Ayurveda, the native healthcare system of India, is a rich resource of well-documented ancient medical knowledge. Although the roots of this knowledge date back to the Vedic and post-Vedic eras, it is generally believed that a dedicated branch for healthcare was gradually established approximately between 400 BCE and 200 CE. Probably because the language of documentation of these early textbooks is in Sanskrit, a language that is not in day-to-day use among the general population even in India, many significant contributions of Ayurveda have remained unrecognized in the literature related to the history of medicine. In this communication, the discovery of blood circulation has been taken up as a case, and a few important references from the representative Ayurveda compendia that hint at a preliminary understanding of the cardiovascular system as a "closed circuit" and the heart acting as a pump have been reviewed. The central argument of this review is that these contributions from Ayurveda too must be recorded and credited when reviewing the milestones in the history of medicine, as Ayurveda can still possibly guide various streams of the current sciences, if revisited with this spirit.  相似文献

Beginning in 1910, A. V. Hill performed careful experiments on the time course of heat production in isolated frog muscle. His research paralleled that of the German biochemist Otto Meyerhof, who measured the changes in muscle glycogen and lactate during contractions and recovery. For their work in discovering the distinction between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, Hill and Meyerhof were jointly awarded the 1922 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Because of Hill's interest in athletics, he sought to apply the concepts discovered in isolated frog muscle to the exercising human. Hill and his colleagues made measurements of O(2) consumption on themselves and other subjects running around an 85-m grass track. In the process of this work, they defined the terms "maximum O(2) intake," "O(2) requirement," and "steady state of exercise." Other contributions of Hill include his discoveries of heat production in nerve, the series elastic component, and the force-velocity equation in muscle. Around the time of World War II, Hill was a leading figure in the Academic Assistance Council, which helped Jewish scientists fleeing Nazi Germany to relocate in the West. He served as a member of the British Parliament from 1940 to 1945 and as a scientific advisor to India. Hill's vision and enthusiasm attracted many scientists to the field of exercise physiology, and he pointed the way toward many of the physiological adaptations that occur with physical training.  相似文献

For at least 150 years, biological scientists have congregated at marine laboratories, located at the edge of the sea, to explore aquatic life. The purpose of this minireview is to offer a brief perspective on the relevance of this activity to our knowledge of human physiology and disease, drawing heavily on the experience of the authors and without attempting to offer a comprehensive history of the many contributions of marine models to biomedical research.  相似文献

Seed physiology, especially seed germination, has intrigued the human mind since antiquity, partly out of curiosity, partly because of practical reasons. Theophrastus could be called the father of seed physiology since he already described many of the facts and problems which up to this day are being investigated by seed physiologists. Most of the other ancient authors writing about natural history or agriculture (Columella, Varro, Pliny the elder, Virgil) added little to Theophrastus’ all encompassing knowledge of seed physiology. The 1700 years from the first century A.D. to the end of the 18th century were a “black out” (Johansen, 1951) of seed physiology. At the beginning of the 19th century people like Schleiden, Amici, Brown and Hofmeister first understood structure and function of ovule, embryo sac and pollen tube whereas fertilization and double fertilization were only detected at the end of the 19th century by Strasburger, Nawaschin and Guignard. The physiology and biochemistry of seed maturation were first investigated by Sachs and Pfeffer, two great masters of modern plant physiology. In modern times our detailed knowledge of the effect of external factors on seed germination is due to the many authors working at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. Our knowledge of the impact of temperature on germination derives mainly from the investigations of Sachs, De Vries and Haberlandt, and of light from those of Caspary, Cieslar, Heinricher and Kinzel. The action spectrum of light was first investigated by Cieslar, and Flint and McAllister whereas the most important discovery of the effect of light on germination (and on many other physiological phenomena), the R-FR photoreversible system, was made by Borthwick et al. leading later to the discovery of the phytochrome. The first germination inhibiting and stimulating substances were found by Siegmund and Lehman. The long history of seed physiology should make today’s seed physiologists conscious of the fact that they stand on the “shoulders of giants.”  相似文献

A current trend in physiology education involves the use of clinical vignettes to demonstrate the importance of knowing normal physiology to appreciate pathophysiology. Although laudable, in effect, such tactics promote the so-called "disease" model of medicine while at the same time suggesting that the only utility for the knowledge of physiology is to understand pathophysiology. This would seem to be at odds with health professions and institutions, who maintain their goal is to promote health. Yet, a search for the locus of "health" education in typical curricula is not easily found. Given the developing interest in biological systems as well as aging, it is suggested that these topics may provide a basis for locating physiology as the locus for understanding "health."  相似文献

OBJECTIVES--To examine the potential of lifelong patterns of increased physical activity to prevent stroke. DESIGN--Case-control study. SETTING--11 general practices in west Birmingham. SUBJECTS--125 men and women who had just had their first stroke and were aged 35-74 and 198 controls frequency matched for age and sex recruited over 24 months during 1988-90. Exclusion criteria were a previous history of stroke, mitral valvular heart disease combined with atrial fibrillation, primary or metastatic cerebral neoplasm, or coagulation disorder or myeloproliferative disease. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Odds ratios for stroke related to lifetime history of exercise after 15 years of age. RESULTS--A history of vigorous exercise during the ages 15-25 appeared to protect from stroke: odds ratio adjusted for age and sex 0.33 (95% confidence interval 0.2 to 0.6). This effect was independent of other potential risk factors. Increasing years of participation in vigorous exercise between the ages of 15 and 55 produced an increasing protection from stroke (p < 0.001). In the 65 cases and 169 controls who were free of cardiac ischaemia, peripheral vascular disease, and poor health recent vigorous exercise and walking were protective against stroke: odds ratios of 0.41 (0.2 to 1.0) for recent vigorous exercise and 0.30 (0.1 to 0.7) for recent walking. CONCLUSIONS--Appreciable protection from stroke in later life is conferred by vigorous exercise in early adulthood. This increased level of physical activity should, if possible, be continued lifelong.  相似文献

Background

Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus (AHFV) and Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV) cause significant human disease and mortality in Saudi Arabia and India, respectively. Despite their distinct geographic ranges, AHFV and KFDV share a remarkably high sequence identity. Given its emergence decades after KFDV, AHFV has since been considered a variant of KFDV and thought to have arisen from an introduction of KFDV to Saudi Arabia from India. To gain a better understanding of the evolutionary history of AHFV and KFDV, we analyzed the full length genomes of 16 AHFV and 3 KFDV isolates.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Viral genomes were sequenced and compared to two AHFV sequences available in GenBank. Sequence analyses revealed higher genetic diversity within AHFVs isolated from ticks than human AHFV isolates. A Bayesian coalescent phylogenetic analysis demonstrated an ancient divergence of AHFV and KFDV of approximately 700 years ago.

Conclusions/Significance

The high sequence diversity within tick populations and the presence of competent tick vectors in the surrounding regions, coupled with the recent identification of AHFV in Egypt, indicate possible viral range expansion or a larger geographic range than previously thought. The divergence of AHFV from KFDV nearly 700 years ago suggests other AHFV/KFDV-like viruses might exist in the regions between Saudi Arabia and India. Given the human morbidity and mortality associated with these viruses, these results emphasize the importance of more focused study of these significant public health threats.  相似文献

It is welldocumented that endurance exercise training results in a bluntednorepinephrine (NE) response to exercise of a given absolute exerciseintensity. However, it is not clear what effect traininghas on the catecholamine response to exercise of the same relativeintensity because previous studies have provided conflicting results.The purpose of the present study was, therefore, to determine thecatecholamine response to exercise of the same relative exerciseintensity before and after endurance exercise training. Six women andthree men [age 28 ± 8 (SD) yr] performed 10 wk oftraining. Maximal O2 uptake(O2 max) wasdetermined during treadmill exercise. Fifteen-minute treadmill exercisebouts were performed at 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, and 85% ofO2 max before andafter training.O2 max was increasedby 20% (from 39.2 ± 7.7 to 46.9 ± 8.1 ml · kg1 · min1;P < 0.05) in response to training.Plasma NE concentrations were higher(P < 0.05) during exercise at thesame relative intensity after, compared with before, training at65-85% ofO2 max.Differences between heart rates and plasma epinephrine concentrationsafter, compared with before, training were not statisticallysignificant. These results provide evidence that the NE response toexercise is dependent on the absolute as well as the relative intensity of the exercise.  相似文献

Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors may influence human physiology, health, and performance by also modulating endocrine pathways. We evaluated the effects of a 2-day tadalafil administration on adenohypophyseal and adrenal hormone adaptation to exercise in humans. Fourteen healthy males were included in a double-blind crossover trial. Each volunteer randomly received two tablets of placebo or tadalafil (20 mg/day with a 36-h interval) before a maximal exercise was performed. After a 2-wk washout, the volunteers were crossed over. Blood samples were collected at -30 and -15 min and immediately before exercise, immediately after, and during recovery (+15, +30, +60, and +90 min) for adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), β-endorphin, growth hormone (GH), prolactin, cortisol (C), corticosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEAS), and cortisol binding globulin (CBG) assays. C-to-CBG (free cortisol index, FCI) and DHEAS-to-C ratios were calculated. Exercise intensity, perceived exertion rate, O? consumption, and CO? and blood lactate concentration were evaluated. ACTH, GH, C, corticosterone, and CBG absolute concentrations and/or areas under the curve (AUC) increased after exercise after both placebo and tadalafil. Exercise increased DHEAS only after placebo. Compared with placebo, tadalafil administration reduced the ACTH, C, corticosterone, and FCI responses to exercise and was associated with higher β-endorphin AUC and DHEAS-to-C ratio during recovery, without influencing cardiorespiratory and performance parameters. Tadalafil reduced the activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis during exercise by probably influencing the brain's nitric oxide- and cGMP-mediated pathways. Further studies are necessary to confirm our results and to identify the involved mechanisms, possible health risks, and potential clinical uses.  相似文献

Recent analyses of ancient Mesopotamian mitochondrial genomes have suggested a genetic link between the Indian subcontinent and Mesopotamian civilization. There is no consensus on the origin of the ancient Mesopotamians. They may be descendants of migrants, who founded regional Mesopotamian groups like that of Terqa or they may be merchants who were involved in trans Mesopotamia trade. To identify the Indian source population showing linkage to the ancient Mesopotamians, we screened a total of 15,751 mitochondrial DNAs (11,432 from the literature and 4,319 from this study) representing all major populations of India. Our results although suggest that south India (Tamil Nadu) and northeast India served as the source of the ancient Mesopotamian mtDNA gene pool, mtDNA of these ancient Mesopotamians probably contributed by Tamil merchants who were involved in the Indo-Roman trade.  相似文献

The effects of exercise on the molecular nature of secreted human growth hormone (GH) or its biological activity are not well understood. Plasma from women (average age 23.6 yr, n = 35), drawn before and after an acute heavy resistance exercise test, was fractionated by size exclusion chromatography into three size classes, namely, > 60 kDa (fraction A), 30-60 kDa (fraction B), and < 30 kDa (fraction C), before GH assay. Concentrations of GH in these fractions, as well as in unfractioned plasma, were measured by the Nichols immunoradiometric assay, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) polyclonal competitive RIA, Diagnostic Systems Laboratory's immunofunctional assay (measures dimerization-capable species), and the rat tibial bioassay. Significantly increased circulating GH concentrations of two- to fourfold were observed when immunoassays in unfractionated plasma samples were used, but they showed no significant change with use of the rat tibial bioassay. Significant exercise-induced increases in GH were found in fractions B and C but not in fraction A. Because chemical reduction of the samples before GH immunoassay significantly increased GH concentrations in fractions B and C (Nichols and NIDDK kits) after exercise, it is concluded that exercise may specifically increase release of disulfide-linked hormone molecules and/or fragments. Finally, because most of the GH released after exercise was able to dimerize the GH receptor in vitro, it is also concluded that these forms have the two intact binding sites required to initiate signal transduction in target cells.  相似文献

J. Appl.Physiol. 83(6): 2019-2028, 1997.To differentiatebetween transient (acute) and training (chronic) effects of exercise attwo different intensities on blood lipids and apolipoproteins (apo), 26 hypercholesterolemic men (cholesterol = 258 mg/dl, age = 47 yr, weight = 81.9 kg) trained three times per week for 24 wk, 350 kcal/session athigh (80% maximal O2 uptake,n = 12) or moderate (50% maximalO2 uptake, n = 14) intensity. Serum lipid andapolipoprotein (apo) concentrations (plasma volume adjusted) weremeasured before and immediately, 24, and 48 h after exercise on fourdifferent occasions corresponding to 0, 8, 16, and 24 wk of training.Data were analyzed using three-way repeated-measures multivariateanalysis of variance followed by analysis of variance and Duncan'sprocedures ( = 0.05). A transient 6% rise inlow-density-lipoprotein cholesterol measured before training at the24-h time point was no longer evident after training. Triglyceridesfell and total cholesterol, high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), HDL3-C, apo A-I, and apoB rose 24-48 h after exercise regardless of training or intensity.Total cholesterol, HDL3-C, apoA-I, and apo B were lower andHDL2-C was higher after trainingthan before training. Thus exercise training and a single session ofexercise exert distinct and interactive effects on lipids andapolipoproteins. These results support the practice of training atleast every other day to obtain optimal exercise benefits.

The influence of exercise mode and 6%carbohydrate (C) vs. placebo (P) beverage ingestion on granulocyte andmonocyte phagocytosis and oxidative burst activity (GMPOB) afterprolonged and intensive exertion was measured in 10 triathletes. Thetriathletes acted as their own controls and ran or cycled for 2.5 h at~75% maximal O2 uptake,ingesting C or P (4 total sessions, random order, with beveragesadministered in double-blind fashion). During the 2.5-h exercise bouts,C or P (4 ml/kg) was ingested every 15 min. Five blood samples werecollected (15 min before exercise, immediately after exercise, and 1.5, 3, and 6 h after exercise). The pattern of change over time for GMPOBwas significantly different between C and P conditions(P  0.05), with postexercise valueslower during the C trials. Little difference was measured betweenrunning and cycling modes. C relative to P ingestion (but not exercise mode) was associated with higher plasma levels of glucose and insulin,lower plasma levels of cortisol and growth hormone, and lower bloodneutrophil and monocyte cell counts. These data indicate that C vs. Pingestion is associated with higher plasma glucose levels, anattenuated cortisol response, and lower GMPOB.

This paper presents the basis of DNA genealogy, a new field of science, which is currently emerging as an unusual blend of biochemistry, history, linguistics, and chemical kinetics. The methodology of the new approach is comprised of chemical (biological) kinetics applied to a pattern of mutations in non-recombinant fragments of DNA (Y chromosome and mtDNA, the latter not being considered in this overview). The goal of the analysis is to translate DNA mutation patterns into time spans to the most recent common ancestors of a given population or tribe and to the dating of ancient migration routes. To illustrate this approach, time spans to the common ancestors are calculated for ethnic Russians, that is Eastern Slavs (R1a1 tribe), Western Slavs (I1 and I2 tribes), and Northern (or Uralic) Slavs (N1c tribe), which were found to live around 4600 years before present (R1a1), 3650 ybp (I1), 3000 and 10,500 ybp (I2, two principal DNA lineages), and 3525 ybp (N1c) (confidence intervals are given in the main text). The data were compared with the respective dates for the nearest common ancestor of the R1a1 “Indo-European” population in India, who lived 4050 years before present, whose descendants represent the majority of the upper castes in India today (up to 72%). Furthermore, it was found that the haplotypes of ethnic Russians of the R1a1 haplogroup (up to 62% of the population in the Russian Federation) and those of the R1a1 Indians (more than 100 million today) are practically identical to each other, up to 67-marker haplotypes. This essentially solves a 200-year-old mystery of who were the Aryans who arrived in India around 3500 years before the present. Haplotypes and time spans to the ancient common ancestors were also compared for the ethnic Russians of haplogroups I1 and I2, on one hand, and the respective I1 and I2 populations in Eastern and Western Europe and Scandinavia, on the other. It is suggested that the approach described in this overview lays the foundation for “molecular history”, in which the principal tool is high-technology analysis of DNA molecules of both our contemporaries and excavated ancient DNA samples, along with their biological kinetics.  相似文献
