Plasma hormone levels during the estrous cycle of the cow, ewe,and sow have been measured, and the patterns of secretion ofestrogens, progesterone, and luteinizing hormone during thecycle have been related to ovarian changes and other informationconcerning the cycle for each species. Peripheral plasma progesteroneand LH levels are generally inversely related during the cyclein each species, and it seems clear that progesterone exertsa negative feedback on LH secretion in all three species, atleast insofar as the cyclic release of preovulatory amountsof LH is concerned. Peak plasma progesterone levels are highestin the sow, lowest in the ewe, and intermediate in the cow.Plasma LH levels at estrus are highest in the ewe, lowest inthe sow, and intermediate in the cow. Sharp peaks in plasmaLH occur at the onset of estrus in the cow, and a few hoursafter the onset of estrus in the ewe and sow; these peaks areof about 6–8 hr duration. LH exerts a luteotrophic actionon the corpora lutea of all three species, and verylow levelsof LH secretion appear capable of maintaining the corpus luteumin the ewe and cow. There is no good evidence that prolactinis luteotrophic in any of these species. Three peaks of plasmaestrogen levels are seen in the ewe and the cow and these appearrelated to periods of accelerated follicle growth. One peakoccurs early in the cycle and before plasma progesterone levelsrise appreciably and another occurs during the luteal phasejust prior to corpus luteum regression. The third peak occursafter plasma progesterone levels decline and is associated withgrowth of the ovulating follicle. The luteal phase estrogenpeak has not been found in the sow. The rapid rise in bloodestrogens after the corpus luteum regresses facilitates thepreovulatorysurge of LH in all three species. Cyclical regressionof the corpus luteum in all three speciesappears to be underlocal control of the adjacent horn of the uterus. Exogenousestrogens are luteolytic in the cow and ewe, but luteotrophicin the sow. The ovaries of all three species contain very poorlydeveloped interstitial tissue probably because of the neailycomplete dedifftrentiation of the thecal cells during atresia.Thus, these animals lack an important source ofsteroid hormonespresent in the lodents and certain other species.  相似文献

Five sows, five cows, five hens, six guinea pigs, six rabbits, and six rats were used in a study to determine if hepatic microsomal triglyceride transfer protein activity differed among species that varied in site of fatty acid synthesis and rate of hepatic triglyceride export. No differences in plasma nonesterified fatty acids were seen among species. Plasma concentrations of glucose were highest in the hen, intermediate in the rat, guinea pig, and rabbit and lowest in the sow and cow. Liver triglyceride was low in all species with the only significant difference being between the hen and the guinea pig (4.7 and 1.1%, DM basis, respectively). No microsomal triglyceride transfer protein activity was found in muscle. The cow, rat, and guinea pig had the lowest levels and the hen and rabbit the highest levels of duodenal microsomal triglyceride transfer protein activity. Hepatic microsomal triglyceride transfer protein activity was significantly higher in the sow than the other species. Hepatic microsomal triglyceride transfer protein activity was 1.51, 1.63, 2.36, 2.72, 2.95, and 6.70 nmole triolein transferred/h/mg microsomal protein for the guinea pig, rabbit, cow, rat, hen, and sow, respectively. Microsomal triglyceride transfer protein activity in duodenal tissue was 18.0, 18.6, 19.2, 33.4, 113, and 161% of hepatic microsomal triglyceride transfer protein activity for the sow, cow, rat, guinea pig, hen, and rabbit, respectively. Hepatic microsomal triglyceride transfer protein activity scaled to liver weight and metabolic body size was 2.69, 3.36, 4.58, 5.83, 7.49, and 22.3 nmole triolein transferred in the liver/min/kg body weight0.75 for the rabbit, guinea pig, rat, hen, cow, and sow, respectively. There was little relationship between previously published rates for triglyceride export and hepatic microsomal triglyceride transfer protein activity measured in this experiment.  相似文献

Colostral trypsin-inhibitor capacity was monitored during the first two weeks from parturition. The colostrum of the mare, sow, cow and ewe showed high antitrypsin activity at parturition, decreasing to about one hundredth during the first week. Canine milk remained on a relatively high antitrypsin level, and human milk was poor in antitrypsin from childbirth. The antitrypsin content seems to parallel the known changes in the colostral immunoglobulin levels of different species. The role of antitrypsin in protection of immunoglobulins from proteolytic damage during passive transfer of immunity to the newborn is obvious.  相似文献

Neurons displaying somatostatin or vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) immunoreactivity were detected among the amacrine cells in the retina of baboon, cynomolgus monkey, squirrel monkey, cow, pig, cat, rabbit, guinea-pig, rat, mouse, frog and goldfish. Generally, immunoreactive cell bodies were located in the inner nuclear layer with processes ramifying in three more or less well-defined sublayers in the inner plexiform layer. The density of the sublayers and their location varied with the peptide and species investigated. In most cases there was a sublayer in the outermost part (Ramon y Cajal's sublamina 1) of the inner plexiform layer and this sublayer was usually the best developed. In some species a few somatostatin fibres were also detected in the outer plexiform layer, suggesting that some interplexiform cells contain somatostatin. In the baboon VIP was found exclusively in interstitial amacrine cells which have their cell bodies and processes entirely within the inner plexiform layer.  相似文献

The concentrations of isoprene, the main hydrocarbon of human breath, were measured in the blood of humans and of different animal species (rat, rabbit, dog, ewe, cow). In human blood, the concentrations of isoprene were between 15 and 70 nmol/liter (mean value of 37 +/- 25 (SD) nmol/liter). In the blood of the different animal species tested, traces of isoprene were unambiguously detected by mass spectrometry, but the levels were always lower than 1 nmol/liter.  相似文献

(1) The validity of using the arterio-venous concentration difference of methionine to calculate mammary blood flow in the ewe, on the basis of the Fick principle, is discussed. (2) Calculation of mammary blood flow in the lactating Merino ewe indicated that blood flow per unit weight of tissue and the ratio of blood flow : milk yield were approximately twice that found in the lactating cow and goat. (3) Calculated mammary blood flow in Merino ewes was used in conjunction with glucose arterio-venous difference to determine mammary glucose uptake. Glucose uptake per unit weight of tissue in the ewe was almost double that found in the cow and goat. The ratio of mammary glucose uptake to lactose output was also higher in the ewe than that found in the cow and goat. The utilization of glucose by the mammary gland of the ewe is discussed in relation to the possible greater requirement for NADPH and glycerol for milk fat synthesis in this species.  相似文献

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) is responsible for the biological production of nitric oxide (NO) in several organs, including those of the reproductive tract. We investigated potential changes in NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) activity (marker for NOS activity) and the presence and distribution of NOS in the porcine oviduct. Tissues were obtained from gilts (n=16) on different days of the estrous cycle. One fallopian tube was used for histo- and immunohistochemistry and the other for Western blotting analysis. NADPH-d activity was much higher in the epithelium of the mucosa than in the myosalpinx. The highest activity of NADPH-d was always found in the epithelium of the isthmus. The intensity of the reaction (arbitrary units +/- SEM) in isthmus epithelium increased from the postovulatory period until early proestrus (96.2 +/- 11.2) and then gradually decreased. The lowest intensity of NADPH-d reaction in the epithelium of the isthmus was seen at estrus (58.4 +/- 7.7). The most intense NADPH-d activity in myosalpinx of all parts of the oviduct was observed at the postovulatory stage of the estrous cycle (isthmus 38.3 +/- 2.5; ampulla 35.6 +/- 4.2; infundibulum 24.7 +/- 0.8) and then decreased during the remaining stages of the estrous cycle (p< 0.001). The presence of endothelial NOS (eNOS) was detected in epithelial cells of mucosa and in endothelium of vascular tissues and myosalpinx during all studied days of the estrous cycle. The positive reaction for inducible NOS (iNOS) was restricted only to the endothelium of lymph vessels and some blood vessels. Because our Western blotting analysis revealed that porcine oviduct contains eNOS but not iNOS, we suggest that eNOS is the main isoform of NOS expressed in the porcine oviduct. We concluded that the different activity of NADPH-d in the various regions of the oviduct, accompanied by changes in its activity during the course of the estrous cycle, could indicate an important role of NO in regulation of tubal function.  相似文献

Summary The three-dimensional architecture of the human isthmic myosalpinx is directly visualized by means of scanning electron microscopy after removal of interstitial connective tissue through NaOH maceration and ultrasound microdissection. These investigations show that the myosalpinx is composed of irregularly running bundles of smooth muscle cells, changing their orientation within the myosalpinx and displaying longitudinal, oblique and circular directions. The muscular bundles anastomose and intermingle with other bundles running at different levels in the oviduct wall, and actually give rise to a wide and complex muscular network in which no distinct layers are readily discernible. These morphological data are consistent with the physiological findings that the transport of gametes and embryo in very early stages in the isthmic portion of the oviduct tube is the result of a discontinuous pattern of forward and backward movements.  相似文献

Three pyroglutamylpeptide amides, pGlu-Glu-Pro amide, pGlu-Phe-Pro amide and pGlu-Gln-Pro amide, with similar structures to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), have been identified previously in the male reproductive system. We report here that rat and human mammary gland contain neutral TRH-immunoreactive peptides which are not retained on cation or anion exchange chromatography and that similar peptides occur in the milk of rat, cow, ewe and sow. The TRH-like peptides in lyophilized milk from the cow were purified by gel exclusion chromatography, mini-column cation exchange chromatography and reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the chromatographed peptides were located by TRH radioimmunoassay (RIA). In each chromatographic system the major TRH-immunoreactive peptide from cow milk exhibited identical behavior to pGlu-Phe-Pro amide; in addition there were two minor TRH-immunoreactive components. The possible physiological role of the TRH-like peptides in the mammary gland is discussed. In a series of patients with breast carcinoma, mammary tumor tissue was shown to contain approximately four times more TRH-like peptide than normal mammary tissue from the same patient, raising the possibility that the TRH-like peptides may be implicated in tumor development.  相似文献

To examine more closely the anti-oestrogenic action of progesterone (P), its effect on various parameters in the 17 beta-oestradiol (E2)-primed uterus of the mouse, guinea pig, rabbit and ewe was studied. Changes in uterine wet weight, rate of in vitro protein synthesis, protein : DNA and RNA : DNA ratios, peroxidase activity and the level of cytosol receptors for E2 and P were measured. Considerable between-species differences in the effect of P on these parameters were observed. The anti-uterotrophic action was greater in the mouse than in the guinea pig and was not seen in the rabbit or ewe. P inhibited protein synthesis in the mouse, was without significant effect in the guinea pig and was mildly stimulatory in the rabbit and ewe. Inhibitory effects on protein : DNA and RNA : DNA ratios were substantial in the mouse, minor in the guinea pig and absent in the rabbit and ewe. Peroxidase activity was decrease in the mouse and guinea pig, essentially lacking in the rabbit and not detectable in the ewe. In all species the level of both oestrogen and progesterone cytosol receptors was decreased, although the effect on the E2 receptor was less marked in the ewe. The results indicate that in the species studied an effect of P on the replenishment of the E2 receptor is not necessarily associated with other anti-oestrogenic actions of P and argue against the concept that initial anti-oestrogenic actions of P are mediated via a specific effect on such replenishment.  相似文献

1. Accumulation of uric acid and PAH was measured in renal cortical slices of various mammalian species. 2. The slice to medium ratio of uric acid was above unity in the rabbit, guinea pig, pig and cow, suggesting an active accumulation of uric acid, while it was near or below unity in the rat and mongrel dog. 3. Uric acid uptake in the rabbit, guinea pig and cow was significantly inhibited by PAH. 4. Uric acid was a potent inhibitor of PAH uptake in the rabbit, guinea pig, dog and pig, but much less potent in the rat and cow. 5. Kinetic analysis showed that uric acid inhibited PAH uptake in a competitive manner in all species studied except for the cow showing a noncompetitive type. 6. These results indicate that uric acid and PAH share a common transport mechanism at the basolateral membrane of the rabbit, guinea pig and pig.  相似文献

Glycopeptides in the stomachs of eleven mammalian species, including human, rabbit, horse, cow, pig, goat, sheep, dog, cat, guinea pig and rat were assayed by determining the carbohydrate content of materials which remained after proteolysis. 2. The glycopeptide content was higher in the mucosa than in the muscular layer including serosa, especially in the porcine stomach and the fourth stomachs of the ruminants than in the stomachs of any other animals. 3. The glycopeptide, which was stained with both alcian blue and PAS, was absent or sparingly present in the mucosae of the human, rabbit, horse stomachs and in the mucosae of the first to third stomachs of the cow, goat and sheep, whereas in the mucosae of the pig, dog, cat, guinea pig and rat stomachs and in the mucosae of the fourth stomachs of the cow, goat and sheep, it was found in noticeable extents.  相似文献

This model of growth offers a quantitative definition for altricial and precocial newborns, makes muscular strength a benchmark for locomotor independence, and discriminates related genera as well as genera across major taxonomic divides. The model contrasts four theoretical conditions of the neonate (I, small brain, weak musculature; II, small brain, strong musculature; III, large brain, weak musculature; IV, large brain, strong musculature) with species from three orders of placental mammal. Each species exhibits a distinct mother-infant strategy from the altricial red panda cub (condition I) and the golden lion tamarin (condition III) to the precocial wildebeest calf (condition IV). The model proposes that early growth rates of brain and muscle correlate with nutrition, maternal effort during gestation and lactation, and parental care, whereas postnatal muscular growth correlates directly with adult body size and locomotor repertoire. An example of condition II (small brain, strong musculature) has not been found. This suggests that muscle does not grow in advance of the brain and that the brain acts as a pacemaker of growth. In order to increase our understanding of exotic species, noninvasive measures (body weight and length) and observations (opening of the eyes and ears, hair density, weaning, and the abilities to ther-moregulate and to move) should be supplemented with analysis of the differential tissue and organ growth. In both theoretical and practical ways analysis of deceased individuals contributes to the understanding of all species.  相似文献

Light microscopy immunohistochemistry was used to localize neurophysin in the corpus luteum of the mid-luteal phase of the estrous cycle of the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). Corpora lutea weighing 0.39-0.65 g from a recent ovulation showed no staining. Corpora lutea identified with the late luteal phase showed only weak evidence of staining. The neurophysin staining was confined to a specific region of large oval-shaped cells (20-30 microns diameter), which had a very eosinophilic cytoplasm. The intense localization of staining to a distinct area of the cytoplasm was previously only observed in the corpus luteum of the cow. Corpora lutea obtained from all quadrants of pregnancy did not stain. Controls in which the neurophysin antiserum was substituted with serum from an unimmunized rabbit (normal rabbit serum) or neurophysin antiserum preabsorbed with bovine oxytocin-associated neurophysin I also did not stain. These data indicate the neurophysin is present in the mature corpus luteum of the nonpregnant water buffalo as it is in other nonpregnant ruminants, the ewe and cow.  相似文献

A new proteocephalidean cestode is described from 2 catfishes, Clarias gariepinus (type host) and C. cf. anguillaris (Siluriformes: Clariidae), from Ethiopia (type locality), Sudan, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, and a new genus, Barsonella, is proposed to accommodate it. The genus belongs to the Proteocephalinae because its genital organs (testes, ovary, vitellarium, and uterus) are situated in the medulla. Barsonella lafoni, the type and only species of the new genus, is characterized mainly by the possession of an additional opening of each sucker; circular musculature on the anterior margin of suckers, serving as a sphincter; a small thin-walled glandular apical organ; absence of well-developed osmoregulatory canals in mature, pregravid, and gravid proglottids; and a large strobila, up to 173 mm long and 3.2 mm wide. Species of Marsypocephalus Wedl, 1861 (Marsypocephalinae), other large-sized proteocephalidean tapeworms occurring sympatrically in African catfishes (Clarias and Heterobranchus) and also possessing a sphincter-like, circular musculature on the anterior part of suckers, differ from B. lafoni in the absence of an additional sucker opening and glandular apical organ, the cortical position of the testes, well-developed osmoregulatory canals throughout the strobila, and a large cirrus sac. Proteocephalus glanduligerus (Janicki, 1928), another cestode parasitic in Clarias spp. in Africa, is much smaller than B. lafoni (maximum length 15 mm), has suckers without additional opening and circular musculature on the suckers, a large-sized glandular organ, much larger than suckers, and well-developed osmoregulatory canals. Comparison of partial sequences of the 28S rRNA gene for 7 samples of B. lafoni from 2 different hosts and 4 localities in Ethiopia, Sudan, and Tanzania has shown a very low genetic variability. In a limited phylogenetic analysis, B. lafoni formed a clade with Corallobothrium solidum Fritsch, 1886 (Proteocephalidae: Corallobothriinae), an African electric catfish parasite. This clade was the sister group of almost all Neotropical taxa from pimelodid and other catfishes.  相似文献

Mixed species stocking is commonly a more ecologically sound and efficient use of forage resources than single species stocking, especially in pastures having complex assemblages of forage species. However, in many environments livestock predation on especially smaller ruminants adds an extra challenge to mixed species stocking. When mixed sheep and cattle remain consistently as a cohesive group (flerd), predation risks are lessened, while fencing and herding costs are reduced. To establish a cohesive group (bond), a 30-day bonding period in which young sheep and cattle pairs are penned together is currently recommended. The purpose of this research was to test if a bond could be produced in <30 days (14 days) using pen confinement; thus reducing feed, labor, and overhead costs. Additionally, we tested whether cow age affects cohesiveness of bonded pairs immediately following 14 days of pen confinement. Sixteen mature cows (7–8 years of age) and sixteen 9-month-old heifers were randomly paired with one of 32 yearling ewe lambs. Eight cow/ewe (PC) and eight heifer/ewe (PH) pairs were maintained individually in 2 m×6 m pens for 14 days. The other eight-cow/ewe (NC) and heifer/ewe (NH) pairs were separated by species with each species maintained on separate pastures for the 14-day period. After 14 days, pairs were released in observation paddocks and separation distance between treatment pairs was measured during a 30-min open field test. Other behaviors were also noted and recorded during the field test. Separation distance did not differ (P=0.973) between the PC and PH treatments; however, separation distance for NC versus NH (P<0.004), NC versus PC (P<0.001), and NH versus PH (P<0.002) all differed. Mean separation distance (meters) and standard errors were 40±3.9, 3±0.3, 76±5.3, and 4±1.4 for NH, PH, NC, and PC treatments, respectively. Overall, the animals that were penned spent more time grazing and less time walking than animals not previously penned for 14 days. Penned animals also vocalized less than non-penned animals during the open field test. The bond sheep formed to the bovines was not affected by cow age. These data suggest that inter-specific bond formation using pen confinement can be accomplished within 14 days, representing a 53% savings in time and associated costs when compared to pen confinement lasting 30 days.  相似文献

The localisation of tyrosine-hydroxylase immunoreactive neurones in retinas of a variety of animals were examined. Immunoreactivity was associated with specific populations of amacrine neurones in all species examined, viz; rabbit, guinea pig, monkey, cow, frog, pigeon and goldfish. Only in the goldfish was immunoreactivity also associated with processes situated in the outer plexiform layer showing that in this species catecholamine interplexiform cells exist. The development of tyrosine-hydroxylase immunoreactive neurones in the rabbit retina was also analysed. The first immunoreactive positive cells were observed by the third postnatal day. The immunoreactive positive neurones at this stage are weak and lack processes. The intensity of the immunoreactivity increases with development, but processes are lacking, until the 10th postnatal day. The immunoreactive neurones only appear fully developed by the 22nd to 28th postnatal day. Autoradiographical analysis of 3H-dopamine uptake strongly suggests that neurones containing tyrosine-hydroxylase immunoreactivity in the different retinas have the capacity to take up exogenous dopamine. It is therefore concluded that localisation of either 3H-dopamine uptake or tyrosine-hydroxylase provides a means of locating catecholamine neurones.  相似文献

Adenylate cyclase activity and the effects of EGTA, 5'-guanylylimidodiphosphate (GPP(NH)P), and dopamine were measured in microdissected layers of rod-dominant (rabbit) and cone-dominant (ground squirrel) retinas, The distribution of basal enzyme activity was similar in both species, with the highest levels found in the inner plexiform and photoreceptor cell inner segment layers, EGTA inhibited adenylate cyclase in the inner retina of both species and stimulated activity in rabbit outer and inner segment layers, but had no effect in these layers from ground squirrel. Enzyme activity was stimulated in all regions by GPP(NH)P, except in the outer segments of the photoreceptors. Dopamine stimulated the enzyme in the outer and inner plexiform and inner nuclear layers in rabbit, but only in the inner plexiform layer in ground squirrel. These data demonstrate that the enzymatic characteristics of adenylate cyclase vary extensively from region to region in vertebrate retina and suggest that cyclic AMP may have multiple roles in this tissue. A model for the distribution of the different forms of adenylate cyclase in retina is proposed.  相似文献

Species of the freshwater gastrotrich taxon Dasydytidae show a set of conspicuous structural and behavioural adaptations to a semi-planktonic life. Conspicuously, most dasydytids have several groups of strong, moveable spines that can actively be abducted to perform saltatory movements, change the overall direction of locomotion, or enable the animals to rest in a defensive position. So far, there are only vague ideas of how these spine movements are achieved in dasydytid species. In order to gain insight into the possible morpho-functional coupling of body musculature and motile spines, we have carried out a study targeting the muscular system in two species of Dasydytidae by means of phalloidin staining and confocal laser scanning microscopy.

For spine movements in both species studied, Stylochaeta scirtetica and Dasydytes (Setodytes) tongiorgii, we have identified an antagonistic system of segmented longitudinal and oblique somatic muscle pairs. In both species, contraction of the musculi obliqua abduct the paired groups of ventro-lateral spines; contraction of the segments of musculi laterales causes their adduction.

A comparison of the muscular system of the studied species to that of other gastrotrichs reveals several homologous muscle pairs, visceral as well as somatic, that might be features of the stem species of a clade comprising all Paucitubulatina exclusive of Xenotrichulidae. The pairs of oblique somatic muscles are most probably an autapomorphy of Dasydytidae.  相似文献
