The ectodermal slow system (SS1) is one of 3 separate nerve nets in sea anemones. SS1 sensory responses coordinate swimming in Stomphia coccinea (escape response) and expansion to dissolved food substances in Urticina felina (pre-feeding response). Here we have studied Actinia equina, Anemonia viridis, and Anthopleura ballii. Although these anemones can escape from nudibranch predators, the SS1 response to attack by Aeolidia papillosa is probably evoked mechanically rather than chemically (cf. Stomphia). Multiple SS1 pulses to mechanical stimulation are described for the first time. Previous work has shown that in the pre-feeding response of Urticina the SS1 is excited by betaine; in Actinia however, the excitant is proline. The anemones studied can utilize the SS1 in 2 different behavioural responses (escape and pre-feeding/feeding) because the different receptors involved respond at different frequencies (at around 0.6 Hz in escape and 0.2 Hz in pre-feeding).  相似文献

Four species of the family Polycentropodidae –Plectrocnemia baculifera, P. kusnezovi, Paranyctiophylax hjangsanchonus and Polyplectropunocturnus– are recorded from Korea. Shallow subtidal populations of sea anemones occupying hard substrates along the California (Pacific) and Gulf of Maine (Atlantic) coasts of the USA are compared. The diversity of anemones in the southern Gulf of Maine to 35 m is low (4 species) in contrast to similar habitats in California (at least 11 species), but parallel patterns of individual size, distribution and predation impacts occur. Water motion influences depth distribution and size, while predation affects size, population structure and habitat selection. The nudibranch Aeolidia papillosa exerts a similar pressure on population structure in some anemone species in both areas as a size selective predator. The seastar Dermasterias imbricata appears to magnify the selective pressure for large size in the eastern Pacific coastal zone. Interspecific aggression of anemones determines some distribution patterns in areas of overlap.  相似文献

Evidence of alloparental care during the incubation stage has largely been demonstrated for species that incubate their offspring externally in a nest. Alloparental care in these species generally consists of the rearing of mixed broods which contain a low proportion of “foreign” young alongside the host's own offspring. However, many animals, including sea anemones, incubate offspring either on or within their bodies. The beadlet anemone Actinia equina incubate their young internally, and as many sea anemones are capable of reproducing both sexually and asexually, the origin of these internally brooded young has been the subject of much debate. While genetically identical young are brooded internally under the juvenile stage, it is thought that those produced sexually are released as larvae into the water and must return to the gastric cavity of an adult in order for metamorphosis to occur. As the likelihood of a planula larva finding its way back to its parent is slim, this suggests that alloparental care may play a role in the survival of juveniles in this species, a hypothesis first suggested a century ago but rarely tested. Here, using highly polymorphic microsatellite markers, we find evidence of alloparental care in A. equina. Our results indicate that while a high proportion of juveniles were genetically identical to their brooding adult, the remaining juveniles showed stark genetic differences to their brooding adult. These juveniles shared far fewer alleles with their “parent” than expected under sexual reproduction, indicating that they were not the adult's offspring. Furthermore, we found variation in the genetic composition of broods, which consisted either of (a) entirely genetically identical individuals, (b) a mix of unique individuals and clonemates or (c) entirely unique individuals, that is no shared genotype. Our results thus indicate that adult A. equina tolerate the presence of non-offspring within their gastric cavity and furthermore that they may incubate entirely “foreign” broods.  相似文献

Synopsis The 25 species ofAmphiprion and one ofPremnas (family Pomacentridae) are obligate symbionts of 10 species of facultatively symbiotic sea anemones. Throughout the tropical Indo-West Pacific range of the relationship, a fish species inhabits only certain of the hosts potentially available to it. This specificity is due to the fishes. Five fishes occupy six sea anemone species at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia.Entacmaea quadricolor harborsP. biaculeatus, A. melanopus andA. akindynos. Adults ofPremnas occur deeper than about 3 m in large, primarily solitary actinians; juveniles may occupy peripheral members ofEntacmaea clones in shallow water. Specimens ofA. melanopus live exclusively in clonal anemones, which are found no deeper than 3 m. Most individuals ofA. akindynos inEntacmaea are juveniles, occurring shallow and deep, in solitary anemones or at the margins of clones. Interspecific as well as intraspecific social control of growth may be responsible for keeping fish small at clone fringes. Conspicuous specimens ofE. quadricolor depend upon their anemonefish to survive. Actinians cleared of symbionts disappeared within 24 h, probably having been eaten by reef fishes.Entacmaea, the most abundant and widespread host actinian at Lizard Island and throughout the range of the association, is also arguably the most attractive to anemonefishes. I believe its vulnerability to predation was a factor in its evolving whatever makes it desirable to fishes. Experimental transfers pitted fish of one species against those of another, controlling for ecophenotype of host, and sex, size and number of fish. Competitive superiority was in the same order as abundance and over-all host specificity:P. biaculeatus, A. melanopus, A. akindynos. At least three factors are necessary to explain patterns of species specificity - innate or learned host preference, competition, and stochastic processes.  相似文献

The hormathiid sea anemone Allantactis parasitica was found living as an epibiont on numerous species of gastropods at depths of 725-1100 m along the continental slope of eastern Canada. The proportion of bathyal gastropods hosting 1-6 sea anemones reached 72.5% in a single trawl. Although A. parasitica was occasionally found on other substrata (i.e. empty shells, pebbles), laboratory trials confirmed that they preferably associate with living gastropods. Settlement of planula larvae occurred significantly more often on the shells of live bathyal gastropods than on all other substrata present in the tanks. Juvenile sea anemones (∼ 1 mm diameter) readily moved from the mud or other inert substrata onto shells of burrowed bathyal gastropods. Conversely, larvae, juveniles and adults of A. parasitica never associated with any shallow-water gastropods when given the opportunity. Trials exposing predatory sea stars (Leptasterias polaris) from shallow and bathyal depths to bathyal gastropods (Buccinum undatum) with epibiotic A. parasitica, and to asymbiotic bathyal and shallow-water B. undatum, revealed adaptive behaviours in both prey and predator. Shallow-water gastropods (devoid of epibionts) reacted defensively to L. polaris, whereas bathyal gastropods relied mostly on their epibionts to protect them, thus falling prey to L. polaris when the epibionts were removed. L. polaris from bathyal depths typically ignored symbiotic gastropods, but they consistently preyed on asymbiotic ones, while L. polaris from shallow areas initially attempted to prey on all gastropods, but learned to avoid those harbouring sea anemones. Furthermore, living as epibionts afforded sea anemones a means to escape one of their own predators, the sea star Crossaster papposus. The mutualistic relationship between hormathiid sea anemones and bathyal gastropods from the NW Atlantic may have evolved in response to predation pressure.  相似文献

Summary

Diverse modes of clonal propagation were documented in tiny zooxanthellate sea anemones from the tropical Pacific. All were boloceroidids, as indicated by the tentacles' basal sphincter and the animals' swimming behavior. In one species, single tentacles were pinched off at the sphincter, shed into the coelenteron, and brooded there while regenerating into minute new polyps in ~4 days. Within a day of release, the propagules fed on live prey and swam by lashing the tentacles. A similar process occurs in another species studied, Bunodeopsis medusoides. In a third species a previously undescribed mode of replication was seen. These anemones bore a primary cycle of tentacles that engaged actively in feeding and swimming, were not shed, and showed no sign of producing polyps. Alternating with these tentacles were fan-like clusters of shorter tentacles that were relatively inactive in feeding and swimming. Despite the sphincter at the base of each of these clustered tentacles, they were never shed singly; instead, each cluster separated as a unit that then regenerated into a new polyp. Two other replicative modes were observed in similar, minute boloceroidid anemones collected together in the same habitat: longitudinal fission, not previously reported in boloceroidids, and pedal scission. Modes of replication in these actinians are more diverse than once thought, but the selective forces behind this variation are so far unexplored. These prolific anemones may regularly be taking advantage of their combination of swimming and regenerative abilities to achieve dispersal, not only by sexually produced larvae, but also by cloned polyps.  相似文献

Feeding by host hermit crabs Dardanus pedunculatus on their symbiotic sea anemones Calliactis polypus was investigated using animals collected at Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. In the first experiment, changes in the number of sea anemones on hermit crab shells were recorded in single‐and double‐crab trials without food and single‐crab trials with food. The number of sea anemones significantly decreased under starved conditions. The extent of this decrease per single hermit crab was higher in the double‐crab trials than in the single‐crab trials. Direct observations and video recordings showed that hermit crabs occasionally removed sea anemones from their own shells, and also from partners’ shells in the double‐crab trials, and consumed them. In the second experiment, fed and unfed hermit crabs with or without sea anemones were examined for body weight changes. Fed hermit crabs gained weight whereas unfed hermit crabs lost it. The degree of weight loss in unfed hermit crabs was significantly higher in those without sea anemones, which indicates some value of the latter as food. We offer some speculations on the course of development of this symbiosis, with predation on sea anemones having played an important initial role.  相似文献

The content of biologically active polypeptides in aqueous and ethanol extracts of seven sea anemone species collected near Sakhalin Island (Sea of Okhotsk) and in Posyet Bay (Sea of Japan) was analyzed. Water extracts of the sea anemone Cribrinopsis similis showed the highest hemolytic activity, while ethanol extracts proved to have toxic properties. The levels of toxic and hemolytic activity of extracts of sea anemones inhabiting northern temperate waters were 2 to 3 orders of magnitude lower, compared to tropic species. The reason for this is likely to be the differences in the habitat conditions and biological traits of these animals. The water extracts of all species possessed proteolytic, phospholipase A2, and low DNAase activities, except Actinostola sp., whose aqueous extract contained a high activity alkaline DNAase. The species studied contained a wide range of proteinase inhibitors, O-glycosyl hydrolases (glycosidases and polysaccharide hydrolases). Water extracts of C. similis and Stomphia coccinea possessed the highest laminarinase activity. High activity of N-galactopyranosidase was found in water extracts of S. coccinea and Oulactis orientalis.  相似文献

Synopsis At Sesoko Island, stocks of anemonefishes were observed for 2 years in a 350 m × 150 m area where host sea anemones were sparse. About 40% of the pairs separated, mostly due to typhoon attacks or displacement. Widowed mates remained and acquired new mates on the same sea anemone, except for one case. New mates were immigrant adults inAmphiprion clarkii and A.frenatus, but resident juveniles inA. perideraion. A. clarkii andA. frenatus moved between sea anemones and sometimes displaced smaller consexuals, butA. perideraion rarely moved. The difference in mobility among the 3 species was related to the mean difference in standard length between the largest juveniles in breeding groups and the minimum size of breeding males in each species, and that between breeding males and the minimum size of breeding females. InA. perideraion both of these differences were small, so pairs could be formed quickly by residents after mate loss. On the contrary, inA. clarkii andA. frenatus, either or both differences were large and it would take a longer time to form a pair after mate loss. Differences in mobility affected the patterns of pair formation, and then the size composition of members in breeding groups.  相似文献

Abstract. Whale carcasses, sunken wood, and cold seeps provide organically enriched oases in the food‐limited deep‐sea benthos. At three such enriched habitats in Monterey Bay, CA, at a depth of nearly 3000 m, we observed pycnogonids (sea spiders) of at least two species, Colossendeis gigas and C. japonica, feeding on sea anemones that were commonly found there. Submersible remotely operated vehicles provided direct observations of feeding, as well as high definition video and photographic images. We recorded the co‐occurrence of both pycnogonids and prey anemones during ten of 12 visits during 2002–2006. Anemones and pycnogonids were conspicuously more abundant at these oases than in the surrounding benthos. The sedentary anemone Anthosactis pearseae was attached directly to whalebones while the pom‐pom anemone, Liponema brevicornis, was found resting on soft sediment, rolling in benthic currents, or accumulating where these currents were disrupted by topography, as at whale falls, wood falls, and clam fields. Both pycnogonid species were observed feeding on these anemones, either as predators or as micropredators.  相似文献

The antigenicities of external mucus from the sea anemones Stoichactis haddoni, Radianthus ritteri and Gyrostoma hertwigi and from the coral Trachyphyllia geoffroyi were compared. Marked differences were found between species but not within species. The differences suggested that mucus composition might be species specific, and hence that it might be one of the factors used by sea anemones and corals in the recognition of foreign anthozoan species.  相似文献

The species composition of anemonefishes (Amphiprioninae) and host sea anemones (Actiniaria: Actiniidae, Stichodactylidae) from the Con Son Islands is given for the first time. The investigations carried out in archipelago waters revealed four species of the anemonefishes associated with four species of the host sea anemones: Amphiprion freanatus in the symbiosis with sea anemone Entacmaea quadricolor (Actiniidae), A. perideraion with sea anemone Heteractis magnifica (Stichodactylidae), A. sandaracinos with sea anemone Stichodactyla mertensii (Stichodactylidae), and A. polymnus with sea anemone S. haddoni. The possibility of larval carrying in one more species of anemonefishes, i.e., A. clarkii, into the water area of the Con Son Islands from the nearby regions of the South China Sea is discussed. The view on the probable revealing of this species in the investigated region in the future is expressed.  相似文献

This is the first record of a platyctenid ctenophore in the eastern Atlantic. The teleost fishesPomatoschistus pictus, Vaneaugobius canariensis, Chromogobius sp.,Nerophis ophidion, Hippocampus hippocampus, Acanthocybium solandri, Sphyraena viridensis andSphyraena barracuda are recorded from Madeira for the first time. The presence of the sea-hareAplysia dactylomela at Madeira is confirmed; the species has increased tremendously in abundance in the last four years. The crocodile fishGrammoplites gruveli can occasionally be found in the mantle cavity of cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) sold at the fish market of Funchal, but does not originate from Madeiran waters. An analysis of 100 new records from the coastal fauna of Madeira shows that, while predominantly of lusitanian, mediterranean and mauritanian affinity, Madeira’s shallow water fauna contains a large component of tropical species.  相似文献

Sea anemones are rich in biologically active polypeptides such as toxins and protease inhibitors. These polypeptides have so far been isolated from whole bodies, tentacles or secreted mucus. Recently, two novel peptide toxins with crab lethality have been isolated from acrorhagi (specialized aggressive organs elaborated by only certain species of sea anemones belonging to the family Actiniidae) of Actinia equina. This prompted us to survey biologically active polypeptides in the acrorhagi of two species of sea anemones, Anthopleura aff. xanthogrammica and Anthopleura fuscoviridis. No potent crab lethality was displayed by the acrorhagial extracts of both species. However, significantly high protease inhibitory activity was instead detected in the acrorhagial extracts of the two species and also in that of A. equina. From the acrorhagi of A. equina, A. aff. xanthogrammica and A. fuscoviridis, one (AEAPI), one (AXAPI) and two (AFAPI-I and AFAPI-III) protease inhibitors were isolated, respectively. The complete amino acid sequences of the four inhibitors were elucidated by N-terminal sequencing and sequencing of the C-terminal peptide fragment produced upon asparaginylendopeptidase digestion. The determined amino acid sequences revealed that all the four inhibitors are new members of the Kunitz-type protease inhibitor family.  相似文献

Published records, original data from recent field work on all of the islands of the Azores (NE Atlantic), and a revision of the entire mollusc collection deposited in the Department of Biology of the University of the Azores (DBUA) were used to compile a checklist of the shallow-water Polyplacophora of the Azores. Lepidochitona cf. canariensis and Tonicella rubra are reported for the first time for this archipelago, increasing the recorded Azorean fauna to seven species.  相似文献

The venomous sea anemone Phyllodiscus semoni causes cases of severe stinging. We isolated Phyllodiscus semoni toxin 20A (PsTX-20A), a hemolytic and lethal polypeptide (20 kDa), from the nematocyst venom of this species for the first time. Furthermore, we sequenced the cDNA encoding PsTX-20A. The deduced amino acid sequence of PsTX-20A showed that this toxin was a new member of the actinoporin family, which consists of several cytolytic polypeptides originating from sea anemones. PsTX-20A showed lethal toxicity to the shrimp Palaemon paucidens when administered via intraperitoneal injection (LD50, 50 μg/kg) and hemolytic activity toward 0.8% sheep red blood cells (ED50, 80 ng/ml).  相似文献
