Mating system and parental behavior of ten monogamous pairs and two polygynous groups of the Tanganyikan cichlid Neolamprologus meeli were observed in their natural habitat. The home ranges of males and females overlapped with each other. Most groups included
one to six young. Paternal and maternal relationships were determined for 22 young from DNA microsatellite markers. Three
types of kinship were found: (I) kinship to both the male and female; (II) kinship to females only; and (III) non-kinship
to both sexes. In the groups with type II young, step-fathering or sneaking may have occurred. Type III young were larger
than type I, suggesting that the former were of sufficient size to leave their birth nest and settle in the territories of
foster parents. Both males and females drove out potential predators of young (including three species of Lepidiolamprologus) as a parental behavior. Adults with type III young attacked approaching predators with as much frequency as those with type I
young only, indicating that they provided alloparental care. Adults and young swam together, but, a significant difference
existed in the frequencies of interactions between adults versus kin young and adults versus non-kin young. The results suggest
that both adults and young recognized kin.

Colony infestation by the parasitic mite, Varroa destructor is one of the most serious problems for beekeeping worldwide. In order to reproduce varroa females, enter worker or drone
brood shortly before the cell is sealed. To test the hypothesis that, due to the preference of mites to invade drone brood
to reproduce, a high proportion of the mite reproduction should occur in drone cells, a comparative study of mite reproductive
rate in worker and drone brood of Africanized honey bees (AHB) was done for 370 mites. After determining the number, developmental
stage and sex of the offspring in worker cells, the foundress female mite was immediately transferred into an uninfested drone
cell. Mite fertility in single infested worker and drone brood cells was 76.5 and 79.3%, respectively. There was no difference
between the groups (X
2 = 0.78, P = 0.37). However, one of the most significant differences in mite reproduction was the higher percentage of mites producing
viable offspring (cells that contain one live adult male and at least one adult female mite) in drone cells (38.1%) compared
to worker cells (13.8%) (X
2 = 55.4, P < 0.01). Furthermore, a high level of immature offspring occurred in worker cells and not in drone cells (X
2 = 69, P < 0.01). Although no differences were found in the percentage of non-reproducing mites, more than 74% (n = 85) of the mites that did not reproduce in worker brood, produced offspring when they were transferred to drone brood. 相似文献

A technique for organotypic in vitro culture with serum-free medium was tested for its appropriateness to mimic normal odontogenesis in the cichlid fish Hemichromis bimaculatus and the zebrafish Danio rerio. Serial semithin sections were observed by light microscopy to collect data on tooth patterning and transmission electron microscopy was used to compare cellular and extracellular features of tooth germs developing in vitro with the situation in vivo. Head explants of H. bimaculatus from 120 h post-fertilization (hPF) to 8.5 days post-fertilization (dPF) and of zebrafish from 45 hPF to 79 hPF and adults kept in culture for 3, 4 or 7 days revealed that tooth germs developed in vitro from explants in which the buccal or pharyngeal epithelium was apparently undifferentiated and, when present at the time of explantation, they continued their development up to a stage of attachment. In addition, the medium allowed the morphogenesis and cytodifferentiation of the tooth germs similar to that observed in vivo and the establishment of a dental pattern (place and order of tooth appearance and of attachment) that mimicked that in vivo. Organotypic culture in serum-free conditions thus provides us with the means of studying epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during tooth development in teleost fish and of analysing the genetic control of either mandibular or pharyngeal tooth development and replacement in these polyphyodont species. Importantly, it allows heads from embryonically lethal (zebrafish) mutants or from early lethal knockdown experiments to develop beyond the point at which the embryos normally die. Such organotypic culture in serum-free conditions could therefore become a powerful tool in developmental studies and open new perspectives for craniofacial research. The in vitro infrastructure at the Ghent laboratory was financed through a grant of the Bijzonder Onderzoeksfonds of Ghent University (BOF: 01102995) and a Krediet aan navorsers (no. 31513695) of the Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk onderzoek (FWO-Vlaanderen). Like many other gobies, males of the Isaza goby, Gymnogobius isaza endemic to Lake Biwa, Japan, conduct parental care of eggs at nests, and females are likely to choose mates while visiting nests. The reproductive strategy should induce polygyny, but Isaza males never accept additional females in one breeding cycle. Sampling data of broods indicated that the egg mass areas were much smaller than the nest sizes, suggesting that nest size is not the limiting factor in obtaining further eggs from additional females. The brood size greatly decreased as the duration of care progressed. Few individuals including caring males ate eggs, and heterospecific egg predators were rarely observed. Sixty percent of egg masses at the middle stages of egg development were infected with aquatic fungi, some being covered with a fungus mat that drastically reduced survivorship. Infected egg masses contained more eggs than non-infected ones at the same stage, indicating that large egg masses are prone to be frequently destroyed by fungi. It is likely that the activity of parental males is lowered during the long care periods at low water temperature in early spring. Such lowered activity of caring males might be responsible for infections in large broods that would have needed more care. We propose the hypothesis that male rejection of additional females may be related to optimal brood size, which will be less susceptible to fungus infection and produce more hatching young than otherwise. This hypothesis will explain not only male avoidance of additional females but also some unique reproductive behaviors of this fish such as some females spawning of a portion of of the mature eggs in one nest. 相似文献

Food availability is often variable during the breeding season. Parents with nonmobile, altricial young have no choice but
to accept changes in local food availability, whereas in precocial animals, the parents may lead their young away from poor
sites to areas that have rich resources and/or are safe from predators. We investigated the latter hypotheses in the Kentish
plover Charadrius alexandrinus, a precocial shorebird that raises its young in two habitats: on lakeshore and in saltmarsh. Parents move with their broods
from saltmarsh to lakeshore, especially late in the breeding season, and we hypothesized that lakeshores provide more food
than the saltmarsh. Consistent with our hypotheses, plover chicks grew faster on the shore, and the difference in growth rates
between the two habitats was amplified later in the breeding season. In addition, brood survival was higher on lakeshore than
in saltmarsh and decreased with hatching date. Taken together, our results suggest that Kentish plover parents increase their
reproductive success by switching brood-rearing habitats strategically. 相似文献

Nest structure in ants is often designed to optimize the colony’s ability to thermoregulate, and this specialization is most
highly developed in mound-building ant species. Solenopsis invicta invest a large amount of energy in building mounds and transporting their brood up and down in their nests as a means of
thermoregulation. Because few ant species build true mounds, we wanted to determine the effectiveness of these mounds in harvesting
solar heat as well as to distinguish what factors (temperature vs. circadian rhythm) govern where fire ants place their brood
in the mound and when they place it. We measured temperature patterns in the mound over several days at different depths and
under different conditions (under direct sunlight or shade), and then conducted a series of field experiments to manipulate
the orientation and time of heating.
On cool mornings in spring or fall, surface temperatures of the mound rise at the fastest rate on the side receiving the most
direct sunlight (usually the south side). This heating causes a temperature gradient through different depths in the mound,
and shows little difference from outside ground temperature at a depth greater than ~40 cm inside the nest. In the morning,
fire ants move their brood up into the mound on the side most directly heated, and when temperatures exceed optimal (~32°C)
they move their brood down the temperature gradient to lower depths in the nest. In addition to this, mound temperature does
not only increase due to direct sunlight, but temperature also increases higher than ground temperatures when the mound is
in the shade due to its low specific heat.
Experiments in which sunlight was mirrored to the normally shaded side of the mound, or when mounds were heated at night,
revealed that S. invicta primarily track temperature patterns and do not rely on behavioral habits or circadian rhythms for the thermoregulatory transport
of their brood. When mounds were shaded, S. invicta brood was evenly distributed directly under the surface of the mound rather than aggregating towards a specific side. The
fire ant mound is important for thermoregulation because, compared to moundless subterranean nests, it absorbs heat more rapidly
both in direct sunlight and shady conditions. Temperature tracking within the nest is key to understanding thermoregulatory
placement of fire ant brood, as well as insight into the production of sexual brood and reproduction.

Synopsis Intraspecific brood-mixing of a Tanganyikan biparental cichlid fish Perissodus microlepis has been attributed to farming-out, a behaviour in which a parent transport some or all of their free-swimming young in the mouth and put them under the care of other guarding parents. We conducted observations under natural conditions to understand how often farming-out occurs and which sex is the primary performer. At most brooding sites, young in a school entirely disappeared before attaining to the size of independence. At many of these sites, farming-out and its precursory behaviours by males preceded disappearance of their young. Females never performed farming-out. We proposed that farming-out by males is an alternative tactics to brood desertion to evade paternal roles for remating. 相似文献

Background
Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) is responsible for stimulation of gonadotropic hormone (GtH) in the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPG). The regulatory mechanisms responsible for brain specificity make the promoter attractive for in silico analysis and reporter gene studies in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Results
We have characterized a zebrafish [Trp7, Leu8] or salmon (s) GnRH variant, gnrh 3. The gene includes a 1.6 Kb upstream regulatory region and displays the conserved structure of 4 exons and 3 introns, as seen in other species. An in silico defined enhancer at -976 in the zebrafish promoter, containing adjacent binding sites for Oct-1, CREB and Sp1, was predicted in 2 mammalian and 5 teleost GnRH promoters. Reporter gene studies confirmed the importance of this enhancer for cell specific expression in zebrafish. Interestingly the promoter of human GnRH-I, known as mammalian GnRH (mGnRH), was shown capable of driving cell specific reporter gene expression in transgenic zebrafish. Conclusions
The characterized zebrafish Gnrh3 decapeptide exhibits complete homology to the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) GnRH-III variant. In silico analysis of mammalian and teleost GnRH promoters revealed a conserved enhancer possessing binding sites for Oct-1, CREB and Sp1. Transgenic and transient reporter gene expression in zebrafish larvae, confirmed the importance of the in silico defined zebrafish enhancer at -976. The capability of the human GnRH-I promoter of directing cell specific reporter gene expression in zebrafish supports orthology between GnRH-I and GnRH-III.10.

Two repeated DNA sequences isolated from a partial genomic DNA library of Helianthus annuus, p HaS13 and p HaS211, were shown to represent portions of the int gene of a Ty3 /gypsy retroelement and of the RNase-Hgene of a Ty1 /copia retroelement, respectively. Southern blotting patterns obtained by hybridizing the two probes to BglII- or DraI-digested genomic DNA from different Helianthus species showed p HaS13 and p HaS211 were parts of dispersed repeats at least 8 and 7 kb in length, respectively, that were conserved in all species studied. Comparable hybridization patterns were obtained in all species with p HaS13. By contrast, the patterns obtained by hybridizing p HaS211 clearly differentiated annual species from perennials. The frequencies of p HaS13- and p HaS211-related sequences in different species were 4.3x10(4)-1.3x10(5) copies and 9.9x10(2)-8.1x10(3) copies per picogram of DNA, respectively. The frequency of p HaS13-related sequences varied widely within annual species, while no significant difference was observed among perennial species. Conversely, the frequency variation of p HaS211-related sequences was as large within annual species as within perennials. Sequences of both families were found to be dispersed along the length of all chromosomes in all species studied. However, Ty3 /gypsy-like sequences were localized preferentially at the centromeric regions, whereas Ty1/ copia-like sequences were less represented or absent around the centromeres and plentiful at the chromosome ends. These findings suggest that the two sequence families played a role in Helianthusgenome evolution and species divergence, evolved independently in the same genomic backgrounds and in annual or perennial species, and acquired different possible functions in the host genomes. 相似文献

We have investigated the floral ontogeny of Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis (of the eucalypt group, Myrtaceae) using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Several critical characters for establishing relationships between these genera and to the eucalypts have been determined. The absence of compound petaline primordia in Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis excludes these taxa from the eucalypt clade. Post-anthesis circumscissile abscission of the hypanthium above the ovary in Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia is evidence that these three taxa form a monophyletic group; undifferentiated perianth parts and elongated fusiform buds are characters that unite Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis as sister taxa. No floral characters clearly associate Arillastrum with either the eucalypt clade or the clade of Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia. We gratefully acknowledge Clyde Dunlop and Bob Harwood (Northern Territory Herbarium) for collecting specimens of Allosyncarpia, and Bruce Gray (Atherton) for collecting specimens of Stockwellia. The Australian National Herbarium (CANB) kindly lent herbarium specimens of Eucalyptopsis for examination. The maT clade of transposons is a group of transposable elements intermediate in sequence and predicted protein structure to mariner and Tc transposons, with a distribution thus far limited to a few invertebrate species. We present evidence, based on searches of publicly available databases, that the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae has several maT-like transposons, which we have designated as CbmaT elements, dispersed throughout its genome. We also describe two additional transposon sequences that probably share their evolutionary history with the CbmaT transposons. One resembles a fold back variant of a CbmaT element, with long (380-bp) inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) that show a high degree (71%) of identity to CbmaT1. The other, which shares only the 26-bp ITR sequences with one of the CbmaT variants, is present in eight nearly identical copies, but does not have a transposase gene and may therefore be cross mobilised by a CbmaT transposase. Using PCR-based mobility assays, we show that CbmaT1 transposons are capable of excising from the C. briggsae genome. CbmaT1 excised approximately 500 times less frequently than Tcb1 in the reference strain AF16, but both CbmaT1 and Tcb1 excised at extremely high frequencies in the HK105 strain. The HK105 strain also exhibited a high frequency of spontaneous induction of unc-22 mutants, suggesting that it may be a mutator strain of C. briggsae. 相似文献

Synopsis We studied territorial behaviour of the acanthurid surgeonfish Acanthurus sohal and pomacentrid damselfish Plectroglyphidodon leucozona on fringing reefs in Ras Mohammed National Park, Red Sea, Egypt. We investigated trespass times, the number of agonistic acts, their intensity and the agonism elicited (number agonistic acts/total trespass time) for all intruders. Five families (Pomacentridae, Chaetodontidae, Acanthuridae, Labridae and Scaridae) were dominant among the 14 we recorded in our study sites. Seven species belonging to four families were resident inside A. sohal territories. Of the other 66 species we observed, 45 are intruders. The territory-holder did not react equally agonistically toward all these intruders. A. sohal showed a high number of agonistic acts against conspecifics and the parrotfish Cetoscarus bicolor. The intensity of the agonistic encounters, however, showed a different picture, with a low level for conspecifics and C. bicolor, respectively. A. sohal showed a high degree of agonistic intensity toward only one parrotfish, Chlorurus sordidus. The highest values of Agonism elicited were recorded against Scarus ghobban, followed by Siganus rivulatus and Zebrasoma desjardinii . Despite these high values, the intensity was relatively weak. The territories of A. sohal were large (average 12.5m2); those of P.leucozona were ca. 20 times smaller (average 0.6m2). A. sohal spent most of their time swimming (patrolling) along the territory border, stopping briefly to feed on algae. On the other hand, P. leucozona spent most of their time swimming and sheltering. 相似文献

Hairy stripes in Tribolium are generated during blastoderm and germ band extension, but a direct role for Tc-h in trunk segmentation was not found. We have studied here several aspects of hairy function and expression in Tribolium, to further elucidate its role. First, we show that there is no functional redundancy with other hairy paralogues in Tribolium. Second, we cloned the hairy orthologue from Tribolium confusum and show that its expression mimics that of Tribolium castaneum, implying that stripe expression should be functional in some way. Third, we show that the dynamics of stripe formation in the growth zone is not compatible with an oscillatory mechanism comparable to the one driving the expression of hairy homologues in vertebrates. Fourth, we use parental RNAi experiments to study Tc-h function and we find that mandible and labium are particularly sensitive to loss of Tc-h, reminiscent of a pair-rule function in the head region. In addition, lack of Tc-h leads to cell death in the gnathal region at later embryonic stages, resulting in a detachment of the head. Cell death patterns are also altered in the midline. Finally, we have analysed the effect of Tc-h knockdown on two of the target genes of hairy in Drosophila, namely fushi tarazu and paired. We find that the trunk expression of Tc-h is required to regulate Tc-ftz, although Tc-ftz is itself also not required for trunk segmentation in Tribolium. Our results imply that there is considerable divergence in hairy function between Tribolium and Drosophila. 相似文献

A genetic transformation system has been developed for callus cells of Crataegus
aronia using Agrobacterium
tumefaciens. Callus culture was established from internodal stem segments incubated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with
5 mg l−1 Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and 0.5 mg l−1 6-benzyladenine (BA). In order to optimize the callus culture system with respect to callus growth and coloration, different
types and concentrations of plant growth regulators were tested. Results indicated that the best average fresh weight of red
colored callus was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 2 mg l−1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 1.5 mg l−1 kinetin (Kin) (callus maintenance medium). Callus cells were co-cultivated with Agrobacterium harboring the binary plasmid pCAMBIA1302 carrying the mgfp5 and hygromycin phosphotransferase (hptII) genes conferring green fluorescent protein (GFP) activity and hygromycin resistance, respectively. Putative transgenic calli
were obtained 4 weeks after incubation of the co-cultivated explants onto maintenance medium supplemented with 50 mg l−1 hygromycin. Molecular analysis confirmed the integration of the transgenes in transformed callus. To our knowledge, this
is the first time to report an Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system in Crataegus
aronia. 相似文献

Studying Pneumocystis has proven to be a challenge from the perspective of propagating a significant amount of the pathogen in a facile manner.
The study of several fungal pathogens has been aided by the use of invertebrate model hosts. Our efforts to infect the invertebrate
larvae Galleria
mellonella with Pneumocystis proved futile since P. murina neither caused disease nor was able to proliferate within G. mellonella. It did, however, show that the pathogen could be rapidly cleared from the host. 相似文献

Previously, we described the unique feature of telomeric regions in Iberian shrew Sorex granarius: its telomeres have two ranges of size, very small (3.8 kb of telomeric repeats on average) and very large discontinuous telomeres (213 kb) interrupted with 18S rDNA. In this study, we have demonstrated extraordinary replication pattern of S. granarius large telomeres that have not been shown before in other studied mammal. Using the ReD-FISH procedure, we observed prolonged, through S period, large telomere replication. Furthermore, revealed ReD-FISH asymmetric signals were probably caused by partial replication of telomeres within an hour of 5-bromodeoxyuridine treatment due to the large size and special organization. We also found that in contrast to the telomeric halo from primary fibroblasts of bovine, mink, and common shrew, telomere halo of S. granarius consists of multiple loops bundled together, some of which contain rDNA. Here, we suggested several replicons firing possibly stochastic in each large telomere. Finally, we performed the TIF assay to reveal DNA damage responses at the telomeres, and along with TIF in nuclei, we found large bodies of telomeric DNA and ?-H2AX in the cytoplasm and on the surface of fibroblasts. We discuss the possibility of additional origin activation together with recombination-dependent replication pathways, mainly homologous recombination including BIR for replication fork stagnation overcoming and further S. granarius large telomere replication. 相似文献
