  • 1 The present study evaluated the population dynamics of the heteroecious soybean aphid Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae) during an 8‐year period in Indiana, shortly after its detection in North America. Sampling conducted at multiple locations revealed that A. glycines exhibited a 2‐year oscillation cycle that repeated itself four times between 2001 and 2008: years of low aphid abundance were consistently followed by years of high aphid abundance.
  • 2 Similar patterns of abundance of A. glycines and coccinellids (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in soybean fields, both within and between‐years, suggest that late season predation by coccinellids plays a role in the oscillatory cycle of aphids. Insidious flower bugs Orius insidiosus (Say) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) were numerically more abundant than coccinellids, although the lack of synchrony between aphids and predatory bugs suggests that O. insidiosus has a limited influence on between‐year variations in aphid density.
  • 3 The inverse relationship between aphid densities before and after the start of the autumn migratory period changes direction in alternate years. High aphid density on soybean in the summer is associated with a reduced number of alate migrants produced in the autumn. Conversely, years with low density aphids on soybean in the summer are characterized by high numbers of alates that migrate to the primary host in the autumn.
  • 4 From a pest management perspective, the 2‐year oscillation cycle of A. glycines is a desirable attribute with respect to population dynamics because it implies that aphids cause significant economic damage only in alternate years (as opposed to every year). Cultural practices enhancing the conservation biological control of Coccinellidae may help to preserve the periodicity of aphid infestation and restrict the pest status of A. glycines.

Objective: Sedentariness is associated with weight gain and obesity. A treadmill desk is the combination of a standing desk and a treadmill that allow employees to work while walking at low speed. Design and Methods: The hypothesis was that a 1‐year intervention with treadmill desks is associated with an increase in employee daily physical activity (summation of all activity per minute) and a decrease in daily sedentary time (zero activity). Employees (n = 36; 25 women, 11 men) with sedentary jobs (87 ± 27 kg, BMI 29 ± 7 kg/m2, n = 10 Lean BMI < 25 kg/m2, n = 15 Overweight 25 < BMI < 30 kg/m2, n = 11 Obese BMI > 30 kg/m2) volunteered to have their traditional desk replaced with a treadmill desk to promote physical activity for 1 year. Results: Daily physical activity (using accelerometers), work performance, body composition, and blood variables were measured at Baseline and 6 and 12 months after the treadmill desk intervention. Subjects who used the treadmill desk increased daily physical activity from baseline 3,353 ± 1,802 activity units (AU)/day to, at 6 months, 4,460 ± 2,376 AU/day (P < 0.001), and at 12 months, 4,205 ± 2,238 AU/day (P < 0.001). Access to the treadmill desks was associated with significant decreases in daily sedentary time (zero activity) from at baseline 1,020 ± 75 min/day to, at 6 months, 929 ± 84 min/day (P < 0.001), and at 12 months, 978 ± 95 min/day (P < 0.001). For the whole group, weight loss averaged 1.4 ± 3.3 kg (P < 0.05). Weight loss for obese subjects was 2.3 ± 3.5 kg (P < 0.03). Access to the treadmill desks was associated with increased daily physical activity compared to traditional chair‐based desks; their deployment was not associated with altered performance. For the 36 participants, fat mass did not change significantly, however, those who lost weight (n = 22) lost 3.4 ± 5.4 kg (P < 0.001) of fat mass. Weight loss was greatest in people with obesity. Conclusions: Access to treadmill desks may improve the health of office workers without affecting work performance.  相似文献

Weight‐for‐length during the early postnatal period is a critical predictor of subsequent body composition and metabolic risk. This study was designed to analyze change in weight‐for‐length status according to birth weight in early infancy. Data were collected for 267 infants enrolled in the Jackson County Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Postnatal measurements were collected at a clinic visit between birth and 12 weeks of age (mean = 5.7 weeks). Changes inWHO z‐scores (weight, length, weight‐for‐length) between birth and the clinic visit were calculated. Infants were classified as exclusively breastfed or as formula‐fed. Ethnicity was coded as Hispanic or non‐Hispanic. Infants were classified based on birth weight z‐score as lower ( +1 SD). Multiple regression models tested birth weight, demographic factors, and feeding as predictors of z‐score change measures. Demographic factors and feeding were also tested as moderators of the effects of birth weight. Lower birth weight infants displayed an increase in weight‐for‐length z‐score between birth and the clinic visit. Change in weight‐for‐length was associated with significant increase in weight z‐score but not in length z‐score. Higher birth weight predicted decrease in weight and length z‐scores but did not predict change in weight‐for‐length. Hispanic ethnicity predicted decrease in length z‐score and increase in weight‐for‐length z‐score but did not moderate effects of birth weight. Increase in weight‐for‐length among lower birth weight infants and persistence of high weight‐for‐length among higher birth weight infants may reflect phenotypic adjustments that are maladaptive in adverse dietary environments. Vesicomyid clams of the subfamily Pliocardinae are among the dominant chemosymbiotic bivalves found in sulfide‐rich deep‐sea habitats. Plastic morphologies and present molecular data could not resolve taxonomic uncertainties. The complete mitochondrial (mt) genomes will provide more data for comparative studies on molecular phylogeny and systematics of this taxonomically uncertain group, and help to clarify generic classifications. In this study, we analyze the features and evolutionary dynamics of mt genomes from three Archivesica species (Archivesica sp., Ar. gigas and Ar. pacifica) pertaining to subfamily Pliocardinae. Sequence coverage is nearly complete for the three newly sequenced mt genomes, with only the control region and some tRNA genes missing. Gene content, base composition, and codon usage are highly conserved in these pliocardiin species. Comparative analysis revealed the vesicomyid have a relatively lower ratio of Ka/Ks, and all 13 protein‐coding genes (PGCs) are under strong purifying selection with a ratio of Ka/Ks far lower than one. Minimal changes in gene arrangement among vesicomyid species are due to the translocation trnaG in Isorropodon fossajaponicum. Additional tRNA genes were detected between trnaG and nad2 in Abyssogena mariana (trnaL3), Ab. phaseoliformis (trnaS3), and Phreagena okutanii (trnaM2), and display high similarity to other pliocardiin sequences at the same location. Single base insertion in multiple sites of this location could result in new tRNA genes, suggesting a possible tRNA arising from nongeneic sequence. Phylogenetic analysis based on 12 PCGs (excluding atp8) supports the monophyly of Pliocardiinae. These nearly complete mitogenomes provide relevant data for further comparative studies on molecular phylogeny and systematics of this taxonomically uncertain group of chemosymbiotic bivalves.  相似文献
