Male rhytidectomy incisions

Because the preauricular segment of a face lift incision is less noticeable when located behind the tragus, it is our preferred method in females. The desirability of preserving the normal hairless strip between the ear and sideburn precluded using the technique in males. In this report we describe a method of utilizing the retrotragal location in males. This has been accomplished by direct excision of the hair follicles and hair shafts.     

Mammaplasty with curved incisions.

We present a modification of Pitanguy's technique of mammaplasty. Curved incisions are used and the breast tissue is resected on a horizontal plane. We have done this operation in 130 consecutive mammaplasties and have had no complications. The esthetic results have been good.     

Dual curved incisions for trans-metacarpophalangeal surgery

Two transverse curved incisions have been used for surgical procedures on all 4-finger MP joints. The edema and hematoma beneath the incision are reduced, and the skin healing is excellent. The exposure is more than sufficient for all the commonly employed surgical procedures on these 4 joints. The final appearance is as good as with a single transverse curved incision.     

Secondary closures of penile skin incisions.

We present a helpful technique for secondarily closing dehisced suture wounds of the penile skin.     

Late results after reduction mammaplasty with curved incisions

The results in 50 patients who had had mammaplasties done 3 years ago are described--both as regards the patients' opinions and the surgeon's assessments. The alterations that occur in breasts after reduction mammaplasty were studied, and also changes that may occur when the patient's weight increases or decreases.     

Abdominal incisions for operations on the colon and rectum

The magnitude of extirpative operations of the colon and rectum, advanced by improved supportive measures, may be increased by decreasing the extent of transverse abdominal incisions. The right colon can be removed with facility through a transverse incision across the left upper abdomen.A left upper transverse incision, plus either an oblique or a Cherney incision, is preferable to a long vertical incision.     

Poland's syndrome: correction of thoracic anomaly through minimal incisions

A method that minimizes residual scarring following Poland's syndrome correction by latissimus dorsi muscle transposition and placement of a submuscular breast implant is described. In order to reduce any resulting unsightly scarring and, in particular, eliminate the anterior thoracic scar, both a dorsal S-shape and an axillary incision were made and the muscle flap was raised. A prosthesis was then inserted and the muscle flap sutured to the anterior chest wall through an anterior incision symmetrical to the inferior border of the contralateral areola. The latter is a previously undescribed approach that produces good cosmetic results.     

Mechanism and regulation of incisions during DNA interstrand cross-link repair

A critical step in DNA interstrand cross-link repair is the programmed collapse of replication forks that have stalled at an ICL. This event is regulated by the Fanconi anemia pathway, which suppresses bone marrow failure and cancer. In this perspective, we focus on the structure of forks that have stalled at ICLs, how these structures might be incised by endonucleases, and how incision is regulated by the Fanconi anemia pathway.     

Secondary rhinoplasty using flying-bird and vestibular tornado incisions for unilateral cleft lip patients

To correct the nasal deformity in cleft lip patients, a new procedure of open rhinoplasty using a "flying-bird" incision in the nostril tip with a vestibule "tornado"-shaped incision in the cleft side is presented. The newly designed vestibular incision produces effective vestibular advancement with the freed lower lateral cartilage. The flying-bird incision makes it possible to produce a suitable nostril tip appearance with symmetrical external nostril vestibules. If the vestibular defect after flap advancement is wide, a full-thickness skin graft is used to give priority for making a good external nostril shape. This procedure is useful for most cleft lip noses, particularly in cases of moderate to severe deformity.     

The quantitative analysis of the vascularization following two basic auditory canal skin incisions

Three groups of nine patients each were analyzed. The first two groups consisted of those that underwent tympanoplastic due to chronic inflammation of middle ear. Two different standard auditory canal skin incisions were applied, i.e. tympanomeatal flap (TMF) or vascular strip (VS). The third control group consisted of non-operated patients. All the operated patients were subjected to a quantitative analysis of the auditory canal revascularization by means of the Weibel stereological test method, i.e. the B 100 double network system. The density of capillaries, arterioles, venulolymphatic spaces and a total volume density of all vascular elements of the auditory canal skin were measured. The obtained results of vascularization were compared with those of the target control group. It was found out that there were no significant differences in vascularization of auditory canal skin between TMF and VS patients from one side and the control group on the other side.     

Deinococcus radiodurans UV endonuclease beta DNA incisions do not generate photoreversible thymine residues

The ability of UV endonuclease beta of Deinococcus radiodurans to act as a pyrimidine dimer DNA glycosylase was investigated. Cell-free extracts of D. radiodurans exhibiting UV endonuclease beta activity failed to generate incisions in irradiated DNA that liberated free-thymine residues upon photoreversal with 254-nm light. This is in marked contrast to the pyrimidine dimer UV glycosylase of Micrococcus luteus that does liberate such residues. The result suggests that UV endonuclease beta incises DNA by true endonuclease action.
