European Tissue Banks should carry out a physical examination as a part of the donor selection procedure. This is one of the obligations concerning donation and procurement mentioned in the European Commission directives on tissue banking. As the directives do not give any further specification on the content or on the procedure of the physical examination, a search of literature was done in order to find more information. Although data in literature generally remain quite vague, it was possible to set up a list of items which should be looked at during physical examination. This list can be used temporarily until further information is gathered from an international survey and from a risk assessment analysis.  相似文献

Dr. Ellen R. Wiebe''s study of the use of methotrexate and misoprostol in combination for early termination of intrauterine pregnancy (see pages 165 to 170 of this issue) is the first Canadian study of the use of this drug combination for medical abortion. The authors compare Wiebe''s findings with those of earlier studies on methotrexate and misoprostol, as well as with European findings on the use of mifepristone with prostaglandins. The authors argue that although the methotrexate-misoprostol combination appears to be reasonably safe for the woman, the failure rate and the teratogenicity of methotrexate and misoprosol give cause for concern. The authors conclude that medical abortions ought to be offered only where there is adequate access to laboratory and surgical facilities and where losses to follow-up are systematically minimized to reduce the potential for continued pregnancy resulting in congenital abnormality.  相似文献

Summary Brink (1982) characterizes the distribution of standing crop of nectar for Delphinium nelsonii as bonanzablank, based on comparison with a Poisson. He then discusses possible effects of standing crop variability on pollinator foraging behavior. We disagree with the use of the Poisson and the resulting conclusions. The expected distribution should not be based on doling out random amounts of nectar to flowers, but based on random return times to flowers by pollinators (elapsed time=nectar accumulated). When this model is used, standing crop variance does not differ markedly from expectation. What differences do exist can be accounted for by variability in nectar production rates of individual plants. We also take issue with the use of the bonanza-blank terminology. As originally formulated this refers to nectar production differences within a plant rather than standing crop differences among plants.  相似文献

Hosts have evolved a diverse range of defence mechanisms in response to challenge by infectious organisms (parasites and pathogens). Whether defence is through avoidance of infection, control of the growth of the parasite once infected, clearance of the infection, tolerance to the disease caused by infection or innate and/or acquired immunity, it will have important implications for the population ecology (epidemiology) of the host-parasite interaction. As a consequence, it is important to understand the evolutionary dynamics of defence in the light of the ecological feedbacks that are intrinsic to the interaction. Here, we review the theoretical models that examine how these feedbacks influence the nature and extent of the defence that will evolve. We begin by briefly comparing different evolutionary modelling approaches and discuss in detail the modern game theoretical approach (adaptive dynamics) that allows ecological feedbacks to be taken into account. Next, we discuss a number of models of host defence in detail and, in particular, make a distinction between 'resistance' and 'tolerance'. Finally, we discuss coevolutionary models and the potential use of models that include genetic and game theoretical approaches. Our aim is to review theoretical approaches that investigate the evolution of defence and to explain how the type of defence and the costs associated with its acquisition are important in determining the level of defence that evolves.  相似文献

Zebrafish, Danio rerio, possess a well-developed sense of smell which governs a variety of behaviors. Both the number of odorant receptor genes and the number of modules in the olfactory bulb (glomeruli) are about an order of magnitude smaller than those of mammals. Nevertheless, the spatial organization of functional properties within the sensory surface and the olfactory bulb are comparable to those of mammals. The quantitatively reduced olfactory system of zebrafish, together with the suitability of this species for developmental and genetic studies, make zebrafish an interesting model system to study olfactory differentiation and neuronal representation of olfactory information.  相似文献

Historically, Australia has been important in the study of, and the development of hypotheses aimed at understanding, the evolution of viviparity in amniote vertebrates. Part of the importance of Australia in the field results from a rich fauna of skinks, including one of the broadest ranges of diversity of placental structures within one geographic region. During the last decade, we have focussed our studies on one lineage, the Eugongylus group of skinks of the subfamily Lygosominae because it contains oviparous species and some that exhibit complex placentae. Our specific objective has been to attempt to understand the fundamental steps required when viviparity, and ultimately complex placentae, evolve from oviparous ancestors. We have taken a three-prong approach: (1) detailed study of the morphology and ontogeny of the placentae of key species at the light microscope level; (2) study of changes in the uterus associated with pregnancy, or the plasma membrane transformation; and (3) measures of the net exchange of nutrients across the placenta or eggshell of key species. In turn, we have found that: (1) details of the morphology and ontogeny of placentae are more complex that originally envisaged, and that the early conclusions about a sequence in the evolution of complex placentae was naïve; (2) a plasma membrane transformation occurs in viviparous, but not oviparous lizards, and thus may be a fundamental feature of the evolution of viviparity in amniotes; and (3) species with more complex chorioallantoic placentae tend to transport more nutrients across the placenta during pregnancy than those with simpler chorioallantoic placentae but, because the correlation is not tight, the importance of the omphaloplacenta in transporting nutrients may have been overlooked. Also, the composition of yolk of highly matrotrophic species is broadly similar, but not identical, to the yolk of oviparous species. Some of the interpretation of our data within the context of our specific objective is not yet possible, pending the publication of a robust phylogeny of Eugongylus group skinks. Once such a phylogeny is available, we are in a position to propose specific hypotheses about the evolution of viviparity that can be tested using another lineage of amniotes, possibly Mabuya group skinks.  相似文献

Parasites are common in many ecosystems, yet because of their nature, they do not fossilise readily and are very rare in the geological record. This makes it challenging to study the evolutionary transition that led to the evolution of parasitism in different taxa. Most studies on the evolution of parasites are based on phylogenies of extant species that were constructed based on morphological and molecular data, but they give us an incomplete picture and offer little information on many important details of parasite–host interactions. The lack of fossil parasites also means we know very little about the roles that parasites played in ecosystems of the past even though it is known that parasites have significant influences on many ecosystems. The goal of this review is to bring attention to known fossils of parasites and parasitism, and provide a conceptual framework for how research on fossil parasites can develop in the future. Despite their rarity, there are some fossil parasites which have been described from different geological eras. These fossils include the free‐living stage of parasites, parasites which became fossilised with their hosts, parasite eggs and propagules in coprolites, and traces of pathology inflicted by parasites on the host's body. Judging from the fossil record, while there were some parasite–host relationships which no longer exist in the present day, many parasite taxa which are known from the fossil record seem to have remained relatively unchanged in their general morphology and their patterns of host association over tens or even hundreds of millions of years. It also appears that major evolutionary and ecological transitions throughout the history of life on Earth coincided with the appearance of certain parasite taxa, as the appearance of new host groups also provided new niches for potential parasites. As such, fossil parasites can provide additional data regarding the ecology of their extinct hosts, since many parasites have specific life cycles and transmission modes which reflect certain aspects of the host's ecology. The study of fossil parasites can be conducted using existing techniques in palaeontology and palaeoecology, and microscopic examination of potential material such as coprolites may uncover more fossil evidence of parasitism. However, I also urge caution when interpreting fossils as examples of parasites or parasitism‐induced traces. I point out a number of cases where parasitism has been spuriously attributed to some fossil specimens which, upon re‐examination, display traits which are just as (if not more) likely to be found in free‐living taxa. The study of parasite fossils can provide a more complete picture of the ecosystems and evolution of life throughout Earth's history.  相似文献

Patch occupancy surveys are commonly used to parameterize metapopulation models. If isolation predicts patch occupancy, this is generally attributed to a balance between distance-dependent recolonization and spatially independent extinctions. We investigated whether similar patterns could also be generated by a process of spatially correlated extinctions following a unique colonization event (analogous to nonequilibrium processes in island biogeography). We simulated effects of spatially correlated extinctions on patterns of patch occupancy among pikas (Ochotona princeps) at Bodie, California, using randomly located extinction disks to represent the likely effects of predation. Our simulations produced similar patterns to those cited as evidence of balanced metapopulation dynamics. Simulations using a variety of disk sizes and patch configurations confirmed that our results are potentially applicable to a broad range of species and sites. Analyses of the observed patterns of patch occupancy at Bodie revealed little evidence of rescue effects and strong evidence that most recolonizations are ephemeral in nature. Persistence will be overestimated if static or declining patterns of patch occupancy are mistakenly attributed to dynamically stable metapopulation processes. Consequently, simple patch occupancy surveys should not be considered as substitutes for detailed experimental tests of hypothesized population processes, particularly when conservation concerns are involved.  相似文献

Some neuroscientists argue that detailed maps of synaptic connectivity--wiring diagrams--will be needed if we are to understand how the brain underlies behavior and how brain malfunctions underlie behavioral disorders. Such large-scale circuit reconstruction, which has been called connectomics, may soon be possible, owing to numerous advances in technologies for image acquisition and processing. Yet, the community is divided on the feasibility and value of the enterprise. Remarkably similar objections were voiced when the Human Genome Project, now widely viewed as a success, was first proposed. We revisit that controversy to ask if it holds any lessons for proposals to map the connectome.  相似文献

Argument still continues about what properties of a plant organ the pressure chamber measures. A mechanical (as opposed to a thermodynamic) analysis is made of the system squeezed by the pressurized gas, the non-gaseous part of the leaf. The boundary of the system is defined so that it remains at constant mass, and constant density is assumed, during the squeeze. This is equivalent to assuming constant volume. On those assumptions, it is shown that the liquid is brought to the cut surface by a change of shape of the system. Generic mechanical principles are then used to deduce a priori, a quantitative interpretation of the balance pressure. The formal mechanical interpretation involves two variables, the interfacial tension and the change in surface area, which cannot currently be measured. Instead of these, we used two related variables which can be measured, the mass fraction of water in the leaf (Q) and the maximum mass fraction of water at full saturation (Qx) to deduce an approximate mechanical interpretation. When Q is close to Qx, we deduced that the balance pressure (Pb) required for the shape change should be approximately proportional to the reduction in mass in changing from Qx to Q, a variable called the relative water loss (RWL). The constant of proportionality (kappa) is a basic characteristic of the type of leaf used, and the final relation, Pb=kappa (RWL) is called Relation A. We then deduce that the constant kappa should be an approximately linear function of Qx. The linear function is defined by limiting values, so that when Qx is 1, kappa is predicted to be 0 bar, and at the other extreme, when Qx is 0, kappa is predicted to be in the range 500-1000 bar. This is called Relation B. Experiments with 32 leaves from 10 species are used to test the mechanical interpretation. The results showed that Relation A was a reasonable approximation for most of the tested leaves. The data for 10 species, were used to estimate Relation B, confirming that as Qx approached 1, kappa did approach 0 bar as predicted, and that as Qx approached 0, kappa approached approximately 750 bar, consistent with the a priori prediction of 500-1000 bar. The relations were also successfully tested using independent published data. An estimate of Qx is shown to be of considerable practical value in (a) converting Pb to water status and vice versa; (b) characterizing leaf morphology and composition; and (c) rationalizing quantitatively the functional classes of xerophytes, mesophytes and hygrophytes. The assumption of constant density inside the outer boundary of the non-gaseous material cannot be guaranteed, and when this is violated, our (or any other) interpretation of Pb is unreliable. Investigation of the conditions under which this assumption is invalid should be a high priority.  相似文献

Classic ectomycorrhizal symbioses are mutualisms that involvethe exchange of fixed carbon for mineral nutrients between plantroots and fungi. They are unique in the way they contain featuresof both intimate and diffuse symbioses. The degree of host specificityvaries, particularly among the fungi. Here we examine two exceptionalcases of specificity to see what they tell us about the advantagesof specificity, how it is initiated, and the potential rolethat it plays in complex ecosystems. The first case involvesnon-photosynthetic epiparasitic plants, which contrary to virtuallyall other plants, exhibit high levels of specificity towardtheir fungal hosts. The second case involves suilloid fungi;this is the largest monophyletic group of ectomycorrhizal fungithat is essentially restricted to associations with a singleplant family. In both cases, new symbioses are initiated bydormant propagules that are stimulated to germinate by chemicalcues from the host. This reduces the cost of wasting propaguleson non-hosts. The advantages of specificity remain unclear inboth cases, but we argue that increased benefit to the specialistmay result from specialized physiological adaptations. We reexaminethe idea that specialist fungi may help their hosts competein complex ecosystems by reducing facultative epiparasitismby other plants, and suggest an alternative hypothesis for theobserved pattern.  相似文献

An important feature of Neisseria meningitidis is its ability to invade the meninges. This requires that bacteria cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which is one of the tightest barriers of the body. N. meningitidis has, therefore, evolved very sophisticated means by which it circumvents the physical properties of this cellular barrier. Recent advances have allowed the identification of several steps that might occur in the interaction of N. meningitidis with the BBB and the transit of the bacteria to the meninges.  相似文献

Studies performed in the last two decades demonstrate that after successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of a chronically occluded coronary artery, the physiology of the chronic total occlusion (CTO) vessel and dependent microvasculature does not normalise immediately but improves significantly over time. Generally, there is an increase in fractional flow reserve (FFR) in the CTO artery, a decrease in collateral blood supply and an increase in FFR in the donor artery accompanied by an increase in blood flow and decrease in microvascular resistance in the myocardium supplied by the CTO vessel. Analogous to these physiological changes, positive remodelling of the distal CTO artery also occurs over time, and intravascular imaging can be helpful for analysing distal vessel parameters. Follow-up coronary angiography with physiological measurements after several weeks to months can be helpful and informative in a subset of patients in order to decide upon the necessity for treatment of residual coronary artery stenosis in the vessel distal to the CTO or in the contralateral donor artery, as well as in deciding whether stent optimisation is indicated. We suggest that such physiological guidance of CTO procedures avoids unnecessary overtreatment during the initial procedure, guides interventions at follow-up, and improves our understanding of what PCI in CTO means.

An rRNA phylogeny of 22 species of ciliates belonging to seven of Small and Lynn's eight classes has been obtained by distance and parsimony methods. It displays good congruence with classical systematics at low taxonomic levels and several major surprises at higher levels: (1) The species analyzed group into five major branches, four of which emerge almost simultaneously: hypotrichs, oligohymenophorans, lito-stomes, and nassophoreans corresponding to four of Small and Lynn's classes. The simultaneous emergence of these groups contradicts the long accepted view that litostomes (a group with “simple”, symmetrical, apical oral apparatus) are “primitive,” while hypotrichs are “highly evolved.” (2) Heterotrichs group with a karyorelictid, together forming the first emerging branch. While this supports the view that karyorelictids may be early-emerging ciliates, it completely explodes the traditional “spirotrichs” taxon, which united heterotrichs and hypotrichs. Instead, this reinforces the concept of Postciliodesmatophora and suggests that asymmetric oral apparatuses (i.e., with distinct paroral and adoral ciliatures) may be primitive in ciliates. The global topology of the tree therefore does not fit with the classical views of ciliate evolution, from “simple” oral apparatus and stomatogenesis to “complex” ones. Instead, a rather striking agreement with the strategy adopted to construct the cortical framework was disclosed. We noted that the cytoskeletal elements used to strengthen the cell surface could be subdivided into four main types: epiplasm, filaments, continuous microtu-bules, or basal body derived fibers. These four types fitted quite well with the major evolutionary lines disclosed by the molecular phylogeny. We therefore discuss unorthodox hypotheses assuming an early explosive radiation of ciliates into a small number of major lineages differing essentially in the solution adopted to subtend the cell surface and anchor the infraciliature. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The Parabasala are a primitive group of protists divided into two classes: the trichomonads and the hypermastigids. Until recently, phylogeny and taxonomy of parabasalids were mainly based on the comparative analysis of morphological characters primarily linked to the development of their cytoskeleton. Recent use of molecular markers, such as small subunit (SSU) rRNA has led to now insights into the systematics of the Parabasala and other groups of prolists. An updated phylogeny based on SSU rRNA is provided and compared to that inferred from ultrastructural data. The SSU rRNA phylogeny contradicts the dogma equating simple characters with pumitive characters. Hypermastigids, possessing a hyperdeveloped cytoskeleton, exhibit the most basal emergence in the parabasalid lineage. Other observations emerge from the SSU rRNA analysis, such as the secondary loss of some cytoskeleton structures in all representatives of the Monocercomonadidae, the existence of secondarily free living taxa (reversibility of parasitism) and the evidence against the co-evolution of the endobiotic parabasalids and their animal hosts. According to phylogenies based on SSU rRNA, all the trichomonad families are not monophyletic groups, putting into question the validity of current taxonomic assignments. The precise branching order of some taxa remains unclear, but this issue can possibly be addressed by the molecular analysis of additional parabasalids. The goal of such additional analyses would be to propose, in a near future, a revision of the taxonomy of this group of protists that takes into account both molecular and morphological data.  相似文献
