Although anthropometric information on South American Indian populations has been collected for many years, remarkably little is known about age-related changes in their body size in adulthood. The lack of baseline information on the normal pattern of aging among Amerindian adults hinders investigations into the health consequences of the many economic, environmental and demographic changes that are currently occurring among South American Indian populations. This study presents data on the body size and shape of a convenience sample of 345 Patamona and 186 Wapishana Amerindian adults over 20 years of age living in the remote interior of Guyana. Analysis of the cross-sectional data demonstrated significant declines in stature, sitting height, and biacromial width with age, while there were no changes in subischial leg length or arm length across the age range of the study populations. In contrast, body weight and body mass index (BMI--a measure of body fatness) only declined in those over 50 years of age, after a period of increase. Significant differences in adult linear body dimensions were found between the two Amerindian populations that were proposed to be the result of known differences in childhood growth performance. However, the greater BMI of the Wapishana was shown to be associated with their significantly greater current wealth, thereby highlighting the presence of biological consequences of wealth inequalities even within these subsistence farming populations.  相似文献

With the development of increasingly sophisticated methods for the alteration of bony facial form consequent to age, it is imperative that the surgeon have a fundamental knowledge of the age-related changes the skeleton may undergo. To understand these changes better, a detailed anthropometric and histomorphic analysis of the craniofacial skeleton as a function of age was undertaken. The study consisted of a detailed craniometric analysis of 160 skulls selected randomly from a Caucasian population of skeletal remains totaling 1500 specimens. Additionally, a histologic analysis of the supraorbital ridge in a separate preserved cadaver population was performed. Although the results showed individual variation as expected, definite changes in craniofacial morphology were observed. These included (1) appreciable reduction of facial height, most marked in the maxilla and mandible, and strongly correlated with loss of teeth, (2) modest increase in facial width, (3) modest increase in facial depth, except in those regions associated with tooth loss, and (4) general coarsening of bony prominences. Histomorphic analysis demonstrated increasing porosity with age, more marked in the female population. Although these changes represent population trends, in any given patient, any or all of them may be present to varying degrees. Surgeons should be aware of these possibilities and consider selective alterations of the skeletal foundation, either separately or in concert with the overlying soft-tissue envelope, in order to optimize the results of surgery for the aging face.  相似文献

In order to discover whether statistically significant differences exist between measurements taken on the right and left sides of the body, 21 such anthropometric dimensions were compared. In eight cases significant differences were found. Six of these dealt with the forelimb, in which the dimension measured on the right side was greater. Since data on handedness is lacking, we do not know whether this is related to the handedness of the subjects.  相似文献

Feeding habits and the activity of digestive enzymes (total alkaline proteases, α‐amylase and lipase) from dace Leuciscus leuciscus, roach Rutilus rutilus, Prussian carp Carassius auratus gibelio, perch Perca fluviatilis and pikeperch Sander lucioperca fry were studied in the Malye Chany Lake–Kargat Estuary (western Siberia, Russia). The diet of fry from all studied species was mainly composed of chironomid larvae and zooplanktonic organisms (i.e. cladocera and copepoda), whereas carnivorous species such as P. fluviatilis and S. lucioperca also preyed on fry from other fishes while detritus and microalgae were also important in the diet of ommivorous species. When comparing diet similarity (Sørensen–Dice index, QS) among fry at different stages of development, both omnivorous and carnivorous species showed a high level of similarity (0·67 < QS < 0·89 and 0·73 < QS < 0·89, respectively). Diet similarity values were in agreement with the overall digestive activity profile analysed by cluster analysis. Diet similarity suggested potential trophic competition when zooplanktonic and benthic prey began to decline towards autumn. The analysis of pancreatic digestive enzymes revealed a correlation among their activities and fry feeding habits with α‐amylase:total proteases (A:P) values higher than 1 in omnivorous species and lower (A:P ≤ 1) in carnivorous species.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of the timing of first feeding (larvae in F0, F1, F2, F3 and S were first fed on day 3, 4, 5, 6 days after hatching (DAH) and unfed, respectively) on feeding, morphological changes, survival and growth in miiuy croaker larvae at 24°C. The fed larvae initiated feeding on 3 DAH and reached point of no return (PNR) on 6 DAH. Larvae in F0 and F1 groups survived apparently better than F2 group at the end of the experiment on 36 DAH. High larval mortality occurred from 3 to 7 DAH in all feeding groups, accounting for 40% (F0, F1 and F2 groups) to 90% (F3 and S groups) of the total mortality. Larvae in F0 and F1 groups grew better than F2 group throughout the experiment. Eye diameter, body height, head height and mouth gape of the first feeding larvae were more sensitive to starvation than other morphometrics and could be used as indicators for evaluating their nutritional status. Results indicated that delayed first feeding over 1 day after yolk exhaustion could lead to poor larval survival and growth. To avoid starvation and obtain good growth in culturing, larvae feeding should be initiated within 1 day after yolk exhaustion at 24°C.  相似文献

Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae established first feeding 3 days after hatching (DAH) at c . 17° C. Non-fed fish reached irreversible starvation at age 5 DAH. Non-fed fish showed similar feeding rate and feeding intensity as the fed fish when they were provided with prey before 5 DAH, after which the starved larvae did not feed even when prey became available. None of the six morphological measurements examined (total length, body height, eye height, head height, gut height and myotome height) showed significant differences between the non-fed and fed larvae until 5 DAH. Normal development continued only in the fed group, and the non-fed larvae showed reverse growth or body collapse after 5 DAH. Owing to the shrinkage and collapse at the top of head due to starvation, head height could be a sensitive indicator of starvation in Japanese flounder larvae. In the fed treatments, high mortality occurred from first feeding (3 DAH) to irreversible starvation (5 DAH), accounting for about two-thirds to three-quarters of the overall mortality (46–52%) throughout the experiments. This mortality was not prey density or larval density dependent. Mortality during the same period in the non-fed larvae accounted for about a third of the overall mortality (100%).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of growth on ventilation and breathing pattern during maximal exercise oxygen consumption (VO2max) and their relationships with anthropometric characteristics. Seventy six untrained schoolboys, aged 10.5-15.5 years, participated in this study. Anthropometric measurements made included body mass, height, armspan, lean body mass, and body surface area. During an incremental exercise test, maximal ventilation (VEmax), tidal volume (VTmax), breathing frequency (fmax), inspiratory and expiratory times (tImax and tEmax), total duration of respiratory cycle (tTOTmax), mean inspiratory flow (VT/tImax), and inspiration fraction (tI/tTOTmax) were measured at VO2max. A power function was calculated between anthropometric characteristics and ventilatory variables to determine the allometric constants. The results showed firstly, that VEmax, VTmax, tImax, tEmax, tTOTmax, and VT/tImax increased with age and anthropometric characteristics (P less than 0.001), fmax decreased (P less than 0.001), and tI/tTOTmax remained constant during growth; secondly that lean body mass explained the greatest percentage of variance of VEmax (62.1%), VTmax (76.8%), and VT/tImax (70.6%), while anthropometric characteristics explained a slight percentage of variance of fmax and timing; and thirdly that VEmax, VTmax, and VT/tImax normalized by lean body mass did not change significantly with age. We concluded that at VO2max there were marked changes in ventilation and breathing pattern with growth. The changes in VEmax, VTmax, and VT/tImax were strongly related to the changes in lean body mass.  相似文献

As extreme climate events become more frequent and intense, short-term temperature responses of ectothermic organisms can lead to decreased performance and survival. However, organisms may acclimate to these conditions through behavioural and physiological mechanisms as exposure time increases. We used a reciprocal temperature (16  °C and 24  °C) transplant experiment to determine how feeding rate and body size of an apex soil mite predator (Stratiolaelaps scimitus) (formerly Hypoaspis miles) consuming prey (Carpoglyphus lactis) (dried-fruit-mite) changed along a gradient of acclimation time (1, 3, and 7 days, with control). In the control treatments, mites reared at 24  °C fed more, but were smaller than mites reared at 16  °C. When transferred to new temperature conditions, predators that experienced cooling events had reduced feeding efficiencies driven by decreased feeding performance, despite an absence of metabolic costs, while under warming events, predators also had reduced feeding activity, but feeding increased with acclimation time. Yet predators lost more weight the longer they were exposed to warming, and continued to experience reduced feeding efficiencies (i.e., lack of weight gain after feeding); this result suggests increased metabolic costs at higher temperatures and provides a mechanism for community downsizing under warming. Overall, our results suggest that ectothermic predators can acclimate to warming events with increased exposure time, but both warming and cooling events decrease overall performance.  相似文献

Ponderal somatograms evaluate body size and shape by converting muscular (shoulders, chest, biceps, forearm, thigh, calf) and nonmuscular (abdomen, hips, knee, ankle, wrist) girths into ponderal equivalent (PE) values. Anthropometric measurements, including stature, body mass, girths, and percent body fat by densitometry were collected in 54 Division III football players in preseason camp (fall) and at the beginning (winter) and end (spring) of the team strength and conditioning program. PE values were calculated for each girth as PE, kg = (girth, cm / k)(2) x stature, dm, where k = k constant from Behnke's reference man. PE values were compared to body mass to indicate overdevelopment (PE > body mass) and underdevelopment (PE < body mass) at specific girth sites. From fall to winter, body mass (+1.6 kg), percent fat (+1.3%), fat mass (+1.6 kg), nonmuscular abdominal and hip girths (+2.1 cm, +1.5 cm), and PE values (+5.3 kg, +2.6 kg) increased significantly (p < 0.05). From winter to spring, percent fat (-1.5%), fat mass (-1.4 kg), nonmuscular abdominal girth (-1.0 cm), and PE value (-2.5 kg) decreased significantly (p < 0.05). Fat-free mass (+1.5 kg), muscular biceps girth (+0.4 cm), and PE value (+2.6 kg) increased significantly (p < 0.05) from winter to spring. Ponderal somatogram muscular components were generally overdeveloped, with the greatest overdevelopment at the biceps in fall (+14.7 kg), winter (+14.9 kg), and spring (+17.4 kg). Nonmuscular components generally were underdeveloped, except abdomen and hips that were overdeveloped. The abdomen remained the greatest nonmuscular overdevelopment in fall (+6.8 kg), winter (+10.5 kg), and spring (+7.9 kg). Ponderal somatograms provide a relatively simple, practical method to track specific changes in body size and shape over time.  相似文献

The effect of genetic drift on the genetic structure of seven Irish populations was investigated using anthropometric data collected during the 1890s on 259 adult males. These populations ranged in size from 769 to 3757, were relatively stable over time, and were located within 119 km of one another. Two populations are known to have experienced considerable English admixture. Data on ten anthropometric variables (three body measures and seven craniofacial measures) were adjusted for age and used to compute a relationship (R) matrix. The R matrix was converted into a distance measure and compared with a potential genetic drift distance measure, defined as (1/Ni + 1/Nj), where Ni and Nj are the effective population sizes of groups i and j (derivation of this formula is presented). Distances were rank-transformed, and the correlation between their pairwise elements was computed using matrix permutation methods to assess significance. Under the hypothesis that drift affects anthropometric variation, these correlations are expected to be positive. The correlation between anthropometric distance and potential genetic drift distance is 0.123, which is not significantly different from 0 (P = 0.368). When a multiple regression model is used to adjust for geographic distance and English admixture, the partial correlation (0.369) is significant (p = 0.021). As part of further analysis of the genetic structure of these populations, the same analyses were repeated using a distance matrix derived from surname frequencies. The correlation of surname distance and potential genetic drift distance is 0.164, which is not significant (p = 0.264). When the multiple regression model is applied, the correlation is 0.401, which is borderline significant (p = 0.055). These results show the influence of genetic drift, local migration, and admixture on Irish population structure.  相似文献

Decrease in the level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) has been observed in women who start dieting, but not in men. Patterns of HDLC change during intentional weight loss through 30-months of follow-up, and their association with changes in anthropometric measurements were examined in obese women (N = 112) and men (N = 100). Missing HDLC values at 6-, 12-, 18-, and 30-month follow-up (N = 16, 34, 55, and 50, respectively) due to dropout were imputed by multiple imputation. Mean ages and BMIs of subjects at baseline were 47.2 years and 34.8 kg/m(2) for women, and 50.4 years and 35.0 kg/m(2) for men. On average, participants lost weight steadily for 12 months, followed by slow regain. During the first 6 months, HDLC decreased significantly in women (-4.1 mg/dl, P = 0.0007), but not in men. Significant HDLC increases were observed in both men and women from 6- to 12-month follow-up. HDLC changes in women were positively associated with changes in hip circumference from baseline to 12-month independent of changes in triglycerides (TG), glucose, and insulin. Rapid decrease of predominantly subcutaneous fat in the femoral and gluteal area might be associated with HDLC decrease in women during initial weight loss.  相似文献

Microdamage induced by falls or other abnormal loads that cause shear stress in trabecular bone could impair the mechanical properties of the proximal femur or spine. Existing microdamage may also increase the initiation and propagation of further microdamage during subsequent normal, on-axis, loading conditions, resulting in atraumatic or "spontaneous" fractures. Microdamage formation due to shear and compressive strains was studied in 14 on-axis cylindrical bovine tibial trabecular bone specimens. Microdamage was induced by a torsional overload followed by an on-axis compressive overload and quantified microscopically. Fluorescent agents were used to label microdamage and differentiate damage due to the two loading modes. Both the microcrack density and diffuse damage area caused by the torsional overload increased with increasing shear strain from the center to the edge of the specimen. However, the mean microcrack length was uniform across the specimen, suggesting that microcrack length is limited by microstructural features. The mean density of microcracks caused by compressive overloading was slightly higher near the center of the specimen, and the diffuse damage area was uniform across the specimen. Over 20% of the microcracks formed in the initial torsional overloading propagated during compression. Moreover the propagating microcracks were, on average, longer than microcracks formed by a single overload. As such, changes in loading mode can cause propagation of microcracks beyond the microstructural barriers that normally limit the length. Damage induced by in vivo off-axis loads such as falls may similarly propagate during subsequent normal loading, which could affect both remodeling activity and fracture susceptibility.  相似文献

In this paper we have tried to identify the significance and character of the linear and non-linear relations between simple anthropometric predictors: body height (BH), body weight (BW), and body mass index, and swimming performance: freestyle swimming 50 (FS50) and 400 meters (FS400), in a sample of young (15 years old on average) male (N = 40) and female (N = 28) swimmers. Linear (general model: y = a+bx) and nonlinear regression (general model: y = a+bx+cx2) were calculated simultaneously. Morphological variables are a significantly better predictor of the FS50 in males (BH mostly), and FS400 in females (BW mostly). This study emphasized some of the main advantages in the nonlinear regression calculation (including an interpretation of the relationships at a more superior level), and consequently allowed a precise anthropometric modeling in swimming using simple and easily measurable variables. For example, the best results in FS400 can be expected for the subjects that are average in BW (which guarantees solid muscle mass--the generator of force), but above average in BH (because of the physical law of lever). In conclusion, nonlinear regressions allow one to define the real nature of the relationships between variables, but only if compared with the linear ones. Additionally, this study emphasized one of the most important factors in defining possible specification-equation (e.g. structure of the influence of the different dimensions on the sport achievement) in different sports. In short, it underlines the importance of sampling the appropriate sample of the subject--highly skilled athletes exclusively.  相似文献

Anthropometric identification of dysmorphology in craniofacial anomalies, including the craniosynostoses, provides invaluable assistance in clinical diagnosis as well as offering a technique for interpreting possible deformities in skeletal remains. Premature closure of the metopic suture is a rare form of craniosynostosis, representing about 4% of clinically diagnosed synostoses. Accompanying this closure are defects of the head and face, particularly the upper face and orbits. To identify quantitatively the craniofacial dysmorphology associated with metopic synostosis, 50 patients with a diagnosis of primary (nonsyndromal) metopic synostosis were examined using a battery of 24 anthropometric measurements from which 11 proportion indices were calculated. The data were compared to sex- and age-matched normal standards and converted to standard (Z) scores before being analyzed using Student's t-test. The data indicate a complex pattern of dysmorphology arising from the synostosis which affects the upper face and orbits as well as the cranial vault. The entire fronto-orbito-zygomatic complex is narrowed, and vertex is reduced. There is compensatory sagittal and transverse growth of the posterior neurocranium and compensatory vertical and sagittal growth of the upper face. There are statistically significant differences in the pattern of dysmorphology between patients presenting prior to 6 months of age and those older but no significant differences between sexes. 笼养鸟类取食高度对其自然行为表达和动物福利至关重要。然而,相关研究却少见报道。本文以我国二级重点保护野生动物——蓝马鸡(Crossoptilon auritum)为研究对象,观察笼养状态下其对不同高度取食槽内放置的种子或蔬菜的取食次序,并使用回归分析建立取食高度与偏好值的数学模型。结果发现,笼养蓝马鸡取食种子类食物(玉米粒)最佳取食高度为0cm,并且采食偏好随采食槽高度升高而下降(y=-0.564x+43.146,R2=0.946,y为采食偏好值,x为采食槽高度);油麦菜(Lactuca sativa)的最适取食高度范围为15~25 cm,随着取食槽高度的升高,偏好值先上升,至25 cm处后下降(y=-0.014x2+0.543x+26.487,R2=0.952,y为采食偏好值,x为采食槽高度)。当取食槽高度在65 cm及以上时,蓝马鸡拒食率上升(拒食率≥38.9%)。成年蓝马鸡体高对取食高度影响不明显。研究结果可为笼养蓝马鸡饲养管理提供参考。  相似文献

The exotic wood-boring pest, emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), has been threatening North American ash (Fraxinus spp.) resources, this being recognized since its first detection in Michigan, USA and Ontario, Canada in 2002. Ash trees are killed by larval feeding in the cambial region, which results in disruption of photosynthate and nutrient translocation. In this study, changes in volatile and non-volatile foliar phytochemicals of potted 2-yr-old black ash, Fraxinus nigra Marshall, seedlings were observed in response to EAB larval feeding in the main stem. EAB larval feeding affected levels of six compounds [hexanal, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, (E)-β-ocimene, methyl salicylate, and (Z,E)-α-farnesene] with patterns of interaction depending upon compounds of interest and time of observation. Increased methyl salicylate emission suggests similarity in responses induced by EAB larval feeding and other phloem-feeding herbivores. Overall, EAB larval feeding suppressed (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate emission, elevated (E)-β-ocimene emission in the first 30 days, but emissions leveled off thereafter, and generally increased the emission of (Z,E)-α-farnesene. Levels of carbohydrates and phenolics increased overall, while levels of proteins and most amino acids decreased in response to larval feeding. Twenty-three amino acids were consistently detected in the foliage of black ash. The three most abundant amino acids were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glutamine, while the four least abundant were α-aminobutyric acid, β-aminoisobutyric acid, methionine, and sarcosine. Most (16) foliar free amino acids and 6 of the 9 detected essential amino acids decreased with EAB larval feeding. The ecological consequences of these dynamic phytochemical changes on herbivores harbored by ash trees and potential natural enemies of these herbivores are discussed.  相似文献
