The inherited blood factors of some Northern Nigerians.

Results are presented on 147 individuals from northern Nigeria who were tested for the red cell antigens A, A1, B, H, M, N, S, s, He, P1, C, D, Du, E, c, e, Ce, v, Lua, Jka (some for Jkb), Lua, K, Jsa (some for Jsb), Kpa, Rd, Fya and Fyb, and for variants of the serum proteins haptoglobin and transferrin and of the red cell enzymes acid phosphatase, phosphoglucomutase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, adenylate kinase, adenosine deaminase, phosphohexose isomerase and lactate dehydrogenase. The results found are of interest as they are among the very few published for this area of Nigeria, but they show little that is unexpected for people living in this region.     

A preliminary report on my life in science

I describe my wanderings from the United States to East Germany and back. I hope this gives a glimpse of science in East Germany and encourages people who do science under less than favorable conditions. Although elements of my story are unique, the main points are general: don't be afraid to start something new; it pays to be persistent; and science is a passion--if it feels like fun, you've probably got it right.     

贵州黏菌初报

通过对作者2005年采自贵州的119份黏菌标本和从湿室培养10份树皮基物获得的19份黏菌标本进行的鉴定分类研究,以及对保存在中国科学院微生物研究所真菌标本馆和中国科学院昆明植物研究所隐花植物标本馆的共21份黏菌标本的鉴定复核,报告了目前已明确了的贵州黏菌51种,分隶属于6目9科21属,其中44种为贵州新记录种,白鳞钙丝菌和红柄发菌为中国新记录种。     

Treatment of pulmonary embolism with streptokinase. A preliminary report

Nine patients with arteriographically proved pulmonary embolism have been treated by a 36-hour infusion of streptokinase. Satisfactory haemodynamic and arteriographic resolution was obtained in four patients with acute massive pulmonary embolism and in two with recent minor embolism. Little or no haemodynamic or arteriographic improvement was obtained in three patients with pulmonary thromboembolic disease of longer duration.     

Crystallographic analysis of the neurophysin-oxytocin complex. A preliminary report

Single crystals of a bovine neurophysin II-oxytocin complex have been obtained using (NH4)2SO4 as the precipitating agent. The crystals diffract to at least 2.7 A resolution, belong to Laue group 4/mmm and exhibit systematic absences consistent with either space group P4(1)2(1)2 or P4(3)2(1)2. The cell dimensions are a = b = 69.07 A and c = 113.26 A. The crystals contain one neurophysin-oxytocin dimer per asymmetric unit. Based on a Vm of 2.9 A3/Da, the solvent content is calculated to be 58%. Chromatographic analysis of the dissolved crystals suggests the presence of three oxytocin molecules per neurophysin dimer.     

Rhinoplasty: creating an aesthetic tip. A preliminary report

A new approach for creating an anatomically aesthetic nasal tip is presented. It is based on extensive cadaver dissections which demonstrate that a convex domal segment plus a sharp domal segment-lateral crural drop-off are key determinants of a refined tip. This configuration can be achieved with sutures in a manner similar to creating the anthelical curl in an otoplasty. Two operative variations are presented. One achieves tip refinement with a limited increase in projection, while the other provides maximum projection. Currently, the technique is of value in bilateral cleft lip noses, posttraumatic deformities, certain secondary cases, and very selected primary aesthetic cases where tip refinement and projection are limited.     

Ostracodes from the Early Cenomanian of Jordan.A preliminary report

Ostracode faunas have been identified for the firsttime in Early marine Cenomanian sediments of the Ajlun Group (Jordan) outcropping East of the Jordan Rift Valley. The faunal assemblages contain 14 genera and 17 species. Sediments indicate the internal part of a carbonate platform. The Ostracodes are closely related to those of neighbouring regions; accordingly, in the Tethyan context, Jordan belongs to the North Africa — Middle East bioprovince.
