Two models for predicting the hydration status of lichens were developed as a first step towards a mechanistic lichen productivity model. A biophysical model included the water potential of the air, derived from measurements of air temperature, relative humidity and species-specific rate constants for desiccation and rehydration. A reduced physical model, included only environmental parameters, assuming instantaneous equilibration between the lichen and the air. These models were developed using field and laboratory data for three green algal lichens: the foliose epiphytic Platismatia glauca (L.) W. Culb., the fruticose epiphytic Alectoria sarmentosa (Ach.) Ach. and the fruticose, terricolous and mat-forming Cladina rangiferina (L.) Weber ex Wigg. The models were compared and validated for the same three species using data from a habitat with a different microclimate. Both models predicted the length and timing of lichen hydration periods, with those for A. sarmentosa and P. glauca being highly accurate—nearly 100% of the total wet time was predicted by both the biophysical and physical models. These models also predicted an accurate timing of the total realized wet time for A. sarmentosa and P. glauca when the lichens were wet. The model accuracy was lower for C. rangiferina compared to the epiphytes, both for the total realized wet time and for the accuracy of the timing for the hydration period. These results demonstrate that the stochastic and continually varying hydration status of lichens can be simulated from biophysical data. Further development of these models to also include water-related activity, light and temperature conditions during the hydration events will then be a potent tool to assess potential lichen productivity in landscapes and habitats of various microclimatic conditions.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to compare the retting of moist flax preserved with sulphur dioxide with that of green dried flax, using whole straw samples. When retted in water at either a constant 20°C or 28°C dried flax was fully retted after 15 and 10 days respectively whereas the sulphur dioxide treated flax (20 g sulphur dioxide kg“1 flax DM) had undergone almost no retting after 20 days at 20dC or 10 days at 28°C. Pre-soaking the treated flax for 24 h in water and changing the acidified water, raised the pH of the retting liquor to a more normal value but did not significantly increase the rate of retting. Addition of the pectinase enzyme preparation ‘Flaxzyme’ to retting liquor at the rate of either 1.5 g kg-1 or 3.0 g kg-1 water, and at a constant temperature of 20°C, substantially increased the rate of retting of both sulphur dioxide treated and dried flax. Optimum degree of retting was achieved at 24 h with the treated flax and at 97 h with the dried flax. Pre-rinsing of the sulphur dioxide treated straw only served to reduce the rate of retting. It was concluded that natural water retting of sulphur dioxide treated flax is retarded by the presence of acidic residues of sulphur dioxide, while enzyme retting is enhanced by these. In further smaller scale experiments using bundles of cut flax straw Flaxzyme was added at concentrations ranging from 0–8.0 ml litre 1 to containers containing flax in water at ratios from 1:10 to 1: 600 flax:water and the producion of galacturonic acid was used as an indicator of retting progress. Retting took place more rapidly at higher flax to water ratios for a given enzyme concentration. This effect was attributed to the lower pH of higher flax to water ratios which created pH conditions closer to the pH optimum for the retting enzymes. When enzyme retting was compared at a range of buffered pH's the optimum was pH 4.0. At a buffered pH of 4.0 and a temperature of 19°C, retting of sulphur dioxide treated moist flax (flax to water ratio of 1:10) was achieved with Flaxzyme concentrations as low as 0.5 ml litre”‘,much lower than the previously reported minimum of 3.0 ml litre’.  相似文献

The variable internally transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the rRNA gene cluster, and the termini of the large and small subunit genes, were amplified from 231 specimens of the lichen-forming fungusParmelia sulcata from the UK and Spain. Amplification products comprised three distinct size groups of 580, 622 and 835 base pairs (bp). Analyses of the collections from England, Wales and central Spain established the 622 bp genotype as the most widespread, and the 835 bp genotype as the next most frequent. The size difference was due to a group I intron at the 3 end of the small subunit. The relative frequencies of the three genotypes were consistent between long established sites in Spain and the UK. The frequencies of the different size classes were examined in the vegetatively reproducing populations recolonizing following the amelioration of sulphur dioxide air pollution. Populations ofP. sulcata from long established sites where sulphur dioxide levels are known to have risen and then fallen contained two genotypes. Populations from recolonising sites whereP. sulcata had previously been lost consisted of a single genotype (622bp). This technology provides a powerful tool for testing hypotheses relating to the individuality and population structure of lichens, and has implications for lichen conservation.  相似文献

Abstract. Plant productivity is limited by mineral nutrient availability in many boreal forest ecosystems. This study is an analysis of the growth responses of components of a boreal plant community (cryptogams, herbaceous and woody perennials, the dominant shrubs Salix glauca (grey willow) and Betula glandulosa (bog birch) and the dominant tree Picea glauca (white spruce), to the addition of an NPK fertilizer over a nine-year period. The study was carried out in a low-nutrient boreal forest ecosystem in the Yukon territory in northwestern Canada. The following predictions were tested: (1) that there would be an overall increase in abundance (measured either as cover, density, or dry mass) of all components of the vegetation, (2) that vegetation composition would change as more competitive species increased in abundance and (3) that initial community changes in response to fertilization would be transient. In general, all predictions were found to be true. Species composition changed rapidly in response to fertilizer. Graminoids (e.g. Festuca altaica) and some dicots (e.g. Mertensia paniculata and Achillea millefolium) increased in cover, while other dicots (e.g. Anemone parviflora), dwarf shrubs (e.g. Arctostaphylos uvaursi), bryophytes and lichens declined. There was a significant increase in the growth rate of the two dominant shrubs and of Picea, but not in the cone crop or seed production by Picea. Surveys after 1 or 2 years showed responses by the vegetation but more stable patterns of response did not emerge until after 5 or 6 years. There were consistent and directional changes in the percent cover of some of the herbaceous species on control plots. Growth rates of Salix and Betula varied considerably from year to year, independently of treatment. Long-term studies are essential if we are to understand the role of nutrient limitation in this ecosystem.  相似文献

根据对新疆博格达山地面生地衣群落27个样点(20 m×20 m)调查的数据,以各地衣种的盖度为指标结合双向指示种分析方法(TWINSPAN)和除趋势对应分析法(DCA)对博格达山地面生地衣群落进行数量分类并分析了群落结构特征及其多样性和相似性。采用典范对应分析法(CCA)对各群落的物种分布格局与环境因子的关系进行了探讨。结果表明,TWINSPAN分析和DCA排序将分布在博格达山的37种地面生地衣分为以下5个群丛。群丛1:膜地卷(Peltigera membranacea)+伴藓大孢蜈蚣衣(Physconia muscigena)群丛;群丛2:地卷(Peltigera rufescens)+伴藓大孢蜈蚣衣(Physconia muscigena)群丛;群丛3:裂边地卷(Peltigera degenii)+平盘软地卷(Peltigera elisabethae)群丛;群丛4:喇叭石蕊(Cladonia pyxidata)+犬地卷(Peltigera canina)群丛;群丛5:盾鳞衣(Placidium squamulosum)+缠结茸枝衣(Seirophora contortuplicata)群丛。物种多样性以群丛4最大为3.427;群丛1最小为0.672;群丛1和群丛4间的相似性最高为0.889,群丛3和群丛4相似性系数最低为0.607。CCA排序结果反映,该地区地面生地衣的分布受到森林植被郁闭度、人为干扰、光照强度的影响,而地表植被盖度和土壤pH等因素的影响不大。  相似文献

A detailed karyotype analysis was made on the somatic complement ofPicea rubens andP. glauca. B-chromosomes were observed in someP. glauca populations. The karyotypes are generally asymmetrical with most of the chromosomes having median to median-submedian centromeres.Picea glauca chromosomes 2, 3, 7, and 8 have secondary constriction on their short arm and chromosome 10 has a secondary constriction on the long arm. Chromosome 3 was the most easily identifiable, as it has two secondary constrictions located on the short arm. InP. rubens, all the chromosomes but chromosomes 8 and 9 have one to four distinctive secondary constrictions. In general, the diagrammatic comparisons show a high degree of similarity amongP. mariana, P. rubens, andP. glauca. GenomicP. mariana probe strongly hybridized to dots of genomic DNA fromP. rubens andP. glauca indicating that there is a high sequence homology among these three species. The synchronizing agent, hydroxyurea was used at different concentrations to enhance the mitotic index of cell suspensions derived from embryogenic cultures. Hydroxyurea at 1.25 mM increased significantly the mitotic index. An increase of hydroxyurea from 1.25 mM to 5 mM and 10 mM resulted in a steady decrease of mitotic index.  相似文献

为了解物种和基物偏好对地衣元素水平的影响,测定了采集于河北太行山区6个地点的6种地衣体内的16种元素(Al、Ba、Cd、Cr、Cu、Fe、Mn、Mo、Na、P、S、Sc、Sr、Ti、V和Zn)的含量。这6种地衣包括3种石生地衣(鸡冠胶衣Collema cristatum、中国石黄衣Xanthoria mandschurica和淡腹黄梅Xanthoparmelia mexicana),2种土生地衣(莲座石蕊Cladonia pocillum和石果衣Endocarpon pusillum),及1种树生地衣(毛边黑蜈蚣衣Phaeophyscia hispidula)。主成分分析(PCA)和费里德曼双向秩方差分析(Friedman检验)结果显示,物种和基物偏好对地衣体内元素含量的影响显著,而地点的影响不显著。树生地衣累积的大气源元素(P、S和Zn)高于土生和石生地衣。土生地衣体内的地壳源元素(Al、Ba、Fe、Mn、Mo、Na、Sc、Sr、Ti和V)和大气源元素Cr的含量最高。石生地衣的大气源元素(P、S和Zn)含量近于土生地衣,但地壳源元素含量较低;3种石生地衣在这些元素的含量方面差异不大。这些结果表明以地衣化学组成监测大气元素沉降的研究需慎重考虑物种及基物偏好的影响。  相似文献

Some of the principal advances in our knowledge of lichens made since the time of E. M. Holmes are briefly reviewed. Floristic studies on British lichens have continued and distribution maps of particular species are now being produced. These studies have shown that many species have disappeared from areas affected by air pollution by sulphur dioxide. Lichen taxonomy has seen the acceptance of chemical characters as valid taxonomic criteria, and the realization that ascus types, ascocarp structure and ascocarp ontogeny are more important at the generic level than ascospore characters alone. Lichens are not now thought of as a single taxonomic group but as fungi related to various orders of non-lichenized Ascomycotina, united only in their common method of nutrition (symbiosis with algae); some lichenized and non-lichenized species with identical types of ascocarps are consequently being treated as members of the same genus. Considerable progress has been made in describing lichen communities characteristic of particular substrates and situations and in understanding the factors which may affect the occurrence of particular species. Lichens have proved to be particularly valuable indicators of mean air pollution levels and scales for the estimation of these levels based solely on the lichen vegetation have been devised. Physiological and ultrastructural studies on lichens have progressed rapidly in the last decade. Carbohydrates have been demonstrated to move from the algal to the fungal component and the mobile carbohydrates found to differ in lichens with different genera of algae. The algal and fungal partners have been isolated and studied in pure culture. Most attempts to synthesize lichens have met with little success but in 1970 a thallus was formed from its components in culture. It is now possible to grow some lichens under controlled conditions in the laboratory and these techniques, together with transplant experiments, will clearly assume considerable importance in the investigation of taxonomic and ecological problems in the future. Little progress has been made in the study of lichen cytology or the factors affecting the establishment of lichen thalli. Lichens constitute an important part of some ecosystems and their decline due to anthropogenic influences is consequently a matter of concern for all biologists.  相似文献

Relations between irradiance (I) and lichen growth were investigated for five macro‐lichens growing at two sites in Sweden. The lichens represented different mycobiont–photobiont associations, two morphologies (foliose, fruticose) and two life forms (epiphytic, terricolous). The lichens were transplanted at two geographically distant sites in Sweden (1000 km apart) from Sept 1995 to Sept 1996 in their typical microhabitats, where microclimate and growth were followed. Between April/May and Sept 96, the terricolous species had a dry matter gain of 0·2 to 0·4 g (g DW)–1 and the epiphytes 0·01 to 0·02 g (g DW)–1. When related to area, growth amounted to 30 to 70 g m?2 for the terricolous species and to 1 to 4 g m?2 for the epiphytes. There was a strong correlation between growth and intercepted irradiance when the lichens were wet (Iwet), with 0·2 to 1·1 g lichen dry matter being produced per MJ solar energy. Across the 10 sets of transplants, light use efficiencies of dry matter yield (e) ranged between 0·5 and 2%, using an energy equivalent of 17·5 kJ g?1 of lichen dry matter. The higher productivity of the terricolous species was due to longer periods with thallus water contents sufficient for metabolic activity and because of the higher mean photon flux densities of their microhabitat. A four‐fold difference in photosynthetic capacity among the species was also important. It is concluded that lichen dry matter gain was primarily related to net carbon gain during metabolically active periods, which was determined by light duration, photon flux density and photosynthetic capacity.  相似文献

 Sulphur formation by the obligately chemolithoautotrophic Thiobacillus o and Thiobacillus neapolitanus was studied in aerobic, substrate-limited continuous cultures. The performance of transient-state and steady-state cultures was compared using different methods for measuring sulphur production. Below a dilution rate (D) of 0.3 h-1 (at 50% air saturation), sulphate-producing steady states were obtained, and cultures grown with sulphide or thiosulphate (at D=0.06 h-1) showed similar characteristics (e.g. cell yields, oxidation capacities and CO2-fixation capacities). Elemental sulphur was a major product above D=0.3 h-1, but steady states were difficult to achieve, because of adherence of sulphur to the fermentor surfaces and the accumulation of sulphide. These problems could be circumvented using transient-state experiments of 1 h. It was then found that elemental sulphur was formed under oxygen limitation or at high substrate load. The rates of sulphur formation obtained by sulphur analysis agreed with the values calculated from stoichiometric balances. Sulphide and thiosulphate proved to be equivalent substrates for both Thiobacillus species during elemental sulphur formation under the conditions tested. It is concluded that transient-state cultures of thiobacilli, pregrown as sulphate-producing steady-state cultures, provide experimental conditions for the quantitative assessment of sulphur formation from (labile) sulphide and from thiosulphate. Pinus banksiana andPicea glauca inoculated or not with the ectomycorrhizal fungusSuillus luteus were grown in a sandy loam soil containing a range of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn concentrations. Ectomycorrhizal colonization rates were significantly reduced on Pinus and Picea seedlings by the heavy metals, particularly Cd and Ni. Needle tissue metal concentrations were lower in ectomycorrhizal seedlings at low soil metal concentrations. However, at higher soil concentrations, heavy metal concentrations of needle tissue were similar in ectomycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plants. The growth of nonmycorrhizal seedlings exposed to heavy metals was reduced compared to those inoculated withSuillus luteus. Apparently ectomycorrhizal colonization can protect Pinus and Picea seedlings from heavy metal toxicity at low or intermediate soil concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn.  相似文献

Ant communities in tropical forests may be governed by varying assembly mechanisms, depending on the particular habitat investigated. We compared phylogenetic diversity and structure across two forest biomes (dry and humid) and two vertical layers (arboreal and terricolous) in ant communities in Madagascar, and assessed the influence of invasive species on this community structure. We estimated phylogenetic signal and correlated evolution for habitat and several functional traits and tested for conservatism in relevant functional and habitat traits. Ancestral states were reconstructed to illuminate the evolution of habitat traits. All analyses utilized phylogenies estimated from newly generated data from three nuclear markers for 290 Malagasy ant taxa. Dry forests, although lower in species richness, were found to support equally high lineage diversity as humid forests. In contrast, phylogenetic diversity was much lower in arboreal than in terricolous communities. We observed significant phylogenetic clustering in the combined humid forest and in the arboreal–humid, arboreal–dry and terricolous–humid communities, whereas the combined dry forest community was overdispersed. Among ant communities in Madagascar, overdispersion and competition therefore may be more prevalent in dry forest, and habitat filtering may be more dominant in humid forest. Excluding invasive ant species had little overall effect on community structure. All investigated traits showed low to intermediate conservatism; strong support for correlated evolution was found for increased eye size and an arboreal lifestyle. Habitat transitions from humid to dry and from terricolous to arboreal occurred more frequently, and ancestors of most lineages were predicted to be terricolous or humid‐forest adapted. We conclude that most Malagasy ant clades first colonized humid forests and subsequently transitioned into dry forests, indicating that previous hypotheses on the evolution of Madagascar's hyperdiverse biota may not apply to ants and other arthropods.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To carry out a prospective combined quantitative analysis of the associations between all cause mortality and ambient particulate matter and sulphur dioxide. DESIGN: Analysis of time series data on daily number of deaths from all causes and concentrations of sulphur dioxide and particulate matter (measured as black smoke or particles smaller than 10 microns in diameter (PM10)) and potential confounders. SETTING: 12 European cities in the APHEA project (Air Pollution and Health: a European Approach). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Relative risk of death. RESULTS: In western European cities it was found that an increase of 50 micrograms/m3 in sulphur dioxide or black smoke was associated with a 3% (95% confidence interval 2% to 4%) increase in daily mortality and the corresponding figure for PM10 was 2% (1% to 3%). In central eastern European cities the increase in mortality associated with a 50 micrograms/m3 change in sulphur dioxide was 0.8% (-0.1% to 2.4%) and in black smoke 0.6% (0.1% to 1.1%). Cumulative effects of prolonged (two to four days) exposure to air pollutants resulted in estimates comparable with the one day effects. The effects of both pollutants were stronger during the summer and were mutually independent. CONCLUSIONS: The internal consistency of the results in western European cities with wide differences in climate and environmental conditions suggest that these associations may be causal. The long term health impact of these effects is uncertain, but today''s relatively low levels of sulphur dioxide and particles still have detectable short term effects on health and further reductions in air pollution are advisable.  相似文献

The expansion of coal-fired power stations in South Africa has resulted in growing environmental concerns as they are the largest emitters of sulphur dioxide (SO2). Sulphur dioxide emissions from power plants pose a potential threat to avian populations. However, the effect of SO2 pollution on bird communities is poorly understood. Using point counts we investigated the relationships of bird species richness and species-specific density with SO2 concentrations around Matimba power station. Environmental parameters were derived from remotely sensed data and data reduction was performed using principal component analysis. Generalised linear mixed models were then used to infer the relationships of bird species richness and species-specific densities with SO2 concentrations and the environmental variables. Our results revealed that SO2-polluted air had no influence on bird species richness and densities in our study sites, but SO2 levels were below annual national ambient air quality standards. Vegetation productivity was found to have a greater influence on species densities than SO2 pollution. Monitoring of bird population changes around Matimba power station once neighbouring Medupi power station is fully operational is recommended, as SO2 content of the air will increase significantly, and species may be sensitive to this increase in SO2 levels.  相似文献

On a semiarid sand grassland (Festucetum vaginatae) colonised by juniper (Juniperus communis L.) shrubs terricolous lichens and mosses segregate strongly between microhabitats: certain species grow in the open grassland, others almost exclusively in the shade of junipers. The contrasting irradiances of these microhabitats influence much the metabolism of these organisms, and thus affect their small-scale distribution. This was confirmed by determining the efficiency of photochemical energy conversion by measuring chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters. In the open grassland maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2, Fv/Fm) declined from the humid spring to the hot and dry summer in all species, and this was caused by an increase in base fluorescence (F0), but not by the decrease in fluorescence maximum (Fm). In summer, mosses and lichens growing in the open grassland generally possessed lower Fv/Fm than cryptogams growing in the shade cast by juniper shrubs. Thus mosses and lichens in the open grassland suffer lasting reduction in photochemical efficiency in summer, which is avoided in the shade of junipers. Juniper shrubs indeed influence the composition and small-scale spatial pattern of sympatric terricolous lichen and moss communities by—among others—providing a shelter against high light in summer.  相似文献

Germination of conidia of Diplocarpon rosae Wolf is inhibited in a solution made by dissolving 35 p.p.m. sulphur dioxide in water. Inhibition is permanent after exposure for 3 hr. Gaseous SO2 in air under controlled conditions at 100μg./m3 markedly reduces infection of rose leaves after exposure for 2 days. Blackspot of roses is checked or eliminated in areas where SO2 pollution of air exceeds 100/μ./m.3.  相似文献

Levels of the stilbene glucosides astringin and isorhapontin, the main constitutive antifungal compounds in bark tissues of spruce trees, were not altered in young Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr. or Picea abies (L.) Karst. trees exposed to sulphur dioxide and ozone in the Liphook Forest Fumigation Project. These trees had received computer-controlled fumigation treatments with two levels of SO2 (long-term means 13 and 22nmol mol?1) or one level of O3 (1–3.times ambient), or a combination of these treatments, from spring until December. Resistance of bark tissues from these trees to colonization by the root- and butt-rot pathogen Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref., assessed in vitro using excised stem lengths, was not significantly altered in fumigated plants compared with those exposed to ambient pollutant levels only. This study therefore provided no evidence for altered disease resistance in P. abies and P. sitchensis trees exposed to SO2 and O3.  相似文献

Arctic and alpine terricolous lichens are adapted to harsh environments and are tolerant to extremely low temperatures when metabolically inactive. However, there are reports indicating that freezing can be lethal to metabolically active lichens. With a projected warmer and more unstable climate, winter precipitation at high latitudes will fall more frequently as rain, causing snowmelt and encapsulating terricolous lichens in ice or exposing them to large temperature fluctuations. Lichens are a major winter food source for reindeer in most parts of the circumpolar region. A laboratory experiment tested how three hydrated reindeer forage lichen species covered by snow, encapsulated in ice, or uncovered responded to storage at freezing temperatures and subsequent warming. Photosynthetic performance (maximal fluorescence of dark-adapted samples and net photosynthetic rates) was significantly lower in lichens not insulated by snow or ice, whereas there were few differences between the snow and ice treatments. It is suggested that snow and ice provide sufficiently moist environments to improve extracellular and reduce intracellular ice nucleation activity. Ice encapsulation, which is often lethal to vascular plants, did not have any negative effects on the studied lichens. The results indicate that complete snow and ice melt followed by refreezing can be detrimental to terricolous lichen ecosystems. Reduced lichen biomass will have a negative effect both on reindeer winter survival and the indigenous peoples who herd reindeer.  相似文献

Wolinella succinogenes can grow at the expense of sulphur reduction by formate. The enzymes involved in the catalysis of this catabolic reaction have been investigated. From the results the following conclusions are drawn: 1. The enzyme isolated as a sulphide dehydrogenase from the cytoplasmic membrane of W. succinogenes is the functional sulphur reductase that operates in the electron transport from formate to sulphur. 2. The enzyme (Mr 200,000) consists essentially of one type of subunit with the Mr 85,000 and contains equal amounts of free iron and sulphide (120 mol/g protein), but no heme. It represents the first functional sulphur reductase ever isolated. 3. The electron transport chain catalyzing sulphur reduction by formate consists merely of formate dehydrogenase and sulphur reductase. A lipophilic quinone which mediates the transfer of electrons between enzymes in other chains, is apparently not involved. This is the first known example of a phosphorylative electron transport chain that operates without a quinone. 4.
