Apiomorpha Rubsaamen (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Eriococcidae) is one of the most chromosomally diverse of all animal genera. There is extensive karyotypic variation within many of the morphologically defined species, including A. munita (Schrader) which is here reported to have diploid chromosome counts ranging from 6 to more than 100. Each of the three morphologically defined subspecies of A. munita also displays considerable chromosomal variation: A. m. tereticornuta Gullan (2 n = 6, 8, 20, 22 or 24), A. m. malleensis Gullan (2 n = 6, 20, 22, 24 or 26), and A. m. munita (Schrader) (2 n = 54 or >100). Apiomorpha munita appears to occur only on eucalypts of the informal subgenus Symphyomyrtus , with each of the subspecies of A. munita restricted to discrete symphyomyrt sections. Several different karyotypic forms within each subspecies of A. munita appear to be restricted to only one or a few eucalypt species or series. The association between apparent host specificity and chromosomal rearrangements in A. munita suggests that both may be playing an active role in taxon divergence in Apiomorpha.  相似文献

1. Previously, the Yangtze River connected thousands of shallow lakes which together formed a potamo-lacustrine system capable of sustaining a rich variety of submerged macrophytes.
2.  Potamogeton malaianus is one of the dominant submerged macrophytes in many lakes of this area. Genetic variation and population structure of P. malaianus populations from ten lakes in the potamo-lacustrine system were assessed using inter-simple sequence repeat markers.
3. Twelve primer combinations produced a total of 166 unambiguous bands of which 117 (70.5%) were polymorphic. Potamogeton malaianus exhibited a moderate level of population genetic diversity ( P P = 70.5%, H E = 0.163 and I =  0.255), as compared with that of plants in the same habitat and range. The main factors responsible for this moderate value were the plant's mixed breeding system (both sexual and asexual) and the hydrological connectivity among habitats.
4.  F statistics, calculated using different approaches, consistently revealed a moderate genetic differentiation among populations, contributing about 20% of total genetic diversity. An estimate of gene flow (using F ST) suggested that gene flow played a more important role than genetic drift in the current population genetic structure of P. malaianus ( Nm  = 1.131).
5. The genetic diversity of P. malaianus did not increase downstream. A high level of linkage–disequilibrium at the whole population level suggested that metapopulation processes may affect genetic structure. The migration pattern of P. malaianus was best explained by a two-dimensional stepping stone model, indicating that bird-mediated dispersal could greatly influence gene movements among lakes.  相似文献

The comparative genetic structure of hosts and their parasites has important implications for their coevolution, but has been investigated in relatively few systems. In this study, we analysed the genetic structure and diversity of the New Zealand intertidal snail Zeacumantus subcarinatus ( n  =   330) and two of its trematode parasites, Maritrema novaezealandensis ( n  =   269) and Philophthalmus sp. ( n  =   246), using cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene ( COI ) sequences. Snails and trematodes were examined from 11 collection sites representing three regions on the South Island of New Zealand. Zeacumantus subcarinatus displayed low genetic diversity per geographic locality, strong genetic structure following an isolation by distance pattern, and low migration rates at the scale of the study. In contrast, M. novaezealandensis possessed high genetic diversity, genetic homogeneity among collection sites and high migration rates. Genetic diversity and migration rates were typically lower for Philophthalmus sp. compared to M. novaezealandensis and it displayed weak to moderate genetic structure. The observed patterns likely result from the limited dispersal ability of the direct developing snail and the utilization of bird definitive hosts by the trematodes. In addition, snails may occasionally experience long-distance dispersal. Discrepancies between trematode species may result from differences in their effective population sizes and/or life history traits.  相似文献

Aims:  Clonality among high-level gentamicin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (HLGR-EF) isolates obtained from clinical and sewage treatment plants (STP) were investigated using PhePlate system (PhP), ribotyping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE).
Methods and Results:  During 1 year study (September 2005–2006), a total of 106 HLGR-EF isolates were collected from clinical ( n  = 48) and STP ( n  = 58) samples in Tehran, Iran. Biochemical fingerprinting of these isolates using the PhP showed the presence of 21 PhP types (diversity index, Di  = 0·97) among the clinical and 21 PhP types ( Di  = 0·91) among the STP isolates. Representative isolates of each PhP type ( n  = 42) were further characterized by the ribotyping method. Sixteen ribotypes were identified among the isolates with five types shared between the clinical and STP isolates. PFGE recognized 24 clonal types among these isolates with three pulsotypes shared between the clinical and STP isolates. Combination of the two techniques (PFGE and ribotyping) resulted in 24 ( Di  = 0·96) and 16 ( Di  = 0·93) types among the strains isolated from clinical and STP samples, respectively.
Conclusions:  We concluded that the combination of PhP typing, ribotyping and PFGE could be extremely discriminatory when examining HLGR-EF isolates.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  The emergence of highly diverse HLGR-EF population in Iran is of serious concern especially because of their multi-resistances.  相似文献

Background  Study of endocrine pathology in animal models is critical to understanding endocrine pathology in humans.
Methods  We evaluated 434 endocrine-related diagnoses from 4619 baboon necropsies, established the incidence of spontaneous endocrine pathology, and analyzed the clinical and biochemical data associated with the individual cases.
Results  The most common diagnoses in descending order, were pancreatic islet cell amyloidosis (n = 259), ovarian cysts (n = 50), pituitary adenoma (n = 37), pancreatic islet cell adenoma (n = 20), granulosa cell tumor (n = 15), thyroid adenoma (n = 11), adrenal hyperplasia (n = 10), thyroid carcinoma (n = 8), and pheochromocytoma (n = 6). The incidence of pancreatic islet cell amyloidosis progressively increased with age. Pheochromocytomas were associated with renal and heart failure. The incidence of pancreatic islet cell amyloidosis and adrenal pathology was similar to humans; the incidence of pituitary adenoma and thyroid pathology was lower than in humans.
Conclusions  Endocrine disease in baboons is common and shares clinical and biochemical characteristics with endocrine disease in humans.  相似文献

The Hengduan Mountains are the core region of the Himalaya hotspot, and are renowned for their high levels of endemism. Gentiana atuntsiensis and G. striolata are two closely related and morphologically similar species endemic to this region. In this study, inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used to investigate the genetic structure within these two species, as well as the differentiation between them. An analysis of molecular variance-derived estimate demonstrated only 13.5% of genetic differentiation between the two species. Considering their adjacent distribution patterns, low genetic divergence, and clear clustering into two groups, it is hypothesized that the two species arose from a rapid and recent speciation event induced mainly by geographical isolation. A relatively high level of genetic diversity was revealed in each species (Shannon's index of diversity: H sp = 0.324 and 0.391; H pop = 0.225 and 0.274; for G. atuntsiensis and G. striolata , respectively). Most of the genetic variation was partitioned within populations ( Ø ST = 0.232 and 0.226 in G. atuntsiensis and G. striolata , respectively). The large population sizes, outcrossing breeding system, and small, light seeds that disperse widely may explain the genetic structure in both species.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London. Landscape-scale population genetic structure in vagile vertebrates was commonly considered to be a contradiction in terms whereas recent studies have demonstrated behaviour and habitat associated structure in several such species. We investigate whether landscape features influence morphological and genetic differentiation in a widespread, mobile raptor. To accurately describe genetic differentiation associated with regional landscape factors, we first investigated subspecies relationships at a continental scale. We used 17 microsatellite loci and five morphological measurements to investigate differentiation between eastern and western subspecies of red-tailed hawks ( Buteo jamaicensis ) and to identify patterns between differentiation and habitat within western North America. Bayesian and frequency-based analyses of microsatellite data revealed clear distinctions between B. j. borealis (eastern) and B. j. calurus (western) samples. Furthermore, hawks sampled in Texas were stouter than those collected from the Rocky Mountains and farther west. Among western samples, birds from the Great Basin, Rocky Mountains, and Washington were significantly different in morphology than those from Oregon and California. We identified a pattern of isolation by distance among western breeding sites around the Sierra Nevada. Given the long-range dispersal capabilities of raptors, this pattern suggests that population-specific habitat preferences, corresponding with habitat breaks between eastern and western slopes of the Sierra Nevada, and/or regionally variable population densities limit migration between the Mediterranean habitat of central California and the xeric habitats of southern California and interior west. We suggest habitat preferences and regionally disparate population densities may play a role in shaping genetic structure in vagile avian taxa.  相似文献

In heterogeneous environments, landscape features directly affect the structure of genetic variation among populations by functioning as barriers to gene flow. Resource‐associated population genetic structure, in which populations that use different resources (e.g., host plants) are genetically distinct, is a well‐studied example of how environmental heterogeneity structures populations. However, the pattern that emerges in a given landscape should depend on its particular combination of resources. If resources constitute barriers to gene flow, population differentiation should be lowest in homogeneous landscapes, and highest where resources exist in equal proportions. In this study, we tested whether host community diversity affects population genetic structure in a beetle (Bolitotherus cornutus) that exploits three sympatric host fungi. We collected B. cornutus from plots containing the three host fungi in different proportions and quantified population genetic structure in each plot using a panel of microsatellite loci. We found no relationship between host community diversity and population differentiation in this species; however, we also found no evidence of resource‐associated differentiation, suggesting that host fungi are not substantial barriers to gene flow. Moreover, we detected no genetic differentiation among B. cornutus populations separated by several kilometers, even though a previous study demonstrated moderate genetic structure on the scale of a few hundred meters. Although we found no effect of community diversity on population genetic structure in this study, the role of host communities in the structuring of genetic variation in heterogeneous landscapes should be further explored in a species that exhibits resource‐associated population genetic structure.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. A seasonally replicated experimental design was used to address the question of how differences within and among host tree species affect arboreal caterpillar communities.
2. Seasonal variation influenced caterpillar community composition most significantly, and the similarity among caterpillar assemblages did not necessarily follow the pattern of phylogenetic relatedness among host trees.
3. Species richness and abundance of caterpillars were higher on oaks and maples than on American beech. Diversity partitioning models revealed that β diversity was only occasionally greater or less than expected by chance alone.
4. When β diversity was significant, values tended to be greater than expected by chance among replicate trees within each species and lower than expected by chance among the four tree species.
5. Differences among trees appeared important for determining patterns of species presence/absence for rare species and influencing patterns of species dominance within caterpillar assemblages. Differences among tree species had a significant effect on overall lepidopteran community composition and mean species diversity (i.e. α diversity).
6. Because β diversity of caterpillars among host trees was lower than expected by chance, host specificity within the Lepidoptera may be less prevalent than thought previously.  相似文献

Allozyme diversity was studied within and among populations of five related taxa of Antirrhinum L. endemic to the Iberian Peninsula ( A. graniticum Rothm. ssp. graniticum , ssp. brachycalyx Sutton and ssp. ambiguum (Lange) Mateu & Segarra, A. boissieri Rothm. and A. onubensis (Fdez. Casas) Fdez. Casas). All of the studied taxa are obligate outcrossing endemic perennial herbs which form isolated populations. However, the taxa vary in range and population sizes, and are found on different soil types. The level and distribution of allozyme diversity differed widely between taxa: A. graniticum ssp. brachycalyx had the lowest level of allozyme diversity (HT = 0.09), whilst the highest level was detected in A. boissieri (HT = 0.25). Total variation was partitioned into within- and among-population variation. The proportion attributable to variation within populations varied from about 67% up to 84.3% and 89.5% in A. graniticum ssp. brachycalyx and A. graniticum ssp. ambiguum , respectively. Both these subspecies also showed little population divergence (GST = 0.10 and 0.09, respectively) and had high levels of estimated gene flow (Nm = 2.18 and 2.62, respectively). These results are discussed in relation to geographical proximity of populations and habitat continuity. Isolation by distance was not detected in any of the studied taxa. This result suggests that divergence among populations is due to random genetic drift.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London . Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 79 , 299–307.  相似文献

Aim  To explore the genetic and phylogeographic structure of a temperate forest species, Pinus strobiformis Englem., in a subtropical region in the context of climate change during the Pleistocene. It is expected that the colder conditions during glacial stages favoured range expansions of P. strobiformis , thus promoting gene flow.
Location  Mexico and the United States.
Methods  Estimates of genetic diversity and structure were obtained using chloroplast microsatellite loci of 23 populations of P. strobiformis across its entire range, seven neighbouring populations of Pinus ayacahuite Ehrenb. ex. Schtdl, and one population of Pinus flexilis James.
Results  The genetic diversity of P. strobiformis ( H e = 0.856) was found to be high, especially in western populations, whereas eastern populations were less variable and more genetically similar to P. ayacahuite of central Mexico. We found evidence of significant phylogeographic structure ( N ST = 0.444; P  =   0.026), high genetic structure ( R ST = 0.270), and isolation by distance. Pairwise R ST and samova (spatial analysis of molecular variance) results indicated an east–west partition of genetic variation, with populations within each group showing little differentiation and no isolation by distance.
Main conclusions  The phylogeographic structure of P. strobiformis across the entire range was pronounced, with two main genetic and geographic groups separated by the Chihuahuan Desert. However, within each of the two groups there was little population differentiation and no isolation by distance, suggesting genetic connectivity as a result of population expansions within these areas during glacial stages.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Dispersal plays an integral role in determining spatial population structure and, consequently, the long-term survival of many species. Theoretical studies indicate that dispersal increases with population density and decreasing habitat stability. In the case of monophagous insect herbivores, the stability of host-plant populations may influence their spatial population structure.
2. The tallgrass prairie in Iowa, U.S.A. is highly fragmented and most prairie insects face a landscape with fewer habitat patches and smaller host-plant populations than 150 years ago, potentially making dispersal between patches difficult. Some herbivores, however, use native plant species with weedy characteristics that have increased in abundance because of disturbances.
3. Mark–recapture data and presence–absence surveys were used to examine dispersal and spatial population structure of two monophagous beetles with host plants that exhibit different population stability and have responded differently to fragmentation of tallgrass prairie.
4. Chrysochus auratus Fabricius exhibits a patchy population structure and has relatively large dispersal distances and frequencies. Its host plant is variable locally in time and space, but is more abundant than 150 years ago. The other species, Anomoea laticlavia Forster, exhibits a metapopulation or non-equilibrium population structure and has relatively small dispersal distances and frequencies. Its host-plant populations are stable in time and space.
5. The results indicate that dispersal ability of monophagous beetles reflects the life-history dynamics of their host plants, but the spatial population structure exhibited today is strongly influenced by how the host plants have responded to the fragmentation process over both time and space.  相似文献

Host-race formation remains controversial as a source of herbivorous insect diversity, and examples of host races are still fairly scarce. In this study, analysis of five enzyme loci in the ostensibly generalist tumbling flower beetle Mordellistena convicta (Coleoptera: Mordellidae) revealed hidden host-plant and plant-organ related genetic differentiation. Mordellistena convicta turned out to be a complex of cryptomorphic species, each with fewer hosts than the nominal species. These cryptic species, in turn, were divided into taxa that showed host-race characteristics: samples from different host plants and organs exhibited (1) genetic indications of partial reproductive isolation, (2) differences in size and emergence timing that suggested divergent host-related selection, and (3) among-host selective differences in mortality from parasitoids. Host-race formation in M. convicta, which has a somewhat different life history from the well-studied host races, enlarges the group of insects considered likely to undergo this process. The widespread sympatry of the M. convicta species complex, along with its spectrum of host-correlated genetic differentiation, suggests that these host specialist taxa developed in sympatry.  相似文献

Abstract  Scale insects of the genus Apiomorpha Rübsaamen (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Eriococcidae) induce sexually dimorphic galls on Eucalyptus, but the Apiomorpha pharetrata species-group is unusual in that nymphal males aggregate on the surface of the maternal gall where they induce a compound structure. Although originally described as distinct species on the basis of differences in gall morphology, A. pharetrata (Schrader) and A. thorntoni (Froggatt) were subsequently synonymised, primarily because the adult females of the two are morphologically indistinguishable. The two gall types of A. pharetrata sensu lato are allopatric and found on different host eucalypt species. To test the hypothesis that gall morphology may be determined by the host species on which the female feeds, we reared crawlers of field-collected females from both gall types on eucalypts in a glasshouse. Both gall types were induced on the same eucalypt species, with the gall type matching that of the maternal gall from which the crawlers had emerged. This indicates that it is the insect, not the host, that determines the gall morphology in these taxa. In addition, insects from the two gall types were different chromosomally and could be distinguished by one fixed allozyme difference. Thus, Brachyscelis (=  Apiomorpha ) thorntoni (Froggatt) revised status is removed from synonymy with Brachyscelis (=  Apiomorpha ) pharetrata (Schrader), and recognised as a distinct biological species. However, the extent of chromosomal variation among the populations of both A. pharetrata and A. thorntoni suggests that there may be further cryptic species present.  相似文献

1. Crowding `info-chemicals', metabolites released into the environment that act as signals to conspecifics as well as other organisms, have often been shown to cause phenotypic plasticity in cladoceran life-history traits including morphology, reproductive strategy and sex induction. Effects on population demography and diversity, however, have not been examined directly.
2. Replicate laboratory populations of the zooplankter, Daphnia magna, were started with 250 juveniles and allowed to develop for 8 weeks in 10 L flow-through aquaria with food levels of 1 mg CL–1. Two crowded water treatments from different clonal sources were compared with untreated water as a control.
3. The presence of crowding chemicals affected initial population structure, through reduction in parthenogenetic female body lengths, brood sizes and juvenile densities. However, the timing of population density maxima and subsequent population structure, clonal composition and diversity were similar among all treatments.
4. Clonal richness remained slightly higher in untreated populations because of increased prevalence of rare clones.
5. Exploitation competition had greater impact on population structure than the relative concentration of crowding chemicals, indicating that density dependent effects were mediated primarily by competition for common resources.
6. Crowding info-chemicals may play a greater role in community structure than in single species population structure because of taxonomic diversity in species' response that may be unrelated to the source species density.  相似文献

Drosophila antonietae is an endemic South American cactophilic species found in relictual xerophytic vegetation, mostly associated with Cereus hildmaniannus cactus. Low differentiation among populations of this species has been detected using several markers. In this work, we performed an allozyme genetic variability analysis of 11 natural populations of D. antonietae and included a discussion about the possible influences of several evolutionary processes that might be acting to maintain the pattern observed. The genetic variability of 14 isoenzyme loci was analysed and showed a high genetic diversity (average observed heterozygosity = 0.319) and a moderate genetic differentiation among populations ( F statistics = 0.0723). A correlation between genetic and geographical and ecological distances was detected among pairs of populations and the regional equilibrium analysis was thus applied. This analysis resulted in Nm (number of migrants) of approximately 3.21, indicating that moderate levels of both gene flow and genetic drift occur in this species, with gene flow overlapping genetic drift. However, considering ecological features of drosophilids, we propose a hypothesis to explain the moderate differentiation encountered as a result of three different processes, or a combination of them: (1) gene flow; (2) a short period of differentiation, i.e. maintenance of ancestral polymorphism; and (3) action of natural selection. Moreover, if gene flow is present, the high genetic diversity compared with other cactophilic and non-cactophilic species could be due to differential selection in different populations followed by gene exchange among them. These factors are discussed in the light of D. antonietae 's historical and evolutionary association with the host cactus.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers and measurements were recorded in 47 individuals of ten taxa of Primula , representing eight species and two subspecies from ten populations. The basic numbers of chromosomes were x  = 8, 9 or 11, and they were mostly metacentric, medium-long to medium-small, ranging in length from c . 3.6 µm to 1.6 µm. Diploid chromosome numbers of 2 n  = 2 x  = 24 and 22 were scored for the first time in P. loeseneri Kitag. and P. prenantha Balf. & Sm., respectively. A new ploidy level of 2 n  = 4 x  = 44 was found in P. burmanica Balf. & King. The recorded diploid numbers of the remaining species confirmed earlier reports. Interspecific variability in chromosome numbers was correlated with heterogeneity in their mean length. Comparison of the data with those in the literature revealed that the observed variability of chromosomal characters was compatible with the other taxonomic criteria and supports the current taxonomic delimitation. Chromosomal variation at the diploid level is the predominant feature in Primula evolution, and allopatric speciation has played a major role in its specific diversity. Subgen. Aleuritia could represent the main clade from which the other subgenera have evolved. The origin of the chromosome numbers, geographical distribution and evolution of the species were assessed, and the parallel polyphyletic mode of evolution in the genus was confirmed.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 150 , 211–219.  相似文献

1 Relationships between microhabitat variables (altitude, inclination, topographic position, drainage, canopy height) and the distribution and abundance of palms and palm-like plants in 50 ha of old-growth terra firme rain forest in the Yasuní National Park, lowland Amazonian Ecuador, were examined using 118 20 × 20 m plots laid out in a stratified random design.
2 If microhabitat niche differentiation is important for maintaining the species richness of the community, then (i) the distribution of the palms will be strongly influenced by microhabitat heterogeneity and (ii) palms of similar growth form will show antagonistic microhabitat relationships.
3 Mantel and cluster analyses showed that palm species distributions were strongly structured by topography. The main difference in species composition was between plots in the bottomland and plots on the upper slopes and hill tops.
4 Logistic and logit analyses showed that 20 of the 31 palm and palm-like taxa analysed had distributions that were significantly related to the microhabitat variables measured, mainly to topography but also to drainage and canopy height.
5 Spatial autocorrelation in the overall community structure was not explained by the microhabitat variables. Analyses of distributions or abundances of single species showed neighbourhood effects for seven taxa.
6 Antagonistic patterns of microhabitat preferences were recognizable among some species pairs of small palms, medium-sized palms and palm-like plants, but not among canopy palms.
7 It is concluded that microhabitat specialization is an important factor in maintaining the diversity of this palm community, while mass effects might also be important.  相似文献

Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was used to characterize genetic diversity of the endangered Burnt Orchid, Neotinea (formerly Orchis ) ustulata . Fingerprinting of Estonian and British populations revealed surprisingly little genetic differentiation between populations but larger amounts of diversity within populations, especially in Britain. The resulting mean F st value of 0.51 is unusually high for an orchid species. Much of the variation follows a west–east cline across Europe, whereas the much-discussed early- and late-flowering taxa of N. ustulata are considered insufficiently distinct to be viewed as separate subspecies. The later flowering N. ustulata var. aestivalis probably evolved independently on two or three occasions, each time diverging from the earlier flowering nominate race. The identity of the genes underpinning phenology in the species, and the potential selective advantages of phenological divergence, merit further study. Overall genetic diversity within populations is sufficiently high to render impoverishment an unlikely cause of their recent, precipitous decline.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 87 , 13–25.  相似文献

Functional benefits of predator species diversity depend on prey identity   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Abstract.  1. Determining the functional significance of species diversity in natural enemy assemblages is a key step towards prediction of the likely impact of biodiversity loss on natural pest control processes. While the biological control literature contains examples in which increased natural enemy diversity hinders pest control, other studies have highlighted mechanisms where pest suppression is promoted by increased enemy diversity.
2. This study aimed to test whether increased predator species diversity results in higher rates of predation on two key, but contrasting, insect pest species commonly found in the rice ecosystems of south-east Asia.
3. Glasshouse experiments were undertaken in which four life stages of a planthopper ( Nilaparvata lugens ) and a moth ( Marasmia patnalis ) were caged with single or three-species combinations of generalist predators.
4. Generally, predation rates of the three-species assemblages exceeded expectation when attacking M. patnalis , but not when attacking N. lugens. In addition, a positive effect of increased predator species richness on overall predation rate was found with M. patnalis but not with N. lugens .
5. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions that morphological and behavioural differentiation among prey life stages promotes functional complementarity among predator species. This indicates that emergent species diversity effects in natural enemy assemblages are context dependent; they depend not only on the characteristics of the predators species, but on the identity of the species on which they prey.  相似文献
