Wildfire is an important disturbance factor in forest ecosystem and could affect the distribution of insects. Because Monochamus beetles are known vector insects of pine wood nematodes in Korea and burnt pine trees can be used as oviposition habitats for Monochamus beetles, we investigated changes in the spatial (among fire severity classes) and temporal (between years) distributions of M. alternatus and M. saltuarius. From late May 2017 to early October 2018, four multi-funnel traps with pheromone lure were installed in each fire severity class (unburned, light, light-moderate edge, moderate-severe edge, and severe). All traps were replaced fortnightly from May to October for two years. The spatial distribution of the two Monochamus beetles was significantly affected by fire severity. In particular, M. alternatus showed higher catches in the severely burned sites and responded positively to the fire. A similar number of M. saltuarius individuals were observed between 2017 and 2018, while more M. alternatus were caught in 2018 compared to 2017. Consequently, it was confirmed that the dead wood of P. densiflora caused by the wildfire had a great influence on the density of insects, especially M. alternatus.  相似文献

The effects of five differently-colored sticky traps in capturing adult Diaphorina citri were evaluated in citrus orchards. Trap catches of D. citri were monitored fortnightly on blue, green, red, white and yellow sticky cards placed on three citrus varieties during D. citri active flight period from April to July in south Texas. Evaluation of mean trap catches of each color by repeated measures analysis of variance produced three separate groups: yellow traps caught significantly more D. citri adults than the other four traps; red and green traps caught significantly more D. citri than blue and white traps, which were not significantly different. Although the number of adult psyllid captured on all trap types significantly increased with time during the trapping period, the performance of traps did not change with time. Trap catches were also significantly influenced by the citrus species; traps placed on lemon trees captured more D. citri than those placed on sweet orange and grapefruit, suggesting that plant preference exhibited by D. citri may influence the performance of traps. The ratio of trap reflectance between the 680 to 700 nm and the 450 nm was significantly correlated with total trap catches in all host species studied. Thus, this index was a good indicator of the attractiveness of adult D. citri to colored traps. Additionally, we compared the reflectance values of young versus mature flush shoots of the three host plants used in this study as related to densities of D. citri recorded in colored traps. We discussed the importance of visual cues in the host finding behavior of adult D. citri.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of type, location, and colour of traps baited with 1 mg of the sex pheromone (Z)‐13‐hexadecen‐11‐ynyl acetate in polyethylene vials on the capture of the pine processionary moth, Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Thaumetopoeidae), males. The experiments were carried out during two flight seasons in 2002 and 2003 at a low elevation Mediterranean pine forest on the hill of Goritsa (Magnesia, Thessaly, Central Greece). The hill is covered by approximately 120 ha of pines, among which Pinus brutia Ten. (Pinaceae) is predominant with Pinus halepensis Mill. (Pinaceae) as second most common species. Among the commercially available trap types used, the Delta and Pherocon II captured significantly more males than the Funnel trap. Furthermore, pine density had a significant effect on trap type and trap colour catches. Delta traps caught significantly more adults than the other two trap types in the low density pine stand, while in the medium and high‐density pine stands no significant differences were noted between Delta and Pherocon II traps. In addition, trap colour performance varied according to pine density; white‐ and yellow‐coloured traps caught significantly more males than the other two trap colours in the high‐density stand. The first adults were captured in traps during May, and traps continued to capture adults in low numbers (< two individuals per trap) until mid‐June. A period of 3–4 weeks of no trap captures followed until mid‐July, when captures restarted, at low numbers. The peak of T. pityocampa flight was observed during late August–September.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted using nematode-infested and nematode-free adults of the cerambycid beetle, Monochamus alternatus, to determine horizontal transmission pathways of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. When nematode-infested beetles of one sex and nematode-free beetles of the opposite sex were paired in containers for 48 or 72 hours, the number of nematodes carried by nematode-free beetles tended to increase with increased number of nematodes carried by nematode-infested beetles. The nematodes acquired by "nematode-free" beetles could be transmitted to pine. A female beetle that received 13 nematodes from a male transmitted one nematode to a Pinus densiflora bolt via an oviposition wound. When the nematode-infested and nematode-free beetles were observed continuously, it was observed that the number of nematodes carried by nematode-free beetles at the end of the first sexual mounting increased as the number of nematodes carried by nematode-infested beetles just before mounting increased. The number of nematodes transferred to nematode-free beetles was positively related to duration time of mounting. There was no difference in transmission efficacy between male-to-female transmission and female-to-male transmission. The horizontal transmission pathways are discussed relative to the persistence of B. xylophilus in resistant pine forests and the control of pine wilt disease.  相似文献

To determine the effect of larval frass of Monochamus alternatus on oviposition preference of the female adults, three tests were performed in the laboratory. Individual females were provided with a frass-coated, Pinus densiflora bolt and an untreated bolt simultaneously and were allowed to oviposit for 24 h. They deposited a significantly smaller number of eggs on frass-coated bolts. The females supplied with frass-coated bolts deposited no eggs on them, indicating that the larval frass deterred the females from oviposition. When individual females were provided simultaneously with a pine bolt applied with a methanol extract of larval frass and another bolt applied with methanol alone, they deposited a significantly smaller number of eggs on frass extract-applied bolts for 24 h. These results suggest the presence of a putative oviposition deterrent in larval frass of M. alternatus. Each test was replicated 19-20 times using different females.  相似文献

The orientation of males of the sorghum midge,Contarinia sorghicola Coq. (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) towards virgin female baited sticky traps was studied in the field. Male response increased linearly with an increase in the number of virgin females in the sticky traps. Five females per vial were optimum for monitoring midge populations in the field. Numbers of males trapped were significantly greater in traps placed at 0.5 and 1.5 m above ground level compared with those placed at 2.5 m. Peak trap catches occurred at 0900 h. The number of males trapped decreased significantly after 1400 h; male catches continued till sunset. Trap catches followed the same pattern as the number of ovipositing females on sorghum panicles at the half-anthesis stage. Midge activity decreased with an increase in temperature and a decrease in relative humidity. Peak midge density was observed during the second fortnight of October in the rainy season and during February-March in the post-rainy season. Sex pheromones can be used to monitor midge population dynamics for integrated pest management and to screen for host plant resistance to this insect.  相似文献

In dioecious plants, differences in growth traits between sexes in a response to micro-environmental heterogeneity may affect sex ratio bias and spatial distributions. Here, we examined sex ratios, stem growth traits and spatial distribution patterns in the dioecious clonal shrub Aucuba japonica var. borealis, in stands with varying light intensities. We found that male stems were significantly more decumbent (lower height/length ratio) but female stems were upright (higher height/length ratio). Moreover, we found sex-different response in stem density (no. of stems per unit area) along a light intensity gradient; in males the stem density increased with increases in canopy openness, but not in females. The higher sensitivity of males in increasing stem density to light intensity correlated with male-biased sex ratio; fine-scale sex ratio was strongly male-biased as canopy openness increased. There were also differences between sexes in spatial distributions of stems. Spatial segregation of sexes and male patches occupying larger areas than female patches might result from vigorous growth of males under well-lit environments. In summary, females and males showed different growth responses to environmental variation, and this seemed to be one of possible causes for the sex-differential spatial distributions and locally biased sex ratios.  相似文献

Abstract 1 The effects of pheromone dose, trap size and trap design on the capture of male Matsucoccus feytaudi were studied in maritime pine forests of Portugal, France and Italy, and Matsucoccus josephi in Aleppo pine stands of Israel. 2 Males of both species respond to racemic mixtures of the respective sex pheromone at a dosage as low as 25 µg. However, for low population densities of M. feytaudi, a 50 µg dosage was needed to guarantee male catches significantly different from the control trap. 3 Male capture increased with increasing dosage up to a threshold level for both species. Overdose repellence was not observed even with baits containing 1600 and 2200 µg of the pheromone of M. josephi and M. feytaudi, respectively. 4 For M. feytaudi, a higher dose–response was observed at medium population densities, whereas lesser captures were registered at low and high population densities, suggesting female competition in the latter case. 5 Catches of M. feytaudi males were not affected by trap design, whereas M. josephi males were caught in significantly greater numbers in delta traps. Large traps caught significantly more males of both species. 6 The relative higher male catches in the marginal zone of the sticky traps is probably related to males landing behaviour in the vicinity of the pheromone source. 7 The shape and size of the trap did not affect the bias of the estimates of male catches. However, the plate traps provided higher precision. Both bias and precision improved with increasing dose.  相似文献

1 Monitoring studies of pine sawflies with pheromone traps were performed for the first time in Germany. Pheromone traps baited with species‐specific pheromone substances were installed in pine forests at different locations in Bavaria, Brandenburg and Lower Saxony during two years. 2 It was possible to track the flight phenology of Diprion pini, Gilpinia pallida and Neodiprion sertifer reliably and to get information about the number of generations of these species in 1997 and 1998. 3 A clear relationship between trap catch and population density could not be detected, but qualitative changes in trap catch caused by different density levels were observed. 4 For D. pini, trap catches were different among endemic populations of different forest types. Furthermore, catches of males reflected the results from the regular cocoon collections by foresters during the previous winter. 5 For N. sertifer, trap catches in endemic populations were well separated from trap catches on sites with higher sawfly densities. However, no significant correlation between trap catch and sawfly density or defoliation level could be found. These results suggest that the efficacy of the pheromone traps probably varied with biological features (sex ratio, density level, immigration) of the particular population.  相似文献

Abstract We evaluated the attraction of Monochamus alternatus Hope (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), Dryocoetes luteus Blandford and Orthotomicus erosus Wollaston (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) to multiple-funnel traps baited with the pine volatiles, ethanol and (+)-α-pinene and the bark beetle pheromones, ipsenol and ipsdienol. M. alternatus were attracted to traps baited with ethanol and (+)-α-pinene but not those baited with ipsdienol and ipsenol. Ipsdienol and ipsenol decreased catches of M. alternatus in traps baited with ethanol and (+)-α-pinene. Traps baited with either binary combinations of ethanol and (+)-α-pinene or ipsdienol and ipsenol were attractive to D. luteus and O. erosus. The addition of ipsenol and ipsdienol to traps baited with ethanol and (+)-α-pinene synergized attraction of O. erosus but not D. luteus.  相似文献

The web-spinning sawflies of the genus Cephalcia Panzer (Hymenoptera, Pamphiliidae) are usually monitored by sampling prepupae in soil and by catching adults with visual traps, including yellow sticky traps. However, adult catches have never been compared with the actual density of prepupae. In this paper, a relationship is presented between the catches of Cephalcia arvensis Panzer adults (mostly males) and the number of prepupae ready to emerge (pronymphs) in an outbreak area of spruce forest (Picea abies Karsten) in the Southern Alps (Asiago, Italy). A significant linear relationship between the logarithmic estimates of the two variables was found. The model includes a spatial autoregressive parameter because adult catches were spatially correlated. The relationship allows to know whether or not the defoliation threshold of 20 pronymphs/m2 in spring samples is being exceeded, based on the number of adults caught on yellow sticky traps (defoliation threshold of 14.26 adults/trap). The variance not explained by the model is probably due to the flight behaviour of adult males, to the low precision of the estimated pronymph density at low population levels, and to the attraction of males by few females that are trapped and remain alive. The model was validated in a large monitoring programme of undamaged alpine spruce forests and allowed detection of two newly infested stands out of six that were considered at risk of defoliation, because of adult catch exceeded the threshold. Low adult catches were always associated with absence of defoliation. Our conclusion is that trapping of adult sawflies is a cheaper and easier monitoring method than prepupae sampling in the soil. This makes earlier detection of outbreaks possible, and consequently more efficient control.  相似文献

Nocturnal insects show phototactic behavior. Interestingly, males are caught by light traps more often than females in many species. In the present study, the male-biased capture in light traps in the field was evaluated to test the hypothesis that male-biased capture was associated with the reproductive activities of Spodoptera exigua. During a 16-wk. period in 2011, a total of 5075 moths caught by light traps in the field revealed a significant male-biased capture. However, the sex ratio of the natural population was not significantly different from 1:1 from July to October 2011. The ratio of moths caught per hour by light traps showed that females were captured in the first half of the night, whereas the peak capture by light traps for males occurred in the second half of the night. Among the captured adults, the percentage of unmated females was significantly lower than that of the mated females and males. Experiments in the laboratory indicated that the time of activities for both sexes was consistent with the active patterns of oviposition and copulation. The percentage of flight-to-light of the unmated females was significantly lower than that of the mated females and males. Thus, the lower capture of the unmated females, which is associated with reduced positive phototactic responses of S. exigua, probably is one of the reasons resulting in the male-biased sex ratio in light traps.  相似文献

The Japanese pine sawyer, Monochamus alternatus Hope (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), is known to be the primary vector of pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Buhrer) Nickle that causes pine wilt disease. Adult activity of M. alternatus caught in a pheromone trap on Jeju Island of Korea showed a bimodal form with the first peak in mid to late June and the second peak in mid to late September. The two peaks were separated between mid and late August, showing a valley. Accumulated degree‐days predicted that the emergence of the second generation adults could be possible just before the second peak. But actually no adults of the second generation occurred in the field development experiments of M. alternatus in 2016 and 2017. Pine trees without oleoresin flow (namely dying trees by the infection of pinewood nematode) were abundant during early July to early August. The bimodal adult activity pattern of M. alternatus could be partially explained by the competitive attractiveness of dying trees against pheromone traps, when we accepted the assumption that dying pine trees attract strongly M. alternatus.  相似文献

Overwintered adult apple blossom weevils, Anthonomus pomorum (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), colonise apple trees, Malus domestica Borkh. (Rosaceae), in early spring. Information gained from a suitable monitoring technique could serve as a guide to determining the accurate timing for control measures. To assess tree colonisation by flight and crawling, Plexiglas flight traps and commercial screen traps developed for different curculionid species were used. Refuges were mimicked by a newly designed shelter trap based on transparent bubble wrap. The trap catches were contrasted to the limb jarring technique. Microclimate and weather conditions were determined over a trial period of one and a half months. The shelter traps caught a high number of weevils irrespective of weather conditions, and thus performed better than both flight and screen traps. The temperature level within the shelter traps was slightly, but significantly, higher than on the trunk, indicating that weevils exploit microclimatic differences and occupy thermally favourable refuges. The seasonal culmination of colonisation as determined by shelter traps coincided with that as determined by the two methods used to monitor weevil movement towards host trees (flight traps and screen traps). The data indicated that not only flight, but also crawling as quantified by the screen traps contributes substantially to spring colonisation. Captures by all three types of traps over the spring season were significantly positively correlated with each other, but in most respects not with the results of the limb jarring. We conclude that the newly designed shelter trap will be useful for accurately monitoring the seasonal course of colonisation and holds promise for determining the timing of interventions.  相似文献

A fusion of information technology (IT) and sex pheromone monitoring provides a remote sensing IT-pheromone trap to monitor Oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, populations in apple orchards. Once a male of G. molesta is attracted to its sex pheromone lure in the trap, an infrared sensor installed at the funnel-shaped orifice generates an electric signal. The signal is processed in a central processor and then transferred to an internet site via a code division multiple access protocol. The signal also contains information about when each male is caught. Daily trapping information from different localities is archived in a website. The accuracy of IT-pheromone traps in detecting male catches was shown by a high correlation (r = 0.956) between the generated IT signals and actual numbers of males caught in the trap in apple orchards. Using this IT-pheromone trap, G. molesta in apple orchards was monitored for one year. These data were compared with monitoring data obtained from a conventional wing type-based sticky trap containing the identical sex pheromone lure. Both showed four characteristic adult peaks from April to September and were significantly correlated (r = 0.695). IT-pheromone traps also gave real-time signals of male catches in the field. These real-time signals of male catches showed a characteristic diel attraction rhythm from 4 pm to midnight. The diel rhythm of the male response to the sex pheromone started earlier in the evening in the spring season compared to mid and late seasons. This study provides a novel sex pheromone trap for G. molesta to monitor its population in field conditions in real-time without visiting or counting. The field monitoring data can be accessed any time through a designated internet website.  相似文献

1. The flight behaviour of adult merolimnic insects was studied on the first order limestone stream Leutra (Thuringia, Germany) using sticky traps. The focus of the present study was on testing the colonisation cycle hypothesis of Müller (1954) and on the small-scale dispersal of adult merolimnic insects. 2. A high number of sticky traps was used to guarantee a proper statistical analysis of the data and exclude effects of the heterogeneous environment on flight behaviour. 3. The flight behaviour of Leuctra hippopus, Nemoura cambrica, Nemoura flexuosa, Protonemura nitida, Protonemura praecox (Plecoptera), and Baetis rhodani (Ephemeroptera) was studied. 4. Specific flight corridors were observed for P. praecox, Nemoura spp., L. hippopus and B. rhodani. 5. Comparison of the catches on sticky traps set perpendicular to the water showed no significant flight upstream in any of the taxa studied. Thus, the results do not support the hypothesis of the colonisation cycle.  相似文献

A two-year sampling study (1992–93) in a flat storage of shelled corn showed that the larger pirate bugLyctocoris campestris (F.) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae), can be detected by relative sampling techniques as early as the second week of May. The perceived seasonal pattern ofL. campestris varied with trapping method. Of the three relative sampling methods used, probe traps consistently captured more bugs of both sexes than cardboard traps in the grain and sticky flight traps. Probe traps showed a third degree polynomial trend through the season. On the other hand, flight traps were effective for monitoringL. campestris population during early and mid-summer when temperatures were high, but the effectiveness declined during late summer and early fall. Cardboard traps showed the opposite trend to those of flight traps, with increasingL. campestris abundance during the fall when bugs sought refuge as temperature decreased. Sampling date and environmental factors, including grain moisture content, air and grain temperatures were correlated with trap capture. Earlier work reported thatL. campestris showed a highly female biased sex ratio in the field as opposed to a 1∶1 sex ratio in laboratory colonies. The present study found that the estimate of sex ratios in the field can differ with trapping methods. Of the three relative sampling methods used, flight and cardboard traps, in most cases, showed no deviation from a 1∶1, sex ratio. Probe traps, however, indicated a highly female biased sex ratio in field populations. Absolute sampling using a 1140 ml cup sampler also showed no deviation from a 1∶1 sex ratio in the field population. The data suggested that relative sampling methods may be inappropriate for sex ratio estimation in the field. Thus, an absolute sampling method is required for determination of the true field sex ratio ofL. campestris. Analyses of dispersion patterns showed that both males and females ofL. campestris exhibit an aggregated spatial distribution in the grain. This article reports the results of research only. Seasonal environments impose developmental time constraints on insects which can be reflected in body size and sex ratio. By tracking these two aspects in recently emerged adults of 10 species of an odonate community in a number of lakes, we investigated whether (a) body size in both sexes decreased as the flight season progressed and whether this led to seasonal changes in sexual size dimorphism (SSD); (b) SSD patterns were related to mating systems; (c) biases in sex ratio could be explained by mortality rates associated with the largest sex (e.g. in species with male-biased SSD, a female-biased sex ratio; in species with female-biased SSD, a male-biased sex ratio). Our results indicated that adults in most species, but not all, tend to reach a smaller body size as the season progressed. However, the opposite pattern was found in a few species. Predictions about the relation between SSD and mating systems were confirmed: a female-biased SSD in nonterritorial species and monomorphism for territorial species. However, predictions of biases in sex ratio according to SSD were not met in all species. Interestingly, changes in body size and SSD along the season were lake-specific in two species in which these patterns could be examined. These results, although partially supportive of environmental and sexual selection patterns acting on size and sex ratio as documented in other odonate species, indicate that we are still far from understanding seasonal constrains in these animals.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study, the effects of using three different sampling methods (yellow sticky traps, beating tray, organdy bags) on estimating the distribution through the canopy of the summer‐form adults of the pistachio psyllid (Agonoscena targionii (Licht.)) was investigated throughout the vegetative period. The traps or bags were hung at two heights in the tree canopy, 3.5 m above ground and 2 m above ground. Psyllids were counted weekly, and their sex determined. Adult abundance varied during the study, but all three sampling methods indicated that densities were higher in the upper canopy than the lower canopy. The percentage of females having mature eggs was lowest in late May, and highest in June and September. Sex ratios were highly variable among sampling dates and among sampling methods, at both canopy heights. Sex ratios in bags tended to be more female‐biased in the lower canopy than in the upper canopy. Sticky trap counts were significantly male biased, more so in the upper canopy than in the lower canopy. Mean sex ratios differed significantly between bag and sticky trap samples at both heights, but did not differ significantly between tray and bag samples at either height. In addition, for a given tray or bag count, sticky trap catch of males was larger than catch of females, and was larger in the upper canopy than in the lower canopy. Bag counts (psyllids per leaflet) strongly increased with tray count.

Of the three sampling methods described here, the bag samples provided direct estimates of psyllid numbers per leaflet, but this method is extremely time consuming. Bag counts (psyllids per leaflet) increased with tray count, suggesting that beat trays can be used to estimate absolute densities.  相似文献
