the Lopé Reserve, Gabon are presented. Samples were assayed for nutrients and plant secondary compounds (total phenols, condensed tannins and alkaloids) in an attempt to explain gorilla food choice. The diet is the most diverse so far analysed for gorillas; it seems to be a balance between sugary fruit, proteinaceous leaves, and relatively fibrous stems. Most fruits and herbaceous stems are succulent, but some drier, fibrous fruit and bark is also consumed. Seeds are another component of the diet, including unripe ones. Fruit, seeds, leaves and bark may all contain very high levels of total phenols and condensed tannins; but all herbaceous stems assayed contain low levels of these compounds. Alkaloids are not apparently a significant component of gorilla foods, and may be avoided. Gorillas at Lopé tend to avoid fatty fruit, and select leaves which are high in protein and low in fibre compared to the general vegetation. When fruit and preferred young leaves are scarce, proteinaceous barks and mature leaves, and sugary pith, are important sources of nutrients. We conclude that gorillas exploit the broad frugivore niche in West African lowland forests, and are part of the frugivore community there. What distinguishes them is their ability to eat large fibrous fruit, mature leaves and stems, and to overcome high levels of phenolics (we use phenolics as an umbrella term for both total phenols and condensed tannins). Gorilla diet at Lopé overlaps greatly with that of sympatric, frugivorous, primates, and resembles more closely that of chimpanzees than it does gorilla diet studied elsewhere in Africa.  相似文献

Does diet in Celtic Sea fishes reflect prey availability?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Feeding preferences of Celtic Sea fishes were investigated using a database of stomach content records, collected between 1977 and 1994. The diet of cod Gadus morhua , hake Merluccius merluccius , megrim Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis , whiting Merlangius merlangus and saithe Pollachius virens changed markedly as the animals grew larger, and although large predators generally chose larger bodied prey, the variability of prey sizes consumed also increased. Large predators continued to select small, low value, benthic prey ( e.g . Callionymus spp. and Trisopterus spp.) which were easier to catch, rather than larger, more energy lucrative pelagic prey ( e.g . mackerel Scomber scombrus ), even though these pelagic prey‐fishes were nearly always available and were often very abundant. Stock estimates of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea and U.K. groundfish survey catches were used as indices of prey abundance. Blue‐whiting Micromesistius poutassou and other small pelagic fishes ( Argentina spp. and clupeoids) were identified as being particularly important, and were consumed by some predators more often than would be expected given the abundance of these prey in the environment. There was no evidence for density‐dependent feeding by predators on mackerel and only hake exhibited density‐dependent feeding on horse‐mackerel. Hake, cod and megrim consumed more blue‐whiting when this prey was at higher abundance in the environment. In choosing what prey to consume, predators must balance costs and benefits, considering the quality of prey and the energy expended during search, capture and handling.  相似文献

Ornithogenic soils (N = 97) dated up to 7000 Before Present (bp) were sampled in 16 relict and modern breeding colonies of Adélie penguin along the Victoria Land coast (Ross Sea, Antarctica). Taxonomic identification of fish otoliths (N = 677) recovered in these soils allowed to identify the Antarctic silverfish as the most eaten prey (90.1%) throughout the investigated period. A morphometric analysis of the otoliths revealed that the Adélie penguin primarily selected prey averaging 67.23 ± 23 mm of standard length. Temporal distribution of Pleuragramma antarcticum showed a peak between 2,000 and 4,000 years bp, a period corresponding to the maximum spread of Adélie penguin in the Victoria Land. Possible explanations of the variations of the abundance of the fish prey in the diet are discussed in the context of the paleoclimatic events and as possible consequences of dietary shifts due to the temporal variation of prey availability in the Ross Sea ecosystem.  相似文献

A climatic regime shift during the mid-1970s in the North Pacific resulted in decreased availability of lipid-rich fish to seabirds and was followed by a dramatic decline in number of kittiwakes breeding on the Pribilof Islands. Although production of chicks in the mid-1970s was adequate to sustain kittiwake populations in the early 1980s, the disappearance of birds from breeding colonies apparently exceeded recruitment. No mechanism has been proposed to explain why recruitment would differ among fledglings fed lipid-rich or lipid-poor fish during development. Here we show that diets low in lipids induce nutritional stress and impair cognitive abilities in young red-legged kittiwakes, Rissa brevirostris. Specifically, growth retardation, increased secretion of stress hormones and inferior ability to associate food distribution with visual cues were observed in individuals fed lipid-poor diets. We conclude that lipid-poor diets during development affect the quality of young seabirds, which is likely to result in their increased mortality and low recruitment.  相似文献

Administration of oral contraceptive (OC) has been associated with body fluid retention and in high doses over a long period, promotes hypertension. This present investigation tests the hypothesis that the dietary calcium supplementation increases salt and water excretion in OC (norgestre/ethinylestradiol) treated 32 female albino rats randomly distributed into four (1-4) groups of 8 rats each: Control, OC-treated, OC-treated+ Calcium diet fed and Calcium diet fed only respectively. OC was administered to the appropriate groups by gavage. Experimental diet contained 2.5% calcium supplement. Plasma and urinary [Na+] [K+] were evaluated after 8 weeks of experimentation by flame photometry and plasma [Ca2+] by colorimetric method. OC-treatment induced a significant fall in urinary [Na+]. Water excretion was significantly reduced in these animals (control, 3.1±0.56 Vs OC-treated rats, 1.47±0.16). OC-treated rats had significantly higher plasma [K+] compared to control rats. Calcium supplementation induced increases in plasma [Na+], [K+] and augmented urinary Na+ excretion (OC-treated + Ca2+ diet Vs OC-treated only). Compared with the control rats, high Ca2+ diet fed rats exhibited significant increases in plasma [Na+] and [K+] accompanied by significant decreases in urinary H20 excretion. These results strongly suggest that high dietary Ca2+ supplementation increases salt and water excretion in OC-treated rats and potentially moderates fluid retention and blood pressure in these animals, and may be of clinical significance in OC-induced abnormal fluid retention and perhaps OC-induced hypertension.Keywords: Hypercalcemic-diet, Oral contraceptive, Plasma electrolytes, Hypertension, Female-albino-rats.  相似文献

Food item categorization should reduce the cost of information processing by herbivores when selecting their diet in complex environments. We assessed the ability of sheep to categorize food items by offering them ryegrass (Rg) and fescue (Fe) in pots cut tall (T) or short (S). Ewes’ preferences were tested in three binary choices, RgS-FeT, RgS-FeS and FeT-FeS, before and after aversive conditioning against RgT. After conditioning, the ewes decreased their preference for RgS, but their choice between tall and short fescue was unchanged. Thus the ewes generalized their aversion to the species but not to the sward height. Comparing the choices between the two species offered at the same height showed choices were similar between RgS and FeS here and between RgT and FeT in Ginane and Dumont (2006). We conclude that sheep can use species-based, open-ended categorization when selecting their diet, while other plant characteristics, such as sward height, are not used to define a category, despite their importance in diet selection.  相似文献

The study evaluated whether a glutamate-enriched diet would restore glutamine tissue pools and maintain tissue trophicity in endotoxemic rats. For this purpose, young male Sprague-Dawley rats received an intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli at 3 mg/kg body weight. After 24 hours of food deprivation, the rats were enterally refed for 48 hours using Osmolite enriched with glutamate at 4 g/kg/d (LPS-Glu group, n = 7) or glycine isonitrogenous to glutamate (LPS-Gly group, n = 7). A control group (healthy group, n = 7) had free access to a standard rodent diet. Tissue weights and protein contents were significantly lower in both LPS-treated groups than in the healthy group. No plasma or tissue accumulation of glutamate was observed except in the liver. Glutamine concentrations were increased in the jejunum, liver, and plasma in the LPS-Glu group versus the other two groups (P < 0.05). Conversely, they were depleted in muscles of the endotoxemic groups versus the healthy group (P < 0.05). Villus height was significantly greater in the LPS-Glu group than in the LPS-Gly group in the jejunum (P < 0.05), but not in the ileum. In conclusion, a glutamate-enriched diet administered enterally to endotoxemic rats can counteract glutamine depletion in the splanchnic area but not in muscles. In addition, glutamate displayed a trophic effect restricted to the jejunum.  相似文献

The relationship between tooth roots and diet is largely unexplored, although a logical relationship between harder diets and increased root surface area is suggested. Existing studies of primates, carnivorans and phyllostomid bats have indicated a relationship between diet hardness, bite force and tooth root surface area. The goal of this study was to determine whether root surface area can act as a potential surrogate for bite force and diet in cricetid rodents. Using microcomputed tomography (microCT), tooth root morphology from six species of rodents, two grass eaters (Calomys callosus and Reithrodon auritus), two seed eaters (Phyllotis darwini and Ochrotomys nuttalli) and two insect eaters (Akodon azarae and Oxymycterus hispidus) were compared. Similar to other studies, these rodents did exhibit differences in tooth root surface area based on diet classification, but food hardness did not seem to be a factor. Grass-eating species showed significantly larger roots relative to the other diet groups (p = 0.001). Bite force was estimated using skull measurements. Seed eaters were found to have a larger bite force, followed by grass and insect eaters, though the trend did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.058). No strong relationship was found between estimated bite force and tooth root surface area. In this study, the mechanics of grass eating seem to have a stronger effect on tooth root surface area than bite force. microCT allows the nondestructive quantification of previously difficult-to-access tooth morphology; this method shows the potential for tooth roots to provide valuable dietary, behavioral and ecological information in rodents.  相似文献

Metabarcoding studies provide a powerful approach to estimate the diversity and abundance of organisms in mixed communities in nature. While strategies exist for optimizing sample and sequence library preparation, best practices for bioinformatic processing of amplicon sequence data are lacking in animal diet studies. Here we evaluate how decisions made in core bioinformatic processes, including sequence filtering, database design, and classification, can influence animal metabarcoding results. We show that denoising methods have lower error rates compared to traditional clustering methods, although these differences are largely mitigated by removing low‐abundance sequence variants. We also found that available reference datasets from GenBank and BOLD for the animal marker gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI) can be complementary, and we discuss methods to improve existing databases to include versioned releases. Taxonomic classification methods can dramatically affect results. For example, the commonly used Barcode of Life Database (BOLD) Classification API assigned fewer names to samples from order through species levels using both a mock community and bat guano samples compared to all other classifiers (vsearch‐SINTAX and q2‐feature‐classifier's BLAST + LCA, VSEARCH + LCA, and Naive Bayes classifiers). The lack of consensus on bioinformatics best practices limits comparisons among studies and may introduce biases. Our work suggests that biological mock communities offer a useful standard to evaluate the myriad computational decisions impacting animal metabarcoding accuracy. Further, these comparisons highlight the need for continual evaluations as new tools are adopted to ensure that the inferences drawn reflect meaningful biology instead of digital artifacts.  相似文献
