We evaluated (1) the longitudinal pattern of stream chemistry and (2) the effects of the riparian zone on this longitudinal pattern for nitrate (NO3 ), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total dissolved iron (Fe). We selected two small watersheds; the “southern watershed” had an extending riparian wetland and the “northern watershed” had a narrow riparian area. Stream NO3 concentrations decreased from the spring to outlet of both watersheds. In the southern watershed, stream DOC concentration decreased from the spring to midstream and then increased to the outlet. Stream Fe concentration in the southern watershed longitudinally increased. On the other hand, the northern watershed exhibited no longitudinal pattern for DOC and Fe concentrations. In both watersheds, while NO3 concentrations in the soil and ground water were lower than those in the stream waters, DOC and Fe concentrations exhibited the opposite patterns. The longitudinal decreases of NO3 concentrations in both streams and increase of stream Fe in the southern watershed mainly resulted from the inflow of the soil and ground water to the stream. The decrease in stream DOC from the spring to midstream in the southern watershed was due to the deep groundwater having low DOC, while the subsequent increase to the surrounding soil and ground water. Moreover, considerations of stream solute flow with soil and ground water chemistry suggested other mechanisms adding NO3 and removing/diluting DOC and Fe, especially for the northern watershed; coexistence of oxidizing and reducing conditions in the riparian zone might control the longitudinal concentration change in the stream water chemistry.  相似文献

Nitrate, ammonium, dissolved organic N, and dissolved oxygen were measured in stream water and shallow groundwater in the riparian zones of two tropical watersheds with different soils and geomorphology. At both sites, concentrations of dissolved inorganic N (DIN; NH4 +- and NO3 -N) were low in stream water (< 110 ug/L). Markedly different patterns in DIN were observed in groundwater collected at the two sites. At the first site (Icacos watershed), DIN in upslope groundwater was dominated by NO3 -N (550 ug/L) and oxygen concentrations were high (5.2 mg/L). As groundwater moved through the floodplain and to the stream, DIN shifted to dominance by NH4 +-N (200–700 ug/L) and groundwater was often anoxic. At the second site (Bisley watershed), average concentrations of total dissolved nitrogen were considerably lower (300 ug/L) than at Icacos (600 ug/L), and the dominant form of nitrogen was DON rather than inorganic N. Concentrations of NH4 + and NO3 were similar throughout the riparian zone at Bisley, but concentrations of DON declined from upslope wells to stream water. Differences in speciation and concentration of nitrogen in groundwater collected at the two sites appear to be controlled by differences in redox conditions and accessibility of dissolved N to plant roots, which are themselves the result of geomorphological differences between the two watersheds. At the Icacos site, a deep layer of coarse sand conducts subsurface water to the stream below the rooting zone of riparian vegetation and through zones of strong horizontal redox zonation. At the Bisley site, infiltration is impeded by dense clays and saturated flow passes through the variably oxidized rooting zone. At both sites, hydrologic export of nitrogen is controlled by intense biotic activity in the riparian zone. However, geomorphology appears to strongly modify the importance of specific biotic components.  相似文献

Nitrate transformation and water movement in a wetland area   总被引:6,自引:1,他引:5
The NO3 transformation capacity of a riparian zone at Rabis stream, Denmark, was investigated for a period of 2 years. The riparian zone of 15–25 m received NO3 -containing groundwater from the adjoining agricultural areas. The water flows as surface runoff along the surface of the wetland and in the root zone towards the stream. Changes in water chemistry, water balance and mass transport were investigated. The riparian zone acted as a buffer zone for NO3 , PO4 3– and dissolved Fe2+. The NO3 -transformation capacity of the wetland was about 400 kg N ha–1 y–1, but varied seasonally. A simple rearrangement of drain systems in wetland areas can probably reduce the NO3 content of Danish surface waters by 20 000–50 000 t N y–1.  相似文献

Long-term data on nitrogen chemistry of streams draining Konza Prairie Biological Station (Konza), Kansas were analyzed to assess spatial and temporal patterns and examine the influence of agricultural activity on these patterns. Upland watersheds of Konza are predominantly tallgrass prairies, but agricultural fields and riparian forests border the lower reaches of the streams. We have up to 11 years of data in the relatively pristine upland reaches and 4 years of data on wells and downstream reaches influenced by fertilized croplands. Seasonal and spatial patterns in total nitrogen (TN) concentrations were driven largely by changes in the nitrate (NO3 ) concentrations. A gradient of increasing NO3 concentrations occurred from pristine upland stream reaches to the more agriculturally-influenced lowland reaches. Nitrate concentrations varied seasonally and were negatively correlated with discharge in areas influenced by row-crop agriculture (p = 0.007). The NO3 concentrations of stream water in lowland reaches were lowest during times of high precipitation, when the relative influence of groundwater drainage is minimal and water in the channel is primarily derived from upland prairie reaches. The groundwater from cropland increased stream NO3 concentrations about four-fold during low-discharge periods, even though significant riparian forest corridors existed along most of the lower stream channel. The minimum NO3 concentrations in the agriculturally influenced reaches were greater than at any time in prairie reaches. Analysis of data before and after introduction of bison to four prairie watersheds revealed a 35% increase of TN concentrations (p < 0.05) in the stream water channels after the introduction of bison. These data suggest that natural processes such as bison grazing, variable discharge, and localized input of groundwater lead to variation in NO3 concentrations less than 100-fold in prairie streams. Row-crop agriculture can increase NO3 concentrations well over 100-fold relative to pristine systems, and the influence of this land use process over space and time overrides natural processes.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and NO3 are important forms of C and N in stream water. Hypotheses concerning relationships between DOC and NO3 concentrations have been proposed, but there are no reports demonstrating a relationship between them in stream water. We observed 35 natural streams in the Lake Biwa watershed, central Japan, and found an inverse relationship between DOC and NO3 concentrations. This relationship was also found in observations of their seasonal variations in the Lake Biwa watershed. Moreover, this relationship was also found to apply to watersheds in other regions in Japan. These results suggest that forest biogeochemical processes which control DOC and NO3 concentrations in Japanese streams are closely related. Excess N availability together with a C (energy) deficit in a soil environment may explain this relationship. DOC and NO3 concentrations in streams will thus be a useful index indicating C and N availability in catchments.  相似文献

Water quality in Upper Sandy Creek, a headwater stream for the Cape Fear River in the North Carolina Piedmont, is impaired due to high N and P concentrations, sediment load, and coliform bacteria. The creek and floodplain ecosystem had become dysfunctional due to the effects of altered storm water delivery following urban watershed development where the impervious surface reached nearly 30% in some sub-watersheds. At Duke University, an 8-ha Stream and Wetland Assessment Management Park (SWAMP) was created in the lower portion of the watershed to assess the cumulative effect of restoring multiple portions of stream and former adjacent wetlands, with specific goals of quantifying water quality improvements. To accomplish these goals, a three-phase stream/riparian floodplain restoration (600 m), storm water reservoir/wetland complex (1.6 ha) along with a surface flow treatment wetland (0.5 ha) was ecologically designed to increase the stream wetland connection, and restore groundwater wetland hydrology. The multi-phased restoration of Sandy Creek and adjacent wetlands resulted in functioning riparian hydrology, which reduced downstream water pulses, nutrients, coliform bacteria, sediment, and stream erosion. Storm water event nutrient budgets indicated a substantial attenuation of N and P within the SWAMP project. Most notably, (NO2 + NO3)-N loads were reduced by 64% and P loads were reduced by 28%. Sediment retention in the stormwater reservoir and riparian wetlands showed accretion rates of 1.8 cm year−1 and 1.1 cm year−1, respectively. Sediment retention totaled nearly 500 MT year−1.  相似文献

Seasonal variability of dissolved organic carbon ina Mediterranean stream   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The seasonal variability of dissolved organic carbon(DOC) flux in a Mediterranean stream subjected todischarges of wide range of intensities and variabledry period was studied as a function of the hydrologicconditions, and the relationship between surface andsubsurface (hyporheic and groundwater) DOCconcentration. DOC concentration in stream water(2.6 mg l–1 ±1.5 SD) was higher thangroundwater (1.3 mg l–1 ± 1.2 SD) and lower thanhyporheic water (3.8 mg l–1 ±1.7 SD),suggesting that, at baseflow, stream DOC concentrationincreases when groundwater discharges through thehyporheic zone. Storms contributed to 39% of annualwater export and to 52% of the total annual DOCexport (220 kg km–2). A positive relationship wasobserved between Discharge (Q) and stream DOCconcentration. Discharge explained only 40% of theannual variance in stream DOC, but explained up to93% of the variance within floods. The rate of streamDOC changes with discharge change during storms (dDOC/dQ), ranged between 0 and 0.0045 C mgl–1 s l–1, with minimum values during Springand Summer, and maxima values in Fall and Winter. These dynamics suggest that storm inputs ofterrigenous DOC vary between seasons. During floods inthe dormant season, DOC recession curves were alwayssteeper than discharge decline, suggesting shortflushing of DOC from the leaching of fresh detritusstored in the riparian zone.  相似文献

The 15N composition of the dominant form of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) was determined in upland groundwater, riparian groundwater, and stream water of the Barro Branco catchment, Amazônas, Brazil. The 15N composition of organic nitrogen in riparian and upland leaf litter was also determined. The data for these waters could be divided into three groups: upland groundwater DIN predominately composed of NO3 with 15N values averaging 6.25 ± 0.9 riparian groundwater DIN primarily composed of NH4 + with 15N values averaging 9.17 ± 1.0 and stream water DIN predominately composed of NO3 with 15N values averaging 4.52 ± 0.8 Nitrate samples taken from the stream source and from the stream adjacent to the groundwater transects showed a downstream increase in 15N from 1.0to 4.5 Leaf litter samples averaged 3.5 ± 1.2The observed patterns in isotopic composition, together with previously observed inorganic nitrogen species and concentration shifts between upland, riparian and stream waters, suggest that groundwater DIN is not the primary source of DIN to the stream. Instead, the isotopic data suggest that remineralization of organic nitrogen within the stream itself may be a major source of stream DIN, and that the majority of DIN entering the stream via groundwater flowpaths is removed at the riparian-stream interface.  相似文献

In regions with airborne contaminants and large snowpacks, there is concern over the impact that snowmelt chemical pulses — periods of sharp increase in meltwater solute concentration — could have on aquatic resources during spring runoff. A major variable in determining such an effect is the flow path of snowmelt solutes to the stream or lake. From December 1988, to late April 1989, the quality and quantity of precipitation, snowmelt, soil solution and streamwater were measured in a 176-ha gauged watershed on the south shore of Lake Superior. The main objectives were to (1) examine the change in flow path meltwaters take to the stream during distinct winter and spring hydrologic periods, (2) quantify ecosystem-level ion budgets prior to, during, and following snowmelt, and (3) examine if streamwater chemistry might be a sensitive indicator of change in ecosystem flow paths. Prior to peak snowmelt, groundwater made up 80% of stream discharge. During peak snowmelt, the groundwater level rose to the soil surface resulting in lateral water movement through near-surface macropores and as overland flow. Near the end of snowmelt, melt-waters exerted a piston action on deeper soil solution again increasing its relative contribution to streamwater discharge. Net groundwater drawdown during the study resulted in streamwater discharge about equal to precipitation inputs. Unfrozen soils and brief mid-winter thaws resulted in steady snowmelt throughout early and mid-winter. The snowpack lost > 50% of most ions prior to the period of major snowmelt and high stream discharge in late March and early April. Snowmelt and streamwater NO3 and NH4 pulses occurred before the period of overland flow and peak streamwater discharge (April 4–24). During overland flow, stream discharge of total N, P, DOC, and AI peaked. Nutrient budgets computed for distinct hydrologic periods were much more helpful in explaining ecosystem pathways and processes than were changes in solute concentration. For the study period, watershed base cation (CB) discharge was 23 times input and SO4 2– discharge exceeded input by 42%. H+ was the most strongly conserved ion with output < 0.2% of input. Also conserved were NH4 + with only 1.4% of input leaving the ecosystem and NO3 with output equal to 9.4% of input.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were determined over 3 years in headwater streams draining two adjacent catchments. The catchments are currently under different land use; pasture/grazing vs plantation forestry. The objectives of the work were to quantify C and nutrient export from these landuses and elucidate the factors regulating export. In both catchments, stream water dissolved inorganic nutrient concentrations exhibited strong seasonal variations. Concentrations were highest during runoff events in late summer and autumn and rapidly declined as discharge increased during winter and spring. The annual variation of stream water N and P concentrations indicated that these nutrients accumulated in the catchments during dry summer periods and were flushed to the streams during autumn storm events. By contrast, stream water DOC concentrations did not exhibit seasonal variation. Higher DOC and NO3 concentrations were observed in the stream of the forest catchment, reflecting greater input and subsequent breakdown of leaf-litter in the forest catchment. Annual export of DOC was lower from the forested catchment due to the reduced discharge from this catchment. In contrast however, annual export of nitrate was higher from the forest catchment suggesting that there was an additional NO3 source or reduction of a NO3 sink. We hypothesize that the denitrification capacity of the forested catchment has been significantly reduced as a consequence of increased evapotranspiration and subsequent decrease in streamflow and associated reduction in the near stream saturated area.  相似文献

A discrepancy between plant demand and soil supply of nitrogen (N) has been observed in early successional stages of riparian vegetation in interior Alaska. We hypothesized that a hydrologically mediated N supply serves as a mechanism to balance this apparent deficiency of plant N supply. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a tracer experiment and measured the activity of nitrate reductase (NRA) over the summer on the early successional floodplain of the Tanana River in interior Alaska. Isotopic data showed that river-/groundwater was an important source of plant water and that hyporheic N could be absorbed by early successional species. Plant NRA generally increased as the growing season progressed, and NO 3 ? -N availability increased. Both Salix interior Rowlee and Populus balsamifera L. used NO 3 ? -N, and the timing of plant NRA relative to river discharge chemistry and soil NO 3 ? -N concentrations, strongly suggest that plant uptake of NO 3 ? -N is coupled to fluvial dynamics. Moreover, this physiological function helps explain the apparent discrepancy between N mineralization and productivity in these riparian ecosystems, and demonstrates that plant N availability in these riparian stands is under significant hydrological control.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon and its utilization in a riverine wetland ecosystem   总被引:11,自引:2,他引:9
Variations in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations of surface waters and subsurface interstitial groundwater of riparian and wetland soils to 1.2 m depth were evaluated in a riverine wetland ecosystem over one year. DOC was monitored at seven sites within the wetland pond, two sites on the inflow stream, and one site on the outflow stream. Surface concentrations in the inflow stream ranged from 0.74 to 11.6 mg C L–1 and those of the outflow from 2.1 to 8.0 mg C L–1 Average DOC from stream floodplain hydrosoils (3.1 to 32.1 mg C L–1 was greater than DOC from the sediments below the stream channel (1.6 to 6.8 mg C L–1 Surface DOC within the wetland varied seasonally, with greatest fluctuations in concentrations through the summer and autumn (range 4.8 to 32.6 mg C L–1 ) during intensive macrophyte growth and bacterial production. DOC was less variable during the winter months (1.7 to 3.3 mg C L–1 Within the wetland pond, average DOC concentrations (7.1 to 48.2 mg C L–1) in the subsurface waters were significantly greater (p < 0.05) than average surface concentrations. The microbial availability of surface and subsurface DOC to bacteria was evaluated from losses of DOC by wetland bacteria grown on the DOC. Bacterial growth efficiencies ranged from 5 to 20% and were negatively correlated to the percentage of DOC removed by bacteria (r2=0.93). Throughout the ecosystem, DOC concentrations were greatest in the subsurface waters, but at most depths this DOC was a less suitable substrate than surface DOC for utilization by bacteria.  相似文献

Decreases in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved oxygen (DO) with increasing depth below the groundwater table are often considered as evidence for aerobic respiration; however, they may reflect mixing of infiltrating water and groundwater. We found that groundwater DOC concentration was on average 0.3 mg C l?1 higher and DO concentration 1.5 mg O2 l?1 lower at recharge sites replenished with stormwater than at reference sites fed by direct infiltration of rain water from the land surface. Groundwater DOC increased and DO decreased with increasing vadose zone thickness (VZT) at both recharge and reference sites. There was no significant interaction between the effects of stormwater infiltration and VZT. Vertical changes in DOC and DO below the groundwater table at recharge sites could account for by simple mixing of infiltrating stormwater and groundwater. Moreover, aquifer sediment respiration (SR) was not significantly higher at recharge sites than at reference sites. However, slow filtration column experiments showed that SR increased significantly with an increasing supply of easily biodegradable DOC. We conclude that the observed reduction in DOC below the groundwater table at recharge sites was essentially due to water mixing rather than biological uptake because of the low biodegradability of the DOC and the short transit time of stormwater in the upper layers of groundwater. Our results highlight the need to distinguish between the effect of hydrological and biological processes on DOC and DO patterns below the groundwater before conclusions are made on the efficiency of groundwater in degrading surface-derived DOC.  相似文献

In forests of the humid subtropics of China, chronically elevated nitrogen (N) deposition, predominantly as ammonium (NH4+), causes significant nitrate (NO3?) leaching from well‐drained acid forest soils on hill slopes (HS), whereas significant retention of NO3? occurs in near‐stream environments (groundwater discharge zones, GDZ). To aid our understanding of N transformations on the catchment level, we studied spatial and temporal variabilities of concentration and natural abundance (δ15N and δ18O) of nitrate (NO3?) in soil pore water along a hydrological continuum in the N‐saturated Tieshanping (TSP) catchment, southwest China. Our data show that effective removal of atmogenic NH4+ and production of NO3? in soils on HS were associated with a significant decrease in δ15N‐NO3?, suggesting efficient nitrification despite low soil pH. The concentration of NO3? declined sharply along the hydrological flow path in the GDZ. This decline was associated with a significant increase in both δ15N and δ18O of residual NO3?, providing evidence that the GDZ acts as an N sink due to denitrification. The observed apparent 15N enrichment factor (ε) of NO3? of about ?5‰ in the GDZ is similar to values previously reported for efficient denitrification in riparian and groundwater systems. Episode studies in the summers of 2009, 2010 and 2013 revealed that the spatial pattern of δ15N and δ18O‐NO3? in soil water was remarkably similar from year to year. The importance of denitrification as a major N sink was also seen at the catchment scale, as largest δ15N‐NO3? values in stream water were observed at lowest discharge, confirming the importance of the relatively small GDZ for N removal under base flow conditions. This study, explicitly recognizing hydrologically connected landscape elements, reveals an overlooked but robust N sink in N‐saturated, subtropical forests with important implications for regional N budgets.  相似文献

Spatial variations in soil processes regulating mineral N losses to streams were studied in a small watershed near Toronto, Ontario. Annual net N mineralization in the 0–8 cm soil was measured in adjacent upland and riparian forest stands using in situ soil incubations from April 1985 to 1987. Mean annual rates of soil N mineralization and nitrification were higher in a maple soil (93.8 and 87.0 kg.ha–1) than in a pine soil (23.3 and 8.2 kg.ha–1 ). Very low mean rates of mineralization (3.3 kg.ha–1) and nitrification (3.4 kg.ha–1) were found in a riparian hemlock stand. Average NO3-N concentrations in soil solutions were 0.3–1.0 mg.L–1 in the maple stand and >0.06mg.L–1 in the pine stand. Concentrations of NO3–N in shallow ground water and stream water were 3–4× greater in a maple subwatershed than in a pine subwatershed. Rapid N uptake by vegetation was an important mechanism reducing solution losses of NO3–N in the maple stand. Low rates of nitrification were mainly responsible for negligible NO3–N solution losses in the pine stand.  相似文献

Plant growth in boreal forests is generally considered to be predominantly nitrogen (N) limited, but forested groundwater discharge areas may be exceptions. In this study, we conducted tests to determine whether highly productive forested groundwater discharge areas generally differ from adjacent groundwater recharge areas in terms of humus chemistry and the availability of phosphorus (P) and N to plants. We investigated six forested sites, divided into groundwater discharge and adjacent groundwater recharge areas, in northern Sweden. The humus layers of the forested groundwater discharge areas were clearly distinguished from the adjacent groundwater recharge areas by having higher acid-digestible calcium (Ca) and/or aluminium (Al) and iron (Fe) content and higher organic P and N content. Soil solution inorganic N (NH4 + and NO3 ) and pH were higher in the groundwater discharge areas than in the groundwater recharge areas. The organic P content showed a positive linear relationship to the Al and Fe content in the humus layer, indicating that organic P is associated with Al and Fe compounds in the humus. A plant bioassay using humus substrate from one groundwater discharge area and the adjacent groundwater recharge area found that plants grown in groundwater discharge area humus (with a high P-fixation capacity) increased their biomass upon P fertilization, whereas no growth response was found for N additions. By contrast, plants grown in humus from the groundwater recharge area did not respond to added P unless N was added too. This study suggests that groundwater discharge can affect the nutrient availability of N and P both directly, via increased P fixation due to the redistribution of Al and Fe, and indirectly, via the inflow of groundwater high in Ca and alkalinity, maintaining a high pH in the humus layer that favors in situ N turnover processes. Increasing nitrogen (N) deposition in subtropical forests in south China causes N saturation, associated with significant nitrate (NO3?) leaching. Strong N attenuation may occur in groundwater discharge zones hydrologically connected to well‐drained hillslopes, as has been shown for the subtropical headwater catchment “TieShanPing”, where dual NO3? isotopes indicated that groundwater discharge zones act as an important N sink and hotspot for denitrification. Here, we present a regional study reporting inorganic N fluxes over two years together with dual NO3? isotope signatures obtained in two summer campaigns from seven forested catchments in China, representing a gradient in climate and atmospheric N input. In all catchments, fluxes of dissolved inorganic N indicated efficient conversion of NH4+ to NO3? on well‐drained hillslopes, and subsequent interflow of NO3? over the argic B‐horizons to groundwater discharge zones. Depletion of 15N‐ and 18O–NO3? on hillslopes suggested nitrification as the main source of NO3?. In all catchments, except one of the northern sites, which had low N deposition rates, NO3? attenuation by denitrification occurred in groundwater discharge zones, as indicated by simultaneous 15N and 18O enrichment in residual NO3?. By contrast to the southern sites, the northern catchments lack continuous and well‐developed groundwater discharge zones, explaining less efficient N removal. Using a model based on 15NO3? signatures, we estimated denitrification fluxes from 2.4 to 21.7 kg N ha?1 year?1 for the southern sites, accounting for more than half of the observed N removal. Across the southern catchments, estimated denitrification scaled proportionally with N deposition. Together, this indicates that N removal by denitrification is an important component of the N budget of southern Chinese forests and that natural NO3? attenuation may increase with increasing N input, thus partly counteracting further aggravation of N contamination of surface waters in the region.  相似文献

Although tropical wet forests play an important role in the global carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles, little is known about the origin, composition, and fate of dissolved organic C (DOC) and N (DON) in these ecosystems. We quantified and characterized fluxes of DOC, DON, and dissolved inorganic N (DIN) in throughfall, litter leachate, and soil solution of an old-growth tropical wet forest to assess their contribution to C stabilization (DOC) and to N export (DON and DIN) from this ecosystem. We found that the forest canopy was a major source of DOC (232 kg C ha–1 y–1). Dissolved organic C fluxes decreased with soil depth from 277 kg C ha–1 y–1 below the litter layer to around 50 kg C kg C ha–1 y–1 between 0.75 and 3.5m depth. Laboratory experiments to quantify biodegradable DOC and DON and to estimate the DOC sorption capacity of the soil, combined with chemical analyses of DOC, revealed that sorption was the dominant process controlling the observed DOC profiles in the soil. This sorption of DOC by the soil matrix has probably led to large soil organic C stores, especially below the rooting zone. Dissolved N fluxes in all strata were dominated by mineral N (mainly NO3). The dominance of NO3 relative to the total amount nitrate of N leaching from the soil shows that NO3 is dominant not only in forest ecosystems receiving large anthropogenic nitrogen inputs but also in this old-growth forest ecosystem, which is not N-limited.  相似文献

Nitrate (NO3 ?) dynamics in urban streams differ from many natural streams due to stormwater runoff, sewage inputs, decreased groundwater discharge, often limited hyporheic exchange, increased primary productivity, and limited carbon input. We investigated NO3 ? dynamics in a first-order urban stream in Syracuse, NY, which has urbanized headwaters and a geomorphologically natural downstream section. Twice-monthly water sampling, NO3 ? injection tests, NO3 ? isotopic analysis, filamentous algae mat density, and riparian shading were used to identify processes regulating NO3 ? dynamics in the stream over a 12-month period. The urban headwater reach had low NO3 ? (0.006–0.2 mg N/L) in the spring through fall, with a minimum uptake length of 900 m, no canopy cover, and high algae mat density. The downstream natural reach (100% canopy cover during the summer and low algae mat density) had nitrate concentrations between 0.6 and 1.2 mg N/L from winter to summer, which decreased during autumn leaf-off. In the urban reach, autotrophic uptake by filamentous green algae is a major NO3 ? sink in summer. In the natural reach, the addition of organic matter to the stream at leaf-off led to a decrease in NO3 ? concentration followed by an increase in NO3 ? concentration in winter as gross primary productivity decreased. This study shows that the balance between autotrophy and heterotrophy in urban streams is variable and depends on an interplay of drivers such as temperature, light, and carbon inputs that are mediated by the riparian ecosystem.  相似文献
