The Ponto‐Caspian invader Hemimysis anomala was studied in the river Elbe, Czech Republic. The study confirmed further spread of the species: the presence of juveniles and gravid females indicated that H. anomala is established within the Elbe River. Bottom, mid‐water and surface drift samples were collected during 24‐h cycles from July to September 2007. A tendency to remain hidden was the main behavioural strategy of H. anomala in the riverine environment. The mysid was found mainly in the bottom and mid‐water layers, and observed density and mean length of drifting individuals increased with decreasing light levels, being highest at night. Similarly, density and mean length of drifting individuals increased with increasing turbidity. The effect of turbidity on density was particularly apparent during the night samples, suggesting further advantage to night‐drifting individuals. (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. 1. The diet of the invasive freshwater jellyfish, Craspedacusta sowerbyi (Lankester), was assessed by analysing its stomach contents. 2. The medusae ingested various zooplankton and benthic prey in the 0.1–3.0 mm size range. The selectivity indices for prey showed that larger zooplankton (0.4–1.4 mm) and active prey such as copepods were preferred; small potential prey, and the loricate rotifer Keratella cochlearis in particular, were almost never consumed. Measurements suggest that spacing between the tentacle branches could determine prey selection. Another possibility is that some prey are too small or slow to activate nematocysts after collision with the predator. Prey > 1.4 mm can probably escape or are otherwise too large to be handled. 3. The medusae of Craspedacusta medusae stayed in deep water during daytime and migrated upwards at night. The greatest number of prey in freshwater jellyfish stomachs was detected at night. 4. Calculation of consumption rates, based on mean stomach contents and digestion times of 4–5 h, showed that, on average, one medusa takes 190 zooplankton prey day??1 at a mean prey density of about 100 L??1. SUMMARY 1. Negative effects of zooplankton on the availability of phosphorus (P) for phytoplankton as a result of the retention of nutrients in zooplankton biomass and the sedimentation of exoskeletal remains after moulting, have been recently proposed. 2. In a mesocosm study, the relative importance of these mechanisms was tested for the freshwater cladoceran Daphnia hyalina×galeata. A total of 13 mesocosm bags was suspended in a mesotrophic German lake during summer 2000 and fertilised with inorganic P in order to obtain a total nitrogen to total P ratio closer to the Redfield ratio. D. hyalina×galeata was then added at a logarithmically scaled density gradient of up to 40 ind. L?1. Zooplankton densities, dissolved inorganic, particulate organic (seston <100 μm), as well as total nutrient concentrations were monitored. Additionally, nutrient concentrations of sediment water removed from the bottom of the mesocosm bags via a manual pump were determined. 3. Seston carbon (C), seston P and total P were significantly negatively correlated with Daphnia densities. The amount of particulate P (~5–6 μg P L?1) sequestered from the seston compartment by Daphnia corresponded roughly to the increase of zooplankton biomass (population growth). Soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP) was at all times high (~25–35 μg P L?1) and possibly unavailable to phytoplankton as a result of P adsorption to calcite during a calcite precipitation event (whiting). P concentrations determined in sediment water were generally <60 μg P m?2 and thus never exceeded 1% of the total amount of P bound in particulate matter of the overlying water column. 4. Seston C : P ratios followed a polynomial second‐order function: At Daphnia densities <40 ind. L?1 a positive linear relationship was evident, which is explained by the stronger reduction of P compared with C in seston, and transfer of seston P to zooplankton. Highest seston C : P ratios of ~300 : 1 were observed at Daphnia densities of ~30–50 ind. L?1, which is in agreement with proposed threshold values limiting Daphnia reproductive growth. At Daphnia densities >40–50 ind. L?1 C : P ratios were decreased because of the strong reduction of seston C at close to constantly low seston P‐values of ~3–4 μg P L?1. 5. At least for Daphnia, it may be concluded that – unlike population growth – the sedimentation of faecal pellets and carapaces after moulting seem negligible processes in pelagic phosphorus dynamics.  相似文献

Summary

The size, structure, and density of a population of Lytechinus variegatus were recorded from a shallow seagrass bed (Halodule wrightii) at 40-day intervals from April 1994 to April 1995. A local mass mortality was observed in May 1994. The density declined from 0.57±0.10 to 0.06±0.05 ind.m?2, mean size declined from 37.6±0.49 to 16.2±2.14 mm and maximum size from 75 to 40 mm. Ten months after mortality, the maximum and mean sizes had returned to initialvalues, but density had not (0.10±0.03 ind.m?2). A second, smaller mass mortality occurred in April 1995. High values of gonad index were recorded before mortality (9.40±5.97) and after population recovery (11.96±5.74). Recruitment was continuous throughout the year, but reached a peak from August to October. This can he related to the patterns of upwelling in the region. Mass mortality is probably an annual event in this population that can be correlated with the occurrence of low tides during daytime in the fell. The population can recover during the summer when low tides occur during the night. The massive input of recruits prevents extinction of the population during the season of high mortality. Population recovery depends on the magnitude of recruitment.  相似文献

利用2012年12月—2013年9月4个季度的现场调查资料研究了黄河口邻近海域浮游动物群落的时空分布特征。研究表明,黄河口邻近海域共鉴定出浮游动物70种,包括浮游幼虫19类。浮游动物优势种主要由夜光虫(Noctiluca scintillans)、小拟哲水蚤(Paracalanus parvus)、双刺纺锤水蚤(Acartia bifilosa)、拟长腹剑水蚤(Oithona similis)、强额拟哲水蚤(Paracalanus crassirostris)、近缘大眼剑水蚤(Corycaeus affinis)、强壮箭虫(Sagitta crassa)、双壳类幼体(Bivalvia larvae)、多毛类幼体(Polychaeta larvae)等种类。黄河口邻近海域浮游动物丰度夏季最高(60620个/m~3),春季(31228个/m~3)和秋季(21540个/m~3)次之,冬季最低(7594个/m~3)。不同季节浮游动物丰度的空间分布具有差异性,春季浮游动物丰度呈现出从近岸到外海降低的趋势;夏季浮游动物形成两个高丰度区,分别位于河口邻近海区和河口东部海区;秋季和冬季浮游动物丰度高值区均位于河口东部海区。浮游动物生物多样性指数均呈现从河口到外海升高的趋势,低值区位于黄河口入海口附近海区。相关性分析显示,黄河口邻近海域浮游动物丰度与海水温度显著正相关(r=0.212,P0.05),表明温度为影响黄河口邻近海域浮游动物丰度变化的主要因素。  相似文献

1. The composition and activity of phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacterioplankton in the lower River Rhine were measured in 1990 as part of an international biological inventory of the river. A seasonal study was carried out on two stations: one in the river mouth (km 1019) and one at the German/Dutch border (km 863). 2. High densities of phytoplankton (with up to 140 μg chlorophyll a 1-?1) and occasional depletion of dissolved silicate were observed at the upstream station. Phosphate concentrations were also lowered during blooms. 3. Phytoplankton blooms, dominated by a few species of centric diatoms, declined one order of magnitude during downstream transport. During non-bloom conditions (low) algal densities were maintained during transport, or increased slightly, indicating the suitability of the river reach for algal growth. 4. Bacterial cell number and production (measured by the 3H-thymidine method) showed a broad summer maximum with activity peaks (0.5 nK < M thymidine h?1) coincident with declining phytoplankton blooms. Winter values of bacterial production (0.02–0.05 n < Mh?1) were substantial, probably as a result of allochthonous input of organic matter. 5. Rotifers and crustaceans made up the greater part of the zooplankton biovolume, but at the upstream station the contribution of Dreissena larvae and rhizopods was also substantial. High zooplankton biovolumes, of over 500 × 106μm31-?1, were observed only during the phytoplankton spring bloom. 6. Quantitative relationships between the high phytoplankton production (2.1–3.4 gCm?2 day?1), the high bacterial substrate uptake (0.5–1gCm?2 day?1), and grazing were analysed for the growing season 1990. Algal grazing by metazoan herbivores was substantial only during spring, while the role of phagotrophic microplankton and cell lysis were indicated as major factors responsible for the downstream decline of phytoplankton blooms in the lower Rhine.  相似文献

The dissemination of Hemimysis anomala (H. anomala) in Europe and more recently in North America highlights the problem of proliferation of invasive species able to form large colonies. Concern relates mainly to competition for food, in particular the zooplankton that H. anomala feeds on at the juvenile stage and that could be lacking for many other species, like young fish. A recent study describes the spread of H. anomala towards the south of France by the Rhône River (Wittmann and Ariani in Biol Invasions, 7 pp, 2008). We have also found it near the Marne east of Paris, as well as in an increasing number of rivers and gravel pits in Alsace. We confirm here that H. anomala is very prolific, reproducing three times a year, in March/April, June/July and September/October. During the winter, we observed gatherings of thousands of individuals in open water from mid-December until March/April, with females carrying eggs in March when water reaches 7–8°C. The tracking of the population of H. anomala in an Alsatian gravel pit during three consecutive years shows a marked reduction in the number of individuals after a period of strong growth, which could be explained by substantial predation by perch and other predators. Finally, the ecological impact of the establishment of H. anomala was evaluated indirectly by the study of alevin and hydra populations, chosen for their nutritional dependence on zooplankton. Combined with the decrease of the H. anomala population observed over the period studied, our data suggest that a major impact on the aquatic community by H. anomala is unlikely at least in the studied area. Two benthic ctenophores, Coeloplana waltoni and Vallicula multiformis, are contrasted in terms of their coastal environments, habitats, abundances, seasonal occurrences, and behavior in south Florida. Coeloplana waltoni occurs as an epibiont on octocorals in open water settings, and V. multiformis is present in bio‐fouling communities, associated with macroalgae, bryozoans, and inanimate substrates in protected, back‐water habitats. In our study, individuals of C. waltoni were found under moderate to strong current flow and relatively constant temperature and salinity (T/S) conditions, whereas individuals of V. multiformis occurred at sites of low current flow and more variable T/S conditions. In C. waltoni, individuals generally adhered tightly to host colony surfaces, whereas in V. multiformis, individuals often disassociated from substrates and floated free. Mean population densities of C. waltoni ranged ~500–850 individuals 100 mL?1 (measured as the displacement volume of the octocoral habitat), and densities of V. multiformis ranged 5–360 individuals 100 mL?1 (measured as the displacement volume of the biofouling habitat). Abundance of C. waltoni was significantly highest in the 2014 warm season (June–October) when numerous minute (≤0.5 mm body length) juveniles were present. Vallicula multiformis was abundant in the 2015 and 2016 warm seasons (July–October), and also relatively abundant in the 2016 cool season (March–April). Ctenophore abundance and surface seawater temperature indicate a significant positive response to warm‐season conditions in C. waltoni, whereas numbers of V. multiformis did not show any effect of seawater temperature. Recently settled individuals of V. multiformis (≤1.0 mm) occurred throughout the year. Individuals of V. multiformis recruited to fiber‐coated sponges during warm and cool periods, with mean body sizes increasing in one cohort from 1.41 to 6.46 mm over a 39‐d period, suggesting a growth rate of ~4% d?1. Feeding in both species involves tentacle capture of water‐borne zooplankton and particulate organic matter. Individuals of C. waltoni were also observed inserting tentacles into octocoral polyps, possibly pilfering food. Chlorophyll a was detected in extracts of both ctenophore species. The high abundances and feeding behavior of benthic ctenophores could have a strong influence on octocoral and biofouling communities.  相似文献

1. Return of large‐bodied zooplankton populations is of key importance for creating a shift from a turbid to a clear‐water state in shallow lakes after a nutrient loading reduction. In temperate lakes, recovery is promoted by submerged macrophytes which function as a daytime refuge for large zooplankton. However, recovery of macrophytes is often delayed and use of artificial plant beds (APB) has been suggested as a tool to enhance zooplankton refuges, thereby reinforcing the shift to a clear‐water state and, eventually, colonisation of natural plants. 2. To further evaluate the potential of APB in lake restoration, we followed the day–night habitat choices of zooplankton throughout summer in a clear and a turbid lake. Observations were made in the pelagic and littoral zones and in APB in the littoral representing three different plant densities (coverage 0%, 40% and 80%). 3. In the clear lake, the zooplankton (primarily Daphnia) were mainly found in the pelagic area in spring, but from mid‐May they were particularly abundant in the APB and almost exclusively so in mid‐June and July, where they appeared in extremely high densities during day (up to 2600 ind. L−1). During night Daphnia densities were overall more equally distributed between the five habitats. Ceriodaphnia was proportionally more abundant in the APB during most of the season. Cyclopoids were more abundant in the high APB during day but were equally distributed between the five habitats during night. 4. In the turbid lake, however, no clear aggregation was observed in the APB for either of the pelagic genera (Daphnia and Bosmina). This may reflect a higher refuge effect in the open water due to the higher turbidity, reduced ability to orient to plant beds and a significantly higher fish density (mainly of roach, Rutilus rutilus, and perch, Perca fluviatilis) in the plant beds than in the clear lake. Chydorus was found in much higher proportions among the plants, while cyclopoids, particularly the pelagic Cyclops vicinus, dominated in the pelagic during day and in the pelagic and high density plants during night. 5. Our results suggest that water clarity is decisive for the habitat choice of large‐bodied zooplankton and that introduction of APB as a restoration measure to enhance zooplankton survival is only a useful tool when water clarity increases following loading reduction. Aims: In this article, a quantitative real‐time PCR assay for detection and enumeration of the spoilage yeast Dekkera anomala in beer, cola, apple cider, and brewing wort is presented as an improvement upon existing detection methods, which are very time‐consuming and not always accurate. Methods and Results: Primers were designed to exclude other organisms common in these beverages, and the assay was linear over 6 log units of cell concentrations. The addition of large amounts of non‐target yeast DNA did not affect the efficiency of this assay. A standard curve of known DNA was established by plotting the Ct values obtained from the QPCR against the log of plate counts on yeast peptone dextrose medium and unknowns showed exceptional correlation when tested against this standard curve. The assay was found to detect D. anomala at levels of 10–14 CFU ml?1 in either cola or beer and at levels of 9·4–25·0 CFU ml?1 in apple cider. The assay was also used to follow the growth of D. anomala in brewing wort. Conclusions: The results indicate that real‐time PCR is an effective tool for rapid, accurate detection and quantitation of D. anomala in beer, cola and apple cider. Significance and Impact of the Study: This method gives a faster and more efficient technique to screen beer, cola, and cider samples and reduce spoilage by D. anomala. Faster screening may allow for significant reduction in economic loss because of reduced spoilage.  相似文献

Survival during early fish larval stages depends largely upon the availability of appropriate prey. Studied were the functional responses from hatching to 6 weeks of age of whitefish (Charal) (Chirostoma riojai) larvae that were offered selected rotifers (Brachionus rotundiformis and B. rubens) and cladocerans (Moina macrocopa and Ceriodaphnia dubia). The experiments were conducted in a 50 ml medium at a salinity of 2 g L?1. Each treatment used four replicates. Rotifers were introduced at densities of 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 individuals ml?1 and cladocerans at 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, 4.8 and 6.4 individuals ml?1. Two larvae, previously starved for 2 h, were introduced into each test jar and allowed to feed for 45 min. The difference between the initial and final zooplankton density represented prey consumption. C. riojai larvae showed Type II functional response curves, i.e. they consumed more zooplankton with increasing prey availability; above a certain prey density (8–16 individuals ml?1 in rotifers and 3.2–6.4 individuals ml?1 in cladocerans) the consumption rate tended to stabilize in most trials. We analyzed the feeding preference of Cnesterodon decemmaculatus, a small‐bodied poecilid native from the Rio de la Plata and proximate Atlantic Basins in South America. This species has a wide distribution in Uruguayan water bodies but its effectiveness as a predator of mosquito larvae has not been tested. In laboratory trials, five aquatic invertebrates were offered simultaneously as potential prey to fish: Daphnia pulex (Cladocera), copepods, two different instars of mosquito larvae (Culex pipiens), and the 4th instar of Chironomidae larvae. Preference was measured by the Chesson's electivity index (α). In order to determine differences in prey preference according to fish size, individuals ranging from 9.5 mm to 35.3 mm were classified in three different body size classes: small, medium, and large. Small fish showed preference for copepods, while medium‐sized fish preferred the smallest mosquito larvae instars and Chironomidae larvae. We conclude that C. decemmaculatus is a zooplankton facultative‐feeder fish that prefers large‐bodied zooplankton but is a weak predator of mosquito larvae. Thus, the introduction of C. decemmaculatus as a biological‐control agent in natural environments is not an effective strategy.  相似文献

Summary Zooplankton species composition, abundance and vertical distribution were investigated in the upper 1000 m of Croker Passage, Antarctic Peninsula during the austral fall (March–April, 1983). 106 species were identified, many being mesopelagic and reported previously from the Southern Ocean. The most numerous species (>1000/100 m3) were the copepodsMetridia gerlachei, Microcalanus pygmaeus, Oncaea antarctica andOncaea curvata. Oncaea curvata alone constituted half the zooplakton population. Zooplankton biomass was dominated by three copepod species,Metridia gerlachei, Calanoides aculus andEuchaeta antarctica,which comprised 74% of the biomass. Size analysis revealed most of the zooplankton numbers were in the >1 mm fraction. The biomass distribution was polymodal with major maxima in the >1 mm and the 4–4.9 mm size classe. The >1 mm peak, exclusive of protozoans, was primarily copepod nauplii and copepodites ofOncaea, Metridia andMicrocalanus. The 4–4.9 mm peak was mostlyCalanoides acutus andMetridia gerlachei.All of the principal species had broad vertical distributions both day and night. There was some suggestion of diel vertial migration byMetridia gerlachei andEuchaeta antarctica, with segments of their populations migrating into the upper 100 m and 200 m, respectively, at night. Most of the dominant and subdominant species were concentrated below 200 m,with only the subdominantOithona similis having its maximum in the epipelagic zone. The occurrence of zooplankton at winter depths appears to have been earlier in Croker Passage in 1983 than has been generally reported for waters south of the Polar Front.Total standing stock of net-caught zooplankton (>15 mm) in the upper 1000 m was estimated at 3.1 gDW/m2, which is somewhat higher than values reported for the West Wind Drift and for open ocean areas of temperate to tropical latitudes.Euphausia superba (17–52 mm) dominated the pelagic biomass, exceeding zooplankton standing stock under a square meter of ocean by a factor of 15. This is in contrast to lower latitudes where zooplankton biomass is usually greater than macrozooplankton-micronekton.  相似文献

The dramatic decline in annual yield of the Japanese butterfish, Psenopsis anomala, in southwestern Taiwan over the past decade suggests that this stock might have been overexploited. However, its fishery biology and stock status is poorly understood. This study therefore provides the first information on P. anomala reproductive biology based on 983 specimens collected by small trawlers in southwestern Taiwan waters between February 1999 and February 2000. The sex ratio, 0.44 (431/983), differed significantly from 0.5 and females predominated in fork length above 180 mm. The relationships between body weight (BW) and fork length (FL) were estimated as BW = 1.62 × 10?4 × FL2.637 (r2 = 0.74; n = 430, P < 0.01) for females and BW = 1.28 × 10?4 × FL2.671 (r2 = 0.82; n = 552, P < 0.01) for males. Oocytes were mature at 0.5 mm in diameter or larger, and transparent eggs were found at diameters of 0.85 mm. Mean fecundity was estimated at 171 900 ± 61 700 and fecundity (F) was found to increase exponentially with gonad weight (GW) F = 5.4967GW0.511 (n = 132, r2 = 0.74). Mean batch fecundity was estimated to be 83 400 ± 44 600, and relative fecundity from 377 to 2588 (mean 1040) per gram body weight. Logistic curves describing the relationship between proportion of maturity (Pr) at each length interval and fork length were estimated as Pr = 1/(1 + e11.4194?0.0749FL) (r2 = 0.99, n = 351) for females and Pr = 1/(1 + e11.5113?0.0732FL) (r2 = 0.99, n = 258) for males. Size at 50% maturity was estimated as 15.7 and 15.3 cm FL for females and males, respectively. A multi‐spawning pattern was observed in the Japanese butterfish whereby it spawns throughout the year with a peak from February to July. A seasonal closure from April to July (spawning season for most fish species) can provide better breeding opportunities for adults and is believed to be a good fishery management measure for this species.  相似文献

Laboratory cultured Streptocephalus proboscideus (three sizes (mm), viz. 8.44 ± 0.95 (virgin), 14.18 ± 1.49 (adult I) and 19.24 ± 1.52 (adult II)) were offered (separately for males and females) field collected zooplankton (12 prey types) at three levels of abundance (1.0 ml−1, 2.0 ml−1 and 4.1 ind. ml−1 in 30-minute feeding experiments. Gut contents, analyzed for abundance and diversity of prey type, showed that predator size, sex and their interaction had strong effects on prey consumption. Regardless of their size, and of prey density, S. proboscideus females consumed 25–90% more prey than males. Their filtration rates (adult II) were higher (125 ml ind.−1 h.−1) than those of males (30 ml ind.−1 h.−1) too. Rotifers had the highest numerical percentage in the gut, regardless of predator size or sex. Cladocerans were only consumed by adults I and II. Adult II females consumed 28.5–43.3 μg zooplankton dry weight ind.−1 h.−1. Size distribution of B. longirostris in the field and in the gut were closely similar. This study confirms S. proboscideus as a non-selective filter feeder. Since it did not eat jumping rotifers, copepod nauplii and copepodites, it may contribute to structuring its prey communities, because good escapers will be enriched in the medium, while poor escapers will be depleted.  相似文献

1. Cyanobacterial toxin production in response to direct and indirect zooplankton feeding activity was examined using four strains of Microcystis aeruginosa, of which three were previously reported to be toxic to zooplankton and one non‐toxic. Direct (Microcystis cultured with zooplankton) and indirect effects (Microcystis cultured with filtered zooplankton culture media, ZCMF) were tested for the zooplankton species, Moina macrocopa, Daphnia magna or D. pulex. 2. With direct exposure to zooplankton, increased mass‐specific microcystin productions occurred in all Microcystis strains, with mean microcystin concentrations up to five times greater (61.5–177.3 μg g?1 dry cell) than the controls. 3. With indirect exposure, mass‐specific microcystin production increased over controls in three strains of M. aeruginosa. Mean maximum concentrations of microcystin during the experiment were 92.6–125.7 μg g?1 dry cell. 4. These results suggest that several strains of Microcystis aeruginosa increased toxin production in response to direct and indirect exposure to herbivorous zooplankton of several species, and support the hypothesis that this response is an induced defence mediated by the release of info‐chemicals from zooplankton.  相似文献

In an experiment on the effect of zooplankton density on feeding behaviour and prey size selection in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) alevins, total behavioural activity (feeding, social, ambiguous) was positively related to prey abundance up to a density of 350 items 1?1, after which activity peaked. Feeding error (missed attacks and/or rejected ingestions) increased with prey density. The likelihood that an alevin would attack an item upon which it had binocularly fixed (no. bites/no. visual fixes) peaked at densities of 270 items 1?1 and then declined. Feeding success (no. ingestions per bite or per fixation) also peaked and then declined. Changes in success were reflected in total number of items found in the gut. At high prey abundance (608 items 1?1) only 0.5 – 0.9 mm copepods were preferred components of alevin diets. Over all prey densities, preferred sizes of cladocerans and copepods did not overlap. These results may reflect a perceptual constraint (at high zooplankton densities) on alevin feeding behaviour.  相似文献

A few years after it invaded, the amphipod Corophium curvispinum Sars appeared to be the most numerous macroinvertebrate species in the River Rhine. From 1987 to 1991 the densities of this species on the stones of groins in the Lower Rhine at a depth of 0.5 m increased from 2 to 200000 specimens per m2. In the Lower Rhine and its branches the densities of C. curvispinum increased with increasing current velocities and with increasing water depths. So far, a maximum population density of 750000 specimens per m2 has been found in the Lower Rhine, which is many times the densities recorded elsewhere. Population parameters, densities and distribution of C. curvispinum were studied in the Lower Rhine and its branches, using artificial substrates and sampling stones from groins. The success of this immigrant is related to its competitive strategy, which shows several aspects of a r-strategy. In addition, the heavily eutrophicated Lower Rhine provides abundant food (phytoplankton, suspended organic matter) for this opportunistic filter-feeder. The increased salinity and water temperatures in the Lower Rhine resulting from industrial discharges have contributed to the current success of this southern species originating in brackish waters. The very high densities of C. curvispinum might have an enormous impact on the river ecosystem by changing food webs.  相似文献

1. The Ponto‐Caspian polychaete Hypania invalida (Archiv für Naturgeschichte, 1860, 26, 109) is undergoing rapid range expansion in the Rhine and other central European waterways. We examined its reproductive traits in an attempt to account for its remarkable invasive success. 2. For the first time in this species, we found males, dioecy (gonochorism) and an exclusively sexual mode of reproduction; no indication for hermaphroditism or (unisexual) parthenogenesis, that could explain the rapid range expansion of H. invalida, was found. 3. Our experimental evidence shows that H. invalida reproduces by males discharging their sperm into the water column while eggs are retained and fertilised in the female dwelling tubes. This mode of ‘spermcast’ reproduction is common in sessile benthic animals on wave‐washed shores. 4. Fecundity of H. invalida ranged between 60 and 260 eggs per clutch and is increased by iteroparity (i.e. multiple cycles of oogenesis and egg‐laying per specimen). Offspring are brooded for about 2 weeks before they leave the maternal dwelling tubes and disperse in the water column. 5. After connection to a supply of Rhine water, sediments in flumes were rapidly colonised up to a density of 12 000 ind. m?2 via the settlement of small larvae (<300 μm) from the water column; these reached sexual maturity approximately 12 weeks after settlement. 6. The reproductive traits of H. invalida give the species a high rate of dispersal. The capacity of its larvae to survive passage through pumps before settlement enables them to travel in the ballast water of ships. This might explain the upstream expansion of H. invalida in rivers. We conclude that further range expansion, and especially intercontinental transport of this polychaete, can only be prevented by improved ballast water treatment.  相似文献
