Infants from three populations of squirel monkeys with different pelage, behaviour patterns and physiological patterns emitted two forms of isolation peeps. Offspring from Peruvian and Bolivian stock produced isolation peeps previously described as belonging to ‘Roman Arch’ monkeys, whereas the Guyanese population produced isolation peeps previously described as belonging to ‘Gothic Arch’ monkeys. Playbacks of isolation peeps from, infants of each population to groups of adult monkeys revealed a population specificity in the response to infant calls. Peruvian, and Bolivian adults responded with increased activity, decreased huddling and increased approach to the speaker only when isolation peeps of Peruvian and Bolivian infants were broadcast. Guyanese adult monkeys showed similar responses to the isolation peeps of Guyanese infants. These are the first reported data indicating that the long-recognized vocal differences in squirrel monkey populations are responded to differentially. The results also support a major taxonomic division between the Gothic Arch and Roman Arch populations with the other morphological and physiological differences within these populations reflecting secondary divisions.  相似文献

Compared to humans, non-human primates have very little control over their vocal production. Nonetheless, some primates produce various call combinations, which may partially offset their lack of acoustic flexibility. A relevant example is male Campbell''s monkeys (Cercopithecus campbelli), which give one call type (‘Krak’) to leopards, while the suffixed version of the same call stem (‘Krak-oo’) is given to unspecific danger. To test whether recipients attend to this suffixation pattern, we carried out a playback experiment in which we broadcast naturally and artificially modified suffixed and unsuffixed ‘Krak’ calls of male Campbell''s monkeys to 42 wild groups of Diana monkeys (Cercopithecus diana diana). The two species form mixed-species groups and respond to each other''s vocalizations. We analysed the vocal response of male and female Diana monkeys and overall found significantly stronger vocal responses to unsuffixed (leopard) than suffixed (unspecific danger) calls. Although the acoustic structure of the ‘Krak’ stem of the calls has some additional effects, subject responses were mainly determined by the presence or the absence of the suffix. This study indicates that suffixation is an evolved function in primate communication in contexts where adaptive responses are particularly important.  相似文献

Breeding colonies of squirrel monkeys in zoos are often a mix of Saimiri taxa, which leads to the possibility of hybridization, loss of classification features, and possible reduction of fertility among hybrids. Two zoos, Potawatomi and Brookfield, were used to assess chromosomal composition of colonies. Chromosomes were analyzed from lymphocyte cultures and animals were classified into cytogenetic types. At both zoos there was a predominance of Peruvian types, but hybrids (Peruvian/Colombian) at Potawatomi and (Peruvian/Colombian and Peruvian/Guyanan) at Brookfield were also identified. Analysis of the Brookfield lineage (three generations) revealed karyotypic Peruvians derived from hybrid parents. The Gothic versus Roman arch of periocular white hair shows intermediate or quite variable expression in hybrids and offspring derived from hybrids. Given the relative length of both pericentric inversions and the segments distal to each, a detectable reduction in fertility is predicted when compared with similar-sized inversions in humans. Somatic segregation of inversion heterozygotes, which would reconstitute homozygosity and elevate fertility, was not detected.  相似文献

A role for inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP(3)) as a second messenger during olfactory transduction has been postulated in both vertebrates and invertebrates. However, given the absence of either suitable pharmacological reagents or mutant alleles specific for the IP(3) signaling pathway, an unequivocal demonstration of IP(3) function in olfaction has not been possible. Here we have investigated the role of a well-established cellular target of IP(3)-the IP(3) receptor (IP(3)R)-in olfactory transduction in Drosophila. For this purpose we tested existing viable combinations of IP(3)R mutant alleles, as well as a newly generated set of viable itpr alleles, for olfactory function. In all of the viable allelic combinations primary olfactory responses were found to be normal. However, a subset of itpr alleles (including a null allele) exhibit faster recovery after a strong pulse of odor, indicating that the IP(3)R is required for maintenance of olfactory adaptation. Interestingly, this defect in adaptation is dominant for two of the alleles tested, suggesting that the mechanism of adaptation is sensitive to levels of the IP(3)R.  相似文献

The ability to generate new meaning by rearranging combinations of meaningless sounds is a fundamental component of language. Although animal vocalizations often comprise combinations of meaningless acoustic elements, evidence that rearranging such combinations generates functionally distinct meaning is lacking. Here, we provide evidence for this basic ability in calls of the chestnut-crowned babbler (Pomatostomus ruficeps), a highly cooperative bird of the Australian arid zone. Using acoustic analyses, natural observations, and a series of controlled playback experiments, we demonstrate that this species uses the same acoustic elements (A and B) in different arrangements (AB or BAB) to create two functionally distinct vocalizations. Specifically, the addition or omission of a contextually meaningless acoustic element at a single position generates a phoneme-like contrast that is sufficient to distinguish the meaning between the two calls. Our results indicate that the capacity to rearrange meaningless sounds in order to create new signals occurs outside of humans. We suggest that phonemic contrasts represent a rudimentary form of phoneme structure and a potential early step towards the generative phonemic system of human language.  相似文献

According to most accounts, alarm calling in non-human primates is a biologically hardwired behaviour with signallers having little control over the acoustic structure of their calls. In this study, we compared the alarm calling behaviour of two adjacent populations of Diana monkeys at Taï forest (Ivory Coast) and Tiwai Island (Sierra Leone), which differ significantly in predation pressure. At Taï, monkeys regularly interact with two major predators, crowned eagles and leopards, while at Tiwai, monkeys are only hunted by crowned eagles. We monitored the alarm call responses of adult male Diana monkeys to acoustic predator models. We found no site-specific differences in the types of calls given to eagles, leopards and general disturbances, but there were consistent differences in how callers assembled calls into sequences. At Tiwai, males responded to leopards and general disturbances in the same way, while at Taï, males discriminated by giving call sequences that differed in the number of component calls. Responses to eagles were identical at both sites. We concluded that Diana monkeys are predisposed to use their repertoire in context-specific ways, but that ontogenetic experience determines how individual calls are assembled into meaningful sequences.  相似文献

Capability of monkeys for identification of quantitative signs has been studied at recognition and comparison of two-and three-dimensional objects in quantities from 1 to 8. The work was carried out on two species of the lower monkeys: rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatto) and brown capuchins (Cebus apella). The studied representatives of the monkeys have been established to be able to differentiate planar images and casts of cherries in various quantity combinations from 1 to 8 and to identify identical signs of visual stimuli. The obtained data indicate the ability of monkeys to abstract and to form preverbal notions of quantitative signs of objects.  相似文献

Complex behavior forms and the ability of monkeys to recognize and to compare by identity the two-dimensional images and three-dimensional objects of various colors in the amount from 5 to 9 were studied. The study was carried out on two species of the lower monkeys of different levels of phylogenetic development: on rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and on brown capuchins (Cebus apella). It has been established that the representatives of the studied monkey species are able to differentiate large counted multitudes of two-dimensional (images of squares) and three-dimensional (objects of round shape) stimuli of red, yellow, and green colors in different quantitative ratios—from 5 to 9 at solving modifications of task of the type “choice by the sample.” In the course of learning, species-related differences of the monkeys’ behavior are revealed. The brown capuchins managed solving all tasks and their combinations better than rhesus monkeys. The obtained data indicate the capability for recognition of counted multitudes (from 5 to 9) regardless of color of the stimuli and the existence of quantitative notions of the idea of “quantity” in the lower monkeys.  相似文献

Small animal computed tomography (CT) has poor intrinsic soft tissue contrast, limiting evaluation of intra-abdominal structures. Using standard intravascular-extracellular intravenous contrast (IE-IV) alone is theoretically limited by long acquisition times of traditional small animal scanners that may result in equilibration. We assessed whether a negative contrast strategy of enhancing normal tissue surrounding tumor, instead of the tumor itself, can visualize and quantify intraperitoneal (IP) cancer in a mouse model. Two and a half weeks after IP injection of Hey A8 cells, four groups of three animals each were administered serial dilutions of IV Fenestra LC (RES-IV), oral Gastroview, and IP Optiray 320. Another group of three animals was administered IV Optiray 320 (IE-IV), oral Gastroview, and IP Optiray 320 in successive combinations. Both groups were imaged by CT. Tumor and organ Hounsfield units were measured, and visualization was assessed. With increasing contrast amount, the Hounsfield unit of organs generally increased, whereas that of tumor remained essentially stable. The visualization of abdominal organs and tumor also generally increased with increasing contrast amount. Visualization of tumor and its margins adjacent to liver, spleen, and stomach was significantly better on administering RES-IV. However, for tumor adjacent to bladder, both IE-IV and RES-IV were equivalent. In vivo CT-derived tumor weights correlated highly with ex vivo tumor weights (r = 0.96, P < .0001, n = 15). Thus, CT using negative contrast enhancement strategy allows visualization and quantification of IP tumors. Such a strategy will also enable anatomic localization of functional signal for combination/molecular imaging.  相似文献

Inositol hexakisphosphate kinases (IP6Ks) have been increasingly studied as therapeutically interesting enzymes. IP6K isoform specific knock-outs have been used to successfully explore inositol pyrophosphate physiology and related pathologies. A pan-IP6K inhibitor, N2-(m-trifluorobenzyl)-N6-(p-nitrobenzyl) purine (TNP), has been used to confirm phenotypes observed in genetic knock-out experiments; however, it suffers by having modest potency and poor solubility making it difficult to handle for in vitro applications in the absence of DMSO. Moreover, TNP’s pan-IP6K inhibitory profile does not inform which IP6K isoform is responsible for which phenotypes. In this report we describe a series of purine-based isoform specific IP6K1 inhibitors. The lead compound was identified after multiple rounds of SAR and has been found to selectively inhibit IP6K1 over IP6K2 or IP6K3 using biochemical and biophysical approaches. It also boasts increased solubility and IP6K1 potency over TNP. These new compounds are useful tools for additional assay development and exploration of IP6K1 specific biology.  相似文献

A paleoparasitological study was carried out on 2 lead coffins recovered from the Roman site of Jaunay-Clan (near Poitiers, France). For the first time, this particular type of burial gave positive parasitological results, and eggs of the whipworm Trichuris trichiura were identified in 1 individual. In the present case, thanatomorphose associated with funerary practices may explain the scarcity of the recovered eggs. However, human whipworm has now been observed in 9 individuals dated to the Roman period. The very high frequency of Trichuris sp. eggs in Roman archaeological sites (up to 80%) suggests that fecal peril, hygiene, and waste management were problematic during this period. Finally, due to the fact that very few analyses have been conducted on human bodies dated to the Roman period, more analyses must be performed in the future to provide further information about diseases in the Roman world.  相似文献

Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl. (bottle gourd) is pantropic and displays large variation in fruit and seed shape. Two subspecies are currently recognized: the African L. siceraria ssp. siceraria and the Asian L. siceraria ssp. asiatica. The Asian type of bottle gourd belongs to the earliest domesticated plants in the Americas. In Europe, bottle gourd only appears with some frequency from the Roman period onwards. The paper is the study of ancient DNA (aDNA) and seed morphology of one almost complete bottle gourd fruit from the Roman site of Oedenburg/Biesheim–Kunheim, France (1st century a.d.), and from individual seed finds from the Roman vicus of Petinesca–Vorderberg, Switzerland (3rd century a.d.), both recovered from waterlogged layers. Width and length measurements of seeds show large variation. Based on the index of width to length, seeds from both sites differ significantly (p?<?0.0001 Mann–Whitney) suggesting that there were different variants present north of the Alps. Genetically, the bottle gourd fruit from Roman Oedenburg/Biesheim–Kunheim and one commercial cultivar L. siceraria cv. ‘Herkuleskeule’ are of Asian origin as identified by three Asian and African specific chloroplast markers. These results support an early and long-lasting presence of the Asian type of domestic bottle gourd in Europe. No chloroplast markers were found in the seeds from Petinesca–Vorderberg. However preserved nuclear high copy 5.8S rDNA fragments correctly matched to Cucurbitaceae, further supporting the evidence for preservation of DNA in waterlogged plant remains.  相似文献

Hearing and vocal communication in blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis) was studied within an ecological context. Field measurements of the acoustical characteristics of the blue monkey's natural habitat were conducted in the Kibale forest (Uganda) and in Kakamega forest (Kenya). Measurements of background noise levels indicated that vocal communication pitched in the 100–1000-Hz frequency band would be relatively unimpeded by disruptive background noises. Furthermore, measurements of the propagation rate of audio signals indicated that calls pitched in the 125–200-Hz region penetrated the forest with minimal decrement in amplitude. Tests of the blue monkey's acoustic sensitivyty and range of hearing were conducted in the laboratory with standard audiometric procedures. Hearing in the blue monkey was characterized by a U-shaped function, with maximum sensitivity of about 5 dB SPL spanning a four-octave range from 1 to 16 kHz. The hearing of blue monkeys was superior to human hearing for tones below 500 Hz and above 8 kHz in frequency. A comparative analysis of primate hearing indicated that the blue monkey was approximately 18 dB more sensitive to low-frequency tones than the comparably sized, semi-terrestrial rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). Furthermore, blue monkeys exhibit phonatory specializations for vocal production in this relatively unused, low-frequency band of 125–200 Hz. These specializations for low-frequency vocal production and low-frequency hearing collectively act to increase the effective distance of long-range acoustic communication in the forest canopy.  相似文献

The last decades evidenced auditory laterality in vertebrates, offering new important insights for the understanding of the origin of human language. Factors such as the social (e.g. specificity, familiarity) and emotional value of sounds have been proved to influence hemispheric specialization. However, little is known about the crossed effect of these two factors in animals. In addition, human-animal comparative studies, using the same methodology, are rare. In our study, we adapted the head turn paradigm, a widely used non invasive method, on 8–9-year-old schoolgirls and on adult female Campbell''s monkeys, by focusing on head and/or eye orientations in response to sound playbacks. We broadcast communicative signals (monkeys: calls, humans: speech) emitted by familiar individuals presenting distinct degrees of social value (female monkeys: conspecific group members vs heterospecific neighbours, human girls: from the same vs different classroom) and emotional value (monkeys: contact vs threat calls; humans: friendly vs aggressive intonation). We evidenced a crossed-categorical effect of social and emotional values in both species since only “negative” voices from same class/group members elicited a significant auditory laterality (Wilcoxon tests: monkeys, T = 0 p = 0.03; girls: T = 4.5 p = 0.03). Moreover, we found differences between species as a left and right hemisphere preference was found respectively in humans and monkeys. Furthermore while monkeys almost exclusively responded by turning their head, girls sometimes also just moved their eyes. This study supports theories defending differential roles played by the two hemispheres in primates'' auditory laterality and evidenced that more systematic species comparisons are needed before raising evolutionary scenario. Moreover, the choice of sound stimuli and behavioural measures in such studies should be the focus of careful attention.  相似文献

IP traceback is known to be one of the most effective measures to deter Internet attacks. Various techniques for IP traceback have been suggested. Among them, we focus on Probabilistic Packet Marking scheme (PPM) with tagging. We believe PPM is more advantageous than others because it does not generate additional network traffic and requires minimal protocol change. However, three parameters need to be optimized to make PPM practical under massively multiple attack paths: the number of packets to collect, the number of fragment combinations to recover the IP addresses, and the false positive error rate. Tagging is an effective way to reduce the number of combinations but it increases the false positive error rates when the number of routers in the attack paths grows. Other PPM-related techniques suggested in the past have similar problems. They improve one or two parameters at the expense of others, or they require additional data structures such as an upstream router map. In this paper, we propose a method that optimizes the three parameters at the same time and recovers original IPs quickly and correctly even in the presence of massive multiple attack paths. Our method does not need either a combinatorial process to recover IPs or additional information such as an upstream router map. Our result shows that our method recovers 95% of the original IPs correctly with no fragment combinations and with zero false positives. It needs to collect only 8N packets per router where N is the number of routers involved in the attack paths.  相似文献

Measuring the affective state of an individual across species with comparable non-invasive methods is a current challenge in animal communication research. This study aims to explore to which extent affect intensity is conveyed in the vocal behaviours of three nonhuman primate species (Campbell''s monkeys, De Brazza''s monkeys, red-capped mangabeys), which vary in body size, ecological niche and social system. Similarly in the three species, we experimentally induced a change in captive social groups'' affect by locking all group members together in their outside enclosure. The two experimental conditions which varied in affect intensity consisted in imposing a pre-reunion 90 mn-separation by splitting up the respective group into two subgroups (High affect condition) or not (Low affect condition). We measured call rates as well as voice features at the time of reunion in both conditions. The three studied species reacted in a very similar way. Across species, call rates changed significantly between the behaviourally defined states. Furthermore, contact call duration and, to some extent, voice pitch increased. Our results suggest, for the first time in arboreal Old World monkeys, that affect intensity is conveyed reliably in vocal behaviour and specific acoustic characteristics of voice, irrespective of body size and ecological niche differences between species. Cross-taxa similarities in acoustic cues of affect intensity point to phylogenetic constraints and inheritance from a common ancestor, whereas variations in vocal behaviour and affect intensity-related acoustic cues between species may be an adaptation to specific social requirements and depend on social systems. Our findings as well as a comparison with published works on acoustic communication in other vertebrate groups support the hypothesis that affect intensity in human voice originates from precursors already found deep inside the vertebrate phylogeny.  相似文献

Abstract

TE5A is a thermo-sensitive dominant genic male sterility line originating from spontaneous mutation of the inbred line TE5 in Brassica napus and provides a promising system for the development of hybrid cultivars. Genetic analysis has revealed that the BntsMs mutant is controlled by a single, dominant gene. Here, we describe the fine mapping of BntsMs using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and intron polymorphism (IP) methodologies. We screened 1,024 primer combinations and then identified five AFLP markers linked to the BntsMs gene, two of which were successfully converted into sequence-characterised amplified region (SCAR) markers. The linkage of the markers was identified by analysing a large BC2 population of 700 recessive-fertility individuals. Two SCAR markers were found in the flanking region of the BntsMs gene at distance of 3.5 and 4.8 cm. Based on sequence information from the previously screened AFLP markers and on genome organisation comparisons of the A genome of Brassica rapa and Arabidopsis, seven IP markers linked to the BntsMs gene were developed. By analysing the 700 recessive-fertility individuals, two IP markers, IP004 and IP470, were localised to the flanking region of the BntsMs gene at a distance of 0.3 and 0.2 cm, respectively. A comparison of the B. rapa and Arabidopsis genomes revealed 27 genes of B. rapa in the flanking region of these two IP markers. It is likely that the molecular markers developed from these investigations will greatly accelerate the positional cloning of the BntsMs gene.  相似文献

Few archaeobotanical studies of Roman agricultural practices and their environmental impact in Anatolia (modern Turkey) have been published. New data from Roman levels at Gordion, a multi-period urban centre in central Anatolia, indicate that free-threshing wheat, most likely Triticum aestivum (bread wheat), was the focus of agricultural practice, in contrast to earlier periods when a more diverse agricultural system included greater amounts of barley and pulses. Evidence for increased levels of irrigation and wood fuel use relative to dung, along with regional overgrazing, provide further evidence for significant change in land-use practices during the Roman period. The emphasis on T. aestivum cultivation coupled with extensive grazing had significant environmental implications, leading to severe overgrazing and soil erosion on a regional scale. Historical sources and limited data from other Roman period sites suggest that similar patterns of agriculture may have been practiced across central Anatolia during the Roman period. We propose that this may have been due to externally imposed demands for taxation or military tribute in the form of wheat, and conclude that these demands led to the adoption of an unsustainable agricultural system at Gordion.  相似文献

Gouzoules et al. (1984, Animal Behaviour,32, 182-193) presented evidence that semifree-ranging rhesus monkeys, Macaca mulatta, produce acoustically distinctive classes of scream vocalizations that carry different functional messages. To determine the perceptual validity of these vocal classes, we conducted psychophysical experiments on captive rhesus monkeys. We trained two monkeys to maintain contact with a metal response cylinder during presentation of nontarget stimuli, and to release the cylinder to report detection of target stimuli. For one subject, tonal screams served as nontarget stimuli and arched screams served as targets. These conditions were reversed for a second subject. Once natural exemplars were correctly discriminated, both subjects correctly generalized to synthetic targets. Variability in responses to nontarget stimuli, however, suggested that scream categories were not well defined following training. This result suggests that rhesus monkeys do not perceive categorical distinctions between arched and tonal screams, at least under the testing conditions implemented. Rather, our results provide evidence for a graded category. To explore which acoustic features are most important for classifying novel exemplars as tonal or arched screams, we ran several follow-up experiments with novel scream exemplars. Generalization trials suggested that variation in rate of frequency change, maximum frequency of the fundamental and harmonic structure may be important to the discrimination of screams.  相似文献

Based upon an extensive single-channel data set, a Markov model for types I and II inositol trisphosphate receptors (IP(3)R) is developed. The model aims to represent accurately the kinetics of both receptor types of IP(3)R depending on the concentrations of inositol trisphosphate (IP(3)), adenosine trisphosphate (ATP), and intracellular calcium (Ca(2+)). In particular, the model takes into account that for some combinations of ligands the IP(3)R switches between extended periods of inactivity alternating with intervals of bursting activity (mode changes). In a first step, the inactive and active modes are modeled separately. It is found that, within modes, both receptor types are ligand-independent. In a second step, the submodels are connected by transition rates. Ligand-dependent regulation of the channel activity is achieved by modulating these transitions between active and inactive modes. As a result, a compact representation of the IP(3)R is obtained that accurately captures stochastic single-channel dynamics including mode changes in a model with six states and 10 rate constants, only two of which are ligand-dependent.  相似文献
