Forest fragmentation is considered by many to be a primary cause of the current biodiversity crisis. The underlying mechanisms are poorly known, but a potentially important one is associated with altered thermal conditions within the remaining forest patches, especially at forest edges. Yet, large uncertainty remains about the effect of fragmentation on forest temperature, as it is unclear whether temperature decreases from forest edge to forest interior, and whether this local gradient scales up to an effect of fragmentation (landscape attribute) on temperature. We calculated the effect size (correlation coefficient) of distance from forest edge on air temperature, and tested for differences among forest types surrounded by different matrices using meta-analysis techniques. We found a negative edge-interior temperature gradient, but correlation coefficients were highly variable, and significant only for temperate and tropical forests surrounded by a highly contrasting open matrix. Nevertheless, it is unclear if these local-scale changes in temperature can be scaled up to an effect of fragmentation on temperature. Although it may be valid when considering “fragmentation” as forest loss only, the landscape-scale inference is not so clear when we consider the second aspect of fragmentation, where a given amount of forest is divided into a large number of small patches (fragmentation per se). Therefore, care is needed when assuming that fragmentation changes forest temperature, as thermal changes at forest edges depend on forest type and matrix composition, and it is still uncertain if this local gradient can be scaled up to the landscape.  相似文献

The role of nitrogen as a factor controllingphytoplankton biomass was studied in nutrientenrichment incubations in the laboratory using waterfrom pelagic region of two mesotrophic lakes ineastern Finland, Lake Kallavesi (in year 1994) andLake Juurusvesi (in year 1995). We used differentcombinations of phosphorus and nitrogen additions ina total of eight experiments. Furthermore, we includedDaphnia grazing treatment to the experimentaldesign in Lake Juurusvesi experiments. The nitrogentreatments did not increase chlorophyll aconcentration in any of the experiments compared withthe controls. Chlorophyll a content was highestin those nutrient treatments where phosphorus wasadded with or without nitrogen. Daphnia grazingdecreased chlorophyll a concentration comparedwith non-grazed treatments. In some cases grazing alsocaused higher ammonium concentrations. Theseexperiments, as well as the nutrient ratio of the lakewater used, suggest that phosphorus is likely tocontrol the amount of phytoplankton biomass. In the present study, trikatu, an herbal compound was evaluated for its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties with reference to cell mediated immune responses (delayed type hypersensitivity reaction), humoral immune response (haemagglutination titer and plaque forming assay), macrophage phagocytic index, circulating immune complex and inflammatory mediators in rats. For comparison purposes, indomethacin was used as a reference drug for anti-inflammatory studies. The results obtained in our study showed a significant decrease in cell mediated immune responses, humoral immune responses (haemagglutination titre and plaque forming assay) and macrophage phagocytic index in trikatu treated rats (1000 mg/kg/b.wt.) compared to control animals implying its immunosuppressive property. In addition, significant anti-inflammatory effects were observed in trikatu treated adjuvant induced arthritic rats by a reduction in the levels of circulating immune complexes and inflammatory mediators (TNF-alpha and Interleukin-1beta). Thus, in conclusion, our data suggest that trikatu could be considered as a potential anti-inflammatory agent for treating autoimmune inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid arthritis with immunosuppressive property.  相似文献

Three factors and their interaction effects are increasingly recognized as important determinants of nest predation: nest concealment, nest height, and predator type. The risk of nest predation is predicted to vary across these variables because of nest detectability and accessibility. In general, however, few studies examine how these three variables interact in relation to nest predation, focusing instead on either nest concealment or nest height (whereby predator identity is usually not known). In this study, we examine the role of nest concealment and nest height for nest survival using both artificial and natural nests in the superb fairy-wren (Malurus cyaneus). We indirectly identified potential predators through marks left on artificial eggs and footprints left on tracking tunnels. Predation level at artificial nests was lower than at natural nests, and this could be due to a failure of some nest predators to locate cryptic nests in the absence of cues provided by parental activity. Our results supported the prediction that exposed and concealed nests have different levels of nest predation, which can be explained by variation in predator type. Visual predators were only detected at exposed nests, and survival from visual predators was lower for high nests that were also exposed. However, olfactory predators were detected irrespective of nest height or nest concealment. Because rodents use olfaction to locate nests, this could explain the lack of association between nest concealment and predation outcome at low nests. In addition, rodent footmarks near nests were significantly associated with rodent tooth marks on eggs.  相似文献

Many studies have examined short-term changes in understory vegetation following prescribed burning. However, knowledge concerning longer term effects on both forest understory and overstory vegetation is lacking. This investigation was initiated to examine changes in understory (herbaceous and shrub) and overstory species composition almost four decades after logging and prescribed burning at the Pike Bay Experimental Forest in Minnesota. The experiment was established in 1964 with a randomized block design with four treatments: control (c); burned in spring 1967 (S0); burned in spring 1967 + repeat burn spring 1969 (S2); and burned in spring 1967 + repeat burn fall 1970 (F4). Overstory and understory species diversity indices and richness varied within and among treatments but were not strongly or consistently affected by the treatments. Multivariate analyses (multi-response block permutation procedures and non-metric multidimensional scaling) reveal some lingering effects of burning intensity and seasonal variation as well as some compositional differentiation among treatments, but only in the herb layer. In this environment, the effects of two repeated burnings (fire) have essentially disappeared for overstory and understory species diversity and community composition and have failed to convert an aspen-dominated stand to a coniferous stand (an original goal of the study).  相似文献

Aim Data shortages mean that conservation priorities can be highly sensitive to historical patterns of exploration. Here, we investigate the potential of regionally focussed species distribution models to elucidate fine‐scale patterns of richness, rarity and endemism. Location Eastern Arc Mountains, Tanzania and Kenya. Methods Generalized additive models and land cover data are used to estimate the distributions of 452 forest plant taxa (trees, lianas, shrubs and herbs). Presence records from a newly compiled database are regressed against environmental variables in a stepwise multimodel. Estimates of occurrence in forest patches are collated across target groups and analysed alongside inventory‐based estimates of conservation priority. Results Predicted richness is higher than observed richness, with the biggest disparities in regions that have had the least research. North Pare and Nguu in particular are predicted to be more important than the inventory data suggest. Environmental conditions in parts of Nguru could support as many range‐restricted and endemic taxa as Uluguru, although realized niches are subject to unknown colonization histories. Concentrations of rare plants are especially high in the Usambaras, a pattern mediated in models by moisture indices, whilst overall richness is better explained by temperature gradients. Tree data dominate the botanical inventory; we find that priorities based on other growth forms might favour the mountains in a different order. Main conclusions Distribution models can provide conservation planning with high‐resolution estimates of richness in well‐researched areas, and predictive estimates of conservation importance elsewhere. Spatial and taxonomic biases in the data are essential considerations, as is the spatial scale used for models. We caution that predictive estimates are most uncertain for the species of highest conservation concern, and advocate using models and targeted field assessments iteratively to refine our understanding of which areas should be prioritised for conservation.  相似文献

Montane temperate forests of the Cordillera de Piuchué Ecosystem Study, Isla Chiloé, Chile, are unaffected by air pollution, timber exploitation and agricultural clearing, and the current floristic assemblage has been relatively stable for the past 7500 years. The apparent absence of major perturbation at this location makes it an appropriate baseline site for ecosystem analysis. We measured soil bulk density, pH, soil organic C (SOC), total N, and NH4Cl–exchangeable cations (Ca+2, Mg+2, K+, Na+, Al+3) in 0–10 and 10–40 cm depth samples from 72 soil profiles representing three vegetation zones: Fitzroya cupressoides Forest, Pilgerodendron uvifera–Tepualia stipularis Forest, and Magellanic Moorland. Fitzroya and Pilgerodendron–Tepualia Forests were indistinguishable for all measured soil characteristics (P > 0.05, Dunn's multiple comparison test on ranked data); these included very high median SOC concentrations (0–10 cm = 49.6%) and correspondingly low bulk density values (0–10 cm = 0.07). Moorland soil median values (0-10 cm) were significantly higher for bulk density (0.12) and lower for SOC (28.5%), but not for total N (Forests = 0.99%, Moorland = 0.95%), resulting in lower median C:N ratios for the moorland (Forests = 44.7; Moorland = 30.3). Across both depths and all three vegetation zones regression analysis indicated that SOC was an excellent predictor (R2; = 0.93, P < 0.001) of (exchangeable Ca+2 + Mg+2 + K+ + Na+). Comparison with other old growth montane environments indicates that the Fitzroya and Pilgerodendron–Tepualia soil profiles are characterized by C:N ratios typical of other relatively unpolluted conifer forest soils (33.0–49.3). Soil profiles of representative polluted montane conifer forests have lower C:N ratios (16.2–23.5). Organic horizons from representative polluted montane conifer forests also retain fewer exchangeable base cations per unit SOC than are retained by organic horizons from the Cordillera de Piuchué forests.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to contribute to filling the knowledge gap in public opinion and knowledge about forest and its certification in Japan, as well as to identify key elements and the possible role of public opinion within integrated bottom-up policies, bridging the sectors of forest, environment and energy. For the study 1930 questionnaires were disseminated in a small town in early 2007. Results from the statistical analysis indicated that forest was perceived as an ecosystem with a protective function against e.g. soil erosion or flooding, rather than a place that might serve for wood production and providing jobs. Forest certification and bioenergy from forest were identified as key elements for future integrated bottom-up policies that need to concentrate on facilitating the linkage between forestry and renewable energy as well as on promoting environmentally sound management and forest certification.  相似文献

An igapó forest near the confluence of Rio Tarumã Mirim (Tarumãzinho) and Rio Negro has been studied. It is a typical ectotroph forest with a raw humus layer and suppressed litter decomposing activity by Higher (i.e., carpophore-producing) Fungi. The number of the latter is about one-fifth of that observed in the (anectotrophic) terra firme forest. All ectotrophically mycorrhizal fungi observed belonged in three families:Amanitaceae, Boletaceae, Russulaceae. Leguminosae are dominant, and of theseAldina latifolia andSwartzia cf.polyphylla were demonstrably ectomycorrhizal. The scarcity of mineral nutrients in the soils of igapó, campinarana and campina is overcome by direct cycling through ectomycorrhizae. This study examined whether oral glutamine supplementation abolishes some of the exercise-induced changes in lymphocyte functions following long-term intense exercise. A group of 16 marathon runners participating in The Copenhagen Marathon 1996 were placed randomly in either a placebo (n = 7) or a glutamine receiving group (n = 9). Each subject received four doses of either placebo or glutamine (100 mg · kg−1) administered at 0, 30, 60, and 90-min post-race. In the placebo group the plasma glutamine concentrations were lower than pre-race values during the post-exercise period [mean 647 (SEM 32) compared to 470 (SEM 22) μmol · l−1 90-min post-race, P < 0.05] whereas glutamine supplementation maintained the plasma glutamine concentration (at ∼750 μmol · l−1). Glutamine supplementation in vivo had no effect on the lymphokine activated killer (LAK) cell activity, the proliferative responses or the exercise-induced changes in concentrations or percentages of any of the leucocyte subpopulations examined. Glutamine addition in in vitro studies enhanced the proliferative response in both groups. These data would suggest that decreased plasma glutamine concentrations post-exercise are not responsible for exercise-induced decrease in LAK activity and that the influence of glutamine in vitro is not dependent on the plasma glutamine concentration at the time of sampling. The purpose of this study was to examine whether oral exposure to aluminum (Al) can affect the human immune system. Eighteen healthy volunteers (mean age 42, 28–57 yr) were divided into a test group (9 females, 4 males) and a referent group (3 females, 2 males). Over 6 weeks, the test subjects ingested 10 ml of antacid (aluminum hydroxide, 59 mg Al/ml) three times daily. Aluminum was analyzed in urine before and during the exposure period (ICP-MS). Blood samples were used for analysis of lymphocyte subpopulations, mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation and in vitro production and circulating plasma concentrations of immunoglobulin (Ig) A, IgG, IgM, interleukin (IL) -2 and IL-4. Urinary Al concentration in the test subjects was approximately 10- to 20-fold higher than in the referent group during exposure. This indicates that ingestion of an Al-containing antacid is associated with an Al absorption far above that originating from food and drinking water. In both referents and test subjects the lymphocyte subpopulations, lymphocyte proliferation and the in vitro Ig and IL production showed similar, time-dependent changes before as well as during the exposure period. No major differences were seen between the referent and test groups regarding the immune parameters, except for a slightly smaller CD8+CD45R0+ population (primed cytotoxic T-cells), in the exposed individuals as compared to the referents. The results also show that subjects on antacid therapy may constitute a suitable population for studying biological effects of high-dose oral exposure to Al.  相似文献

Seed predation is an important factor in determining the rate of tree establishment in abandoned agricultural land. Edges, through altered habitat use by small mammals, may influence the spatial pattern of forest regeneration in these successional sites. To determine the spatial pattern of seed predation across a forest-old field edge, we used a grid that began 30 m inside the forest and extended 60 m into the old field. Seed stations were placed at regular 10-m intervals and were monitored for removal of Acer rubrum seed for 50 d. This design was repeated over four years (1995–1998). Small mammal trapping was conducted in the final year of the study to determine the spatial pattern of seed predators within the site. Removal rates varied among the four years of the study with years of high and low removal rates. However, the spatial pattern of seed removal rate was similar in all years. Final survival ranged from 0.7–15.5% of seeds, with lower final survival in years with faster rates of seed removal (1996 and 1998). Seed removal rates and rates of discovery were greatest at the forest edge and decreased with distance into the old field. The number of seeds surviving to the end of the experiment also varied across the edge gradient, with highest survival at greater distances into the old field in low predation years. Seed removal rate covaried with spatial pattern of Peromyscus leucopus captures within the site. Seed removal and discovery was also higher under the exotic shrub Rosa multiflora, which may have provided cover for foraging seed predators. These indirect effects of edges on plant communities can potentially alter the rate and spatial pattern of tree invasion into disturbed lands and illustrate the importance of understanding plant-animal interactions in the context of habitat fragmentation.  相似文献

We combine information about the evolutionary history and distributional patterns of the genus Saintpaulia H. Wendl. (Gesneriaceae; ‘African violets’) to elucidate the factors and processes behind the accumulation of species in tropical montane areas of high biodiversity concentration. We find that high levels of biodiversity in the Eastern Arc Mountains are the result of pre-Quaternary speciation processes and environmental stability. Our results support the hypothesis that climatically stable mountaintops may have acted as climatic refugia for lowland lineages during the Pleistocene by preventing extinctions. In addition, we found evidence for the existence of lowland micro-refugia during the Pleistocene, which may explain the high species diversity of East African coastal forests. We discuss the conservation implications of the results in the context of future climate change.  相似文献

Facultative shifts in nesting habitat selection in response to perceived predation risk may allow animals to increase the survival probability of sessile offspring. Previous studies on this behavioral strategy have primarily focused on single attributes, such as the distance moved or changes in nesting substrate. However, nest site choice often encompasses multiple habitat elements at both the nest site and nest patch scales. We studied the within-season re-nesting strategy of a multi-brooded songbird, the Brewer’s sparrow (Spizella breweri), to determine whether pairs utilized a “win-stay, lose-switch” decision rule with respect to inter-nest distance, nest substrate and/or nest patch characteristics in response to previous nest fate. Pairs moved sequential nest sites slightly farther following nest predation versus success. When inter-nest distance was controlled, however, pairs changed nest patch attributes (shrub height, potential nest shrub density) associated with probability of nest predation to a greater extent following nest predation than success. The strategy appeared to be adaptive; daily nest survival probability for previously depredated pairs increased with greater Euclidian habitat distances between attempts, whereas previously successful pairs were more likely to fledge second attempts when nest sites were similar to those of previous attempts. Our results suggest that nesting birds can use prior information and within-season plasticity in response to nest predation to increase re-nesting success, which may be a critical behavioral strategy within complex nest predator environments. Re-nesting site selection strategies also appeared to integrate multiple habitat components and inter-nest distances. The consideration of such proximate, facultative responses to predation risk may clarify often unexplained variation in habitat preferences and requirements.  相似文献

Understanding how tropical tree phenology (i.e., the timing and amount of seed and leaf production) responds to climate is vital for predicting how climate change may alter ecological functioning of tropical forests. We examined the effects of temperature, rainfall, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) on seed phenology of four dominant species and community-level leaf phenology in a montane wet forest on the island of Hawaiʻi using monthly data collected over ~ 6 years. We expected that species phenologies would be better explained by variation in temperature and PAR than rainfall because rainfall at this site is not limiting. The best-fit model for all four species included temperature, rainfall, and PAR. For three species, including two foundational species of Hawaiian forests (Acacia koa and Metrosideros polymorpha), seed production declined with increasing maximum temperatures and increased with rainfall. Relationships with PAR were the most variable across all four species. Community-level leaf litterfall decreased with minimum temperatures, increased with rainfall, and showed a peak at PAR of ~ 400 μmol/m2s−1. There was considerable variation in monthly seed and leaf production not explained by climatic factors, and there was some evidence for a mediating effect of daylength. Thus, the impact of future climate change on this forest will depend on how climate change interacts with other factors such as daylength, biotic, and/or evolutionary constraints. Our results nonetheless provide insight into how climate change may affect different species in unique ways with potential consequences for shifts in species distributions and community composition.  相似文献

Background

Age-related changes of the immune system, termed immunosenescence, may underlie the increased risk of infections and morbidity in the elderly. Little is known about the effects of acute exercise on peripheral immune parameters in octogenarians. Therefore, we investigated acute exercise-induced changes in phenotype and function of the immune system in octogenarians participating in the 2013 edition of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches. Blood sampling was performed at baseline and immediately after 4 days of the walking exercise (30 km/day). A comprehensive set of adaptive and innate immune traits were enumerated and analyzed by flow-cytometry. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells, isolated before and after walking were stimulated with LPS and supernatants were analysed for IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α concentrations by ELISA. CMV serostatus was determined by ELISA.

Results

The walking exercise induced a clear leucocytosis with numerical increases of granulocytes, monocytes and lymphocytes. These exercise-induced changes were most profound in CMV seropositive subjects. Within lymphocytes, numerical increases of particularly CD4+ T cells were noted. Further T cell differentiation analysis revealed profound increases of naïve CD4+ T cells, including naïve Treg. Significant increases were also noted for CD4+ memory T cell subsets. In contrast, only slight increases in naïve and memory CD8+ T cell subsets were detected. Exercise did not affect markers of immune exhaustion in memory T cell subsets. NK cells demonstrated a numerical decline and a change in cellular composition with a selective decrease of the mature CD56dim NK cells. The latter was seen in CMV seronegative subjects only. Also, a higher IL-6 and IL-8 production capacity of LPS-stimulated PBMC was seen after walking.

Conclusion

In this exceptional cohort of octogenarian walkers, acute exercise induced changes in immune cell numbers and functions. A clear response of CD4+ T cells, rather than CD8+ T cells or NK cells was noted. Remarkably, the response to exercise within the CD4+ T cell compartment was dominated by naïve CD4+ subsets.

Clearing of caldén (Prosopis caldenia) forests for agriculture and cattle raising in east-central La Pampa Province, central Argentina, has created a highly fragmented landscape, a condition that has resulted in adverse effects on birds in other forests, mainly through increased predation rates near forest edges. We evaluated bird nest predation rates using artificial nests, assessing the effects of forest fragment size, distance to the edge and nest height. We measured survival rate of 570 artificial nests located in trees, in bushes and on the ground, at different distances from the edge, in six forest fragments ranging in size from 2.1 to 117.6 ha, during two consecutive breeding seasons. Nest predation rates were significantly related with the number of days of exposition of the nest, nest height and distance to the edge, whereas fragment size and year of the experiment were not associated with predation rates. Ground nests were less likely to be predated than those located in bushes and trees. Predation rates decreased with the distance to the edge, showing a pattern consistent with the existence of an edge effect.  相似文献

There has been a fair bit of understanding on the structure–function relationship of Aquaporins (AQPs) from plants and vertebrates obtained from available X-ray crystallography data. However, there is a lacuna in understanding the structure of AQPs from sanguinivorous insects like the mosquito where it plays a crucial role in survival. In this study, we have built homology models for the Aedes aegypti AQPs, identified key channel lining residues and compared the structure and sequence with orthodox AQPs. Although Ar/R filter residues of AaAQP1 were exactly similar to orthodox AQPs, AaAQP2 has a substitution at LE1position possibly making it less efficient in high capacity water transport. The huge difference in the selectivity filter region of AaAQP3 suggests a different transport property for this channel. The changes observed in the H5 position of the filter of AaAQP4 and AaAQP5 may explain the presence of a larger pore aperture to permit the passage of larger solute molecules. AaAQP6 possesses a completely hydrophobic filter like that in mammalian super aquaporins. The identified key residues are pivotal in understanding the mechanism of action and gating of these channels.  相似文献
