We studied and modeled damage caused by Helicoverpa armigera larvae on cotton with the aim of developing a coupled crop pest model. Two damage components were studied: the voracity (quantity of fresh matter and number of organs consumed) and feeding preferences (type of organ infested). The laboratory no-choice study of voracity on excised squares and bolls revealed that an H. armigera larva consumes 2,856 mg of fresh matter throughout its larval life, with the sixth instar consuming 86% of this quantity. This consumption rate corresponded to 23.6 squares, or 7.8 bolls. We developed equations to predict the quantity of fresh matter uptake from an individual plant organ, according to the organ mass and the larval instar. The field study of feeding preference confirmed previous findings that larvae prefer squares to bolls, with this preference decreasing as the larval age increases. However, no significant relationship was noted between the age of larvae and the size of infested organs within each organ class (square or boll). We developed a logistic model to predict the probability of a larva infesting a boll rather than a square. According to this model, the relative organ availability in the field and the larval instar were found to be significant factors.  相似文献

In small rodent populations with wide-amplitude fluctuations and low-density bottlenecks, the individuals that survive through the bottlenecks may gain major fitness advantages as they will be the founders of the following population expansion. Most hypotheses assume that there exists a physical or behavioural refuge from increased predation risk, and that the survivors are most likely individuals adapted to use such refuges. A recent hypothesis suggests that survival probability is habitat-dependent so that some otherwise sub-optimal habitats provide a spatial refuge from predation risk by the main predator(s). We used spatially replicated long-term (1981–2004) trapping and tracking data of voles (field vole Microtus agrestis and sibling vole M. rossiaemeridionalis) and their main predators (weasel Mustela nivalis and stoat M. erminea) to test predictions based on this hypothesis. We did not find support for the hypothesis. We did not find marked phase-dependent differences in the habitat-level distribution of Microtus voles. Habitat types with low Microtus vole abundance had, on average, comparable predator activity than the main Microtus vole habitats, indicating that there were no habitat-level refuges from predators. There appeared to be no permanent site-level refuges: the spatial distribution of voles varied from one bottleneck to another. This suggests that survival through bottlenecks is at least partly determined by chance events. We propose that in this kind of systems, where relatively short-lived prey are hunted by nomadic or widely ranging predators, short-term anti-predator responses may increase survival prospects as efficiently as more costly anti-predator adaptations, and there is no apparent need to maintain special adaptations to bottleneck situations that occur at infrequent intervals.Co-ordinating editor: J. Argyrodes antipodianus is a small kleptobiotic spider that steals prey from webs of the large orb-weaving spider Nephila plumipes, and sometimes removes the web itself. We used experiments in a greenhouse to test how the presence of the kleptobiont, differences in food availability, and web damage affected fitness of the web owner. After 49 days, N. plumipes with four A. antipodianus on their webs gained 55% less weight and relocated their webs 4.5 times as often as spiders with no kleptobionts. Increased web relocation and decreased weight gain may have resulted from reduced prey levels or from web damage by A. antipodianus. A second experiment demonstrated that hosts gained weight at the feeding rate used in the first experiment, but not at lower rates. Web relocation rate also varied with feeding rate, but in a non-linear manner. Web loss was evaluated in a separate experiment, by manually removing one-quarter of the web every 5 days for 30 days; however, neither weight gain nor rate of web relocation were affected. We conclude that A. antipodianus is a true kleptoparasite that can reduce the growth rate of its host N. plumipes, but that neither food theft nor web damage alone explain increased web relocation rates. In 1929, V. F. Brotherus published eight species and one form of Chinese Brachytheciaceae based on Handel-Mazzetti's collections from Hunan, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces of China during 1914~1918. The holotypes of all the taxa mentioned above were studied by the present authors. Three names are newly reduced to synonyms: Brachythecium subcurvatulum≡ Brachythecium velutinum ; Rhynchostegium gracilescens≡ Eu-rhynchium savatieri and Rhynchostegium obsoletinerve≡Herzogiella turfacea.  相似文献

Previously in this journal, Altaba (2015) presented an original hypothesis on the dispersal of small wetland snails in Central Europe after the Last Glacial Maximum, based on the discovery of rare species of the genus Vallonia at the foot of the Devín Hill (Slovakia). On the basis of the evidence available to us, it is our opinion that the existence of Vallonia declivis, Vallonia suevica, Vallonia enniensis, and Vallonia tenuilabris at Devín Gate has not been established, and that the hypothesis advanced in Altaba (2015) is therefore unsubstantiated by hard evidence.  相似文献

The extinction of species is a major threat to the biodiversity. The species exhibiting a strong Allee effect are vulnerable to extinction due to predation. The refuge used by species having a strong Allee effect may affect their predation and hence extinction risk. A mathematical study of such behavioral phenomenon may aid in management of many endangered species. However, a little attention has been paid in this direction. In this paper, we have studied the impact of a constant prey refuge on the dynamics of a ratio-dependent predator–prey system with strong Allee effect in prey growth. The stability analysis of the model has been carried out, and a comprehensive bifurcation analysis is presented. It is found that if prey refuge is less than the Allee threshold, the incorporation of prey refuge increases the threshold values of the predation rate and conversion efficiency at which unconditional extinction occurs. Moreover, if the prey refuge is greater than the Allee threshold, situation of unconditional extinction may not occur. It is found that at a critical value of prey refuge, which is greater than the Allee threshold but less than the carrying capacity of prey population, system undergoes cusp bifurcation and the rich spectrum of dynamics exhibited by the system disappears if the prey refuge is increased further.  相似文献

In an aviary experiment, we studied whether body size or habitatfamiliarity of field voles (Microtus agrestis) affected predationrisk by Tengmalm's owls (Aegolius funereus). In the field, wecompared the body size of field voles snap-trapped in good (covered)and poor (open) habitats in 1992 and 1994 to determine whetherthere were habitat-related differences in the body size of voles.In the aviary, large individuals occupied the good habitat significantlymore than small individuals both in the control (owl not present)and experimental treatments (owl present). Furthermore, habitat-familiarvoles inhabited the good habitat more than habitat-unfamiliarvoles did when an owl was present Our field data were consistentwith our aviary data: larger field voles were more frequentlyfound in good habitats than in poor habitats. In the aviary,Tengmalm's owl predation risk was higher for small and habitat-unfamiliarvoles. This suggests that large field voles may have priorityto sheltered habitats. Furthermore, habitat familiarity mayplay a central role in avoiding risky habitats.  相似文献

The life history of Spodoptera exigua was studied under laboratory conditions at temperature of 25°C ± 1°C, relative humidity (RH) of 60% ± 5% and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (Light:Dark) on nine soybean (Glycine max L.) cultivars: 032, 033, Hill, M4, M7, M9, M11, TMS and Zan. Larval and pupal development times were longest on M7 cultivar (14.09 ± 0.078 and 7.78 ± 0.090 days) and shortest on 033 cultivar (11.98 ± 0.054 and 7.033 ± 0.090 days). The longest and shortest female and male longevities were observed on Hill and Zan cultivars, respectively. The results showed that the whole life span varied from 32.80 ± 0.89 to 37 ± 0.98 days for females and from 33.3 ± 0.66 to 38.74 ± 0.95 days for males. The highest daily fecundity was obtained on M9 (102. 38 eggs), and the lowest on Hill (75.87 eggs). Mean total fecundity per female during adult life was highest on 033 (1156.20 eggs) and lowest on M7 cultivars (841.68 eggs). Clustering analysis of the biological parameters of S. exigua confirmed that 033 and Hill cultivars were the susceptible and the resistant cultivars, respectively.  相似文献

The effects of fenvalerate exposure on the net-spinning behaviour of Hydropsyche siltalai were examined in a laboratory study. The larvae were exposed to nominal pulse-doses of 0.25 and 0.5 μg fenvalerate l-1. Nets were collected and examined for anomalies after four days of exposure to fenvalerate. Additional nets were collected after another four day of exposure. The fenvalerate dissipated rapidly from the water column, and since only two doses of fenvalerate were given, the larvae were exposed to two pulse-doses of fenvalerate rather than to a constant concentration. In the 0.5 μg l-1-treatment the net-spinning behaviour was significantly affected, expressed as an increased mesh-opening and a decreased symmetry of the nets. No significant effects of fenvalerate exposure on the net-spinning behaviour were detected in the 0.25 μg l-1-treatment. Thus, with the conditions given in this experiment, exposure to fenvalerate starts to affect the net-spinning behaviour of Hydropsyche siltalai at a concentration between 0.25 and 0.5 μg l-1. The use of net-anomalies and Hydropsyche as bioindicators for monitoring pollutants in stream ecosystems are discussed. The cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera is a serious pest of many economically important crops. Since this pest has become resistant to the conventional synthetic insecticides, newer compounds and formulations are being developed against this insect pest. Many natural compounds isolated from the plants were tested against this pest. Among them Hyptis suaveolens and Melochia corchorifolia showed insecticidal properties against H. arnigera. Based on bioefficacy studies, caryophyllene and β-sitosterol were isolated from H. suaveolens and M. corchorifolia respectively. The isolated natural compounds were further developed as formulations in various combinations with neem (Azadirachta indica) and karanj (Pongamia pinnata) oils. The present study indicated that the formulations influenced the karyomorphology of H. armigera.  相似文献

Myrmecia dispar (Clark) is found in the drier inland areas of New South Wales and southern Queensland in Australia. Its nests, which are situated adjacent to trees, have a distinctive structure of simple architecture. The composition of the colonies varies seasonally with little or no brood production during the colder months. Colony founding probably takes place in March, April, and/or May. Several myrmecophiles are found in nests ofM. dispar, and some of these are present in relatively large numbers.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of Atlantic Rain Forest remnants on the natural biological control of Euselasia apisaon (Dahman) by the parasitoid Trichogramma maxacalii (Voegelé e Pointel) in Eucalyptus plantations. The number of E. apisaon eggs/leaf was higher in the center than in the edge of the plantations (23.5 +/- 7.61 vs. 14.8 +/- 3.14), but parasitism showed the reversed pattern (72.4% in the center and 80.5% in the edge). The results indicated that natural regulation exerted by T. maxacalii on populations of E. apisaon may be enhanced by the preservation of fragments of native vegetation surrounding Eucalyptus plantations.  相似文献

Human presence in natural environments is often a source of stress that is perceived by large ungulates as an increased risk of predation. Alternatively, disturbance induced by hikers creates a relatively predator‐free space that may serve as a refuge. We measured the behavioral responses of female caribou to disturbance associated with the presence of hikers during summer in the Gaspésie National Park. We used those data to determine whether caribou responded negatively to human activity (i.e., the predation risk hypothesis) or whether human activity resulted in a decrease in the magnitude of perceived risk (i.e., the refuge hypothesis). Female caribou with a calf spent nearly half of their time feeding, regardless of the presence of a trail or the number of hikers. They also decreased their vigilance near trails when the number of hikers increased. Conversely, lone females fed less frequently and almost doubled the time invested in vigilance under the same circumstances. However, both groups of females moved away from trails during the day, especially in the presence of hikers. We demonstrated that risk avoidance was specific to the maternal state of the individual. Lactating females accommodated the presence of hikers to increase time spent foraging and nutritional intake, providing support for the refuge hypothesis. Alternatively, lone females with lower energetic requirements and no maternal investment in a vulnerable calf appeared less tolerant to risk, consistent with the predation risk hypothesis. Synthesis and applications: Hikers influenced the vigilance–feeding trade‐off in caribou, underlining the importance of appropriate management of linear structures and human activities, especially across the critical habitat of endangered species. Even if some individuals seemed to benefit from human presence, this behavioral adaptation was not sufficient to reduce annual calf mortality associated with predation.  相似文献
