The gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.), is a polyphagous defoliator introduced to Medford, Massachusetts in 1869. It has spread to over 860,000 km2 in North America, but this still only represents ¼ of its susceptible host range in the United States. To delay defoliation in the remaining susceptible host range, the government maintains a barrier zone and a quarantine, reflecting a presumption that anthropogenic factors are important in the spread of gypsy moth. We develop a model framework that relates these factors along with biophysical characteristics to a county’s susceptibility to gypsy moth invasion. We then compile a dataset for counties within 200 km of the infested area and use trap catch data from 1999 to 2007 to estimate the probability of gypsy moth presence. As expected, gypsy moth is more likely to be found close to the population front and to traps that recorded moths in the previous year. However, when controlling for these factors, our most robust finding is that the use of wood for home heating and energy is consistently positively correlated with the presence of gypsy moth. In contrast, the movement of wood products by industry, which is actively regulated by state and federal governments, is rarely correlated with the presence of gypsy moth. This is consistent with effective regulation of the movement of goods by industry, but not by the public. Our findings provide empirical support for the importance and challenge of firewood as a vector for non-native forest insects.  相似文献

In an endeavor to contribute to the comprehension of the evolution of transposable elements (TEs) in the genome of host species, we investigated the phylogenetic relationships of sequences homologous to the retrotransposon gypsy of Drosophila melanogaster in 19 species of Drosophila, in Scaptodrosophila latifasciaeformis, and in Zaprionus indianus. This phylogenetic study was based on approximately 500 base pairs of the env gene. Our analyses showed considerable discrepancy between the phylogeny of gypsy elements and the relationship of their host species, and they allow us to infer a complex evolutionary pattern that could include ancestral polymorphism, vertical transmission, and several cases of horizontal transmission.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Predation by small mammals has previously been shown to be the largest source of mortality in low‐density gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.), populations in established populations in north‐eastern North America. Fluctuations in predation levels are critical in determining changes in population densities. 2 We compared small mammal communities and levels of predation on gypsy moth pupae among five different oak‐dominated forest types along this insect's western expanding population front in Wisconsin. Comparisons of predator impact can provide critical information for predicting variation in susceptibility among forest types. 3 The results indicated that small mammals caused more mortality than did invertebrates. 4 Both abundance of Peromyscus sp. predators and predation levels were lower in urban and xeric forest types than in mesic sites. 5 These results suggest that, because predation pressures will probably be greater in the mesic sites, gypsy moths may be less likely to develop outbreaks in these habitats, and that defoliation will probably be more frequent in urban and xeric oak‐dominated sites.  相似文献

Despite the close similarities between retroviruses and the gypsy/Ty3 group of LTR-retrotransposons their host ranges are largely distinct: the retroviruses are found only in vertebrates, whereas the gypsy LTR-retrotransposons are almost exclusively restricted to invertebrates, plants and fungi. Here we report the amplification by PCR, and characterisation, of one of the first LTR-retrotransposons to be discovered in vertebrates - in several members of the piscine family Salmonidae. Phylogenetic analysis of this retroelement, termed easel, indicates that it is probably a phylogeneticaly basal member of the gypsy group of LTR-retrotransposons and occurs in some of the same species from which retroviruses have previously been isolated. Thus some members of the Salmonidae are the first organisms known to harbour both retroviral branch elements and the gypsy LTR-retrotransposon branch elements. This creates an overlap in the host ranges of the two retroelement families.  相似文献

The adaptiveness of plasticity of digestive enzyme responses to allelochemical stress was tested on 32 full-sib families of gypsy moth larvae from an oak forest population (the Quercus population) and 26 families from a locust-tree forest (the Robinia population), reared either on control diet, or on tannin-supplemented diet. Using the duration of larval development as an indirect measure of fitness, phenotypic selection analyses revealed that lower specific activities of total proteases and trypsin, and higher specific activity of leucine aminopeptidase were adaptive for both populations in the control environment. Plasticity was only shown to be costly for total proteases and trypsin activity in Quercus larvae. In a stressful environment, the most apparent adaptive response was a significant increase in lipase activity. There was no plasticity cost for lipase activity. The two populations differed in the direction of selection acting on α-glucosidase activity, which favoured decreased activity in Quercus larvae and increased activity in Robinia larvae in the control environment. α-glucosidase activity in Quercus larvae is characterized by cost of homeostasis, while cost of plasticity was shown for Robinia larvae. The results obtained on the plasticity of digestive enzyme activity indicate how this generalist species copes with variation in plant allelochemicals.  相似文献

Radiolabeled Lymantria dispar nuclear polyhedrosis virus DNA probes were used in a DNA hybridization assay to detect the presence of viral DNA in extracts from infected larvae. Total DNA was extracted from larvae, bound to nitrocellulose filters, and assayed for the presence of viral DNA by two methods: slot-blot vacuum filtration and whole-larval squashes. To test the assays, neonate larvae were fed droplets containing a known concentration of L. dispar nuclear polyhedrosis virus and observed for up to 10 days to determine the percentage of infected larvae. The average percent mortalities were 88.0, 60.7, 26.0, and 5.3% for larvae fed droplets containing 4.0 x 10(4), 1.0 x 10(4), 2.5 x 10(3), and 6.25 x 10(2) polyhedral inclusion bodies (PIBs) per ml, respectively. Other larvae treated with the same virus concentrations were frozen at 2, 4, and 6 days postinoculation and examined by the hybridization techniques. The average percentage of slot blots containing viral DNA equaled 81.0, 58.0, 18.0, and 6.0% for larvae blotted 4 days after treatment with 4.0 x 10(4), 1.0 x 10(4), 2.5 x 10(3), and 6.25 x 10(2) PIBs per ml, respectively, and 89.9, 52.1, 26.6, and 6.0%, respectively at 6 days postinoculation. Thus, the hybridization results were closely correlated with mortality observed in reared larvae. Hybridization of squashes of larvae frozen 4 days after receiving the above virus treatments also produced accurate measures of the incidence of virus infection.  相似文献

The soluble enzyme phenoloxidase (tyrosinase) from the larval cuticle of Lymantria dispar has been partially purified using Ultrogel ACA 34, and the activity has been determined using phenolic substrates. The enzyme exhibited more activity toward O-diphenolic substrates and monophenolic substrates. The enzyme is inhibited by diethyl dithiocarbamate, phenylthiourea, and thiourea. The enzyme has been localized in the 7% slab and disc PAGE as an intense band. The enzyme is suggested to be involved in wound healing. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract The vitellogenic period of gypsy moth ovarian development starts on day 3 of the pupal stage and continues through adulthood. During this period, rapid increases occur in follicle size, protein content, and wet weight of the ovary. Patency is observed on day 3 of the pupal stage.
Pre-vitellogenic follicles are formed in the last larval stadium. Newly formed follicles detach from the germarium on day 4, and increase rapidly to 140 per ovariole at the end of the last larval stadium. The pre-vitellogenic follicles are uniformly around 50 um in diameter. No vitellogenin is incorporated into the oocytes until the pupal stage.
Polyacrylamide gel electrophosesis (PAGE) in the presence of sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) analysis of male and female haemolymph samples and vitellogenic ovaries demonstrates the presence of two female-specific subunits of vitellogenin of 180 kD and 160 kD. These proteins are detected only in haemolymph and ovarian extracts of vitellogenic females. The molecular weight of the native protein determined by size exclusion chromatography is approximately 400–420 kD.
A highly sensitive double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to monitor the temporal changes in vitellogenin titre in haemolymph. Vitellogenin production starts on day 2 of the last larval stadium, reaching a maximum level by day 6 of the last larval stadium, and decreasing in the late pupal stage as vitellogenin was internalized into the oocytes. This is the first report of vitellogenin production occurring in the larval stage of a holometabolous insect. The fact that vitellogenin production and uptake occur during different stages of development in the gypsy moth, opens up some interesting questions concerning the underlying regulatory mechanisms controlling each process.  相似文献

Chromatin insulators have been implicated in the regulation of higher-order chromatin structure and may function to compartmentalize the eukaryotic genome into independent domains of gene expression. To test this possibility, we used biochemical and computational approaches to identify gypsy-like genomic-binding sites for the Suppressor of Hairy-wing [Su(Hw)] protein, a component of the gypsy insulator. EMSA and FISH analyses suggest that these are genuine Su(Hw)-binding sites. In addition, functional tests indicate that genomic Su(Hw)-binding sites can inhibit enhancer-promoter interactions and thus function as bona fide insulators. The insulator strength is dependent on the genomic location of the transgene and the number of Su(Hw)-binding sites, with clusters of two to three sites showing a stronger effect than individual sites. These clusters of Su(Hw)-binding sites are located mostly in intergenic regions or in introns of large genes, an arrangement that fits well with their proposed role in the formation of chromatin domains. Taken together, these data suggest that genomic gypsy-like insulators may provide a means for the compartmentalization of the genome within the nucleus.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The auditory characteristics of two populations (laboratory reared and wild) of North American gypsy moths (Lymantriidae: Lymantria dispar L.) were sampled and the neurally derived thresholds of wild males and females to frequencies from 5 to 150 kHz compared. The noctuoid auditory receptors, Al and A2-cell, and putative proprioceptor, B-cell, were identified. Both sexes possess neurally responsive ears but females exhibit median best frequencies significantly lower than those of males. Audiogram comparisons reveal significantly different thresholds at 5–15 kHz, 30–120 kHz and 130–140 kHz, with females less sensitive to all but the lowest frequencies. Wild male populations reveal less audiogram variability than laboratory-reared individuals, while females' tuning curves appear more similar. The high variability present in colony moths warrants caution in the use of laboratory-reared insects for studies that assume natural levels of selection pressure. We suggest that male L. dispar possess adaptively functional ears tuned to the frequencies in the echo-location signals of bats but that the flightless females of this species are not exposed to bat predation and therefore possess ears in a state of evolutionary degeneration.  相似文献

In the 2nd half of the 8th century A.D., the Barmakids, descendants of an Iranian princely house of Central Asia, succeeded for 3 generations as viziers and governors of the caliphs to be very popular with the common people and, at the same time, to achieve considerable influence, wealth and power at the court of the reigning Abbasids. However, in the course of time, this astounding rise filled the caliph H?r?n al Rash?d with growing distrust and later on with indomitable hatred. Finally, all these events induced him to bring about an unexpected cruel end to the rule of the constantly growing power of this court dynasty, an actual state in the state. The fact that a group of the later Egyptian gipsies, who were also called Ghaw?z?, still bear the name Bar?mika can perhaps be better understood on the following grounds. It might have happened that, owing to Oriental exceeding recklessness, the gypsies who at that time inhabited the present Iraq were given this denomination as a particularly oppurtune degrading and insulting name by the residential Arabian population which because of the gloomy events must have been extremely upset and alarmed. On the other hand, it might have also been that the gypsies who at that time were expelled from Mesopotamia because of the existing hatred against foreigners have, in order to disguise themselves, adopted the name of this noble house which in the Islamic world continued to be highly esteemed. Finally, both might have happened in close historical succession. All that allows to draw the cautious conclusion that a small split off migrating group of gypsies, who in the 6th century A.D. on their move in flight before the rage of the Huns had immigrated to Iran, halted during their migration in Mesopotamia at the latest in about the 8th century. A survey of the recorded denominations of the gypsies in the 19th to 20th century and the denominations of romoid ethnic groups in Egypt are presented.  相似文献

It has become increasingly clear that retrotransposons (RTEs) are more widely expressed in somatic tissues than previously appreciated. RTE expression has been implicated in a myriad of biological processes ranging from normal development and aging, to age related diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration. Long Terminal Repeat (LTR)-RTEs are evolutionary ancestors to, and share many features with, exogenous retroviruses. In fact, many organisms contain endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) derived from exogenous retroviruses that integrated into the germ line. These ERVs are inherited in Mendelian fashion like RTEs, and some retain the ability to transmit between cells like viruses, while others develop the ability to act as RTEs. The process of evolutionary transition between LTR-RTE and retroviruses is thought to involve multiple steps by which the element loses or gains the ability to transmit copies between cells versus the ability to replicate intracellularly. But, typically, these two modes of transmission are incompatible because they require assembly in different sub-cellular compartments. Like murine IAP/IAP-E elements, the gypsy family of retroelements in arthropods appear to sit along this evolutionary transition. Indeed, there is some evidence that gypsy may exhibit retroviral properties. Given that gypsy elements have been found to actively mobilize in neurons and glial cells during normal aging and in models of neurodegeneration, this raises the question of whether gypsy replication in somatic cells occurs via intracellular retrotransposition, intercellular viral spread, or some combination of the two. These modes of replication in somatic tissues would have quite different biological implications. Here, we demonstrate that Drosophila gypsy is capable of both cell-associated and cell-free viral transmission between cultured S2 cells of somatic origin. Further, we demonstrate that the ability of gypsy to move between cells is dependent upon a functional copy of its viral envelope protein. This argues that the gypsy element has transitioned from an RTE into a functional endogenous retrovirus with the acquisition of its envelope gene. On the other hand, we also find that intracellular retrotransposition of the same genomic copy of gypsy can occur in the absence of the Env protein. Thus, gypsy exhibits both intracellular retrotransposition and intercellular viral transmission as modes of replicating its genome.  相似文献

Geographical variation in the periodicity of gypsy moth outbreaks   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The existence of periodic oscillations in populations of forest Lepidoptera is well known. While information exists on how the periods of oscillations vary among different species, there is little prior evidence of variation in periodicity within the range of a single Lepidopteran species. The exotic gypsy moth is an introduced foliage-feeding insect in North America. Its populations are characterized by high amplitude oscillations between innocuously low densities and outbreak levels during which large regions of forests are defoliated. These outbreaks are recognized to arise periodically with considerable synchrony across much of the gypsy moth's North American range. Our analysis indicates that gypsy moth outbreaks in North America are periodic but they exhibit two dominant periodicities: a primary period of 8–10 yr (as previously reported) and a secondary period of 4–5 yr (a new finding in this study). The outbreak periodicity varied geographically and this variation was associated with forest type. We found that in the most susceptible forest types, those on xeric sites where oak is often mixed with pines, outbreak periodicity had a more dominant 5-yr period while in forest types characteristic of more mesic sites where oak was mixed with maples and other species, cycles were clearly operating on a 10-yr period.  相似文献

Optimization of pheromone dosage for gypsy moth mating disruption   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The effect of aerial applications of the pheromone disparlure at varying dosages on mating disruption in low‐density gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), populations was determined in field plots in Virginia, USA during 2000 and 2002. Six dosages [0.15, 0.75, 3, 15, 37.5, and 75 g active ingredient (AI)/ha] of disparlure were tested during the 2‐year study. A strongly positive dose–response relationship was observed between pheromone dosages and mating disruption, as measured by the reduction in male moth capture in pheromone‐baited traps and mating successes of females. Dosages of pheromone 15 g AI/ha (15, 37.5, and 75 g AI/ha) reduced the mating success of females by >99% and significantly reduced male moth catches in pheromone‐baited traps compared to untreated plots. Pheromone dosages <15 g AI/ha also reduced trap catch, but to a lesser extent than dosages 15 g AI/ha. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the lower dosage treatments (0.15, 0.75, and 3 g AI/ha) declined over time, so that by the end of the study, male moth catches in traps were significantly lower in plots treated with pheromone dosages 15 g AI/ha. The dosage of 75 g AI/ha was initially replaced by a dosage of 37.5 g AI/ha in the USDA Forest Service Slow‐the‐Spread (STS) of the Gypsy Moth management program, but the program is currently making the transition to a dosage of 15 g AI/ha. These changes in applied dosages have resulted in a reduction in the cost of gypsy moth mating disruption treatments.  相似文献
